Stage 81:

Escaping to the beach wasn't necessarily a matter of choice.

Part of it was hiding in a crowd, yes. Making it difficult for your enemy to take any of you out by sheer numbers. But more importantly you needed to heal after some treachery landed you inside the Landlord's realm of bizarre chaos, where you were stuck for two hundred years and some change. The flashbacks were intensifying quite a bit, and some one is trying to use magic to influence you a little, so swimming with Kiki-hime wasn't just a promise being kept, it was also breaking away from the threats and issues that were starting to crop up.

In a word, healing.

However, it seems you attracted the attention of an honest to kami mermaid, a ningyo, who was fascinated by your left hand and arm, and then became incredibly excited – in a perfectly normal way! – about something when she listened to your Pearl. Sure, she could have been listening to your heart, but you don't think so. After she swam off you and Kiki-hime surfaced, and naturally the first words out of her mouth were asking what that was all about.

The truth is you have no idea. You have some suspicions, certainly, and given the relationship between storms, wars, calamities, and ningyo, they might even be correct. But it's a moot point, as she's fast enough in the water to be halfway to Hawaii by now.

“I wish I knew. I don't know anything about mermaids, Hime-chan.” You are still holding her hand, though at the surface it isn't necessary. “She was old, though, really old. Probably thousands of years old. Golden scales, and she was huge....I can't imagine that being typical of them. You'd need a whaling boat to even try and catch her.” You swim a little closer to her and she takes your other hand so she can face you. “Pretty though!”

Kiki-hime grins. “Was she soft, too?”

At one point the mermaid had pressed rather close to you to see if you had gills. “Not really. Solid muscle, not like Kiki-hime's booms at all.”

Kiki-hime laughs and pulls you close for a soft, slow kiss. Sakura sweetness and salt, surprisingly pleasant. “Come on, I want to see a lionfish!” She pulls you towards the side of the bay opposite that which the beach house sits upon.

“You're more likely to see stonefish, this time of year, you know,” you comment mildly as she drags you along.

That prompts a giggle. “So? They're ugly enough to be cute!” You grin and slide under the water, taking her with you as you head towards the seaweed bed.

[] You can locate one pretty quickly....

Anon, aside from the mermaids, who are certainly up to something, we have perhaps our biggest challenge yet to face, this thread.

We have to tell Shoko that the reincarnation of Horobi could have been lost, forever outside her reach when she just had found it.

We have to tell Yuuhi and Inau that their missions could have been complete failures, without anything they could do to correct it.

We have to say to our sister that yes, there was a way to avoid her vision to come true, as she so often prayed and hoped for it to happen.

We have to say to Yui she could have lost her karmic master, leaving her with no place in the cosmic order.

We have to say to Akari a breach in security, that she is dedicated to maintain, could have been the end of us

And we have to tell Kiki that she could have had to grow old without us, our daugther never knowing us. We have to tell us we would have failed to protect everyone, if not for luck. And we have to tell her we have been far from our family longer than most beings live .

Er Yin and Kiku already know how long, but imagine how they'll react once they'll learn what kind of horror we lived
>>
[X] Half the fun is the searching!
[X] You can find something just as interesting somewhere down here, sure
[+]. There are more wonders to see down here than most people will ever know about....

You swim quickly to the kelp beds, but once you actually reach them you slow down, the exhilarating rush of water past you both leaving Kiki-hime 'breathless' and wide-eyed. She starts parting the long strands carefully, though you note she doesn't actually touch them when she does so, instead motioning them out of her way. They seem to oblige quite readily; apparently her ability isn't hampered by water in the slightest, which isn't rally a surprise.

You do find something on a number of the fronds of thick greenery, and you motion her close. Curious she obediently moves close and you hold up the strange amber growth to the light streaming form the surface. It's a vaguely pillow shaped object, with strange twisted and elongated corners that are tightly wound about the fronds. Her eyes go wide and she places her hand over her mouth as she sees the tiny shark inside, the yolk that has been sustaining it almost entirely gone.

She blushes, placing a hand over her belly; you smile at her and let the frond drift back, hiding the precious thing among the other stalks and fronds.

More coral abounds along the bottom of the sea over here, but it is growing off of the stone and rock formations. Algae, seaweed. and coral alike provide glittering, shifting homes for the colorful fish and sea urchins. Kiki-hime finds a colorful and strange nudibranch swimming through the ocean, drifting along peacefully. She also finds a strange lump that seems alive, crawling along the floor. You touch it, and it spits a multitude of strange stuff as it turns itself partly inside out and she makes a disgusted expression....but true to her previous claim, there is a weird fascination with the horrible sea cucumber as well.

