Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you pet a kitty, made a dramatic exit, and showed your friends some things they'd rather not see.

It is currently the 12th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You reach instinctively to your chest, feeling for your brooch. Of course its not there, you took it off when you shed your robes. You extricate yourself from Aisha, mumbling something about washing yourself by way of excuse. However, as you rise from the bed you notice something digging uncomfortably into your back. A cursory examination reveals the cause of your discomfort, your communication brooch has embedded itself in the fabric of the mattress.

You quickly pluck your brooch from the fabric of the mattress, careful not to tear the cotton wrap, and carry it with you into Aisha's bedroom. You slide the door shut and run the water, only then turning your attention to the mental connection shared between you and Profectus. {What do you mean?}

A general sense of amusement, tempered by vague annoyance, drifts through the mental link. {I mean you've been waking me up every few minutes or so to bombard my thoughts with images of you screwing some woman. By the way, are all Samjan hairless down there or does she remove the hair? Don't get me wrong, last time I checked Elven women didn't exactly grow a bramble bush between their legs, but-}

You can't be bothered to pay attention while he elucidates the differences in pubic hair growth between the various sapient races. Rather, your thoughts turn towards your other companions. Did you transmit only to Profectus, or to everyone linked to you via the brooches? Do you really want to find out?
(1/2)
>>
Fulvia's voice intrudes upon your increasingly worried thoughts, the vastness of her alien mind brushing against your own. {I am pleased to see that you have found release, Dux. It is often the case that a commanding officer who too strictly refrains from the pleasures of the flesh finds his thoughts clouded. That said, I must caution against over indulgence. Such physical exertion may lead to a pulled muscle or the shirking of one's duties in favor of more pleasurable pursuits.}

Pani be merciful, Fulvia saw it too? Wait, maybe Fulvia seeing it isn't such a bad thing. If you recall correctly, she constantly monitors the network of connections between you and your companions. {Fulvia, who have I been in communication with? Who else did I show that too?}

She responds with her usual promptness. {In alphabetical order you have been in communication with Chryssa, Darzi, Demetrios, myself, Master Karim, Mortia, Profectus, and Thaddeus over the last six hours and thirteen minutes. I believe this is everyone to which your brooch is attuned. Thaddeus has been unreachable since shortly after you began to transmit your thoughts, Darzi has been unreachable for five hours and forty six minutes, and Chryssa has been unreachable for exactly five hours.}

Gods above, this is bad. You're not particularly concerned about most of your companions, though you do worry for Chrys. Knowing her she's either locked herself in her room or resolved to cave your skull in upon your return. This is bad. This is really bad.

Indigenous goat fuckers are more sensible than you. Early caveman and troglodytes had a better sense of propriety than you.

You briefly toy with the idea of explaining it away as a wet dream, but ultimately decide against it. You need to own up to this, and accept whatever consequences may come as a man. You probe the various links between your mind and the minds of your friends, trying to discern who's still awake.

Mortia's thoughts are a chaotic swirl of emotions, the most immediately identifiable being curiosity followed shortly thereafter by confusion. She seems awake. Profectus' thoughts are slowed and lethargic, you'd guess that he's only just woken up or he's smoked something. Of course, Fulvia is awake. You'd have difficulty discerning whether she's thinking or merely sitting idle, but she's certainly awake.

Your old Master seems to be asleep, his thoughts reach you only as subdued burst. The same is true of Demetrios, save his are much more vivid. He seems trapped in the midst of a fever dream, images of a great tower set alight reaching you briefly only to be washed away a moment later. Chryssa, Darzi, and Skull Kid are still unreachable, as much as you probe the connections to their brooches you feel nothing.

You're not sure whether you should apologize now or wait until later in the morning? You know most of your companions tend to sleep in rather late. Perhaps you could begin the journey back to your estate now so you can apologize in person? You've no other pressing matters to attend to, besides the payment of Aylin's tuition. You could always handle that via the brooches, with Demetrios acting as your proxy.

>Apologize to those of your companions who are awake, you may as well.

That's not really his fault. It's mostly us screaming about waifufags and antiwaifufags and having that impact our voting instead of doing in character actions.

