/tg/ - Traditional Games

You are a motorcycle courier, and you live in a strange time. Technology has outrun itself. Data transmission is too advanced to be secure. It's anybody's guess how data is routed through the sprawling system, or how much of it any hub saves. Wireless is even worse - any message could be, and probably is, intercepted by anyone with an antenna, and decrypted by anyone with enough time. Speeding messengers with bags on their backs are the best option in an age where digital information's only security is obscurity. You are the cutting edge, in a world where that means taking approaches that would have been barbarically low-tech fifty years ago.
Things are never boring in your line of work, but they got particularly interesting a few weeks ago.

There's probably something outside the city, but you've never made it that far. The corp sectors are your world - the shining lights of Juptek, the briny damp of Nepcor, the old brick and rusted metal of Vulnex, and the gray dusty concrete of Plutonix.

And the glassed ruins of the Danger Zone, a desert scar in the center of the city, where Kronocorp was cauterized from the face of the earth. Or so you've been told. An almost unheard of co-operative effort by the other four corps.

Usually their conflicts aren't carried out with that level of naked power. They fence with shadows, hiding behind proxies and layer upon layer of false fronts to play their games.

Games that you, like so many others, are merely a piece in. These last few weeks have really brought that home.

>[BEGIN RECAP]

Racing the motorcycle cop through Nepcor sector was pretty standard. Flirting with the muscle at the drop point, a security tough named Ryan, was entertaining. Aside from how tired your client, Dr. Morrison, seemed to be, the transfer wasn't too odd.

Never done a recap thread before, so this'll be a new experience. I'll be doing broad strokes.

Please feel free to ask questions about anything. I don't want anyone being particularly lost.

I do recommend reading the archives, if you can - there's some nuance lost here, and some good thread moments.

The next job, taking a cybernetic arm from a digsite in the Danger Zone to Syfer Systems Research, a single-floor concern in a nondescript Vulnex-sector office building, started off pretty fun. Racing the same Nepcor cop, James, down the highway to the Danger Zone was a blast, even if it took you through a ridiculous amount of security. By the time you made it to the digsite, an Asset had killed your original client and taken the arm.

You left him burning to death, and took the arm (and news of her co-worker's death) to Alice at Syfer Systems. She let you watch as she extracted a small data chip from the arm.

These small, discrete jobs were your bread and butter. Different clients, but mostly the same objective: get the package from Point A to Point B.

Of course, that usually didn't involve roasting an Asset, one of the corps' most valuable agents, killers in suits sent on the most important assignments. And usually augmented to the gills.

So you went to Davey, Vulnex sector's premiere info broker, to find out who you killed, and who was likely to come gunning for you in revenge. Instead of the old man, young found his younger assistant, Paul, and a job: retrieve Davey from an info-gathering mission gone wrong.

That took you into a hidden basement (with far too much medical equipment in it for your taste) under suspiciously empty warehouses, involved a hostile run-in with Nicole Himura, a corp exec's daughter playing at being a merc crew leader, and ended with you pulling Davey out of a pile of dolphin guts and riding off into the sunset.

And back to Paul, who gave you some information on Qui, the Asset you killed, and his organization: Dagon Core, a black-ops/wetwork group within Nepcor, headed by a man named Raynard Eriksson. Then, five minutes later, you eavesdropped on him selling information on you (and the operation in the basement) to Nicole. At least he got a decent price.

Will you be doing anything else aside from this recap? I don't think we'll have enough material for a full thread. May I suggest a short one shot about the kid we saved waking up in his new situation?
>>
>>40743749

You treated yourself to a deliciously greasy meal at Sadie's, a diner popular with Perfcor miners, and got a group of them bragging to you about a sealed vault they'd found underground, in the old city. It's still infested with pockets of the nanoplague down there, and drones go crazy. Then you ran into James, the Nepcor motorcycle cop, just off his shift. Talked motorcycles.

But you'd gotten information, and that's always valuable. So you hit up Thomson, Plutonix sector's info broker - an ex-cop and a drunk. But he had information on Dagon Core, and you had information about a new discovery in the Plutonix subsidiary's mines.

Once he heard it, he had a job for you, set to start in half an hour or so, after he made some phone calls.

You killed time taking a call from Eliza, your oldest friend. She worked with you until around six month ago, when she finally went corp, and EDF Transportation services became a one-woman operation.

Corp life seemed good, although she was a bit preoccupied during the call. Then the trace started - someone was trying to triangulate your position from your phone, using her call.