The near glowing fronds of sea anemones and the brilliantly colored clown-fish settles her stomach some, and it is here you find something worthy of a gift. Dead coral looks and feels to you much different than live coral, and the nearly ebony branches of it fall to thick pieces under a quick and carefully hidden swipe of your talons. Rather than pick up the pieces, you let them tumble into ~Nowhere~, planning on making a gift for your wife of them. To your surprise she does actually find a stonefish, and manages to catch it easily. It's powerful venom is harmless to her of course, and she presents it to you. You make a face at it and she laughs silently when it struggles to escape; she lets the ugly monstrosity go, and it drifts to the sea bottom, blending in with it's environs immediately.

She also manages to find a cowrie, a huge sea snail slowly hunting for prey. You take her hand away as she reaches to pick it up. You're not worried about the poisonous spine harming her, as much as you are about it hurting her. You point out your stab wounds, and then point at the creature, and make a quick jabbing motion with one talon. She smiles indulgently at you, and leads you off towards the nearby beach.

Yeah, she regenerates, and poison won't hurt her, but you're pretty sure the blood would interest the shark nearby, even though they don't like ~you~. Besides, little stab wounds always hurt, even Wood oni-children can't stand them.
>>
>>40576684
It's not too difficult to walk free of the ocean, and she laughs giddily, tugging you up the beach until she can sit down some distance from the waves, the white sand sticking to her feet and swimsuit. Settling down next to her, you glance across the bay to the party on the other side, where things are getting quite rowdy. You can feel Er yin sleeping peacefully, the others all awake. Kiki-hime leans into you, snuggling close and you lean back, resting your head against hers as she rests hers against your shoulder.

“This was a wonderful idea, Ryu-chan. Thank you very much.” You shake your head slightly, but she continues. “I've been under guard before, many times....but I've never felt safe, or happy, until now.”

[XXX] your smile is all the reward I need

[+] One day we'll come back as a family....

You can't help but smile, and you reach up with your ruby taloned hand, and trace her lips carefully. “You deserve this. Happiness, and safety. But this....” You trace her lips, and she leans forward to kiss your 'fingertips'. “This is why I do everything. This is my reward, and it is the only one I want.”

She laughs softly, and turns to you, pressing up against you and threatening to push you over – if that were possible. “Oh really?” she asks playfully, but the deep blush and her pounding heart tell you your words meant much, much more to her than she dares show. “The ~only~ reward?” Your heart catches up with hers, and you can feel her pearl throbbing heavily in time to your heartbeats. Your own pearl is much to large to pulsate so, but you feel hers nonetheless.

You smile softly and lean back into her, your breasts pressed together, ruby fingers carefully sliding down to caress her soft belly. “That's not a reward, kasan....that's a treasure to be shared between us.”

Her blush reaches the tips of her ears and all the way to her cleavage, and her expression falters, not from shame or embarrassment, but from acceptance. “Yes. Yes it is,” she whispers softly before kissing you slowly and deeply. The kiss lasts too short a time, and almost forever.

When you both come back to the real world, breathing heavily, you gently rub the back of your crystalline fingers along her belly. Kiki-hime rests her forehead against yours, the foremost branches of her horns rubbing yours in a thrilling manner. “One day we'll come back, when things have settled, and show her what we have seen.” Kiki-hime smiles, and glances sideways, towards the opposite beach.

“We have an audience, Ryu-chan,” she murmurs, grinning despite her deep blush.

You glance to the side, expecting her to mean other swimmers or the crowd on the other side of the bay, but no, she's referring to a much closer audience. A trio of ningyo, about thirty feet away, their heads barely above water, are watching you and Kiki-hime. None of these are the one you saw earlier, and you can see their tails – much, much shorter, and sparkling blue, green, and red scales. Their dark hair is more wild, and they're wearing shells and pearls tied into the coils and strands.

One of them, the one with pale blue scales and nearly blue skin, lifts her fingers and gives you kind of a finger-wave. It's only when she repeats it you realize she's making a come-here gesture, not just waving at you. It's also extremely unnerving how they're almost entirely hidden from your senses.

Some of those stories are in fact tied to Ningyo, even if it's more about eating them than following them.