Like I said this quest is too meta.

You take a few minutes to wash yourself, scouring your body clean with a strigil and then lathering yourself briefly with scented oils before finally rinsing yourself in the bath water. Once you no longer smell like a whore house you slip out of the bathroom as quietly as you can manage, crossing into Aisha's bedroom. She's waiting for you, propped up on her elbows when you arrive. Her smile falters as you begin to retrieve your clothes.

Aisha pushes herself fully into a sitting position, her expression confused and perhaps slightly hurt. “You're leaving so soon? Please, rest here the night. I'd prefer the company.”

You smile apologetically, struggling for a moment with your trousers. “As much as I'd love to my companions have called me to El-Amin.” You hold up your brooch, as if by way of explanation. “Dragons were seen circling above, and they fear an attack is imminent. I'd prefer to be there, just in case something does happen.” Not truly a lie, you are concerned about the increased number of dragons sighted in the area surrounding El-Amin.

Aisha seems to accept this, though she's wary. “You visit Anthus often, do you not?”

You shrug, tugging on your shirt one sleeve at a time and starting to work the buttons. “I suppose that's fair to say, every few weeks or so it seems. Usually I stay for a few days, before turning my attention to other things.”

She nods, pulling the covers around herself. “Good, I hope we can do this again, soon. Perhaps in a slightly more-” She gestures vaguely. “-Romantic setting. At least more romantic than a dockside bar with your friend.”

Of course she'd be clingy. Not that you're wholly against the idea, she seems nice enough. You must admit, she was a good lay. You've never had a woman with quite such extensive muscle control. You consider the idea while pulling on your boots. Would it really be so bad to have a mistress in Anthus?

Those +6 are for a thing that might decide almost over life and death, we also used it during the leech tug-of-war with the disciple.
The +4 we use again and again and again. I didn't count how often we succeeded a meditation only because of that trait or how often we had an unassisted success instead of a failure we needed to spend on.
So it's a very very useful trait.

You suppose maintaining a mistress wouldn't be such a bad thing. You're young, you're not married. What's the harm in it, really? “I think that sounds lovely, I'll look forward to it upon my next visit to Anthus.”

She smiles, obviously relieved, and you lean back to press your lips briefly against hers. As you stand up to retrieve your robes, a thought occurs to you. If you were to prick her finger on your brooch, and then she were to prick her finger on Demetrios' brooch, she'd be able to contact you via Demetrios. “Actually, give me your hand for a moment.”

She complies, offering her hand. You quickly press the sharpened end of the needle into the tip of her finger until blood's drown. She winces, but heals the cut a moment later. The metal of your brooch seems to absorb the drop, though you feel no new pathways opened. “You're now attuned to my brooch, and I'm attuned to Demetrios'. If you'll talk to him and spill a drop of blood on his brooch, we should be able to communicate freely.”

She raises an eyebrow. “That's useful, just where did you find such an artifact? I imagine such bits of jewelry would be quite common amongst the military of ancient Rhynia yet in all my expeditions I've yet to find a similar artifact.”

You grin. “I bought them off a traveling merchant by the name of Sadik, and I found a few more on an Island off the coast of the Shahdom which housed a Rhynian ruin. Pirates were using them to coordinate. Anyway, I really must be off but do feel free to contact me. I'm planning an expedition into the Pa'vala, so I may not be back for some time.”

(1/3)
>>
Is this nigger fucking serious? Is he really spamming this?
>>
She smiles, and just as you're about to make for the door she grabs you by the collar of your robes and pulls you in for another kiss. Only after a long several seconds does she release you. “Don't get yourself killed, then. I'll be waiting.” She delivers the last line with a coy grin, before slumping into the sheets of her bed and pulling up the covers. You slip out without another word.

You take a moment to fashion your robes about yourself before slinking out into the hallways. You come upon the sight of two old humans, both grey haired and hobbled by age, playing chess in the central lobby of this floor. They nod briefly in your direction as you ascend the steps to the floor you're staying on. You return the gesture briefly before making your way swiftly to your rooms.

