Make a campaign where the animal spirits and other mythical creatures have overtaken the government and enslaved humans. It is up to the players to either overthrow or infiltrate the system.

Oh wait, that's way too similar to Gintama.

Anyway, here are some catfish overlords.
>>
I remember there was a collection of short stories about a wandering samurai and a merchant who get into magical bullshit adventures.

In the one story I read, the dudes stay at an inn and they notice the waitress has six fingers. They wake up the next morning and realize that everything's changed, the inn is dilapidated, it has new owners, and the six fingered waitress is now an old crone. The inn owners tell them that they've been transported into the future, and that in order to go back they need lots of gold to buy reagents for a time travelling spell. The merchant, of course, would still have a pile of gold sitting in the bank. The samurai calls bullshit, rolls a 20 on investigation, and figures out it's just a big scam. It turns out the six fingered waitress just had a grandmother with the same congenital defect, and the inn keepers were using them to fleece hapless travelers.

I wish I could remember the name of the book, it's probably got some excellent material for this exact kind of thing.

If I were to do mythic Japan I would probably base it on the Heian period, before the feudal system that gave rise to the samurai class was firmly established (well I guess technically its origins were in the later Heian, but whatever, the lines are a little blurry).

There would be a big divide between civilization and wilderness; the wilderness is just downright fucking scary, evil wizards and demons and monsters run rampant; very "Points of Light"ish in a sense.

Would draw largely from the Onmyouji manga and from the Nihon Ryoiki; supernatural horror, rather than high adventure.

That's one aspect that's easy to forget about civilization in antiquity. Most people were unlikely to go more than a few miles from where they were born. As far as they were concerned, ogres were a very real danger if you were to leave your town and strike off the roads.

To us the world seems quite small, but back then leaving your stomping grounds was a huge and dangerous deal. In all actuality, bandits, murderers, and highwaymen really did roam the wilderness and wandering around unguarded really was quite stupid.

If you want inspiration, the Nihon Ryoiki (Miraculous Stories from the Japanese Buddhist Tradition, any good college library should have a copy) is a great start. It's a collection of supernatural Buddhist folk tales that are primarily moral lessons for common folk, and although they are fictional tales, they very often can paint amazing little portraits of everyday life during the time. They are usually very short tales and so make good adventure seeds to expand upon.

The anime series "Requiem from the Darkness" is great too, it's about a traveling writer trying to collect stories, and each episode is a self-contained story based on a traditional Japanese ghost tale, but with the twist that it's never actually a ghost that's responsible for what's going on, the ghost stories are just a psychological reflex to explain the horrible actions of normal people. So it's kind of like Scooby Doo in that sense. Even if you don't like anime that much, I should point out that it's based on a book by a very famous Japanese horror writer, Natsuhiko Kyogoku, who also happens to be one of Japan's best contemporary folklorists (in my opinion). It does a really good job of exploring the psychological origins of ghost stories and supernatural beliefs in general.

Izumi Kyoka's "The Holy Man of Mt. Koya" is another great inspiration, it's about a monk relaying the tale of his harrowing, surreal, and horrifying travels through the wilderness. It's another really good example of the psychological "fear of the unknown" and how all of these supernatural stories came to be in a world where people really don't know everything that's "out there" away from their immediate surroundings. In most of Japanese myth, "the mountains" are practically synonymous with evil magic, for example.

Sure, in a sense they are just stories that justify status quo and restricting the mobility of peasants, but it ports over to an explorable fantasy setting so easily.

Ok I have seen the OP and most people on this thread have the same vision of the game.

You are traveling investigators that incounters supernatural.

So the best way to do it is having a normal Japan.
Normal folks know that supenatural creatures exist but they know nothing about them.

Like World of Darkness.

