Welcome back to Blackguard Quest Ladies and Gentlemen! I finally managed to run again! Hooray! Sorry for the temporary hiatus I didn't get enough votes to feel comfortable writing the outcome for this decision last thread, so I'm reposting it.

Jasmine POV

You and Karin are in the main room of the inn that Avitus rented you rooms in, enjoying your first real meal in the last three days, the tavern room is mostly empty, the only other patrons besides you, are a group of large men at a table off to one side getting extremely drunk, and a taller man wearing plate armor in a corner, you can see a longsword at his hip. Your eyes drift over to Karin as you eat, she's just so adorable! You just want to grab her and go upstairs...Okay where did THAT thought?! you shake it out of your head, you do NOT need that kind of thing distracting you.

The tall man in the corner gets up, having finished his meal, and heads for the door, on the way, one of the drinking men gets up, stepping between the armored man and the door, his friends follow "Ere yew, wot's a rich lookin fella like you doin in a place like this? Yew think you're better than us don't you?" The armored man simply stares "Say somethin, are you lookin to start a fight?" okay, this looks like it could get ugly.

>Move to back up the armored man, he's outnumbered 5 to 1
>Just watch, no need to get involved
>Head up to your room with Karin, you don't want to be here if a fight starts.

I'd advise against skipping it, since SOL in a blackguard quest still involves some shit. Basically it just means that stuff is happening in the town. You may not want to actively participate, but I'd advise at least lurking. As to your question, I'll probably make at least two threads today.
Hell I may even make three depending on whether or not everyone can keep up with me

Well, you're definitely not getting involved in this. If things turn to ugly you might step in, but until then you're more than content to watch. You shoo Karin off to your room with some reluctance, so adorable... Ah, no. Watching the fight. The armored man is now surrounded by the drunks, and one reaches out to shove him. He catches the burly mans hand, and throws him bodily over his shoulder into one of the tables, turning around quickly to stop another mans fist, punching him in the gut. The fights on in earnest now, but the armored man is taking out the rest of the drunks with ease, Where did he learn to fight like that? He's outnumbered and surrounded but he's throwing them around like ragdolls, you catch something glint around his neck, an amulet, three golden rings. You recognize that symbol alright, you'd have to be stupid not to. A member of the lady's church, probably a paladin if he's in armor. This...this is not good.

Well, you're not sticking around here to find out if he recognizes you, THAT'S for damn sure. You begin to make your way over to the stairs that lead to the second floor, out of the corner of your eye you see one of the drunks stumbling backwards towards you, thrown by one of the paladins punches, if you hadn't noticed he likely would have fallen on top of you, you have a quick second to react

You quickly side-step out of the way and make for the stairs, the sound of the fight raging behind you. You make your way up the stairs and into your room, closing and locking the door behind you.

The fight sounds like it's dying down. Karin jumps up from the chair she was sitting on as you enter, but relaxes when she sees it's you,

"What's wrong? You look scared or something?" Karin asks, before apparently remembering you can't talk, her face going red as she awkwardly mutters an apology. So adorable.

You can hear the sounds of the fight below you stop, and you think you can make out muted hints of conversation from below.

Oh godsdamn! Avitus and Ergon are probably going to be back soon, you don't know how much this paladin knows about you yet!

>>
>>40801908
Alright, calm down. Those two can take care of themselves, they might not even come back for a while yet.

First things first, you don't KNOW that the man in armor down there was a paladin, for all you know he was just religious, you need to know, it might not confirm anything, but it'll definitely help.

You take a second to calm your breath, and stare down at the floor in the direction of the bar, calling on you magic to enchant your vision. You can see a light, dancing like a little golden flame in the main room below, you feel a little sick looking at it.

Definitely "good" then, pretty strong too, as you watch, the little golden flame moves towards where you think the door is, and outside towards the stables, where another, larger golden flame dances.

