Dice Mechanics: Unless otherwise stated, I'll take the best of the first three.

Most of the time, I’ll ask you to roll a 3d10. There will be a set DC, and as long as two of the dice are equal to or greater, the roll is considered a success.
Some rolls will have a major/minor DC; hitting the major DC will obviously have better outcomes.
Crit-Successes occur by rolling over the (major) DC on all three dice in one roll.
Crit-Fails occur by rolling under the (minor)DC on all three dice in one roll.
Crit-Rolls will override any other rolls, as long as the crit is within the first three.

On Write Ins: They’re pretty much always accepted, and if I particularly like them and they fit with the winning vote, they may be included despite not garnering much support.

With that said, let’s go!

***
“Ngghh…” you groan out. Your head is pounding. You can feel the blood rushing to your skull, and heavens-damn, that hurts. What the hell happened...? Were you ambushed…?

“Oh! He’s waking up!” Says someone right from above you. You groan again, and strain to open your eyes. The light dazzles you, and your eyes shut back closed.

“H-he is!? Thank heavens, I thought I mighta’ killed him or somethin’.” Says someone else, from significantly farther away. The new voice sounds deeper, more gruff. “Wait there, I’ll go get some water.” Footsteps.

You try to open your eyes again, hoping that you might have acclimated a little. Your vision is blurry, but you can make out the shape of someone’s head. A guardian angel, maybe?

(1/?)
>>
>>40575396
…No, actually, fuck angels. Your pain-addled mind doesn’t know precisely why, but you really fucking hate angels. If that is an angel, you’re going stab it with your saber.

Your vision and head slowly clear, revealing that whoever is looking after you is most certainly not an angel, though you’d be willing to say she’s pretty enough to be one. You rack your head trying to come up with a name.

…Oh, right. Katherine Tempesta, wasn’t it? Though no small part of you doubts that’s actually her name. A wind mage with the last name 'Tempesta'? What a coincidence...

The details filter in quickly. The two of you had met on the upper deck a short while ago, traded stories, and decided to go downstairs into the lower decks of the airship to find the sparring rooms when she told you that she somehow managed to hold onto the ship while she was outside in the storm. You figured she must have been fairly talented.

Right, so what happened after that? Oh yeah, you remember now...

A pair of complete and utter morons were arguing in the sparring room. The situation escalated, and someone was sent flying, coincidentally straight into you. You fell to the floor. You were probably knocked out from the impact.

Apparently, you had hit your head rather violently, as Katherine, or Kat as she had let you call her, was looking at you, brow furrowed and lips frowning in worry.

“Hey,” she murmurs, “you okay? You took a pretty big fall there.”
>>
>>40575444
With a pained grunt, you manage to sit up, kneading your forehead with a hand. “’M fine,” you grunt, “Need ‘sprin. Though.” Kat blinks in confusion, seemingly unable to understand your slurred words.

“Aspirin.” You clarify. Your head pounds again, as if to spite you before you can take care of the pain. “Outside pocket. Backpack.”

Katherine nods, though she seems reluctant to leave your side. You flap a hand at her, your other still rubbing away at your head. She shoots you one last worried glance before she stalks off in the direction of your bag, seemingly placed into a corner after you had blacked out.

You take a few deep breaths and close your eyes. You always take a couple bottles of painkillers around with you; migraines are a bitch, especially when you have them as often as you do.

Two simultaneous calls of “Here,” alert you to a small pill bottle and a paper cup full of water being offered to you. You take them both, setting the water on your side. You shake out a pair of capsules, pop them into your mouth, and wash them down with a few swigs of water.

You sigh in relief as the pain slowly begins to recede, though it’s probably just the placebo effect at this point. You look up at whomever handed you the water.

(3/?)
>>
>>40575462

And up, and up. Damn, this guy is tall. He has a few inches on you at least, maybe half a foot. Clearly, puberty was kind to him.
Fortunately, the boy’s height certainly isn’t going to keep you from dispensing due justice.

Feeling the familiar rush of mana into muscle, you quickly Reinforce your arm, and you lash out straight into the asshole’s crotch.
You smirk in satisfaction as his eyes widen and he lets out a pained squeal. Your smile only grows as he sinks to the ground, tears of pain running down his face. You might have snickered a little as he curled up into the fetal position, moaning about his ‘family jewels.’ No one would be able to prove that though.

“W-Will!” Says Kat in alarm, glancing at the boy in alarm, then back at you. “That was totally uncalled for!”

“Uncalled for? No, I’m pretty sure it was totally called for. He knocked me out for a couple minutes and gave me a killer migraine. I’m sure he’ll get over being punched in the balls after a while. And if he doesn’t, I’ll be sure to patch him up.”

Kat’s frown deepens. ”Well if you’re sure.” She shakes her head. “Remind me never to piss you off, then. I shudder to think of what would happen if I ever did.” She sighs in acceptance. “I guess you’re all better now, then?”

You roll your shoulders. You reach up to your face, thankful to know that your glasses are still on your face. You knew that sticking enchantment was a good investment of your time. You take a moment to adjust them.

