Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. You have recently killed a pack of demons threatening San Francisco, and graduated high school. Now, you are travelling cross country on the ultimate road trip with your friends.

This is the time for you to discover your inner spirit animal, explore America (and Canada, you guess) accrus landwells, meet interesting people, and kill them.

The first real stop on your quest will be Fresno, where you’ve got some family buried. Then it’s on to national parks and mountains and who knows what.

--

You can see why people thought the world was flat. The drive into Fresno is nothing but flatness as far as the eye can see – orchards and farms, but flat orchards and farms. You definitely prefer some geography in a place.

Anyway, as it turns out, your cemetery isn’t really in the city so much as it is nearby. But seeing as this trip is more about distance travelled and natural wonders explored than cities toured, nobody’s got a problem with skipping the city entirely. You’ll hit up some graves, then get back on the road toward the mountains where the fun really begins.

“Turn here,” says Rowan, showing you the map on her phone.

“I see it,” you say, ignoring Google in favor of the expansive field riddled with headstones in the distance. It was kind of a pain navigating the suburbs to find this place, but now you’ve got it locked in.
>>
>>40788530

You’re the only people visiting today, looks like. The parking lot is empty. You hop out with the others, and survey a part of the graveyard. You haven’t really given it much thought, neither about how you should be feeling right now, nor about how exactly you’re going to find your mom and Nevada’s graves.

You remember the smell of the trees here, so that’s a good sign you’re in the right place, you guess.

Rowan tugs her baseball cap down to shield her eyes from the sun. “You doing okay?” she asks.

“Just need to find them,” you say, clutching your poppies in hand. “Only so many out there, I guess.”

Xanissil pipes up. “Might I accompany you?” she asks. “I have long dreamt of paying homage to the Dread Corithis. Her body was presumed lost.”

Moriah gives Xan a flat look. “This is about Sierra,” she says. “Give her space.”

Moriah’s usually right - plus you don’t really feel very sociable right now. “Just maybe Ro on this one,” you tell Xan. “Sorry.”

Xan’s a little disappointed, but she doesn’t let it show.

“We’ll go on a walk,” says Vikrama, taking Xan’s hand and leading her away. Moriah follows after them, leaving you and Rowan alone.

“We could probably talk to the undertaker or something,” says Rowan.

You shrug. “There’s only so many dead people in this place,” you say. “I’m sure there’s a directory around here.”

It only takes a minute to locate said directory. There’s a sign with a map of the cemetery, which you and Ro consult. It’s not exact, but you eliminate some family plots and older sections from your search grid.

You’re glad you borrowed one of Ro’s hats, because otherwise you’d be dead. The sun beats down mercilessly on your skull, though the heat you can deal with. It’s just those deadly UV skin cancer rays.

You and Ro walk down the rows, glimpsing headstone after headstone.

“What kind of name is Pete Snarr?” you ask, eyeing a particular gravestone. “I am Snarr, king and dragon both.”

Rowan refrains from laughing. “It’s a person’s name,” she says. “It just is what it is. You don’t need to laugh at them.”

“A name’s not a person without a person to go with it,” you say. “I mean, you can’t really laugh at somebody when you’ll never actually know who they are.”

“It just feels weird to me,” she says.

“Well. You’re missing out.”

You continue down the line, checking headstones. As you go, you notice there’s some kind of magic lingering around the place. It’s subtle – subtle enough you didn’t notice it at first. But now that you’re listening for it, you definitely feel something going on. There’s a general air of power to this place – old and hidden, but definitely there.
>>
>>40789134

Some graves have more funk going on than others.

Rowan notices your distractedness. “You still feeling okay?”

The question kind of catches you off guard, because now that you’re paying attention to your feelings, you realize they’re kind of confused right now. All the sun’s not helping either. (+4 Stress: 23)

>I’m a peach.

“Like, I’m not depressed or whatever, if that’s what you mean,” you say.

“Well if you’re not sad, how do you feel?” she asks.

“I don’t know. Not sad?” you say. “Just... not that.”

“Okay,” she says.

You walk on, but the magic stuff’s getting to you. “Do you feel that? Lots of magic going on around here.”

Ro nods. “You get that in some cemeteries. When people die, especially people with magic, there’s a lot of energy that stays around,” she says.

“Oh. Like the stuff that attracts ghouls and makes ghosts and whatnot?” you ask.

“Yeah,” says Ro. “And it lingers too. Like. For decades. Or even longer.”

“Seems like you guys are always dealing with that kind of crap,” you say. Banshees or specters or what have you, it’s always something.

