Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you feasted with nomads and agreed on a tattoo.

It is currently the 13th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You don't actually intend on sleeping tonight but you suppose a smoke and a bit of tea wouldn't do you any harm. Plus, you wouldn't want to offend your host. “I'd be glad to join you, though only for a short while. I've breakthroughs to make and all that, you understand.”

They don't seem to have understood. In fact the vast majority of what you just said seems to have gone right over their heads. The father merely nods, offering you the mouthpiece while the mother starts pouring you a cup of tea. They seem to be drinking karkade, a type of herbal tea made from the dried flowers of the ambadi plant. From what you recall it's rather bitter and very tart, but mulled with a little honey quite delicious.

You take a seat on a plush velvet pillow and take hose from the father, sucking in a lungful of pleasantly scented blue smoke. You hold in the breath and pass the hose back to the father, only exhaling after the mother hands you the cup of tea. As you raise the clay cup to your lips, the father points first to himself and then to his wife. “Mani. Sonal. What are you called?”

The tea is a little sweeter than you'd like, they seem to have added sugar as well as honey and cinnamon. It's all just a little too much, even if it's not really unpleasant. You cradle the cup in your lap for now. “I'm Mikhael, of the tribe Abdul-Hakim. I really must thank you for your hospitality, I hope I'm not imposing.”

The father gestures as if clearing the air of a foul smell. “Bah! Imposing, you do not impose. Honor to house one of the Parbau. Not since the time of ancestors has one walked the sands.”

You're about to respond when their daughter poses a question. Her accent is not nearly so thick as her parent's, she actually seems to speak rather well. Come to think of it, she's the first person you've seen since coming here with a book. Books aren't exactly cheap, where'd she get it? “What sort of 'breakthroughs' do you need to make? Are you a Vatis? In my books only Grandmasters get to wear purple robes, are you a Grandmaster? What's El-Amin like? My parents-”

Her mother hushes her, babbling something rapidly in their own language. You catch the words 'pestering' and 'guest' but not much else. She appears properly chastened, hiding her face behind her book and seeming to shrink into her pillows. You do your best to calm the woman. “It's fine, I don't mind her questions.”

Mani says something to his wife, which distracts her from scolding their daughter. Sonal simply turns to you and smiles, raising her cup to her lips and seeming to forget the issue entirely. You turn your attention to the girl, running through her questions one by one. “I am a Grandmaster Vatis, though I've yet to earn my robes in El-Amin. Rather, these robes are from a city in the north where I've spent some time. I intend to meditate on how to create objects from raw vys, it's what's called an 'effect', which are often simply aspects of elemental magic separated and refined into self-contained spells.”

“As for El-Amin, well it's a very large city. You're seldom able to find a moment to yourself, so great is the press of people. The market in particular is always crowded, even after midnight you'll often find people rushing through the streets of the market district off to attend to one thing or another. It's a pleasant town, over all. Then again, my opinion is biased. I was born and raised there.”

You pass the next hour or so smoking, chatting, and drinking tea with the family. You have to keep your voices down, to avoid waking the sleeping children, and the language barrier is a bit of an issue when it comes to the parents, but you manage. About thirty minutes in you start to feel the opium taking affect, your limbs growing heavy even as your head becomes light and the world seems to slow to a crawl. Colors initially become very sharp, but by the time you excuse yourself to meditate everything is blurring together.

Mani, who even after an hour and several grams of opium doesn't seem particularly impaired, fetches a spare mat from a chest and lays it out on one end of their hut. You thank him before settling in, folding your legs beneath you and closing your eyes. You don't even really need to focus to slip into a trance, it happens all on its own the moment your eyes close.

So what's our opinion on raising a shrine here?

Does it matter if we present it to this tribe or can we raise it in the center of the desert?

Lost travellers or anyone on the verge of death can make their way to this oasis that's actually real and will have no choice but to allign themselves with Kitty.

I would rather test the enchantments with some sort of knowledge of what they are, otherwise we're pretty much putting the mask on over and over and over again.

I mean, there's self-reliant and then there's being fucking stupid.

At least with these tattoos, if they're going to screw us up we can always cut our arm off and regrow it.