“Mmhmm.” You hum. “I suppose my fill of schadenfreude is sated, for the moment.”

“That’s the best I’m going to get out of you, isn’t it?” Asks Kat, raising an eyebrow. “Well, whatever. As long as you didn’t cause any permanent damage.” Kat pauses. “You didn’t, did you?”

(4/?)
>>
>>40575507

You don’t answer her, and instead walk over to the whimpering lump on the ground. “Hey you, Drama Queen. Mind answering a couple questions for me?” You nudge him with your toe.

“’S long you don’t hit me in the nuts again,” groans out the lump. The boy slowly stretches himself out along the ground, his hands retreating from his crotch. He moans in pain as he rolls over onto his back, then stands up to his full height.

Seems like your earlier guess at his height was fairly spot on. The boy towers over you by about six inches and you end up having to incline your head a little to look up at his head.

The first thing you notice about him is his bright, bleached-blonde hair. It’s cut short and messy, most of it swept back. You don’t think he was cut by any sort of professional; you wouldn’t be surprised if he had cut it himself. His eyes are a strange shade of grey you haven’t seen before.

His outfit consists of a dark grey top under a black leather jacket, the zipper open. He wears a pair of dark blue jeans fastened with a belt. His clothes look well-used, though they look a little loose and don’t quite fit. Probably hand-me-downs.

You send out a quick pulse of mana, and find that his aura level is actually fairly comparable to Kat’s. Seems like he was out of your range earlier.

He flinches back a little as you look him over. You sigh. “Look big guy,” you begin, “I’m not going to punch you in the nuts again, as long as you answer my questions.” He hesitates to answer, uncertain. Eventually, he nods in acceptance.

“Right, first off…”

First things first, you suppose.
“…What’s your name? May as well exchange pleasantries with the fellow I punched in the nether regions.”
The boy winces again, but composes himself. “Th’ name’s Kanji. Kanji Takahashi.”
“Kanji?” You ask, curious. “Are you from the East Empire? Or the Free Cities?” The boy doesn’t look anything like, well, you. Hell, he had blonde hair, which is pretty rare out east, as far as you’re aware.
“Neither, actually. My mom’s from the Empire, though, and my family actually moved to the Ravaged Continent ‘fore I was born. Neither of my parents look anything like Easterners, case you’re wondering why I don’t.”
You process this information in your head. “I see. You went to the Old World to find out where to find Nova, then?”
The boy suddenly stiffens when you mention that he was on the Old Continent, but relaxes as you finish. Curious. Seems he has a few secrets, too. You decide not to press him on it, though; beginning a new life is what moving to the Ravaged Continent, means, after all. “Uh. Y-yeah. I needed some info on Nova, an’ all that. Nobody knows where it’ll be next, ya know?”
You nod in agreement. “Right. As for my next question..."

(1/?)
>>
>>40578988

"How the hell were you blown across the room? There wasn’t any kind of breeze or anything when Kat and I walked in,” you say, gesturing to the blonde next to you, “so it couldn’t have been wind magic.”

The boy’s face scrunches up in anger and frustration. “Oh, that? That wasn’t me, that was the other asshole in the room. The guy was crazy strong, see? The guy’s punch just sent me flying as soon as it hit. If I hadn’t Reinforced when I did, I’d probably be sportin’ a bruise right about now.

“You’re right about the wind mage thing, too. He was a friggin’ fire mage! Probably a martial artist, too, now that I think about it.
"Anyway, the guy was an asshole, and pretty fuckin’ stupid. He wouldn’t believe that I didn’t steal his precious scarf, even though I told him I wasn’t anywhere near the lower levels, and even before then, when I said I had my stuff stolen, too.”

Kanji proceeds to ramble off on the guy that decked him. You tune him out, reflecting on the information.

Before Kanji can go off on another spiel over whoever knocked his ass flat, you say:

>”A thief?”

“What did the fire mage look like, exactly? The one that knocked you on your ass?” you ask Kanji. “I think I’d like to pay him a little visit too, if you catch my drift.”

“Him? Yeah, I remember how he looks real well,” says Kanji, stroking his chin. “Alright, so first off, his hair? It’s pink. Flamin’ pink. Super spiky too, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have stayed up without hair gel.

“Even his clothes made him look like a douche. He wore this big black coat without sleeves, think it had gold trim, too. It was open wide, so it was exposin’ his chest and everything; I saw him flirtin’ with a couple of girls in the galley earlier. Idiot was shot down every time.” Kanji smirks at this.

“Other than that? The guy was LOUD. Louder than me. Ya wouldn’t be able ta lose him in a crowd, even if ya tried.

“I think that’s everything I can remember.” Finishes Kanji with a nod.
“So, loud asshole with pink hair? Got it.” You say. “Next, you mentioned a thief?”

(1/2)
>>
>>40581046

“Right, the thief. Nobody has any clue what they look like. Other than that, I’ve been hearing that someone’s been stealing tons of stuff all around the ship from people. The only ones that seem t’ be safe are the ones who locked up their cubicles.

"They're super sneaky, too. Nobody's managed to even get. The teacher that's on the ship is a little pissed about it, from what I heard.

