Second Verse, Part 10

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Wilhelm, Lord of Ramla.

And it is Christmas, or near enough. Normally such would be a joyous celebration of the birth of Christ. A Mass, a feast, some celebration. But this Christmas was different.

To begin with it is your first Christmas as Lord of Ramla. Secondly, the locals don't seem as enamoured with the holiday tradition as your native Germany. Thirdly, and most anxiety inducing of all, you were hosting Queen Melisende and her entourage. Which included her sister Hodierna, Sir Marcel of Jerusalem, Lord William Bures, Father Desmond and Marian of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and Sir Raymond of Tripoli. With a troop of twenty five men-at-arms besides.

Missing was your betrothed, Ioveta. Kept in Jerusalem as nursemaid for her sick nephew, the crown-prince.

It was not a grand host, but the concentrated presence of royalty and royal friends made enough of an impression that you hoped your household would deliver adequate service.

You had just left Queen Melisende to freshen up, giving her your quarters for the stay. She had made some heavy flirtation that had left you wondering just what her intentions this Christmas visit held.

Anyroad, you had other guests to attend to.

As you made your way back to the hall you past your squire Hugo speaking with his friend Jacques. What they spoke of you couldn't guess, but Jacques was laughing at Hugo's clear discomfort.

When last you had seen Lord William it had been at the trial. Your trial, but through your oratory skill had turned into the trial of King Fulk. You remembered William Bures had been one of the first to stand in outrage against the king, and spoke of Melisende and her father Baldwin.

The time before that however he had been the one to make your arrest, dragging you through the streets of Jerusalem like a common criminal, promising you an end at the drop of a rope if you had dared touch Ioveta.

He waited with the soldiers, directing them to the barracks. Big, grey, balding on the pate, he wore maile and a sword like others wore common garb. The man had a thin eye for you as you approached. Though this was your land, still Bures outranked you. Constable of Jerusalem and with a lordship as well, he was not the sort to give his trust nor one to forgive quickly.

But when you offered him your hand he shook it, three firm pumps with fingers like iron.

"Lord Wilhelm," he said, still gruff in the voice but not unhappy.

"Lord William," you replied. The two of you shared a name but naught else in common. Bures was an ugly man of sharp moods.

"Good of you to host us," he said, licking dry lips. His eyes were on your courtyard, the gate, the land beyond. He had an eye for such things. Practical, engineering patterns laid out, everything reduced to simple mechanisms of moving parts.

"I can hardly refuse the Queen," you replied, "I owe her everything."

William looked you up and down. "Your first service s to Lord Hugh, is it not?" he asked. It was, by feudal custom. "Will he be joining us?"

"M'lord has other guests to entertain," you replied smoothly. William gave a jowl heavy frown.

William flexed out old, cramped shoulders. "Jerusalem has long been plagued by foreigners competing for high station," he said, "And are quick to betray their oaths to achieve it."

Whether this was meant to nettle you or not you showed William no offence.

It would take more than that to conjure your outrage.

He turned with a nod for his own thoughts, and directed a question at you.

"If quarrel was had between Hugh and the Queen, both of whom you owe loyalty, both of whom have rewarded your service, which side would you take?"

>>
>>40632907
We're a low-ranking count. Our immediate liege is our superior. We do not get to approach him (or the queen for that matter) as a peer for mediation.

Ideally a bishop would mediate in that situation. That's what the church is for. It's outside the feudal power structure.
>>
>>40632907
We are a lower ranking lord and expected to provide support to the one we are loyal to. Not to sit behind preaching about what they should be doing. That is how a Feudal society works. Our Liege Lord and/or Queen grants us privleges and land we return it with support of troops.
>>40632942

"Is quarrel expected between them?" you asked. If it was, it was all news to you.

William laughed. It wasn't a pleasant sound. "None can say what the future holds. Any that do is either a prophet or a liar. And since the age of prophets is over, that decides it. Ten years from now Melisende might war with her own son. Hugh has a claim to the throne. A strong one. If he wanted to, he could mount an effort."

William licked his lips again. "He'd fail, of course. But he could still try."

You offered William a drink from your skin and he took it with a nod. "I think you misjudge Count Hugh," you said, "He loves Melisende."

William snorted. "That's why I worry. Love can take a foolish turn. He may well think rebellion is the way best to win her hand. Take her crown, annul her marriage and force her into wedlock."

"You are paranoid," you say the words with no sting in them, but you had to think it was far fetched.

William shrugged. "Such thoughts keep me up at night. I have no wife to while away the late hours, so my mind turns to the realm. I would see it safe from all threats. Inside and out, and before they can be truly threatening. What of you Lord Wilhelm? Would you do the same?"

You thought about his words and could not entirely disagree.

"I suppose, at the very least if I were Constable, that yes. I would do the same."

William grinned. He tapped a finger upon your shoulder.

"And that my German friend, is why I don't entirely trust you. You have a game I think. Some gambit you are looking to play. Whether for the good or ill of Jerusalem is the question. And if it is for ill, be certain that you will find in me an enemy."

He cuffed your shoulder and walked away, shaking his head and chuckling to himself.

You did not think Bures an enemy, so long as you did not give him cause to see you as an enemy. That he had told you his intention so plainly was reassuring in a way. If he were to stab you it would be in the chest, not the back.

