It's Sunday afternoon, and you've just been released from the hospital.

After being shot, you were dead for several minutes, during which time you had a vision of a strange world, and a cloaked woman in the sky. Since recovering, you've come to learn that the place you saw was called Spirit World, and the woman you met was named Kaya.

Kaya visited you in a dream last night, and made a peculiar offer. She explained to you that returning from death has made you very special, and that someone named Koenma wants to make you a Spirit Detective.

According to Kaya, a Spirit Detective protects mankind from apparitions, or "demons" if you prefer. With new abilities, your job will be to track down and capture or destroy demons before they can cause havoc in your world.

Typical job for a sixteen year old, right?

Your father has driven you back to your apartment complex, and has already gone inside. Apparently spending time with you in the hospital put him behind on his paperwork, so he's going to be pretty busy today, as far as you can figure.

You feel fantastic, and the day is yours. What will you do?

>A. Go tell Bruce you're okay

>B. Go tell Lucy that you're okay

>C. Go inside and study like you'd planned

>D. Go for a walk, get some fresh air, see if there's anything fun to do

>E. Go inside and make yourself some lunch

You're hungry. Hospital food isn't exactly the greatest, and it's not as if you got a lot of it anyway.

You make your way to your apartment, stepping inside to find your father already making himself busy grading papers. He'll probably be at it for a few hours, so you shouldn't really expect him to be particularly chatty.

You make your way to the kitchen, opening the fridge and grabbing a few things. A quick visit to the cabinet and silverware drawer, and you have everything you need to make yourself a sandwich. You quickly put one together and take a seat at the kitchen table, eating your food before getting back up and pouring yourself a glass of orange juice.

As you sip your drink, you hear a knock on the door.

Your father looks up from his papers a moment, then looks over at you.

"Can you get that?" he asks before returning to his work.

>A. Go answer the door

You do as your father asks.

Well, close enough. You walk to the door and ask who it is rather than opening it right away.

"It's Lucy!" you hear from the other side. "Please, open up!"

You open the door to find your neighbor wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Her expression is one of hope and fear, though it's replaces by relief the moment she sees you.

"You're alive!" she shouts with glee, putting her arms around you and hugging you tight. "I heard you were shot and I-"

You expect her to say that she thought you were dead, or that she was worried sick, or something along those lines. But, she doesn't even finish her sentence. Instead, she lets go of you and smacks you upside the head.

That hurt a lot worse than any punches you took last night, and you fall to your knees holding the spot where she struck you.

"You idiot!" she yells. "I told you going to that fight was stupid, but you did it anyway and almost got yourself killed!"

Her right hand clenches into a fist and tears well in her eyes.

"I thought you were dead, you moron!" she tells you, looking ready to hit you again.

It's clear that she was very worried about you, and quite angry at you for making her worry like that. You figure that you should probably watch what you say if you want to avoid being hit again.

>A. You're sorry for worrying her. You were stupid, and you won't be going to any more fights.

>B. You're sorry for worrying her

>C. You were dead. For six whole minutes. You got better, though.

"I was dead," you tell her, standing back up.

"W-what?" Lucy asks, confused.

"Yeah, for six whole minutes," you say. "I got better, though."

Lucy scowls, clenching her fist and hitting you in the head again, this time knocking you onto your back. You're seeing stars at this point, so you probably won't want to make her angry again. Otherwise, you might end up back in the hospital.

"Don't even joke like that!" she demands, standing over you and staring down with an expression that would probably make even Tim or Richard afraid.

"He's not joking," your father says, leaving his papers and walking over, presumably wanting to make sure that Lucy doesn't murder you.

"What?" Lucy asks in a horrified tone.

"He was dead for a few minutes," your father tells her. "The doctors managed to revive him."

Lucy looks back at you, the tears beginning to flow down her face at this point. Her anger seems to have left, but the look she's giving you kind of makes you wish she was still pissed off.

Without another word, she turns and runs off, and you hear the sound of her apartment door slamming shut not long after.

Lucy knows that you're okay, but you're pretty sure she doesn't want to talk to you right now. And, you're not really interested in sticking around so your father can tell you that she was right and give you a lecture about your life choices.

Picking yourself off the floor, you go outside, leaving your apartment complex and taking a walk around town.

You pass the movie theater, which is playing some new action film that Bruce has been talking your ear off about lately.

You overhear some kids from your school talking about the fight Friday night.

"-still can't believe Tim pulled a gun," one of the boys says. "What the hell was he thinking?"

"Tim's always had a screw loose if you ask me," the other boy answers. "I think getting beaten up by that twerp Richard was just the last straw for him."

"Nah, Tim's always had some anger problems, but he's never been the kind to try and kill somebody for beating him in a fight," the first boy says. "I think something else is going on."

"Thinks he's on drugs?" the second boy asks.

"Who the hell knows?" the first boy replies. "I'm sure the police will find out."

As you eavesdrop on the conversation, you see a man across the street who seems to be talking to himself. Weirder than that, it looks like there's something sitting on his shoulder.

>A. Go see that movie

You're not sure what's up with that guy, or what that thing is on his shoulder, but you're curious enough to go and find out.

