Last Time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: You resolved a conflict that would have likely lead to an all-out war with the human tribes through diplomacy. Their leader promised to bring your offer of peace to his elders, and some of their warriors agreed to join the budding human village near your borders. Back in the village, you finally chose to lend your assistance and the assistance of your undead to the building efforts. You further reconnected with Bathory and learned of Lathrien and Melandie's relationship. Inspired by the construction in the village, you decided to upgrade your ruin into something more appropriate for your station. But first, you needed stone, and that meant going to trade with the dwarves. On your way to the mountain you intercepted some drow refugees and learned that the dwarves have uncovered an ancient artifact of their own- a runecraft forge. Trade seemed to go well with the dwarven elder, until a younger dwarf, apparently trading with the other human tribes attacked you and the elder, along with his well-armed allies.

The Cast:
Vlad Tepish: You, a necromancer, who after being exiled from his tribe, found an ancient ruin. Armed with ancient knowledge and magic you are on a quest for immortality (among other things)
Bathory: Your lover. Trying to bring her back to life was what lead to your exile in the first place. The process of preserving her spirit was, unbeknownst to you, excruciating, and she hated you for a long time. Now in a new and improved alchemical body, she is warming up to you.

Lathrien: Your erstwhile hostage, now a friend and an apprentice, Lathrien is an elf and becoming quite a capable Necromancer and Shaman.

Melandie: Elven huntress and berserker. She joined up with your party on her own volition. She recently was left in charge of your ruin and ended up slaughtering a number of drow. She is uncertain as to how she feels about this.

A dozen dwarves, fully armed and filthy are charging at you full speed. It would be laughable, if not for their superior weapons, howling rage and conviction of their right to do so. The elder looks at you once and enters a defensive stance alongside you. You have stopped a charging army mid-step once before through your words. It would be even harder against these dozen dwarves clad in full armour, as they are refusing to stop shouting their battlecry.

>Try anyways. You will bring diplomatic union to this region even if you have to take an axe or two to the face.

Nat 20/1! Critical Convergence! Unlikely and Weird Shit Happens! (Precedent in Melandie's PoV thread)

The dwarven charge does not seem to stop. You raise your hands in the air and shout in your best baritone:

'Dwarves! Friends! Allies! We have no need to fight...'
'Khar Kharaam Duun!'

Shit. You brace for the charge. The elder looks around.

'Oh fuck it, I've been tryin' to figure out what this lever does ever since I first saw it.'

He pulls an ornate gold-and-bronze lever. In an ancient dwarven hold. You hold your cool, though you believe the correct reaction would be to scream and run away, hoping it is nothing TOO liquid that the dwarven elder has released. You might outrun magma.

Luckily, you do not have to find out.

'MURDER PROTOCOLS INITIALIZED'

You look around, searching for the source of the sound. Then, one of the massive metal statues has come to life. Then, with a movement much swifter than anything of such weight should have they countercharge the oncoming dwarves. The battle is bloody and terribly one-sided. The golems, or whatever these are, have already killed three of the dwarves by the time you have time to react.

>Join in on the side of the metal men. They are fighting your enemies, and your ally first released them. Perhaps he can control them.
>Join in on the side of the dwarves. Defeating these metal men might bring them on your side.

Diplomacy 4 [2/5]. I am starting to think the dice do not hate Vlad TRYING diplomacy, no, indeed, the dice want Vlad to have more Diplomacy skill than I had ever intended to be possible.

'Elder, can you control them?'
'I dinnae know. I'll try pulling some levers, you just do whatever ye want.'

The battle moves towards you, as the charging dwarves stop and form a defensive square of metal ax and spear. The pace of the battle slows down. The dwarves are still doing very little damage to the golems, but the elder has enough to pull another lever.

'INCOMPATIBLE ORDERS, ENGAGING REASONING INTERFACE'

They stand down. The golems do not seem to be willing to attack anymore, but neither do they allow the dwarves to advance.

'MAINTAIN ORDER! WAIT FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS! LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS!'

'Now will you listen to me?' you say.
'WE ARE WATCHING CLOSELY. DO NOT PROCEED WITH VIOLENCE UNDER THREAT OF VIOLENCE.' The golem hive-voice says.
'Ain't look like we got much choice, Warlock.' The young dwarf leading the twelve says.

'First of all. The humans attacked me with no provocation. They've stolen knowledge of ancestors with no leave. I have wanted nothing but trade and a good damned working relationship with the other tribes in the region. So why the fuck won't anyone listen to me?'
'Yer a fucken' dead-raiser,' he spits, 'Fuckin' with the order 'o things, like them fuckin' drow.'
'Yes, I cannot fault that. So can we talk fucking trade now?'
'Nay, sonny. The youngster challenged my leadership. One way to deal with this. We fight to the death.' the elder says.
'COMBAT WILL BE PUNISHED'
'Oh shut up ye great block of slag, 's a proper duel, right and honorable.'
'THAT... IS ACCEPTABLE'

>Let them fight, try to deal with any survivors.