[X] Take Kiki-hime, and see what they want.
[X] Tell Kiki-hime what they want and ask what she'd like to do..
[+] Radio the troops, get some visuals, and keep your powder....wait, wasn't that an army movie?

You continue rubbing your wife's belly, less because you want to keep up some kind of pretense and more because you just like doing it. You're pretty sure the mermaids don't really care about that sort of thing, even in public; their minds just don't seem that complete. Or they're just so alien that you haven't any frame of reference to understand what your Water Eyes would ordinarily tell you.

“I think they want to talk to me, kasan,” you murmur as you nuzzle her gently, careful not to catch her horns against the notches in yours. Kiki makes an affirmative noise, though she's taking your other hand and kissing the back of your fingers softly. The other mermaids are also doing the same inaccurate come-hither gesture now, making them look like a set of drowning animatronic dolls from some Youtube video. “Apparently it's important to them.”

Kiki-hime looks up at you, amused. “Well, all right, but you're taking care of the aquarium,” she teases.

“....Kiki-hime, I am NOT taking a mermaid home with us,” you reply, though you can't help but smile as well. Helping her rise, you pause and look towards the other beach, reaching for Er Yin's sleeping mind. She wakes slowly, and you politely wait for her grogginess to pass. (Er Yin-sensei, I have a trio of ningyo here who want to talk to me. I saw a grandmother one earlier.) Water Eyes are telling you very little, other than they want you to come to them. It is almost like their minds are too simple for you to latch onto anything.

(I do not know that word, Ryukusa-sama.) It takes you a moment to frame the concepts in your mind, because apparently there isn't such a creature in Chinese mythology, or Ainu mythology. (I will speak to Kiku-san and Shoko-san.)

(I can hear you both,) communes Kiku-chan. Shoko doesn't seem to hear you though. (Aniki, be very careful; they are not like us, they're much more primal, much less tame than kami and youkai. They're closer to nature than even we are.)

(I kind of get the impression that they seem to know me, or knew the previous me. The grandmother mermaid was especially interested in my arm, and pressed her ear to my chest.) Kiki-hime and you are at the waters edge, and the mermaid are all watching her curiously, as she waves back. When she uses her tail to wave, the all duck their heads under water and you feel a bone jarring, high pitched vibration that shivers from your left arm all the way through your body to your horns. When they come back up, they're closer, and supporting themselves on their hands as they use their finned tails to wave to Kiki-hime, who laughs, delighted. (I'm definitely not sensing much in the way of hostility, but I'm not sensing much at all from them.)

Er Yin speaks in your mind. (Shoko-san says that the mermaids are related to Horobi's power directly, but not to Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado. The relationship is more that of tool and user.) She pauses and you wait patiently. (She says that Amako Zen-ue would sometimes send one to the shore to give the villages ample time to prepare when he was going to perform his duties.) That makes sense. Not allies, as much as tools. That....really doesn't make you feel comfortable.

(Aniki,) Kiku-chan speaks softly in your mind, privately, you sense. (Thank you for assisting my Master. And I think that the ningyo will not hurt you. We're not humans, so they don't fear us.)

You silently acknowledge her thanks, not denying her the appreciation though you would have done it anyways, and then speak to them both. (Thank you. This is prompted by the face that your wife is kneeling in the water and all three have cautiously come up to touch her outstretched hand lightly with their fingertips. [XX] Just watch for the moment.
[XX] Join her, she seems to have a rapport of sorts.
[XXX] Share what you've been told, and stand next to Kiki-hime rather than behind her.

You watch the trio of mermaids cautiously examining your wife's hand, their fingertips lacking nails, instead seeming to be just sharp points. Their scales, now that you are looking at some that aren't older than some of the nearby islands, cover their tails but also reach up to their lower backs. Despite all the depictions, they only have the shapes of buttocks – the scales along their back reach to about mid-spine. From the front they appear human down to where their crux would be, but the scales wrap from spine, down to hips, and then to that delta. They have navels, which isn't surprising, considering they are probably egg-layers. Probably more like sharks than not, given those teeth.

The air doesn't seem to bother them, their gills continuing to pulse slowly though their chests do not move. Their breasts look normal, but they're firm, and they have indented nipples which you doubt actually provide milk consider you've only seen bigger bosomed girls have those and these are all well under your size. Closer to Akari's, really. The ears are much smaller than the grandmother's were, but they are also wearing decorative things: misshapen pearls of varied colors (undoubtedly all natural), shells woven into their hair, and bracelets and bands of beaten gold. Definitely not Japanese – it looks more like Spanish or Greek styling to you, but you're not much of a historian.