“Anyway, the pink-haired idiot apparently saw ‘em go down here. I was in here looking for what the thief stole from me, since I figured the thief wouldn’t go anywhere with a ton of people. I was searchin’ around here, and just when I was about to give up, the bastard came in here and we had an argument. You know the rest.” Kanji finishes his short spiel. He scratches his head. “Er, I’m sorry about that, by the way. I guess it was kinda my fault- I yelled at him first, thinkin’ he was the culprit, before I figured he was too loud t’ have stolen anythin’.”

“Well,” you sigh, “I suppose it’s fine. Anyway, if there is a thief skulking around here…”

Well, your conscience probably couldn’t take it if you let this thief go. “We should probably go looking around for them,” you say.

Kat looks at you in surprise. “Really? We’re going thief-hunting?”

“Apparently so. Why? Is there a problem?”

Kat shakes her head. “Nah, it’s not that. I just didn’t think of you as the type to care about these sorts of things. You don’t really look the part of a valiant hero or anything, is what I’m saying.”

You frown at that. “You don’t exactly have to look like a knight in shining armor to do good things, you know.”

“That’s not what I meant.” Katherine huffs. “It’s just, you have this apathetic look on your face. Your expression doesn’t change very much, you know?”

…You’re not THAT bad at emoting, are you? “Yes, well, my ability to express my emotions, aside, we’re going to go looking for this thief. Do the two of you have any ideas as to where they could be?”

“Well,” starts Kanji. “The pink dude said he saw the thief down in the lower levels of the ship. He seemed pretty sure about it, and if anything, the guy seemed pretty sincere about seeing whoever was impersonatin’ me earlier.”

“Then it’s decided. We’ll go ahead and search the lower decks of the ship and see if our illustrious thief is down there.” With no further objections from either Kat or Kanji, the three of you leave the sparring chamber.
***
The three of you slink around, careful to stay as quiet as possible. You’d have thought that there would at least be a few guards down here, but instead, the halls were almost completely empty except for you three. It’s strange.

You’d been sending out pulses of mana every few minutes just to make sure you’d know if there were someone around the corner, but so far, you haven’t felt ANYTHING except for some mostly stationary signatures.

Just in case, you send out another pulse of mana…

…Nothing. Well, what did you expect? It’s been nothing the past nine times, too.

Soon, the three of you come to an intersection. The hall splits into three, one hall leading to the left, one to the right, and one in the center.

There aren’t any signs to point you which way leads where, which is frustrating. Do they just expect all of the employees to memorize the layout of the ship?

Well, whatever. “Seems like we’re at a crossroads.” You say, an annoyed sigh punctuating your statement.

“Yep. And without a map, or even a clue as to where we’re going. Doesn’t this seem familiar?” Kat grumbles.

“Hey, the last time wasn’t my fault,” you say. “At any rate, we’re going to have make a choice here. Where do we go?”

“Well, we could always split up and each take different paths. That way, even if two of us took the wrong path the third’ll find them. That is, if the path doesn’t split anymore.” Kanji suggests.

Kanji has a point. If the three of you all went down one path, the thief could conceivablly escape past you all if you choose incorrectly.

On the other hand, you’ve had some experience with splitting the party, and it’s rarely pretty if you aren’t prepared.

Should you…

I don't remember much about combinatorics, but if you look at say, 7 (which at best is a 5,1,1) you have 3.5% of getting that or less, and that is just the "guaranteed failure" pieice.
If you add total of 8's odds (1,2,5 for instance) and exclude the chance of having one dice beat the DC (1,1,6 or 6,1,1 or 1,6,1) then you have 5.3% chance, and I'm figuring if we keep going things will get ugly.

“Let’s NOT split the party, yeah? I’d rather we be able to watch each other’s backs.” You say. Yeah, you’d had your fill of party splitting when you were a kid. You learned that it was never a good idea, especially when you’re on an airship full of possibly-hostile battlemages.

“We’ll head down the left. Keep close.” Katherine and Kanji nod, accepting your orders.
***

A short while later, the three of you arrive at a large pair of sliding doors, both made of steel. Fortunately, the doors don’t have much in the way of security; you press the large button to the left, and the doors open with a hiss. You all walk inside, and the doors close back up behind you.

The large hall you walk into doesn’t look nearly as foreboding as the steel doors implied.
It’s actually fairly ‘homey’ in a military-chic sort of way. The entire hall is littered with large tables, benches on either side of them. Plates, complete with napkins and utensils, sit on top of the tables. Seems like you found the mess hall.

To the far end, the door to the kitchens is ajar. Perhaps your thief decided to get themselves a snack?

Your hands twitch to signal your two companions with hand-signs, but you quickly realize that they’d have no idea what you were doing. Instead you just nod over at them in the direction of the kitchens.
They nod back, just as silent. The three of you sneak over to the doors. You pulse your mana outwards, and just as you suspected, someone was in there, raiding the pantry.

“On three.“ You whisper. “One, two…”
“THREE!”

The three of you dive into the door, expecting a fight.

What you find instead is a young man, conked out on the floor, holding his stomach and a dazed smile on his face. He’s drooling.