The Constable returned to the division of the Jerusalem troops. Some of the soldiers had gone to great their friends in your own garrison, soldiers from Jaffa and those gifted to you by Melisende. It was your local Ramla troops that seemed apart. Unbloodied beside their comrades, not yet proven shoulder to shoulder in the press of war.

Time would fix that.

You returned to your hall. Sir Marcel had his servants assisting the two priests with their goods. Hodierna you could not see, though no doubt she was making her presence known. Sir Raymond sat in the shadows, drinking watered wine. The man wore wry amusement like a cloak, looking on the world as if it were a jape.

His eyes followed Maggie and Etain as they passed, chatting away about some local gossip.

"It's getting too fucking crowded," Franz was at your shoulder, eyeing the crowd, "Too fucking crowded by half. If I knew you'd be hobnobbing this much I'd have fucked off in Germany. Taken a job as some Imperial game keeper."
>>
You chuckled. The old Jew was not being serious. In the last half a year he'd been grumbling about such, but you knew he enjoyed the sun, and the company of a matronly widow in the town itself. Your men were becoming enmeshed into the local scene. Tancred had even brought out his family. All save the eldest boy, who remained in Jaffa serving Count Hugh. You expected his next two boys would eventually join their father under arms in your service.

They had his build, and long arms.

"I'll leave m'lord for now," Franz muttered, "M'lord must not be seen keeping such lowborn company as this Jew." He had called you such in half-mocking tone. 'M'lord'. In public at least. He walked away, a noticeable hitch in his knee.

You did have other guests to attend to.

Fathers Desmond and Marian were setting up a small altar in your hall. Something your holding had long missed.

Priests win.

Give me a second.
>>
The two priests were Father Desmond and Father Marian. Desmond was a bald Irishman, broad chest and tall, wrinkles forming around his eyes and lips. Marian was a Frankish-Levant, born to Jerusalem. He was not so tall as his Irish companion, but still had his hair, a fading brown. Both were of a like age, some where over forty. Currently they were erecting a cross in an alcove of your hall. A small altar, a shrine of sorts. The cross was heavy and ornate, metal wrought with gold.

"A gift from the Patriarch," said Desmond, his voice only carrying a little of that Irish brogue.

"He thought Ramla may need some of god's attention," Marian added with a small chuckle. It seemed the aged Patriarch had not entirely forgiven you for leading his pupil away from holy oaths, but if his distrust involved such generous gifts you could stand to invoke some more.

Marian dusted off his hand and offered it to you. "I'm Marian, he is Desmond. Our thanks for your hospitality."

You took it and shook. "My thanks for your company father, both of you. My hall is open to the Church."

"Be careful, many a priest will leave you empty of larder," Desmond said, "Though I noted you have a pair of St Anne's runaways in company. The Connacht girl, and the lass from Dublin way."

Etain to the first and Maggie was the second.

"Good of you to see both girls well sheltered, who knows what evils they might find otherwise," Marian said, though his companion eyed your hall with disapproval. No doubt he reckoned it ungodly.

"They're a pair to be sure," you replied.

Desmond sat before the cross. "Well as we might get this over with. The Patriarch has instructed one of us to remain in Ramla, as per your letter. The choice is yours. Myself or Marian here. Fair warning, Marian snores like a saw edge on metal."

Marian rolled his eyes.

"We've time for such things later," you said, inviting Desmond to stand, "I would like to know more of you both before making such a decision. This is my soul and the souls of my family we are speaking of, though I'm sure you are both fine men."

"Fair enough," Desmond said. Marian helped him to his feet. "A man shouldn't rush to god blindly, but consider each step ahead of him first."

Marian inclined his head. "Well said," Marian replied. He thumped you on the shoulder. "If you've need of us we will likely be milling around this area, bothering the flock with the word of god."

"If they choose to listen," Desmond added, "Some try for forced conversion, but Christ can only be accepted with an open heart, which begins with an open set of ears."

Marian rolled his eyes. "Five 'our father's' and be done with it. The faithful will be faithful, the others will not. Never mind the busy work."

They began to walk away, and you heard Desmond remark to his friend - "You should not be so callous in your words brother, all are due God's love and our attention. Be they sinner or saint."

You considered the cross they left behind. It truly was a finely crafted piece. You ran a hand over the edges, feeling the indents under your skin. A thing to leave behind you, for all to remember through out the ages. The Patriarch had done you well, even as he made his displeasure known. Perhaps Ioveta had been in his ear, singing your praise and settling some of his misgivings.

The day was crawling on, and a night of feasting would be due. Still you had time to call on one other, guest or companion.

As the day is closing you search for Princess Hodierna.

She has made a home in her quarters, directing the servants Melisende had brought to attend her, and keeping with her a number of lower born ladies in waiting. Still nobility, but of no significant lineage or holding.

When you rapped upon the door with the back of your hand she turned from her French barked directions to see you, and offered a smile.

She and Melisende were much alike in face and feature, though Hodierna was of fuller a figure. There was much debate about which was the more beautiful. Hodierna wore her hair bound up in a complicated, knotted braid. For a woman of twenty-four, and so lovely in appearance, there must be a story for her spinster status.

"Welcome to Ramla princess," you said, "I hope you find the lodgings suitable."

"I feel most welcome, Lord Ramla," she replied with a curtsy, "And the rooms are adequate. Perfectly adequate."

She offered you her hand.

You lowered your head and pressed your lips to the back of her milk smooth hand. Hodierna gave a slight breath as you straightened up, a smile on her face like a cat that had itself a bowl of cream.

