Second Verse, Part 11

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134. For at least one more night.

Christmas has come and gone with joyous celebration in the halls of Ramla. Often spilling out into the streets of the town and drawing the common folk into the celebration.

You are Wilhelm, Lord of Ramla.

And your time has been spent alternating between plotting with Melisende, and bedding her. You found her an active bed partner, riding you to pleasured exhaustion. More than her body you appreciated her mind. It was like a steel trap. You coaxed from her more promises of aid when the invasion of Ascalon should arrive, often either a game of shatranj or in the euphoria of pillow talk.

She did not solely occupy your attention. A letter had come for you from your betrothed Ioveta. You felt some guilt for bedding her sister when you considered her note upon your bedside table. You'd yet to open it. The guilt did not last when Melisende would walk in clinging shift to your side. You felt an indulgent beast, when you were with her, in the best way. Without her, in the worst.

Your usual bed companion kept the chambers you claimed for yourself. Chihirizahd had a lonely Christmas, only the company of the Arab physicians, who would entertain her with stories. Old Ibrahim would lend her books to read, which you would often find her pouring over with a hungered intensity. If she begrudge your dalliance with the Queen she made no sign of it.
>>
Snow had come. Not heavy but enough to add some hint of home to the surrounding country. Your sister tried to instruct Sabeen in the proper method of a snowball fight, eventually drawing a list of women to ambush the menfolk. She delighted her ambushes of Hugo most of all. He seemed to take it in good spirit, and return as he received, often with the help of other boys and young men. It was fast being called the Battle of Ramla, so fierce did the powder fly. Your bastard brother was judged the victor after the fact, much to your sister's annoyance.

If any noticed that you and the queen kept intimate company they did not talk of it to your face. Officially you were conferring on the state of the realm, and educating Melisende in Imperial politics and German custom. This was not entirely wrong. Certainly, Melisende bearing a second child was for the good of the realm.

Nor were you the only one sneaking to royal chambers. A chance meeting in the hall had seen Solomon exiting Hodierna's chambers, cheeks flushed. You could keep one another's confidence in all things.

It was when New Years Eve came Melisende she informed you she would be leaving on the morrow.

"Do not weep," she teased as she drank a cup of water, dressed in only her white shift upon the bed.

You grinned, running a hand up that shift to draw a hot drawn breath from the woman.

"Mayhap you will weep, knowing what you cannot find in Jerusalem," you replied.

"Worst it will be when I must bed my husband, to keep the charade," she said, holding your hand in place, "My eyes have been opened. It is not easy to go back to that. Like flying a kestrel after having an eagle on the wrist."

You closed your eyes and growled. The tease.

She did not remain to satisfy your grumbling. She dressed and departed in the earliest hours, leaving you alone. With Ioveta's letter.

You took up the letter. It was signed with your name in careful, Church tutored hand. The seal was the seal of Jerusalem. You broke the wax with your thumb and unfolded it.

She wrote with firm hand, and no corrections needed.

'My Wilhelm,

Long have these nights been since last we saw one another. The days are years without you. When we found one another I was a different girl, living a different life, content with different things. A novice on her way to sisterhood and eternal chastity. Holding only the love of Christ in me. A meek girl. You opened my heart to another love, a mortal love that is none the less past eternal. You took me from the path of god and made of me a sinner. Perhaps you have set me on the path of damnation. It is a path I gladly walk if you are by my side.

My nights are filled with anguished thoughts of you. My flesh becomes weak, my constitution feverish, naught can expel this fever save the thought of you.

If you should fail in your quest, I do not care. If you should fall from grace, I do not care. I care only that you survive. I care only that you return to me whole and happy. Be it as victor or vanquished.

I would be a peasant wife for you. Wear canvas and string. I would be your whore.

But most all I would be yours.

I love you Wilhelm. I am yours in life, and the life beyond life. I am yours in sin. I am yours in grace and disgrace. I wait for you.

Forever, always,

Your Ioveta'

You closed your eyes and placed the letter upon your bare chest, on your heart.

A knock came upon your door.

"M'lord?" Rosalie's voice.

You open your eyes.

"Enter," you said.

Rosalie slipped in. You hadn't kept much company with the stern faced seneschal, but had no complaints to the manner she ran the household.

