“Raiders! Hiding in the ravine!” Sree crows, and immediately everyone in the party is looking at her.

“Where?” You ask. And she points with a wing. Looks like you’re going to see some action after all.

Last time on RE: Human Quest; Reiln was raided by bandits from the Morrodak desert! It happened before dawn, and by the time you made it to the walls the raiders were already riding off into the distance.

With Albatross, your new horse and gift from the goddess Tymera, you and your friends joined a party of outriders to sweep the rest of the river for more bandits and opportunists (i.e. the group of people Sree just found).

Before Sree landed, you had just finished discussing tactics with the other three members of your party, and Seles had brought up the need for leadership. With a group of enemies so close at hand, you could put that conversations off, but you might best be served dealing with it now.

All that, however, is secondary to learning more about the group your harpy just spotted.

“How many?” Valen asks as he shifts his bow into a ready grip.

“Seven! With two others hiding with the horses farther west!” Sree replies. “Looked like they were waiting for night.”

Carter turns his horse around so he can face the rest of the group. “Good, that means we can get the drop on them.”

[1/2]
>>
>>40802860
Seles alone looks uneasy at the prospect of combat. “They outnumber us.” She says. “Perhaps we should go and get some reinforcements?”

You and Carter both shake your heads. He gestures for you to go first. “Everyone who can fight will already be taking care of various other tasks, and won’t be able to come with us for at least a few hours.”

“If they move, we’ll lose track of them, Harpy scout or not.” Carter adds.

Seles frowns, but acquiesces. Glancing in the direction Sree indicated with a small amount of Trepidation. Valen, on the other hand, seems to have grown… harsher. His eyes are narrowed as he thumbs the fletching of drawn arrow.

So far no one has laid out a course of action. What do you do?

>Get leadership out of the way in a discussion (support:….)
>Take command of the situation, you’re most qualified to lead, the others will follow
>Get everyone moving, and start coming up with a plan. Leadership discussions can come later.

Welcome to RE: Human quest!
In RE: Human quest, you play as Adria, the young adventurer who’s setting out to make her mark on the world.

Voting period is 10-15 minutes in length. Write ins are accepted but I reserve the right to veto any that I deem unfeasible. Dice are 1d100 and best of three, roll high with modifiers as I give them. I will ask for other dice as needed.

During Combat scenes I cut the voting period to about 7 minutes to keep the pace up. So far that hasn’t been a problem.

You've decided to take charge!

How do you want to move against the enemy?

You had two primary plans established last thread.
>Have Sree and Carter charge the enemy while the rest of you harass from a distance
>You Stree and Carter box the enemies in, while the rest provide support and attack from range
>New Plan!

Plans may be modified no that you have information of course, if you have any questions I will answer them.

Can we silently take out the two with the horses first so that they don't suddenly receive mounted reinforcements midway through the battle? If we end up being heard by the seven, we could dispatch the two before defaulting to the harassment plan.
>>
>>40803210
You could do this. Sree knows the locations of both groups.

>Take out the two guarding the horses first ?
>>
>>40803138
We could always lead them into an ambush of our own, one of us rides up in front of them, lures them to the outlet of the ravine, and then we pelt them with fucking everything and ambush them.
>>
>>40803225
This is also an option.
Though you do not know how even the ravine floor is, for horses.

You could enact this plan on foot.
>>
>>40803138
>You Sree and Carter box the enemies in, while the rest provide support and attack from range

could sree drop one of the alchemists bombs as we run in? assuming im remembering correctly.
>>
>>40803274
Carter said no to the harpy bomber plan and you chose not to argue. You could push the issue or suggest a plan that Carter uses the bombs first.
>>
>>40803225
Do we have any plan if they decide not to take the bait and just run?

For that matter, do we actually need to kill them, or would driving them off be considered a victory?