Before anything else, you begin drawing upon your surroundings to refill your reserves. Not that you'd been particularly drained beforehand, it's just habitual at this point. It doesn't take more than an hour or so, and once you've finished you turn your attention fully to the effect you intend to master.
>Vys Pool: (56/56)

Instead of just letting drain from your reserves into your surroundings, you first filter the vys into Water magic and then gather it in front of you, pooling it into a single mass. Just as last time, you plan on creating a cup's worth of water. Water is a substance you're intimately familiar with, so ideally it ought to prove easy enough for you to make.

You start tearing away chunks of the mass and compressing it into thin sheets. This time you form each sheet before you layer them on top of one another. Much of the vys is lost during compression, so you end up with far fewer sheets than you had vys. Fortunately you'd planned for this. You begin layering each thin sheet, one on top of the other. It's a time consuming process, and you have to be careful not to rip or tear the shits. That was another mistake you made last time, the sheets of vys are fragile. You need to handle them gently.

Eventually you end up with a small cube of vys. Unlike last time it's not just an amorphous blob, but rather a shape with very defined edges and planes. It's also not fused together. Rather each individual sheet is still visible, if only faintly considering how thin the sheets' edges are.

For the last step of the meditation you channel vys into the block and the sheets fuse together. The next thing you know your eyes snap open to reveal a perfect cube of crystal clear water floating in the air before you. It's still shaped like a cube, but relaxing your focus it gradually loses its coherency. You will it to dissipate, and it vanishes into thin air.

The sun has only just begun to rise and most people still seem to be asleep. None of the family you're staying with are awake, Mani in particular snoring obnoxiously. You think the opium's mostly worn off, although you still feel a little buzzed.

The sounds of camels and the voices of men can be heard through the door, presumably the shepherds feeding their animals. You would think that the ink would be ready by now, though nobody's been sent to fetch you. Perhaps they're letting you sleep in, the expectation that you'll find them when you're ready? Then again, perhaps you're simply the first to awake.

It has been implied if not outright said that Anthus has different means for teaching things, and different things to teach Vatis; such as quantifying their reserves. You decide that you'll get some breakfast. You're curious to see what these tribals eat outside of festivals. You're careful not to make too much noise as you slip out of the hut and into the village proper. The 'streets', if you can really call the narrow spaces between huts a street, are abandoned as you make your way through the tiered rows of houses to the sands below.

Camels have been gathered in a pen off on the north west end of camp, while the lizards they ride are gathered in the west. A few herders have gathered around the camel pen with bags and are pouring their contents into long troughs which surround the edge of the fenced in area. The lizards, by contrast, have been thrown the corpse of a tarasa, a type of desert-dwelling canine with a striped hide and a long ridge of bristly hair running along its spine. They're large animals, which tend to scavenge whatever dies out in the desert.

A group of tribesmen have gathered around two older women, their skin wrinkled and bodies hunched, who seem to be preparing some sort of flat bread. Instead of a grill they've just buried hot coals in a pit of sand and cook the bread on that. You've never seen that method used before. You can tell that they're both Vatis, using magic to keep the coals hot. Not particularly good vatis at a glance, but certainly capable enough.

You make your way over to the gathering and a space is cleared for you to sit down. A man hands you a bowl of thick soup and a ball of boiled sorghum dough. You tear off a chunk of the ball and dip it in the soup. The texture is a little odd but it's not necessarily bad, and it's certainly filling. Someone else pours you a cup of camel's milk, which you take gratefully. It isn't long before loaves of flat bread start getting passed around. They're served in a bowl, with the bread pushed into the depression and a a thick sauce of some sort poured inside.

Overall the food is decidedly rustic but still rather tasty. There's no meat, and very few vegetables. Instead it consist almost entirely of grains and dairy. You suppose that isn't surprising, considering their status as nomadic pastorialist. They rely on their herds to sustain their lifestyle, and if they killed their animals for meat they'd soon find themselves running out of food. At the end of the meal a bowl is passed around with some sort of shredded plant matter inside, which everyone takes a pinch of and places underneath their tongue. You follow suit, and find it surprisingly minty. Even invigorating.

