You have always wanted to be an emperor. That ambition has burned dimly in the past, tempered by reality. Now the opportunity to realise your ambition has arrived and you are determined not to let it slip. Now is the time to build your empire and become an emperor.

Last Thread: You are Imperator Talon York and you rule your own small empire, but you are not yet the emperor you dream of being… yet. Last thread you handled a bunch of surprise diplomatic matters and learnt that all your future enemies all know each other.

Rolls are d20 and the best of the first three posters. I may sometimes ask for more dice to be rolled by each player, but same rules apply otherwise. Please quote the post you are voting for or rolling against. Note there are hard-to-replace points that can be used to offset failures in rolls. Date: Near midnight on March 22nd, 1961PC

You focused your eyes on the bright light on the far side of the bridge, aware that the soldiers that should have been raising the alarm due to such a strange sight were awfully quiet. The enormous armoured and cloaked figure that was emitting the enormous wings of white light was clearly Raphael, making yet another theatrical appearance. You hoped that the reason your soldiers weren’t doing anything was because they realised it was pointless and not because the archangel had done something.

You blinked and in that time Raphael had clearly grown bored of merely standing there. The light of his wings shot towards you and the enormous figure just slightly less than twice your height stops just short of you, his wings flaring out further as if they were gripping something. The dark mass beneath his hood stares down at you.

“Talon York, I have need to speak with you,” he booms in your home tongue, those strange echoes of that other alien language barely audible. “If you are free-“

Raphael pauses suddenly, his head turning to look at Undine. For several very long moments he stares at Undine, who is very noticeably rumpled and not completely dressed. She flushes from embarrassment at the attention but is clearly not in a state to say much, which isn’t surprising because neither are you.

Then, as if nothing happened, Raphael turns back to you and resumes his spiel, “As I was saying, if you are free then I wish to discuss some proposals. Should you have... other matters to attend to then I am happy to wait the night.”

You frown at that. “If you’re going to come all the way here, I’m not about to shoo you away so quickly.”

“Time is no problem, currently,” Raphael says, straightening slightly as he stares up at your keep far beyond. “Now that your dominion is active I can reside here as necessary, so long as you do not oppose my doing so.”

It’s hard to think of a way to react to that, namely because you don’t exactly know how your dominion enables the archangel the stay here longer than normal. Or why Raphael can’t stray far from the Barrier for very long – though this was the first time he’d admitted as such, as Sylvian had only had a suspicion it was true.

“Sala and Lynn would probably appreciate it if you didn’t leave them alone for too much longer,” Undine whispers to you, though Raphael clearly notices and tilts his head for whatever reason.

Finding it impossible to read the archangel, you make your decision as to whether to take care of Raphael’s matters, which will likely be lengthy if he’s suggesting putting it off in the first place.

Military is probably bit more important (I've merely been assuming Shropham has a governor or governing council), to be honest. I'm going to take up a suggestion to have a standard legion instead of the production method now (which doesn't really work now that you're able to outproduce your budget). Basically, a standard 10k legion with a prefixed split of the standard troop types (e.g. AA, HMK, MMK, Siege Archers) and some special generals may have different legions.

Anyway, it's clear that 1 is the most popular so I'm writing that.

>>40722143
I don't think Raphael would slip into the hotsprings any time soon.
>>
You know I've been thinking. It's likely that Falwick and the Guard are going to start their shit up at relatively the same time, and we're going to stretch our army thin trying to handle all of them at once.

Luckily with Falwick we had the League to help us, but the Guard seems to be more of an attack of opportunity. I'm of the opinion when it comes to the Guard we should be conservative in our expansion and only go for Balkarin and strengthening the borders of Shropham and the latter while the rest of the civil war in the Guard plays out. I'd kind of like to avoid opening a front with Ember unless it's more on our terms and in a stronger position of strength, not trying to rebuild right after a two front war.

I'd say we should commit further to handling with Falwick, taking both of his territories, and trying to occupy and finagle Gespad into our fold as well. Having the League to help us with this will make it significantly easier.

> I'm going to take up a suggestion to have a standard legion instead of the production method now.

Been hoping for that. Building an army like we have so far feels kind of like just slapping troops together without a mind to how long they may have fought or anything. Standardized legions almost always work better for both tracking and military efficiency.

Dont forget about Fenix helping when Falwick attacks. I can see this entire scenario playing out like this.
1 Guard breaks into civil war
2 TYE joins aiding Syl's faction
3 Falwick assaults us and is removed or removes himself from the RSK
4 The RSK attacks Falwick
5 The Mage League crumbles as all external threats besides Malataine and the Lords have been removed
6 Darvui and Farlou ally and take the fight to Fenix

>>40722470
With Blackwater and zombie magister Smith. They will recruit people we defeat in a league of evil type situation.
>>
>>40722567
I would hope the ranger order would spread. We are getting more arcane archers which means we need more orders to stick them in as they prove skills.

>5 The Mage League crumbles as all external threats besides Malataine and the Lords have been removed

I wish anon. I wish ;_;.

Most likely we will have to go full social war to win over the league unless we can somehow make the separatists think Talon wouldn't mind a split without pissing off the archmage.

“Well, if you’re happy to wait for a night then I’ll take care of my other matters,” you say, mostly interested in what Raphael might be like spending the night here. “I’m not one to keep a lady waiting.”

“I have my doubts about the veracity of that statement,” Raphael says almost immediately, drawing his wings in close. “Do you have some means to reach the keep quickly? It would be ill-advised for me to enter there without you and I suspect you would not appreciate the offer of being carried.”