Then the magic ends, and the golden flames disappear from your vision. You heave a mental sigh of relief that the man seems to be leaving. and sit down at the small table in your shared room.

Karin's already climbed into bed, probably to escape the awkward moment. So cute, you could probably just... No, no, not doing that.

Cont. With Avitus in the next post.

>>40802604
Basically the stronger the individual is, the brighter the little "flame" appears. Detect alignment works kind of weirdly. If you recall, Avitus showed as "Evil" when Jasmine used detect evil on you back in the bandit camp
>>
>>40802534

Lawful evil is great. It's also pretty much the only evil alignment i can rp.
>>
>>40802749
Neutral Evil's pretty fun. If you're smart about it you can justify pretty much anything.
>>
>>40802743
Avitus POV

You and Ergon have been walking for a while, and you can see the village now, it's small collection of buildings twinkling like little lights in the night. As you approach, you can see an armored figure, mounted on a white horse, ride off in the direction of the burnt down village you used to live in, that's odd. Could it be that one of the paladin's is returning to the cathedral? There shouldn't be any heading back that way for a long time yet. Anyways, there're things you need to do, but what will you do first?

>Go get your reward from the village warden for clearing the goblin cave
>Go back to the inn, you need to heal and rest.
>Other?
>>
>>40802819

That's neutral evil. But the thing about selfish intentions is that you can generally twist them around enough such that you're motivated to do almost anything.
Spare that man? Having someone in my debt is always a good card to have up my sleeve.
Save that orphanage? All part of my long term plan to ingratiate myself with this community and gain political power.
Save the world? Well, I obviously can't rule over it if it's already been destroyed, can I?

>>40802934
>>40802884

Warden it is. writing. Also, how do you guys see Avitus? Is he a manipulator, a leader, does he believe he's doing the right hing, or is he just out for revenge. I'm asking because having a basic framework for what you guys want the character to develop as will help me to structure your thoughts, and write options that fit what you might be likely to do. Just toss some ideas out for how you see the character forming.
>>
>>40803034
The thing is that as far as I'm reading them, neither Avitus, Jasmine nor Ergon see themselves as evil. Instead, they see their former goddess (whose name escapes me at this moment) as evil for unjustly spurning them - and therefore any would-be evil actions they take against her are righteous, since she is the greater evil.

But apart from that, the ways they have presumably been raised - which motivated them to join an order of paladins - mean they are far more likely to do things which can be considered good, though perhaps now in ways that may adhere less strictly to the creeds they had previously been taught.
>>
>>40803123
For the moment, he believe's he's doing the right thing. Revenge is a driving force, but the lives of him and his friends come above the lives of all others.

First things first, you need to go see the town warden about your payment. Now that the rest of your party is dead, you won't have to split the reward of course.

Now that you think of it, you can turn in that bandit leaders head if he had a bounty on him. You could end up a good deal richer after this. You make your way to the wardens office.

The warden is an older man, whose easy life is clearly getting to him, his stomach hangs over his belt, and numerous glasses of alcohol lay scattered about the room. You enter, and he stand up

"Ah, the adventurer's, yes. Here for your payment no doubt? Where's that bald feller who was with you? Ah no matter, no matter. So long as you brought me the head of the ugly brute who was leadin em, eh?"

Several minutes later, you leave the building, short the hobgoblin and the bandits head, but with quite a large sum of riches instead. The bandit was apparently named Scarface Ugo or something, and had been terrorizing the area for some time.

The Warden was a little quicker to hand over the money when you gave him the big lunks head.

The inn is a mess, picking your way through the broken tables, no doubt the work of some bar-fight that got out of hand, you pick way towards the stairs that lead to the second floor. It's pretty late now, and you're quite tired.

You knock on the door to jasmine's room, and before long, it opens, and Jasmine comes barreling out, locking you and Ergon in a hug.

After a few seconds she breaks her grip, and starts frantically motioning with her hands, you can't quite make out what she's trying to say, but you know it's something to do with danger.