"Impeccably mannered, why you'd hardly be thought a German the way you carry on," she said, playfully batting your shoulder.

She had once called you a savage with anger in her eyes. Now they were soft and warm, blue much like Ioveta's. Without that anger you could see more her loveliness. Smooth and youthful, honey haired and milk skinned. She stepped with a bounce that spoke of playfulness that you well liked, in character and form.

And the way her eyes traced your form, not at all bothering with subtlety, you could see she enjoyed the sight of you as well.

"You make a much better second impression, scrubbed of all that prison dirt," she said, and then tapped your chin, "Though you could stand a beard. Men should not be as hairless as a girl."

You chuckled. "You are not the first princess to say so." It made you wonder if the late King Baldwin had favoured a beard.

Hodierna went to her saddlebags and produced from it a letter. "My sister entrusted this to me," she said, offering it to you. Before you could reach for it, she held it back. "I've not read it, but I do wonder if you deserve it. My sister has twisted herself into a knot over you." Her eyes spoke of mischief.

She handed it to you anyway. And gave it with a kiss on your cheek.

"I suppose I cannot blame her," she said, falling back from her tip-toes, "You cut a fine figure in lord's garments."

Was it the French thing to give a kiss so casually? You put the letter inside that fine lord's doublet you wore.

"My thanks for the letter," you said, "I have hoped for word from my Ioveta, and to have it means a great deal. If you would return to her a letter of my own, you would have my gratitude."

"'My' Ioveta?" Hodierna asked with a look of fake indignation, "So presumptuous aren't we?" She smoothed the front of your doublet with both hands. "But I shall convey your letter to her. She longs for it more, I think, to hear from her dashing knight."

"And I suppose she had to make do with that other letter?" it was statement and question. Hodierna's brow furrowed when she looked up at you. "The queen made some mention of a correspondence that has been much the joy of the royal chambers."

Hodierna's lips formed a perfect little 'Oh!' of understanding, her brows raising.

"Yes, that letter," her hands smoothed down to hitch into your sword belt, "It was quite entertaining to read of your exploits. You seem quite the accomplished negotiator."

The truth was the the truth.

She drew back her hands from where they lopped and smoothed her own skirts, along the thighs. "Still, it was much ungodly of you with a betrothed waiting so loyally. Keeping it from Ioveta was a chore. I do not know what her reaction would be to reading it."

Melisende had mentioned Ioveta had already seen its contents, but you did not think Hodierna was lying. Perhaps the queen had been goading you with a lie. Or mayhap it was Hodierna teasing you. Or both in joint effort. You could not know. The Rethel women seemed to enjoy flirtatious games, if games they were and not guarded tests.

It was a joyful torment they were making you endure.

"You are a diligent guardian," you said, taking Hodierna by the arm, "She is lucky to have you watching over her."

"My sister is a true innocent," Hodierna replied, taking your arm. You led her from the room, toward the feasting hall. "I only seek to preserve that which time erodes in all."

"Is innocence doomed to be lost?" you pondered aloud.

Hodierna considered it, though the question was not meant for answering. "The Church teaches us that all are born in sin, and only baptism can wash away that sin. Still, beyond baptism, who can say?"

The hall was well set, Rosalie had marshaled her considerable talents and the resources of your holding to present a fine welcoming meal to your guests. The seneschal herself waited by the main table, set for noble guests. Sir Ramond and Sir Marcel waited, as did Father Desmond. Some seats were empty. Father Marian, as well as the seat meant for Solomon and Sir Etienne sat empty.

The town Reeve, a man named Xenophane, sat far to the end of the table, keeping company with Sir Marcel.

You took Hodierna to her chair, and took your own seat. It placed you beside Sir Raymond. The other seat beside you was empty, awaiting the Queen herself. Servants poured wine for the waiting guests.

"Lord Wilhelm, it is good to see you again," Raymond said. You'd not spent long in his company, but Hugo had spoken highly of the man. He had saved your brother's life on the streets of Jerusalem.

"It is good to have you in my hall, Sir," you said. In time and with god's favour Raymond would be Count of Tripoli. It was best to be respectful.

"We may be brothers soon," he said, gesturing to Hod with his goblet. "I spy my future wife. I hear tell yours remains in Jerusalem."

Your betrothal to Ioveta was not meant to be known of outside the royal circle. It sent a chill down your spine. You looked to Raymond but the man just smiled and drank.

Your attention was taken however, by the arrival of the queen.

She wore a dress of blue and white, with golden thread along the collar and trailing cuffs. It fit snuggly to her figure, and she walked as ever with tall pride. Above her breast was woven the cross of Jerusalem. Her gold-honey hair had been braided back in a single lthick ong tail that swung like a pendulum behind her. She walked with company, Hugo had her hand, and escorted her to the empty seat.

"My thanks," she told the squire, "You are as much a gentleman as ever. And growing tall. Soon we will be a height."

Hugo blushed and bowed, retreating to his own table. His companions there laughed at his red cheeks. Melisende herself smiled at the awkward young man, before turning her eyes onto you.

The other guests had returned, filling the empty table, and conversation soon filled the hall. Solomon looked concerned by something, leaning on an arm and gazing off into space. Etienne chatted with Father Marian.

You thought it appropriate to make a toast.