>>40803274
Nah, Carter nixed that on account of Sree would probably blow herself up.
>>
>>40803274
speaking of bombs, I remember one anon suggested Tamamo for alchemy, Grenadier/Demo Fox anyone?
>>
>>40803317
Your job as outriders is to sweep the area of threats. Driving away the group would be considered a success, but capturing or killing them all would be a more complete one.

You have no immediate fall back plan if they do not immediately take the bait.

====
>>40803138

In any case, looks like the plan is for the three of you to box them in while Tamamo, Valen, and Seles provide support. Clarification time!

With the enemy nearby, you don’t have the patience to have a long, drawn out discussion about who should lead the party. Right now, everyone is just waiting for directions (a symptom of being young, you’ve mostly out grown it by now), so you are just going to take command of the situation.

“Can you lead us to where the horses are kept without going through the main group?”

Sree nods. “Will go up and around. The ravine curves, and with the hills they will not see a thing!”

You grin. “That’s what we’re going to do then.” Seles glances at you, and for a moment it looks like she wants to say something, but you continue speaking before anyone can nay say you. “We’ll sneak up on the two guarding the horses and deal with them first.” You say. “Carter and I can box them in, if they don’t surrender immediately, finishing them off before they can alert their friends should be child’s play.”

“Assuming they are far enough away from the main camp.” Valen says. But he isn’t contradicting you, and Seles (while she looks like she just bit into a lemon) has decided to remain silent.

You glace at Sree. She nods. “More than far enough away yes? So let’s go let’s go!”

“Right. Lead the way!” Sree jumps off your shoulder and into the air. “Let’s move fast. She’ll take us far enough around that the sound of hoofbeats won’t be a problem.”

“And how could you know that?” Seles asks.

[1/2]
>>
>>40803814
You grin. “Cause she’s my falcon, now let’s move!” You spur Albatross after Sree, who’s flying low this time. Your grin grows wider as you hear three sets of hoof beats falling in behind you.

In about two kilometers Sree curves away from the river and leads you to the ravine. It’s too wide for the horses to cross, forcing the party to dismount and continue on foot. Soon, you’re drawing close enough to the camp that Sree has to land.

“That way!” She points “Two hills away. No one on guard!”

“Good.” You nod. “Get above them. The rest of us will move into positions.”

How do you approach their camp?

You briefly confer, or rather relay your plans, to the rest of the group before splitting up. At this point, Carter and Valen seem to have accepted you as the de facto leader (you being on top of things certainly hasn’t hurt their opinion), and Seles is professional enough to hold her tongue for the moment.

You and Carter will hopefully be able to pin the group in the valley between two hills. The two of you will charge in after Sree and Valen attack. With only two enemies, this probably won’t be very difficult.

The group climbing up the hill is so silent you can’t hear them even straining your ears. And well you aren’t as silent as your little fox friend, you’re good enough at sneaking that the two men don’t notice you as you get into position in one of the shallow flood ravines.

Now that you’re closer you can see the two men here are desert raiders without a doubt. The white head wraps and lean steppe horses are a dead giveaway. They aren’t even keeping watch, instead conversing quietly between the two of them as you wait for the others to get into position.

From around the other side of the hill you see Carter slowly moving up. Dear god the fool isn’t stealthy in the slightest! You hold your breath as he creeps awkwardly towards a halfway decent hiding spot.

But somehow, someway, neither of the raiders turns to look, and you let out a sigh of relief when he’s finally out of sight.

Glancing up, you can make out Sree, a tiny speck circling above. You know, however, that she can make you out with no difficulty.

Sometimes you’re jealous of your friends’ abilities, but most of the time you just can’t get over how amazing they are. Raising one arm slightly, you make a quick downwards slash, and Sree plummets out of the sky.

[1/2]

Humans it seems, even in a world with air born predators large enough to threaten them, still never look up.

Sree takes her target down in a blur of blue grew feathers as she bares him into the ground, her talons wrapped tightly around his neck and shoulders.

The other man cries out in shock, but he recovers quickly, throwing himself into a backwards roll.

