Second Verse, Part 12

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1135

New Year's Day

You are Wilhelm, Lord of Ramla, and you are about to bid farewell to your lover, Queen Melisende and her entourage. She wears a tight cut dress with fur lined dress over it, the tufts of fur that came from the hem at her shoulder and neck-line ruffled in the chill of the winter wind. She wore her hair tight under the raised hood of her mantle. Other than that she wore a smile for you, who had given her a joyous Christmas and a gift that would in months cause her belly to swell. Outside the gates of Ramla she sat upon a horse, held reins light in her hand. Men-at-arms on foot and ahorse waited for her, commanded by Sir Marcel who sat a heavy warhorse and wore thick coated maille. He seemed keen to be on the road. Princess Hodierna sat a fine grey beast, well clothed against the cold. She was as lovely as the queen, with broader features none the less cast in that same honey-golden of hair and skin.

To Princess Hodierna, who waited with her sister the Queen, you had given a letter to be delivered to your betrothed Ioveta in the City. Ioveta's own letter you kept in a pouch beneath your doublet, close to your heart.

The walls of Ramla had been fixed over the winter. Hard working sealing up the walls that had been devastated in years past by the tremors that would on occasion seize the Levant. The same earthquake that had shaken Ramla near apart had devestated many other towns and cities. Gaza itself lay in ruins to the south of Ascalon, near completely abandoned save as way station to travelers to and from Egypt.
>>
The Queen offered you her hand and you kissed it, touching silk gloves with your lips.

When she drew it back she drew up in the saddle, a stray lock of gold hair whipping across her refined features.

"Shall there be parting words between us?" she asked, voice merry and sweet. She teased your status as secret lover before her trusted cortierie. Hodierna raised a brow at the tone in her sister's voice, a slight smile upon her lips as she looked between you.

Opposite the train with the Queen were your own companions. Your squire Hugo, the knight Sir Etienne and his own common born squire. Sir Orlando and your uncle Sir Hermann. Solomon on his black destrier. And dark skinned lancer Sabeen, who sat under arms with her own men on horseback. Some were there for reasons of station, you did not trust not like your Uncle but could not refuse his attendance. Otherwise the rest stood upon the fixed wall, soldiers and peasants, watching the queen depart. You saw Maggie and Etain upon it with the Arab Mohmed, readying ribbon to fly when the queen should depart in full.

She waits for your answer with inviting smile, the beast under her tromping the dirt to be off

She is enjoying this so much
>>

Oh i have no doubt people are already thinking and gossiping. But really, that would had happened regardless whatever or not anything did happen.
>>

then we should quash it to baseless rumors by betrothing ourselves to Iovetta.

I'm wondering though if Hugh gets desperate enough he might accuse us of having an affair
>>
"Safe roads to you, your majesty," you said with a slight bow.

Her smile slipped a fraction, to look almost as if she would say something, but it was for only a second and instead her smile returned.

"My thanks, Lord Ramla, for a pleasant Christmas," she turned upon her horse and started away, soon joined by Sir Raymond and Father Marian.

Hodierna tarried a moment. "Your letter shall be safely delivered," she said, "It will cheer her heart. Ioveta has been in stormy moods since last she had seen you. Be safe, Lord Wilhelm."

You smiled for her and inclined your head. "And you as well Princess Hodierna."

She spurred away to catch her sister, and as she went the troops began to march, joined by the cheer of the watching crowd. Ribbons were waved for the queen, he had been a popular guest. Her men had distributed bread and coin upon her arrival and again on her departure. Though few in your walls were of the true faith, they had a growing love for their monarch.

Once the cheering settled and the crowd began to part, Sabeen came up to your shoulder.

"We'll be off as well," she said, "Back to Jaffa. I'm sorry to tell you so late."

Your head turned with surprise and you considered the woman. Sabeen looked after the diminishing royal train with a look of amusement in her eyes. She had not been brought entirely into the Queen's trust, but you had found them sharing a conversation in the gardens more than once. You think they might be alike in some respects, and had recognised each other as close to equals. Melisende had requested Sabeen be present when she departed.

"Your father?" you asked. Or had you or one of your men done something to cause her offence?

Sabeen smiled. A nod. She was a loyal daughter, and must miss him dearly.

"Safe road to you Sabeen," you said, offering her your hand, "Give my regards to your father and count Hugh."

She grinned and took it. "'Til next we meet, Wil, god keep you" she said. And then she looked past you, her grin fading to a smile as she released your grip. You looked back to Hugo. He was very still upon his horse. "And you as well Hugo," she said, offering him her hand.

Hugo only looked at her for a long moment. Stared even, face gone pale. Finally he gave a slight nod and rode away, back into the town.

Sabeen drew back her hand and looked after the boy.

"Well," she said, pulling a the collar of her chain shirt, "We are off."

Your friends gave their farewells, some shouting from the walls and waving frantically as they saw her depart. Solomon gave a great booming laugh as he waved her goodbye. "May we never cross swords!" he called after her, "It would be a shame to kill such a fine friend, Muslim though she be!"