You hand her the slate, and she grabs it, looking relieved. She quickly scrawls out, ~Paladin of Lady just left town~

Well, this could change things. How exactly it changes things, you're not sure. You can't even be sure if he's after you, but either way it's not good news. You make your way over to the table, spreading out the map you retrieved from the hobgoblin lair
"That's probably going to be a problem, but for now we need to figure out where we're going next"

Make your plans

Agreed. The most "evil" thing we've done is "murder" some of The Lady's greedy lying followers, after which we turned to dark powers, because The Lady deserted us, in order to save our friend's life.
We were planning on lying to that guy in the goblin caves, but honesty is a luxury of the "good" followers of the Lady and those like her.
Now we can add "buying" a slate to our list of evil acts.

You'll still have adventures with a small party, I wouldn't take away your dungeon-crawling if you want it.
>>
>>40804671
It isn't not having adventures in a small party that's the problem. It's that, as far as I've seen, having extensive management tends to involve detailed systems of mechanics which bog down quests as players debate over the fine details of each decision.

Of course, if you can institute a means of managing a large army that won't run into this problem, (perhaps by making only the large decisions and leaving the minutia to a secretary?), then I suppose that should run far more smoothly.
>>
>>40804479
You point out the castle in the woods to your friends. "I've never heard of this place before, I'd be willing to bet there's something we could use in there. And we need to get stronger." >>
>>40805871
Mechanically speaking, we may as well grapple with Vampiric Touch for one-to-one mana to damage conversion (with the added benefit of healing ourselves), so unless the base damage for Screaming Void is really high, there's not much reason for us to use it, especially bearing in mind the risk involved.
>>

Screaming Void's base damage is 10

>>

>>
>>40805988
Mana cost is 7 chance to backfire depends on the situation. Basically it's your Deus Ex Machina spell
>>
>>40805954
>>40805796
Well it depends if its an aoe or one target attack. Slaying, or messing up, a group of enemies could be very worth it even if its at the cost of putting a party member, aka us, out of a fight. That and I'm pretty sure the red potion we have are health related.
>>
>>40806015
Magic has kind of a tier system, you can actually upgrade spells as you get better, one of the upgrades for Screaming Void lets you choose to turn it into an AOE, one of the upgrades for Dark Lance let's you conjure multiple at once, etc. There's some pretty badass upgrades

Your trip through the forest is uneventful, the forest is oddly silent, and as you travel you notice that you don't see any animals, other than Ravens. Large, black ravens with shining feathers and hooked beaks, if you didn't know better, you'd swear they were watching you, this forest is putting your nerves on edge. Your nights are silent, only the crackling of your campfire making any noise, ravens can be seen in the branches of nearby trees whenever you make camp.

By the second day, you're tired from the travel, and you push a little man into your eyes and limbs to keep yourself fresh, as you do, you think you feel something touch you, almost as if somebody had reached out and tapped your soul. You see the ravens more often after that, but they continue to do nothing. You could swear some of their beaks have blood on them, but they're to far away to tell.

As you travel through the forest, you could swear that you feel something guiding you, subtly showing you a path that you think you might have missed otherwise. You make good time through the woods, and on the third day, you see the castle.

The land slowly sinks away beneath you, leading to a massive valley hidden in the forest, no wonder nobody could ever find this place before, the way the land is shaped perfectly hides the castles tall spires from view, the castle looks ancient, made of black stone, many towers look as though they have collapsed under the strain of years.

The castle is sitting on top of a large rock deposit, almost like a small mountain rising in the middle of the bowl.

As you stand there, an odd feeling develops inside of you, something about that castle feels... Right, you can't think of any other way to put it.

Small dark shapes wheel around it's tallest spire. From where you stand at the edge of the bowl, you can see a paved road, leading up the side of the small mountain towards the castles front gate.

It seems the map was not completely accurate, understandable given how nobody has ever explored so deep into the woods before.