What concession? He isn't giving us what's ours. It's been months both in game time and real time since that trial thread, Wilhelm should have a kick-ass beard by now. What you call a concession is a vote to grow a beard or not that wouldn't have been given to us had I not told HF that he should ask us whether or not we grew a beard. That concession is lazy because he should have given us that choice in the first place. No, he should have asked us in the first place.

You stand and raise your horn of wine.

The crowd turns to watch you, Melisende inclines her head and Hodierna leans over the table. Even Jacques quits from plucking at Hugo's cheeks to give you his full attention. You had that effect on a room.

"God has a kingdom," you said, "A kingdom in heaven that awaits all true Christian souls. But while we live our lives in hopes for that eternal salvation, we have Jerusalem. The precious home of Christ, his birth, his death, his Resurrection. Blessed is it among kingdoms!"

"Jerusalem!" horns, tankards, goblets, they were lifted in toast as good Christian men cheered.

"And to its Queen," you gesture to Melisende, who deigns to stand, "For she and Jerusalem are one, just as both are beloved by all their subjects!"

"Melisende!"

They drank to that, tipping back whatever swill they had in their cups with hearty glee.

She did not blush but gave a dimpled smile, and a sly look for you as she sipped her own horn before returning to her seat.

You cut her a slice of beef which she took from the end of your knife.

"Well said," was all the compliment she had.

"Very well said," Raymond said with more enthusiasm.

The feast seems to be going well, you see Sabeen tip half a tankard over Franz's glum head, much to the laughter of her comrades, and Hugo flicks a grape at her in retaliation for his slighted old friend. They quarrel over the table good natured, pokes and pulls at one another's sleeves, until they spill Tancred's wine, and the soldier separates the pair forcefully.

Your own company s not so rowdy. Hodierna speaks with your sister Mathilde, and your sister says some witticism that causes the princess to laugh. The queen focuses mostly on her meal.

The Queen did not look displeased, but she ate in silence.

"Are you well?" you asked, pouring her a little bit of wine.

She smiled. It was a radiant thing. Of all the sisters she and Ioveta looked most alike. It made your heart ache and loins throb. "The travel of the day is starting to catch me," she said, taking the offered wine with a sip.

"How was the road?" you asked. Not long back it had been the domain of Egyptian marauders.

"Safe," she said, "And word has it you are to thank for that."

You shrugged. "I was part of a larger company, serving my liege. If you must thank anyone, send your gratitude to Malik ibn Mujir. He lodges with Count Hugh."

She sniffed. "One of his pet Saracens. My cousin does enjoy the company of that lot. It does him little favour."

You think of Sabeen, of Mohmed and his father Ibrahim. Muslims had done you good service until now.

"Your man Bures spoke of quarrel between the two of you," you said, before plucking a knife-full of pork.

That drew a laugh from Melisende, and her smile grew to one of genuine amusement. "My aged uncle fears any man that casts an eye my way. If we were not under holy vows, he would throw Fulk into the Dead Sea. No, you should not fear a conflict between myself and Hugh. Though his persistent love notes grow tiresome, it is not worth warring over."

She drank a little more heartily, and ate a bit more. She poked you with her fork.

"We should meet later to discuss your own plans. Matters of the future. It is well my Lord of Ramla should have a wife, and give the kingdom heirs."

She spoke of Ascalon in guarded words, but her tone was light. You drank your wine, thinking of the letter on your person.

Sir Raymond had too much to drink, and drew Sir Etienne into an arm wrestle. Your vassal did not manage to best the heir of Tripoli.

"I'll take any man in this room!" he declared, face red from wine.

Melisende looks to you with questioning pout.

"I'll take that," you said, pulling up your sleeve and offering him your hand.

Your men cheered you from their seats.

"Give 'em hell!" Tancred shouted.

"Lion! Lion!" the Saracen Aymal cheered. His words were taken up by the other lancers, who sat with your local garrison. "Lion of Ramla! Lion of Ramla!" Your troops joined in. Sabeen rose from her chair, one arm around Hugo's neck, the other around Tancred's.

"The Lion!" she yelled, face flushed from drink, "Lion of Ramla!"

"Well you have the crowd," Raymond said, then burped, "But I will have victory."

He took your hand, and flexed.

Raymond was not weak, but neither were you. The two of you pressed against one another, veins bulging from biceps. But neither of you mastered the other. Raymond grit his teeth.

Melisende leaned forward and spoke into your ear, a whisper that tickled your neck hairs.

"Come now Lion of Ramla, show me the strength that will take Ascalon."

You grit your teeth and snarl, pushing. Raymond's arm gives ground. He tips back.

"Lion!" Hugo shouts, "You can do it!" He's pulled Jacques close. The brown French boy gives him a disgusted look.

"Wilhelm!" Mathilde cheers from down the table, drumming the tabletop with her small fist, "For Koblenz!"

Your snarl becomes a small roar of effort. Raymond's hand slams down onto the wood surface.

"Ramla! Ramla! Ramla!" the cheers are enough to set you beaming. Raymond curses, shakes his head, but then flashes you a grin. No hurt no foul. Both your sister and Hodierna were clapping.

You see Sabeen laugh, pulling Hugo up to give him a firm kiss on the cheek before releasing him, then falling backwards back into her seat. She toasts you, as does half the hall. Some coin changes hand, you see a coin slip from Marian to Desmond in particular, the two priests enjoying the lively atmosphere.

"A champion of the feast hall," Melisende said, clapping very softly.