"You as well Nubian!" she said, waving to the big man from behind as her horse fell into a light gallop.

You waited and watched her depart. You would miss her, but were secure in knowing you would meet again. You only hoped it would not be on opposite sides at the gates of Ascalon. Her fellow lancers rode at her flanks, horses quick under flying hooves. The Syrian lancers curved away in the opposite direction of the Queen's company, headed for coastal Jaffa.

You turn your horse and return within. Though you missed them both dearly and for different reasons, you still had work at hand.

"Well to be rid of her and the rest of her ilk, unnatural creature bearing arms and a Muslim to boot," Sir Hermann said to Orlando. They had been much in one another's company. "Fetching as she was. Hmm. I guess the Saracen had one thing in her credit. I'd enjoy a night between those thighs."

>>
"Not wrong on that last bit Sir Hermann," Orlando said, "But be sure to watch your words, Lady Sabeen is well liked and I personally will miss her." Sir Hermann blanched at that and you chuckled.

The other knights kept away from Hermann's company for the ride back to the tower. You couldn't blame them. You looked for Hugo in the garden and found him missing, though Father Desmond, Mathilde and Lady Rosalie awaited your return, as well as the other ladies of your court.

When Solomon dismounted his wife was fast in his arms, pulling kisses from his lips. Wed a day, you might need to give Solomon a week or so to properly enjoy his newly wed status.

"Messages await you in your chamber," Rosalie said with a bow.

Desmond helped take your horse as you dismounted.

"I thought we might have lunch together," Mathilde said, presenting herself before you in a freshly made dress. She had been working on it long this winter with Maggie and Etain. It fit her well, she had a hand for needle craft.

You all seem worried about this so I'll step in. Sabeen's attraction to Wilhelm was purely physical. Was, because she dropped it after he dropped her proposal. She only considers him a good friend now, and is frankly relieved she never slept with him and embarrassed that she even tried.

Talk to her about how she has been good lately and has done has she has been told. Let her study a bit about military matters, she might one day have to defend her husband's castle and let her do some sparring so she know a bit of self defense.

Pointless, but command is a useful ability. Plenty of noblewomen have held castles by being stubborn as hell and inspiring their men at arms.

well funs over back to work.

I second the sentiment about training our sister, the holy land is a dangerous place so she should at least know how to protect herself.

You sighed. "That sounds like just the thing I need," you say, taking your sister by the arm. It would be a pleasant distraction from the partings and the workload ahead of you. She grinned ear to ear and led you into the castle tower.

From there she took you up into her chambers. The tower was fast becoming crowded, but you had found her rooms to suit her station. It was a cosy little bedroom with antechamber for guests. She showed you to a chair for the waiting table. Very well mannered your sister, and perhaps keen to impress you after so little time spent together.

Water she fetched from a pitcher and poured you both a glass, and she summoned a servant to fetch your lunch.

"Oh this Christmas was wonderful!" she said as she came to take her own seat, "Queen Melisende is amazing. Every bit a queen, and so beautiful! I remember when we met the Queen of Germany and she was ever so disappointing. Ugly and dull, but Melisende!"

"She's a fine woman," you said, not wishing for your sister to carry on about your lover. You would miss her, her charm and her body both.

Mathilde drank, thirst from her rushed talk, and set the cup down. "Oh but Sir Raymond was so funny. To think he will be a lord one day. Such a different mark from of the fat lords back home. Funny, handsome, oh my gosh!" She blushed and buried her face in her hands.

Oh? Your sister had a crush. You supposed Sir Raymond was an upright man worthy of her, but his sights were set on royal targets.

"How are you finding it all?" you asked, "Do you miss home?"

Mathilde snorted, rolled her eyes. "Oh Wil," and batted your arm. You took that as a firm 'no'.
>>
She looked to the wall smiling. "I hope Lady Sabeen is not gone for long. She really is delightful. Watching her practice against men near half as big as her..." Mathilde gave a delighted shiver, smile growing. You hoped she did not entertain fantasies of emulating Sabeen.

Lunch was brought. Chicken well spiced. Mathilde ate delicately and you did much to match her, though your hunger pinched your gut and wished for you to forgo manners. You must set an example. Mathilde looked up at you with a mouthful of chicken and gave you a dimpled smile that brought out a smile of your own. She did not talk as much while eating. When she did she set her knife aside and smoothed crumbs from her mouth.

"Thank you for letting me live with you," she said, and reached for your hand, "I love it here ever so much. The company, the people, it seems a dream's length away from Germany."

You laughed. Ramla was frightfully dull, and her opinion might change after a season. "I'm glad you're here," you said, "As is everyone else. You've really livened the place up."

Mathilde had a pretty blush. "Well," she said, "Until you have a wife, I guess I am the lady of the house." She spoke with such authority it brought a laugh to your lips. A girl of thirteen and she thought herself already the equal to the highest born women.