“I already have people who do that, so I’ll pass,” you say dryly. “This would be a good time for Karise to-“

“I’m here,” comes the voice of your fox spymaster as she teleports next to you, causing Undine to jump. “I’ll need to make two trips to take Undine.”

“I can take her,” Raphael says. “Just not Talon.”

You shrug at that and split with Undine, who looks more interested than cautious and mumbles something about Gnome mentioning this. Waiting for Raphael to teleport, you watch as his wings close around himself and Undine, before glowing brightly and forming a cocoon of light. Then they’re gone and a moment later so are you as you feel the slight warping sensation of Karise’s teleportation.

“I’ve already advised the soldiers of your visit,” Karise tells Raphael.

“Advise them that I will remain the night. I assume you have a room available underground, near the Source?” Raphael says, turning to you for the latter question.

“I’m sure that one can be arranged,” you say smoothly.

As it was, it wasn’t much trouble. Especially because the servants had to pass through the great hall to go underground and had to see the enormous archangel whose room they would be preparing. Given the usual state of the rooms down here, you were amazed at how well the stone polished up. You swore that it was cleaner than your room.

“They set up a bed. That’s good,” Raphael seems to mumble, though his voice still rings in your ears. “Sometimes they forget that.”

“I don’t think it will support your weight,” you say.

“I don’t always look like this,” he says, shrugging exagerratedly to emphasise the bulky armour he’s wearing. “I shall see you of the morning, Talon York. Do try not to exhaust yourself too much, I’d prepare if your mind were active. My matters are not light.”

It’s more than an hour later when Raphael’s existence comes back to mind, your thoughts having mostly been on the two fiery women in your room. Both Gnome and Sylvian are lurking in the hot springs, speaking quietly to each other and they remind you of his presence.

“I’ve never actually seen him outside of that armour,” Sylvian complains. “I had hoped he might be lured here.”

“That would normally happen, but I suspect Raphael is being more cautious right now,” Gnome says, looking at you and waving you in.

Joining them, you say, “You’ve seen him under the armour? What’s he like? Any competition?”

Gnome laughs. “That depends on who you’re competing for. Still, he’s warded his room so it’s not as simple as just walking in on him like I did centuries ago. You’d probably need to do a more daring raid.”

“I hope you’re not being serious,” Sylvian mutters, shaking her head.

You, on the other hand…

Harrowmont has more population than suggested (I've been putting off a proper discussion/reading with architectanon for no proper reason) but it is smaller. Whilst it would be lying to suggest that you weren’t interested in seeing Raphael’s true form, you were also wary of angering him. That, and you also didn’t know what you would see. By speaking with some of the older beings near you, including the two relaxing by your side in the hot spring, you had heard some stories about Samael. In some, the Archangel of Death was a rather buxom young woman with black hair of Lynn’s height. In others, a very sharp looking young man with silver hair who was nearly as tall as yourself. Both forms had jet black wings that seemed to suck in light from around them and were fitting for her title.

Given those stories, you suspected that the Archangels may not have a ‘true form’ or that it’s not so easy to discern. Raphael had referred to Samael as his sister, so that at least solidified how the latter self-identified, but that told you nothing about Raphael himself. As such, you figured to let sleeping dogs lie. For now.

“So, leaving aside whatever Raphael may look like under his armour,” you say, eliciting a click of the tongue from Gnome, “what about some of his oddities? Like that voice – it sounds like he’s speaking to me in my home tongue, from Carrthrus, but I hear whispers of another.”

“That’s the Angelic Tongue,” Sylvian says, to Gnome’s surprise. “When angels speak in angelic they do so in a coded fashion, which causes listeners to hear the words in their original tongue. It’s an effective way to communicate with many people, given that everybody will understand what is being said.”

“A coded fashion?” Gnome asks, looking confused.

“That’s how Sirion spoke of it to me centuries ago,” Sylvian says, speaking of one of the ancient Angel Lords. “They don’t speak angelic normally, like I have done sometimes. Rather they actually speak in a way that distorts reality – a minor use of their astral power, I suppose.”

“What about teleportation?” you ask, finding it interesting that Sylvian knows far more than Gnome. “Raphael wouldn’t teleport with me.”

“Possibly because he feared his power interacting with yours,” Sylvian says, sounding uncertain. “I don’t know how angels teleport, but I do know it’s theoretically impossible to prevent them teleporting somewhere with wards. Some of the written legends of my kind, dating back to the Cataclysm, speak of the archangels, typically Azrael, being able to teleport into the midst of infernal fortresses and slay their generals. Possibly that mechanism makes it dangerous to teleport another astral power user? Especially one that may have touched Pandemonium, which is the polar opposite of everything the angels stand for.”

You frown at that, not liking the idea of Raphael being able to teleport anywhere. You wondered if your dominion could stop that. Probably not, if the infernals couldn’t.

“Well, what about-“ you start to say but are interrupted.

“If you’re going to talk about me, you could at least invite me,” comes a rather sweet sounding voice from the entrance.

You turn to look and see a young woman with golden hair and wearing little else. She looks rather skittish, in contrast to how confident her voice had sounded. Is that-

“Gabriel? But how are you-“ Gnome starts to say, sounding shocked, but then her voice becomes annoyed. "Oh, so you’re taking on one of your old subordinates forms instead of your own.”

“It’s not like he’s around to complain,” says the woman as she slowly makes her way to the hot spring, eyes darting between the three of you.