The night winds on, and slowly to a close, people begin returning to their bed chambers, or out into the night. Your brother escorts Mathilde to her chambers, the girl still looking to chatter with Princess Hodierna, who was peeling away for more adult company and perhaps a night cap.

Your men left in company of course, still cheering their lord, determined to celebrate further in the barracks.

The hall is almost empty.

"Shall we discuss that small matter before you retire?" Melisende asked, offering you her hand.

"How could I refuse?" you reply, accepting her hand.

You are not the slightest bit drunk, though you had some to drink, and you see that neither is the queen. She took your arm with all regal bearing, and allowed you to escort her up to her chambers. She slipped from your arm and entered first, but you soon followed, closing the door firmly behind you.

The queen went to sit upon the bed, and drew herself up to sit back-pressed upon the headboard. The train of her dress, snug at the hips put spreading out around her legs, formed caverns of blue silk upon the bed sheets.

She offered you the chair by the fireplace. "Sit, and let us talk a little of clandestine matters."

There was no fire set. You took logs and lay them, then fetched a torch from the wall to light it. It's crackle was inviting, and caused the shadows to dance.

You took your seat and leaning upon your shatranj board considered the golden queen that sat upon your bed. The shadows flickered across her face, put a glow upon her skin.

"You have secured Genoan support," she said, "And my agents tell me it is enthusiastic. They are fully committed to taking Ascalon. Ships and soldiers beside are being assembled. They see it as a foothold into Sinai, with all the riches of Arabia waiting. And a chance to remind the peninsular of Genoa's superiority."

"Numbers are more important than enthusiasm," you said.

"Does two thousand troops ring a joyous bell?" she asked, "And ten galleys beside? Mercenaries, for the most part. I was surprised at how eager these Italians are to best one another."

"So I have some Italian wharf rats," you said.

She considered you, running the tip of her finger along her bottom lip. "My cousin Roger is sending ships. Ten galleys with troops. Not a bad share considering he is embroiled in problems of his own."

You nodded. "He and I made an acquaintance, and I suppose Hugh may have spoken with him on this endeavour. It is good, but it does not win Ascalon."
>>
She pouted a little, a tantalizingly girlish expression upon a queen's face. "You are sounding so morose, what can I say to excite you?" she tapped her chin, "Mayhap that the Orders have committed to Ascalon, after being approached by royal parties?"

That had you sitting forward, and brought a crack of amusement upon Melisende's face.

"What ever royal party responsible I owe a debt," you said, finding your voice. Combined and drawn from all the kingdom that was easily another thousand or more martial souls. Knights backed by well trained men-at-arms.

"You will need siege engines," Melisende spoke, "We have some that we might gift you, but we will need more."

You nodded. "I have sent for an engineer. He should arrive soon."

Melisende smiled widely. "Yes, you have been busy."

"Should I not put in every effort?" you asked.

She ran her hand along her neck. That slightly honey'd skin. "Of course you must do all within your power. If you hope to succeed."

You lean forward.

Ask her if she can convince the other lords loyal to her for their support and give us a chance to convicne the ones who are in Fulk's faction to hear us out. Remember Gerad told us to court our friends aswell as our Rival. We are also going to need her help to make us leader of the whole army so Ascalon will be considered ours. "Who else is there?" you ask, "I have Sidon and Jaffa, but they cannot make up the numbers. Half the kingdom hates me, and I fear will only look forward to my defeat."

"Fulk's old supporters." Melisende drew up her knees to rest her chin upon them. "I can say that Pagan of Oultrejordan would be receptive. He was close to my husband, but his land borders the frontier and has long been plagued by Saracens. He would relish the chance to bloody their nose." She mulled over the question. "Galilee will march where ever I order it. And Tripoli can be convinced to send out soldiers and ships. I think Edessa would be fruitless. Dangerous even to draw soldiers from that border. Antioch I cannot say, though my sister rules it. She is fearful of a coup. I have tried to tell her that decisive leadership will win her support, but she frets within her castle while playing games of intrigue with Radolph, the Patriarch of Antioch."

"This is something at least," you say, warming your hands before the fire.

"Shall we continue this talk of state?" she asked, sitting back on her arms outstretched.

"Was there something else you had in mind?" you replied.

"Well, I did not come here just for the pleasure of your company," she cocked her head, "Or rather, I had hoped to enjoy the pleasure of your company."

You couldn't help but grin at the innuendo. But she wasn't smiling, rather she watched you with head high, eyes narrow and bearing upright. Proud. Waiting.

You could not say you had not wanted it. Since first you had met her you had played with the idea.

You rise from the fireside chair.

"I can not refuse my queen," you said, and began to work the toggles off your doublet. You kept eyes with the queen. She gave a sudden high breath, and slid blue silk threaded with gold first from first one shoulder, then the other. Bare shoulders, golden in the light. You peeled off your doublet and let it drop, then drew off your under tunic to leave your chest bare.

You put a hand upon the bed and Melisende drew back against the headboard. The other hand you lowered beside Melisende, pulling yourself above her. She looked up at you, nervous little breaths coming from her lips.

She took a swallow. "My husband is the only-"

You closed her words off with your mouth. The queen's lips were warm, and her tongue answered yours. Her hands came around your shoulders, pushed up along your neck and into your hair. Pulling you down onto the bed, between her legs, drawing your tongue deeper into her mouth. You pushed a hand up her thigh, up her side until you found her collar and pulled it down.

Down until she was bare but for her golden hair unbound.