You tore the battery out of your phone and booked it out of your apartment, dashing into Thomson's op. And what an op it was. Point A was the Perfcor mining site, and the package was a large duffle bag, handed to you by a combat exoskeleton, after it punched its way out of the digsite. A small merc unit provided support, and kept the cops busy as you floored it out of Plutonix sector, with something incredibly important to that megacorp strapped to the back of your bike.

They sent cop cars, motorcycles, and even helicopters after you. The sector swarmed in pursuit. And then you made it over the line into Vulnex's territory, and everything went quiet. No people, no vehicles, a bunch of shuttered windows.

If we don't say anything during the race and can't prove what we did, then we can't get all the juicy contracts that come with the reputation of being willing to deliver anything, anywhere at any cost.

Depends if we can get someone to act as a front broker for us as the bio hazard rider.

I am sure an intel guy would drool to act as one in exchange of keeping our identity hidden. Probo would as well, since its more long term profit for them to help us in such a deal.

So you called Paul, and he said the sector was on biohazard lockdown. Of course, the package came from the contaminated old city diggings, so there was a good chance the lockdown was on your account. And you started to feel a strange piercing sensation.

But there wasn't much time to spare thinking about that, since a Plutonix helicopter dropped an asset on top of you - the urban legend that is the Gardener. He used high-grade electromagnetic augs to chase you through Vulnex sector, smashing through walls in hot pursuit of someone who 'swallowed the seeds'.

By this time, you could feel the nanoplague's carbon shards growing inside you. There was a kid in a narrow alley, but instead of running him over, or stopping, you pulled him onto your bike. If you'd left him there, the Gardener probably would have gotten him. His name was Phillip, and he turned out to be a street rat, and part-time message runner.

And not a bad shot with your SMG.

Phillip managed to wound the Gardener enough to stop him, and the two of you reached the destination intact. Well, mostly. You were dying from the nanoplague, but the package was alright.

And that's what counts, isn't it?

You managed to deliver the package, which involved attaching the data drives in the duffle bag (each coated with nanoplague crystals) to hookups in a cargo container-turned-clean-room, under the direction of a voice that had to be Dr. Morrison. Phillip had to finish it for you, as you were collapsing by this point.

You'd prefer not to remember what happened next. A doctor told you later that it must have been a microwave decon bag, but you didn't know that at the time, and it felt like being burned to death.

There's a blurry recollection of a chorus of rats under the command of the Black Queen, the White Queen and the Red Queen bantering about chess while you lay dying on a table, and other such pleasant things.

Apparently, you were out for something like two weeks, while they deactivated and removed every pocket of the nanoplague and every shard of carbon, during hundreds of hours of marathon microsurgery. It messed up most of your biometric data, with the retinal reconstruction and blood vessel re-routing.

You finally woke up this morning, in Juptek sector, listening to some mechanic sweet-talk your bike. After a bit of misunderstanding, Matthew made you breakfast, and explained that he'd upgraded your bike with a reinforced frame and some stylish red armored fairings.

You figured a couple of things out and called Eliza. The Dagon Core asset you'd killed was her co-worker, and lover. It wasn't a pleasant call for either of you, and led to some tense words with Raynard, her boss.

There were several messages waiting on your phone, but you decided to grab a new set of one-time codes from your bank's nearest branch, and go to lunch with Ryan. There was some difficulty about your biometric ID at the bank, but the teller was friendly.

And the burger joint Ryan had named was wonderful. Unfortunately, lunch was interrupted by your phone, but not before Ryan had let slip that he was one of the mercs who assaulted the mining compound.

The call was simple: find a package that had been ambushed in Nepcor sector, and bring it back to a given building in Juptek, prioritizing fast delivery over package condition.

The package turned out to be a heavily injured blonde Asset, and the ambushers were Eliza, Raynard, and another member of Dagon Core, with a small unit of drones. You managed to get away after escaping some close shaves in Nepcor's old subways, setting a clothesline for Eliza, and cauterizing the Asset's wound with a fragment of a flaming van.

On the way back, you learned that Elanor, the package, was a member of Ishtar Ward, a Juptek group, but not the group you were taking her to. A gurney was waiting for her upon arrival, and they rushed her into surgery.

Thad, the client's representative, had a creepy smile on his face the entire time, and asked you out to dinner, rather awkwardly. Then he began talking some crazy stuff about the package being vivisected for research.

Well, if he was fishing for a reaction, he got one. You started threatening him with your SMG.

His employer, a redheaded corp heir named Reginald, walked in on this, and got on Thad's case about taking his meds. Then he offered to show you what was really going on, if you'd take him as a hostage instead.

