Welcome to Star Dust Quest! Here, you will follow the exploits of Gavin Ashworth and his ship crew, along with all of the shenanigans they get into.

Note: Rules for dice rolls have been updated to emphasize that for actions, players will first vote on the action and -then- roll 1d100s after I ask them to. I will take the first 3 rolls and determine the pass/fail in a best-of-three basis. If at least one of the two pass/fails are a crit, then the action is a crit.

Last time, on Star Dust Quest...

The trip to Ragnarok was long and more or less uneventful, but it allowed you to get your much-needed rest, especially after that hangover and getting your ass kicked by a supersoldier. Some shenanigans with the crew later, and you found yourself in a near-deserted and in-the-middle-of-nowhere Blackhawk Elite base after some mass retaliation they've undergone. At least your contact, Dani, accepted the contract anyways. Poor girl, having to fend off a vicious band of former-unsavoury-colleagues-of-Ley'ra all by herself with half a platoon to run the base. And, you offered to help her.

“...And then he asked for two-thirds of the share,” Ley'ra says with a scowl on her face.

“No...!” Dani guffaws from her place on top of the box, leaning forward with enticement. Beside her sits Ivan, glancing between the two as they talk.

“Yup,” Ley'ra explains, rolling her eyes. Huddled in a circle is your entire crew (minus Comet). After having gathered them up, you brought them into the nearby hangar where you met Dani. “So my squad leader, Martin, walked up to him and backhanded him in the face. Then he fell to the floor, and Martin said, 'I think we'll take ninety.'”

“No! In front of his squad?”

“Yup. There were twice as many Hounds as us, but they knew they couldn't do anything.”

“Well, if they didn't do shit, I wouldn't expect them to take any.”

“Yeah. Martin was nice enough to give them ten percent, but the tensions there were high. I thought for a moment there that they were gonna pull their guns on us.”

“The more I hear about them, the more I hate them.”

Looking around, you see some Blackhawk workers towing in the third dunebuggy--yours. You did buy one for yourself.

“So, what's the roster looking like?” you ask Dani.

“Ah... like I said, half my platoon's gone. Most of them here are running the base, so we've only got my immediate squad...” she says, looking to the side.

“...And how many is that?”

“There's me, Devon, Stem, Tac....” She pauses to think with her eyes to the ceiling. “Three more. Seven.”

“Huh. That's not as bad as I thought.”

“Hey, I did what I could. Who are you bringing?”

>Ley'ra. Doesn't look like she likes these Hounds. She wants blood.
>Ivan. He has a rifle, perhaps he could prove a good choice.

“Alright, so,” you say, looking at your crew. You look to Ley'ra, first. “Ley'ra, I'm definitely taking you along.” She nods her head in determination. Then, you glance over to Ivan. “Ivan, you have a rifle, correct? You can come along, too.”

“Yes, comrade,” he says, nodding his head as well. “I have been looking to stretch my legs, I have not had the taste of combat for awhile.”

You look over to Viktor standing beside Ivan sitting on the box. “And Viktor, I'd like you to come along as well.”

“As you wish, Gavin,” he says, giving a little bow.

Finally, you look at Beth. She blinks. “And Beth, we could use a medic.”

She as a slightly shocked look on her face, but after a moment of thought, she nods. “I guess this would look good on my resume, huh?” At that, everyone in the circle lets out a chuckle.

“Neat. That's a lot of meat for the grinder,” Dani says, hopping down from her spot. “I'll go tell my group to get ready. You guys should, too.” With one final glance to you, Dani walks off.

“Right.” You nod. “Troy and Pete, hold down the ship. Keep your comms up so we can communicate in case we need anything.”

“Sure thing, Gavin,” Troy says, nodding along with Slash. Speaking of, you look over to your info-sec official.

“By the way, how's the progress on that datachip?” you ask, earning a smile from him.

“Well, depending on how long you lads take, I may actually have some results to show you by the time you get back,” he answers, gleefully.

“That's music to my ears,” you sing, bringing up your smart ring to access the Blackhawk Market. “Alright guys, I'm going to see what gear I can nab. You can all go get ready.”

What do you buy?

Armour for everyone, brecher grenades+flashbang
>>
>>40601064
How are the Bullet proof vest and Survialist defense ratings?

Survivalist is 4/10 protection, 5/10 mobility.

>>
>>40601008

I'll suggest a suit of Infantry for Ley'ra, and Full-Body Tactical for ourself and Beth.

>>
>>40601141
So we could get Full Body Tactical for Us, Leyra and Bethany for +1 protection

>>40601162

Yeah not a bad idea.

I still kinda want to get some explosives though
>>
>>40601141

>>40601108
Thirded, and also buy a breecher.
>>
>>40601141
Oh so everyone is pretty much fine for armor since Full Tac is only +1 Def over the vest.

