“That’s fair,” you start glancing over the area. “Let’s battle.”

Your eyes dart around the field. There’s a small pond in the middle, taking up about a third of the width of the area. It looks maybe 5-6 feet deep in the middle at most, judging by what you can see. There’s also a tall rock formation on your half, to your left. It's night time, and so the place isn't well lit.

He nods, spins his hat around, and reaches for a Pokeball.

He only has one Pokemon called Poli. You haven’t confirmed what kind it is yet, but a nickname like that is a good hint.

You’re unsure of exactly how to gauge him. He’s grungy and unkempt. Of course, you also know that a trainer can’t always been judged by their looks.

He’s the former champion, sure, but from what it sounds like, he hasn’t done serious training for a long time.

At the same time, you see Vernon throwing his Pokemon. It’s a Poliwrath!

You see how some people say that trainers and Pokemon can sometimes look alike.

“A Gyarados, huh?” He squints, “did you raise it from a Magikarp?”

“No,” you tell him, not seeing a reason to lie.

“I’m impressed,” he keeps eying levi up and down. “you’ve got guts, I’ll give you that.”

Poliwrath fires off several blasts of water high into the air as it steps forward. You lose sight of them. Wow, they went high. It must be pretty strong, just like you’d expect.

Let’s see... from what you can see thanks to studying abilities so much, it’s ability is Water Absorb. But there’s something off about it you can’t quite figure out.

“Dragon Dance! Pump yourself up!”

Levi roars at your command and starts her dance right away. Before, she used to be defiant and only resentfully follow a command. Now, she seems to take pride in taking her commands well, eager to show you how powerful she is. In fact, she’s doing it beautifully this time around. It’s almost hypnotic.

“Belly Drum, Poli!”

The enemy Poliwrath starts pounding on it’s chest hard. You’re very familiar with this move. The user boosts its attack power to extreme levels, but at the cost of half it’s health.

Wait! Of course! Those water blasts he fired into the air are to heal Poliwrath right after.

Leviathan swings around, giving an extra strong tail flourish to end her Dragon Dance. Using the flat of her tail, she generates a strong gust of wind that throws an incoming water blast away and it lands beside Poliwrath instead of on it.

Levi’s eyes glow as she roars once again. She looks like some sort of demon now. It’s almost pumping you up too! You suspect she got more than the usual boost out of that.

But Poliwrath can’t be underestimated with a Belly Drum boost.

“6 seconds until the next one,” Vernon tells you. That’s right. He shot off more than one. You counted 4, you think.

This won’t be easy. Levi doesn’t have a diverse movepool. You’ll need to be creative or lucky to pull this off. Maybe both.

Levi leaps into the sky with terrifying speed. It’s so odd to see something so big move even faster than Vlad.

Poliwrath’s eye’s glow. Not a fierce, primal glow like Levi’s, but a cold, calculating one.

Levi is just about to reach her apex. You need to think fast. Is he really going to try to hit her? Levi moves faster, but you have a feeling Poli might just need a single hit, even though Levi hasn’t taken any damage at all.

This is also the perfect time to take out the rest of those water blasts. If you do that though, the Bounce won’t hit as hard.

Time freezes as you try to figure out your best move. You can try to mega-evolve, giving Levi a strong boost all around and maybe allowing her to take a hit from that Poliwrath. If you do though, she loses the extra power from being a Flying type Pokemon using a flying type move. Screwing it up too badly might mess with her concentration. It's a gamble, but is it one you have to take?

The rain comes down with Levi. She’s aiming directly at the Poliwrath, murder in her eyes and unfathomable power all over the rest of her. This is going to be intense.

You see Vernon flinch, but just for a second. “It’s too fast! Poli! Switch abilities and Mega Kick!”

Poliwrath skin seems to morph almost imperceptibly before your eyes. He didn’t mispeak. It actually changed it’s ability to Swift Swim!

Poliwrath leaps into the air, twirling up it’s kick. You know that move is hard to land, but he just used Mind Reader, so it can’t miss!

It’s down to speed. Levi is firing down like a rocket. She makes a path through the rain, showing a trail of where she’s been.

Both Pokemon collide at an insane speed. There’s huge explosion of water as they connect. You try to look, but the expanding wall of water and wind nearly pushes you back and you instinctively blink.

Poliwrath shoots down into the pond, just on the shallow part. He forms a crater on impact. Leviathan straightens out as she comes down to a landing, looking down on the other water Pokemon and confirming her victory. Poliwrath is struggles upwards for a second, but too slowly. The concentrated water blasts fall down, one of them hitting it on the head.

Vernon retrieves his Pokemon. He mutters something about a good battle. He’s clearly pretty stunned at the outcome.

“Dragon Dance,” he says to himself. “That wasn’t a regular Dragon Dance. She moved too fast, even for Swift Swim.”

Levi roars in triumph as the rain starts to beat down big time now. You’re sure the entire neighborhood probably got woken up from that.

Off the current topic, and I've probaby been thinking about this for too long, but I have figured out what I want to do with Robin's mom.

We fight her for the Championship, beat her to within an inch of defeat. And then, right before we land the final blow, we forfeit the match and walk away.

If she asks us why, we tell her she's right. It's a worthless title. And it fits her.

if anything, the boost should probably be relatively minor. maybe a chance for a flinch? or hell, maybe a chance to activate Intimidate a second time on a high roll. it should definitely be something related to how fuckin spooky gyarados are.

You give him a minute and turn to Levi. “I’m really proud of you. That was amazing!”

Levi looks away, uncomfortable with your praise in front of someone new.

“Aww, come on, Levi. Don’t be shy.” You can't help but tease her a bit

She looks indignant at the thought that she could possibly be shy. She rears up and again and inhales, preparing to roar even louder. You quickly retrieve her before she can. For all you know, the police could be on the way from all the explosive noise.

“Good idea,” Vernon says. “We should probably get out of here. Can I walk you to the Pokemon center?”

You nod and you both start making your way back.

You can’t hold your question back any more. “How the hell did you change abilities? What was that?”

He smiles, just a little. “The result of years of training. It takes a lot out of him, but it’s useful in a pinch. I was hoping it would be my trump card against the champion when I came back into the scene.” He laughs. “Ego aside, I know I could beat the woman that took my title all those years ago. I can’t beat who she is now, but I know that would have been enough. You beating me? Well, I think you might have what it takes.”

He smiles and gives a lazy wave as he walks away into the night.

You look down at the legendary Pokemon resting on your lap. “Come on, Meloetta, let’s go make some music.”

She stirs awake and makes a happy sound. Both of you head outside into the rain and look for somewhere you can play. It takes awhile, but eventually you come across an empty warehouse. Someone without your...background probably wouldn’t have noticed it, but you have an eye for places like this.

There are a few holes in the ceiling where the water gets in, but it at least won’t keep you from playing.

Meloetta looks up, waiting for you to take the lead. You put the ancient flute to your lips. You feel like recent events have inspired you somehow.