Perhaps he was trying to avoid a second such harpy, or perhaps he’s just been in that many ambushes, but either way his sudden motion causes both Valen and Tamamo to miss their shots.

He staggers to his feet and starts sprinting towards the horses, which, coincidentally, are near your hiding spot.

Well now, can’t have him getting away now can you?

As he nears the horses, you dash out of cover, sword sliding out of its sheath with a sibilant hiss. The raiders eyes widen comically as you close on him, sword held low. Once more he dives to the side as you swing.

And once more you’re pretty damn happy with your two handed broadsword. Not only does it look badass (as your grandchildren would say) when you swing it around with one hand, but it also has waaaay more reach than your old one.

Suffice it to say, the far edge of your sword catches him in the chest and arm as he tries to evade, slicing through the leather armor and leaving him with a nasty wound. He hits the ground with a gasp and rolls gracelessly to a stop. Before he can even thing about moving again, you’re there, sword poised to finish the job.

His own blade remains undrawn at his side.

You see that Sree killed the first man by herself, leaving the one at your mercy as the only prisoner, as the others make their way over to you you have a choice to make.

This man might have information for you, but from what you heard of his conversation, he wasn’t speaking River tongue, doesn’t me he can’t of course, as it is the most common language of humans.

There are also seven more raiders to take care of, and the last thing you need is this one warning them in some way.

You keep the tip of your sword pressed to his throat as the others gather around you. Valen and Carter immediately move to quiet the horses, which were growing irate from the sudden bout of violence.

Nine steppe horses. And they’re all yours. Well, your groups anyway, but you’ll have more time to marvel over them later (Sree and Tamamo might not mind sharing a horse, and it never hurts to have two…)AFTER *ahem* you deal with the last raider.

“What do you all think we should do with him?” You ask.

“Finish him off.” Carter immediate chimes in. “There’s no reason to keep him alive, and all he can do is mess things up for us.”

Seles looks stricken. “How could you suggest such a thing!” She says. “He’s defenseless, to kill him as he is now would be base and cruel.” She sniffs. “At the very least, we should take him prisoner instead.”

“Then let him up and I’ll fight him myself.” Carter says.

“Prisoners take effort to guard.” Valen adds. “We will either have to take time to return him to the city, or else devote one of us to guarding him. And we will be outnumbered against the next group regardless.” He eyes the last raider. “While I do not advocate for murder, I do not think it wise to endanger ourselves for this man’s sake.”

Tamamo and Sree share a glance, though going by Tamamo’s glare, she probably wouldn’t mind overmuch if you were to kill him.

Seles glances at all of you before glaring and stomping away. “Do what you will, baseless heathens.”

“You’re a follower of Tymera right?” You ask.

Seles whirls on you, “Yes, I am! What of it.”

You crack a smirk. “Nothing important.” Sree rubs her head with a wing in confusion, but Tamamo at least seems to get the joke. She hids her mouth behind her sleeve as she giggles.

You pull the sword back a bit. “Hey, can you understand me?” You ask. Not the most elegant of questions but it will serve. The man just glares at you. “With a sigh, you lift up your sword and stab it down, burying the tip an inch away from his face. “I said.” You repeat. “Do you understand me?” You pause. “What are you doing here?”

“Beckilr che! Ahmerrrab tur illibd!”

“I guess that’s a no.” You pull your sword back up.

Seles comes back over. “Wait! He’s speaking…. Dakartan, I’m sure if it.” She says.

“Can you understand him?” She just shakes her head at your question. “No helping it then.” Pulling your sword back, you strike him hard across the head with the flat of it. There’s a resounding crack.

“Is he out?” You ask.

Seles leans down and checks his pulse, before calling on some sort of weak miracle. “Yes.” She says, glancing at you distastefully. “I had to stabilize him though, he won’t be waking up for a while at least.”

“We’ll tie him and leave him here, make sure the knots are good.”