It was mentioned we should probably give them a week off to enjoy their honeymoon. Sir Etienne can take over Solomon's duties intill he returns.
>>
>>40735065

>>
>>40735075
Yeah, but at the moment they're both the randiest buggers in this castle. Plus, if Solomon has a taste for his wife's potato, he might stray less.

What happened to Sir Jew again?
>>
>>40735105
He is the background and please. Our sister is a teenage girl. She is gonna have plenty of crushes.
>>
You couldn't help but laugh.

"Not so fast there dear sister," you said, and Mathilde's smile vanished and face reddened, near hiding her freckles under a curtain of scarlet. "You are only a girl," you said, "And I've other women to see to the household. Lady Rosalie for one, Chihirizahd for another."

The name of your slave drew a furious scowl from Mathilde. "You mean your whore," she said with great hotness, little hand curling into a fist, "I am beneath your whore, is that what you mean to say?" She rose from her chair and leaned across the table, nose wrinkling. She looked a cte thing even gripped by fury, it was hard to take altogether seriously. Still, her anger struck a point.

"Easy Matty," you said, offering her the pet name to get her fury under control. She slowly dropped back into her seat.

She had an angry pout. It was luck she was your sister, for another man might be weakened by such a sight.

"You are only a girl. A very capable girl, but still just a girl," you said, "If you want to take on some responsibilities for the house I can arrange it, but you'll be ruling no roost until you have a husband of your own. A good one, chosen by myself or father."

She stomped her fot and sniffed. "Well for you to tell me what to do. You never allowed father command of your life."

You sighed, rubbed your forehead. "And what do you want to do Mathilde?" you asked.

She eyed you up and down with great suspicion, blue eyes gleaming under those long black lashes. She crossed her arms.

"I want to learn how to sword fight. More than just girl's exercise. The real thing. And I want to have a few handmaids of my own. Maggie, for one. And some more books to read from your library. Real things to learn, not just stories." She flipped back her loose hair, over her shoulder in a haughty manner.

You leaned back. She had no leverage, you could deny her everything if you wished, but you knew she had a way of causing trouble if she did not get her wish.
>>
You mulled them over with consideration. Perhaps at least a few offerings, to keep the peace. Or would it really hurt to give her all she asked? It was not much.

>>
>>40735170

>>
You tapped your fingers and then sighed, offering her the palm of your hand.

"Very well," you said, "But do not think it will be easy. I will be watching your studies closely, and Solomon will instruct you in swordcraft. He won't go lightly on you. As to the handmaids, if it does not restrict Maggie's vows she may keep your company and remain under your authority. Other companions we can find in time. Perhaps Xenophanes has a daughter you can bully."

Mathilde leapt across the table, wrapping her arms around your shoulders and pushing against your chest.

"Oh thank you! Thank you, thank you!" she kissed your stubble covered chin.

"Peace!" you pried her off with a laugh.

Mathilde came untangled, still beaming for you, when a knock came upon the door.

"Your lordship?" it was Rosalie, and the woman wore a glum expression. All day she had seem morose. "I thought we could see to those messages now." She had one in hand.

You rose from your chair and walked with Rosalie to your study. The woman seemed a tad anxious, but you thought it unlikely to be over a message or she would have told you already. She had been much in Hodierna's company while the princess had been here, and before then her time had been taken with Etain. Bereft of a friend and her lover, you figured she was just feeling the pangs of loneliness. You could sympathize.

Still, you would have to arrange something should it begin to impact her work. Perhaps loan her Chihirizahd to act as assistant.

When you entered your study you saw Chihirizahd sitting there already, reading one of the letters directed to you. She offered it to you with a smile. "From some realm called 'Trier'," she said.

You scooted her off your seat and took it. She then took your lap, her fingers playing with your hair, the others your scruffy beginning of a beard.

"Beards, hmph, better a good jawline," she said, not caring that Rosalie watched as she kissed your ear.

You fended her off a little to check the letter. It was indeed from the office of the bishop. It said that he would arrive after winter has broken, some time in April. It said he would be accompanied by 'soldiers and noblemen of the realm'. It sent a thrill down your neck. In your youth the bishop had been the prime authority of your life. Your father's master. And now he would be visiting you.

Of course. It was in his curt hand. You fold it up and set it aside. And then fill your hands with something more pleasant. Chihirizahd giggled. It had been too long since you last attended her needs. You thought her eyes might have strayed at one point, at the feast she had danced with Sir Etienne. If anything had come for it, you had no way of knowing.

But she seemed keen for your attention. You sent Rosalie away, and bent Chihirizahd over the desk, sprawling her out upon the papers...

You are Mathilde of Koblenz.

Two days had passed since your brother Lord Wilhelm had agreed to your demands.

You ere feeling a bright glee as you considered the sword in your hands. It was for single hand combat, and it fit your hand well. The scabbard was wood covered in a red leather. You drew the steel forth with a slight thrill. This wasn't just a sword. It was your sword. With it came a shield, painted upon it a black eagle. You had chosen it specifically from your brother's armoury. The eagle was the symbol of Rome, and this one spoke of Germany.