Ro rolls her eyes. “Just part of the job. But yeah. Here’s pretty intense. Sometimes more magically inclined people keep their graves closer together so they’re easier to keep track of. Maybe that’s why it’s so obvious around here.”

Well, if powerful people leave powerful graves, you’d think your mom would qualify.

And you guess you’re kind of right. Because even though there’s a lot of grave aura junk going on, there’s something different emanating from further into the lot. You ditch the current row of headstones and follow your grave sense toward it, with Rowan following behind.

It’s nothing fancy. Two blocks of cement, side by side, weather worn and grainy.

The one on the left reads Cornelia Beckhoff, 1950-2002, with ‘Loving mother’ inscribed below. The one of the right reads Nevada Beckhoff, 1997-2002. There’s no inscription written under her name.

“1950?” you say, snorting to yourself. “That’s a joke.”

A kind of sad, coppery feeling gets you at your back, but Ro doesn’t say anything other than that. Man, she’s even more messed up about this than you are.

You ignore her for the time being, and kneel down by the headstones. You unclutch your hand-picked poppies, and carefully arrange a couple for your mom, and a couple for your sister. The flowers look kind of tiny when compared to the grainy stones they’re laid against. You wonder if anybody’s put flowers here in the last ten years. Probably not, now that you’re thinking about it.

“Well uh. Sorry I don’t visit more often,” you say to the stones, continuing to fiddle with the poppies, not so much because you don’t like where they are, but more just because you don’t know what else to do. “Just kind of hard because a bunch of dumb junk kept coming up. And I kind of forgot where you were.”

You sit there for a couple more seconds, then rub your forehead and smirk back at Rowan. “All right, it's a little sad now, I guess,” you tell her. She just nods in response.

You stand and dust off your knees, taking a second to run your fingers along both of the grave markers. “See you guys later,” you say. And then you start walking off, concentrating carefully on where you’re putting your feet.

You feel Rowan at your side.

“Thought Dad might be there by now,” you say, feeling kind of disappointed for some reason. Maybe they just lobbed him in the nearest hole they could find. At least, you hope they did. You’re not sure what exactly happened to him, but the more you learn about stuff, the more you’re of the opinion it wasn’t good.

You decide to say something to Rowan. “You know, the whole boat incident thing, I only really remember my dad pulling me onto the beach,” you say. “But I mean. He might have pulled Nev out instead. Sometimes I wonder if anything’d be different at all if he did.” Nobody could tell you apart anyway.
>>
>>40790878

Maybe it’d be like life mark 2, except you wouldn’t be in your shoes, and Nevada would have to deal with all the junk you deal with. And you guess all the good stuff you deal with, too. And she’d be visiting your grave today. (-2 Sanity: 96)

“He pulled you out,” Rowan tells you. “That’s what happened. He could save you and he did. And I’m glad he did, so don’t say stuff like that.”

Eh. Ro’s right. And her getting all indignant about it kind of makes you feel partially better. (+1 Sanity: 97) “I’m just yanking your chain,” you lie.

“Some chains don’t like being yanked,” she says, not believing you. She’s too smart, and the way she’s looking at you makes you feel like you made some kind of mistake. (+2 Stress: 25)

You and Rowan head back to the car. Except there’s somebody else in the graveyard now, and you get the feeling they’re not here to pay respects.

There’s a somber, older gentleman, with too many wrinkles and leathery, sun-bleached skin. He wears a pair of jeans and a button down t-shirt neatly tucked in, as well as a thick pair of prescription sunglasses and a cowboy hat.

If he didn’t move to look at you, you might have assumed he was made of wax. He adjusts his glasses and calls out in a dry, crispy voice as you and Rowan try to hedge on by. “Haven’t had a visitor for the Beckhoffs in a long time.”

Power gleams from him, but it has the same subtle energy as the rest of the cemetery. It’s kind of an unsavory magic, now that you’ve had a chance to feel it out a little bit better. (Old Grave Guy: 14 PP)

>Yeah? What’s it to you?

“Yeah?” you say. “What’s that have to do with you?”

“Maybe he works here,” Rowan suggests.

“Or maybe he’s just one of those creepers that hangs out in graveyards and accosts people,” you counter. “You know the type.”

“I’m fairly sure I don’t,” Ro says.

“I work here,” the old man confirms, making no move to leave the gravestone bench, “but no, I don’t usually accost people. Can’t stand people in general if I’m honest.”

You can understand that, you guess. “So what, you here last time somebody dropped by?” you ask.

The stranger nods. “Only time anybody ever did, if you don’t count the burial,” he says. “Must’ve been ten years ago.”

You look at him suspiciously. “You’ve got a good memory.”