You estimate that it will take you another day an a half to make your way to the castles front door, you are beginning to run a little low on supplies, and you estimate that you have enough to feed the four of you for another three days.

Do you push on?
>Y/N

For those of you confused, the land gradually slopes downward so that the castles tallest spire is about as tall as the trees around at the edge of the bowl, which is why nobody knew that there was a fuck-mothering castle in the forest

Over the course of the next day, you pick your way down the side of the bowl, making your way through the open fields that surround the castle, and heading towards the road leading to it's drawbridge.

As you draw closer, you can clearly see that the pinwheeling shapes are more ravens, huge ones judging by how well you can see them from here, spinning in great circles around the tallest tower, you could swear you see a light at the top.

You approach the castles front gate, it appears that lieu of a moat, the castle has a massive gap in between the entrance and the end of the road, the large drawbridge has long since fallen down, spanning the gap and acting as a bridge for you and your friends to cross.

You enter into the castles walls, crossing into what you assume is the main courtyard, a large area of dead grass and withered shrubs. I front of you, the door to the castles main hall stands slightly ajar, to your left, a set of stairs leads up the inner wall of the castle, and to your right, a path leads of around a corner

You walk forward towards the grand doors leading into the main hall, pushing them open with little difficulty, you enter into a massive room, a huge dead firepit filled with ashes long since burned out sits in the middle of the room, with six large tables sitting around it in a ( O ) pattern.

A second floor can be seen above, with a balcony lining the two sides of the walls, massive columns hold the balconies in place, bearing banners so faded you cannot make out the pattern on them.

At the opposite end of the room, at the end of a raised dais with stairs leading up to it, sits a Large throne, lava running from the massive fixture behind the throne, through cracks in the ground, and draining off into a pair of culverts set on either wall.

Some magic keeps the lava from melting the rock on either side, and you'd be willing to bet that you could walk across it as though it were stone.

Multiple smaller thrones sit at either side of the foot of the dais, apparently reserved for high-ranking members of the former rulers court.

Something about this place feels so familiar, as though you lived here your whole life, and are just now remembering, you could swear you'd seen that throne before, somewhere. You feel yourself drawn to the throne.

A pair of staircase's lead behind the throne to two doors, one going to the left and one going off to the right.

You walk up the steps to the left of the throne, heading for the door, and your friends follow as if in a daze. The doorway leads into a passage that eventually opens into what appears to be a massive ballroom, the large windows letting in light are in disrepair, and everything speaks of incredible age. Several ironwork chandeliers hang from the ceiling. As you enter the room, you see several more doors leading off in various directions,

>One door is open, and leads to a passageway, that turns to one side before you can see where it leads

>One door is torn off it's hinges, and you think you can hear the sound of something large in the room behind it

>One door is slightly ajar, and leads to a flight of stairs going down.

Which doorway do you go through?

Are there actually enough people here for me to keep going, or should I call it for the night and run again tomorrow? This castle is kind of an important segment
>>
>>40808556

Give us a cliffhanger and have the monster charge out. Then call it a night!

Better to catch everyone tomorrow
>>
>>40808556
It seems like there are only a couple people. So if you would be more comfortable wait on more people then that's fine.

You approach the ruined door, hammer and shield in hand.

As you draw closer, you can definitely hear the sound of something large behind the door, moving around.

You look inside the door, and there, laying in the middle of the passage, is a massive, starved looking purple cat-like monster, with two long tentacle like apendages on it's back, ending in pads covered in nasty looking spikes.

It's gnawing on what appears to be an old skeleton, and as you look, it's ears prick up, it's head swivels around to face you, it comes to it's feet, and it lunges at you, its mouth opened wide!

And that's where we stop for the night folks. I'll answer any questions comments etc.
Sorry for ending so early, but I don't feel comfortable going through this segment with a small number of people. If you guys can keep this bumped until others show up, I'll just continue on here, but I'll probably keep going in a new thread tomorrow. any appropriate scenery art would be greatly appreciated.
