Hey all, thank you for dealing with all of the crap I put you through just to get a thread going. Not sure how long this one is going to run seeing as how my sleep schedule is shot to hell, but I’ll do my best to give you a good one.

Also, woo 20 quest threads.

>Fate Point:1
>Money: $135
>Equipment: Tier 2 Assault Rifle. Tier 2 Armor (+4 wounds). Tier 1 Pistol. Standard Ammo: 1. Tier 1 Knife. Tier 1 Bandolier. (Carry Capacity, 1 Ammo, 1 Misc) Tier 1 Rucksack. (Carry Capacity 4.) Quality Lighter. Tier 1 Med-kit. Tier 2 Med-kit. Tier 1 Toolkit.

Your name is William or Billy, depending on who exactly you ask. Currently you are asleep, dreaming as the memory of the girls you rescued runs through your head, mixing with the visions of the ones rescued when you were taken from the compound. Fear and hate are the largest parts there, reminding you of…of things you don’t want to remember.

Then comes the face of Marie, smiling at you, saying thanks for rescuing her at the campfire. Confusion reigns in your head, you don’t know why these things are coming to you, not one bit. Finally they end, fading out until something else comes into view…

>Cath holding you on the bed.
>Morrigan sitting next to you as she explains she’s not going to shoot you.
>Mary in the bathroom, naked and talking in the kitchen.
>Bellona on the bed, asking you to sleep with her.
>Other.

You find yourself dreaming back to the time when Cath brought you back to her room after you worked out together. You remember her patting the bed and sitting in front of her. You remember her putting her arms around you and remember the noises she was making as she did so, the gentle rocking motion between the two of you. Finally it clicks with you why you’re dreaming of Cath after dreaming of the women.

The women did that to each other, you remember seeing some of them doing it to the ones who were scared or crying. You remember how it calmed them down, how they seemed to stop crying after they put their arms around them for some time. If Cath did the same to you…was she trying to make you feel better? You weren’t upset though…so she was upset. But what you don’t know is why she was upset, you never did figure that out…

Your dream is broken as somebody shakes your shoulder. Your eyes pop open, hand moving towards your waist before you see that it’s Sarah.

“Come on Will,” she says, “It’s time for breakfast before we leave, Morrigan wants to make it back to Fort Riley tonight if we can.”

You nod, standing upright and getting your things ready as Cath comes over and hands you a slightly warmed portion of food. You nod to her, your thoughts drifting to your dream once again as Morrigan rounds everybody up.

“Alright,” she says, clearly nursing a headache but not bad enough to keep her from getting on the road, “We’re going to go ahead today, Koko’s wagon is slow and she said she doesn’t need us anymore. I’ve gotten the rest of the payment from Mars, so we’re all $250 dollars richer. I want to make it back to Doc’s so we can spend some of that tonight. Now let’s go.”
>>
>>40649889
With a nod everybody mounts up, horses having been gathered from where they were earlier. As you head out of Salina, you see a few people wave to you, including a patrol of Mars. They’re probably going to leave later since there are more of them and they have trucks. As you ride you notice that everyone is spread out, you could probably talk to somebody if you wanted to.

As you ride through the plains with the rest of them, you notice that Bellona is lagging behind a little bit. Part of it is likely because Morrigan always makes her guard the rear of whatever you’re doing, but you see…you need more words to describe what you see. But she doesn’t seem very happy about something. You remember last night, wondering if that had something to do with it. She did seem rather eager to sleep on that bed but you didn’t let her.

Dropping back on your horse, you find yourself riding next to Bellona without anybody mentioning it. She looks up to you as you do so, clearly wondering what you’re doing.

“What’s up Billy?” she asks you, her LMG slung so that she can pull it up if necessary.

You pause, still not exactly sure how to talk to people about things. Yesterday though…yesterday the lady by the campfire seemed to like it when you asked if she was ok. She said thank you and said it made her feel better. So following that…

“Are you ok?” you ask her.

She blinks at you, clearly surprised that you asked her the question.

“What brought this on?” she asks you in return.

“You look…upset,” you say, “Last night you wanted to sleep on the bed and I didn’t let you so…” You stop, unsure as how to properly frame the question to her.

Bellona looks at you, a thoughtful look on her face. “I’m fine,” she says to you, “you were right, it wasn’t safe to sleep there, no matter how soft that bed was. Don’t worry about it.”

She smiles at you, but you can tell that it’s…not real. It’s like Koko’s smile, empty of anything real. But Bellona told you that she was fine…

>Ask her if she’s really ok.

Bellona is clearly not ok, normally she is one of the more expressive members of MMS, but right now she’s faking being ok to you. You aren’t sure why she’s faking being ok, especially to you, but it’s clear that she’s thinking about something else at the same time. Normally you try not to get in the way of anybody, but for some reason you think this is important.

“Are you really ok?” you ask, looking at her as your horses walk together, several dozen feet behind everyone else.

