You are Urist Twelfthbay, the moe personification of Dwarf Fortress and the physical manifestation of (among other things) ALL the short, sturdy creatures fond of drink and industry. Unraveling all the ridiculously psychedelic implications of that bullshit is a work in progress, although that’s not exactly your top priority at the moment.

Right now, you’re in your own little dream realm, DF Arena. Its original purpose was to be a combination building practice area and physics sandbox- except it's now a place where plot devices, deep fucking foreboding, and book-riding fairies pop up more times than you'd like. And you’re shaking down a book-riding fairy for information about your friends.

... jeez. Even THINKING that sentence in the privacy of your mind makes you feel like a moron. But hey, Histoire just agreed to show you what’s currently going on with Mojang, your oldest friend who may or may not be in heaps of trouble, and you're willing to put up with a lot of shit for that sorta information.

The little blonde fairy- small enough to make even you feel like a giant- is just sitting there with her eyes half-lidded in concentration. The awkward silence stretches on just long enough to make you wonder if you’d gone irrevocably insane about five minutes ago, and if this is all actually just part of your fucking imagination, when a five-by-five patch of reality in front of you suddenly starts showing something else-

You are Mojang! You are the moe personification of Minecraft, an adventurer in Gamindustri, and you’ve been moving on up in the world. You even received an offer from CPU Green Heart herself, to become a member of her Basilicom and a troubleshooter working exclusively for Leanbox- of course you accepted, especially once she agreed to let you keep working with your preexisting contacts. How could you NOT take that deal? You’ve always held CPU Green Heart in high esteem- even Urist always carried a torch for Leanbox (whether she admits it or not), and you’ve always trusted your big sis’s judgment on these matters.

Things aren’t… /quite/ happening the way you’d expected, but you have faith that things will work out eventually, at least once you find a way to escape from this unending nightmare of horrors and jump scares!

For the past few days, you’ve been trapped in what looks like some sort of small office: you can’t build anything, you can’t /move/, and all you can do is access cameras, flip switches, and close doors. Occasionally, there are flashes of movement out of the corners of your eyes, and strange sounds coming from the corridors beyond, but nothing's gotten you yet

Honestly, it’s a little frustrating, but you've always had faith that as long as you're willing to put in a little elbow grease, things will work out for the best. And you've got your fair share of elbow grease hidden up your sleeve, and you've been biding your time, waiting for the right moment to present itself.

... huh. That phrase could use some work!

[ ] [CALL OUT] Try to get Freddie to show herself. Convince her you want to talk- which is true, since you're a little fuzzy on WHY this is happening.
[ ] [GIVE IN] Leave the doors open, and don't check your cameras- because there's something Freddie doesn't know about you.
[ ] [OPEN IT UP] You've got one card up your sleeve, and this is a good a time as any to unleash it on this dream world.

Like Urist and Rokko's glitch abuse, it's definitely possible, although it's probably not safe to do for extended periods of time.
>>
>>40713525
Still, much like dwarf fortress the ability to whip out at least a small mechanism has its uses.
>>
>>40713487
It might still exist in the current build.

It uses very few resources but there is already a system in place to shut it down after a few seconds, simply turning everything off.

It's not very useful for automated machinery due to directly needing to start it AND because of the lag after it gets shut down before you can try it again, so not many people use it at all for real projects.

>>40713525
at least, like Rokko's Thunder Beam, performing it does not require extracting vast amounts of mass/essence from within herself.

Then again, without any ammo at hand....
>>
>>40713575
I don't suppose minecraft allows some variant of unintentional trigger mechanisms, like if you stepped on a certain square? Because I'm thinking traps.

>[X] [CALL OUT!]

For as long as you've remembered, Urist always made a point of going all in for vengeance, and sometimes a little revengeance. Back when you blew up her home for the first time, she sought out payback by trying to knock your block off! And she shows even less restraint toward monsters and elves.

She's got a good point where monsters are concerned, but when it comes to other people, you think you're a little better about forgiving and forgetting any slights against you! Usually, anyway. It's not like you make a habit of sneaking around with buckets of lava ALL the time. Only when you get /really/ mad at someone for going to far. And it's probably safer than exploding when-

A-Anyway, what you're trying to say is that you're not actually that mad at the person who's trapping you here. Especially not after seeing what she's really like.

You clear your throat, looking around the cramped little office- it's the only range of movement that's allowed to you. "I know you're here, Freddie. I think it's time we had a little cha-"

A bloodcurdling scream at your right ear makes you turn away, although you still catch a glimpse of worn purple fabric before you shut your eyes. Soon enough, the noise shuts off as quickly as someone turning a faucet, and you take that as your cue to look back up- in the place of the broken animatronic nightmare waiting to puree your eyeballs, there's a small girl dolled up like she walked straight out of an old-time speakeasy, fussing with the large puppets on her han- where her hands would be.