It also matched the colour of your hair, and was far prettier to the plain faced designs of the other options.

It had belonged to a man now dead, a Sir Welf. Maggie had never met him, or so she said when the soldier handed it to you.

"Neither did I," Tancred the soldier said, "But he was counted a good friend by both your brothers. We saw him buried in Jerusalem itself."

You held it up. "Then I shall carry it with honour," you said, and then handed it to Maggie.

The Irish lass followed you to the courtyard. She carried not only your shield, but helm and maile as well. It was a load, but the broad girl managed it.You kept your sword tucked under one arm. It was your pleasure and the remarkability of all the household that your brother had agreed to this. 'A farce' some said behind their hands. Well, you would show them in time.

In the courtyard there was a few boys gathered. Young men-at-arms and a few squires. You saw the son of your father's whore watching with a sun darkened peasant. He seemed unhappy. Everyone else had gathered to see what you were made of, and whether or not you would get trounced.
>>
Sir Solomon, tall and noble, waited. You had not seen Etain since the day before and wondered who he was treating her. The girl was strange, but she was your friend. You hoped he was treating her well. Who knew what Nubian custom had between husband and wife? Still, what you had seen of her had been of beaming smiles. Perhaps they would soon try for a baby.

You yourself had never done...'that'. And if you should it would not be with a man such as Solomon. He was not an ugly sort, but you did not find him fair to look upon either.

"Oh, but I hope ye do well Mathilde," Maggie said as you set by a bench. She put out your armour.

You held out your arms. "Help me into it would you?" you said. She was very much like our own squire, fitting you into the chain shirt. It fell down upon your shoulders with a great weight. 'Oof!' a breath came out of you. The helm you put on and it near covered your eyes.

The boys laughed and Solomon looked irritated. That resolved your feelings. You must do your very best, and put the boys to shame.

Maggie strapped on your shield and you drew your sword from her hands. You modeled it a little for Maggie, who gave you an encouraging grin. Then you walked to meet Solomon. The man towered over you, a storm head, glowering.

"Are you ready?" he asked.

You nod. Solomon raises his blade. You hold forth your own.

Just pick a stance (aggressive/defensive/balanced) and roll 3d100 for the result.

I just recall a few complaints about the old system. I'm happy to stick with it though.
>>
>>40735694
Personally i prefer the old one due to being a bit more interactive.

Old system for duels at least, I guess in a larger battle or skirmish the new system may be better at least in terms of RP

Fuck... how do you think mother and father are going to react when they see Mathilde is already here and not in Worms ?
>>
>>40735862
Hey, that's her fault. Not ours. Nothing to do with us.
>>
You strike out with your sword, a great lunge with all your weight behind it. To your surprise it knocks aside Solomon's sword. For a second you think you have an opening and your heart swells in your chest.

Then he turns your blade away and comes over it in a thrust. It hits you above the heart and knocks you back a step. You bring up your shield to ward his next blow, but he closes on you and grabs it. He knocks aside your sword and twists the shield aside. You fell with a painful gasp, chain rattling and sword lost from your fingers as your arse bounced on the hard dirt floor.

He stood over you with sword point poised above your eye. You choked back something, feeling a hot pricking in your eyes.

The boys laugh and cheer, slapping each other on the back. Solomon did not laugh. He simply withdrew his sword and walked away.

"You should put aside the sword, it is not for you," he said, sheathing his sword, "Live as a woman is meant to live. Find some warrior and warm his cock."

You threw your shield at him as you picked yourself out of the dirt. It hit him in the back of the leg, buckling it so that he fell to one knee.

The cheering died in a hush. Wide-eyes watched as Solomon turned.

"Are you sure you meant to do that?" he asked.

"My hand didn't slip, sir," you said, holding forth your sword again.

Solomon stared at you until his mouth broke into a dazzling white grin, eyes bright.

"Good," he said, and kicked over to you your shield.

You picked it up, set it against your sword hand as you had seen a knight do in the past.

He merely begins to walk, freeing blade from scabbard, still grinning.

You raised your shield against a pair of sword blows. The strength of his blows near sent you dancing back, but you grit your teeth and held your ground. The man was so large, so much larger and stronger than you, that it was only through willpower that you kept your feet. When you dropped your shield you cast a thrust toward him near blindly, hoping against hope to land a blow.

You felt steel meet steel in a loud clash, rattling up your arm as the near liquid effect of the blades meeting for the first time swam up your muscle and bones.

For a second though you looked like you might place your thrust, but it ended with Solomon's sword point again above your heart.

He outreached you. Your aims were identical, but his size but him far beyond your lightest touch.

Still it was clear, your blade might have touched him. And that was enough for you.

Solomon's grin had not fallen.

"Much better," he said, lowering his sword. "Much better!" He tapped the side of your helm with the flat of his blade.

"Come tomorrow, and every morning since at first dawn. We will teach you," he said, sheathing his sword. He bowed to you as your lord's sister, and then walked away.

You gave a tired puff. The crowd of boys was departing, annoyed that you had not suffered a second embarrassment. Muttering to each other unhappily. You were happy that they were so unhappy.