"Arrived this morning," she said, "Riders from Jaffa."

"Malik?" You sat up. It would do your heart good to see your friend.

"Irishmen," she said.

That put a crinkle in your brow. What cursed business had the Irish in Ramla?

"Shall I deal with them, or...?" she looked over your state of half-dress. The sun had yet to entirely rise.

You folded Ioveta's letter.

You came down in unbuttoned doublet, Damascus sword in hand. Outrage burned in your gut that men would arrive, armed in the night, without informing you.

You found them in your courtyard, presented and filed. They looked a ragged crew. More pirates than soldiers.

Your own men were being assembled by Tancred and Solomon, filing from the barracks.

"I present to you Prince Domnall Ua Conchobair, cousin to High King Tairrdelbach of Ireland," a herald stood with scroll unfurled, standing in your courtyard. They had come with men under arms, spears mostly. The one named Domnall stood with sword at hip, long and black hair kept from his head by a simple leather band. He had scars on both cheeks, a strong jaw, and smug look about him. "With him is Prince Oilath, son of King Diarmait Mac Murchada of Lienster." A red haired man, younger and fuller bodied, with a flaring ginger mane of hair and shaggy bead both that made him look much like a great ginger lion. He wore a battleaxe, and was scarred upon the arms.

They kept company, but you could sense the two were not friends.

Behind you came your knightly retainers. Sir Hector, Sir Etienne, Hermann and Orlando. They were armed but unarmoured.

Slipping up beside you was Melisende. She wore little against the chill. Her white shift barely cloaked by a loose silken robe. She stood with you upon the tower steps, looking down upon the Irish with wry amusement.

"Hail William, Lord of Ramlah!" the herald said.

"What business have you here?" you demanded.

The dark one looked you over with gold blue eyes, and hooted some gibberish at the herald to translate. The other, Oilath, just laughed.

"We're after a pair of stray gels," he said, rubbing his nose, "Word has it they were t'be found here." The dark haired Domnall shot Oilath a jealous look, lost to foreign tongues.

"It is as Prince Oilath says," the herald added.

You glower at the Irish princes.

"What damned business is that to me, at this hour, with no forewarning?" you demanded. You felt your men as much as saw them bristle forward. The black one, Domnall, looked about in fearful confusion, hand to his hilt. Oilath had a nervous tick n his eye, but his smile did not slip.

"Your lordship, we've been sent by fathers to take custody of their gels, and to return them home to be wed," Oilath said, "If we have been rude my apology. Amends shall be made, but these are slippery creatures. Forewarning might've forearmed them."

"I don't give a damn," you said, and pointed to your gate with your sword.

"Make camp outside the walls of my town, and come again in better hours with more respect in your voice. Be thankful it will not be at blade point."

Oilath nodded and signaled his men. Domnall tarried with a frown until his herald provided translation. He cast you an offended look, drew himself up, but none the less departed. The Irish troops filling through your gate. You had a mind to whip whoever was on watch for not sounding alarm.

When they were gone Melisende put a hand to your arm. "How very kingly you seemed," she said softly before retreating back within.

You knew the girls these Irish princes wanted. Maggie and Etain.

"Fetch them," you snapped at Rosalie, though your anger was not meant for her, "Drag the girl from your bed if you have to, and find Maggie. Bring them to my study. We must talk. Now!"

Desmond looks like a stickler to the rules and must be a nag but he is the one who wishes to extend god's love to all, christian or otherwise.

Marian appears to be more laid back but more intolerant of other religions.
>>
You stalked back into the tower, mind filled with ill emotion.

In your study you found Chihirizahd, carefully putting away one of your books. She saw you enter and dropped into a bow.

"Master," she said in meek voice. It gave you a hot flash to your loins, which only irritated you further. Well you liked her body, but now was not the time for it. You lay your sword upon your desk and pulled her to her feet. She seemed a little spooked by your anger. "Are you well master?" she asked, tenderly brushing the bristles growing from your cheeks.

You closed your eyes, felt her hand upon you. "No," you said, "No, I am not." Then you forced a smile. "But a little better for your company."

And she smiled, kissed you on the chin.

Soon Rosalie came with the Irish 'gels'. She left them in your company, but hesitantly as her hand lingered on Etain's shoulder. You growled. You had no time for Sapphic nonsense.