After breakfast the tribesmen sit around, conversing. You're busy trying to interpret what they're saying when someone taps you on the shoulder and points. Following his finger you see Dinesh standing a short distance away, his hands folded in his sleeves. You mumble a thanks to the man who pointed him out to you, though you doubt he understood, and then cross the camp to join him. Without a word he starts leading you towards a complex of four domed huts, all of them joined together. Unlike every other hut in the camp, this one has a chimney protruding from the top of the hut to the farthest left.

The two of you duck through the heavy curtains which obscure the entrance and find yourself submerged in darkness. A woman's voice calls out from one of the other rooms, and following the sound of her voice you find yourself emerging into a room lit by a fire. A deep red substance boils over a fire, various needles laid out on a clay plate next to a stool. Lilavati is washing off her hands with a wet rag, her face and hair covered in red dust.

The ancient crone points at you, and then the stool. “Sit! We do this now, screaming will wake the village. Good. Get them working. Sit, sit!”

None of your rolls passed.

Thus, you can spend 6 to make one roll a success, but you'd only have 8 left over.
You need 9 to turn the next closest roll into a success.

You're hesitant, but honestly you've come this far. Why would you back out now? You take a seat on the stool while Lilavati fetches the pot of boiling ink off the fire. She adds a little more water to the mixture, thinning it, and then stirs it all together for a short while before finally setting it down on the ground next to you and pulling up a stool for herself just in front of you.

Before she begins, she uses the same wet cloth she was washing her hands with to scrub down the skin of your hands and forearms, rolling back the sleeves of your robes for you. Then she retrieves a piece of white wax and starts sketching out the designs on your hands. She starts with the runes themselves, which she draws on the back of your palm. They central rune is 'life', its true meaning a mystery, and directly above that is the rune for 'Sustain'. They're linked by a straight line and both surrounded by a larger circle.

Then she slaps one of your forearms scoldingly. “Channel! I can't see the flow if you don't channel.” You do as she ask, and then sense strong Nature magic pouring off of her. She starts drawing lines seemingly at random, all of them connecting to the central runes on the backs of your palm. Soon this ends up being a much larger series of tattoos than you'd expected, as tightly packed lines start crawling their way up your forearms. They terminate at your elbow, but below that point your entire arm is practically white.

She retrieves one needle in particular which has a hollow chamber running through the center, and a bronze figurine that also seems to be hollow. Using a spoon she fills the bronze figurine with ink and carefully screws the needle onto the base of the hollowed out statue. She turns shakes the device, and then holds it point-down until a red drop begins to form at the base. You must say, it's very well made. You can barely see the hole in the needle.
(1/3)
>>
At first it's not so bad. She pokes the needle just deep enough to dig it under your skin and then moves on, poking you again. The ink burns terribly wherever it touches, but it isn't so bad. However, the more of the design she gets through the more painful it becomes, and the longer the ink sits in the holes she makes on your skin the more the ink seems to burn. It's like acid, you could swear it's eating away at your flesh. She's not even through the first half of the central rune before you're asking for something to bite down on.

You soon learn that the pain you felt was merely the beginning. As soon as she finishes the first rune, fire shoots through your veins. This is far worse than when Aisha started boiling your blood, or when you got whipped by in the temple. This is unimaginable pain. You want to peel your skin off just to make it stop. You scream. You scream your throat hoarse. At some point she must have paralyzed you, because try as you might you can't thrash your limbs about. You can't escape the pain.

At some point you must have passed out because when you wake, she's about to start working on your right arm after starting with your left. You can't even feel your left arm, it's just numb from your elbow down. You have to check just to make sure it's still there. They've wrapped your arm in clean white bandages, though the red has stained through. You're not sure if that's the ink or blood. You also smell something decidedly antiseptic in the air, though you're not sure what.

You would've thought that the second time around you'd be able to handle it a little better, but no. If anything it's worse than the first time. You're still paralyzed, so you can't scream, but the Gods know that if you could you would. You barely manage to make it through the rune on the back of your hand before once again passing out due to the pain.
(2/3)
>>
When you wake up you're lying on a mat in the darkness of Lilavati's hut. You're alone, though you can hear people talking in an adjacent room. Both of your arms burn terribly, and you're bandaged from the elbows down. You have to grit your teeth just to push yourself up onto your elbows without screaming. Apparently Lilavati heard you because she appears at the door a moment later, her face and hair no longer stained red.