You cautiously move to kneel next to your wife, and immediately the trio turns their attention to you, making that somewhat childish version of 'come here' to you. One does pause and drop prone, looking at your sapphire talons. Slowly extending your hand, you aren't surprised when all three immediately move closer, staring with wide, curious eyes.

“I spoke with Kiku-chan and Er Yin-sensei. They said that the ningyo are related to the power of my mikoto, and that they're probably fairly harmless, if a little strange” Kiku-chan closes her Wood Eyes and smiles up at you. “Apparently my predecessor used them to warn the coastal villages that he was going to cause storms or tsunamis or such.” You can't help but wonder if they had to die as part of that warning or not. You really need to look up the legends more carefully.

“Well, these ones were here to see if you would make a choice, but I think I made them understand what kind of person you are.” Smiling, Kiki-hime rests her hands on your right hand and leans into you just a little. “They're....sort of simple. Childlike, but they're not stupid or anything. They just....have a weird idea of what is good and bad.”

“How weird?” you ask curiously, watching as the trio look at one another, then two back away, while the green one moves closer....and then sticks her tongue out and touches it to your sapphire finger. She withdraws, her expression a sort of bemused wonder, while Water Eyes tells you she's merely surprised. Kiki-hime giggles as the trio back away into the surf and start beckoning you once more.
>>
>>40579074
“Well....it's sort of....” she hesitates, thinking on it. “They're like Yui-chan was. So caught up in what they were that they've forgotten they could be more.” That doesn't really answer your question, but you suspect that she probably couldn't be more clear if she tried. “Not bad as in evil, though you might see it that way, at first, but bad as in, doing things a way that doesn't have to work anymore.”

Water Eyes works fine on her, of course; her explanation is based on her minimal experience with samurai and oni. She's tried to make them see that the old ways aren't necessarily the best ways, and she's confident she's made a difference.

[X] Thank you, kasan, for doing that.
[X] Intent matters in these sorts of things, so it will be fine, Kiki-hime.
[X] So far, you've never steered anyone wrong, Kiki-hime.

You smile and lean over, kissing the corner of your wifes mouth, and she beams at you. It's uncomfortably like looking into the face of the sun.

Literally. She reminds you of Amaterasu-Omikami for just a few seconds.

“So far, you've never steered anyone wrong with your talents, kasan, and I don't think you'll start now.” The trio of mermaids are looking at each other, your kiss seeming to confuse them a great deal. “Your intents are always pure, and while there may not be good or evil, you've never done any harm with your gift. Everything will work out just as you say, Kiki-hime.” It's not just lip service or reassurance. It's your earnest belief that she's done something to help you, even if she doesn't understand precisely what that is. “Domo arigatou gozimasu, kasan,” you murmur, before kissing her quite firmly.

She returns the kiss, and that seems to have caused all sorts of consternation with your audience. When you break the kiss, they all quickly crowd up to Kiki-hime – but not threatening or endangering her. Quite the opposite, there is nothing but concern for her well being there, an careful touches to her mouth and silent glances between themselves.

Oh. They thought you bit her.

You offer her your hand and help her up, and the mermaids immediately slither around and slide into the deeper waters. They don't flop or have any trouble moving on land – their bodies, for as heavy as they seem, are pretty boneless. You suspect they're more like sharks than fish, and probably have cartilaginous skeletons. It would make them incredibly flexible and fast, as well as leaving no evidence except their teeth when they die.

“Kiki-hime, don't let go of my wrist for anything. I trust them, but you can never be certain of anything in our world. And I promise....I won't let them be used by anyone, for anything. I'm not the same as the last one.” She nods firmly, trusting in you utterly. You steal one last kiss – which causes several tail-slaps and shocked looks – and then lead her into the water.

The trio dart away from you, but you take both of Kiki-hime's wrists in your and slide through the water at full speed, easily catching up to these three. You could undoubtedly outrace them; their grandmother was a special case, which makes you feel much better. The trio lead you to the entrance of the bay, where there is a much higher build up of corals and there is also more movement of the water; You turn over, so that Kiki-hime is right side up and you are upside down; she smiles, her eyes alight with wonder as you rush through the water.