Buy x5 Frag grenades
>>
>>40601008
>>40601200
I'll support this guys idea.
>>
This armor is kinda meh, too little improvement for too much money.
If our teammates want, they can request explosives, I guess, or weapons.
What I'd like to look at, actually, is getting a drone. Even a basic one could be an invaluable asset, what with its flight.

With the market menu on your smart ring up, you look over to your crew. Seems that Troy and Slash had left for the ship, which leaves Ley'ra, Viktor, Ivan and Beth.

“What do you guys think?” you ask them, showing them the hologram menu. “I want to gear you up before we go.”

The four of them huddle around your outstretched wrist and peer at the menu.

“All I've got is a pistol, but I think I'd like the FD39 Echo or Ogoun M31 if I'm going with you guys on this,” Beth says. Ivan nods his head.

“Yes, I think Bethany should get something.” He backs up a bit to let the others look. “I think I am good for gear, comrades.”

“Me too, though a sidearm would be nice,” Viktor says.”

“I think an upgrade to full body tactical armour would be an improvement,” Ley'ra suggests. “I also think we should get some grenades. We're going to be going into a cave network, so they'll definitely come in handy.”

Hey QM, I wanted to ask a question. Not sure if it was asked already, but whatever.

What's the deal with plasma weapon "calibers" being measured in nanometers? I'd understand if those were lasers — the numbers sound like wavelengths. But plasma?
>>
>>40601309
Give Viktor a sidearm from our armory (I think we have those anyways
A crate of frag grenades, the echo for beth and
Infantry for Ley'ra total 130k
Bring the defense drones, possibly assign one to beth
>>
>>40601391
They're ejected by diodes, though they work different than normal laser diodes. They're generally larger for plasma weapons in nm.
>>
My original vote was >>40601200
>>40601309
With this new input:
Full-body Tac for Ley'ra, Beth, and ourselves.
An Ogoun for Beth. As medic, she should have something in case she gets cornered somehow.
A crate each of Frags and Flashbangs, for tactical flexibility.
And a Daybreak for Viktor I suppose.
Total cost: 125k
>>
>>40601323
Who's usually in charge of controlling the drones? Or are they capable of following simple orders on their own?
>>
>>40601524
>Or are they capable of following simple orders on their own?
Pretty much this. From your smart ring, you can just set them on different settings for general purposes (assault, passive, defensive) and you can also give specific orders like move to a certain position or fire at a certain object.

Seconded.

SDA, a lore question, if you don't mind.
Suppose a merc decides to terminate a contract with their employer, for whatever reason. What's the accepted practice on weapons and armor that the employer bought for the merc during their service: does the merc get to take the stuff with them, or is it considered employer's property?

Legally, it depends on who rightfully bought it. If you buy it for them straight from your wallet, it's yours. If they bought it themselves with their own money, it's theirs. If you gave them money and they bought it, it's still technically theirs.

>>

We'll use this equip for the other mission anyway, and we are getting payed after we do this
>>

It'll be dent, but we are getting paid after this. It will also help with next mission we have planned I think.

The payout on the Faraday missions is pretty substantial, so I'm going to guess that means the difficulty is being upped a bit. It'll be good to have this gear.

Ok, it seems SDA is writing the update. In the meantime, let's decide on the grenade loadout. I don't think we're supposed to lug all the 45 grenades with us.
>>
>>40602108

Kinda depends on how the QM wants us to allocate space. Do we have a bandoleer we can strap the grenades to? If no, is it safe to say that we can put a few in unused pockets? I can't imagine anything short of ten grenades on our person would slow us down.
>>
>>40602108
Grenades for everybody who knows how? 2 or 1 of each?
>>
>>40602108
>>40602160
>>40602170
I would say that since everyone has at least tactical armour, you can all carry up to six grenades each. Is that reasonable?
>>
>>40602245
Yes it does.
>>
>>40602245

Wonderful.

Give Ly'rahrahrah 4x of each, 2x of each for everyone else.
>>
>>40602245
Sure.

>>40602170
I don't think we need so many flashes or HEs. Remember that we're going into a cave system. Flashbangs are going to hit both the enemies and us with the sound component in the confined tunnels, and HEs are liable to cause cave-ins, so I doubt we're going to use them too often. So first, I'd limit flashes and HEs to one per person.

Second, maybe we should rearrange the 'nades according to squad roles. Like, Ley'ra is going to be on point, which means more exposure to bullets, so I'd rather not give her HEs at all. OTOH, Beth is probably going to be hanging back, which makes her a good person to be carrying stuff that explodes and buries everybody when hit.
Or maybe that's just dumb.
>>
>>40602245
x3 Frag

Purchase confirmed.

“Alright, I ordered it. Should arrive to our ship at any moment,” you say to your crew after confirming your order with them. “Viktor, you can take one of the pistols from the armoury.”

“That seems sound,” he replies.

“We all good?” you say, bringing in your wrist and closing the hologram. Looking around to your crew, they all nod back to you. “Remember, I don't want to force any of you into this if you don't want. I suspect this will be quite a fight.”

Everyone goes silent as you look to each of them individually. None of them make any move to object, and all of them seem determined.