You're no doctor, but, once you got a good view, the surgery looked like life-saving to you.

After your curiosity was satisfied, you called Concierge, one of the new contacts on your sleek new phone, and got the address for a discrete doctor. The nondescript garage door nestled away in a tangle of back alleys didn't look like much, and the equipment was spartan, but Doc, a cigar-chomping scarred blonde, seemed like a straight shooter. And her assistant, Luke, wasn't as creepy as Thad, even during his blood-covered first impression.

She assured you that you hadn't been chipped, and explained the medical procedures that had saved your life and emptied your bank account.

Then you got a call from the Red Queen, inviting you to dine with her in a downtown penthouse. The high-class parking garage is probably the most secure place you've left your bike recently.

You were reunited with Phillip in the elevator on the way up. He's wearing a suit now, and working for Nicole. You tried to talk some sense to him, but he wasn't having any of it, and you settled for being gently supportive. And a hug.

Concierge met you at the top, and escorted you to a room where Nicole and Alexis Arnweald, the Red Queen, were finishing their discussion. More chess metaphors, and you self-identified as a knight, if you had to be a piece.

Nicole and Phil left. You showered and picked out something dressy casual from the closet.

Then it was dinner time, although you and Alexis had quite a conversation before the food even thought about arriving.

She pointed out that you perform on a level associated with Assets, rather than normal couriers, even if you're only taking courier jobs. You'd even gotten a rep as the Poor Man's Asset - a way for smaller businesses to deploy someone who could hold their own again a megacorp's Asset.

You didn't take it well. You're not an Asset. You're just a courier who does what a courier should do: get the package from point A to point B.

Of course, most couriers don't go as hard as you go, but that just makes them bad couriers.

Then she offered you the opportunity to work for her, as a personal courier. To work for an employer you can ask "why?" and maybe get an answer someday, instead of working for the shadow of a shadow of shadow, etc.

Or take the rebuilt bike and matching leathers, give back the phone, and go back to freelancing. You're not in debt, after all.

She doesn't need the answer right now, but she needs it soon.

You settle back into the dull leather of the wrap-around bench. It feels much more comfortable with that question cleared from the air.

Although, a small voice seems to say, it's only put off. You're going to have to face it eventually.

But right now, you're facing an incredible smelling spread of food, laid out in covered dishes on the table, surrounding a small vase of lavender. The vase and dishes are elegant in their simplicity, with little ornamentation.

Concierge winks his artificial eye at you as he gently places your plate on the table. If he's mouthing something, you can't tell what it is.

Maybe "good luck"?

You're not quite sure why he'd be saying that to you, so it must be something else. He bows one last time, and exits the room with the empty cart, as Alexis begins serving herself from the dishes.

You begin serving yourself from one of the dishes she isn't using. Taking the top off reveals a mound of creamy mashed potatoes, with a garnish of pepper atop is. You almost feel bad about marring the surface with the serving spoon.

Then the gravy, dark and rich, a condensed essence of the meat offered up as a burnt offering to the diners.

Of course, anyone who offered 'burnt' as an adjective for the roast beef you finally get a chance at, after Alexis has finished carving herself a piece, would be out of their minds. It's been cooked for hours, moist and tender, soaking in flavors from spices whose names you don't even know.

It's a big step up from the budget instant meals you usually eat, you think, glancing up quickly at your hostess. Her hair is liquid ruby in the low, warm light, and her bright blue eyes are sparkling intently at the dish of potatoes. You wonder what she uses to keep her skin so smooth.

It's probably a bit out of your reasonable budget, you think, turning your attention back to the food.

Those delectable smells weren't deceptive advertising. The beef practically melts in your mouth, and the mashed potatoes have body to them, small toothsome chunks enlivening the creaminess.

The two of you honor the food with silence for a while, but soon you reign yourself in - first day with your new stomach, and trying to make a good impression? You shouldn't gorge yourself.

And you may as well take it upon yourself to break the ice.

"So," you begin, flicking your eyes to your hostess, and waiting until she's just taken a drink, "how's your sex life?"

It takes a visible effort - you can see her throat working. But if you hadn't been watching for it, and hadn't tried it right as she was drinking, you probably wouldn't have noticed anything.

She's good.

"Are you working with Nicole?" you ask, almost innocently.

"Alright," she says, a smile spreading across her face, "so those rumors were true too. I was beginning to wonder, actually."

So there are rumors about your sense of humor? Well, it was only a matter of time.