The trio slows and then circles slowly around a fourth mermaid, who is laying atop some rocks which have been scoured clean of algae, seaweed, mussels, barnacles, and any other oceanic detritus. She is pale, very pale, her skin nearly translucent. Her scales are a soft light green or pale blue, and the edges shimmer faintly silver. The ningyo's eyes track up until they see you and Kiki-hime, and then she props herself up on her arms, looking at you with a calm so deep it might be Zen. The trio slide down to join her, tracing her arms with their fingers and touching the heavy silver jewelery she's adorned with. Clearly antique, yet heavily burnished, the tarnish worn away with what must have been fine sand.

The grandmother rises up from behind her, and looks over the four mermaids. You feel that aching vibration in your arm again, jolting through your bones to your horns, and the trio scatter, to circle the altar slowly.

You can tell it's an altar because the grandmother mermaid is offering you an ancient Japanese sword of bronze, and then she moves back to hold the pale mermaids shoulder with her free hand. The mermaid princess looks at you complacently, clearly either unaware or unconcerned by the situation.

A faint memory of having been in this situation several times before flickers through your mind, but the fugue passes almost instantly.

[] Search your memories for those instances. They seem relevant – for once.

[X] Take the sword, but don't do anything yet. See if you can learn more.

This is....well, it's something. You don't know quite what, but you're pretty sure you know what they think it's supposed to be. Kiki-hime squeezes your wrist reassuringly, her eyes on you. You know you've been in situations like these before....several times. Back then.

You try and augment your Water Eyes with the power of Fire, but that's a wash – you're in the ocean, dealing with creatures of purity and water. Primal water. The Void, though....you close your eyes, trying to merge the Void eyes with your own, opening them, and you see the sheer intensity of their power – they're almost completely creatures of raw Jing made material. They're less living creatures than they are life-creatures. No wonder their flesh either grants immortality or kills you – a single bite of their flesh contains enough life force to repopulate the planet several times over.

With a shudder you close your Void Eyes to that horrific brightness, and look at Kiki-hime. She nods slowly, supporting you, her Wood Eyes gleaming and hopeful. You close your eyes, casting your mind back....

>You lift the sacrificial dagger, the virgin man on the altar quiet and still under the spells. You close your eyes....and shatter the dagger with a single squeeze, to the dismay of the onlookers. “Find someone else to cure your lands. I won't kill someone just because someone else tells me I should.” You turn, knowing that they'll languish under the curse until they find someone who will kill a stranger to end all their lives....and some day, you know someone will.

>”It is a simple choice. One life, and my death, or ten lives, and your return home.” The wolf-masked....thing, because the few glimpses you caught hint at nothing human being under that cloak or that mask...the thing slowly stalks around you. You look at the ten children, and the single adult. There are no words, and if nothing else, the promise is binding; the spell that conjured the thing can only be broken with a sacrifice, and you couldn't harm it even with your most powerful Barrier techniques. You look into the woman's eyes; neither of you needs words; the children might not be hers, but they're ~children~. But rather than pulling the lever that will slowly lower her into the acid, you pull Ryuu Wakaba's nodachi from ~Nowhere~ and slice through the cage, the chains, her collar, and her neck in one stroke. The Wolf-masked thing howls in anger at being cheated of its cruel game, but the children vanish, returning home as the creature fades, slowly. “I said I'd make the choice. I didn't say you would get to enjoy it in any ways at all.” You glare at the fading demon that thought you could be bribed into killing children to return home. “Bakayero.”

>Facing the altar, you study the woman bound to it, and then turn, looking at the dead forests that surround the temple. “A sacrifice of a virgin....” You look at her, and feel the dryness of the air, the lifelessness of the barren lands, the agony of the black plains under the burning many-eyed sun and the roiling yellow skies. You make your decision and step close to her, gripping her throat in your talons. She closes her eyes expecting death....she cries out in shock and pain, and then looks down at you, appalled and confused. You kneel, wiping her virgin's blood on the symbol of the god of this temple. Well, ex-virgin now, since you sacrificed her virginity. The instant the blood touches the symbol, you can feel the waters rising from under the earth, feel the moisture filling the air. “Nothing said I had to kill anyone,” you murmur, snapping the chains that bind her to the altar, though she's blushing and ashamed.

You open your eyes, and look at the complacent, almost mindless sacrifice, and then up at the powerful, ancient grandmother of mermaids. You remember what you learned of the legends, and what Shoko-san said to Er Yin. A ningyo cast up on a beach meant calamities and disasters would come, or great storms. It never said they were ALWAYS dead, but the legends said they were always hurt or wounded at least if they weren't dead.

