What are the best names for a tavern or shop, the kind of names that if you wrote them on a map, the PCs would want to check them out before all others?
>>
>>40832890
The Mended Drum (You can get beaten) Formally known as The Broken Drum (you can't beat it)
>>
>>40832890
The Gilded Pickerel

The Knotted Cock (it's a rooster you perv)

>>

I've always went for silly or misleading naves.

A tavern was call "Workers Union" my players where convince it was some kind of clandesting place for revolutionaries.

Other was the "Slippery Nipple" it was basically a milk shop, with cheese, yogurt and other milk base products.

"Pancake racks" it was basically a hooters but with pancakes.

"Chorizos y Choros" it was a seaport bar where it had gain the fame of a slut house over the years so the owner change the name, but still had the best sausages and clamps in the area.
>>
The key is alliteration and puns. Naming a tavern is like naming a race horse. Uncommon or foreign slang helps. My players love to stop at the Knackered Old Tosspot.
>>
>>40832890
I've always liked to use 'the wizards sleeve'

Verb/Adverb Animal is a common theme, as would be something local.
>>
I used to have a table with roll d20 for adjective and animal name, but lost it when my old computer broke.
>>
>>40833471
They have one of those in one of the 5e core rulebooks. DMG, I think.
>>
The Drunken Bucket
Its a worldwide franchise tavern, with the ever present special of the drunken bucket, where the remnants of drinks are thrown into a bucket over the course of the night.
>>
>>40832969
>The Waifu Wagon
Would be my first stop in town.
>>
>>40832890
The Faggot House, named for the twig and branch decor and naturalistic fireplace.

Of all the taverns I've made up in games over the years, the only name that's stuck with me is The Floggin' Flagon.
>>
Smiling Jack's Used Coffin Emporium.
>>
The 'Fuck it, we have beer. Give me your money' Inn.
>>
The Crushed Apple & Mummer's Milk are my go to inn names.
>>
>>40832890

When we were like 14, we used to have a tavern in every game called "Prancing Penis", and thought it was hilarious.

Ten years later, I go with stuff like "Cursed Queen", "Laughing Fool", "Smiling Lady" or "Wanderer's Rest."
>>
>>40834198
Sounds like a discworld inn
>>
>>40832890

"NO NIGGERS" Bar and Grill

>>40833900

>>
The go-to tavern name in our group is The Surly Carp.
>>
>>40833063
>Tosspot

A very common insult in these parts of the world, used as a synonym for "wanker".

I'm... pretty sure I'd go right past that inn and look for another.

I've always just used a chain of inns called the "Half-[animal]" Inn.

Half-Duck, Half-Horse, Half-Goat, and so on and so forth. Eventually, my group stopped really paying attention to the animal, and just started saying things like "Yeah, let's go back to the Half-whatever inn."

a tavern called the spit or swallow
the beer is horrific and only the stoutest of dwarves can normally swallow it... also women do not tend to go to this bar so no easy hook ups, party doesnt find out until after they are there
>>you can also make it a gay bar like scene for shits and giggles, depends entirely on the group your playing with
>>
The Strong and Stout - a reference to both the beer they serve and the lady dwarf that runs the place. Two of her daughters help in the kitchen or as tavernmaids, along with an elf that's twice as tall as the tallest of them.

who're you whore house
where your reputation decides the girl you get
commoners get cheap used up nasty whores and political leaders get awesome whores

used this in a communist setting town where all institutions are public and paid for with taxation... citizenry got free whore with high taxes, visitors paid with a low sales tax
>>
Lit in E's litany
book store owned by a guy named Mr. E
>>
>>40841552
That seems stupid, really. Who would ever go to a whorehouse if they would only get ugly whores, or pay for taxes that would go to such a place? Part of the appeal of prostitution is getting a pretty lady to stick your dick in.
>>
bear arms- weapon emporium
>>
>>40841634
>>based on a communist town, where things literally have free public use at a high cost to the citizenry while the more prolific members of the town get the best whore, food, land, etc
>> not realizing this was the base line for a potential quest to over throw the towns government
>> the name was just a clever play on words as well as a reference to the fact that a persons status and not wealth decides what you get in this town
>>
Bay Ink- bank of a very lucrative fishing town that specialized in making very expensive dyes and inks from the mollusks they fished
>>
the har har harpoon
a tavern with stand up comedy, with some mild whoring
>>
>>40841725
But then the common folk would never use the whorehouse, and would just outright refuse to pay taxes for it.
>>
pair a dice
casino tavern
>>
>>40841859
you have literally no idea how a communist society functions do you
the idea is to disuade the commoner from using the facility because they only get to use the broken down bullshit, encouraging them to say they are a visitor and paying for the service + the sales tax+ their citizenry tax or to go without using the facility all to the benefit of the guys on top
>>
The Medial Ring
A tavern initially built for a centaur ranger unit that was hired as town security until a proper town guard was established
It still specializes in making VERY strong drinks-enough for a centaur to get drunk.

I like the history behind "The Seamstress Union" in Shadowrun Returns.

The owner explains that "Seamstress Unions" were places run by former prostitutes that signaled that that prostitutes could have a legal place to work. (Prostitutes being listed as seamstresses to avoid the connotations of being whores)

The bar is a Shadowrunner bar owned by a Shadowrunner and filled with Shadowrunners.

"The Mid Rift," a strip club nestled within a tear in the fabric of reality

"TGI Everyday Forever," a tavern built where every moment in time all converge on each other

"The Natural One," a halfway house for adventurers who are down on their luck
>>
The Topless Lamia.

recurring names in my games:
The Drowned Fish, multipurpose tavern, which due to everyone involved being a goofy asshole, is actually pandimensional, and every instance where it shows up is the same storefront.

The House of the Golden Dawn
The House of the Jade Lotus
Competing tea houses in L5R. also geisha.
>>
The Broken Drum (you can't beat it)
>>
I'm running a star wars game in the core worlds so I have them meet at fast food restaurants, diners, and cantinas most of the time like Space Burger, Five Twi'leks, Corellian Grill, Blue Milk Hotel, Duro Bell, Han & Busters. The Roost. It's the local tavern of a village high in the mountains. Has a side business as the courier's office and, of course, the headquarters of the carrier pigeon trainer and his apprentice. A popular gathering place to hang out if you're interested in information of the publicly-available variety. Shadier business is conducted elsewhere: the proprietors have an interest in keeping a clean image.