She spears a piece of meat on her sharp fork, and continues, "we're just old friends," she tells you, studying the piece of meat in the air above her plate. "so we do work together on a lot of things. I wasn't actually involved in dreaming up that biohazard stunt, if that's what you're wondering."

"Oh," she continues, finely-drawn eyebrows drifting down, "I'm not fucking her. She's got an entire merc crew to satisfy herself with," she finishes, and sticks the meat in her mouth.

Almost petulantly, you think, watching her chew.

You stare her full in the face for a few second, as she holds the expression, and finally say, "you look a lot like your brother."

"Then I guess I nailed it," she says, breaking into a lopsided smirk, "that's the stupid look Reggie always has when he says someone else's team is better."

"If it's any comfort," you say, "the first time I ran into them, I snatched a package right out from under their noses."

"That was the first time Nikky told me about you," she says, leaning back into the leather cushion, "she was rather impressed. You know, that guy whose hands you ruined wasn't meshing with the team very well, and she was almost glad to have an excuse to get rid of him."

Huh. Almost glad.

Well, Nicole had never struck as the kind of person to be wholly glad about anything.

"I didn't realize I was doing her a favor," you say, raising your glass casually, "and speaking of favors," you take a sip, "I assume you referred your brother to me?"

"Of course," she says, "I didn't have any jobs for you, and figured you'd want to get out on your motorcycle as soon as possible. And I like it when he owes me favors."

"So if you're the heir," you ask, and let the words hang in the air for a moment, "what's his role?"

"Backup," she says, waving her glass nonchalantly, "and diversification. He's not running on Arnweald money, and he's learning a different skillset than I have. He'd be able to take over if something happened to me."

A different skillset, huh?

"Is he leading a merc team," you ask, "like Nicole?"

"It's a little bit like that," she tells you, "but his group isn't in it for the money. There's a lot of infighting in Juptek, and he's trying to come out on top it. So he's wrapped up in research and other things as well."

"Without the Arnwealds truly backing him?" you ask, raising an eyebrow. You've always heard this kind of thing went on, but you've never been in a position to really see it first hand.

"Yes," she says with a sigh, "he's not the heir, so that's his path up. Armies have always been full of second sons, as far back as you go."

"You guys play a different game compared to us pawns," you say, smirking a little, "survival of the fittest at the highest level?"

"Something like that," she tells you, taking another sip from her glass, "I guess the theory is that if you can pick and lead a good combat team, you can pick and lead a good team for anything else."

"I've seen some of Reginald's team," you say, lowering your voice slightly, "and it wasn't the best impression. His pet Asset's a ticking time bomb."

"Oh," she says, eyes narrowing, "Thad. I assume he hadn't taken his meds?"

"That's what your brother told me," you reply, "is that common? He was beyond unstable."

"I'm told he brings something very unique to the table," she says, "and either it drove him crazy, or he can use it because he's crazy. But I haven't gotten all the details on it. I think he's an experimental subject reginald picked up somewhere."

"If I worked for you," you ask, in a hard voice, "would I have to work with him?"

"If you do any more jobs for Reginald, he'll probably be around," she tells you, "but he won't be on anything coming straight from me. What'd he do to tick you off?"

You tell her the story of today's mission, and the direct aftermath.

"So then you walked in," she says, laughing, "holding Reggie at gunpoint? After he offered himself as a hostage? This is too good."

"Are all your jobs going to be like this?" you ask, in between bites.

"I hope not," she says, "if Reggie's inciting Iscariot to a turf war, I'm going to steer well clear. And that's what this looks like to me."

Someone may want to archive early, there was a misarchivist running around a little while ago.

I haven't seen him do it for a week or two.
Which saddens me because his saltiness was so damn funny.

"How bad is it going to get?" you ask, adding another cut of the roast to your plate.

It's there, you may as well eat it.

"Well," she says, "there are a few options. Door number one, Reggie gives her the best medical care and send her back to Ishtar Ward as good as new. Then the ball's in Iscariot's court," she continues, gesturing to one side, "he can take her back and be grateful, and this begins some sort of alliance, or," she goes on, waving her hand to the other side, "he can suspect there's a trick, and mess things up by trying to find the hidden plot that doesn't exist. Door number two, Reggie chips her or something goes wrong in the operation, and, well, you can guess how that turns out," she finishes, smiling wanly at you.

"So even in the best case," you say, cutting up the succulent meat, "there's a good chance it'll make things worse?"

"Yes," Alexis tells you, "and Ishtar Ward is a lot like Dagon Core. And you've met Thad, so you can imagine what a showdown would look like, and why I'd like to stay out of it."

Dagon Core. Ishtar Ward. You guess it's a common naming convention for corp ops groups.