You see Belona’s face flicker in surprise once again, the mask she put on over how she was feeling slipping and then completely sliding away as she looks back at you.

“No Billy…no I’m not,” she says, turning to look forward again, her eyes looking towards the horizon as you ride, the sun high up in the sky and beating down on you as your horse sways underneath you. You wait, not knowing what to say once Bellona admitted to you that she wasn’t ok. That seems to be the right response though, as she eventually begins speaking to you once again.

“I was almost like those girls in the hospital,” she says to you, her eyes still looking forward but not actually looking at what’s ahead, “I was almost locked in a room for the rest of my life and…” she stops, turning to look at you. “Well you still don’t know about that I guess, but let’s just say it would’ve been really bad for me.”

You nod, watching her as she speaks to you.
>>
>>40651670

“It was my fault,” she says, “It was after the fall, after things had stopped working like they were supposed to. I tried to keep living like things weren’t different, like I was still safe.” She stops and shakes her head. “I wasn’t. I trusted the wrong people and they caught me. They did things to me, just like what happened to those girls. But they didn’t break me, didn’t make me give up. They only had me for a week before I escaped.” She lets out a shudder. “I killed my first man then, stabbed him right in the throat with a piece of metal I’d hidden.” She pauses, looking to you.

“Do you remember the first time you killed someone Will?” she asks you.

You do remember, you remember that charge. But do you feel like telling her?

You nod to her, your mouth opening almost before you think about it.

“Yes,” you say to her, “I remember.”

She looks at you, clearly wondering if you are going to continue.

You do, telling her the story. Not the whole story, but how they lined you up, how you were made to go forward with the other boys. You tell it exactly how it happened, how you saw the other boys ran and fell as well, how you tripped into the hole with the man and how you picked up your gun and shot him. Your voice is soft as you tell it, watching her face tighten as you finally finish with how you threw up after you shot him.

Bellona looks at you for a little while after you finish telling your story, her face still tight. You look back at her, wondering why she seems so upset. Maybe you shouldn’t have told her the story?

“You’ve never told anyone that before have you?” she asks.

You shake your head no, nobody else has asked you the question before so there’s no way that you could tell anyone.

Bellona shakes her head.

“That’s one hell of a story Billy,” she says, turning to look forward once again, “But you wanted to know why I was upset right?”

You nod to her.

“Well, like I said I was almost like those girls,” she says, “So when we rescued them from the hospital I…I didn’t take it well.” She takes a deep breath, shaking her head. “That’s why I went and got drunk, I didn’t want to think about it. I pretended like everything was back like it was before, that a nice bed and a night with somebody in my arms would make it all go away.”

“But you reminded me that everything’s not ok Willl,” she says, “Which isn’t bad. Pretending like everything is normal is bad, worse even, than remembering that things are screwed up. I have you all around now, so things are looking up, even if I can barely find shampoo or hot running water anymore.”

She pauses and then looks forwards to where the others are.

“…Thanks for asking about me Will,” she says softly, “It doesn’t make everything better but it helps to tell someone.” She turns to look at you again. “Did you want to ask me anything else?”

This feels a lot like the calm before the storm, and there certainly seems to be indications of darker times ahead.

I'm not bothered at all by the slice-of-life nature of things currently, we've slowly been getting a feel for all of the girls. All the better for when people start dying, and Will has to fight hard to hang onto those he cares for.

My (wild) guess is a lot of this is buildup to shit getting really dark.

You shake your head no at first and then stop.

“What’s on your mind?” asks Bellona as you stop.

“Why is shampoo and hot water so…important?” you ask, seeing as how she seemed to find it incredibly important when you helped her with her hair and she just mentioned it again. You’re still not completely sure what shampoo actually does besides make bubbles and smell nice and whenever you need to take a bath or shower cold water is enough, though admittedly it is exactly that, cold.

Bellona looks at you again and this time she laughs, actually laughs as if something were funny.

“I guess they’re not really that important compared to food or guns,” says Bell, “But they’re nice things, luxuries if you will. They help me feel like a girl again instead of some brute.”

You pause, looking at her. You aren’t exactly sure what a luxury is, but in the context of nice things it’s probably like blankets and new clothes.

“Aren’t you a girl?” you ask Bellona, your head tilted a little bit in confusion.

Bellona looks back to you in return confusion but then smiles again. “Oh Will,” she says, moving her horse a little bit closer to yours, “That’s not what I meant. Of course I’m a girl. But things like a good bath and smelling nice can make a girl feel…more girly, feminine if you will.”

You stare at her again, still confused. Asking about shampoo and hot water has quickly led you to a place you know nothing about and Bellona’s explanation doesn’t seem to be helping at all.

She sees your confusion and shakes her head, turning back to look back to the front again.

“Never mind Will,” she says, “The explanation isn’t important. Just remember almost any girl would love a hot shower and some soap to clean off, even if she wouldn’t admit it to you,” She takes a look up to the front, where Morrigan is riding, “Even Morrigan and Nem.”