She glares at you. “Tried to punch me, had to paralyze! Very bad, very very bad! Never had to paralyze before. Don't heal! Ink needs to set for a day. Then you can heal. Before that, risk fading the ink.”

Some dude who kills dragons and just became one of the most powerful people in your tribe builds a big ol' shrine for no apparent reason, offers up some incense, and then proceeds to teleport away.

People would probably start offering it gifts, after a while. Which is really all Mahana needs.

You rise to your feet, besides the burning you don't really feel all that different. You don't feel like your life is contained, or anything of that sort. You try casting a little magic, and have no problems doing so. Then again it was a simple spell, just shooting a little stream of fire from the tip of your finger. You'll likely need to experiment further to really understand what it is the runes do.

On the other hand, how do you figure out whether your 'life' is contained? You suppose killing yourself might work to figure out whether it keeps you alive when reason dictates you ought to be dead, but that seems like an awfully risky experiment. Perhaps you could try touching something that's alive? Grabbing on to a dying man?

Well, whatever. It doesn't matter for now. You need to get home. “Am I free to leave? While I've certainly enjoyed my time with your tribe I feel that I must return to El-Amin soon.”

Lilavati waves you off dismissively. “You are free to come and to go, do as you please.”

You step towards her, but she points instead to a curtained doorway on the opposite of the hut. You follow her direction and find yourself in the main room of her little complex. When you slip out into the village proper you find that you'd been in there far longer than you'd thought. It's already fairly late in the afternoon.

The Elder emerges from Lilavati's hut behind you, startling you when he slaps you companionably on the shoulder. “You will be leaving us then? That is understandable. You have your own people to worry about. Your own concerns. Know that you will always be welcome amongst our tribe, though I cannot always guarantee that we'll be easy to find. We plan to go east soon, and then journey along the edge of the mountains towards Apejo. We will be welcomed there.”

You acknowledge the man with a nod, glancing across the sands towards the pen of lizards, currently occupied sunning themselves. “I thank you for your hospitality, Elder. Truly you have been gracious host. As well, I apologize for lashing out during the ceremony. The pain was greater than I expected. Pass along as such to Lilavati.”

He simply nods, and you gesture towards the reptilian mounts. “How much would you like for one of your sarada? I've need of a mount for my journey to El-Amin and I feel they would be better suited than a camel for the trip.”

The Elder merely shrugs his shoulders. “You are free to take one, any that will accept you as its rider. They are fickle things, known to bite those they dislike. I would choose carefully, were I you. As well, I wish you safe travels Sankar.”

You raise an eyebrow curiously. “Sankar? Why call me that?”

The Elder gestures vaguely to the village as a whole. “That is what people have begun calling you. They do not know your proper name, so they have given you one of their own. Its meaning is difficult to translate exactly, but it would be something to the effect of 'luck bringer'. They say your arrival was a sign of good things to come.”

Huh, you suppose that's interesting. You certainly could've gotten something worse. Like 'loud screamer' or 'rude foreigner' or something to that effect.

You make your way over to the Sarada pen. Almost as soon as you get close, the lizards start to take notice of you. They start crowding around the gate or simply staring at you from a distance. It's a little weird, actually. When you finally reach the pen they start sticking their heads through the wooden bars, some of them bumping their noses into you or nuzzling your legs. One of the men tending them, his arms covered in bite scars and a thick turban wrapped around his head, chuckles. “Wish they treated me like that! Puppies! They are puppies!”

The largest of the sarada approaches the mass that have gathered around you. A hiss from the creature sends the rest scattering. You notice that its scales are thicker than the scales on the others and several of them are colored black rather than black or tan. You presume it's some sort of pack leader, or something. It's large enough that rather than sticking its head through the bars it can just lean over the fence.

It sniffs at your chest, curious. Then it bumps its head into you. When you reach a hand up to scratch under its chin it turns its head up to allow you to do so. The man who'd spoken earlier whistles long and low. “I never in all my time seen Vaisala act like that for anyone! She sooner kill than cuddle.”

Well, you suppose that's a good sign. “I think I'll take her, then. This Vaisala.”

