You're not sure which is more shocking, now that you think further on what Er Yin-sensei said.

The fact that your priestess might vomit lava from morning sickness, or the fact that she has a child and her master is the one mentioning it to you.

“You and I are going to have a long discussion about not telling me important facts I need to know, Er Yin,” you murmur softly, your eyes boring into hers. She completely ignores your glare of course. “It would be very unpleasant if I was put into a position to rescue a son or daughter of my priestess without adequate warning.” Jinyuu-onee-sama pulls out her fan and waves it close to her chest, suggesting you might be pouring it on a little thick. Sadly, you're not joking at all. “In the mean time, I'll see about getting a crucible or a smelting pot for the restroom.”

Er Yin-sensei smiles and shakes her head. “My Precious Gem's son is quite safe and you need not concern yourself with his situation. He serves under a powerful Kami.” That is a relief, and you are still going to discuss this at a later date with her.

“More to the point, I do need to know more about Chinese demons. They are apparently really tough fighters.” After you wandered in hell for two hundred years, you've somewhat refined your techniques. Akari-niji-chan wouldn't be a match for you any longer, other than her elemental potency. “If the others are tougher and smarter, I could be in some real trouble.”

Jinyuu- has the grace to actually look embarrassed, in addition to indicating her embarrassment with body language by shifting her fan to breeze along her face. “A Chinese demon is less a creature than it is a shell which is filled with demon essence. Demon essence is often referred to as 'dark Chi' or 'negative Chi' but in truth it is neither of those things. It is simply demon essence.” Your sister lowers her fan to her lap and Er Yin straightens a bit, her stiffness more a symptom of her pain than actual muscle fatigue. “Breaking the shell spills the demon essence which then dissipates, though if it remains on the flesh of natural creatures – immortal or not – it can cause harm.”

“The demons are classified under a numbering system, from one to one hundred, in terms of their power. The demon child Fenghuang-san was a Level Twenty-Five demon, and not easily defeated even by experts without great assistance or actual weaponry.” Closing her eyes, Er Yin considers carefully. “I would say with some certainty they would send nothing higher than a Level Fifty, because anything stronger would be unable to leave the lands of China, and anything weaker than Twenty would not survive outside of China.” That's....kind of a relief? You're not sure yet.

“This essence....how would it harm someone like my niji-chan or my samurai?” You don't plan on anyone else getting close to them, including Er Yin.

“It is an acidic poison, but slow acting on the surface. In the mouth, nose or eyes, it can be quite bad. As long as it is washed off quickly, there is usually no issue.” Er Yin is very confident, and you trust her judgment. “Injected....that is a much worse problem. To a human, it is instantly fatal, as with animals. In a spirit-child or a creature of spirit, the demons can command them, so long as they are weaker in demonic power than the demon in question.”

“And if Kiki-hime or I were injected?” Like your wife, you now possess remarkable healing abilities. Unlike your wife, yours are not nearly so predictable, given few people survive eating mermaid flesh to begin with. There's a lot of unknown territory.

Jinyuu-onee-sama speaks first. “The poison would be slow to effect her, and she would eventually neutralize it, but a sufficient dose could last for hours or days.” You respond with a nod. “Because demon essence is not truly a physical liquid or substance, our powers over poison would not have any great effect on it, though we could isolate it and excise it.” She means cutting a vein and forcing it out with your blood. That always sucks.

“You would have nothing to fear from it. Demon essence cannot interact with your body as you are now, not without spells to enhance it or weaken you.” Jinyuu looks at Er Yin in confusion, then back to you. Then she LOOKS at you and slowly rises to her feat, her fan lowered to her side.

You smile sweetly up at her, your eyes closed cheerfully. “Well, that last swim, I met some friends of Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado, and, with this and that, Kiki-hime seems to have convinced them I was worth sharing a gift with.” You drop the facade and your tail thumps the ground. “Though, really, that's not a kind of sashimi I ever want to try again. It shouldn't smile when you take a bite.”

Your onee-sama sits down slowly, her eyes still wide with shock. “Aka-chan....you have....changed, immensely.”

Giving your sister an agreeable nod, you shrug mildly. “Kiki-hime wanted to level the playing field, I suppose. She was very intent on making sure that I managed this, and to be honest I let her talk me into it.” Though, that's not entirely factual; Wood Eyes had a lot to do with it. “On the other hand, I have help with this, so you don't have to worry about me quite as much, Jinyuu-onee-sama; Inau-kun is guiding me through it quite well.” And hopefully, Kiki-hime is guiding her through a few things.

“So....you have given up hiding anything from your enemies, Aka-chan?” She still sounds worried but Er Yin-sensei has an awfully smug expression.