Since the main scope fo the game is investigation the "monster manual" must be secret for the players (ala Paranoia)

I immagine PC are investigators called by a village with a probelm. The problem may be caused by:
>humans being assholes and pretending spirits are at work
>Some small youkai infestation. Uninteligent creatures tha tmust be destroye dor taken away.
>Youkai that do harm. PCs can either talk with them (if sentient) or kill them, or banish them, or seal them.
>Kami, Gods of the place are at work. You attack it it kilsl you. You need to convince him or the village to change. Crazy solutions like "Burning th ewhol forest" will destroy a kami, but that is a crazy solution.

THis way PCs never know what is behind the probelm and that going full murderhobo with no prep time gets the party killed.

I would suggest that each PC at cahr gen can chose a little spiritual companion.
some are passive boosts, some bring luck, some like the two tailed cat can be used to weak necromancy.

Also I immagine talking can get you a lto. You can convince a Kami to be friends with you and take over the country with his help.

P.S. are you writing a setting, making a game, or just enjoying a thought experiment.

What are those dogs depicted on it?
do You have more?

I would say leave samurai but exclude ninjas.
You can have feudal Japan with no ninja, but with non samurai it would not be Japan.

So for classes I immagine:
Samurai/warrior (very high melee skills)
Entertainer (High social skills)
Monks (BUddist/shintoist subcalsses) have little powers about identifying spritis (No roll spell that reveals all supernatural in 1 km radius) But have strong powers on sealing or banishing stuff.

We ned some mechanics that favors sealing/banishing over outright killing stuff. SInce in most stories stuff is sealed.

Also how do we explain that since his awesome powers are in Japan the current rulers aren't using them?

If you're going to be historically accurate, there wasn't really a caste system by the time of the Heian period; the strict enforcement of the ritsuryo system had pretty much devolved by then, and in some sense its abandonment (along with many other things borrowed from China) lines up pretty much with the beginning of the Heian era.

There were three general social classes; serfs, freemen, and nobility. Probably anything besides being a serf would be fine for a game; most freemen were farmers but they could hold almost any occupation, artisans, bureaucrats, soldiers (the soldiers that served provincial lords who would eventually become the samurai came from this class originally, as well).

If you want to play heavy political intrigue, then having characters come from one of the major ruling clans is the quickest way. Aristocratic life didn't have to be especially rigid or full of obligations; the cultural advancements that the Heian era is known for came from them dicking around, but they could just have easily have gone on little adventures or ghostbusting or whatever. The Buddhist temples too were gaining a large amount of political power at the time and often pressed against the ruling aristocracy, so monks can easily find themselves involved as well.
>>
>>40598520
I was just looking for a sweet spot. Dirt farmers aren't going to be called to court and the inner ranks of the imperial house don't even go outside. Monks and minor nobles are the ones with mobility and the social standing to go anywhere. Merchants too.

I'm not beholden to historical accuracy, but I do believe there are some places a character should never see inside unless they have already done something extremely exceptional. It also keeps characters that don't fit with the game out to some degree.
>>

>are you writing a setting, making a game, or just enjoying a thought experiment.

Yakuza, guards, levy infantry, demon hunters, Chinese monks. Samurai is a very specific class and title that didn't exist as we know it until very late. Hell you can just be a swordsman. If you go heian, Japanese swords didn't really exist and were still very Chinese in design.

A traveling monk would probably be the perfect figure to be travelling around japan, since they frequently did so historically, were ussually more literate than the general populous, would have reason to know about the supernatural and would be in possition to talk to people in different social classes.
Other possible classes:
Traveling performer
Hunter
A magistrate who has left their home region persuing a criminal
A homeless bum (preferably alchoholic)
A thief

I want a mythic Japan setting set in the Meiji era. Trade with the steampunk Westerners has started to increase the tech level, but hostile oukai activity has increased as well because of the foreign presence. Samurai are only allowed to keep their weapons if they join the anti-youkai force, which also consists of monks and onmyouji. Guns are ineffective against youkai. The magic system would be the Chinese five elements because of the various cycles. I want to work that in.
>>

I forgot the specifics but there was this beautiful quote about the funeral of Emperor Meiji and how ahead of his carriage were modern businessmen, soldiers and officers in cars, but behind him were people such as sumos, geishas, samurai, and shinto/buddhist monks behind on horses.