The man simply shakes his head, clearly impressed. “Is your grave, Sankar. Is your grave.”

Unhooking the latch you swing open the gate and allow your new mount to walk out. She's surprisingly well behaved, not straying off as you close and lock the gate. The man has already fetched you a saddle, though he quite pointedly hands it to you rather than put it on the animal himself. It takes some trial and error, but eventually you get it safely secured and climb on. Oddly, you have no reins.

Fortunately here the man steps in to help you out. “You kick her to go, and use thighs to guide her. Kick back legs to stop her. They don't need training, know what to do.”

You do as he says, digging your heels into the animals flanks. She sets off at a swift jog, the limbs on either side of her moving in tandem. It isn't long before you kick your heels into her hind legs to get her to stop next to your make-shift sandship. You spend a few moments taking down your clothes from the mast and stuffing them back into your cloak before remounting and continuing on.

The sarada's feet are webbed, allowing it to more easily dig through and run across sand. That's what make it such a great mount. It will never slip, nor fall, nor misstep. It isn't long before you're proceeding at a good clip across the seemingly endless sea of dunes, pointed in the direction of the setting sun. Steering with your thighs is a little difficult, and a few hours in you're already starting to get sore, but you imagine over time you'll get used to it.

The sun sets, and you travel on. It's perhaps an hour past midnight by the time the walls of the city come into view. You note that the new outer walls have made tremendous progress since you were last in town. You'd say they've got a solid six miles of the eighteen miles they need to finish on one end, and on the other they've probably got around five miles done. Leaving seven miles to go until they're finished.

(2/4)
>>
The walls themselves are massive, at least fifty feet high. You count hundreds of towers along the length already constructed, thousands of crenellations, and a half dozen gates. The inner walls, which had fallen into disrepair, have already been remodeled. They're much shorter in length, only ten miles to the new wall's eighteen. Though they'd previously been crumbling, now they once again stand proud. At least twenty feet high, and higher in some places, with eight gates and hundreds more towers. They're a daunting sight to behold. You can only imagine the effect once the new outer walls are finished.

The sea wall is likewise under renovation, though progress is slow. It's well on its way to being taller than the tallest tower of the Temple to Pani, though it's yet to achieve such heights. They seem to have constructed a platform on the coast, encompassing almost the whole of the former Eastern Slums, and are now building the fortress proper. It will be visible for miles and miles once it's finished, you're sure.

As for the former slum dwellers, well they seem to have set up in the new district outside the walls. Housing is being built in some areas, but not yet enough to give everyone shelter. As such tens, if not hundreds of thousands have formed a shanty town in the area outside the walls, setting up tents or glorified mud huts to protect them from the sweltering heat.

From what you understand most of the people who used to live in the slums have since been employed as cheap labor to help build the walls, and the placement of the new slums help to confirm that. There is one massive camp on the west end, and another massive camp on the east.

(3/4)
>>
It doesn't take you long to reach the city. Since the outer walls aren't finished, you can just ride through them to the gates of the inner walls. The gates are wide open, though two guards sit on either end. They don't give you anything more than a few odd looks as you ride through the gate. You find yourself in the common district, which even at this hour is bustling. Carts roll across the streets and pedestrians crowd the side walk, most of them drunk or high. People seem to be heading home for the night, if you had to guess.

You briefly consider putting it off, going to your parent's estate to show off or some such, but ultimately decide against it. You need to face up to this, like a man. Thus you ride southwest, towards the Vatis district. You find yourself passing through largely residential and commercial areas. Then again the distinction between the two is slim. Most shop owners live above their shops, so in a way every commercial district is residential as well.

Soon you pass from the so called 'Common District', where the bulk of the city's population live, and into the wealthier parts of town. The Temple District as it's known. It surrounds the Vatis District, insulating it from the outside world, and flanks the Noble District on its east side. It's where most of the wealthier merchants live, and where many poorer nobles dwell as well. Your estate lies just beyond, on the southern border between the Temple and Vatis Districts.

Your ride is almost peaceful. This part of the city is practically abandoned at this hour. The only people that are out are either harmless drunks or up to no good, both easily avoided. Soon you're passing along the docks which run up to your estate, a salty breeze rolling off the sea and stirring your hair. Such a nice night. A shame you'll have to ruin it.