“Alright. Ley'ra, you're going to be taking point, since you have the most experience and best equipment out of all of us. I'll be right behind you with Viktor and Ivan.”

“Okay,” she responds, nodding once.

“And Beth, stay in the back. You're there to keep us alive, so we need to keep you alive first.”

“Aye-aye,” she replies with a smirk.

“Okay, let's all go get geared up. We'll meet back here in 15 minutes,” you announce, and with that, you all leave the hangar and walk back to your ship.

The clouds seem to have brightened a bit, the day having progressed through the misty morning. When you get back to your ship, you catch a glimpse of a Blackhawk worker dropping off a wooden crate full of equipment on top of the hover cart from your ship, Troy standing beside it. After a small exchange of waves, he drives off.

“You're always on top of things, aren't you?” you say to Troy as your group approaches him.

“What can I say, I'm used to this sort of stuff,” he answers, bringing the cart up the ramp to your ship.

The five of you follow him as he brings it towards your armory. With the help of Troy, Viktor and Ivan, you lift the crate off of the cart and place it down on the ground.

“Anyone have a crowbar?” Ivan asks, looking around the rather large wooden crate for a way to open it.
>>
>>40602448
Prison style (in her butt)
>>
>>40602457
“No need,” Troy says, bending down and gripping the lip of the crate's lid with his mechanical arm. “Stand back.” After a single heave with no budge, he grips the lid with his normal hand and heaves again. After a small grunt, the top of the crate almost explodes off, sending splinters at Beth who recoils. “Sorry,” he says sheepishly, dropping the crate lid.

“Bleh,” she replies, shaking her head.

Inside you see three metal boxes, presumably the grenade crates. Troy lifts each one up and places them on the metal table next to him, and then opens each to reveal the frags, flash-bangs and hi-ex grenades you purchased. Meanwhile, you see Viktor go off to the side of the armory to pick up one of the extra side arms you purchased from before, and Bethany and Ley'ra sift through the crate contents to get at the armour.

You already have your revolver holstered, so you go over to the side of the armoury and pick up your rifle.

“Have you ever been in combat before, Gavin?” Viktor asks from beside you, examining the pistol he picked up.

“Not really, but I did fight an experimental supersoldier in a VR room not to long ago,” you answer, examining your rifle. “I've also taken basic firearm safety courses back at home, and have gone to the range more than a few times.”

“Fair enough.” After checking every nook and cranny of his gun, Viktor holsters it up on his right side. “Just remember to always keep your head in tact and your eyes open. Your mind will try to focus, but focus too much and you'll get tunnel vision.”

“I'll keep that in mind, Viktor.” With everything on your rifle in check, you turn around. Ley'ra has her new infantry armour between her arms while Bethany holds her new shotgun up, her new armour slung over her shoulder.

“Alright, let's get geared up, then.”

What grenades do you take?
You and each of your crew has 6 grenade slots. You have 15 frags, 15 flash-bangs, and 15 hi-ex available.

“Alright!” Dani says, looking over to the dunebuggies to her left. “We've got three buggies and 12 people, including your five. Only four can ride each, so one of you is gonna have to ride with one of us. Devon, Stem and I have an empty seat--which one of you is gonna come along?”

Turning around, you look to Viktor. “Can you go ride with them?” you ask him, and he simply nods.

“I sure can,” he replies, stepping forward. From behind Dani, one of the other Blackhawks steps up to meet him. He's rather tall, coming to at least a good six inches above you. At least he's at level with Viktor.

“Stem,” he says, reaching his hand out, which Viktor shakes. “I'll be the driver.”

“Viktor,” Viktor replies. “I do merc work, usually for ship gunning.”

“Sweet. Can you gun a buggy?”

“Done it more than a few times, friend. Of course I can.”

The two walk off towards one of the buggies to get familiar with the hardware. Meanwhile, you bring out a small hologram panel of controls from your smart-ring, displaying several options to control your personal defence drones. With a small tap on the 'move' button, the two small combat drones fly in from outside, hovering to a stop right behind you.

“Well shit, those will come in handy,” Dani whistles.

“Yup, got them for free from the Feds,” you reply.

“Right. Well, everyone get to your vehicles, let's get out of here ASAP,” she says, walking off to Stem and Viktor. The other Blackhawk soldiers move to walk over to their buggies, and you turn to your crew.

Out of Beth, Ley'ra, Ivan and yourself, who will be driving the buggy and who will mount the machine gun at the back?
>>

When we hire people in the furture, could we hire them when they have their own gear and equipment, like hiring a pilot with their own dropship and such?

Idle musings: I really want an FD102. It's probably not as good as this [1], but should be pretty close, what with that red dot in explosive power.

“Okay, which of you is comfortable with driving a buggy? And gunning?” you ask the group. Almost immediately, Ley'ra answers.

“I can do either,” she says. “I've done both for the Legion.”