“Well, seems like we found the hothead you were talking about Kanji.” Katherine says.

He looks pretty much exactly as Kanji described him, pink hair and sleeveless black waistcoat and all. And to be honest, you’re pretty much certain he’s not the thief, whoever he is.

You frown at the pathetic little lump on the ground. For a moment, you think of cruelly disrupting its rest, but you think better of it. Instead, you kneel down and shake the boy’s shoulder.

The fool’s sentence is cut off as he is promptly kicked right where Kanji was only a few minutes ago. Kanji winces in sympathy.

“O-oww… Ya coulda just said ‘no’ ya know…” he whines from the ground.

“I’m afraid my father always taught me to be wary of strangers. Seeing as you haven’t even given us your name, I surmised that that was an appropriate response.” Kat says, smile scarily cold. She glances up at you. “Do with him as you will. I’ll watch outside, in case the thief decides to duck in here.”

She stalks out of the door, the boy still groaning in pain.

A short while later, and it seems like the boy healed up most of his injuries thanks to his aura. You send a quick mana pulse to get a better gauge of his aura levels, finding that he has a significantly higher amount than even Kanji. Seems this guy was out of your range earlier too, while you were on the deck.

“My name? Ya mean, ya never heard o’ me?” Asks the boy, seemingly shocked.

…You can feel yourself wanting to punch him in his face more and more with every passing second, and the idiot hasn’t even told you his name yet.

“Wait, I got it, I got it! Ya guys prolly just a forgot, right?”
He cracks his knuckles, smiling again. “Well, well, I guess I’ll just have ta educate ya simpletons.” You’re a tad surprised he even knows the word ‘simpleton,’ though you don’t express the sentiment. “Anyway, the name’s…” He pauses, and you can feel the aura in the room shift.

He punches a fist into the palm of his other hand, an impressive jet of flame bursting forth from his hands. “Danny Summers Vetterlein! And don’t ya forget again, got it, chucklehead!?” He poses, the flames wrapping around his form, leaving his clothes and skin untouched.

You have to admit, that’s rather impressive control over his magic. You keep your face completely blank, though. “Sorry, never heard of you.” You say, your voice flat as a board.

To your amusement, that completely stops him in his tracks. “W-what? Never? Damn. I thought that internet profile would totally work, too…”
This guy’s opinion of himself is so inflated, you could pop it with a pin.

“Well, your internet fame aside, what exactly can you tell me about the thief?”

“Whaddaya mean?”

“Name, appearance, magic, anything?”

“Oh. Right, gotcha. A’ight, so after I smacked that knucklehead back in the sparring room,” Kanji frowns, annoyed that Danny didn’t even seem to remember him, “I snuck down to the lower levels of the ship under the nose of all the guards-“

“There weren’t any guards,” you interrupt.

“Well, duh.” Danny rolls his eyes. “If there weren’t any, that means I snuck past ALL of ‘em right? Right. Anyway, after a while, I came to this big intersection in the halls. You know where I’m talking about, yeah?” You nod at him in confirmation.

“When I got there, I saw that someone else was already there, wearin’ something’ that eerily looked like a black leather jacket. Just when I was gonna smack ‘em in their dumb face, they noticed me!

“Then I felt this weird sorta… I dunno how to describe it. ‘Coldness, I guess?’ Yeah, coldness, wrap itself around me. Lemme tell ya, I was pretty shocked when that happened- it takes a lot for a natural fire mage ta feel the chill, am I right?

“It felt like I was completely dumped into freezing water, except I was dry. And when I tried to move my body, I found I was frozen! Not in ice, but I couldn’t move at all! Whatever kind of magic they used musta’ been crazy strong.

“Anyway, the bastard just went and clonked me out on the head, and I found myself locked up in the pantry.”

>>
>>40585598

“So you’re saying you didn’t get a glimpse of their face, or anything?”

Danny shakes his head in the negative. “Nope. That was another weird thing- it was like they were a blur, or something. Every time I looked at ‘em, it was like I was starin’ outta the corner of my eye, even if I was lookin’ right at their face. I couldn’t even get a glimpse of whatever weapon they used to knock me out.”

You slump at his words. That was… wholly unhelpful. You still didn’t have any appearance to match to your thief. Still, judging by the looks of it, the thief is a talented darkness mage- immobilization and concealment were both spells that easily slotted themselves into use by dark-affinity mana.

“Oh wait! Just remembered something important. Whoever it was, they were mumbling something about explosives, I think. Managed to catch their words using my senses before I was knocked out.”

…Explosives? Wait, were they planning on blowing up the ship!?
If that’s the case, then the most logical place the thief would be going is the armory; there would probably be a great deal of explosives in there. However, that still leaves the question as to why the thief stole Danny’s scarf and Kanji’s… what did they steal from Kanji? His back-up jacket? Whatever it was, neither of those things make much sense to be stolen by a magical terrorist.

“You’re sure the thief said something about ‘explosives?’”

“Positive. You could give me a truth potion, and I’d come out clean.”

“I’m guessing you didn’t see where the thief went?”

Danny shakes his head again. “Sorry man.”