You find your suite of rooms much as you left them, though the coppery scent of blood seems to have seeped into everything. You make your way into the bathroom, where you've stored your various corpses and trophies, as well as the three pelts you still have. You take a moment to draw the moisture from the hides, drying them until you no longer have to worry about rot setting in, then you gather everything up in your arms and focus on your mental image of Mahana.

Nothing happens.

You're crouched there for a solid ten minutes, focusing on the cat spirit and his realm. Trying to get across that you want him to permit you entrance. Just as you sigh in defeat, a soft pop rings in your ears and you find yourself no longer chained within the mortal coil. You, your various prizes, and the bathtub you'd been storing them in have all been transported into the cat's realm. You seem to be lost amongst an endless maze of book shelves, spirits of all shapes and sizes fleeing at the sight of you.
(2/3)
>>
You rise slowly and cautiously, inspecting your surroundings. You've little idea where you are or how you might go about escaping this strange landscape of bookcases towering upwards into the dreary black of the ceiling. You try to recall Mahana's earlier words, regarding traveling through his realm. You need merely focus on a destination and start walking. Eventually, you'll get there.

You channel magic, water weaving itself into existence all around you. With a thought, you direct it towards the cart. You find the task of constructing a make-shift cart from the ceramic tub and ice even easier than it would usually be. It doesn't seem to drain much of your vys, if any at all. You wonder if Mahana is helping you, or if it's merely because you're in the realm of a spirit?

Regardless you've soon fashioned a cart to haul your things and will it forward with Water magic. As you begin to walk forward, picking your way across narrow bridges made of paper and between narrow alleys flanked by bookshelves, you focus your thoughts on the city of El-Amin. It isn't long before you've exited the endless rows of bookshelves and entered instead a wide hallway which runs straight ahead, seemingly without end. It's sort of eerie, there's no horizon. The hall just keeps going, and going. The dull monotony is broken up only occasionally by tall windows revealing nothing save endless white.

You don't know how long you walk. Eventually, upon realizing that maintaining the cart wasn't really draining your reserves, you fashioned a chair at the front and climbed inside. Instead of walking alongside the cart, you ride at the front. You actually manage to get the cart up to a pretty good clip, the stone blocks speeding past you in a blur, but no matter how fast you go you always seem to cross a window at exactly the same time, with little to no variation.
(1/2)
>>
You start to time your journey based on the number of windows you've passed, assuming that each one marks a minute of time passing. Roughly two hundred and forty windows later, you notice that the hallway splits up ahead at a t-intersection. You're not particularly concerned about the split in the hallway itself, it seems like no matter which way you go you'll eventually reach your destination. Rather, it's the arched passage sitting directly in front of the hall which draws your interest.

You slow your cart, sliding out of your chair to briefly inspect the doorway. You're treated to the sight of an amphitheatre
of some sort, at the center of which rest a number of floating silver balls. The largest rest in the center, with the others seeming to orbit around it. They're all contained within the confines of a glowing circle, lines of power running along the floor with an origin point at the center. You think there might be some sort of portal, or perhaps a hole, there in the center. Just below the largest silver orb.

You glance back at your cart briefly before stepping through the arched entryway into the amphitheatre. You glance around, making a quick circle around the outer edge of the room. There are no other doors, but there are windows flanking the circle in the center of the room on either side. Unfortunately, just like all the other windows in the cat's realm, they don't actually seem to look out onto anything.

You step a little closer to the center of the room, and the arrangement of the floating silver balls shifts. The closer you get, the more they align themselves in order from smallest to largest, with the smallest ball pointing directly at your chest. As you step into the stone circle at the bottom of the amphitheatre, the silver orb at the end starts to glow. You keep your distance, and again make a slow circle around the edge. The balls follow you.

You take a few steps back, and the silver ball at the tip stops glowing. The arrangement seems to lose a little coherency, but remains pointed in your general direction. You wonder what it is? Some sort of weapon? Perhaps a tool of some sort? What purpose could the device serve?

You don't think it's a weapon, it wouldn't make sense to place a weapon here in this isolated room, which seems rather completely abandoned. Still, you can't wholly rule it out. Thus, touching it might be a bad idea...