Maggie crossed the yard and gave you a most unladylike punch in the arm. "That could have gone worse," she said, "Might've been he'd put you on his knee for a spanking. Though, in private I wouldn't mind that so much." You blushed at that. Maggie often jested in such a way.

It surprised you to see Hugo approach. Maggie's chest rose for the sight of him, her bearing more becoming of a woman. You long suspected she harboured a crush on him. It was amusing more than anything else. You hoped she'd set sights for a more worthy target in time, but for now it was cute.

He has relaxed a bit. But during the whole Jerusalem Arc he had just hit puberty and a lot of shit had been going down. Shown some hints of it during our visit to Sidon. But really, its just Puberty.
>>
The son of your father's whore looked from the shield you carried, to you.

"Did you want something?" you asked.

His eyes were hooded and he chewed on his tongue. A disgusting habit of his that you'd tried to break in years past.

He put out a fist, and wrapped the dome of your helm. He was taller than you now, by half a foot, which annoyed you greatly.

"You did alright," he said.

You felt a tightness in your chest and a most unwelcome flush in your face.

"Thank you," you said, "Thank you for saying so, Hugo."

Hugo drew back almost as if you had said something nasty, his face grown bright red. Your eyes turned sly to see him so flat-footed.

"Well, if this 'sir knight' thinks me so naturally skillful with the blade surely I must continue to study hard," you said, "And before long be his superior in the arts, and instruct him."

"I said you did alright," Hugo spluttered, "Do not force words into my mouth!"

You suppressed a giggle, as did Maggie.

"Do not worry boy," you said, "I shall not be a tyrant and lord my superiority over you, but help usher your own skills forward so you might better be of service to my lord brother."

Maggie was near bent over for trying to keep from chuckling.

Hugo drew away. "Whatever!" he threw up his hands as he walked away, "Teach me a lesson for being nice!"

"Sir Knight, do not take offence!" you called after him, "I only wish to see you improve!"

You heard his frustrated bark as he rounded the corner, away from eye shot. For a moment you feel a pang of regret for your teasing, the giggle dying on your lips.

Maggie fell upon your shoulder laughing. "Why are you so mean to him?" she spoke through her fit of the giggles, "He's a sweet lad."

You bit your lip. What answer was there for that? You saw his face in your mind and saw your father. And you saw his mother. The gold haired beauty, spied through a door crack, moaning in your mother's bed with your father atop her. You heard her in your heart and felt cold iron fill it.

"He is a whore's son," you said, "I just do not want him to forget that."
>>
You sheathed your sword and undressed the heavy maile. It would be kept in your room, to be brought out every morning. Maggie helped you carry it.

You looked to your friend. She had been some great comfort in your short time together. Ever ready with a jest. Too much of your days had been spent around men and boys, swearing, fighting, all kinds of idiocy. If Etain were free they might cause real mischief. She wished she had not needed to marry Sir Solomon. It had robbed her days of some fun.

"I'll be off," Maggie said at your door, "Mohmed's father is teaching me Arabic. It's good fun."

Oh yes, her Saracen lessons. You waved her farewell with a heart string pluck, standing alone in your doorway.

You looked to your room and thought of your sister Giselle. She was only eight years of age, an awful snot of a child, but you felt an awful urge to braid her hair. One of your brother's borrowed books sat on your table. It seemed a lonely task, reading, though you had found pleasure in it in the past.

You sit and unfold the book. 'Canon of Medicine' it was called, it was much about health and sickness. You were not sure if you fully understood it all. It was a far cry from the tales of knights and ladies you had read in the past. In truth it was a struggle, but you had told your brother you would make every effort to be a good student in this.

Perhaps the old Arab could illuminate passages you did not understand. You would have to ask him in the future, and made sure to remember the passages as they came to you.

None had ever questioned your memory. It was considered above common at least. Though all compliments had come with 'for a girl-child' or 'a woman'. Which rankled at times, but she did not let it plague her. Men were naturally superior in matters of mind and intellect, or so they said. She supposed it must be a little true. For her brother to come with nothing and end up with all this, and for men in general to make kingdoms and Empires.

Still, she thought of Queen Melisende. She had mastered such men. And Lady Hildegard commanded the attention of popes and scholars. Perhaps at least some women were equal in thinking. Uncommon women.

Was she an uncommon woman? The thought had so distracted her she was forced to reread a passage.

It would not matter, she supposed. In the end she was only worth the man she would marry, her value found in her maidenhead. All the reading and sword lessons in the world would not change that.

She closed the book and tried hard not to cry.

There was a knock on the door.

You sniff back your tears and pinch at your cheeks before standing. You dab what water had fallen away and took a deep breath, adjusting your clothes. You took a deep breath, and wore a smile.

'A smile is your armour' your mother had said.

Once you were ready you opened the door. It was early evening now. You could not say who might be at your door. Most would be consumed with duties or in the feast hall.

"May I help you?" you asked.