You nod at that, it’s something you can remember even if you don’t exactly know why it is, like how trucks work or a bullet fires. From there on you and Bell don’t really talk about much, though she seems to be in a better mood than before. Shortly after, Morrigan calls a quick stop for lunch and checking the horses. You eat and check your horse, getting some of the dirt out of its hooves.

Eventually you start riding again, having quite a bit to think about since you talked with Bellona. You could still ask somebody a few questions though, you’re still pretty far away from Fort Riley.

>Just ride back, you’ve had plenty of conversation for today.
>Talk to Morrigan, she seemed eager to get back.
>Talk to Cath about that day on the bed.

With all this socializing and high rolls for comprehension, are we getting any closer to not being so autistic in our interactions? Are we actually autistic, or just uninformed? Is Will unintelligent? He seems to file away different things he hears from other people and treat it like gospel, so I feel like he shouldn't be so spaghetti for long.

He's learning. Autistic people are almost always in their own little world and Will is cautiously expanding his knowledge in a world he was always in, just never really explored.

Alright, looks like we're going to try and talk to Cath this time.

>>40653186
Will doesn't have anything mentally wrong with him besides being severely maltreated as he went through most of puberty. So uninformed. He's not unintelligent, as demonstrated by his ability to work on fire-arms and relatively quick pick up of basic first aid and medical knowledge.

He's mostly lacking a sense of "self" which he is slowly developing thanks to being pushed into it by MMS and various outside factors.
>>
I'm just saying, does he have zero critical thinking skills? I think I've seen him make his own conclusions based on existing information alone, but that should happen more often than "occasionally" when you're being given so much new stimuli without all the previous risks, like beatings or malnutrition.

With all the talking you did with Bellona, still floating through your head and that mention of how talking about it helped, you wonder if Cath would feel better talking about that day at when she asked you to get on the bed with her. You decide that at least talking to her about it couldn’t hurt, since she seemed to feel better afterwards. Cath is somewhat in the middle of the column of riders, behind Morrigan and Nem but in front of Sarah and Bellona. You fall in with her as you ride, the clop of hooves the only thing that disturbs the quiet for some time. Cath is always quiet of course, but you seem to get the feeling that she’s enjoying just riding with you. Of course you do have a question to ask her, but a few minutes of riding won’t hurt.

Thankfully she eventually looks over at you, her eyebrow cocked as if to ask you if you wanted something from her. You give her a nod, causing her to turn and look at you fully instead of just looking at you from the side.

You look at her, struggling with how to bring up something that was so long ago. Eventually Cath tilts her head at you as you remain silent, causing you to look forward again before turning and looking at her again.

“You were upset when you asked me to get on the bed with you,” you say to her quietly “Why were you upset?”
>>
>>40653763
Cath’s eyes widen as you ask her that question, before they turn dwon and look away from you. You can see some redness come onto her cheeks and she mumbles something, but you can barely here it, much less make something out of it. You look away, wondering if you’ve made her mad or something before you see her turn back towards you.

“Hurt…didn’t protect,” she says softly, just like she did back when she hit you.

But that doesn’t tell you very much, just that she wants to protect something.

>Ask her why she wants to protect so badly.
>Ask her what she wants to protect.
>Leave her alone, she doesn’t really look like she wants to talk.

As Cath looks down at the ground between your horses, you wonder what she wants to protect. You open your mouth to ask her, but she shakes her head no. She doesn’t say anything, but the look on her face and the movement of her head is pretty determined, meaning that you probably shouldn’t ask her right now even if you want to know. Instead you just nod at her in understanding, causing her to give you a bit of a smile before she goes back to looking at the ground while you ride.

You look down as well, wondering what could make Cath be quiet like that. Though if she doesn’t want to talk about it you suppose that you shouldn’t ask too much even though Bell said it felt better to talk about things. Maybe it’s different for everybody?

Most of the rest of the ride back to Fort Riley is quiet, with Nem and Morrigan talking occasionally to each other and Bellona making a few calls forward of her own seeing as how most of what you talk about has already been discussed. But as the night starts to get closer and the sun begins to dip towards the horizon, you realize that you’re actually really close to Fort Riley.
>>
>>40654619
As you ride closer to the town, you’re about to crest a small ridge when Morrigan suddenly raises her hand and stops everybody.

“Off the horses now,” she says, sliding off hers quickly and unslinging her rifle before heading towards the top of the rise. Everyone quickly follows suit, the horses mostly staying where they are as they’re rather tired and perfectly content to not move any more.

Morrigan makes it to the top of the rise first, crawling the last bit of the way there. Nem is next, then you and Cath, everyone following suit as she does so. Finally Bellona and Sarah climb up next to you, everyone staring at the bottom of the ridge.

You look down upon the camp in the middle of nowhere at the bottom, over a hundred men in dark clothing camped together, nearly all of them clearly armed or going about some kind of business in a military like manner. They have some sentries posted, but all of them are in the direction of Fort Riley except for a few closer to the camp.

“Well fuck,” whispers Morrigan.