You looked her over. Flat belly and smooth navel, generous hips, a golden tuft of hair right above her-

She grabbed you by the sword belt.

"Must you wait for written instruction?" she asked, a smile breaking across her face.

You blinked.

And then buried your face against her neck, drawing sweet girlish sounds from Melisende as your fingers began to work. You drew your face down to her shoulders, to the slope of her breasts, which you teased with tongue and teeth, across her navel until you drew your fingers forth and put tongue instead.

She quivered under your ministration, giving soft prayer. With your hands you gripped her thighs, feeling the smooth skin under your rough, calloused hands.

"A child," she said through building sweat, "Give me a child."

That cannot be done with a tongue.

When next you entered her you drew forth womanly moans. She pulled you close, tight, arms around your chest, legs around your thighs. Drawing you deep, urging you faster. Faster, faster, until she was a sweating moan of pleasure.

"God," she said through quivering lips.

It came that you turned upon the bed, and soon changed places. She rode you, chest held high and prideful, hand upon your chest. She looked down upon you through eyes flooded with the anguish of feminine pleasure, shaded by a broken curtain of long gold strands. Your hands grabbed thigh and hip, matching her thrusts.

It is written in some medical texts that in order to conceive, a woman must climax. You had prepared Melisende well.

Her gaze broke from yours and her eyes closed, turned upward. "God!" she near fell, had you not held her by the hips she would have collapsed on your chest.

You grunt, and spill deep, your body taken by orgasm. Melisende lay a-quivering upon your chest, gold hair spilling across her back. You lifted that sweet face. An expression of wind-blown rapture gave way to a sly grin. She pulled herself up, sitting upon your belly, and ran her hands through your sweat soaked black hair.

Her eyes spoke of duty well performed, and her smile invited more.

She tipped up your cleft chin to place a kiss upon your lips. Her hands ran around your neck as she she drew a returned kiss out of you. When you had been near drawn back to muster from that kiss, she slid to your side. Melisende lay her head upon your shoulder, pressed her breasts against your side, and slowly gained back her breath.

You lay in pleasant afterglow, hand trailing along the queen's back. A queen was something else indeed.

You are Hugo of Ramla.

And you are drunk. Very drunk. You burped and for a second feared vomit, but instead unloosened your hose and took a piss against the wall.

"Long live Queen Melisende!" Jacques sat, waving a half-filled horn of ale, "Queen of Jerushalem and Beautiful Fuggin' Tits!"

You draw up your hose. "You should-you shouldn't talk about the queen that way!" you said, pointing an accussing figure, "She's agood woman." You hiccuped. "An' she's virtuous an' she's chaste, an' she's perfect."

Jacques pointed at you. "Perfect bloody tits," he said.

You blinked one eye then the other, and burped. "Okay, okay, yeah she's got nice tits."

"You jerked off thinking about her," Jacques said, making a hand pumping gesture.

"'Ey!" you could hit him if he'd just sit still and stop-stop going blurry.

"But I know who else you jerk off too," Jacques said with a drunk chuckle. "She got that dark brown skin, those nice cat eyes and an arse like a-like a peach."

"You shuddup!" you looked around in case any had heard.

Jacques chuckled, and then gave a weird frown. He'd spilled his ale horn across his lap. He squeezed his eyes tight, then turned over and puked. That set you off to puking too. The two of you puked up your guts. When you were done the world seemed a whole lot more steady. Even if there was still a bit of shimmy to every motion.

You helped your friend up and walked arm in arm back to the keep.

Jacques burped and looked up at the moon.

"'Ugo," he said, "You figure we'll still be mates once you're knighted?"

You gave him a wrinkly drunk frown. "We're both gonna be knighteds," you said.

>"She's agood woman." You hiccuped. "An' she's virtuous an' she's chaste, an' she's perfect."

That she is Hugo! You tell him!
>>
Jacques eyes grew very wide. "Nah Hugo. Not me. That's not how it is for us peasants. Yer different. Yer special." He staggered from your arm and held a hand up to the sky. "I'm never gon' be a knight. Just a thing, a fetcher, a carrier a shord-sharpener." He took a gulp of air, his chest heaving. "An' an' an' things like me. We ain't even gon' be people to you once you're a knight. Jus' dirty things what fetch and carry. Throw away when they ain't needed." Tears were building in his eyes.

"You can't be mates with a thing!" he near buckled over.

"If I can be mates with a Jew," you poke him hard in the head, "If I can be mates with a bloody Sarasacen." Did you say that right? "If-if I can be mates wiff a right bloody heathen like Ch-Chira-Charizard!" You put a finger up. "I think I can be mates wiff a bloody idiot like you! Knight or not."

"You say that now," Jacques looked up at you, face all knotted up and grumpy, angry with himself for crying.

You wobbled. "I'm sayin' it. I'll knight you my bloody self. My-bloody-self if I gots to."

"Jacques gave a drunk laugh. "Aw fuck you 'Ugo you lying sack of shit."

"No man callsh me a liar!" you swung at him and he tackled you. The pair of you fell into a drunken heap of flaying, laughing boyhood. By the time the pair of you are separated you have a bloody nose that stained your teeth, shown in a broad grin, and Jacques wasn't much better.

Tancred stands between you frowning. "You lads need some discipline," he said, long moustache adding to that terrible frown, "Tomorrow ye'll run a mile with stones to carry."