It was your uncle, and he had been drinking. He wore a smile too.

The corridor was empty.

"Matty," you could smell the liquor on his breath, and felt an uncomfortable prickle under your skin.

He was looking at you. Looking at you in a way men should not look at young ladies.

"Uncle," you managed.

A finger brushed your chin, his yellowed teeth showing.

"Have I ever told you how lovely you've grown?" he asked, leaning on the doorway.

His eyes were on your chest. You placed a hand upon it. "It is nice of you to say so, Uncle," you said, stressing the last word.

"When was the last time I dangled you on my knee?" he asked, running his fingers through your hair.

You felt your throat close, and a terrible feeling build in your chest.

You had long noticed your uncle's eyes on you during your journey. You had long mistaken it for something paternal. He had never once touched you, but he touched you now. His hands on your shoulder, his mouth inching towards yours.

You had never been kissed before.

"So lovely," he said, wine breath running up your nose.

A loud, deliberate cough.

Hermann's hands were off you and he was stepping away.

"A lovely young woman," he said, still smiling. He turned and you saw Chihirizahd there, a smile of her own upon her face. "My lady," he said, dipping your brother's whore a bow. He walked away very quickly, eyes darting about and whistling a tune.

You slumped upon the door frame. The fear unwinding through you in a great shiver.

He had near taken a kiss from you. You couldn't think of what else he might have taken.

The whore had a smile for you, her hand came to your arm. "You are well?" she asked.

You brushed the hand off and nodded, straightening. The whore did not look convinced, and carefully put a finger to your cheek, pushing a loose strand of hair back behind your ear.

"Women must guard one another," she said, "The world is unkind to us."

You took a swallow, freeing the lump in your throat.

"Thank you," you said.

Chihirizahd smiled. It was a warm thing.

"Would you like some company?" she asked, leaving unspoken the 'lest he return'.

I'm mainly against having Maggie as her servant to push around, we know her nature, and the entitlement complex she has. This was all after we kill a man and threaten another just to protect her and her friend from being married off, even tho they had every right (for the time period) and that we make her our sisters buttmonkey. It seems just out of place to say the least.

Even a bitch has friends. Right now i am picturing Mathilde flanked by Etain and Maggie walking down the hallway of some highschool looking so above it all.
>>
"Yes, of course," you said, standing away so that she might enter. You could not rightly refuse her after she had rescued you. Had she rescued you? Perhaps you had misjudged your uncle's intentions. Either way, it would be rude to turn away your brother's...friend. You gave her that small generosity.

Chihirizahd entered and you felt a pang of jealousy. She moved such like a woman, graceful and slinking, her body seemingly made by design to please the eye. Her dark hair fell in graceful curls around her shoulders and down her back, skin both warm and soft. She went to take a seat, but merely stood, and instead invited you to sit first with a turn of her head.

You did so, and she slid into the sea opposite you. Fingers found the book you had been reading and she turned it around to her.

"Avicenna," she said, "I read this over the last month. How are you finding it?"

You wrinkled your nose. "Difficult," you admitted.

Chihirizahd nodded. "Well, it is an imperfect translation. Ibn Sina is better read in the original Arabic, and this is only one volume in five."

Arabic? You had thought it Greek in origin. Chihirizahd opened the book to watch the pages flutter, and then shut it again, never once blinking.

"He did nearly one hundred years ago, yet still no one has matched him," Chihirizahd said, sliding the book back over to you, "Or so a Persian master told me. He liked to delight me with his knowledge before taking me. I am not sure what age I was. Perhaps nine or ten. I remembered it though. Every word. I never forget. A rare talent. Another thing that master told me." Her words were tinged with melancholy.

She looked to you now, her smile gone. "But what am I for such talents?" she asked, "It is alright, you can say it."

"A whore," you said, chest squeezed tight.

Chihirizahd's smile returned, and she nodded.

>>
You took her hands, held them.

"My name is not Chihirizahd," she said, "That name was given to me by my slavers. Taken from a story. A pretty name for a pretty thing. My name is Viyan. Viyan of the Valley. That is my name." Her smile was warm, as were her eyes even as they watered.

"I like that name," you said, "More than the other."

"That name is my armour," Viyan said, "It lets me be the creature I must be. Chihirizahd the pleasure girl. The woman of the soft sighs. Do you understand?" Her shoulders trembled. You looked at her unarmoured, that liquid sexuality gone and a frightened girl only a few years older than you sitting there.

"I think so," you said, feeling a tremble in your own chest.

"They sold me. Again and again. I remember them all. Every man since they first took me from my home. I remember being Viyan even as they made me Chihirizahd."

A tear fell down Viyan's cheek, and she let it fall. Instead she reached up to you, and touched your own, wiped away your own tears.

You had no words to comfort her. You could not even understand what they had done to her. Yet she pulled you to her as you cried. It was unfair. It was wrong. She shouldn't be comforting you. It wasn't right. What was done to her wasn't right. That men like that should exist.

You cried against her chest as she stroked your hair.

Viyan sung a soft tune. One of Wilhelm's songs.