>How do you react?

>>40723638

>I definitely would like to do that. I have a particular love for cultural architecture. I might try to add something like that in.

I'd honestly think it would be more interesting to go for something a little more unique then just opera.

Maybe a large cathedral like building that houses many forms of art? Like one area has singing, The other has plays based on events from the empire, and other historical narratives, Another one has Paintings.

That way Talon could directly sponsor many forms of art without directly looking at them all at once. Could also be used to fund propaganda as needed.

That's not true - it's more that Undine didn't fully dress herself after the performance under the bridge, probably because she was going to follow Talon back to his room. Raphael's appearances are more theatrical - appearing in your keep when you return; standing at the site you slew Belrauth at until you came.

I can't see Talon letting something this basic screw with him. At this point I think if a demon lord was to fly out from under his bed he would just raise an eyebrow.

You’re pretty sure that’s Raphael. You’re also pretty sure that’s not her real set of tits, as nice as they are. Still, you only live once and who are you to complain when something like this falls into your lap?

“And I thought you were all work and no play. Why don’t you come join us?” you ask lightly, leaning back against the edge of the hot spring.

The cavern goes silent. Three pairs of eyes bore into you, only one of which is younger than a millennium. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say three thousand years of experience piled upon you out of surprise. A small part of you wishes that was four thousand years. Or perhaps five thousand, if you can ever meet Samael and get her in here alongside your fluffy empress.

“I see that the books didn’t exaggerate this part,” Raphael says, giving you an old smile and tilting her head in a familiar manner. She walks towards the hot spring, looking more confident than earlier. “Though I have to admit I wasn’t expecting you to be so quick.”

“I think that goes for the three of us,” Gnome grumbles. “You don’t even know what he looks like and you’re still hitting on him.”

“It’s kind of worrying that you still say ‘he’ even though I can clearly see that she lacks the requisite parts,” you say, staring at a normally private part of a woman.

“I’m whatever you want me to be,” Raphael says with a wink, then pauses. “But not really. This is just more convenient.”

“And amusing from my perspective,” Sylvian says, leaning against you and speaking into your ear. “Gabriel was the old Chief Primarch – he used to alternate between male and female forms every decade or so. This is his female form.”

Ah, now it makes a little bit of sense. Although Raphael was currently in a female form that was clearly not his own, it was also one that belonged to an angel that Sylvian thought of as a ‘he’ despite how… buxom this form looked right now.

Raphael dips her rather delicate foot into the water next to Gnome before nodding but before she slips in she glances at Gnome and frowns. Putting her arms over her breasts with a sudden harrumph, she instead wanders over and slips in on the other side of Sylvian. You raise an eyebrow at that.

“I used to tease Gabriel when he looked like this,” Gnome admits, shrugging with a smile.

“So, what things about me did you want to talk about?” Raphael asks, looking rather relaxed in the hot spring and steadfastly ignoring your earlier flirting and current male gaze.

>1. Focus on this current power of shapeshifting(?). As well as why Raphael is even here.

“So, I was actually fairly curious about Saareg,” you say. “From what I’ve heard, the two of us would have been rather similar so doe he get this treatment too?”

“Treatment?” Raphael asks.

“The treatment of you waving your naked chest in my face,” you point out, literally pointing at her chest.

“The Chief Primarch’s naked chest,” she corrects, smiling. “And attitude, for that matter. And why would you think I would act like this towards Saareg?”

“Well, we’re both powerful knights, famous warriors, etcetera,” you say, thinking this should be obvious. “If you’re going to tease me sexually, why not him?”

Once again the cavern falls silent in surprise at something you’ve said. This time you feel more like a dunce than somebody who’s done something audacious, however. You scowl at the puzzled looks on Sylvian and Raphael’s faces, and especially at the near-giggling face of Gnome.

Sylvian cottons on first, “You’ve… never met Saareg, have you?”

“No. Gnome has indicated he’s something of a knightly killing machine, however,” you say slowly in reply, trying to think whether there’s been any indication previously that Saareg wouldn’t be the sort of person Raphael would tease like this.

“Killing machine is right,” Raphael says, stretching her arms above her head in a rather provocative motion. “Knight is more teasing. Saareg isn’t exactly in a position to enjoy me like this.”

Gnome’s face is still annoying you so you try to guess what the hell they mean.

Ordinary angels don't - they're just huge masses of astral energy/soul that have to take on a physical form in order to exist in the material plane - they could and do build a gender identity if they wanted to, simply by associating themselves with their physical form for long enough (I don't think we need to go into that, however). Archangels are a little different (and partially the topic of this scene).

“Because he’s a revenant? Old sack of bones?” you guess, though you do remember Gnome commenting that he did have a proper body.

Raphael pouts. “I’m not going to have a sack of bones serving me like those lazy angels who couldn’t give their revenant a proper body.”

“You didn’t make Saareg, though, did you?” you ask, remembering something. "You said that he only came to serve you over time.”

“Yes, but my tastes aligned with Marianne’s,” she says, as if she’s referring to a piece of furniture she inherited. “There wouldn’t have been as much of interest if Saareg had been left to degenerate as much as some of the other revenants – the mind reflects the body, as you can well see.”

You frown at that, not exactly liking the subtle suggestion there. Raphael was certain acting weirdly now that she was taking on this rather… sexual form. It felt like you were being reminded of the fact that your power would affect you, however. The way you towered over Gnome when she was previously nearly your height made that clear and it wouldn’t do to forget Raphael’s ulterior motive – especially when her advice contradicted Baelrus’.