"Well," you say, "I'm glad to hear I'd be staying out of it. What sort of things would I be doing for you?"

"I'm no Pythian," she tells you, "but it'll be mostly courier jobs: point A to point B and all that. Oh, and attending corp parties. And there might be some more interesting things too, because we wouldn't want it to get boring."

That sounds ominous to you.

"Interesting?" you ask, raising an eyebrow.

"Like going undercover in a role, so you're convenient for someone to pass a package to," she says, gesturing idly, "that sort of thing. Hopefully nothing too dangerous, unless you want it."

"And what sort of benefits would I get from signing on with you?"
>>
>>40750834

"Benefits?" she asks, and laughs, "well, you've seen the riding suit and the phone, so you know the kind of stuff I can get my hands on, if I need too. So, resources, And I think you've been subjected to the medical plan already, such as it is. There's also enjoying the high life, and the pay, well, it's good. If you want," she finishes, smiling at you, "there's even a spare room here, and a closet full of clothes."

That's certainly quite the list. But it she just listing a golden cage, bar by bar?

"Would I be a Juptek employee?" you ask. You don't want to go corp yet.

"No," she says, "like I said, you'd be my personal courier. And you'd be free to take other jobs, within reason. I'd have to draw the line at providing services to people currently directly opposing me, of course. But that list is short," she continues with a smile, "and I think it matches up with yours."

This isn't sounding too bad, but you're still not sure about it.

"And if I refuse?" you ask, idly.

"Well," she says, "you'd have to give the phone back, but the bike was yours to begin with, just rebuilt, and the riding suit was special tailored for you, so you may as well keep it too. And after that job earlier today, you should have enough money to find a decent place."

More than enough, definitely.

Or maybe her definition of 'decent' is a couple notches above your own.

give me a couple days to decide, I only just woke back up today and I'm getting used to living again, but so far, your offer is very very appealing
>>
>>40750851
>Would I have to get any augmentations?
>>
I mean, all things considered, this seems like a pretty decent offer. We get paid to do what we like, can still offer our services to the "low end" people who want high-end service, and it gives us a sort of backway route to corp tech, which we know is better than the things we normally get access to.

The whole 'going undercover to deliver/receive a package' is the part I'm most concerned with, as I'm pretty sure it'll eventually put us in a situation where the "core" of Laura will get conflicted with what the cover identity is and the mask we need to maintain.

Personally, I think we should accept her offer, on the condition that if things start to get too tense we can part amicably and give back whatever tech (like the phone) we've gotten that's higher grade than what a normal person could have bought.

>as I'm pretty sure it'll eventually put us in a situation where the "core" of Laura will get conflicted with what the cover identity is and the mask we need to maintain.
I doubt she means for us to go deep long term undercover, just undercover enough to be slipped a drive or something

though its still concerning because its outside of our wheelhouse

conditions like being able to back out on amicable terms is a must, and I still think we should take at least 2 days off before doing any more work or making a decision, we've got to get our life back in order
>>
>>40750851
I'd vote no, but then again I'm tired and need to go to bed.

GREAT TO HAVE YOU BACK HD, YOU AND THIS QUEST ARE ACES! GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD MORNING YOU WONDERFUL BASTARD!
>>
>>40751006
Yes, I agree in that we should get at least a day to think it over, probably while we find a new place and move into it.

Also, I don't remember or not, but was Laura interested in doing/competing in the city race that's coming up? If memory serves there was mild interest in us competing in it, but we were worried that it'd just boil down to corp riders vs. corp riders stuff.
>>
>>40751109
yeah we had some interest in it, but we didn't want to get involved in the corp stuff, maybe just keep Eliza out of trouble during it and such
>>
>META POST

I think I'm calling it here tonight. I've got to get up tomorrow.

It's good to be back, and hopefully I'll be able to run again tomorrow, if work doesn't completely drain me.

In other news, captcha has been eating my lunch.

Nah. I think it's pretty clear nobody's going to go for that.

And I'm happy about that.

I think we should sign up with Eliza, but first we should see an info broker and get some info on her before we seal the deal.

>>40751183
thanks for the thread HD

regarding augs, the only ones I'd go for would be interfacing with our bike and maybe an eye to help with shooting while riding
>>
>>40751347
Why would we need an auged eye when we can kidnap children?

No augs. We stay human.

It's a matter of principle. We've avoided all augs like the plauge so far.

>>40754334
>>40754350
well played, anons, well played

but yeah, i'd say avoid augs unless we really need them (like if we lost a few limbs or something)