"S̕-͏S͢or̷r̸̶y͘ ͜'b͞҉̡ó̶u͘͝t͝ ̵̵t͞ḩ̷a͘͟͡t̡,̕͡͡" Freddie drawls, clipping the purple bunny to her belt (are its eyes following you?) and swapping in the hook-handed fox. "Bon҉ńi̵è's͏ a͠lways҉ ͢be͝ęn ҉t̀o͘ǫ ̛q͞ui͜cḱ ̀oǹ th͞e dr̕aw.͘"

"That's okay!" you chirrup back- although you have to clamp down on what you were going to add. Can't let the cat (sss-) out of the bag too early, after all. You can't help but take in Freddie's appearance, frowning in honest consternation. She's always been skinny, and there've always been shadows under her eyes, but she looks sort of haggard and drawn. "Working overtime again? You've got to eat more to keep your strength up, you know."

Freddie shuffles her feet defensively. "I͡ ͢h̨ad͏-"

"Pizza and cake are /not/ properly filling food! Come on, Freddie-"

The fearmonger shakes her head, sobering up faster than you'd have liked. Dang- looks like you won't be putting her guard down this time. Whatever's going on up in the real world, it's got her on edge. "No͢. Ain'ţ ͝nob̴od̛y͞ g҉ot ̀ńo ҉tim̢e fo̶r̡ ͢t͝h̷i͠s," Freddie growls. "Y̸o͢u̢ ̡cal͘le͞d́ ̨m͝e̕ ҉h͏er̨e̷.͞ I҉'m re̡ady͟. A̢re͞ yơu?"

Okay, THIS is new. "For what?"

"J҉o̢in us.͠ J҉oin͟ ̡Arf̨oir̸e."

...

You're honestly surprised at how NOT surprised you are. But maybe that's not too out-of-the-blue, given everything that's been happening so far.

Of course you're going to refuse this invitation! Arfoire was the one who caused the most devastating Console War ever seen in Gamindustri, she's the antithesis of /all/ the goddesses, she's evil in a bottle, and even the /thought/ of helping her sends shivers down your spine!

You almost do the heroic thing and belt out a resounding "NO" right then and there, but a sudden memory makes you hesitate, so vivid that you can almost smell the earthy sent of Urist's sixth hole-in-the-ground bunker.

"Okay. Right. Tell me something," a younger version of your big sis is telling a younger version of you. "Let's say you see a pack of monsters up ahead. What's the first thing you-"

"Rush out and hit them in the face just like you always do, Urist!" younger!you chirrups.

"NO," Urist growls, her unkempt hair seeming to bristle like an angry cat (sss-). "Don't follow my example. You just- you're not bugged like I am, okay? I can't control myself, if I get too close to an enemy, I-"

She takes a calming breath. "You can choose. Choose to hang back, alright? Hang back and wait. Don't be a fucking hero and rush in and die."

... you shake off the memory. Okay, Urist. You'll- yeah. It takes you some effort to keep your face neutral, but it seems to work, at least going by how Freddie's shoulders relax. You hem and haw a little. "I dunno. You've locked me up in here for all this time, and you always look so worn down. Is it really worth it?"

"L̢ook͠,͏ it's͟ w̵h̛at͝'s̶ ͏b́es͞t͞ for̢ ͟you̡,̴ ̴o̴kay͝?̨" Freddie starts pacing back and forth, fiddling with the ends of her overlarge sleeves- which isn't easy, since she's absentmindedly using her puppets' fanged mouths. ͞"I̕t͞'s͜ ̛wha̧t'͘s b̨est ͝fo̴r a̧l̸l͏ ҉of͠ ̵u͢s͠.͘ Y҉o̴u, ͡me,̸ t̡hat ̴crazy d̸w̨ar͟f ̢frie͟nd ͜of̧ ͢y̡ou͘rs- who̶a,͟ e̵ąs͏y͡!!͏" she yelps, jumping back from you.

"Ć'mo͜n, ̕n͝o, I ͝did͝n̛'t̕ ͝me͢a͘ń i̛t li͘ke th͡a̡t! I j̢u͘st m̀eàn͢t-̢" Freddie starts talking faster. You stop hissing, the floor dropping out from your stomach. Suddenly, you don't feel much like grinning anymore. "What does that have to do with anything?"

"That's not true! My friends and I and a lot of others fit in just fine..." You trail off, feeling a stab of guilt as your mind treacherously offers up Urist as a counterexample. Freddie doesn't notice- maybe she's beyond noticing.