You cup your hands around your mouth and raise your voice, shouting into the vast emptiness of the Cat's realm. “Mahana! Hey, what is this place?” You get no response, so you try again. “Mahana?” Yet still, you get no response. What is he doing, napping? You wonder what this place might correspond to in the real, or rather mortal, world?

You debate tossing a rock or something at the portal in the center, but ultimately decide that until you know more about this place it's probably best to avoid it. You can always return later, merely by focusing on it and walking in any given direction.

With that in mind you make a mental note to ask Mahana about this room next time you see him and make for the exit. The smallest silver orb follows you all the way up to the entrance, only returning to its original position once you've passed through the stone archway. You hadn't really noticed it, but the entire room had seemed charge, the hairs on the back of your neck are standing on end and an odd, uncomfortable tingling sensation seems to run along the surface of your skin.

You ignore it for now, and climb into the seat of your make-shift cart. You turn the modified bathtub full of corpses left, focus your thoughts on the entrance to your estate, and will the cart to move forward. You resume counting the windows as they pass, the minutes ticking past almost painfully slow. You pass sixty, then one hundred twenty. You lose track for a time around three hundred but eventually get back into the swing of things around four hundred twenty.

(1/3)
>>
Eleven hours. Eleven hours of monotony. Eleven hours of trying to keep your thoughts focused on a single place. You now know what Mahana meant by this not being quite as easy as it seems. However, as you enter the eleventh hour of your journey you start to notice that the scenery is changing. The neat, orderly walls are being broken up. Cracks cutting through the walls. At one point you can actually see the sky where a chunk of the wall has floated away. Oddly, it's white rather than red.

You're so busy staring up at the sky that you're taken by surprise when the walls vanish and you find yourself rushing through a shallow canyon, stones protruding from the ground at impossible angles and floating lazily through the air. They're carved into odd shapes, each one having a hole in its center. You start to see other spirits, minor spirits here and there. They take on metallic forms, their bodies long and worm-like.

One such spirit, slightly larger than the rest, slithers up from behind you to coil gently around your arm. It opens its mouth, revealing blunt teeth. The sort you'd expect to find in an oxen or a camel. When it speaks, its Samjan is almost too perfect. It lacks any sort of accent, although in a way the lack of accent is an accent all its own. “Why do you travel through our gardens, mortal? The Great One himself has permitted us use of this place.”

>Shoo him off of you, you've better things to do than listen to the ramblings of spirits.

You don't see any reason not to tell the little guy. He seems mostly harmless. “I'm on my way to the city of El-Amin, which lies within the mortal realm, and my path happened to take me through your gardens. I'm using the 'Great One's' realm as a sort of shortcut. No worries, I've permission to travel through these lands”

The eyeless worm-like spirit pulls itself a little closer to your face. Its metallic flesh is cold against your skin, but the creature doesn't seem hostile. “You must be careful not to leave your chosen path whilst traveling through these lands. Each time you must go left at the fork. Each time you must go right at the crossroads. Never must you falter from these directions, for to do so would be a grave insult. Do as I ask, and you will journey peacefully.”

With that, the spirit vanishes. One minute it's wrapped around your arm, the next it's simply gone. Mahana never mentioned any sort of hazards in his realm. Frankly, you're not sure this worm can be trusted. You wonder if this is just some sort of prank the locals are trying to play on the mortal? Will going left at forks and right at crossroads make you spell out 'penis' or something else childish in the spirit language? Will it get you hopelessly lost?

Regardless, it's not particularly relevant until you reach the first fork in the shallow canyon you're traveling through. The right path continues on in more or less a straight line towards the horizon, while the left path leads you into what appears to be some sort of maze. There's a sharp turn to the left just a few hundred feet further on. You've little idea how long you've been traveling at this point, you've no more readily available markers with which to determine the passage of time.

You decide that it's probably best to just follow the spirit's directions, so you turn left. You proceed about a hundred feet to the turn and just around the bend find yourself at a crossroads, where you go right. This pattern proceeds for quite some time, left at forks and right at crossroads with each one coming right after the other. At one point you hit a stretch of three forks in a row, and at another two crossroads. However, for the most part it's rather predictable.