You cross the street and rest against a building near the man, doing your best to make it look like you're not watching him. He's facing away from you anyway, so it probably doesn't matter.

You immediately notice something odd; there are two voices coming from the man.

No, that's not right. One of the voices is coming from that creature on his shoulder. From your current position, you can see that it is gray in color and has a tail. At first you think it's some kind of rodent, but a look at its head tells you that the gray isn't fur, it's skin. It's head is covered by black hair, from which a series of small horns are protruding. If you're not mistaken, the creature seems to be wearing pants as well. You can't see its face, but you're already pretty confident that thing isn't an animal.

Maybe it's one of the demons Kaya told you about?

"You know she is unfaithful," the creature tells the man. "You've seen the way she looks at him. She has betrayed you, taken your trust, your love, and stomped on it."

"No, no she wouldn't," the man insists, his voice trembling.

"Do not be so naïve," the creature says. "All of those nights she's "stayed late at the office", all of the mysterious phone calls. What other explanation is there?"

"W-what other explanation is there?" the man repeats, as if in a trance.

"Exactly," the creature tells him. "She has betrayed you, and she must be punished for it."

"She must be punished," the man repeats.

"She must suffer," the creature insists.

"She must suffer!" the man shouts, drawing some stares from passersby.

You're not sure exactly what that thing is, but you're sure you don't like it.

You move from your spot, breaking into a sprint and running up behind the man. Reaching out, you wrap your hand around the little creature and lift him from the man's shoulder.

The creature shrieks in surprise, frantically kicking his feet and struggling to free himself from your grasp. He looks back, staring up at you with glowing red eyes, showing off rows of sharp teeth as he curses at you.

"What the hell?" he demands. "How are you seeing me? How are you touching me? Humans aren't supposed to be able to do that! No fair!"

The man walks off, seeming kind of confused as to what just happened to him. For some reason, you get the feeling that things will be okay without this little thing whispering in his ear.

"Let go of me, you disgusting human!" the creature demands. "Or I'm going to rip you apart!"

"What are you?" you ask the little creature.

"What am I? What are you, stupid?" it asks. "You can see me, but you don't even know what I am?"

It stops struggling, beginning to laugh to itself. "So that's it, you're just an idiot. Good, I was worried that you were someone dangerous for a minute. You won't be any trouble to kill."

You feel your hand slowly beginning to be forced open, and, to your shock, the tiny creature in your hand begins to grow, escaping your grasp and dropping to the ground. It continues to get bigger and bigger, before it stands even taller than you do. It looks down at you, grinning with its sharp teeth and raising its clawed hands.

You turn and run into a nearby alley, hearing the creature laughing behind you.

"Scared?" it asks. "I don't blame you. Looks like even you're smart enough to know when you're dead!"

Ignoring its taunts, you keep running, cursing as you reach a dead end.

You turn to find the creature slowly walking after you, clearly in no hurry to end this little chase. It probably knows you've reached a dead end, and is just savoring the moment as it gets ready to kill you.

"Nowhere to run," it tells you, laughing. "Now you're gonna hurt a whole lot. Then, after I've had some fun, I'm going to kill you."

You're not just going to cower as this thing tears you apart. But, you're fairly confident that trying to defend yourself would just result in being cut to pieces by that thing's claws.

Oh well, the best defense is a good offense, right?

You run towards the creature as fast as you can, jumping as you get close, and punching it in the face as hard as you can. As you land, it steps back from the force of your punch, and you take advantage, punching again, this time hitting it right between the legs.

The creature gasps in pain, bringing its hands down to cover its groin out of instinct, and leaving itself open for your finishing move. You leap up and give an uppercut that knocks the monster out cold. It collapses on its back, going still and shrinking back into the tiny size from before.

"Well done," a woman's voice says from ahead of you.

Looking away from the creature, you see a woman in a hooded robe standing at the entrance to the alley. Between her voice and her choice of outfit, you're pretty sure you know who she is before she even identifies herself.

She confirms your suspicions almost at once, pulling back her hood to reveal her face.

Kaya.

"Have you been watching me?" you ask, feeling slightly peeved that she didn't bother trying to help you.

"I have," she answers with a smile. "And I'm very impressed. Not only did you manage to locate a demon, you also managed to defeat him on your own, and even took the time to lure him away from innocent people."

She gives you a wink. "Nice, work, detective."

Kaya steps forward, crouching down and picking up the unconscious demon. "This creature's name is Ishpa. He whispers into the ears of mortals, convincing them to inflict pain and suffering upon others, pain and suffering that he feeds on."

She stands back up. "But not anymore, thanks to you."

The creature begins to stir, struggling in Kaya's grip before it's even fully awake. Rings of yellow light quickly surround the creature, and it goes still once again.

It seems fitting we purchase one asap.

"Can you take off that robe?" you ask.

She looks down. "I suppose it is pretty conspicuous."

She throws it aside, showing that she was wearing red sweatpants and a black shirt beneath it. She smiles at you, putting her hands on her hips.