Er yin-sensei leans forward. “Understand, Ryukusa-sama, that you can be killed by the removal of your head, the total annihilation of every part of your heart, the total destruction of your body, and by the destruction of your soul. Without your mikoto, if this happens, then Ame-no-Mikado-no-Horobi would be locked away forever in Yomi.” Her Void Eyes open, and you see an image in your mind of an explosion across the monochromatic spirit-scape of a Barrier, utterly eradicating everything in a five block radius of the city. “If you were truly killed, the effects on the spiritual landscape ~whether or not you are in a barrier~ will be devastating.”

I tend to work nights as a chef, hella hours. between that, not using twitter, and generally just not lurking tg much (i'm usually occupied either gaming or archive trawling on suptg) I very rarely post in quests I enjoy, and usually just read the archives of. You look at Er Yin steadily, though your heart is tight and your pulse fluttery. The image she's given you is pretty appalling by itself, but what she said to you about how you could be killed permanently....that truly makes your blood run cold, and it wasn't all that warm to begin with. “You're not just speaking about the one in my body are you, Er Yin-sensei?” Your voice comes out weaker than you would ever care to admit. There isn't too much that can scare you aside from yourself, but that would be worse than dying.

“No, Ryukusa-sama. Inari is your heart, and without her you will die as surely as if your head were taken off.” A brief image of Wakaba's head falling into her arms flashes through your mind, and you understand at once that you could survive that – only true beheading will kill you permanently. “She is the part of you that makes Horobi more than Susano-Oh, even though Susano-Oh is a great Kami.”

Your sister nods slowly, understanding Er Yin's words though you didn't realize she knew about Inari's unusual incarnation. Perhaps she didn't and just put it together. Water dragonette after all; it would make sense.

“I've got plans in the works still, things forming that I'm not yet acting on.” They're mostly just ideas floating around, but they'll come together too. “Besides, I've been informed that promises mean something much different to me now than they used to....but I am still treating those promises as if I'd made them as I am no. The people I made those promises, as myself and as I was and am, mean everything to me.”

You stand up and reach out, caressing one of Er Yin's strange horns gently, causing her to sigh and giving her a little relief from the tension and pain. “Inari is not a weakness. Inari is my greatest strength, and nothing will take her from me.” You don't promise her – you make the promise only to yourself, silently. Well, maybe to Amaterasu-Omikami, but she's already heard all of the promises you made, after all.

“AHAHAHAHA!!!”

“....I believe that is my cue to go check on Yuuhi-chan,” you mutter to your sister, who is looking behind you somewhat alarmed, and Er Yin-sensei, whose tail has risen up and looks about ready to strike. “Thank you, Sensei-chan, onee-sama!” You kiss Er Yin firmly and quite thoroughly, as your sister hides her face behind her fan, though she is chuckling softly. Er yin reciprocates with as much intensity as you give to her, and you shiver, remembering how it felt to be held by her.

That date can't come soon enough.

Turning, you join the rest of your family and friends – not really servants, so much – as Yuuhi is holding a flaming line of rapidly burning marshmallow as long as your arm. Kiku-chan is looking somewhat alarmed, while Shoko-san is burying her face in her hands. Kiki-hime, Akari-niji-chan, and Yui-niji-chan are all giggling, laughing, or smiling, while Inau-kun is watching with a rather confused expression.

You walk over calmly, and gently take Yui-niji-chan aside. “If there is anything you may be able to do for Er Yin-sensei, please do so, Yui-niji-chan? If not, that is okay; I'll talk with Akari-niji-chan about the kappa tonight.” Yui nods and slips away silently, and you manage to make her yelp as you stroke her tail with yours. She looks back, blushing guiltily, and you smile at her.

Akari-chan smiles at you, her carnelian eyes sparkling, and Kiki-hime smiles, holding on to Inau-kun's arm and winking at you. Looks like things are going to go well there, in her estimation. You pat Shoko-san on the back as you walk up to Yuuhi-chan.

Yep, I know. I've even ran a couple of quests myself a while ago and it's not easy!

I just am a voracious reader, I go through roughly 500 page novels in 4 hours or less, and as far as quest thread stuff goes, Magical Girl Noir Quest's first hundred threads or so took me like 4 days, and that's reading every post not just the QM's.

My appetite for reading just makes me super impatient, well that and ADHD, lol. Went through everything you had written in tager quest and this quest all the way up to the duel with Goto in a single sitting.

You study the glorious amount of flaming marshmallow that Yuuhi-chan has achieved and she smiles at you brilliantly. You gently wave at her wand of flaming sugar, and the flames go out as one.