You looked at Maggie. "Oilath Mac Murchada," she grasped at her chest, eyes gone wide. You looked to Etain. "Domnall Ua Conchobair." Etain looked to the floor, her body trembling.

"They're lookin' to take us home," Maggie said, tears building in her eyes.

Etain shook her head, muttering in that gaelic tongue. And she strode with purpose towards your window. Chihirizahd grabbed her, adnd the girl struggled to reach her suicide.

"I'll not go back!" she bawled, "Not to that!"

Maggie only looked to you. "Please don't let them take us," she said, "They've every legal right but...claim we are your prisoners, your hostages!"

You took a deep breath. Etain collapsed sobbing into Chihirizahd's arms. Maggie stood tall, but her lip gave a slight quiver.

"Maggie, you have your sense. Tell me what has you so fearful of your legal guardians. Hugo told me you were kept at St Anne's to await your marriage."

Maggie looked to Etain, who shivered in Chihirizahd's arms, and bit her lip nervously.

"If it were just me I'd have no major problem with it. Oilath is a mule, but he's a good mule. If he's come for me it means the Norwegian lecher has finally agreed to my uncle's terms. I like it here, love it even, but I've a duty to my lord. Etain though..."

Maggie frowned. "If it is Prince Domnall who has come it means her father is dead, along with him their clan. She's the last of her line and Domnall...Domnall means to have her. Either wife or concubine. Or even just to end her on the road and extinguish her clan for good. And as he is kin to the High King it makes it legal. But it doesn't make it right."

You consider your sword upon the desk. "No, no it does not."

"Leinster and Connacht are not friends, but me and Etain, we're friends. I'll not let Domnall take her, on my life," she said it firmly. You knew she meant it. To have a friend like her...well you had some, and knew how lucky Etain was. Maggie bowed her head. "Will you do the same m'lord?" she asked

What if we tell them they slept with moslems?
Might take a rep hit but I doubt they'd want them then, and the girls seem desperate enough to do almost anything to avoid being sent back. We can also use this as reasoning to hold them and "punish" them.

Anyone want to comment on this?
>>

You've been on a convent, say you took vows and came to help prepare things for the Queen.

Very, very bad idea. They might just kill them for that.

tbh we should just let Etain jump. There's nothing good awaiting her

Maggie is welcome to stay too if she wishes but Etain is not to be harmed, if nothing else Solomon owes her that much

Suggestion for marriage candidates: Every single bachelor knight in your company (Sir Etienne, Sir Hector, Sir Hermann, Sir Orlando) and other unwed men (Solomon, Hugo, Jacques, Franz Judd)

If that's the road you want to take.

I can't see any of the knights approving of the match. So Orlando it is!

I hate not having a good choice here. One is the right thing to do the other potentially gets a few troops for Ascalon. Which is always good. Just have them leading the more dangerous operations during the siege.

"What if you were married?" you asked, "Wed already and you would be under the authority of your husbands."

"Husbands, and who is worth marrying here?" Maggie asked with a wry smile, "Aside from yourself m'lord."

You went to Etain, placed a hand upon the fey girl's shoulder.

"Who would you wed?" you asked.

"Rosie," she said so foolishly, but then she found a sensible answer, "Sir Solomon...if he found me pleasing."

You knew he found her fetching enough. You drew Etain from Chihirizahd's arms, gathered her up and sat in your chair. The girl still sobbed into her hands, you pulled her tight and rocked her gently.

"Chihirizahd, please get Solomon, Father Desmond, Sir Etiene and Orlando. If you see Melisende, send her as well."

Chihirizahd nodded and set away. You saw stern pride on her face. Pride in you.

You looked to Maggie. "Is this alright with you?" you asked.

Maggie grinned. "No man ever asked me what I thought about bein' married. I suppose it trumps a Norseman old enough to make me as much nursemaid as wife."

They were assembled in pieces. Solomon came armoured, ready to fight. Etain threw herself into his arms. Etienne and Orlando arrived together looking grim. Last was Desmond, the Queen and Chihirizahd.

"Solomon," you said, "That girl you hold has a death sentence upon her head. That gibbering fool this morning is her executioner."