"You ain't my bloody knight!" Jacques said, giving the soldier a finger.

"You think they'll say no?" Tancred asked.

Jacques closed his eyes, then said the loudest 'FUCK' you'd ever heard.

"Get some bed rest ye little bastards," he said, pushing the two of you on, "You'll need it on the morrow."

The two of you stagger onwards. You spy the lancer Aymal taking a piss by the stables. You never liked that Saracen much. He was a good looking guy. You didn't like the way he looked at Sabeen. Or Maggie. Or Etain. Or any bloody woman come to think of it. Maybe it was Jealousy. He had a smooth charm you lacked, even in his broken Latin.

You saw a bucket of manure. Jacques saw it too and snickered.

>>
As much as you'd like to, you don't, leaving the bucket where it was. Aymal saw the two of you. He gave a friendly smile and a wave as he finished pissing. He was drunk too. Staggering from his spot, he came to stand with you and Jacques.

"Friends!" he stretched out a hand, "Any luck tonight? We are in Christ lands, and Christ was the prophet of love. We should be so lucky to find girls to love." He moved his hand like he was feeling the figure of a woman, and looked as if he might kiss it.

Jacques just snorted, shook his head. "Crazy bloody Saracens."

But all eyes turned when Maggie and Etain walked by, in company with your bitch half-sister Mathilde.

"Hello beautiful," Aymal said to Mathilde.

"Excuse me?" she replied with a quirked brow and a smug smile.

All you could think was:

GOD WHAT A FUCKING BITCH

"You should be covered in jewels and dressed in silk," he said, wobbling dangerously, "The prize of a caliph's harem. I could be that Caliph of your heart."

"Heathens," Mathilde rolled her eyes and graced the drunk Saracen with a very light pat on the cheek.

Jacques was just staring at Maggie. Staring a bit too hard without saying something.

"Are you a'ight Jackie-Boy?" she asked.

"Uh," he replied, managing a nod. He continued to stare. Mostly at her tits.

You shook your head, these two just didn't know how to talk to women.

You check your collar and scuff the vomit off your shoes.

"Hey Maggie," you said with a smile.

Her shoulders perked and her eyes lit up. "Hugo," she said.

You ran a hand through your blonde hair. It had grown out since the time in St Anne's.

"Sorry about my mates," you said, you gestured to them with a thumb, "They can't handle their drink. Act a bit foolish when it gets to their head."

"-I- remember when father let you have a drink," Mathilde interjected with a smug little smile. She put a finger to your chest. "You puked all over his britches, right before he was due to meet the bishop."

You tried to keep your smile. "Well I was just a boy then," you said.

Mathilde rolled her eyes. "Oh and you're such a big tough guy now," she replied.

You shook out your head, and put your attention back on Maggie. "So what are you girls doing now the feast is over?" you asked, managing not to stumble over your words.

"We could stand a drink," Maggie drew back the cover of her satchel. A bottle of wine and some cups. "But I don't think you boys could stomach another." The girls shared a giggle and a challenging eye.

You scoff, and look to your friends.

"Maggie 'ere reckons she can out drink us," you said.

Jacques blew out his cheeks while Aymal shook his head.

You looked back at Maggie with a grin. "I'll go you cup for cup," you said, a finger to her chest. Or rather her breast.

She looked at it, then up at you with a grin, jaw slightly crooked.

"Well then," Mathilde said, taking the bottle of wine and sauntering over to the stables. Etain and Maggie followed her. And you and Jacques were soon following. Aymal tried but staggered and fell with a laugh.

"Good luck!" he called after you, grin very wide and eyes glassy.

And that was your last coherent memory of the night.

The night was a serious of flashes and sounds.

You remember the stable loft, covered with straw. Sitting in a cirle. Etain to the left, Maggie in front, Mathile next to Jacques. You remember giggling. Lots of girlish giggling. You remember clothes being taken off in some kind of game. Piece by piece. Your bare chest. Jacques naked and snoring. The girls each naked, Maggie, Etain and even Mathilde was down to her shift with the girls threatening to tear it off her.

You remember she did take it off, and you felt hot and confused.

You remember Maggie's coo and the way Etain bit her lip. Did they kiss? Yes. Each kissed the other, and then each kissed you. You couldn't remember in which order. Mathilde had disappeared after that. You weren't sure if she'd kissed you or not.

And then it was you and the Irish girls as naked as your name day.

And there was a lot of kissing.

Then Etain left and it was just you and Maggie. She was soft, freckled on her shoulders.

You remember her moan in your ear as you were on top of her in the straw. Her sigh.

And as you blinked out bleary eyes and sought to silence the horns blasting in your skull with palms pressed to your temples, you turned to see her pale nakedness beside you. Belly flat against the ground, smiling in her sleep, red mane strewn with straw and head tucked into the crook of your arm. You looked down. Pale curves, full and inviting to a sober man, were pressed against you.

And you blushed in embarrassment at some of those memories. Prayed that Mathilde would not remember.

Jacques suddenly burst from the straw. Sitting up and smacking dry lips, eyes hooded. Naked as well, his chest pale compared to his deep baked limbs and head.

His eyes rolled over Maggie, and then to you.

He sighed. "Lucky," he said and then laughed.
>>
Maggie stirred, opening bleary eyes and smiling at you. "G'mornin'," she said.

"Morning," you replied, running a finger unconsciously between her shoulder blades. You stopped your twitching finger and cursed yourself. This was the second high born maiden you'd dishonoured. And she had that well dishonoured glow on her face.
Curse you for the worst form of blackguard.