“Aawww.” She doesn't seem incredibly disappointed though, and she quickly brings the semi-solid mass close to her face. Before it actually gets there you place your hand on hers and slow the process down so that it doesn't slop over her hair and down her back in a molten mass of agonizing taffy.

“While eleven marshmallows is an impressive feat, Yuuhi-chan, if you keep flinging them around, you're going to get that in your tail, and it will never come out.”

“Baka fox!” Kiku-chan yells quietly. “I am not a fireplace!”

“Yes, but you lit them all up all at the same time!” Yuuhi exclaims happily. “Now I know I can find a three foot long chocolate bar and two ginger snaps that are just as long, and make the perfect gingersnap cookie!” You duck as she turns to hug you and avoid a hair-full of the horrific mass of crisped marshmallow shell hiding molten horror within. Yuuhi chugs you tightly and you gently relieve her of the weapon of hair destruction, and she doesn't seem to notice in the slightest.

The thought of that much sugar in her system makes you shudder.

She leans back, and you have to fight the urge to kiss her on the lips, because she's got the most adorable look of confusion on her delicate face. “A what?”

“S'more, like please may I have some-more,” explains Shoko-san patiently.

Yuuhi looks aghast. “Somebody already INVENTED THEM?”

Akari's melodious, beautiful laughter fills the air. Even nearby beach-goers turn and look at the sound. Kiki-hime and Inau-kun are equally amused, while Kiku-chan looks like she's on fire again. Shoko just sighs.

“You need to go, ~now~.” You turn to look at the blue-eyed albino figure of school-girl Rie.

Kiku-chan manages not to scream in terror, and she is quickly scooped up by her little sister (that is so odd) and buries her face in her sister's shoulder and hair, already beginning to hyperventilate. You do notice that Inau-kun steps between Kiki-hime and Rie, despite the fact there are three others already in the way. More importantly, Akari-niji-chan steps behind kiki-hime, protecting her from the other side. Shoko-san looks resolute and Yuuhi-chan sighs and sets her marshmallow skewer in the fire pit regretfully.

For your part, you're torn. You would like to hate Rie-sama so much for interrupting this precious time, and yet you know she would only be here if you and yours were in terrible danger. The two black spots where her eyebrows would be remind you that she's probably the most dangerous thing on the beach aside from you and Peta. You go to one knee before her and give thanks to your family's guardian spirit for her timely arrival.

Rie's eyes get huge, the dark slits of her pupils widening into pools of darkness.

Rising to your feet, Rie watches with that strangely shocked expression as you turn to your family. “YUI!” She's there almost immediately and you don't even give her time to say 'yes aniki' before you're giving orders. “Fly to Peta-chan and Chi-chan, tell them something is happening.”

“Military vehicles, special defense forces,” Rie helpfully supplies. They have to be coming in by the road; the design of the bay prevents anything else since infiltration through the trees would have been noticed by any number of people amongst the trees making out.

Toshio Ryoga, it has to be. “That, go.” Yui is on her cloud and gone before you finish turning to Shoko. “Take Jinyuu and Er Yin to Ryutaku-ji by cloud.” Shoko is moving even as you turn to the others. “Akari, Inau, Kiku, hime-duty. Meet me on the far tip of the bay. No killing humans, anyone or thing else is given one warning then dealt with.” You gesture once; Akari is to kill any real threats, human or otherwise. She acknowledges in the usual way, which is not to do so.

“Yuuhi, with me.” She has her nodachi out and stands at your left side and just behind you.

The others move quickly, and are out of sight among the happy crowd almost immediately; Shoko whips past you on the cloud, carrying your sister and Er Yin to safety. You turn back to Rie and bow politely, she merely watches you, her eyes huge and dark with pupil. “Rie-sama, how much time is there before we are overwhelmed?” Yui is already back, and lands crouched at your feet, looking up at you expectantly.

“There's alots of dangerous humans and nogitsune-borns here. Enough, I guess.” She stares at you and then moves a little closer. “Will you take care of my cat youkai, Ryuu Ryukusa?”

“Yes,” she says, and closes her eyes, leaning forward from the waist, hands tucked behind her back as though to kiss you. It takes every ounce of your willpower not to move, because you sure as heaven do not want to offend the God's Eye Nekomata who has twice now helped your family without prompting.

She doesn't kiss you, something you have no fuckin' idea about how you'd react to. Instead her nose just barely brushes yours. A cat-type kiss.

And now you're in that shadow edged Barrier she walks around in. Alone, with her, and about seven or eight hundred cats with shining eyes. You look around, and see that every pair of eyes is fixed on you, including Rie-sama's, and all of their eyes are shining brightly, also including Rie-sama's.