“I have driven trucks and vehicles before in stations,” Ivan answers. “And I used to race them with my comrades when there was nothing to do. I don't think controls for these buggies are much different.”

“I can drive, though the extent of my driving skill doesn't exceed city driving in a car,” Beth responds.

“Alright, that seems straight forward,” you say after nodding a few times. “Ivan's driving and Ley'ra's on the gun. Beth, you can have the back seat while I'll ride shotgun.”

“Alright,” Beth responds. With your roles assigned, you all head over to your own dunebuggy and get in. You hear Ley'ra hop onto the back of the buggy to check out the machine gun while Ivan takes a seat on the driver's side. With a tap of your button, you signal your drones to place themselves in the back with Ley'ra.

“How's the gun back there?” you say, turning around in your seat.

“It looks good. There's plenty of ammunition back here,” she replies, looking over the gun to you.

Bethany hops into the back seat, her shotgun held tight between her hands, a wide-eyed look on her face.

“You doing okay?” you ask her, concerned.

“Yeah... yeah. This is just the first time I've been in the heat of combat,” she replies with a small smile. “Thanks for asking.” A gloved hand reaches over from the back and pats her on the head. Bethany giggles. “Thanks, Ley'ra.”

“You guys look comfy,” Dani says, coming up to your buggy from the side. “Are you guys good for comms?”

You look over to the rest of your crew, who all nod. “Everyone here's got Nexus,” you reply.
>>
>>40604521
“Alright. I'll invite you all to our secure channel,” she says, raising up her right arm and tapping a few things on the screen on her gauntlet. Sure enough, you receive a message on your smart-ring and you raise your hand to accept it. You see the rest of your crew do the same. “Cool, you're all in. We'll depart shortly, alright?”

“Right,” you respond. “How exactly is this going to go down?”

“What do you mean?”

“Is there a plan? Do we have a map?”

Dani merely smiles. “Hahah, yeah. No. Kind of. We just know where it is and that it's a shitty cave.”

“I don't think I like the sound of that,” you say with a sceptical look.

“I'm making it sound worse than it is,” she laughs. “It's a rather deep tunnel network, but we've done this hundreds of times for other times. Trust me when I say we know what we're doing.”

“I suppose trust is all we can hold you to.”

“I'm paying you 120 bills for this. Just stay competent and we--”

“Aaaaaaaaaaaa--” a new voice begins to drone, cutting her off.

“Josho, oh my god,” Dani yells before you realize the voice is coming from the comms. Your ring projects the voices so it sounds like it's near your ear. “Tac, can you shut him up?”

“Aye, sarge,” another voice responds.

“Why are we bringing him again?” someone else says.

“He's got the breachers,” another one replies.

“Just take them from him, then,” the second voice replies to that.

“Guys, shut up. I'm gonna revoke your speak if you don't shut the fuck up,” Dani snaps.

“Dayumn gurl,” one voice says.

“Who the fuck said that?!”

“That was Josho.”

“Christ.”

“Guys, I have to take a leak.”

“Then go, god damn!”

“Shit, wa--”

The channel goes silent as Dani silences everyone. From your seat, you see her frustratingly tapping options on her gauntlet.

“Alright, since you're all assholes, I'm leaving voice to myself, Devon, Tac and Gavin.” She looks up to you. “Sorry, these guys are pieces of shit.”

“No comment,” you say to her.

“I'll give you voice so only your crew can hear. When we get inside the caves, you can stick with them.”

“Sounds good.”

Dani lets out a sigh and shakes her head, lowering her arm. “So, you ready to go?”

“Of course, Dani. Lead the way,” you respond.

“Awesome. You're going to be the third buggy, so you stay in the back. Can you handle that, Ivan?” Dani says, looking over to him.

“Hahah, I am looking forward to driving on ground. I am used to driving inside stations,” he replies.

“I'll take that as a yes.” She walks off, but you can still hear her voice through the comms. “Stem, let's go. Tac, you're front, so you lead.”

“Aye,” Tac responds on the comms.

The loud revving of an engine echoes through the hangar, joined by a second shortly after. Looking over to Ivan, you see him ignite your buggy's engine and then revs it himself. Before you know it, one of the buggies from the back zooms past you, followed by the second one with Viktor and Dani.

“Alright, let's go,” you say to Ivan, who nods.

“Here we go, comrades!” he yells amidst the engine roar as he suddenly zooms your buggy through the hangar. The pale daylight washes over you when you clear the exit of the building, following closely behind the car in front of you at relatively high speeds.

The buildings of the base zoom past you as the buggies take you down the main concrete road. When you come to the landing pads, you circle around the one with your ship on it before ejecting from the base proper, onto the wilderness beyond.

The drive is relatively smooth against the flat permafrost ground, even if you're all driving at high speeds. Snow patches prove easy to overcome with the large tires of the cars, and the trees are sparse enough for you to not worry about them. Several medium-sized mountains dot the distance, but the landscape is otherwise just fairly hilly. Nothing you can't drive over.