'Grimbeard of the Blackstone Clan' he says
'Grimbeard of the Blackstone Clan, for insults towards me, my allies and your elder, I challenge you to a duel of honour to the death.'
'I... No magic!'
'The terms we can go over. One thing first. Unlike the fucking drow I'm not a fucking asshole.' You throw a bundle of drow heads at Grimbeard's feet.
'Oi, you don't do that in my stead, Vlad!' the elder says.
'I've made the challenge. I will not go back on it. What are the rules?'
'Well, first, there's one thing each of ye can ban. So if he says no magic, there's no magic. Second, the place of combat is the same as the place of challenge, within an hour. You'll be asked if ye want to do it again, and there won't be no dishonour in refusing. Third, yer expected to fight honourable, but there ain't no proper rules of what honourable actually means.'

>What do you ban, if anything. A ridiculous ban (for example, divine intervention) might show your confidence, but a more reasonable ban (no runecraft) might improve your chances of winning.
>Do you mess with the dwarf before the duel? There are technically no rules against cursing him now, or turning into a bear before the duel, but it would certainly be uncouth.

'Aye, a clever choice.'
'Elder, might I speak with you in private?'
'Sure thing,' the elder walks a bit away from the crowd, though he does not go so far that curious ears could not hear, 'What is it, Vlad?'
'What does the boy fight like?'
'He's damn good. Either way this fight goes it ain't going to be good for us, but I reckon I lost Grimbeard already. Reckon I shall be rooting for you.'
'Good in what way?'
'Well, he's young, fit, fast for a dwarf, and tough as any of us. Outlasting him won't work, no offence.'
'None taken. I will need every advantage without my magic.'
'He's fairly unexperienced. Outhink him if ye can. Strike hard and fast when there's an opening. Be sure it's damn hard. You might have to go on the defensive, but don't stay there, he'll outlast ya, as I said.'
'I was kind of hoping he was a windbag.'
'Tough shit.'

The room is cleared and a circle of dwarves is made. The golems join in, claiming that CIRCLE IS UNDERSIZED COMPARED TO REGULATION SIZE. This is about the closest to a fair fight you've been in.

Grimbeard spits on the ground.

'Either of ye, want to withdraw?' the elder says
'Nay.' Grimbeard says.
'I do not.' You say.

Grimbeard squints at you. He's chosen an old, unimpressive but deadly axe, solid iron haft and head. He beats it at his chest and screams.

He charges you, and the momentum Grimbeard has built is terrifying. If you actually took his axe you would get seriously wounded, but even not moving out of the way of the armoured ball of metal, hair and fat was never going to be pretty.

You duck low on his high slash. A split second later you are impacted by a high velocity ball of iron and dwarf. Even as he shouts out in triumph, you stab your longsword straight through his chest.

Before you can finish it, Grimbeard jumps back. He still has a terrible, probably deadly wound. But he has not stopped.

You have taken one wound. You are bruised and bashed about. It is a little harder to concentrate.

Grimbeard has taken three wounds. An average man would be dead.

He does not press it again. He drops in a more defensive position.

Fuck! Fuck fuck fuck!
This is what Melandie must feel all the time.

You slash at his hands, trying to stop him from choking you. Once he lets go for a bit you just stab him with the sharp end a lot until he stops doing anything. Your foe falls dead in front of you. You breathe in deeply. You manage to get back on your feet.

'FUCKING 'A, Vlad!' you hear Melandie's voice. It is followed by a silence, first awkward then mournful.

The elder walks up to you in a little while.

'Vlad Tepish is the winner!'

He shakes your hand and leans in a bit:

'I thought you was done fer' Good on ya, sonny.'
'That was some fight. Shame he could not be reasoned with.'
'Aye. No business today. Sleep it off, we can talk more tomorrow.'

You limp off. The dwarven beds make no fucking sense. If you're just going to make them out of stone, why bother.

You sleep well and wake up in pain.

'Vlad, I would say that was the most idiotic thing that you had ever done, if I'd not see you trying to talk to them as they were charging,' Bathory says.
'Love, how is everyone?'

No, humans are far less stubborn than dwarves, and a lot of the humans we faced were only doing as ordered, most could be convinced to go home and not fight.

Dwarves are -not- like humans in that regard, they are stubborn beyond belief.

Bring them back WITHOUT enhanced bodies, they are a threat, and one that will not forget that we got them killed, and killed their impromptu leader.

The ground rumbles a little. It is not a movement, but a sound. Huh. You thought he was far below such control. Good for him. You leave him to meditate on the spirit for a while longer and approach Melandie.