You sigh again in frustration. “Well, that’s one mode of questioning gone…” You mutter. You turn away from Danny and start walking out of the door.

“H-hey wait! What about me?”

You turn around, quirking an eyebrow. “What about you?”

(3/?)

>>40585633
“Lemme help! I’ve got a score to settle with that guy, and I want my damn scarf back!” Danny looks at you, complete resolution in his posture and expression. You doubt you could make him refuse, even if you tried.

“…Fine. ” You allow. “You can tag along if you want. Just try not to screw this up. And I’d highly suggest you not try to hit on Katherine again. Seems like she hasn’t had too many good experiences with suitors.”

“Yeah, yeah, I got it, I got it. Don’t hit on the blondie, and keep my eyes on the prize. No problem, Boss!” He shoots you a thumbs-up and a brilliant smile.

You stare at him in sheer disbelief. “…My name’s William. Just call me Will. Please, don’t do that again.”

“Whatever ya say, Boss!”

Heavens, you’re going to punch him in the face someday. He’s almost as annoying as fucking angels.
***

After meeting back up with Kat, who told you that she’d seen nothing happen outside, the four of you come back across the intersection.
You quickly send out a pulse of mana again…

…What? You notice something you didn’t before…

Another quick pulse of mana confirms your suspicions. You walk over to a darkened corner of the room, and instead of using the ambient mana around you, allow your aura to stretch out from the confines of your body.

There!

You retract your aura to keep yourself from wasting it, and tap at a precise point on the floor.

An invisibility and protection ward, you think. Someone didn’t want anyone to see what had happened here.

Now that you know where the ward is, you let your instinct take over, sharpened over the period of hundreds of missions. You reach out with your aura again, allowing your senses to reach out and grasp at the meaning behind the various runes inlaid into the ward’s design.

Your hands move in precise motions, drawing runes in the air. Your aura fills each rune with power, and another design, similar to the ward, comes to life at your fingertips. And with a gesture, you activate it.

The ward shatters, your counter-ward shattering alongside it in an act of mutual annihilation.
With a tired sigh, you open your eyes, not even aware that you had closed them in the first place.

“-ll? Will!”

You groan, and rub at your eyes. Ward-breaking, no matter how many times you do it, always takes a lot out of you. Fortunately, you’ve long since acclimated to the drowsiness it gives you, and shake yourself off. “I’m fine,” you say. “Just a tad tired.”

“Anyway, let’s see what my handiwork netted us, shall we?”

You look at the corner. The spell should lift any second now…
Ah. So that’s what it was concealing. You grimace.

(1/?)

>>40586243

Sitting in the corner is a dead body, blood still soaking the unfortunate man’s coat.
The others look on, shocked.

“W-what…? Was that there this entire time?” wonders Kat.

“Apparently so.” You say nonchalantly. At this point, cadavers don’t particularly mean much to you, though you still don’t like looking at them. You bend over it anyway, looking it over. You spy something in the man’s pocket, and you slip it out.

“H-hey, what are you-?” Starts Kanji, but you cut him off.

“Looting a body. He’s not going to be using this anymore, is he? And look, I found us a map. You wave the piece of paper you had found in their faces. “It’s in pristine condition, too.”

The others look at you, seemingly shocked that you’re able to talk about this so... lackadaisically, you suppose.

Thinking about it, you probably looked pretty horrifying, just looting a dead body with no regard for the dead. “Sorry about that. Bodies don’t really bother me much anymore, I guess.” You shrug. “If any of you needs to go to the bathroom, feel free.”

You hold the map up to your face. It seems that the intersection your four were walking down led to the mess hall, which you had just visited, the armory, and the engine room, where mages kept a careful eye on the delicate fusion-powered engine the ship ran on.
***
A few minutes, some pointed questions about why exactly you weren’t bothered at dead bodies anymore, which you shrugged off, and a few exclamations of disgust later, the four of you were standing at the intersection again.

You had placed another invisibility ward over the body to make sure the three of you couldn’t be implicated. Sensing wards was a fairly high-leveled skill, after all, and the three of you could claim you didn’t know the body was there if someone found you.
Now, what to do…?

“We’ll split up this time.” You announce. “Kanji and I’ll head to the engine room. Danny, you and Katherine will head to the armory.”
The latter two mages stare at you, Katherine in shock and betrayal, and Danny in nervousness.
“W-what! Why do I have to go with him?” Hisses Kat. “I certainly do not want to go gallivanting with this lecher!”
“Y-yeah! I, uh, concur with that notion! Why do I have ta go with the psychobi-“ Danny cuts himself off. “Er, totally sane, beautiful woman who I would never, ever cross again?”
“Because I think this is a good time as any to settle your differences, so to speak. Kat, you can consider that a free pass to do whatever you like to him.” Kat perks up a little at that, though she still seems rather disgruntled. Danny, on the other hand, looks at you, panicked.
You’re pretty sure he mumbled something that sounded suspiciously like “Aw, crap,” under his breath.
After waving off the wind and fire mage, you and Kanji start running down the hall towards the engine room.
“Hey, uh, mind if I ask a question?” asks Kanji.
“You already did. Feel free to ask another one, though.”
“Why’re we heading to the engine room? Danny said the thief was looking for explosives, right? There should be a ton of those in the armory.”
You frown, conflicted. You should tell him, but considering the fact that he looked about ready to throw up earlier at the sight of the body, he probably won’t react well to the idea of trans-oceanic terrorism.
Well, you think, there’s no time like the present to learn about such things.
“I have a theory…” you begin.
(1/?)
>>
>>40587313

By the time you finish, Kanji is left speechless.