"That's better, right?" she asks. "Oh, I almost forgot. Our intelligence seems to suggest that Ishpa was responsible for what happened the other night."

She looks down at the creature, forcing him back to unconsciousness as he begins to wake up again.

"He was whispering into the ear of the boy who shot you," she explains. "You weren't the intended target, but it seems you were shot as a result of him influencing that other boy."

"What do you keep doing to him?" you ask, looking at the creature curiously.

"Oh, I'm just using small pulses of Spirit Energy to shock him back into unconsciousness," Kaya explains. "It's a simple trick, and for such a weak demon it works rather well."

She stares at you a moment, then seems to realize something. "Oh, right, I didn't explain that to you, did I? You're probably pretty confused right now. You see, Demons are ranked according to power, and are assigned classes based on that rank. Ishpa is an E class demon, the lowest rank of their kind."

Her expression turns serious. "But, never let a demon's class fool you. Those such as Ishpa are very dangerous, not because of their strength, but because of the havoc their powers can cause. Ishpa can make a person do terrible things they never would otherwise, and, depending on the person he influences, that can mean something terrible."

>A. Ask her to explain the whole Spirit Energy thing again

"Can you explain the whole Spirit Energy thing again?" you ask.

She nods. "Alright. You see, inside of every human, there is both Life Energy and Spirit Energy. Normally, humans aren't aware of their Spirit Energy, but being dead, even temporarily, caused your body to become attuned to your Spirit Energy. Those with Spirit Awareness are capable of fetes most humans would find impossible. You might not have noticed, but in your fight just not, you moved faster and hit harder than you would have before."

She chuckles. "Had you fought Ishpa two days ago, he would have almost certainly killed you."

You look down at the tiny creature struggling in her hand, and decide that being killed by that thing would have been pretty embarrassing.

Kaya knocks it unconscious again. "Beyond that, those with Spiritual Awareness can learn and master powerful techniques. Some choose to spend their lives in study and develop techniques for themselves, often passing them down to the next generation. Others develop techniques out of necessity, such as in intense combat situations."

She smirks. "You defeated Ishpa pretty easily, so no technique was necessary."

Kaya turns away. "In any case, I need to get him back to Spirit World. He's going to have some questions to answer, then he'll probably be locked up for a long time."

She holds out her right hand, and an oar appears in it. "And don't forget about your appointment with Lord Koenma tonight! I'll see you later!"

Kaya flies into the sky, vanishing from sight and leaving you alone in the alley. You figure that hanging out there probably won't be very fun, so you leave, deciding how to spend the rest of your day.

You've already spoken to Lucy since you got back, but you haven't seen Bruce yet. It's probably a good idea to go and tell him that you're alright.

You doubt that he's at home right now, so you check a few of his favorite haunts. He's not at the department store, and he's not at the arcade, so you check the local burger joint next.

Sure enough, that's where you find him, munching down on a burger and slurping down a milkshake. The place is mostly empty, and he doesn't see you come in, so when you take a seat across from him in his booth, he looks like he's seen a ghost.

"W-woah," he says, grinning. "Man, I thought you were a goner for sure, but here you are looking like you just woke up fro a good nap!"

He drops his burger, laughing in disbelief. "How the hell did you recover from a bullet wound that quickly? Hell, how are you even alive!"

>A. Tell him that you died, but the doctors revived you. You aren't sure how you got better so quickly

"I died," you tell him. "But, the Doctors revived me. Honestly, I'm not sure how I got better so quickly."

Bruce's jaw drops. "Are you serious? You're serious. Holy shit! Dude, you're gonna be a freakin' legend! Back from the dead and badder than ever! That's so freakin' cool, man!"

The few other people in the restaurant look over at you and your friend in confusion. Bruce eventually takes the hint and quiets down a bit.

"Seriously man, even Tim hasn't done anything that awesome," he tells you. "Hell, Tim killed you and you still came back. Nobody is gonna believe it."

"Tim wasn't trying to kill me," you assure him. "It was a mistake."

Bruce shrugs. "Whatever man. Point is, he shot you and you still came back. That's pretty damn amazing."

He picks his burger back up, taking another bite.

"By the way, Richard was really surprised what you did for him," he tells you, little bits of food flying from his mouth.

He swallows before continuing. "After you got shot, he knocked Tim right the hell out, then helped me carry you to the hospital."

He laughs. "You should have seen the look on everyone's faces when he started helping me out. It was like they thought the world was ending or something."

"I'll have to thank Richard," you comment.

"Yeah, and, you know, I kind of carried you too," Bruce reminds you. "And showed him where the hospital was."

"Thanks," you say.

He nods. "Hey, no problem, man, you'd do the same for me, right? But hey, if you really want to thank me, you could pay for my meal."

He holds up his hands. "Kidding. Anyway, I have to get home. I have a crapton of homework to do and I haven't even started yet. I'll see you tomorrow."

Bruce gets up and leaves. You do the same, and the two of you end up walking home together. Bruce heads to his apartment to do his homework (he's had a week to work on it, but unlike you waited to do it until the last minute) while you go into your own.

The sun's starting to get low, and soon, you'll have a very important meeting.