“So, why don't you give a little rundown, Devon?” Dani says over the comms. In response, a man with a sharp voice speaks up.

“Right. So, as most of you know, some dogs have held up in a cave somewhere nearby and have been showing a less than neighborly presence,” he says, genuinely sounding pissed. “I don't rightly know how they got here, but they have some balls to get on a planet owned by Blackhawks.”

“They are quite balls of steel,” Ivan comments from next to you. Beth lets out a laugh.

“Whatever the reason why they're here, they weren't invited,” Devon continues. “Recon tells us there's some two, maybe three dozen in total. Heavily armed, but shitty hardware. The cave network they're in isn't too complicated, but it does split near the entrance to a fork. We're not sure what lies beyond, only that the left path has large energy signatures coming from within. It could be that they found something in there, so I want you all to exercise caution. The right path appears to be where all their weapons are stored. That means we'll be splitting up—I imagine that Tac will take his group for one end, and Gavin will take the other. Which path are you guys going to go?”

“Doesn't matter to me,” a man responds through the comms, presumably Tac. “Gavin, why don't you choose?”

>Left, where the energy signature seems to be coming from.

So I just went and rewatched Starship Troopers. Because hey, why not. And let me tell you, aside from some low-res screens, that movie is still as good in 2015 as it was in 1997. And I don't care if it's not faithful to the book of whatever, it's a damn good movie.

You share a curious glance with Ivan before he looks back in front of him. “I'll take the left path,” you say.

“Alright, we've got the right, then,” Tac responds.

“Now I am curious to see for myself,” Ivan pipes up beside you.

“Good. First thing's first,” Devon speaks up again. “We gotta get inside. They're gonna try to defend the entrance as much as they can, and as it's the only entrance, it'll be difficult to breach through. So, we're going to deploy on the opposite hill and our buggies will do drive bys around the cave entrance to whittle them down. Everyone else will suppress fire and move forward, and hopefully we can get close enough to force 'em back in their shithole. Everyone good?”

“Yeah,” Tac responds.

“Yep, we're good,” you say yourself.

“Wonderful. We'll be there shortly,” Devon responds, and the channel goes silent.

You turn to Ivan. “You hear that? Once we get there, you're dropping us off at the hill opposite of the cave.”

“I know, comrade. I heard.”

“That means you're with me, Beth,” you say, turning around to her, and she nods. You look up to Ley'ra. “And you're gonna be gunning from the car while Ivan brings you close.” She nods as well.

You turn back to face forwards and bring up your smart-ring, browsing for your contacts back at the ship. When you see Slash, you hit the button to call him. After a short wait, he answers.

“Hello, Captain,” he says.

“Hi, Pete. And you can call me Gavin.”

“Sure thing.”

“So, I just wanted to ask if you're able to get video feed from the drones?”

“Hmm, give me a second...” He drifts off, and you hear him press several keys on his keyboard. “It looks like I can, Gavin. I can also control them from here. What will you have me do?”

“Good. I'd like it if you could monitor that while we're in the cave? Alert us to anything that the drones see.”

“I can do that.”

Slash's approval: +1

“Thanks, Pete. I'll ask Dani to add you in to our comms.” You tweak a few options on your smart-ring so you're speaking back on the Blackhawk channel. Meanwhile, the buggies are now driving adjacent to the side of a rather tall hill, its tall rocky structure passing by to your right. The gravelly ground with small patches of snow zooms by to your left. “Dani, it's Gavin.”

“Hi.”

“I've got a guy back at the ship who can monitor what my drones see. Is it alright if you add him in to the comms?”

“Sure can, sounds like a good idea.” Several moments pass until you see that Slash is now listening in on your comms.

“Just around this bend, mates,” Devon speaks up. “Everybody get your shit checked, we'll likely be deploying in less than three minutes.”

You look behind you to an anxious looking Beth. “Hear that? Just stick close to me and we'll get through this, alright?”

She takes in a deep breath, her clutch not having released on her shotgun. You'd be lying if you said you weren't nervous yourself. “Okay, Gavin.”

Turning forwards, you see that the hill is indeed beginning to bend towards the right.

“Get ready brothers and sisters, we're about to hit them hard,” Devon says. Behind you, you hear Ley'ra shift on her spot, no doubt ready to fire at a moment's notice. “I don't give a shit if they don't fire first. You see em, you pop em.”

Again, you share a glance with Ivan, who merely shrugs. That's when machine gun fire alerts you to the present, the first car having opened fire on something. Before you know it, your car passes by the last of the cliff face, the ground suddenly turning into a fairly steep uphill. Sure enough at the top, you see a cave entrance. Sandbags and metal barriers line the place, and there are several people running about them.
>>
>>40607599
The second car lets out a burst from its machine gun, and you're not surprised when Ley'ra follows suit without hesitating. As your cars swiftly zoom by the base of the hill shooting upwards, the bandits at the top all take cover. But as soon as you had shown your entrance, the cave mouth disappears and your car is driving alongside another cliff face.

“Well, they know we're here,” Dani says over the comms.