You stop your sarada at the gates, dismounting slowly and careful. Your legs are incredibly sore, as are your abdomen and your back. Even your chest and shoulders. Walking is immensely painful, but as the saying goes to be sore is to be alive. The two guards standing watch at the gates of your estate snap off crisp salutes as you approach, Vaisala following behind you obediently.

The guards swing the gate open for you without a word, and as you advance inside your mount starts eyeing your camels, most of whom are sleeping, hungrily. You snap your fingers to get your guards attention and briefly direct them to fetch some meat for your mount, then slip inside your estate as quietly as you can manage.

It's dark inside, the only light seeming to shine from the shrine you erected in Mahana's honor. Its light source is unclear, some nebulous area above a pillar. You can never quite see it, no matter what angle you look from. It's silent, eerily silent. Besides the steady trickling of water there's not a sound to be heard. You advance cautiously into your estate, and as you pass the ballroom a faint laugh filters through the open doorway. You think you can see candle light flickering against the wood.

You push open the door to the ballroom, slowly and carefully so as to prevent making any noise. Inside you see that the hall is dark, but light flickers across the walls. The source is the sitting room at the opposite end of the hall, where the hookah pipes and pillows are laid out. You approach cautiously, and start to make out two voices chatting amongst one another. They sound flirty, but that may just be your imagination.

As you get close you see two figures moving in the candle light, they're laying next to one another. Your cloak has shifted into a formless mass, muffling your footsteps and concealing your presence as you approach. Once you've reached the curtain separating you from the two strangers you gently grab hold and then throw it back in one motion. With a mighty leap you throw yourself into the room, shouting at the top of your lungs. “Surrender, villains! Return what you stole or I'll-!”

Prof clocks you in the head with a pillow, it was a damn good throw, while pulling a sheet up around himself and Tertia. Seems you've caught them in the afterglow. “Fucking gods, when did you get here?!”

You toss the pillow aside, shrugging your shoulders. “A few minutes ago. I left uh... two days ago? Yeah, that's it. Shortly after you informed me of my error. I would've been here yesterday but I got sidetracked-”

Profectus interrupts you with a heavy sigh, groping for his pants and struggling with them under the cover. “That's great, Mik, but how exactly did you make a week long trip from Anthus in two days? And could you turn around, give us some privacy here?”

You turn sharply on your heels before answering. “Technically, it's a three or four day trip by sea. That said I've negotiated a contract with the cat spirit who dwells in this estate to allow me to travel anywhere in his realm rapidly. This after I helped him conquer the realm of a rival spirit. That's a story for another time though. Is everyone alright? I trust nothing catastrophic has happened since I've been gone?”

You can't see him but you can hear him slide out from under the covers and the rustling of fabric. Presumably as he and Tertia clothe themselves. “No, nothing particularly catastrophic has happened. Chryss finally came out of her room yesterday. She's been quiet, more so than usual, but I think she'll be okay. Darzi's been spending a lot of time with her. Zahak is adjusting well to the smuggler's cove. Skull Kid, Mortia, Fulvia, and I spent most of yesterday searching the caves for it. Took hours, but we found it and got Zahak settled in. He's taken up fishing. Likes to fly out over the ocean and then swoop down to pluck up fish in his jaws.”

Huh, Zahak must have become a lot better at flying than when you last saw him. “In that case, I think I'll go see Zahak. Oh, by the way. Lovely to see you're doing alright Tertia. Happy to have you at the estate.”

She laughs a light, airy sort of laugh. “Happy to be here, Mik. I would've hoped to be clothed our first meeting outside the Temple, but oh well.”

You leave them to their business, striding confidently out of the sitting area and seeking out one of the telltale depressions in the wall that mark an entrance to the servant's tunnels. They're subtle, but you find one eventually and press against it, pleased to find that the hidden door slides open easily. You close it behind you, then conjure a flickering ball of flame to light your path.

Just navigating the narrow passages to the cave entrance takes a half hour. When you do find the cave entrance you quickly realize that you have no idea where to go from here. However, a little niggling urge in the back of your head says forward, and then down. You're inclined to trust it, but not wholly certain if that's wise.