You searched for your clothes and pulled them on, knocking over cups and an empty bottle as you did so. Maggie rolled away from you, sitting up. You threw her the dress she'd worn.

"My apologies," you said, "I-I lost control. I didn't mean to-"

Maggie grinned and pressed her thighs together. "Christ, if that's what you do by accident you'll have to do it deliberate next time."

You blushed clean to your roots but couldn't help but feel a twinge of pride.

"LADS!" Tancred's bull voice crashed through your ear drums. "HUP-TWO! TIME FER RUNNING!"

The man-at-arms had not forgotten you.

You buckle on your sword and waved Jacques to follow. He dressed as quickly. You scooted down the ladder, while Jacques jumped. He didn't seem hung over. Curse him for a lucky bastard. Your head thumped bad before. When you stepped out into the light of the courtyard you nearly cried. Literally tears of pain.

Tancred waited, fully armoured, nasal helm in place. Shield strapped and spear in hand.

He had similar equipment at his feet, and a very nasty smile on his face.

"My lucky day," he said, "Two fresh 'uns nice and ripe."

He had you pull on the maille, the helms, strap on the shields and pick up the spears. God it was hell, a furnace.

You looked to Jacques. The pair of you were green to the gills.

"What happened to stones?" Jacques asked.

Tancred gave a mean chuckle. "My assistant had a better idea."

A horse snorted, scuffed. You turned to see Sabeen walk out of the stables leading her black stallion. She snorted too at the sight of you. Shook her head. Her eyes seemed hard.

"Tancred, you need someone to give these boys a spur?" she asked as if this were a surprise and not a plan.

Tancred doffed the rim of his helm to her. "Wouldn't hurt fer the help m'lady Sabeen."

She swung up into the saddle. Tancred threw her his spear, which she flourished either side the war horse, causing its ears to flick.

"This is horse shit," Jacques cussed, kicking up a clod of dirt.

"Round the town at least once," Tancred said, "Try not to pass out!"

And then Sabeen kicked her horse into a trot, spear point flicking at the two of you to get you moving.

You started forward at a slouch, and felt the tip of Sabeen's spear ring the helm on your head like a church bell. You near passed out from that alone.

You surged on with heavy feet, feeling the weight of the armour, the spear, the shield. And though it was mid-winter the heat as well was pressing in on you, trapped to your chest by cloth and steel both. Sabeen trotted behind you, point flicking to your buttocks should you slow.

But you did not slow. You did not falter though your limbs wanted to give out. You gave each bloody step at a light jog.

Jacques collapsed behind you and was left there for a village man to clean up.

It was just you and Sabeen.

And at last when you thought you might lose your feet you heard her growl.

"Keep those feet moving!" she said, "Don't stop for nothing! The armies of Islam are before you and there is no fleeing. A thousand men stand beside you. They can do it. They will march no matter the hunger, the weather, the sickness. Come on Frank, lift those legs!"

She trotted beside you, looked down from her horse. "Come on boy, keep moving. Can't you keep up with the men?"

There was heat in her voice, anger in her eyes. You glared up at her with a frustrated anger of your own.

"God I fucking hate you," you said in German, struggling every step. She trotted ahead, standing in the saddle and looking back at you. Then turning to look ahead. You kept your eyes on her back, finding every step.

You made it round the wall, and then collapsed. Gasping, leaning on your spear, clutching at your chest. Feeling for one terrible moment as if you would die.

Sabeen's eyes widened and she was quick of her horse, breathing near as hard as you were.

She was beside with a canteen, and pushed the water toward you, lifting your chin (covered with soft blond down) with her fingers. "Drink Hugo," she said, pressing it to your lips. You gulped down the water with breathy snorts. You choked, turned and vomited red on the dirt.

Blood? No, wine. You wiped it on your wrist. She gave you her canteen, pulled off your helm and smoothed back your sweat darkened hair.
>>
"Christ, Hugo," she said, chest starting to settle. She frowned and pinched at her lips, a very confused look on her face as if she had said something very wrong.

You tipped the water over your head, mouth open and drinking as it poured down your cheeks and over your chin. You handed it back empty. "Praise Allah," you said in jest, finding a smile for her as you wiped your face.

She chuckled. Then smoothed back your hair again, smiling as well.

Damned for a fool but she had the most lovely smile.

Okay. Maybe/maybe not.
>>
>>40638722

Hey dude, you've got responsibilities and a fiance, so it's understandable. At least you try, and seeing these threads up tends to make my day.

>>
>>40638819
To be fair. It is hard to not be a bit cynical about the vidya industry.
>>
>>40638711
>>40638708
Hmm, I may be missing something but those letters were to knightly orders and local lords and princes.
I was thinking more of a message directed to the masses. But I think someone mentioned previously that local lords would not take kindly to us asking for their people to leave their lands to work in ours now that i think about it.
>>
>>40638855
>One you spend a great deal of time on in is a letter to Archbishop Albero in Trier, as well as your father in Koblenz. It took you longer than you thought to draft them properly, extending to each an invitation to visit your new holdings. Your father had never been much of a land owner. He might be impressed by your lordship. He wasn't impressed by much.

that's asking for trouble, besides if there betters go it's likely the small folk will if they are able.
>>
>>40638855
Only the pope or a very powerful bishop or patriarch could make such a decree.