“So what does he look like?” you ask.

[DC16 Raphael’s Mood]

It just means you need to wait to meet Saareg rather than being told what he looks like.

So, military stuff. I need something that’s better to organise, both in the sense of production and for war. The scale is big enough now that I feel safe we can have legions of 10k in size and use that for some time now. The idea would be you would have a military of, say, 180k soldiers divided into a number of legions. Important generals such as Lynn, Talon, Phillias, Arail etc would get a special legion which could be tailored towards their approach on the battlefield (e.g. Arail would have more FMKs and AAs, no HMKs) and could be larger than the 10k size otherwise used.

The question then is what the composition of your standard legion should be, and deviations can be decided later. Only standard troops will be allocated – that is, Arcane Archers, Siege Archers, all varieties of mage-knights including nightwalkers, battlemages, fox bombardiers and spellblades. More specialised units, such as fox knights, daywalkers, noble knights, rangers and Daerfir will either be attached to specific legions or called on as necessary as a complement. Certain units, such as the Griffin Knights, will be attached to specific generals at all times (e.g. Lynn gets the Griffin Knights, Phillias gets his LMKs).

Given that you’ll have 18 legions, there is an upper limit to how many of certain unit types you can have. These don’t take into account special legions using up more, but that can be handled as necessary. Note that you don’t have to assign all units to the standard legion and can instead have them included en masse in specific legions (e.g. have all spellblades in Rayza’s legion rather than spread thinly across all legions).

18 legions of 10,000 soldiers each.

HMKs – 1600 per legion (29k overall)
FMKs – 1200 per legion (22k overall)
AAs and MMKs – Have no limits.
Siege Archers – 400 per legion (7200 overall)
Battlemages – 150 per legion if you maintain high training standards (2700 overall); 300 per legion if you let them slip a lot (5400 overall)
Spellblades – 50 per legion (900 overall)
Mystic Fox Bombardiers – 100 per legion (1800 overall)
Nightwalker MKs – 200 per legion (3600 overall), but also subtracts from whatever MK type the use; can be increased if you loosen requirements for making more vampires

Well, we could do it like that and it might work better for some of the more specialised units such as spellblades. I am hoping to keep the number of special generals to a minimum, however. I think my list right now is basically: Talon, Lynn, Rayza, Phillias, Arail and Fuurin. The remaining legions would be commanded by 'generic' generals such as Parras.

>>40726342
Give me a minute and I'll post something brief.
>>
>>40726342
AA = light artillery, Useful at killing light and medium armored foes. They are also much more maneuverable.
SA + heavy artillery, Useful at killing heavily armored foes.
>>
>>40726251
Personally I feel that Nightwalkers should be specialized units. Not really standard to any legion more a "The first and second legion are spearheading the assault. Give them 500 nightwalkers." To keep the foes from predicting where they will come from.

Battlemage wise keep the high training standards and max them out per legion.

Spell blade wise we will want to keep them into ratios so they can be easily protected by the Mage knights as well as keep up the pressure with their magic in the front lines.
>>
>>40726465
i think they should lead the HMKs of each legion
>>
>>40726342
>AA

Lots of them. Good spread of damage but not good with large armor.

>SA

Few of them really good with armor.

>>40726465
I mostly think this about the nightwalkers because if everyone knows they are in a legion they can predict that and make sure to keep their eyes out for night. While if they have to guess until they show and if when they show up they have higher numbers then it's much more of a bitch.
>>
>>40726492
Personally I feel that dilutes their effectiveness too much. They are weaker in the daytime and there is only 200 of them at max in each legion. Nightwalkers are best as a drop 500 or more and overwhelm everything unit. Having a small number like that effective but still within reasonable possibility for enough MMK to defeat.
>>
>Nightwalkers make for perfect night time sentries and guards, being somewhat resistant to magic (or I'm drunk, which is likely) keen eyesight especially in the dark, stronger, faster, and harder to kill means they can send signals off with nearly nothing to stop then save something that makes a LOT of noise or is very flashy.
>>
I feel as though we should be grouping Spellblades and Nightwalkers into larger portions. So 100 Spellblades into every second army. Nightwalkers could work out great if we specialize a legion into them. Something like one legion with 1000 of them.
>>
>>40726555
thats true. i assume felix will become a general, mayne he could lead most of them then we have some in our persobal legion too
>>
>>40726555

I definitely agree with that. But I think we should sort of form a "Midnight Sons" Legion for night time ops like that. They are heavy drops that work en masse, but not highly specialized enough to warrant their own attachment status.
>>
>>40726585
The main issue with this is spellblades are basically frontline mages that can give our Mage knights the magical support they can't always get from backline battlemages.

If we do that we might run into the issues where we need magic power in one legion that doesn't have it.

>>40726578
They do make for excellent night raiders and the likes.

Okay, so I think I might sort out the special generals first given some of the arguments over nightwalkers and spellblades. As I only want six special legions right now, I think I'll dump Talon's personal legion and instead just have him attach to another with his own special units (like the 200 Daerfir that follow him). I'll post something on that very shortly.