“Only reason I remember is because the visitor was a friend of mine, David,” he says. He squints through his glasses at you, though you’re unsure if he really sees anything or if he’s just really good at pretending. “Speaking of, you look a lot like him – tar-black hair, pasty skin.”

Rowan glances at you to take the lead on this one.

The old man laughs. “I’ve heard everything there is to hear about that Nazi son of a bitch. It’s over my head making heads or tails of any of it.”

Wait. Nazi?

Rowan gives you a look out of the corner of her eye.

Usually. We don't know if that's always the case anymore. We just met Lucifer a couple threads ago, and he's a Tartaran-Verwelken mix. He shouldn't be able to use shadows, but he can.

I'm starting to suspect that making a viable [VE]+[IN] hybrid is as simple as just stacking as much bullshit strong lineage as possible. The mix doesn't just "make explode", it causes uncontrolled power generation which overloads the hybrid's body and that causes the explode. If the kid's ancestors are already stupid powerful, then they get a body that's already set up for dealing with stupid power and they can handle it better. Probably.
Or Sierra was magically restricted somehow to slow the growth.

More likely a combination of the two of those, though.

“Well. Yeah,” you say lamely. “I mean. What gave it up? The fact I look exactly like him? The fact I’m the only person to visit my mom’s grave in ten fucking years?”

“I don’t need your sass, girl,” says the guy.

“You sure as hell are getting it though,” you tell him.

“Sierra,” Rowan says gently.

You let the guy off the hook for a couple seconds.

You still can’t believe your dad was a Nazi. Well, you can, and it kind of makes sense given the context. You just never really thought Dad was that old. You guess you never asked, and you were too young to pick up any clues if there even were any. It’s not like he ever mentioned Germany or anything.

Your wonderment isn’t lost on the crypt watcher, and he shakes his head, disappointed. “Girl, you need to sit your daddy down and have a talk if he’s keeping those kinds of secrets from you,” he says. “That man would keep his whole life in the shadows if he could.”

“Yeah, my dad’s dead,” you inform your dad’s alleged friend.

It’s his turn to be surprised. “Excuse me?”

Get a load of this jerk ass. Didn’t even know. Your blood boils, and this time it has nothing to do with the sun. (+6 Stress: 34)

“You know why nobody showed up in ten fucking years?” you ask, barely keeping your voice from shaking. “Cause I was a fucking kid at the funeral, I didn’t know where they were buried. I just figured I’d Google grave sites a few months ago, and hey, looks like it worked. Don’t pretend like you even give a fuck. If you cared you could have dropped me a line or something, anything, so I could put some damn flowers on my family’s grave.”

The old man is kind of left in a stupor at your rant.

You find you’re a lot nearer to the guy than you were when you started raving, and you have the insatiable urge to shove him off his stupid bench, but you find something big and strong holding you back.

“Let go of me,” you say, removing Rowan’s hands from your shoulders. “I’m not going to murder a guy for being an asshole.”

“Good,” says Ro. “Look. Don’t be stupid. You have every reason to be mad. But this guy, maybe he knows something?” She looks at the old man. “What’s your name?”

“Monty Mayer,” he says, a kind of bitter shock emanating from him. He looks at you, though you’d rather he didn’t. “How’d he go? No, forget that. Listen - David was good at disappearing. I thought... he’d come calling sooner or later, but I thought he took you someplace safe and hunkered down. Severed ties. The last thing either of you’d need was somebody messing that up by asking the wrong questions.”

>Like, hey, it’d be nice if you could let me know you’re actually dead and your daughter just got foisted into foster care. Yeah, that’d be a pretty inconvenient question to ask.

When Sierra is stressed and pissed, she has a habit of being an edgemaster turbocunt. Because she is a damaged person. Yes, she has been getting better about this.

But visiting her Mother and Sister's grave for the first time, in the glaring sun, while having some dude act shitty to her about her Dad and casually dropping the Nazi thing, is kind of pushing a lot of buttons at once here.

How Sierra reacts is not necessarily how you or I would react.

It is highly unreasonable to paint everyone with the same brush, in almost any context.

I mean ideal situations aside, where you judge and reflect on each individual on the merit of their own actions and beliefs, making exceptions where it's convenient isn't the answer to the debate, "is Rommel a Nazi because he's a German, is he a Nazi because he served in the military, or is he a Nazi because of who his nation's leader was, and thus his overall commander?"

Considering Rommel died for being complicit in a coup to displace Hitler, further, advocating for a non-violent coup, the highly complex web of deceit, danger, dishonor and yet valor, adherence to one's beliefs and demonstrated responsibility for one's actions after the war shows that one fish is not like the other, even if they swim closely together.