“Alright Tac, take us over to the hill,” Devon says. Shortly after, all of your cars slow down before turning around, this time going up the hill that runs adjacent to the cave mouth.

You find yourself pressed against the back of your seat as Ivan drives you up the hill, pumping as much gas into the climb as possible. When you reach the top, the car levels out and you find that you can see for miles around you, save for the larger hill to your left.

The cars suddenly slow down and you see several people from the front cars hop out.

“Everyone but gunners and drivers out! Let's go, let's go!” Dani orders, and you follow it to a tee.

Hopping out, you find yourself beside Beth who immediately crouches down. Dani, Devon and two other Blackhawk soldiers do the same, crouching behind the hill overlooking the cave entrance and you follow suit. Quickly, after ordering your combat drones to stay with you, they fly over to your side. After a few burst fires from the machine guns, the buggies take off.

Peaking over the ground in front of you, you see that the cave entrance and its defences are a good two hundred meters away. However, bullets ricocheting across the ground around you cause you to duck. You come face to face with Dani, who gives you a toothy smile.

“So, what's it gonna be, Dani?” Devon asks from behind Dani.

“Mmf. Once the buggies circle around and come back for another drive-by, we'll open fire and advance.”

You peak over the hill to see the buggies already approaching the foot of the hill. “Looks like we should--”
>>
>>40607622
“Fire!” Dani yells, popping up and firing her rifle. Devon and the two other Blackhawks stand up and follow suit. “Devon, Loch, go!”

You pop up as well, but before you can fire off a round with your rifle, Devon looks straight at you. “Come on, brother! Let's go!”

“Right!” you say, stepping over the peak of the hill. You turn around to Beth. “Stay here,” you tell her before taking off. Immediately, Devon and who you assume is Loch bolt down the hill, and you follow them closely behind.

One of the buggies had stopped in place at the foot of the hill, and on it you see Viktor unleashing a hail of fire from his machine gun. You look to the top of the hill to see all of the bandits ducked under cover, giving you an opening to advance.

As you get close to the buggy, Devon breaks off to the right where a large boulder rests. You and Loch follow, and all three of you press yourselves up against the rock. That's when Devon signals to the driver of the buggy to go, and as soon as Viktor stops firing, they take off.

“Alright, that gives us some time to check if everything's in tact,” Devon says, panting. You feel your legs burning already, the steep hill having proved to be difficult to climb down. That's when you hear yells from up the hill, the bandits realizing that they aren't being shot at anymore.

Looking to your right, you see the buggies already quickly approaching.

“Get ready mates, it's our turn to give suppresive fire,” Devon says, shouldering his rifle. You give him a nod.

When the buggies get close enough, Devon pops out from cover and begins to fire his rifle uphill.

Loch pops out of cover and joins in on Devon on the surppressive fire. Soon after, the buggies get into place at the foot of the hill and unleash their machine gun fire uphill. A quick glance to the opposite hill shows that Dani, Beth and the other soldier have begun to run down the hill.

Instead of joining Devon and Loch in firing your guns, you bring up your smart-ring menu and quickly select assault mode for your drones. Immediately, you see your drones pop up from the hill that Dani and Beth were behind and fly up to a considerable height towards the cave mouth. They begin to descend, sending out loud burst fires from their machine guns.

“Hah, they're scrambling,” you hear Pete say on the comms. “I see a good four or five of them behind the large metal barrier to the right of the cave mouth. Another two or three behind the sandbags on the left of the cave entrance, I can't really see, the drones are moving too fast.”

“Have any been killed, yet?” you ask.

“No, Gavin.”

Stepping out from cover beside Devon, you pull out a frag grenade from your bandolier. Looking up, you see the flat metal barrier that Slash was talking about. You pull the pin from the grenade, wind up your arm, and throw it with all your might.

To your (and everyone beside you) delight, the grenade flies right over the metal barrier and lands behind it. Screams alert you to the bandits' displeasure, and an explosion follows right after. A small cloud of smoke rises from behind the barrier.

All three buggies take off immediately afterwards, and you, Devon and Loch retreat back behind the boulder. There, you see that Dani, Beth and the other Blackhawk have successfully made it.

Beth is lunched over and leaning against the rock, panting really hard. You walk up to her and pat her on the back.

“Jeez... hah... that was... exhilarating...” she says through her breaths. Dani laughs.
>>
>>40608690
“Heh, come on, we're just getting started. Damn good throw there, Gavin,” she says, leaning over to look behind you. You look back and see the buggies approaching again.

“What now, Dani?” Devon asks.

“We do it again. I think it's safe for the cars to park here, we're gonna smash through their shitty defences now.”

Up above, you see the drones descending again. Devon looks back to you and Loch.

“Are you ready? We're going to run straight into them, so keep your wits about you,” he says.

Since the drones have shields, even if they're only good for small arms fire, could they lead the charge a few meters ahead of everyone? That and when the enemy are pinned they will probably not expect something to hover over their barricades. No one ever looks up haha.