>>40726342
HMKs - heavy shock troops. Resistant to range and magic but aren't the fastest and get exhausted over a long slog.
FMKs - utility flyers. Can fight like an MMK, launch explosives, weaken enemies, be scouts and transport others. Vulnerable to anti-MK ranged.
AAs - long-range archers suitable against anything less than an HMK or magical wards (e.g. battlemages, spellblades, foxes).
Siege Archers - very long-range archers suitable against anything less than fortress defences and powerful magical wards. Relatively slow firing but heavily armoured.
Spellblades - extremely dangerous and agile warriors. Powerful at short range and in melee, but vulnerable to long-range magical attacks and can be easily overwhelmed by superior numbers of tough units (e.g. HMKs)
Foxes - Good range and excellent against all magical defenses and ignore armour. Can also perform excellently in melee, if necessary.
Nightwalker MKs - very powerful version of the MK they're replacing.

>>40726578
>being somewhat resistant to magic (or I'm drunk, which is likely)
Nightwalkers aren't resistant to magic. When they're transformed, they can only be harmed by powerful magic, however.
>>
>>40726617
We know that 500 of them would take around 1500+ MMKs to win. I'd consider that worth putting them as a detachment.

The big thing though I"m thinking is we can slip them into the armies so the foes don't know about them. Then in mid battle suddenly vampries.

We should have a good chunk of them in Talons personal Legion though I do agree.
>>
>>40726685
>Spellblades - extremely dangerous and agile warriors. Powerful at short range and in melee, but vulnerable to long-range magical attacks and can be easily overwhelmed by superior numbers of tough units (e.g. HMKs)

This is pretty much the reason I think it's more effective to jam Spellblades inside masses of mage knights to protect them.
>>
>>40726685
>I think I'll dump Talon's personal legion

I don't really like that idea. Talon has his own tactics he tends to use that is different then other generals.

Personally I would go for about 2-4 special legions. Talon, That fox, Arail, and our new lord general.
>>
So do you guys want to see a badass hero-unit type SA who can fight in melee like a HMK?

He'd be one hell of a general, methinks.
>>
>>40726685
Thank you!

Now, to see what numbers to use...is there any reason to have standard legions without the maximum number of each troop divided equally?
>>
>>40726814

I don't think he really needs a Legion though. Talon tends to gather what he needs when and then does an air drop via fox. He can take over just about anywhere because of the vastly varied tactics he has shown before.

The difference is that Talon rarely commands by himself. Also, there is no Lord General.

So, the special generals and their special units and focus.

Caitlyn – excellent frontal attacker but no siege experience. Excels with heavy units and foxes (they get a morale boost, basically). Attached: 250 Griffin Knights
Rayza – good jack-of-all-trades but excels with mages, spellblades and knights. Is also a dragon. Attached: 200 Elite HMKs (Dracogriffs); Lyria (powerful black dragon)
Felix – excels in all offensive situations, so long as he can close to melee. Excellent with all melee units but okay with ranged – foxes dislike him but nightwalkers love him.
Phillias – excellent defender and can command up to 20k troops (can have a double-size legion). Handles all units well but fumbles with more esoteric units such as foxes and spellblades. Attached: 350 elite LMKs
Fuurin – amazing at range and in field battles, Fuurin utilises all ranged units and mystic foxes at their best but does poorly with nightwalkers. Attached: 25 elite Mystic Fox Knights.
Arail – excellent raider and excels at swift and daring attacks. Best with light, fast-moving units including FMKs and AAs. Attached: 285 Elite FMKs

Talon – doesn’t command a legion (instead commandeers others) but has 200 elite Daerfir attached to him and 5 dragon knights.

Anyway, the discussion here should mostly be about what you want to move out of the standard legion and into these legions (e.g. no spellblades in standard legions, or no nightwalkers in standard legions). I'm mostly trying to piece something together now.

>>40726864

Thing there is he tends to favor a defensive style with night raids and tricks and also favors Heavy assault units backed by archery.

He can use any tactics but in effectiveness a heavily armored Legion with lots of ranged power and nightwalkers works best.

I wouldn't say I don't see the logic but I also feel that we should have a first legion that people can hope they get into that Talon can lead as he needs. Gives a good force to rally around.

What about Phrace and that one FMK captain?
>>
>>40726904

I'd say no Nightwalkers for sure, they are just specialized enough to work best together. So we could basically create an entire legion dedicated to their varied usages in MK with the eventual DWNK and assumed DW Mages acting as the special add ons. That legion might actually be smaller simply due to numbers involved.

Spellblades have this great usage in mixed unit tactics, and we've seen how much the DracoGriffs have excelled with Rayza basically being one on steroids. So I wouldn't take them out entirely, but give her the lion's share with the necessary ingredients to do what she does best with them.
>>

Phrace is under Rayza, the FMK captain is Arail

I'd say split the Foxes between Lynn and Furriin, they get the most use out of them and if Phillias is having trouble with those types of units I can't imagine our run off the mill guys are going to fare much better with them.

Noble Knights would probably be best suited as attachments (Black Stone, Golden Bear) while the professional grades go to Lynn, Rayza, and Phill.

Throw all the Nightwalkers on Felix. I'm sure he'll be over come with joy.

Echoing an earlier Anon saying giving the lion share of Spellblades to Rayza, but leave some for general legions as well.

Arail functions well with generic units, doesn't need anything particularly special.

I think that's it.

VOTES
So a short series of votes on certain special units and commanders.

FOXES
>1. Split the Mystic Foxes between Caitlyn and Fuurin, given their expertise with them (900 each).
>2. Slightly increased complements of foxes for Caitlyn and Fuurin (250 each), with the remainder spread across the legions except Felix's and Phillias' (about 100 each).