She turned your face to hers. She was not a whore, just a girl. Just like you. Who had experienced something truly awful. Who had been hurt. Hurt by someone you were meant to trust.

"Child," Viyan stroked your hair, "Child, your brothers love you. You're so lucky to have them."

You couldn't keep from sobbing. You felt so selfish, crying over something so trivial. You felt like such a little girl.

"I'm sorry," you said through red eyes streaming with tears.

"Hush," she pulled you into her, so snuggly, rocked you gently, "All will be right."

You are Hugo of Ramla, squire to Lord Wilhelm.

And you had just woken from a dream, a dream of beautiful women that required you to rise and 'release' yourself if you hoped to get even another moment's rest. Who was it you thought of? Maggie, Sabeen oiled for wrestling, Lady Chihirizahd or Etain, the Queen (whose moans you still recalled through your brother's doorway and did much to ignore). Maybe all at once, as a boy's imagination takes him.

You released with a sigh and lean your head on the cold stone wall.

It was dark, nothing else stirred. Grey pre-dawn was approaching. And though you had hoped your action would allow you to return to sleep you lay restless on your cot, turning this way and that outside your brother's door.

You stared up at the ceiling until dawn came. Your brother would be in bed a while longer. He had been up late enjoying Chihirizahd, with only you to hear in uncomfortable detail. Often overlooked in their rush to love making. But you couldn't lie any longer. You got up and dressed for the day, belted sword and made your bed.

You laid out your brother's clothes for the day. He was still meant to get another squire, one would be arriving soon you were told. Reeve Xenophanes' son, entirely common born. A gesture to the people of Ramla.

Once you were done with that you went to get your breakfast. Pottage cooked fresh, the kitchens starting even earlier than you. The cook gave you a generous portion, offering you a smile through the folds of her plump face.

You took it to a table and ate. Food was fuel for you, you had no real drive to eat for the sake of eating. It helped clear your head from the fog of sleep.

Once your bowl was empty you saw Jacques slump into the room. The boy fetched food and ate in a rough silence. He had been drinking again. If he kept this way his master would start beating him. Sir Etienne had struck Jacques more than once in the past. A hard man trying to iron out a wild boy.
>>
"What's for the day?" you asked.

"Fetchin' and carryin' for sir," Jacques said around a mouthful. Your own master was not so strict. Wilhelm did not mind if you took an hour for yourself here and there, so long as you did your duty.

Other men-at-arms came in to eat. Swapped old jokes. Orlando slunk in looking as worked over as Jacques, helped by Tancred who sat together for their meal. They got along well, surprisingly. Tancred naturally deferring to the nobleman.

"You see the bitch out on the court again?" Jacques muttered, referring to your sister's training with Solomon. You nodded. "Girl like that is asking to be raped, thinkin' she can strut around like that."

You hold your tongue. Jacques misgivings were coming from the right place. There was danger Mathilde was blind to in battle. Specially for a girl. You didn't like Mathilde very much, but you'd sooner she quit playing with swords than go through any of that.

You go over to the courts to watch your sister fumble with a sword. It might be amusing at least to watch her struggle for a change. Things came so effortlessly to her in a way they didn't for you, that it was a funny little joy.

You left the feast hall to hear the metal clap of sword on sword, a familiar, comforting sound.

She had changed to near masculine dress, tight hose and a doublet. Forgoing the maile this morning and without a helmet, her black hair was tied back in two thin braids, woven by Maggie you think. Solomon pushes her just enough that sweat ran down her winter pale'd face.

She looked much more the girl of Germany, the brown gone from her skin.

You watched and felt a claw in your gut.

She was not struggling as you'd hoped, though Solomon could master her easily if he wished. She was diligent, and listened. Not just to Solomon, she listened to the steel as it sung up her arm. You recognized it, the way it was with you.

The bitch had such natural talents. You hated her.

They stopped in their mock duel as Mathilde took a breath, cleaning her forehead with cloth offered by Maggie, then a drink of water to follow. Solomon looked to her with a note of pride in his eyes. Then he saw you.

"Hugo my friend!" he hailed, "Come, the girl needs a new opponent!"

You felt your teeth grind. Was she being put at your level already? Your arms flexed instinctive at the challenge.

But you settled your raging heart a little

You drew your sword. Solomon offered you his shield, clapped you on the shoulder.

Mathilde looked at you with surprise.

You merely raised your sword.

You bring your sword up to strike but her thrust darts in quick, pushing you to the back foot. Your blades clash together in a strike, when her's falls back you thrust forward, the tip of your sword glancing off her shield. You cut again and she matches you, the two of your swords writhing for position until you break her bind and send her dancing back. Her return cut you knock aside with your shield, and you square off against her.

She licks the sweat from her upper lip. Her eyes were darting all over the place, from your sword, to your arm, to your shoulder and face. Yours kept steady, on her face and neck, not looking but knowing which muscles would pull to indicate a movement.

She was a bit better than you thought, though you were her superior. Your limbs were starting to feel warmed from exertion.