The three buggies zoom past you and stop at the foot of the hill, their guns blazing. You're pretty sure that the bandit defences can't take much more of this.

With a few taps on your smart-ring menu, you order your drones to pull upwards and give recon. Sure enough, they begin to fly up to a good enough height before circling the area.

“Alright lads,” Slash speaks up from the comms through the gunfire. “Looks like your grenade downed three of them. Another one behind the sandbags seems to have taken a hit from your combined firing. There's two still behind the sandbags, they've got a machine gun there. Another three are behind the barrier, and two are inside the cave entrance a little bit. There's still plenty, but I they seem disoriented already.”

“Alright, this is our chance. Let's go!” Devon says, shouldering his rifle and stepping out from his cover.

“Ho-ah!” Loch responds and follows suit, and you follow behind them as they charge up the hill along the right flank.

The bullets continue to pelt the bandit defences as you sprint. When you get close enough, you pull out a flash-bang from your bandolier.

“Hold it, I'm gonna throw a flash-bang!” you yell into the comms. Devon and Loch immediately crouch down as you pull the pin on the grenade and lob it overhead, watching as the grenade flies towards the side of the metal wall. A bright, loud flash is soon heard, and you hear some more screams. “Go!” you yell.

“Alright, everyone, hold your fire!” You hear Dani command over the comms. “Let Devon, Loch and Gavin clear out the entrance! Pill, you're behind me. Let's go!”

You crest over the top of the climb and, with Devon leading the charge, storm past the metal barrier where the bandits are behind. Loch follows immediately and then you.
>>
>>40609451
You see several bloodied bodies on the floor and the cave entrance to your right. Devon's gun goes off, and you hear a few bodies slump to the floor. Loch's gun fires off a few rounds as well towards the sandbags. You face the right, and there you see two disgruntled bandits, rifles in their hands. Their eyes are squinted and one of them is holding a hand to his right. Both of them still have their rifles in their hands.

With your rifle ready and aimed, you finally fire off a few rounds from your rifle. Your bullets pierce right through the both of them, and they both slump to the floor in a bloody mess. Your Ivan rifle may have been cheap, but damn if its rep wasn't frightening, regardless.

You pan around to look for more bandits, but you see that Devon and Loch have both cleared out what remains of their entrance defence force. Six bodies litter the floor in front of you, three more lie by the sandbags, and then there are the two by the entrance that you've taken care of. You try not to pay attention to the mangled pools of blood, but the red doesn't do much to help with avoiding your attention.

“Alright there?” Dani's voice says, panting while she makes her way up the hill.

“All clear, we've got the entrance guarded,” Devon replies, his rifle pointed towards the entrance. Loch presses up against the wall next to the cave mouth and you stay there beside him.

After waiting for a few moments, Dani and the rest of the squad gets up over the hill. Immediately, Beth's face lingers on the dead bodies around, no doubt that she's uncomfortable. You are too, but you know that this is a reality you're going to have to face time and time again. You inwardly smile when you see her take in a deep breath, close her eyes and open them again to a determined look. She's invested in this as much as you are.

Ley'ra, Viktor and Ivan soon join your group, and you all huddle around the wall next to the cave entrance.

“Okay, so, Gavin's group will go down the left path on the fork, and Tac's group to the right,” Dani says, looking around to find Tac. The man in question nods his head. “You all look the same behind your helmets.”
>>
>>40610007
“I said we should get name tags,” one of them says.

“Shut up, Josho,” Dani responds. “Devon and I will go with Gavin's group, the rest of you are with Tac. Right?”

“Right,” several of them respond.

"By the way Gavin, I'm glad we brought you guys along. You guys are a hell of a lot of help," Dani compliments.

"What can I say? I only hire cool people."

You look to your crew, and they all give you reassuring nods. Beth lets out a chuckle. With a few taps on your smart-ring, you call your drones to come down to you.

>Have both of them accompany your group.
>Send one of them to accompany Tac's group.
>Send both of them to accompany Tac's group.
>Set up your drones to stay outside and defend the perimeter.

Won't splitting the drones mean that Slash's attention will have to be split two ways as well? That could get hairy.
>>

>Send one of them to accompany Tac's group.

Is the energy reading high enough in scale that it'd mess with the electronics on the drone? Interference in the visual feed being my main concern here.
If so, I'm willing to switch with having both drones accompany Tac's group.
>>
>>40610256
The drones are automated.
>>
>>40610076
“Alright Tac, I'm gonna lend you one of my drones,” you say to him, tapping a few options on your smart-ring. “You should be able to control it now.”

“Good. Thanks, Gavin,” he says, looking at a screen on his gauntlet.

“The video will be fed back to our ship where Pete is. He'll keep us updated on what both of them see.”

“Sounds good,” Devon comments.

“Okay. Tac's group first, our group second,” Dani says, looking to the squad. Everyone nods their heads, and several of the Blackhawks shoulder their rifles, ready to enter the cave. She turns to you and your crew. “Follow closely behind, we're going in tight.”