NIGHTWALKERS
>1. Assign all 3600 nightwalkers to Felix's legion.
>2.Assign 2000 nightwalkers to Felix's legion, with the rest in reserve.
>3. Give Felix an elite complement of nightwalkers (600), with the rest spread across the other legions except Phillias' and Fuurin's (200 each).

SPELLBLADES
>1. Assign all 900 to Rayza.

>Caitlyn

Just add a bit more heavy units to her. A little higher dose of foxes.

>Rayza

Just crank up the mages. She is already pretty efficient herself as a spellblade so there isn't much reason to have much higher amounts of those. I'd rather give her better backline support as she needs it.

>Felix

Give him about 1500 nightwalkers and load him up with more FMK's to in order to get him the recon and movement capability to get in melee range fast.

>Phillias

I'd honestly suggest just loading him down with MMK's in a double legion.

>Fuurin

He should have the most foxes of them all and more ranged.

>Arail

FMK and archers all day every day. Give him lower heavies to fit in more AA and FMKs.

A lot of these can easily be shifted though the legions. That is lowering the amount of heavies Fuurin has in order to give more the lynn.

>>
>>40727542
It could be useful to call them something like the Sentinels. They are immortal so we can make their role something like the immortal warriors of the empire who could also be used to personally remember events of the empire.

That also gives a reason for more people to become daywalkers. Not only do you get immortality you get a pretty good status job.

Sentinels kind of works in the sense they are the every watchful, but I don't know if it would work defensively like the name traditionally dictates. Then again NWMK all tough nuts to crack so the DW may be the same. Eh I could dig it.

Yeah he is meritocratic but some organizations just don't function that well if you spread it too far.

Like mage towers use and entire other branch of magic so opening them up just leads to incompatibility. Knights are a human level organization build based off of the past. We don't want to open the flood gates to have such a mixture of dragons and everything else that they stop being monolithic just due to their role being better that way.

If a knight order wanted to put a non-human in then fine. But I don't think we should force them on this issue. Much better to stick them in things designed just for their role then building exceptions as it happens. That way we can take advantage of any unique traits instead of having it buried under all the humans.

Given that Raphael largely does alone time for her existence, you’re not too surprised. It seemed like it had taken quite an effort for her to come out like this and she seemed to be hiding behind the façade of this not being her body. Still, the fact that she’s going to retreat for the night means this is probably your only chance for a while to ask or do anything before she retreats back into her armoured form. You…

“I have to admit that I’m a bit curious about this... shapeshifting ability of yours,” you say, supressing the desire to just reach out and do something to Raphael you might not regret. “I’m pleasantly surprised by you coming out here like this, even if it is very different to what you’ve shown previously.”

“I take it you like it,” Raphael says with a broad smile, using her arms to push her large chest together and moving them back and forth. “It’s interesting to do this sometimes. I figured this body type was what you liked.”

“The tits probably helped a lot, yes,” Gnome says dryly, taking her turn at emphasising her own.

“They’re nice but I appreciate all sizes, great and small,” you say with pride.

“Oh? They all seem quite large from my perspective,” Raphael says with a frown, gaze shifting between Sylvian and Gnome whose chests are larger than her own right now.

“Salamander, Caitlyn and Taira are quite small,” you protest, not wanting to get lumped in with somebody so boring as to enjoy the fullness of the female range. “And there are some more normal sizes, too.”

“Like Noah,” Gnome says, causing you to grimace slightly.

“Really?” Raphael says, her tone light. “Well, if you’re curious about this it’s rather straightforward – angels are just a huge mass of astral energy, a very large soul really. We archangels do have a physical body that ages, if at a different rate to humans, but we can freely take on a different form and merely remove our true material form from this plane temporarily. It’s useful for handling different situations, such as combat and diplomacy.”

“And flirting,” Gnome points out.

“Experimenting,” Raphael corrects. “But yes, flirting works. Samael has wooed princesses and queens before by taking on a male form and… confused certain knights and kings. We do have to spend a certain amount of time in our real form, however. We disassociate a little too much with reality the less time we spend in it – for some archangels this isn’t a problem but I am the Archangel of Life and I need to remain in touch with the world if I am to police it.”

“I take it that’s largely in private,” you say.

“Nowadays, yes,” she admits, frowning. “But I never spent much time like that in public even when the angels were active in the world. Plus, when I’m in public I prefer to experiment.”

As if to emphasise that, Raphael openly cups one of her breasts and plays with it openly. Okay, so she was mostly just screwing with you for the hell of it. You looked at her and she gave you a rather feral grin, her golden eyes staring into yours.

Gabriel's form isn't exactly little. Short but definitely very developed and mature in the face.

>Target met

For a second you see something else in the archangel’s face. Her golden eyes are instead a deep, vicious red and her deep golden hair becomes paler and straighter. The feral grin truly does look bestial and you feel as if you’re staring into the visage of a being with a depth of viciousness and destruction far beyond any monster you’ve ever seen before. There’s a primality here that you suspect is not often felt.

Oh, and the lust. That was hard to miss. A small part of your mind said this felt familiar, as if somebody had turned a mirror on you. It felt like those eyes were going to eat you up, in both senses.

Then you blink and the world returns to normal and you no longer feel like you’re seeing the primal reality of life. Well, almost everything goes back to normal – Raphael’s eyes are now that same deep red and there’s definitely something very off-putting about them, far beyond anything you’ve ever seen in Aladria’s red eyes.