You came in with an overhand blow, hoping to over-power her. She caught your sword and turned it, bringing her shield forward and slamming it upon your chest. The two of you danced you stumbled backward gripping her shield and your sword fallen from your fingers. You tripped and Mathilde slammed down atop you.

All the wind got knocked from you, her shield pinning you down, you winced. She sat up on your lap with a wince of her own, then looked down upon you with a smirk, sword upon your throat. Her face was red and sweating.

"Do you yield?" she asked, eyebrow crooked.

You glowered up at her as she sat high upon your lap, chest thrust out and preening.

You grabbed a clump of dirt and flung it into her face. She raised her sword with a girlish cry and you pushed up, grabbing her by the collar. Your other hand closed around her throat and you turned, forcing her off you and then slamming her onto the ground.

You had her pinned from behind with a move you had learned from Sabeen, atop her, twisting one of her braids around your wrist into a convenient handle the other holding her down by the back of her neck. Mathilde squirmed underneath you, kicking out her legs violently but without purpose.

"You bastard!" she yelled, "You bastard whoreson!" Her face red and eyes wide.

You tug her braid once as if you might do something mean, but then release her, and clamber up to your feet. She lies a second in the dirt, huffing. Slowly she turns over and shoots you an angry glare, eyes wet. You offer her your hand.

"Take it," Solomon demanded.

She put her hand in yours and you pulled her up. You caught her by the shoulder, she sprung up and nearly fell. A crust of dirt falls from her face.

"Now thank him," Solomon said.

She did not look you in the eye. "Thank you," she muttered.

Solomon clapped you on the back. "Remember girl, a battle is not over so long as your enemy is willing to fight. Do not get over confident. Go clean up, you are done for the day."

Mathilde nodded and ran off. Ran with a little annoyed sob. Maggie went after her.

Solomon plucked dirt out of your hair.

"She has fire, that girl," he said, "I think she could be good in time."

"Good as me?" you asked, a sullenness coming upon you.

Solomon chuckled, shook his head. "No boy. No I think not that good." He reached down and picked up Welf's shield. Considered it. "But no matter how good, death will find us all in time." He offered it to you.

Your brother would be waiting. You threw the shield over your shoulder, sheathed your sword, and raced to meet him. You climbed the flight of stairs with a pant, legs working hard until you came before his private chambers. You came to the door-

Just as Wilhelm came out, dressed and armed, with Chihirizahd on his arm.

"On your way," he said, kissing her on the cheek and giving her a firm slap to the rump. She went with a bounce in her step. Wilhelm gave you raised brows. "Thank you for the extra half hour," he said, "Time well spent." He dusted your shoulder.
-
You are Wilhelm of Ramla.

And you walk with your squire down to your hall. You were expecting guests this day.

Two men waited and a boy. Xenophanes, the town reeve, and a stranger. A Greek. A portly, balding Greek, short and bearded with many saddle bags and an assistant.

Rosalie showed you to your seat, the simple wooden chair from which you received guests.

"I present to you Master Achilles, lately of Constantinople," she said, noting the stranger, "And this is Xenophanes' son, Alexius, who might squire for you." A lanky lad of fourteen, with dim eyes.

"Master Achilles, welcome to my hall," you said.

The engineer grinned, patting his stomach. "When I heard there was a Frankish lord looking to hire the best I came right away. It meant one thing. The killing of Muslims. I much desire this. You are looking for one experienced at warfare? One who can level buildings and ruin ships? You have found him. I have the knowledge of naptha, and the building of trebuchet and ballista. All the secrets of warfare are known to me. Towers I can build that no flame can touch. But I am not cheap."

"What price, good Roman?" you asked, leaning forward.

He smacked his lips. "I am needing money, money and resources. Three hundred is the money. Resources I can buy but will need an allowance of two hundred. If this is acceptable for you, I will be your man and build for you these engines of death."

Achilles bowed. "Your will be done, my lord," and turned to heft his bags over his shoulders.

> Achilles joins your household

Master Xenophanes' son it turned out was not a particularly clever young man. He had few numbers and no reading, but he was thought a hard worker. Every man must have a virtue, you thought. He had no training in arms either. Wet clay to be moulded, perhaps.

You struggled to see his virtue.

He'll learn manners, riding and be more of a page than a warrior, then.
>>
>>40739769
Take him on, but temporarily as he must prove his worth in a few months' time. If a hard worker is said of him, then we shall test it, and see if he improves.

Make one thing clear though: He shall be, for now, the squire of a lord, and work will not be easy.
>>
>>40739769
>> take him as a squire

Temporarily to see if he's got the right stuff if not well, we'll compensate the family somehow
>>
You nod. "He is not ideal, but he will serve. I will take your boy, Master Xenophanes, and return him to you a man."

Xenophanes bowed low, ushering forward his son. The boy staggered over to stand beside your brother. If he proved completely without wits you could always send him away. He was just a peasant.

You watched as your servants helped Achilles with his bags and smiled.

Ascalon was waiting.