Maybe you did learn something in hell.

[] Give her a minor injury, and take her to the beach for the others to see. You'll see how it goes.
[] The possibility – no, inevitability, you'll make sure of it – of her death warning thousands, maybe millions of others is worth the sacrifice.

[XXX] Let Kiki-hime ~successfully~ use her Wood Eyes on you. That's some help that you know won't go wrong.
[XX] Take the sword in your left hand and end the possibility of other sacrifices. You're not that kind of girl.

You turn to Kiki-hime and take both her hands in yours and close your eyes....you can still 'see' her confusion with Water Eyes, but then you drop your Water Eyes and open your flesh and blood ones. You can feel her power, just faintly, just at the edges of your mind, that soothing, soft sensation of hearing bamboo rustling in the breeze, or watching the wind make patterns in the grass....she smiles brightly and suddenly, and the sensation of her power fades.

Kiki-hime removes one hand from your grasp and takes the bronze sword, setting it at your feet. The grandmother mermaid looks confused, but only slides back in the water, while the others slowly swim close, watching raptly. She then takes your left hand and slowly guides you to the mermaid princess, who watches complacently, never taking her eyes from you. Then – holding tightly to your right wrist as you grip her wrist – she guides your left hand to the center of the strange mermaid's chest, above the ningyo's sternum. You take a split second to flick the bronze sword into ~Nowhere~ with your tail. Fuck that nonsense, you're a better woman than that.

Then Kiki-hime swims back a little to give you space, and nods solemnly, a smile gracing your wife's soft lips and trust in her sky blue eyes.

Despite the fact you didn't plan on hurting the docile mermaid, your wife is disagreeing with you, and suggesting you specifically hurt her with your left hand, and not a minor injury, though it doesn't look like she's suggesting anything life threatening either. You know they can be killed by natural forces – storms and the like, and that cutting them up and cooking them can kill them, so you suspect that even with all that life force....

Life force.

They have no genders. No sex organs. Yet they have so much Jing they could populate the entire world. One bite of flesh granting immortality. A ritual, an obvious ritual, carried out by Horobi before you. A compassionate, kind person, despite his role. Making sacrifices....and being able to impregnate dragon girls. Not harming anyone more than he had to.

The destroyer, granting life.

You draw your sapphire talons down her chest, not too deep, but deep enough to leave four furrows long her pristine flesh. The mermaid princess looks down startled, and crimson blooms in streamers from her wounds. Her hands touch her chest, as she watches the streamers fo blood pulse from her chest....and slowly become steamers, tendrils....and then firm into small globules, and puling ribbons. The ribbons break part and the bubbles of crimson pop, and you and Kiki-hime and the pretty ningyo stare in awe as tiny ningyo are born of the blood you shed, swimming clumsily around you in fits and starts. Colorful as rainbow koi, they dart and swim and the trio of mermaids swoop and dive through the water around you, catching them and herding them towards the grandmother's coils.

The grandmother of mermaids slowly wraps herself into a slowly twisting ball of muscular coils, keeping the tiny newborns from wandering too far as they coalesce and form from the blood of the 'sacrifice'. Said sacrifice seems as awestruck as you are, and the grandmother mermaid seems content as well despite the lack of killing. It doesn't take too long for the wounds to seal closed, and the mermaid traces the shining lines along her chest in awe. Her companions too move close and touch the strange scars, while Kiki-hime crowds up against you, her eyes filled with wonder. And grinning like an auntie, too.

The grandmother of mermaids slowly swims away, herding the cloud of tiny mermaids off, with the trio of mermaids following and keeping stragglers from being left behind. The would-be sacrifice starts after them, then slows, looking back at you. She swims back to you and stops looking at you with strange, calm eyes. Slowly she twins her fingers in your left hand talons, and lowers her head, reaching up to her face with her right hand, her hair momentarily hiding her face.

When she looks up, you can see the faintest wisps of blood along her lips and she holds her fingers before your face. Fingers which hold a small piece of fresh meat. Her glowing eyes bore into yours as she offers you her own living flesh. But that's not half as shocking as what Kiki-hime does.

She nods, slowly, calmly, smiling beatifically.

You know, you've played tongue tag with some of the most beautiful spirit-children in the world, and you've performed tongue-play with them in A LOT of ways.

