In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

New year, new events

>Galactic events[20]:

Black Templars destroy the Chaos Hounds Warband in the Gothic Sector. Their glorious victory secures Imperial colonies in that region of space. Black Templar warship "Sanctimus" is now moving towards Sector Deus and will be passing our realm in 2 years time.

>Sector events[39]

Irresponsible rogue trader has delivered a shipment of lasguns to the developing world of Ginaria, changing the balance of power there, a minor civil war breaks out.

>Realm events[8]

Seran, Master of the Forge, approaches you:
>Milord, I would like to inform you that it appears that one of our Techmarines has shown great talent for creation. His name is Tiberius and I strongly suggest you to send him to one of the Forge Worlds to learn the craft of the Artisan. Please, take a look at this wonderful item which he has created:

Averon Birg, your Chapter Treasurer approaches you, his back is slightly slouched, and his shoulders tensely raised. He has the bearing of a man who brings bad news.
>M'lord I have made some estimates and accounting and as your Tresurer, I must say that while the Chapter is doing admirably on the battlefield, we have a much more abysmal situation on our financing.
Averon lays a dataslate with some graphs on it

>I have researched our monetary gains and expenses during the last forty years, and it is not looking good. If this keeps up we won't be able to buy mere ammunition.
His pained expression brightens, as he straightens himself a little.
>Of course I didn't just came to you to be a barer of bad news. I have many proporsition for solution. By my estimates, the most economical decision would be, if every fourth year we increase our yearly income. My second proposition is connected with the first one; separate accounting.
>This is how it works. There are two accounts; Expansion, and General account. For instance we gain 10 million thrones from Adria for the next nine years. There is a divison precentage between the accounts, I can advise which is the best, the but decision will be always yours Chapter Master.
>For instance, if the division rate is 50-50%, then every year 5-5 wealth goes to each account. Let's say the 10 years is over and each account has 50 million.
>An emergency occours, and we have to spend some thrones. With the separate accounting, we will know that we have 50 thrones to spend at maximum if we want to keep growing. Of course the money is alway's the chapters, and by extension, yours, so if you deem it necessary, we can always spend all 100 million throne on the emergency, though I highly advise against that.
>Addittionally if you think the chapter is doing well, you can always deposit more on the Expansion account.
That's the gist of Averon's proposal, the rest is enthusiastic and highly compressed lecture about costs, marginal costs, revenues, indexes, and supply curves.

While we are at it, I would like to adress something
I've been thinking about the possibilities, troubles, and dangers, of the cults within the chapter. It occoured to me, that instead of simply worhipping the Emperor, or being content with themselves, why would sane marines go and be loners on the Icy wastes, worship Chapter Master, or "collect souls" of their fallen enemies. We even have a damned Offical Chapter Cult. Then I realised what the Chapter Cult lacks in face of the othe cults.
We don't have traditions, we don't have rituals, gatherings, something that gives the Marines a sense of belonging, something that would force their loyalties. The Soulkillers had their whole trophy collection thing, the Ice Wraiths went on picnics, and even the DeathWishers do some public punching together.
So what we need is something that reinforces the identity of the Marines, something that makes them think "Fuck yeah, I'm a GoR"
>>
>>40627522
so I here is my idea:
The Séance: At in the final days of every year the Ghosts hold an event. Only the fully fledged marines may participate. In he event the Chapter Master talks to his people, to disperse their doubts, and lift their spirit.
In the following days, the Chapter recounts the deeds done during that year, celebrates the good, remembers the memorable, mourns the fallen.
After that, they cross out the repayed debts from the Chapter Chronicles, and add the good deeds.
The event is finished with the Whispered Promise. Every marine can make an oath, a single promise for the future, that they will try to uphold to their best in the following year.

Where should we send him, milord?

>Nestorium, Sector Deus
It's close and our allies will teach him out of courtesy for us. We should expect him to be back to the Chapter within 3+d7 years. However we must be aware that we'll owe a favour to our allies.

>Mars, Solar System
It's the greatest place for promising talents to learn their trade, however the good teachers are highly sought after and a recently founded Chapter, such as ours, would need to donate to get proper education for our Artificer. We could expect him to come back in 3+2d7 years and it would cost us d10 Wealth.

>Graia, Sector Draximos
Known for it's giant forges, Graia is an impressive place to start a career for a young Artificer. It's far away, but getting a teacher will not cost anything. We could expect Tiberius to be back in 3+3d7 years.