“I- That was unexpected,” Raphael says, her voice less sweet and playful than before, though clearly still the same voice. “I apologise. I need to go now.”

Before you can react, Raphael practically leaps out of the water. The room explodes into bright light as her enormous white wings burst from her bare back and she jets across the room in an instant. In her absence, you stare at the waves she’s left in the water.

“That was interesting,” Sylvian says, looking bemused.

“Looks like his form changing failed slightly,” Gnome comments, sounding amused. “Those were definitely Raphael’s real eyes. Still as vicious looking as ever.”

“Well, they’re certainly unique,” you say, thinking on the rest of what you saw earlier. “What is it, some ‘the eyes are the window to the soul’ thing?”

“The archangels are incredibly powerful magical beings,” Gnome says, sounding like she’s talking to a child. “Naturally, their true bodies are filled to the brim with magic and reflect their aspects. Samael is the same way, but reflects differently – for her it’s touch. Things that she touches, or even plays when it comes to instruments, have a very… haunting effect. For Raphael, it’s his eyes. They reflect the more primal nature of life.”

“Hence the viciousness? And the lust,” you say, mostly mumbling the last part.

“Well, I’ve never seen the latter but I suppose it could happen,” Gnome says, still amused. “Still, try not to comment on them. He doesn’t like his eyes very much and he currently likes you a lot.”

You’re not sure how to take that last comment, particular given the gender term she’s using. In the morning, you…

The main thing I'll say on this is that angels in this world aren't omnibeneficient or serving a being that is the same. There's no astral concept of 'do good' or 'do evil' as it's far too vague. The closest would probably be the concepts of 'Doom' and 'Existence', really, but even then they're very vague and uncommon.

Honestly, if Pandemonium is the polar opposite of what angels are it should be relatively obvious what their central concept is.

I assume that Pandemonium entails chaos, but in order to exist in this plain it needs form. So it lashes out into the world looking for a form to fill it. It found Talon and he has been aggressively forming the chaos since.

This also fits into why Raphael believes we will become rigid in our beliefs and ideals, because as an angel he cant think any other way. A being of order cant one day ignore the very thing that gives him his life and existence, while chaos doesnt care.

>>40729201
Fae are still creatures with minds even if they reshape themselves from moment to moment. Meaning they arent pure chaos. I think the shards are just Pandemonium reaching into the world randomly. Every once in a while a Talon happens.

The Gendarmes are too powerful in their current generation for Marle to not develop magic - the royal bloodline of the Seraphs is strong like that. It takes a long string of bad luck or poor choices for it to dwindle out like it did in Fenix's family (though he managed to get it back in his children by marrying well).

Raph's lust may not have been normal.

>2.

You decide to visit your precocious ‘nephew’ as you more or less thought of him. Mal had started going through the basics of controlling magic, though Marle had yet to show any talent. He only did it because half the women in the castle were insistent that he had powerful magical capability that he’d yet to show.

“It’s the complete opposite of everything I was ever taught as a mage,” he grumbled one day.

“Most of the women saying he’s going to be powerful can literally sense the magic in him,” you pointed out.

This morning it seems that the lesson wasn’t in magic but merely about it. Or rather, about why Marle didn’t have magic.

“How come Sai can do all those cool things and I can’t?” Marle whines, his mess of dark brown hair shaking about as he expressed his frustration.

Talon doesn't have a chaos concept though. Seems more like the shard altered his soul or something like that.

“Because she’s not human, Marle. Things work different. You’ll be happy for it in fifteen years when you’ll be much, much bigger than her,” Mal says, clearly used to this. “Speaking of being happy about being big, here’s your uncle Talon. Maybe you should quit whining and talk to him.”

“I’m not whining,” Marle whines. “Morning, Uncle Talon. Sai told me that Uncle Vad told her that the Archangel Raphael was here. Is he really?”

“Why did you hear from Sai and not from your father?” you ask ruffling Marle’s hair as you greeted him, though you could hardly tell once you removed your hand that you’d done so.

“Because my son is precocious enough to get up at the crack of dawn and run around the garden with those little foxes,” Mal grumbles. “Which then made his mother unhappy because she didn’t have the time to tidy him up for a day of lessons.”

“Nobody ever complains when I look like this, so why does it matter?” Marle says, smirking. “Right, Uncle Talon? You don’t care how you look to others, right? That’s what being cool is all about.”

What? The Fae have Arcadia, not Pandemonium.

You decide to give Marle a life lesson in how everything you say and do comes back to bite you. To make him listen, you use a close example.

“You might think you don’t care what people think of you now, but years later when you’ve forgotten something you’ve done, others will remember,” you say, Mal nodding along with you as Marle looks sceptical. “For instance, I’ve known your mother since she was much younger. I can tell you all sort of embarrassing stories – are you interested?”

“Of course, Uncle Talon!” Marle says, overjoyed at the possibility of learning something embarrassing about his own unflappable mother.

“Okay, so do you think she doesn’t care about that or how you might think of her after hearing one of these stories?” you ask.

“That’s… oh, she would if it was interesting,” he says, kind of getting the point. “I still want to know.”

“Not until you’re older,” Mal says. “Old enough that you can get in trouble for asking us about these stories.”

Marle scowls. “So, is there an archangel here?”

“Yes, there is,” comes a voice from the doorway that belongs to Sarah. “And Imperator Talon needs to go meet him before he gets unhappy.”

The angels aren't really the opposites of the infernals except in terms of their existence (i.e. infernals have no souls, angels are nothing but soul). The infernals had an opposite in terms of their concept but not anymore.