But kamishit, Kiki-hime, you're going to be the only dragonette ever who can literally say they've sucked down the tongue of a woman right ~after~ you got her pregnant.

You lean forward, trying really, really hard not to think about what you're doing here, and accept ningyo-hime's offering. You swallow it....and it goes down easily, sweetness bursting through your mouth as though it were some kind of sweetmeat or rich dessert-meat. You feel your pearl dissolve slowly, it's essence breaking down under the massive wash of Jing energy that suffuses your body. It doesn't just dissolve though....it percolates, it flows through your body on the tides of Chi and permeates your human body and your Shen flesh alike.

Your heart suddenly thunders in your chest, and the elation becomes a roaring tide of raw, untrammeled power through your veins, spreading out through your flesh and to your skin and scales and hair and horns and claws and fur. The mermaid princess bows her head, protecting her eyes, and Kiki-hime turns away as a flash of sapphire light erupts around you and a surge or water explodes from you. You keep a tight grip in Kiki-hime's wrist, preventing her from being flung away from your protection, and the ocean calms down.

You drift in place, and Kiki-hime snuggles close to you, holding you tight, her body warm against yours. The mermaid reaches up, and carefully, almost tenderly caresses one of your horns. You know all it would take is a thought and you can call her back – call any save the grandmother to you. And in one hundred years, you will be called upon to perform the ritual again, returning the ningyo to the seas where they live. She smiles, a child-like smile of happiness, and then turns, swimming away to rejoin her new born family.

You're absolutely certain you won't need to have one wash up on shore now – soon, they'll be seen on every beach of Japan, their arrival a warning to all who remember.

You slowly turn back to the beach and carry Kiki-hime with you. She's snuggling you like a kitten and is thoroughly and unabashedly pleased with herself. You kind of don't blame her, I mean, she's just made you functionally immortal....

….

Holy crap. You're not a dragonette any longer. You're a fucking immortal. Bona-fide, nigh-unkillable, blessed by the kami fucking IMMORTAL.

You change direction and swim at an angle towards the beach at top speed and practically explode out of the water, arcing nearly a hundred feet and landing in a crouch, Kiki-hime held in a princess carry, at your camp. Your arrival, being rather unexpected, prompts immediate reactions from Kiku-chan, Akari-chan, and Yui-chan, who are up and arranged in a triangle to protect Jinyuu and Er Yin, while Shoko and Inau both look startled and grab their weapons out of ~nowhere~.

Yuuhi-chan looks up from the melon she's eating and smiles. “Hi!” Well, yeah, okay. Sure, why not.

[] Okay, uh, at ease, thanks, well done.
[] ….Kiki-hime, do you have any idea of what you've done?
[] Check to see if you've gained Horobi's power now....
[] Yuuhi-chan a cute.
[] You need alcohol, now.

I don't know how much near-deathless we are, but we need to get the equivalent for each of our wives.

If they want it, that is.
>>
>>40583522
I'm sure spirit children do better than regular mortals with it, but there is still the possibile fatal results of eating their flesh.
>>
>>
Kiki-hime did one hell of a job.
>>
>>40583637

I'm not saying they should eat the mermaid's flesh, I'm saying that there is certainly equivalents we should find.

[X] Right, first things first, second things second, third things third. Now if you only knew which was which.

“Very well done, Yui-chan, that was perfect. It's only us, sorry, but things have gotten a little strange-” Kiku-chan mutters some dire insult. “-and I'm a little, um....well I'll explain in a minute.”

You hug Kiki-hime tightly and kiss her deeply and slowly, which she reciprocates with great enthusiasm. When you finally break the kiss, you whisper to her softly, “Kiki-hime, do you know what you did to me?”

She smiles at you, her eyes filled with mischief. “I gave Ryu-chan my power, like Yui-chan and Er Yin-sensei gave theirs, and like Akari-chan gave hers. So you can concentrate on the important things, and we do not have to worry about you nearly as much.” She touches your nose with her fingertip. “I made Ryuu Ryukusa into Ryuu Ryukusa. You are just who you have always been. The protector of even youkai girl's smiles, only now you won't get hurt so much.”

….it's really kind of hard to argue with her logic.

If it is Kiki-hime, it can't be helped, I suppose.” Though your body feels vastly different, your powers feel exactly the same – you can sense the Power of Horobi just within your reach, waiting for you to call upon it. “But we are going to have words about this later, kasan!” you murmur back. She only smiles sweetly in response.