Krieger Mission:
Success: Absolute Failure
Casualties: Very Low
Area Cleared: 28% [decreased to 0% due to nat. 100]

Kriegers have done their best, however the task is simply too hard for them. They are unstoppable when fighting in a formation on a battlefield, however the endless wastes are not an enemy you can attack. For the first few months they tried marching onto the biggest suspected concentrations of mad battle-servitors, however by the time they would arrive, mad machines would be already gone. They tried splitting their forces into smaller detachments, to cover greater area, however then needless casualties started mounting and officers decided that completing the mission comes first before their wish to die for the Emperor. They also tried siege method - methodically deconstructing debris and advancing forward only when the area is secured. However not only this method would require them a few centuries to clear out the planet, but it also proved fruitless as servitors and mutants appear to have dug miles of underground tunnels beneath the fields of debris, making the task twice as hard...

Casualties: d100-20 from every Brigade (5d100)

2. =Sleeper= During a routine endurance exercise armourless Astartes have by accident awakened Heavy Battle Servitor, it obliterated Drewar's head and torn Ajax in two before Kay took the beast down personally.
3. =Landslide= Astartes were operating with sisters near the volcanic areas when an unexpected eruption split the mountainside and brothers Higer, Nozar and Trekion were burned alive, another 23 sisters died together with them.
4 =No casualties= Kay has managed to complete the mission without a single casualty, he gains trait +Protector+

Mission Name: Hide and Seek
Leader: Captain Quintor
Members: 5th company, 40 marine 1 apothecary, 2 techmarine, Chaplain Tempestos, Magos Voughtius
Transport/Vehicles: Strongback, 1 thunderhawk. I requisitioned 10 warbike for you use, that migh come handy on the steppes of Wladistan. You might even gift one away to the Planetary Governor, should the possibility arise to gain something of at least equal value.
Equipment: long range scanners,
Primary Mission One: Brother Quintor, your mission is simple, search the planet Wladistan and the sorrounding space for xeno, expecially Tau activity. Looking for portal and webway activity is also highly recommended. I send with you 2 techmarines who ill work out the thechnical details. I you could find traces of Boher Elegion, and Vectus, the mission would be considered success.
Primary Mission Two: Offically, Magos Voughtius will accompany you to help with her expertise in scanning Wladistan, and give technical support. However she is instructed to try and meet with Anastasia Barbaross away from prying eyes. Try your best to meet with the Rouge Trader, and learn what she know, what the sector government doesn't want her to know. Gather the intel from her, and offer her to smuggle her back to Tombstone. If she refuses, let her go. She is innocent until proven guilty.
Duration and Success Criteria: Any definite sign of xeno, especially Tau activity, or till 352.M41
Secondary/Tertiary Mission: The world Wladistan has fierce inhabitants. They may even be called savage by some, but I call them potential recruits. Your close combat expertise will be of great value in gaining the admiration of the Wladistanians, in showing them what the zeal of the Emperor's finest looks like. I send Chaplain Tempestos with you to aid you in this pourpose. The intel from the inhabitans also might be of use, if the Tau are actually in the area, then they must have attempted connections at least once.
Emperor be with you.

When you enter the cell where the eldar captive is kept, you suddenly feel a strong gust of his psychic power wash over you. His piercing eyes are looking straight at you, as if accusing, but his gaze bears no malice. He is a young Eldar male, or more likely just young-looking, rather than truly young. From what you recall from your chats with Adriel, an Eldar can be a few thousands of years old, but he will still feel young at heart and keep his appearances in line with the way he feels. When he speaks, his perfect teeth shine even in the dim light of the prison cell:
>Hah, the warrior-king. Pleasure is mine, mon-keigh. Don't think me ungrateful for saving me away from your plagued brethren, but for some reason I still feel as if I am a captive. I feel the touch of the Race upon you, your mind has had close contacts with us before, I am sure. You even understand the tongue, which is even more impressive. Here Chapter Master forgets that the "good marine, bad marine" routine is usually played with two marines

>Well, that's an interesting request, but I appreciate you being direct with me. Yes, as long as I have access to the person who sent it or foci, talisman or whatever item that was used to send it... Also, how old are we talking about? A few hours? Weeks? Centuries? My powers have limits, you know.
You smile to yourself, knowing his limits very well. After all he's sitting in a warded cell that limits him to only most basic psychic activity. Ixadiel smiles.
>You know, I have an idea. I like that ring that you have on your hand. I see that Fate is going to take it away from you, possibly tomorrow or maybe in a century, but you'll lose it. Give it to me and I'll spill you my secrets, those might bring you more riches and trinkets than this ring ever will...

Whatever we make him do It has to leas us to a secret place, or an accessible person, someone or something. Someone we can pressure for evidence, or someplace where wecan gather evidence

>For someone we just saved from a plague filled, pestilence spewing pushole filled with heretics that would have inevitably killed you and released your soul to she-who-thirsts, you're not showing much appreciation. In fact you're being a massive pompous ass and that transcends all races.