Carter nods and kneels by down, pulling out a length of rope. “I’ll handle him. What’s our move against the main camp.”

“We’ll use the ravine against them.” You begin. “With the way it’s set up, we should have no difficulty-”

“And who, may I ask, elected you party leader?” Seles interrupts.

You sigh, you really had begun to hope she would hold off until you were done with this at least.

You let out an exasperated sigh, turning to face the young priestess. “As a matter of fact.” You say slowly. “All of you made me the defacto leader when you decided to follow my lead after we discovered the bandit camp.” You cock an eyebrow, “I didn’t see anyone complaining when I put together a coherent plan and led our party through it for an quick and easy victory, unless you feel like you could have done better?”

She glowers at you for a moment, and you bask in the feeling of impotent rage.

“Well?” You ask after a moment. “Would you like to take charge of the party? If so, I would love to hear your plan to deal with the bandit camp. I’m sure you’ll come up with something.” You make a show of tapping your foot, meeting Seles’s glare with a confident smirk.

You can see she’s trying to put together some sort of retort, but before things escalate any further, Carter lets out a conspicuous cough. “Let’s get a move on!” He says. “If you really want to have it wait until AFTER we finish off the other group for godssakes!”

Valen lets out a narrow smirk. “Indeed.”

Seles holds her stance for a moment more before huffing and looking away.

“Thank you.” You say, turning back to the rest of the group. “As I was saying. We’ll use the ravine against them. Fun historic fact, a trained domestic horse will do anything to avoid trampling a person, going as far as to injure themselves to avoid doing so.

I would assume these people have well trained horses seeing as thats there primary method of living as nomads.

“I suggest that we do more or less the same thing we did here. Carter and I will keep them from running, and the rest of you hit them from above. We’ll be counting on you keeping them too confused to organize so they can’t overwhelm either one of us with numbers.”

Valen and Tamamo nod. Seles does too, after a moment.

“I assume Sree will signal the first attack again?” Valen asks

You look to your friend. “Is the ravine wide enough for you?”

Sree tilts her head for a moment, thinking. She flutters up to your shoulders and nods. “Will not be able to land, but strafing will work.” She says confidently.

Seles sighs. “I’ll make sure to keep you all healthy.”

With that, you make sure the prisoner is properly trussed up and head out. There’s been an inordinate amount of sneaking going on this mission, though you suppose that’s what scouting means.

Once the ravine is in sight, your group slows down and spreads out. You keep track of Sree above, as she outlines the location of the raiders with slow, lazy, circles. You and Carter are at opposite sides, crawling towards the edge.

You can hear snippets of low conversation drifting from the ravine, the speakers still out of sight. When you’re a few meters away you hold up your hand for everyone to stop. Then three fingers.

Two.

One.

Charge!

When you hit the ground you’ll-

You and Carter jump at the same time that Sree drops from the sky onto her first victim.

Pooling the lightning in your hands, you let it out in a rending burst, knocking two of the raiders backwards before they can even recover. Sree’s already airborn again, adding more to the confusion as she gets out of range for another pass.

On the opposite side of the ravine, you see Carter, his mouth set in a focused and determined frown, separate a man’s head from his shoulders with a single sweep of his war axe.

Two arrows arc into the ravine, but one (Valen’s you notice) goes wide, while Tamamo still manages to hit her target in the confusion. You smirk, feeling proud of your kitsune friend as the magic fades from your hands.

It’s interesting, what you notice in the heat of combat.

But the coup degrace is when Seles holds up her staff and releases a bright flare of aquamarine light.

It washes over the ravine like a wave, and even though you feel like you should be blinded by it, it doesn’t affect you at all.

The raiders, on the other hand, are a different story. To them, it must have been like a solar flare directly in their eyes. Any reaction they could have mounted is delayed for the moment while they get their bearings back.

One is dead, two more are prone, and the rest are blinded. What do you do?