“T-they’re plannin’ on blowing up the ship? That’s nuts!”

“Quite. From what I know, the fusion reactor powering this ship has multiple cooling and energy transferring wards and glyphs that keep it running. The thing is, the whole thing’s delicate, and if someone manages to get in there and set off an explosion…”

“…We’re all dead as doornails.” Finishes Kanji. He shudders. “Geez, first you don’t react at a dead body, and now the first thing you think of when someone says ‘explosives’ is someone trying to crash an airship. What next? Flying the airship into a city?”

You shrug. “I’ve been taught to hope for the best, but expect, and plan for, the worst. That philosophy has served me pretty well these past few years. Anyway, we’re here.” You say, stopping.

Yep. A large steel door looms over both of you, covering the entire wall. A large sign, the first you’ve seen down here, simply reads:

WARNING: EMPLOYEES ONLY.

Unfortunately, it seems like someone didn’t heed that warning. A huge hole sits in the very middle of the door, the metal bending outwards, as if someone had simply punched through the wall.

“Welp,” you say, “seems like I was right. Draw your weapon, Kanji, we’re going in.” Kanji swallows, and looks at you, fear evident on his face.
Still, it seems that he found whatever he was looking for in your own features, since he nods his head once, and with noticeable effort, summons his aura.

“From the light of mine heart,” he chants, light gathering in his hands, “I draw thee. Caliburn!”

The light he gathered in his palms suddenly explodes outwards, lighting up every dark corner in the halls. It dazzles you for a moment, the pure light burning itself into your retinas.

When you can see clearly again, you’re staring at a sword. Not just any sword though. It’s a longsword, its blade glistening with power. In an instant, you know for a fact that this isn’t just any old mana construct- it’s an aura weapon, drawn from the very depths of his soul, and summoned thorugh a short chant.

“Uh. I-it’s not that impressive…” mumbles Kanji, scratching the back of his head, embarrassed. “I mean, all that I did was gather some aura and mumble a couple words, heh…”

“Are you kidding?” You ask, completely bewildered. “Being able to summon your aura weapon at your age should be practically impossible! How long have you been able to do this?”

“I, uh, I only figured out how to do this much about a year ago…”

“This much? You can do more? Actually, never mind. Let’s just get going before a madman blows us up. You can tell me about it later.” You cut him off.

Seriously, an aura weapon at his age? Sure, you can summon yours, but you’ve always thought about it as a special case, and you can barely even control its effects anyway, not to mention the fact that it has some destructive effects on you, too.

Kanji, though? Seems like he can use his just fine, without having to worry about collateral damage.

You wave over at him, beckoning him to follow as you stride through the engine room.
“Hey, what about you? Don’t you need a weapon?” he asks.

“Don’t worry about me. I can make mine damn quickly; I’d rather not have to spend any effort keeping it around without something to slash through.”

“O-oh.”

Almost immediately, you can feel feedback from the left path.

Two aura signatures are quickly being depleted, in short bursts. A duel. And from how it feels, they were both rather powerful.

Well. That wasn’t expected. Two terrorist groups, both of them trying to take out the other? Perhaps one of the staff members found someone suspicious and engaged them? You don’t know. Either way, the situation has escalated, and you’re unsure if it’s in a good way or a bad one.

You check up on Kat and Danny, just in case, primarily for the former’s sake. Thankfully, both of them seem fine, though there seems to be another aura signature close to them.

Dammit, you think. Three groups? You might have quite the mess to clean up later.

“Hey, man. You doin’ okay?” Asks Kanji, seemingly worried. “You zoned out for a sec there.”

“I’m fine. I was just checking up on the situation.” You answer. “And it’s not good.”

“N-Not good? Not good how?”

“As in, ‘we’re definitely going to get in at least one fight’ not good. Come on, we’re running out of time.”

Kanji, for his part, looks terrified at your statement, but he nods anyway. You can hear him mumbling ‘dammit’ over and over again, like a mantra.

As the two of you run over the leftmost path, you take a few moments to enjoy the ‘scenery,’ for lack of a better word.

Glyphs and wards plaster almost every single inch of every wall, huge circles full of runes each interconnected through lines of mana in a beautiful web that for all its complexity, does its job, and does it well.
If you had more time, you’d probably be perfectly willing to investigate the patterns and try to create something more efficient, but you’re wasting time as it is.

When you finally come to the beginning of a much larger hall, and judging by the signs plastered everywhere, the actual home of the fusion engine, you see the site of a battleground.

Bodies, bodies everywhere. Some of the bodies wear white lab coats similar to the first one you found, identifying them as the scientists and engineers keeping the ship running, while others are clothed in what appears to be standard-issue magically-resistant plate, identifying them as the various battlemages-for-hire that were probably assigned to protect the former.