Skargan the cogitator exploded, right?
Can we use it for the Eldar? or it is too damaged?
>>

>We have two items in our posession. a Machine that sends messages, and a vidotape of a man who we are investigating.
If you can tell me something I don't know. Names, places, dates, AND I am convinced you are trying, and telling the truth, you will be free as a bird.
How does that sound to you?

>Please accept my apologies, warrior, but I am old and my knees hurt, I am bad at kneeling, I let younger ones do it. I am the way I am and if I would be anything else I wouldn't be me. You saved me by accident and we both know it. Intent should be rewarded, not content. You have not intended to save me, so I don't intend to thank you. Furthermore, my life can still tragically end here and now if you suddenly decide so. I am under no illusions about that. For that reason I will keep my last asset, my pride, until my last breath or until you convince me otherwise.

For the ring, i offer you a third thing. There is an item, that had been with me for a long time. If you can tell me where i might find it, the ring is yours without a second thought

(ooc I want to know where we left the Wrath of Corax)

>It was humor, I apologize you don't appear to experienced enough to understand it yet, perhaps you should seek enlightenment from your elders, then you will know better then be taken alive by plague worshipers.

Possible typhoid Marry? Might be best to just purge him.

(do you tell him everything?)
>>

I'm worried that such activities provide no useable evidence, since it's from a xenos, and gives said xenos leverage to sow distrust and shit between humans.
>>

>I am bad at kneeling, I let younger ones do it
Servility is not required, only compliance. Even we simple "mon-keigh" know a little about Fate and it appears we were Fated to rescue you. Though our fighting the Ruinous Powers may have been an "accident" there was nothing accidental about my orders not to slay you on sight which a great many of my cousins in other Chapters would have done without hesitation.

If you genuinely wish to be accommodating then consider the following: I know that you are a psyker and I know that you have spent time in close contact with the servants of Chaos aboard that ship. I absolutely can not release you unless I am certain you are not tainted by the powers of Chaos. What say you to that?
>>
>>40630605
We are still considering this one

>>40630666
Everything? defenitley not. We tell him about Ursus, and describe the man, and his family (anyone that could ahve used the cogitator)

We tell him that the people wanted to keep things secret, something they werent supposed to. So we want to know all the secrets, back to a decade at maximum, but the more he can take out from it the better. Especially if it's from Larius.
Where, when, who, what said.
Show the tape only if the cogitatior is not enough.

okay everyone, do we give the ring?
do we give the ring for the location of the Chapter Relic?
do we cast vision to see if the ring was really intented to take from us? (skg can we do that?)
>>
>>40630763
I don't wanna get him involved with the Ursus stuff. Nor do I wanna give him the ring.
>>
>>40630763
I vote on the visions+Wrath of Corax location

>>40630777
I refuse the idea to just throw away all the lives we lost on that damned ship for nothing
and what would he gain with that knowledge? Best if he fucks off to his craftworld again
>>
an anon, or someone vote so we can finish this session

>I wasn't taken, I was betrayed! Don't worry, you'll taste the bitterness of betrayal at some point yourself... Possibly even by those meant to guard your back, those you trusted. Only then will you truly appreciate the words of that Eldar you once captured...
>>40630727
>Unexpectedly wise words, warrior-king. As to regarding me being tainted - let your healers and priests inspect me, I bear no taint either physical or spiritual. Your tainted brethren kept me for something special, however even I am not sure what that was exactly. However I am pretty sure I would have enjoed it less than my conversation with you.

>>40630763
>do we cast vision to see if the ring was really intented to take from us? (skg can we do that?)
Yes, pose a specific question and roll power dice. However bear in mind that him saying that to you already affects your Visions, so that might not be reliable.
>decade at maximum
He will not be able to pick up clear messages older than a year even in the best conditions, he says it himself. Roll 2d100 for him if you wish to proceed with this.

You may roll and let's end the session then

Rolled 37, 4 = 41 (2d100)

I roll, would roleplay, but I have no idea how this works, an my imagination is tired at the moment

From what the Eldar learns, we want the messages, leads they might give us, the source, the recipient etc.

Wonderful, we'll resolve it next time, but I'll tell you a few main things:

+Ixadiel succeeds
+He reads the messages
+Ursus is not the main person behind the deal with the Triarchy, I think you might already guess who's the real mastermind behind it...

session over, thanks for playing

what did the pomptious Eldar recover? Will the Ghost be able to gather evidence? Will they trade the digi-ring for the location of the Chapter Relic? find out next time On CMQ CXV!