Basically, are you insane?

Yeah, like the inconvenient question of hey, it’d be nice if you could let me know you’re actually dead and your daughter just got foisted into foster care.

But Rowan’s presence reminds you not to totally rip this guy’s head off. He doesn’t deserve the attention. The only thing he’s got for you is information. You should just be out for yourself, not for your seething rage.

You pinch your nose for a second, taking a deep breath to try to regain control of the situation. “Whatever,” you tell Monty. “I couldn’t care less about you as a person right now, but... you know stuff I don’t. And I kind of need to know that stuff. Like... like how did you even know David? What’re you to him?” you ask.

Monty’s face turns about the color of ash. Maybe something about letting his old pal down and also earning your hate. “I helped him get into the country after the war,” says the old man. “I used to work with documents. Investigating forgeries for the police and tracing counterfeiters.”

Rowan sits down next to him, though you elect to remain standing. “So you forged them too?” she asks.

“Rarely, and not for any old bum off the street,” he says, sounding offended. “Just for the ones that deserved it. And your dad,” he looks at you, “he was dealt a bad hand, but he deserved a second chance. And then... we stayed in touch.”

You realize you don’t really know the guy’s age. He’s old – he’d have to be at least like, a ninety years old, maybe. Maybe he could pass for seventy though. But given he’s around Isaac’s age, he’s definitely no spring chicken like your current new guardian dad is. Looks can be deceiving.

“You know anything else about my dad I should know?” you ask. “Like, I don’t even know.” You don’t even know what else there is.

Monty seems reluctant to share with Ro present, but she just smiles. “Sierra’s my best friend. If you can tell her, you can tell me,” she says.
>>
>>40793612

“Well,” says Monty, frowning, “I don’t know if you’re familiar with the term, but... David was something called a ‘landmaster’.”

“Hold on. With like, landwells and crap?” you ask. “Did he legit tell you this?”

“Well, no. But he travelled a lot, that’s for certain. And the kinds of company he kept... he was always getting more powerful. More powerful than anything I’ve ever seen, the last time I saw him,” says the man.

You thought your mom was a landmaster, and it was dad? Or what if they both were? Was that how they met? Or was that in the World War II thing? “Holy crap,” you say. “Wait wait wait. The company he kept? You know any of his other friends?”

The old man shakes his head. “I can’t help you there. I only heard rumors, and they never matched up,” he says. “All I know is David was the friend to have.”

“But... if he was all old and powerful and junk,” you say, “I mean, he had to have like, a fortune, and like, tons of magical crap. Did he... I mean, did he leave you with anything, or did he tell you about anything?”

“I’m sorry,” he says. “I really can’t say.”

You go to kick an available tombstone, but pull up short. Even you’re not that much of a jerk. “Dammit.”

Rowan leans over toward Monty. “You know, it doesn’t have to be something specific,” she says. “Just anything to help us find out more.”
>>
>>40793622

The man scratches the side of his head for a brief moment. “Only thing I can think about is where I holed him up for a few weeks after he sailed in,” says Monty. “It was one of those little rentable sheds, you know, basically a personalized shipping crate.”

“You have an address?” you ask, feeling oddly tense.

“No, but I could point it out on a map,” he says. “I don’t know what’s there now, but might be someplace to start.

Rowan flips her phone out and pulls up google. As it turns out, the place in question is in New York.

“We’re actually headed that way... eventually,” says Ro. “Thanks for the help.”

“I wish I could have done more for you,” he tells you, taking a deep breath. “Still hard to think David’s not off in Wyoming someplace, remarried with a farm. But that man had his priorities straight, so I reckon he’s not. He’d have his little girl with him.” He shakes his head. “Now that’s a shame.”

>C’mon. I’m sick of this place, let’s get out of here.
>What’s a shame is I’ll have to see you every time I drop by.
>You keep flowers or something on those graves from now on, got it?
>You owe me. Don’t you forget it.

[Well, I have to go to sleep now. Next thread on Saturday, maybe. We'll see.]

"So... what are you exactly? And don't lie, I can feel the power coming off you."

Humans can be this strong, especially if he's 90+ years old and spends most of his time marinating in a magic graveyard. 14PP is better than baseline human but it's still not really all that much.

how much power did you feel coming off him in comparison to me?

I don't think he can really tell beyond vague feelings. Sierra can only see PP as well as she can because Belphegoran.

don't matter, it will be good to know just how powerful he was because if he was killed it would have been something even more powerful, and he can give a vague answer and it will still be useful

ask him if there actually were corpses at the funeral.

Well who knows what the fuck he is. We can only see that he has some power. He might even be able to tell us>>40794056