It's as you're advancing towards yet another crossroads that you feel something shift, an alien consciousness suddenly intruding upon yours. A screech seems to split your skull, one of Ricky's tentacles sliding out of your cloak and wrapping around your waist. The space around his cloak begins to break down, holes appearing in reality where Ricky's mere existence eats away at the fabric of Mahana's realm.

As relieved as you are to know that your cloak has finally managed to repair itself you can't help but grow worried at the increasingly large holes his tentacles is ripping in the fabric of this reality. Ricky seems to sense this, and with a quite skree of protest his tentacle recedes back into your cloak. The holes soon repair themselves, which is a relief, but you feel a little bad for spurning Ricky. You focus on the mental image of him holding you aloft, which elicits a headache inducing screech of what you can presume is joy.

Once the throbbing in your skull subsides you turn your thoughts back to El-Amin and the entrance to your estate. You take a right at one of the crossroads and grind your make-shift cart to a stop at the sight of what you find. You're met with a wall of stone, a dead end. Is this your exit, or did that spirit trick you into traveling down the wrong path?

You close your eyes and focus on exiting the cat's realm, on returning to the mortal coil. There's a rush of air, and a quiet pop. Then you feel the sand shift beneath your feet and a gentle breeze stirs your robes. Your eyes snap open to find that you are not in El-Amin. In fact, you're quite some distance from El-Amin.

Oddly, you seem to be just to the southeast of El-Amin, probably a few miles from the coast. Perhaps your path did not take you directly south, for some reason or another? Regardless, you recognize the stone outcrops which sprout from the dunes surrounding you as the sort that typically grow to the south east. They tend to be inhabited by traditionalist tribes or Bhataki, nomads accustomed to wandering the desert sands.

It's fortunate that you've arrived in the evening. Were this midday, you would be a dead man. Out here a man, if he has not prepared himself with food and water, can die within the space of an hour when the sun is high and shade is sparse. Even those that survive are never the same. They come back with a madness in them, a fire in their veins that can never quite be quenched. At least, that's what you've heard.

The usual methods of traversing this area are sandship, camel, or upon the backs of great lizards which are accustomed to the heat and to journeying across the sands. You have none of those things, but you do have your cloak. You also have your magic. Perhaps, with some time and effort, you could fashion a make-shift sandship from what you have available. You might also seek out a nomad tribe and acquire a mount from them.
(1/2)
>>
Sadly, though you will it to be so, you can't manage to reenter Mahana's realm. Nor does this seem like a particularly useful location to build a shrine. There is little magic here, less ambient vys than usual in fact. You'd guess it's due to the relatively little life to be found in these wastelands.

>Seek out a tribe of natives, after shoving your belongings into your cloak of course.

Advice from our friend's wife, way back in the late 90s of threads back in January.

"Very well. My advice I will give, it is this. Stutter when it is upon sands that you walk. Avoid those lands which are warped and twisted by strange magics, beast within dwell. Ruins you ought not explore. Pestilence is held within. If a band of my people you come upon; water you refuse, a meal you should accept. Upon stone or within caves sleep, on sands or within ruins never linger. To disturb past artifacts is unwise. That is it, my advice to you.”

It only takes like a day to get to Anthus. We can just go back tomorrow.
>>
>>40768950
How? by ship it took a few days, on lands it took two weeks(is that right?) to go from the water temple to El-Amin and the temple is halfway between the two city?
By using fast travel? it took us eleven hours to get somewhere in the desert surrounding El-Amin(thanks to that dick spirit)

Gimme a quick 3d10+8 vs DC 15
Shit outta be easy, but I guess I should make you roll regardless. There is still a slim chance of failure. This is to make a sand ship, by the way. You'll be using it to reach the natives.

Rolled 3, 10, 3 + 8 = 24 (3d10 + 8)

Eh, being honest it's not going to make terribly much difference one way or the other. A Great Success will allow you to get there a bit faster than you otherwise would've, because your ship will be better built. However, some people might prefer to have full vys reserves, rather than get there quickly.

Oh yes, this is also what I was thinking about.
Proper engravings of the Samjan version of the Kama Sutra all throughout the sandship, and a catchy name embossed on the front port side of course. Al-Gasreed II.