Basically, the Doom/Existence thing doesn't apply to any of the divine races from the Emergence. It's just a foreign concept to them taht they all basically stand in the same spot on that axis.

“You have lessons to complete, Marle,” you say. “I imagine you’ll get plenty of opportunities to see him over time – so right now you do as your father says.”

The underlying message is there for Mal, however. This isn’t about denying Marle something but keeping him about from Raphael. You doubted there’d be an issue but you were still disturbed from what happened overnight. Enough so that when Raphael’s attention lingered on Sarah’s pregnant form as she kissed you goodbye to go join Mal and Marle in their studies you got a bit defensive.

“Is there a problem?” you ask Raphael, who is back in his armoured form, your tone defensive.

There’s a long pause as Raphael seems to weigh up your emotions and potentially his own thoughts. “Not as such. I had merely assumed that you were not the type to have children.”

“And you don’t have any problems now that I am that type?” you press. “Especially because there is also a very pregnant fox.”

“The odds of your child, or any of your children, having the same degree of power as you do are extremely slim,” Raphael says, skipping to the point with his booming voice. “And even if they did, it would merely be your responsibility to guide them in this world and ensure they’re as productive as you are. The foxes don’t concern me – their race was created to be beneficial to the world, in stark contrast to what surrounded their maker. Whatever growth their race undergoes with you is not my concern.”

Well, that was certainly a much more blunt answer than you’d been expecting. It’s almost as if Raphael was about to ask something great of you.

“You’re going to ask something very large of me, aren’t you?” you ask the archangel, feeling savvy.

“There are two matters I wish to discuss,” Raphael says, ignoring you.

Walking to the far side of the room and staring out the window as rain drizzles upon it, Raphael makes a very impressive figure. The fact that you know it’s just for effect means you don’t hesitate to grab one of the small sandwiches on the side table.
“The first relates to Pharos and the fact I find them… unseemly,” the archangel begins. “Saareg has finally returned from his adventure in that corrupted landmass and his news is dire. The old emperor is dead, and much of the Imperial Court has been damaged in the infighting that commenced afterwards. A new empress has emerged and she concerns me.”

“Because female rulers are troublesome?” you ask, sounding sceptical. “Or is this the Shadow Empress?”

“Female rulers are less trouble than the male ones,” Raphael says, turning his head to stare at you. “And this is the daughter of the Shadow Empress. Her hold has solidified and now she turns her eyes afar.”

“To Gauron.”

“To you,” Raphael says. “If she is to extend her power to Gauron, she will need to tangle with the other powers. Saareg believes that you are to be their first target, mostly due to the fact it’s possible to engage your empire without drawing the continent in due to your involvement with the mystic foxes.

“I have no love for Pharos, and certainly do not wish to see their ‘geomancers’ molest the land her,” Raphael says, his nominally flat voice seeming to gain emotion as he speaks of the Pharosian sorcerers. “If you are willing to act as my agent, alongside the God-King Kasandor of Malataine, then I can assist you in removing agents of Pharos that are working against you. I will have no more of their artifacts or sorcery intrude on these shores and between yourself and Malataine, we should be able to deny them the coast.”

You weren’t sure what being Raphael’s agent meant, so you asked. Still, this whole spiel sounded more like Raphael was more concerned about the intrusion of Pharos into Gauron and simply wanted you concerned and willing to aid him.

“To be my agent means to undertake actions in my name and at my order,” Raphael says. “You will take an oath each year in person to reaffirm your stance. In exchange, the actions will fall under my diplomatic banner. Should Pharos take offense, then they will deal with me personally.”

In other words, you had the perfect excuse to stick it to Pharos. The downside was that Raphael would certainly be rather zealous in his actions regarding Pharosian imports, having seen what happened to Shropham. It would also harm trade relations with Pharos and set your course against the Imperial Court rather early. Still, it might work out well for you. Accepting now would surely strengthen your bond with Raphael. You…

Ah, Okay. Yeah honestly so long as nothing in that oath says "You can't argue why this is a bad idea or try and change my mind." I can't see why not to help the archangel out.

Other then getting pharos riled up.

Does Raph have any estimation on when Pharos might sent something like a expeditionary Force?

No, it's not. This is more like ratifying a UN treaty or the like, except Raphael can straight out say 'you're not meeting your obligation'. You're only his agent in terms of stopping Pharos from doing certain things, not for everything.

Anyway, 1 wins. Probably going to make a new thread with the next post as we're close to page 10 and I might run SoL after my usual break.

2!!!!!

You know I wonder if it would be possible to maybe stage a falling out with Raphael, Then given the coast seems clear Pharos will most likely make a move.

Then wipe them all out and use the support of Raphael to make it so they just pretty much challenged him directly.

Nah just more agree to don't buy crack cocaine from the shifty fuckers from acroos the pound and help me Remove them when they come and I'll help by removing any agents associated with pharos that are fucking with you

If anything we're just straight up cutting ourselves off of any magic and artifacts related to Pharos

Its an alliance with a very strict and clear term
>>
>>40730672
I'm worried about being subservient to another and be forced into a position of having to follow an order or do something that could have adverse affects on our selfs, is an alliance on the table instead of blind submission?
>>
>>40731017
Pretty much. Honestly we want to remove the poison pharos might try and plant early on. There is a danger here though.

You can just say no if he asks you to do something crazy? What's he going to do, kill you? He could have done that anyway. Still, negotiation was something you could have done if you waited.