Kiki-hime allows you to slip away and you lean over and kiss Yuuhi-chan on the head. She smiles up at you, and you stroke her ears. Her head immediately drops, and her tail swishes back metronome slow, but she doesn't drop her watermelon. You walk around the group and take Shoko-san's sake jar, and drain about half of it, your cheeks flushing and your blood rushing in your ears. Nonetheless, you feel the control you have over the alcohol despite that.

You can also feel the damage in your mind is no longer a problem. It's not entirely healed, but you're not going to suffer flashbacks or intrusive memories, much less the more dangerous fugues that went with them.

“Please gather round the fire. I have many things to tell you, and it may take some time.” The others look at one another or wander over to the fire as you kneel, setting the sake beside you. Er Yin sits cross legged, and Kiku-chan sits in her lap; neither of them looks surprised concerned. They knew this was coming. Yuuhi drowses where she was sitting, and Shoko gently – and cautiously – moves her to the fireside. Kiki-hime sits at your left, while Akari sits to your right, and Yui chan sits next to her. Inau-kun sits opposite you smiling....and then she looks at you, her expression changing from happiness to confusion to shock.

You lift a finger to your lips and she nods quickly, once. Shoko notices the exchange but looks confused. Akari noticed as well, of course, but shows no sign, naturally.

Once everyone is settled and calm, you take a deep breath and look down at the sand. “For all of you, the story begins a day and a half ago, when I went to see Ooya-san about the household.” You close your eyes and calm yourself as best you can. “For me, the story begins two hundred and seven years ago....”

Amazing. Simply amazing.

Question: is there a special bond/pact between us and Ningyo Hime, now, or is it just something that happen in the lives of the Japanese mermaids
>>
>>40584008
He is right about my moodiness, but if I was that bad off I wouldn't have run Ryukuza Quest. That IS why I didn't run it yesterday, as I'd planned.

When my brain chemistry is off it's a little hard to keep things nice and fun.
>>
>>40584071
Ther eis a bond between horobi and the ningyo, so there is a bond between Ningyo-hime and Ryukusa. The ningyo reproduce only through Horobi accepting a 'sacrifice' from them, and in return, they die as part of a 'natural cycle' to provide warnings to the people of Japan of disasters Horobi will cause. This way they have a controlled population and the kami and the people are given their warnings.

It's a symbiotic relationship that has been out of balance for some time with a lack of Horobi to restore the ningyo to their proper numbers.

Thank you for Running, XS.
Now excuse me while I laugh maniacally at what Kiki did to us in this thread.
Nigh Immortality is an amazing gift.
>>
Wait a minute

>no longer dragonette
>an Immortal

I'm pretty sure this mean we can make Yui pregnant
>>
>>40584178
Would she have produced far more offspring if we sacrificed her properly?
>>
>>40584192
No, sorry. Ryukusa's powers are still the same.

But it does mean Ryukusa could become pregnant.
>>
>>40584225
Oh my...
>>
>>40584178
So basically, they want to murder Oba-shit.
>>
>>40584221
Yes, she would have, but the amount she gave birth to is adequate if not entirely optimal. On the other hand, she could produce more, under the right circumstances, probably in a few decades as opposed to having the next one grow for the next one-hundred years.
>>
>>40584265
That's kind of a complex idea for them. They're not that intelligent as humans understand intelligence. They're more akin to a natural force than they are anything else. they're sentient, but only barely sapient. Even the grandmother and the princess are only slightly more sapient than their kin.
>>
>>40584178
You know, seeing how many things went out of balance because of Obaa-san's actions makes me wonder how bad her karma is.

And if it is Really Bad, did she accumulate it all and is going to pay for it all at once when Ryukuza finally deals with her, or did she already pay everything by suffering through a couple decades of really shitty luck?

On second thought, don't answer that, the image of her having a constant raincloud hanging over her head and all the birds in the country deciding to take a dump just where it would hit her is too amusing to give up.

I can finally attend one of these threads and I can't remember any of the questions that I've wanted to ask. At least it was fun to read.
>>
>>40584465
Toss them in a pastebin and link them at the end of the next thread.
>>
>>40584557
I'll write them down if I ever remember them.
>>
>>40584465
As long as it's understood some questions can't be answered and some answers may not make sense.
>>
>>40584697
Understood. I think they were more about clarifying parts of the setting and the system than about the plot.

Go to bed