You pull your sword out of your sheath and imbue it, for a moment, you’re about to do the magical equivalent of pulling the cord and just letting it rip. As per the usual, but you know what? With all of the raiders just staggering around, this is too gods damned easy!

Time to exploit future knowledge of physics and electricity to turn your sword from a lethal weapon coated in a chained lightning bolt, to a lethal weapon packing just the right amount of charge to knock someone out!

Too bad it’s been eighty years or so since you took highschool physics! That means you’re just gonna wing it.

Lashing out with your sword, you stab the nearest foe. The tip of the blade passes through his silk armor like nothing. How’s that for alternating current! (or is it direct current? All told, this is the most you’ve used your past life knowledge in a while…).

He seizes up, muscles tensing and shaking in tight orbits until, with a flick of your wrist, you send him sprawling to the ground. He lays there in a twitching pile, just as you see Valen, who apparently has decided to redeem himself, put an arrow through the head of another raider. Tamamo makes a hit as well, with Carter bashing his next target of their feet.

It’s then that Seles’s miracle ends. Letting the remains three raiders finally get their bearings. Three others are dead, and your own target is knocked out cold. Taser blade, useful.

In all honesty, the three still standing aren’t in great shape either. There’s one of the two you blasted with lightning, the one carter knocked over, and the one who looks like Sree gave him another opening in his throat. He’s still breathing, albeit poorly.

Yeah when we could've just killed them instead and waste our time a "Coup De Grace" When they have allies who will interrupt us, It doesn't work like in the games. And hte point is he changed the whole thing because the one roller rolled high when votes haven't been like that in the past
>>
>>40809400
>finish off the rest
It isn't safe enough to attempt to capture all three and keep them, especially given communication issues.

The part that sucks about being a leader in our line of work is murdering others for pragmatism, even when we have the advantage. Seles will have to learn that eventually.
>>
>>40809519
It takes a pretty large amount of time to recover from a taser. Long enough to bleed out from some wounds. Recovering injured is also more expensive than leaving corpses behind(at least it is when you don't have magic), so it can be used as a tactical advantage.

To be fair, I wasn't expecting to roll high and was totally fine with just putting the idea up in the air. It really ISN'T fair to experiment stuff in the middle of combat and expect it to succeed.

I just wanted to see if there was a way to taser someone AND apply pepper spray using chilis and Alchemist.
>>
>>40809623
Yes but i'm more pissed off that because you rolled high Argent went "LOL since you roll high i guess we do things your way hahaha!" which is a complete shit move
>>
>>40809623
The recovery time of a taser depends on the point of impact, the individual in question, and how much they're actually responding to pain at the time. Theres a reason that TASERs are ineffective on methed out maniacs, because they aren't responding properly to sudden massive pain responses and can continue on past a threshold where your body should normally say "Fuck this I'm out!" and stop.

This issue really would only apply to beserkers and element/stone armored enemies or invertebrates who have a pain response more on par with an automated damage control system such as the kind you'd find on an oil rig or a lunar rover.
>>
>>40809656
I'm alright with it since it feels more like a reward for the unnatural crit. We could have done a little better at killing people with a non-taser requesting roll, but this might be more useful in the long term.

Either way, I'm willing to roll with it as essentially QM fiat on how the unnatural crit plays out.
>>
Yeah- although I'd rather it not happen more than once, I'm fine with letting it slide, especially since the stunt might be useful later.
>>
>>40809742
That's not the point though, He did it even if people didn't want it all because the person who suggested it got the highest roll, And that's not how it works
>>
The taser isn't the important part guys, the important part, is that the MC just learned how to control how much electricity she can produce, now we can do things we couldnt before
Least I'd be willing to bet thats how Argent will play it
>>
>>40809781
It can be. Quests are a mixture of gaming and storytelling in a freeform mixture of self-imposed rules on how things work. If we're willing to let him bend those rules for mutual benefit, we can totally let Argent do that. He could also do the same for us if he really wanted to.