“Oohooh.”

“Shut the fuck up, Josho.” Dani turns to you. “Who's taking point?”

>Ley'ra, she's got a reputation to uphold.
>Dani, she seems competent to lead.
>Devon, the guy's one stout motherfucker.
>Ivan, because he's one happy motherfucker.

>>
>>40610385
“Ley'ra will take point, she's good at it,” you say, looking over to Ley'ra. She gives you a smile and moves forward to the front of your group.

“The Cerberus girl, huh? This I gotta see,” Dani says, taking her place behind Ley'ra. You walk up and stand behind her, while Devon positions himself behind you.

“Beth, you're staying in the back,” you say, looking back at her.

“Okay,” she responds. You look to Ivan.

“Ivan, stick with her and keep her safe, yeah?”

“I will do that, comrade,” he responds.”

“Pete, how are you doing back there?” you ask through the comms.

“Hah, It's like I'm watching a movie,” he says. You hear the clink of a glass, presumably as he puts down a glass of water. “Better than watching a real movie.”

Dani laughs. “Get some popcorn while you're at it.”

“I wish, but we don't have any.”

“Geez, help yourself. We have nothing to eat at Hel other than popcorn.” You give Dani a pat on her shoulder to let her know you're ready to go. “Right. Everyone ready? Tac, lead the way.”

“Aye,” the man at the front responds. With his rifle raised, he walks around the corner, the line of people following closely behind. Before entering the cave, both Ley'ra and Dani pull down their goggles, presumably for night vision.

When you step into the cave proper, you're met with a surprisingly dark corridor. It doesn't take you long to get to the indicated fork, and you see Tac's group move down the right path. When Ley'ra gets up to the fork, she doesn't stop and turns left, Dani and the rest of you close behind. You can hear the footsteps of your squad behind you, and the sound subconsciously pushes you forward. Meanwhile, your drone hovers beside you fairly silently. You should thank Tera for giving you these.
>>
>>40610928
That's when you begin to hear a strange noise, something like a faint, howling wind. You think the rest of your squad senses it, but these caves seem... dead. Where are the dozens of bandits? You pass by what seems to be equipment and crates, so they're definitely in these caves somewhere. A part of you hopes that they're not all down one end of the cave, leaving only one of your groups to deal with three dozen bandits.

You can't quite make out what the noises are, only that they're some sort of high-pitched whooshing noises. The darkened cave doesn't do much to make it less spooky. Regardless, Ley'ra presses onward, stoic as ever in her new getup.

Down at the end of the hall seems to turn immediately into a right, and from there, you see blue light washing over the opposite walls, coming from the room within. The light against the wall looks like it's flickering... no, more like it's flowing. Not like from a dead lamp, but from the reflection of a body of water.

Ley'ra brings your group up to the entrance of the room, but stops at the wall beside it. She looks back to you with a little shrug.

What will you do?

You signal to your group to halt and bring up your smart-ring, tapping in a few orders for your drone to move forwards. With the drone pointed towards you, you make a few hand signals to hopefully tell Pete to tell you what he sees.

“You want me to kill the bong, what?” he says through the comms before letting out a few snickers. “Sorry. I getcha, I'll tell you what I see.”

Rolling your eyes, you nod your head and order the drone to go in. Slowly, the drone floats away from you and moves to the front of the group before peering into the room. You order it to go in... but it just freezes.

“Okay... there's bright blue light everywhere--wha...” Pete drifts off. After a pause, you hear him lean forwards on his chair. “...I... don't know what I'm seeing,” he says. “A man...? Shite, is the drone broke? My feed is fizzing out... gods, are you guys okay?”

At his words, the drone falls to the floor.

You signal to your squad that you're going to peak around yourself, but you first take out your last flash-bang from your bandolier.

Ley'ra and Dani give you a knowing nod and let you to the front. After pressing yourself against the wall, you take a moment to steel yourself. With your rifle in your right hand supported by the sash around your back, you hold the grenade in your left and you pull the pin.

You toss the grenade into the room and back up a bit, closing your eyes. A bright flash and a loud bang rings out, and you immediately pull yourself around the corner.

However, you freeze, and Ley'ra bumps into you from behind.

“Ah, how can you blind that w͞h̨ich does not need to see? Young being... the fire is̛ bright. Resplendent.”

The voice pierces through your hearing. It sounds like the voice of a hundred different people at once, and it doesn't sound like it's coming from in front of you. Or any direction. It's as if it's speaking to you directly... no, it's... thoughts. You're frozen in place, and but you don't find fear... rather, you feel serene. At peace. Your companions have stopped behind you, and you think they're in as much of a state of strangeness as you, but you can't pay them any mind.

What you thought was a man turns around to look straight you, and through his... flesh... you can see eternity. Only, he doesn't have flesh. It looks like a man made of light.

“But ço͠r͝r̵upting. An illusion. And you, Gavin, will play a part in its quell.”