FAR more than the just emperor had died. It was the end of an era.

...feels like the ending of LOTR at the grey havens when the magic and wonder of Middle Earth was gone forever.

I always imagined the Youkai boarding trains and vanishing once old japan was gone

While not particularly HISTORIC, i'd probably mash a bunch of foundational japanese history together so you have the great clans beginning to form but large parts of the archipelago are still tribal settlements, parts of the country are beginning to emulate chinese culture but parts are presinicized, maybe even live some of the pre-yayoi huntergatherers around.

Basically a mashup of the Kofun and Yayoi periods.

Shady merchant is scared of ninja attack, hires you to protect him.
At the same time the city is host to a farmer's market, trade caravan, local festival, and a three-day public noh play, replete with black-garbed stagehands who occasionally have to run errends through town without changing out of the uniform.
So they need to defend this guy and his shop while the town is crawling with unnoticeable dirt farmers carrying gardening tools, out-of-towners who stick out like sore thumbs and carry oddly shaped packages, and guys wearing the stereotypical ninja suit weaving through crowds trying to get their errends done as quickly as possible, all of which are prime ninja disguises.
And no ninjas actually show up.

Turns out it's not ancient Japan; it's a future where the Japanese miracle went off the charts. Corporations set up a fake mythic land to act out their fantasies. The NPCs are all wage slaves, players are interns trying to impress their superiors, and monsters are people who didn't pay their debts. It's Japanese Jurassic Park with swords and stabbing.

>In Japanese folklore, Gashadokuro, (がしゃどくろ) literally "starving skeleton" (also known as Odokuro), are giant skeletons that are fifteen times taller than an average person. If a Gashadokuro sees a human, it will grab them and attempt to bite its head off with its giant teeth to drink the spray of blood. Gashadokuro are created from gathering bones from people who have died of starvation. The only way a Gashadokuro can be detected before it appears is by hearing a ringing in one's ears. They are said to possess the powers of invisibility and indestructibility; though Shinto charms are said to ward them off.

>People who are being targeted by this mammoth- sized skeleton hear extremely loud bells ringing throughout their ears. Gashadokuro targets people when they are alone. It roams about after midnight.

Hey /tg/, what time is it?

1. Ninjas and yamabushi, obviously
2. Shinto shrines and lots of lesser gods
3. Samurai and, consequently, ronins

6. Lots of ninjo on the GM's part and giri on the players' part

Just use their literal translation, or some close approximation. A lot of them are euphemisms or wordplay, which obscures the actual creatures abilities.
>>
>>40615992
A secluded sorcerer/necromancer shunned from the local village for practicing black magics, constructs wandering bodies to search and bring back food for him to live off.

Turns out skeleingtons end up eating everything they find, and the local dickass spirits think it a swell idea to give birth to super mega bone 2000 from the resulting town starvation deaths.

Does your super nippon team;
- Investigate and slay/collaborate with the sorcerer to deal with the spookies
- Heroically defeat the threat head on
- Rally the townsfolk to battle
- Sleuth their way around some kind of supernatural force

(That thing is turbo disturbing, who the fuck would think of such a thing)

Just come up with a short and very literal description in plain language, and then pretty it up bit by bit until you're satisfied.

For example, let's use this guy: >>40615992. The literal translation of "starving skeleton" is a good place to start. "Skeleton" doesn't have isn't quite ludicrously poetic enough, and doesn't imply its enormous size. So we could swap that out for, say, "tower". And if we want to go full Exalted, we can change the adjective descriptor, "starving," into the verb descriptor, "that hungers."

So from Starving Skeleton, we get The Tower That Hungers.