Solomon's eyes widened, lips curled back. "I'll kill him," he said.

"Others will come behind him," you said, raising a hand, "Do you wish to protect the girl you hold?"

Solomon looked down on Etain. She was like a fearful mouse within his arms. He looked back at you. "Yes," he said.
>>
>>40640797

>>
>>40640813

>>
>>40640804

You nodded. "Father Desmond, I'm sorry to call on you in such a matter, but we have a wedding to perform." You nodded to the couple.

Desmond drew back in shock. "But who stands for the girl's family, who gives permission to this union?" he asked.

"I do," Maggie said, "I'm her kin, she's none other living." Bold, brave Maggie. She grinned at her friend. "Ye've netted a big one, an' a good one too."

Desmond looked from you to the Queen. Melisende shrugged. "Let it be so if they wish it," she said.

"Solomon?" you asked.

He considered the pale, dark haired lass. She looked up at him with tender, desperate eyes. He nodded. "Yes," the word was hoarse in his throat.

You slam your hand down. "Done! The rest is paper work, father?" you looked to the priest. He stuttered a union upon the pair, and it was sealed with a desperate hard kiss, Etain pulling herself up by his neck 'til her legs swung out under her. It ran deep. Solomon grabbed her by the backside, lips and tongues thrashing.

"That is more than enough," Melisende chided with amusement in her voice. They're lips broke apart with a wetness. Etain blushed at her husband. Solomon still frowned, a little uncertain.

You look to Maggie, and motioned to her two options. She looked them over uncertain. Orlando still seemed half-asleep and not quite aware of what was happening. Etienne looked about with irritation.

"It's your choice Maggie," you said.

She looked over the knights presented. Etienne just stared glumly, while Orlando took a more admiring view. She looked over them, but her eyes were full of disappointment. She wanted something else. Someone else perhaps.

Maggie shook her head. "I'm sorry m'lord, I jus' don't wish to be wed," she sighed, "Mayhap holy vows are in order."

You looked to Melisende. The queen took a deep breath. "Well I suppose she might be placed under royal protection, until such a time as she can be placed in a convent. A woman has certain rights in Jerusalem."

Maggie knelt before her. "Your majesty," she said, "I owe you so much. My life."

Melisende beckoned Maggie to stand. "Enough foolishness, stand." Maggie got to her feet. "I would be a hypocrite if I stood by and watched another woman suffer an unwanted marriage."

That was settled at least. You drummed your thumbs upon your desk. Now to break the news to the Irishmen.

You stamped your hand.

"Gather the men, Solomon," you said, "We've unwanted men to see off."

The Nubian grinned, hitching his thumb on the scabbard of his shotel. Etain grinned as well, relief and pleasure as she clinged to her lord husband's arm.

You sent for Hugo. The boy had slept through much of the excitement. He brought you your armour, and then went to ready your horse. Other servants and groomsmen rushed to do similar biddings. You marched to the courtyard. Melisende and Chihirizahd following you. They watched you mount your horse, and take up spear. You looked to your lovers and gave them an expert flourish. In this moment you felt a credible warlord.

Solomon mounted his destrier beside you, and Etain came running, leaped up onto his back like a mad little cat.

Tancred brought out your footmen, and your knights and lancers assembled. You saw Sabeen check her helm strap just as she mounted.

The queen's men remained out of it, but Sir Raymond rode up.

"Keen for a spot of amusement," he said, "God forgive me Wilhelm, but Ramla is frightfully dull." He laughed and rode ahead to do a circuit of the town, his cackle belting forth. There was a touch of madness in that man.

You nodded to Tancred and he raised his spear. A drum began to beat, and the men began to march. Thirty and three men on foot, armoured in maile, armed with spear and shield, all helmed. They were a frightful sight and made a frightening noise. Shutters slammed shut on Ramlan houses as you passed. The gates of the town were ahead, and encamped were the Irish. You could see you had stirred them like a hornets nest, they rushed to take up arms, re-don armor.

You did not wait for them. Your knights and lancers formed, and charged at their party. None struck killing blows, but sent the men scattering. Only Oilath, with axe in hand, and Domnall with sword remained standing. Domnall cursed at his fleeing men, then glared up at you.

"I warned 'im, I bloody warned 'im," Oilath said.