"Yeah̨?͝ W͡el̶l̸,́ f̢o̢r ̷every̨ ͠su̶c̨c̀èss̛ ͝stǫr͜y͢ ̨lìke ͝you,̡ ͝th̸ęr͏e's̢ ҉som͡e͟one̵ ļike me͢.̵ ͞C͠an͏'͜t ̸f̀igh͏t̡, can̴'t ͏m͠a̛ke anyone ͘h̵a͘ppy̛..." >[X] [BREAK OUT]

Okay. You've learned- well, you can't say you've learned ENOUGH, since all this stuff raises more questions than it answers, but you've picked up on some pretty important things! Enough things to make your head spin from all the sudden plot twists, and- more importantly- things that CPU Green Heart will know what to do with, once you find her (and get out alive)!

And to do that, you can't just sit here and wait for big sis to come bust you out, because while you trust in big sis, Freddie is here right /now/. Even if all she's got is jump scares, she can do some pretty horrible damage with those puppets.

Even so... "Um, Freddie? You might want to stand back."

THAT gets her to tense up again. "Wh͘at͢? ̵W͢ha͢t'ŕȩ y͡ou ̨ţa̡lk̵in̴ģ ͟ab̛o̕u͝t? ̀I'̢ve̵ ̕got ́ýou ͘l̸oc̛k̀ed͟ dow̢n͠,̨ wh̀a̧dd̛ayá ͜t̶hink͞ y̸o͢u're ͝goǹna̶ ̶ev̧e̴n ͟/d̸o/͢?̕" And just as you half-expected, Freddie takes a step closer to you, as if to emphasize her point.

You give her your biggest, sunniest smile. "Well, you didn't actually knock me out or hit me until I went unconscious, right?"

The fearmonger frowns- she's probably remembering how you thanked her profusely for treating you so gently upon capture. "Y̷ea̴h̕,̸ but-͟"

"And you only took the items I was holding in my hands, right?"

You give Freddie just enough time to stare in dawning comprehension before you mentally nudge your inventory and upend all your water buckets out at once, filling the cramped office from zero to six feet of endlessly flowing water in half a second, the fearmonger's terrified screams coming out in a stream of bubbles as she's swept into the hallway with the puppets shorting out on her hands-

- and you wake up. Saying that you wet the bed would be the understatement of the year, since the whole room's under three feet of water and rising. Looks like emptying your inventory's buckets in the dream realm affected the real world, too!

Swimming out of your makeshift jail cell costs you precious seconds, but on the plus side, Freddie's nowhere to be found as you kick open the door and squelch out into the hallway, leaving the waterworks to keep cascading behind you. You wish you still had your diamond sword, but beggars can't be choosers- pulling out your backup iron sword makes you feel a /little/ safer, at least!

Looking around, you find yourself in Leanbox's Central Basilicom. It looks almost untouched since you were captured, but it's strangely empty- as you make your way toward the nearest exit, you see no workers, no priests, not even a single Ran Ran. It's just you, the high walls, and the stained-glass windows, filled with bygone heroes staring down at you from above-

There's the sudden smell of burning brimstone, and then a pair of hooves begin erratically clicking against the hard floor- you know who it is before she speaks up, and she isn't even bothering to hide herself. Dang it! You thought all of your captors' helpers had left, that's why you chose /now/ to break out-

"Hah. I /knew/ Mistress Arfoire should have let me watch over you," Keeper's voice is all honey and lilacs as she strides out from behind a pillar, holding her whip taut between her hands. "She shouldn't have bothered trying to keep you whole and intact, but I suppose even the greatest of villains suffer oversights every now and then. Isn't that so, 'little sister'?"

You're surprised you can even feel your skin crawl, because you're so scared that you're suddenly freezing. You've seen what Keeper can do, and what she's done to make herself... /stronger/. It's not even consolation that she's got a limp and half a horn missing!

"What's the matter, 'little sister'? Cat got your tongue?" She leans on the word, grinning that fanged grin as a little hiss escapes your clenched teeth. "I don't know why Urist even bothered with you. But then, she can't even handle-"

You're saved from your own sudden anger when a section of the wall to your right explodes inward! You're a little less sure if you're saved when the hallway suddenly doesn't seem big enough to contain the representative goddess of Leanbox in full battle regalia. Her eyes glow the same color as the various panels on her revealing armor, a terrible green light that cuts straight through the swirling dust.

"Stand down, Mojang," CPU Green Heart(?) says quietly, twirling her spear- the motion leaves ghostly afterimages in your eyes. "I-"

...

