You’re immediate goal is to stay alive. That is the best you can hope for right now. There is no time to dwell on the past, or to look to the future. Focus on the present.

You have been walking in the wind and rain for a day and night. It is dawn, and you have finished the last fistful of dry bread you managed to take with you before ‘that’ incident. You’re in unfamiliar territory; when you made your escape in the back of a merchant’s wagon you ate and slept beneath its shelter for two days before you were found and chased off by the owner.

You rest your aching feet once more at a crossroads; you’re in a vast open plain with waist high stones signalling the farmland of whoever owns them. It’s spitting rain and all you have to shelter you is your bed-clothes, made of cheap linen, and the damp blanket you had the sense of mind to huddle yourself with during your escape. You have clothed your bare feet in rags torn from your blanket to lessen the pain.

You need to eat, drink, and find shelter; though whether you wish to do this by honest means depends on you, and those around you. You were always told by your dear Uncle how unforgiving the world, or rather the people in it, can be. Luckily, a boy of sixteen, you are:

>Of a strong build and good health.
>Well-read and quick-witted.
>Handsome with a charismatic disposition.

Choose a major (A) and a minor (B); the one not chosen will become a negative. For instance if you do not major or minor ‘of a strong build’ you will instead find yourself of a weak build, and so on.

(This OP will be slow-posting; this will be to keep a standard to the writing quality of the Quest and to properly gage what anons want before posting.)

I assume it's pretty slow on the board right now. I'll bump now and again to keep this thread from dying.

I'll bite:

Major: well read
Minor: good health

But we're arrogant and unlikeable, and not especially attractive.

I'm cutting him a break since this quest isn't about fucking DBZ or lolis, you should too.

Yup, this anon speaks the truth. let's have some grimdarkness

Yeah, but it IS coming off as grimdark, which got boring back when this was still nothing more than a containment board for WH40k

Post coming in a minute anons.

You continue down the trodden path, huddled against the rain. As you walk you think back to the tale of Harold the Bold; a fierce knight who travelled from village to village, city to city, finding himself in all manner of heroic adventures, finding his way into the beds of Ladies and Farm Daughters alike. It bothers you to know you’ll likely never read that book again, the book your Uncle gave you; it perished in the towering flames which engulfed your home along with the small library you liked to spend long hours reading of the great deeds of others.

You spot a man and his mule creeping up the side of the dirt road. The man is in his fifties, his head shaved, beared speckled with grey hairs; his mule is scrawny and underfed, carrying camping equipment and, more importantly, food and water.

The old man and his mule meet you. The man shows no sign of stopping; but eyes you warily all the same. You can see the mule’s breath catching in the cold morning air. You must remember ‘they’ might still be looking for you; you can’t be sure, if they are talking to this man may put you in danger...

>Ask the man for some water.
>Ask the man is a village is nearby.
>Keep walking.
>Ask for work, if he has it.

‘Good Ser’ you say, looking directly at the man. His eyes meet your gaze; he doesn’t slow. He pulls the reins to his mule and carries on down the way. You follow him, more desperate now.

‘Good Ser, I mean to ask if you have but a cupful of water to spare?’

The man stops and turns to you with a raised eyebrow.

‘You a lord?’ he says ‘You sure speak like one. Look like a beggar though, fallen on hard time have you?’

In truth you are not a lord; what you really are is a longer story, however you know what it is like to be brought up around lords, and to serve them, and were fortunate enough to be well-read and to speak like them. Will you use this to your advantage? It is against common law to call yourself a lord when you are not; one may lose a hand if he is so bold; will you follow in Harold’s footsteps?

>Yes, I am a lord, good ser.
>I was a servant, good ser.

‘I was a servant, ser’ you say, honestly. The man shows no more interest and carries on down the dirt road. ‘They had me tend the stables, cook, clean--’

‘--and what happened to your Lords, eh, boy?’ yells the man as he walks away. ‘D’you kill them? Steal from them?’

The truth is far more painful; your Uncle, an adviser to the house of Regmond, was murdered by a new lord by the name of Torvel. You were sentenced to death as a conspirator and nearly burned alive inside your home. You do not know why your Uncle was murdered, only that an attempt on your life was made and you barely escaped.

‘Where is the nearest village?’ you ask.

‘Three miles further down’ says the man, his voice becoming faint as the wind picks up and he draws further away. It is clear this man does not wish to help a boy in need, even a well-spoken one. Perhaps honesty might save you, or not.

>I am fleeing from the house of Regmond for crimes I do not know. I seek refuge.
>Steal from the man.
>Carry on your way.

>Steal from the man.

Go in the direction of the village, but don't enter it. They might look for us there. It's better to steal what we need and camp close to it.

We are smart and not charismatic, I don't think talking to the villagers will get us much help
>>
>>40797600

Guys, we are wanted! politeness, honest work and being seen in general will get us killed
>>
>>40797764
Scumbagery and illicit actions will bring the unwanted uttention, as people will report on us
Gotta keep the low profile
>>
>>40797771

I don't know, I may be shadowrunning but I think they will report us regardless if asked.

I mean, hat reason would this man have to lie to an authority figure on our behalf?
>>
>>40797805
Pity?
>>
Carry on.
>>
>>40797805
They might, yes. It`s not like we`re going to stay at one place awhile, though.
People tend to remember dickwads better than polite, bland, unrecognisable folk

‘Thank you for your kindness, Ser’

The man ignores you and keeps on his way. Your stomach aches with hunger; you were fed reasonably well as a servant. You’ve never been this hungry before. You brace yourself in the cold and carry on down the way. Stormclouds loom over head, as if it couldn’t get any worse; soon enough a village comes into view which you can see perched on the lift of a steep hill. It’s surrounded by more farmland; you can see clumps of people standing outside its gates selling wares.

You do not know if there is a price on your head; certainly know one will know you from your face, and you’ll have to come up with a new name. What are your strengths? You’re well-read; so that puts you ahead of many who can’t read, and you’re in good health, albeit weakened in your current state; you’re also a young man, finding work shouldn’t prove too difficult. But you’ll have to find the right kind of work.

When you arrive at the village gates you are met by a gaurd in tough leather armour holding a shield and mace.

‘What’s your business?’ he says.

‘I am looking for work, ser’ you say ‘I am of good health and literate. I mean for honest work for honest pay’

The guard asks your name.

What is your name?

>Venrick

‘Elric, ser’ you say.

Now may also be a good time to disguise your noble accent, no telling what trouble this may cause further down the line. Or you may rather use it to your advantage, best to make the choice now.

>Hide Accent
>Don’t Hide

‘Before I can let you enter you’ll need your head shaved’ says the guard ‘we’ve had a breakout of lice; all poor are required to be cut before entering.’

He pulls out a razor for you to use.

>Shave your head

You sit in the cold shaving your own head; as you do so you and the guard spot a man climbing over the gates, hitting the gravel, then sprinting off down the hill as far as his legs will carry him. A moment later another guard, followed by an old woman holding a broom like a weapon, come shouting after him calling for his arrest. The guard who gave you the razor bolts off after the hunted man.