I'm uncomfortable with it being a regular thing, since bending/breaking the rules too often essentially invalidates them, but I can give a pass now, with the expectation it won't be a regular thing. If it does become one, I'd take your side on it, no doubt.
>>
>>40809916
Yes but the point is it could NOT have been for benefit, That's the point i'm trying to make. I honestly hope he NEVER does this again
>>
>>40809826
Very much this.
Basically, I see where you guys are coming from, and I did go with the highest roll over the majority. However, I did that because
a) the proposed action was very close to the majority action, just a difference in magnitude
b) it wasn't going to hurt you to go taser mode instead of kill. Especially because you ganked these guys so hard (and your allies were rolling off the charts) so that this was basically a walk in the park.

If you don't appreciate me taking some... let's call it artistic license with the votes well... this is my quest. And I'm going to do what I think makes a good story. I'm never going to say something like "Nope, I'm doing this despite what you guys voted", but I reserve the right to use your votes and roles (along with commentary and discussion) to form an interesting and interactive story.

Basically, if you look back over the story, I have always gone with the majority vote. In fact, I did the same thing here. You still imbued your sword, you still kicked ass, as the roll indicated, but I included what I thought was an interesting write in along with the stated majority. Because it wouldn't change the outcome.

If that's creating too much tension, I'll try to scale it back, but I feel that good write ins should be rewarded, even though I feel like they're often overlooked in my quest.

Lastly, sorry for the delay, I was doing stuff, and I'm writing now. Will wrap this up in the next few posts.

There’s no reason to pull back at this point. There’s blood in the water now, and if you were the enemies, seeing four of your friends dead and dying on the ground, well, you would stop either.

But maybe that’s just you.

In any case, there is no pause in combat as the spell fades. More arrows are loosed weapons are drawn, and you and Carter charge the enemies once more.

Sree swoops down and finishes off one of the wounded one still standing. Valen downs another, and between you and Carter, the last, the one you blew off his feet with a bolt of lightning, is easy pickings as well.

As you whip off your blade and return it to its sheath, you look over the two remaining enemies still alive.

They’re all pretty badly wounded, even the one you tested out your taser blade on, but Carter is making sure he stays down. You’ve finished off the camp, now the only question is what you plan on doing next.

Seles hops down into the ravine and begins healing the two survivors, with Carter tying them up immediately afterwards. The rest of you make short work of their campsite, but they don’t have much but their weapons, which aren’t anything special, and a bit of food.

The leader (one of the ones who died) had a few gold coins in his belt pouch along with a letter in a language you can’t read.

“Seles, is this Dakartan too?” You ask her, showing her the letter.

She frowns. “I… think so?” when you motion for her to continue she adds. “It’s the Dakartan alphabet certainly, but... these two letters here?” she points. “They shouldn’t be next to each other. And this word is just gibberish, not a single vowel in the whole thing.”

Valen stands from where he was collecting his arrows. “Logic would indicate a type of code then, would it not?” He says. “Do you think you can break it?”

Seles shakes her head. “I’m only just now learning Dakartan, it’s my third language as part of my training as a wandering cleric.” She says. “I certainly don’t know enough about it to attempt to break a code. If this letter was written normally, I would have trouble reading it.” She admits somewhat sheepishly.

You shrug. “We’ll bring it back to the city then. For now, let’s put these two prisoners with the other one, we’ll tie them to one of the boulders or something.”

“Then we finish our sweep?” Carter asks. You nod.

[1/2]
>>
>>40810316
“Best be thorough.” You say. “These look like they could be the same group of raiders that hit Reiln this morning, or last night if you want to call it that…” You shrug. “In any case, if there’s one group waiting in the wings…”

“There will probably be more.” Valen says with a nod. “We’d best be careful then, we cannot count on luck to lead us through another encounter like this without difficulty.”

You smirk. “You call it luck.” You say. “I’d like to call it tactics.” He gives you a wry smile.

Then you all climb out of the ravine, prisoners in tow. The day isn’t over yet.

[end part 9]