Some are encased in ice, while others simply look like they’ve been shot through multiple times before finally bleeding out. A few seemingly exploded into a not-insignificant pile of blood and gore, as if they had been blasted with explosives at point-blank.

The loud BANG of gunfire interrupts your observations and your instincts scream out at you to MOVE.

You Reinforce your legs using the natural mana around you. Mana pumps through your blood and bone and muscle, and you run.

You clear the room in a second, jumping over the fusion reactor below. You turn back, your legs burning, and see a large crystal of ice shoot upwards from where you stood, jutting out like a spike.

Thank heavens you moved when you did- you might have been speared through otherwise.

Kanji, thankfully, appears to be decently trained and managed to dive out of the way, though now he’s on the other side of the room.

Caliburn continues to glow brightly in his hands as he holds it aloft. He doesn’t seem to be puking over the bodies either, which you are also thankful for.

“I do not know who you are,” Booms out a voice from above you, “but I believe you are an impediment to be removed. Leave, or I shall make you.” You look up, taking in the scene.

High above you, Kanji, and the reactor, two spikes of ice jut out from opposite walls, a figure standing on each. You can’t take a good look at either of them, but you imagine that one of them is the explosion-happy terrorist you’re looking for.

To your shock, one of them looks vaguely familiar- wait, is that the bluenette from the deck!?

Well, you can’t exactly get a good view of the situation from down here. After glancing at Kanji again to make sure he’s alright (he’s cautiously holding out Caliburn in front of his face, he’s probably fine), you bend your knees, Reinforcing your legs again.

At the same time, a large glyph spreads out underneath, created from the mana around you. It’s a glyph of your own design, made specifically for the purpose of travel.

You had named it a propulsion glyph, and at this point, you can cast it invisibly, silently, and through your legs, which is far more difficult than using your hands.
Not to mention the fact that using your hands for it probably wouldn’t work as well.

With a thought, you activate the glyph, using your Reinforced legs to jump.

In an instant, you are launched upwards, easily reaching the altitude of the two combatants. You allow most of your kinetic energy to bleed off into natural mana around you, and you slow to a stop in the air. A platform of mana forms under your feet, and you land on it easily.
You haven’t done something like that in quite some time. You should do it more often- adrenaline is a hell of a drug, and it keeps your mind off the steadily growing migraine.

As you land, you take a better look at the two combatants. It seems you were right- one of them most certainly was the bluenette from the deck. You wonder if she was down here the entire time.

(1/?)
>>
>>40589550
The first thing you notice about her is her height. Unlike Kanji, she’s short. Quite short. She stands a few inches shorter than you, even. You estimate that she probably only stands up to your shoulder.

Her light blue hair is also cut quite short, only sitting higher than shoulder-length. A dark blue hairband holds her hairstyle in place, though it seems as cosmetic as it is functional. She’s wearing a pair of thin, wire-rimmed glasses, colored black. They're askew, probably as a result of the battle.

Her clothes are simple and functional: a white dress shirt and a black, knee length skirt. She seems to be wearing a black cape of some sort.

She looks quite irate, but she seems surprised that you managed to get up here.

The other combatant, however, you can’t get a single read on. They’re wearing a long, flowing robe with a dark hood to cover their face. Their entire ensemble is black, though small clasps along the middle made of metal hold the thing together.

You speak up to answer her ealier question. “An ally? No. I’m here to crash this terrorist party. I assume you are as well?” You ask the bluenette.

She stiffens up. She eyes you carefully, measuring you up. A tense moment passes as she tries to decipher whether or not you’re sincere. Eventually, she ever so slightly relaxes. “I Suppose that’s one way of saying it, yes.”

“Right then. And you, friend? What might you be here for?” You ask the black-clothed figure. You discretely begin gathering natural mana around you, organizing it and forcing it to heel. The pounding in your head worsens.

The figure doesn’t answer. Another tense moment. The bluenette deigns to speak up.

“They have been completely silent the entire battle. I have reason to believe our opponent is mute. Am I correct?” Her voice is as dry as a desert.

In response, the figure reaches deep into its coat…

You leap through the air, dodging the crack of rifle fire, seeing another spire of ice jut out from where you stood. With a sweep of your arm, you counter, a swarm of mana arrows seeking your opponent.

The hooded figure twists, your arrows slipping up and around them. Fortunately, the bluenette is more than willing to pick up you slack, and with a twitch of her hand, a small revolver appears in her left hand.

CrackCrackCrack!

You hear three shots of gunfire, and you see three bursts of aura fire out from the barrel of the revolver. Gathering mana at your fingertips, you fire off your own volley of mana arrows, not willing to be outdone.

The projectiles all hit their mark, your arrows slamming straight into the figure and promptly dissipating without your will to command them. On the other hand, the bluenette’s blasts of aura leave a far more noticeable effect: one of the figure’s arm and their chest appear to be encased in ice.