You are Urist Twelfthbay, and you're about to strangle a fucking fairy. What the hell? Why'd she stop?? You've gotta know what happens next so that you know if it's time to start /screaming/ and making for the Leanbox Basilicom like-

"T-This isn't right," Histoire whispers hoarsely, ignoring you completely- her wide eyes are staring into the middle distance, and she's got a hand to her temple like she's holding back a migraine. "What's happening? Why did-" The tiny blonde looks up, as if seeing you for the first time. "I'm sorry. I have to go. None of this should have happened."

With a flutter of her wings, Histoire lifts off, her book floating gently out from your hands as well, and she prepares to leave you here-

>[X] [WAKE UP]

You let Histoire fly up and away. Your self-preservation instinct tells you that, in your current state of mind, you'll probably accidentally /squeeze Histoire into a fucking pulp/ if you try to grab her, and gruesomely butchering oracles or history-recorders or whatever isn't a good way to live a long life here.

So instead, you channel all your terror, your frustration, and your WHY into ripping yourself out of the dream realm and into full wakefulness, using so much damn force that you flip yourself off the bed and onto the cold dirt floor.

"GUYS," you roar, leaping to your feet and slamming your fists against the neighboring bed- and it's empty, where the hell is Shovel Knight!? "GUYS," you try again, spinning and leaping onto the opposite bed and almost breaking your fucking kneecaps against Rokko's armor and aaaaaAAAAAA-

Rokko helps you back up off the floor without comment, although she blinks a few times, either getting the sleep out of her eyes or staring down at you. There's a moment of hesitation before she pipes up in her trademark electronic stutter. "Q-Query: is that the nightgo-"

YES. Yes, it's the nightgown that popped up in that stupid shared hallucination! But that's not fucking important! You found your friend and she's at the Basilicom and CPU Green Heart's there except it might be Arfoire who's over there too and she's gonna do something really goddamn stupid and-

"I-It's a. Very nice nightgow-"

Goddammit, FOCUS, Rokko! We're all going over there to make sure Mojang doesn't /die/! Right now!

"Affirmative," the Blue Bomber drones, slamming her helmet back down over her blonde hair- oh, of COURSE she takes off her helmet when she sleeps (robots sleep!?), but not the armor that /nearly broke your kneecaps/- before following you out of the bunker at a purposeful clip. Seems she's finally shaken off that start-up lag or whatever it was back there.

Shovel Knight's already filling in the campfire's ashes, precious gems sprinkling against the ground with every dig of her trademark weapon. "I heard you from out here!" she says cheerfully, clearly one of those hated species of adventurer known as a 'morning person.' "If our quest begins in earnest, then we have no choice but to proceed to-"

To the Basilicom. Right now!

"Ah... before that, would you not like to change-"

Right this moment!

[ ] [TAKE THE ROADS] Guaranteed to be the fastest method of travel, but you'll end up cutting through population centers- not a problem, if you move fast enough. As a bonus, you can even restock on supplies!
[ ] [CIRCLE THE TOWNS] Take the roads when you can, but cut through the wilderness to avoid towns. This is slower, but you're not dealing with any misguided Leanbox troops or, Armok forbid, zealous Leanbox adventurers!
[ ] [UNDERGROUND] Strike the earth, and make straight for the Basilicom through the dirt. This is the slowest, but not by TOO much, since you've got Shovel Knight with you, and you can avoid awkward questions- assuming you don't bump into monsters!

Does being sober give us a bonus to berserking in combat?

Okay, I've cut it as close to the wire as I can, and I need to run!

Next thread will most likely be next Saturday or Sunday morning, and a more definite time will be going up on https://twitter.com/BlorpQuest. Questions can go here or ask.fm/BlorpQuest, as usual!

Thanks for participating, guys, and I hope you enjoyed it! Sorry for the odd scheduling and the shortness.

I think if Urist ever got to the point where she was bone-dry sober, she'd just lie around going "don' wanna" to everything not related to getting more alcohol, and even then, it might take someone pouring booze straight down her throat (to forestall her from just rolling or crawling toward the nearest bar).

Of course, all the points in time immediately BEFORE going bone-dry sober would be chock-full of interesting and horribly violent moments.

Sooo... hold off on the alcohol until we finish the job for maximum !!FUN!!?

I think I see what Arfoire is aiming at.

Leanbox's purging system is online and will activate in a day or two if I recall, expelling or killing the enemies of Leanbox from the country. However, if Arfoire or one of her followers has taken control of said system, the parameters could be changed to expel those who don't follow Arfoire. Therefore, all that would be left on the island nation of Leanbox would be those who follow her, such as wayward Freelancers like Freddie. This could be what Freddie hinted at when she said Arfoire was going to give them a home.

Of course, she won't stop at taking Leanbox. But she doesn't have to tell these tricked Freelancers that, now does she?