He lowered his axe and gave a sigh.

"You wanted the girls," you said. You pointed to Solomon, and Etain who grinned from behind his shoulder. "Well that is her lord husband." Domnall looked about with furious incomprehension.

"And Maggie?" Oilath asked, "What of my cousin?"

"Holy vows and royal protection," you said, and levelled your spear point down at him, "I suggest you go to Jerusalem, and lodge a complaint with the Queen."

Oilath exploded with laughter, clapping his knee. "Oh good god this is just like her," he ran a hand through his beard, showing crooked teeth in a grin, "Always more trouble than she's worth. Blight of my eyes."

His companion was not so good natured. He bellowed at Solomon, waving his sword.

Oilath cocked his head in a way much like Maggie would have. "Domnall demands to fight," he said, "For he claims Etain as his property. A proud idiot."

You looked over at Solomon, who looked at Domnall as if he were so much scum on a boot.

Hes a existential threat to Etain he was to wipe out her bloodline, and basically wants her dead.
>>
"Solomon, this man wants to fight you," you said, pointing to Domnall.

"Good. I mean to kill him," he replied, swinging down from the saddle. Etain took his seat, and bit her lip with excitement, peering forward eagerly. Solomon's sword came out like a serpent, with a clean snikt.

He pointed to Etain. "I will speak slow, so you understand," he said, "That is my wife. Mine." He pointed to Domnall. "You are a corpse. You are just too stupid to know it. Do not worry, I will teach you."

Domnall belted back something in that monkey hooting tongue before leaping forward with his sword outstretched, long greying hair billowing out behind him.

Domnall leapt, a curse on his lips, blade arcing out.

A shift of Solomon's feet. A flash of Solomon's sword. A single strike.

Domnall staggered past Solomon. Cursed him in that alien tongue.

You were shocked by what you saw. His sword arm came off at the elbow.

That was not the shocking thing.

A thin red line bloomed across his face. Beneath his eyes, and over the nose. And the top of his head, it slid from the bottom half. Landed in the dirt with a wetness. And Domnall continued to stand a moment. You saw his eyes blink in that half head on the dirt, roll back.

That was when the body collapsed. Crumpled into a heap of human meat.

Solomon reached down and pulled the top half of the head up by the hair. He'd not cut a single strained. He looked the man in his dead eyes, matching that dead blankness with his own bored expression. And then threw it aside as if Domnall were nothing.

As he walked back to his wife he flicked his blade clean and returned it to his scabbard.

Etain all but panted upon the saddle she warmed for him.

Hell on earth, you had half an erection as well.

You looked down to Oilath.

"I don't suppose you have any objections?" you asked.

The man looked dazed. Scratched at his wirey ginger mane. "Fucking none. Christ in heaven, Domnall was figured one of the greatest warrior in Ireland."

Solomon rode away with his young wife into a nearby palm grove. No doubt to consummate the marriage. She was already fumbling at his belt. Solomon didn't even blink.

"Well," you said, "This isn't Ireland."

I arrived too late to propose the idea, but I'd have liked to have given Maggie to Oilath, since she was the one willing. While Solomon's prowess is amazing, we've made another enemy in killing a prince.

We may, in fact, still be able to do it to prevent hard feelings from turning into conflict. I like Maggie, a lot, but people are going to die over her.

They're Irish. They're not going to back down because they lost a single man. In fact, because he was important, they just might try to fuck us.

And it's not just the Irish, Maggie's set to be wed to some dude in Norway. How many northerners do we have to piss off? We've got to compromise at some point, or else we'll lose more.
>>
So how badly did we screw Ireland over by killing off the Prince? Wiki shows someone with his name being born in like 30 years?

>>
>>40643628
Nothing we can really do about that. The race will be on and we can faff around the start line all we want in a attempt to not make him angry or we can make a run for the win.

Gaza is currently ruins I think. A bunch of earthquakes hit the Levant in the late 11th century and devastated the area. It's way Ramla is such a shit hole.

The whole reason they have castles there is to push back the raiders and store supplies. Everyone will go if they see enough siegecraft.

We would have to return Ramla, at least. And be king of the hill somehow to deserve a city (claim the holy buildings, make some authority surrender, etc)