The figure doesn’t seem to notice their injuries as it initiates evasive maneuvers. Exchanging its sniper rifle for a pair of submachine guns, it pulls both triggers, one of the weapons aimed at the ground, the other aimed at you and the bluenette.

The sound of gunfire begins to filter itself from your ears as you focus on the battle. Even the pounding in your head becomes nothing more than a nuisance.

”There is nothing but you and the enemy. Sharpen your mind and rein in your instincts. Now… go!”

(1/?)

The ambient mana around bends to your will, forming and sharpening themselves without even a gesture.

You fire constantly, each of the arrows a silent weapon. Few hit their mark, but at least you don’t have to aim with massed fire.

The bluenette appears to be doing fine. She jumps to and fro, aiming her revolver in front of her to shoot at a wall or a piece of machinery, forming platforms of ice for her to land on, returning fire to the opponent whenever she gets the chance.

The figure does something similar, though the SMG doesn’t need nearly as much aim or finesse to use. Firing at the wall or ground, the figure constantly forms solid mounds of ice all over the room as it sprays bullets everywhere in an attempt to hit. It never quite manages, though you admit that there were a few close calls. The frost on your shoulder can attest to that.

However, both you and the bluenette can tell that the strategy isn’t working. The figure doesn’t even seem winded; it’s still nimbly jumping from platform to platform. Your headache is starting to really annoy you, but you’re not all that worried; you’ve fought for longer than this.

The bluenette though? You can see the droplets of sweat on her forehead.
You can feel her glance at you. You meet her eyes, and she asks the unspoken question.
How do you answer?

Blue hair, anon. You see, people can have some really strange hair colors!
Strangely enough, in this uiverse, there are genes for just about every hair color in the rainbow!
Most people are still your standard redheads, blondes, and browns, though. And your own head of black hair.

You smirk and start approaching the figure. The girl begins backing off to take a breath, though she still watches you closely for an opening to fire.

With another burst of mana, you rush forward, another propulsion glyph forming under your feet.

”A saber, huh?”

You reach out, your fingers clasping around the familiar handle of your saber. Your free hand flings a few more mana arrows at the figure. Bringing both hands forward, you slash the air in front of you.

A blast of destructive mana emerges from the tip of your blade cutting through the bullets of ice. The arrows join it, harmlessly dissipating the bullets.

Hey, just ‘cause it’s not a katana doesn’t mean it’s not cool! I think sabers are awesome! You're just mad that your weapon’s so heavy, and not as cool.

The cloaked figure is unprepared for the attack. It barely manages to twist out of the way, landing on another platform of ice.

I can still beat your ass in a swordfight, brat! Don’t you forget that.

You expected that, though. Checkmate, you think, as your blade thrusts forward. This time, a sharp burst of mana emerges instead, far faster than before. The blast pierces through the figure’s abdomen before it can dodge, and the metallic tang of blood fills the air.

That’s just ‘cause you’re taller! I don’t have as much reach!

You smile in victory as the bluenette notices her chance. She lines up her shot, and…

Excuses, excuses! Want to prove it? That’s right, you can’t ‘cause you always lose. Sorry little bro.

CRACK

The figure’s abdomen becomes completely encrusted in ice. Notably, the ice isn’t clear anymore; it seems like you managed to freeze their blood.

Humph! You’re mean. You’d better make it up to me later.

The figure keels over. You and the bluenette both line up your finishing attacks. She turns the barrel on her revolver while you fold and condense the mana around you into a far denser form than the simple arrows from before.

Hahahaha! Fine, fine! I’ll get you an icepop later, okay? I’ll even get your favorite, blue raspberry.

Suddenly, the figure reaches back into its coat and brings out its own revolver, pointing it toward its head. With a flick of its fingers, it fires-

…Fine. I guess I can forgive you this time, bro. Just this once, though!

…And the figure is gone.

Well, I’ll end it here, for tonight.

I’ll stick around while I archive the thread and update the pastebin. Feel free to ask questions. Especially worldbuilding! I like worldbuilding.

Also, I want your guys’ opinion on something: Should I keep the current dice system, while tweaking it so that you need a 1/10 to crit fail/succeed respectively?
Should I try an entirely new system, and if so, do you have any suggestions?

Also, I want your opinions on the Quest as a whole. Do you like it so far? Anything I should try to change/improve? I know my updates are generally slow, so I apologize for that, at least.

I've enjoyed it so far, the slow updates might put off most others though.
I don't mind, personally.

Also fun world we're going into, like the info we have so far!

Oh and about the dice, maybe add in you need at least one '1' to critfail.
A simple stat/modifier/perk system would be cool too. Other than that it's okay.
>>
>>40590914
good questr, dice is okay but maybe add a condition for crits lile crit confirmation or something, also could be faster but its ok. see ya

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy it.
If I make a stat system, it'll be pretty simple.
I tend to prefer freeform, I'm not sure if you guys like that sorta thing, though.

I like it too, but power level and fluff/capabilities gotta be pretty well define in-setting. Maybe some focus on tactics is cool

Pastebin has been updated, and the thread archived! Good Night everyone!

Next thread will be Saturday at 3:00 PM Eastern, at the latest. I'll announce it on my twitter if I make it earlier!