Their eyes are shining because you are glowing.

She blinks and glance around, noticing there's some activity over by the beach-house. Looks like they've arrived. “Sooo....did you two notice anything? And where's Rie?”

Yuuhi-chan pipes up. “I noticed Rie-chan asked a weird question and then touched your nose with her nose and then you looked spaced out and the nekokomatata smiled at you and said-” At this point she takes a breath. “-thank you Ryukusa-chan and then she was a cat and walked off that way and then you asked if we noticed anything and asked where Rie was.” To your surprise and great relief she does not start repeating herself.

Yui glances to the side worriedly, and licks her lips. You reach down and stroke her horn, and she relaxes immediately, looking up at you. “Um....you possessed a lot of cat youkai and you look really weird. aniki.” Not for the first time you wonder exactly what it is Yui-niji-chan sees when she looks at the world. Your lack of a reaction seems to encourage her, and she speaks up. “You seem okay though, and it shouldn't be dangerous.”

Well, apparently being delicious to youkai comes with special privileges. Like possessing the very weak ones. On the other hand, they belong to Rie-sama and not you, so you just ignore them for the moment. Also, you think you went way too easy on her previous clan. “All right, what about the evil masterminds?”

It says something that Yui-niji-chan doesn't ask who they are. “Chisato-sama said she would buy your people all the time she could with Peta-sama's people's help.” There are several sharp cracks, and a few dull thumps, and you can see smoke billowing near the beach house. Which is immediately followed by two sky-shells going off far above your heads – fireworks. “Aniki, this is going to get very bad very fast, with all these nogitsune-born and human soldiers here,” Yui-niji-chan says, worried, but calm. “Especially when the Yakuza set off fire-crackers and other gun-sound fireworks.”

You have to agree – it is definitely a matter of when, not if.

Yuuhi-chan is nodding off, and then she perks up. “There's a half-demon moving in from the north, running on foot, headed to the meeting point.” you look at her, and then realize that she almost always nods off just before the shit really hits the fan. Except you don't think it's merely sleeping anymore. She's projecting her spirit, consciously and on purpose. Well, you hope consciously. Then again, she's so weird about that sort of thing.

It's probably not Taisho himself. He's way not stupid.

“Get behind me,” you murmur to Yuuhi and Yui alike as you turn to face the beach house in the distance. They immediately do so, and you close your eyes.

With great age comes great power. You might not have spent the two hundred years in real time, in a spiritual place, but it wasn't a Barrier like the ones spirit-children use either. So you were forced to learn how to use your abilities in a hostile environment, much like the real world is.

Or rather, was.

You can feel the power of Water responding immediately, and where before it took a little effort to 'flood out' an electrical system in a few cars that were relatively close, now you could probably take out an entire grid. You don't need to, of course; you turn that power not only against the twelve trucks and large vans the self-defense forces and the police brought....you soak all the powder in all the guns on both sides of the conflict.

You leave the fireworks and tear gas alone though.

The effort is minimal, and it doesn't even diminish your Shen significantly. Yes, you've grown a lot. Yuuhi-chan and Yui-niji-chan are staring at you like you spouted a second head. You're fairly certain you haven't. “All right, yui, can you carry all three of us?” Yui-niji-chan hesitates, and then looks at you and nods. “All right.” The shocked look on her face is immediately replaced by a determination that will move mountains.

Yui-niji-chan whips up a cloud and Yuuhi hops onto it, kneeling low. You step on, and she raises the cloud with ease, the shock of THAT almost making the cloud dissolve underneath the three of you. You smile to yourself, suspecting that you could turn Yui-niji-chan's life upside down with just a few words of encouragement at the right time. She takes you up swiftly, and it is mere seconds before you spot Akari-niji-chan and the others.

The nogitsune-born and their companions (unless it's the other way around; you really need something to call the new group) are making it easy for your family to get through the crowds, using magic, threats and brute force in equal measures. You see the demon-child – a kitsune, but not entirely a kitsune. Her hair is blonde, for one thing, and her eyes are green. She has fox ears, but emerald-like horns that swoop in from behind her head. Strangest of all, she's carrying a metal shield as well as a straight sword....a European broadsword.

Fuck – she's one of Toshio Ryoga's experiments, and she closing in on Kiki-hime fast.

Ryukusa won't try something like that without asking the sorceress - she knows she doesn't know enough about that kind of sorcery to risk playing around with it. Playing aroudn with experimental elemental magics, she has no problem with, she understands the elements. Playing around with youkai that you've apparently possessed? Not so much.