'You look like you could use the company,'
'Oh being within the sight of my beloved is all the blah blah blah fuckity blah.'
'What has happened since I have been out?'
'Shit, Vlad, I was just about to jump into that circle and fuck you honour.'
'They probably would have attacked you.'
'Yeah well it damn well looked like he was going to fucking kill you, didn't it?'
'I had it under control.'
'Fuck off you did. And you've been 'training' Bathory? I really hope that was an euphemism. I've no idea how you won, your swordsmanship could use so much fucking work.'
'Always happy for constructive criticism.'
'Sorry, Vlad Tepish. I know I've been a bit on edge lately, but fuck if you can say you didn't put me there.'
'You did well.'
'I did fuck all.'
'Sometimes that is the right thing to do. What did you mean about my swordsmanship?'
'I mean hell, it's... Well fuck I guess it's easier if I show you,'

No, these Dwarfs hate Dark Elves, and because they use Necromancy, they hate that by extension.

We're here to change that, and to show them the benefits of being allied with a necromancer.

If we don't work to change peoples minds we'll always land into this situation.

Let's just say that casting rituals as evocations is coming.

You walk off. You know for a fact that you are an exceptional diplomat. You should really be almost as good as Bathory. But when she speaks, all listen and agree. When you speak, you seem to engender a mindless rage to all who listen. Perhaps you should harness that power.

You know exactly who should be the ones to transport the goods. You walk to where the golems are standing. You would almost think they have gone back to hibernation, if not for an occasional patrol around the room by one of them.

'I am Vlad Tepish, and I am trying to bring this region together in peace and order.'
'ORDER IS GOOD'
'It might not work out so well, but it is what I am attempting.'
'INITIATING ACTION IS REQUIRED FOR AGREEABLE OUTCOME'
'I need supplies, however. I have arranged trade with the dwarves, but I need someone to transport it.'
'PAYMENT IS REQUIRED FOR SERVICES'
'What would you like to be paid in'
'WE DESIRE NOTHING'

>Offer some nominal and symbolic fee. This seems to be one of those 'protocol' things
>Offer a substantial amount of gold. Once they become a part of society the golems might need it to exchange for other goods
>Other payment

You have gained a Bloodthirst runeblade. Your weapon is still much better than any runeblade, but it would be an upgrade to any of your allies

>Give it to Bathory
>Give it to Lathrien
>Give it to Melandie

lets do a bit of both, they get to help create order for the three races and receive honor and material wealth
>>
'I will offer you payment in copper, in weight of one third of the gold given to the dwarves'
'THIS IS ACCEPTABLE. TWO GOLEMS WILL BE TRANSPORTING THE STONE TO YOUR LAIR STARTING NOW, NECROMANCER'
'I do not have a lair.'
'NECROMANCERS HAVE LAIRS'
You feel it might be futile to argue here.

Melandie seems to materialize as if from nowhere.

'So I guess that big fuck-off scary looking sword is for me? Oh thank you Vlad Tepish, you are the best evil overlord ever!'
'I am NOT evil, and I am NOT lording over anyone.'
'Wait, so I can keep it?'
'Yes, I suppose you could put it to best use out of us.'

You get ready to depart. You do not take too long. The dwarves have gotten a lot harder to talk to now that they have power. Once others start trading with them, they will surely have wealth too. You do not even want to imagine what THAT is going to be like. At least there isn't that many of them.

You leave. It is cold outside. But then, there is also good air there. You see the two golems, carrying almost comically large stacks of stone disappearing into the treeline.

The journey back is uneventful. The basic structures of the village are finished, and your undead are now working on the walls. You go back home.

>Inspiration has struck you. You should go to the ruin that Karrim's spirit told you about. You believe that the secret for immortality is there and that you should take it.

You both know what she said. You see a flicker in her eyes, she considers laughing it off. But that would be nonsense. That would be madness. You walk around the table to meet each other. There are no words that could possibly be said at this moment. Through some indescribable, unknowable assortment of movements you are in each others hands.

You kiss her and the world disappears. This is not the first time, but it is. Your hands move over her body, treacherous thoughts of a slab in a lab flickering in your mind. She kisses you more strongly and you forget everything. You easily slide her clothes off, revealing----

It is some time later, and it is impossible to know how long. Regional politics, diplomatic relations, magical knowledge, immortality, well, they seem somewhat less important.

Basically, Draconic Magic is low power early on (up to ~lvl 5), but then it sort of outpaces most other schools. Since this is Feral NECROMANCER quest Necromancy gets the most fun stuff, but can't beat dragons for high power.

You have learned Draconic Magic III.

By the simple act of looking someone in the eye and channeling some magic you can make them stand perfectly still for as long as you keep eye contact. You are still free to act as usual, but they have a chance to escape if you directly attack them.

Also would we be able to study the vampire sword? Get a feel for the magic that powers it then be able to make it a school to level or have it as supplemental?

Just spent the last 9 hours reading through the archive after I noticed this quest in the catalog once again. Very glad I did. You really run an excellent quest Dead. Thanks for all your hard work and I eagerly look forward to future threads.

Also, pic related was my face throughout the entire read through.
