Your name is Adria. And currently, you are fighting all of your motherly instincts which are ordering you to sweep up the trembling little fox girl in front of you into a hug.

You, Sree, and the one rogue you took prisoner, are sitting near the bank of Tymera’s Blood (the river) and staring at the young fox girl in front of you with varying degrees of astonishment. You, and Sree as well ostensibly, are tired from taking out a camp of four outlaws.

You murdered four of them. More on that later perhaps but now you’re trying to stay focused at least until you finish up your scouting job of the river. Now, there’s still one last thing Sree saw further upstream that could bear investigating, but you could head back to Reiln after you’d rested a bit and get paid.

All of that is secondary of course, because right now there is a fox girl in front you, holding out what looks to be a rectangular box wrapped in a handkerchief. Now, while you’re sure the piece of cloth in question was (at one very distant point in its life) clean and colorful, right now it is neither. But it’s still a gift, and the fox girl is clearly putting a large amount of her self-worth
Into whether you accept her gift or not.

This isn’t really a choice. So, with a smile you reach out and take it. “Thank you.” You say slowly, and clearly. While you think you heard some River Tongue while she was stuttering out her message, you aren’t quite certain how well she speaks it.

“Would you like to sit down with us?” You reach into your food bag and pull out your rations. Some dried fish, some dried meat, a piece of bread, and of course… “We have some fried tofu.”

Sree takes a flying hop over to your side. When she lands the fox girl, torn between nodding and running away to hid again, startles.

“Stay yes?” Sree says before the other girl can so much as move. “Brought too much food, especially with this, see!” She taps the package gently with one talon.

“It’s food?” You ask, glancing to both the Monsters.

The fox girl nods, taking a moment to gather her thought. “Y-yes…” She murmurs quietly. “I-I made if for you… ah…”

You smile. “Thank you!” You take the handkerchief and untie it gently, revealing what looks to be a handmade wooden box within. Though battered, the box within shows signs of delicate care, the carvings on the surface detailed and beautiful. “We were just about to eat. Here, join us!” You pat the grass next to you.

“A-a-ano…”

“Sit.”

She sits. And you begin passing out the food. Sorry Sree, but looks like you’re stuck with the dried fish.

>Start eating first, let the fox girl get comfortable
>Make some conversation while you eat, get a name.
>Write in

Also, I told you the main loot you got from the outlaws last chapter, but there’s also weapons and some other basic supplies that you could have picked up in the meantime

>The two handed broadsword
>The bow and arrows
>The knives, or cloak
>Some furs
>Bed rolls

What, if any of the above equipment do you want to lay claim to?

Welcome to RE: Human quest!
In RE: Human quest, you play as Adria, the young adventurer who’s setting out to make her mark on the world.

Voting period is 10-15 minutes in length. Write ins are accepted but I reserve the right to veto any that I deem unfeasible. Dice are 1d100 and best of three, roll high with modifiers as I give them. I will ask for other dice as needed.

During Combat scenes I cut the voting period to about 7 minutes to keep the pace up. So far that hasn’t been a problem.

Answers to some questions from last thread:

General as in a leader of a group of various soldiers. One of the requirements for general is to lead a party of at least ten additional people into combat. Maybe more? Primarily, it would be a leadership job that helps you co-ordinate groups of people while you’re in the field yourself. Tactician mainly helps you make plans and execute maneuvers, so I’m still thinking about how to differentiate it from the would be General Job.

Like I said, I’m still not sure about General, there’s a lot of overlap with tactician, but since we won’t be unlocking General for a while anyway, I figure I have time to experiment.

Clerics, Clairvoyants (not sure if I should name them Oracles or Prophets instead), and Illusionists make good support mages. Something like Shiro from Log Horizon? Don’t really have a direct analog for a job like that yet. In the end I probably won’t as my system can’t function like an MMO.

Would using the broadsword limit our casting I'm assuming it wouldnt, you only really need two hands to swing, but it's your system.

Actually, monkey grip lets us use it one handed without any penalties

You may wield two handed weapons with one hand.

>>
>>40562571
I'm assuming in exchane for using one hand we do less damage than someone would with two hands? probably.
>>
>>40562600
depends on how argent does it. originally, monkey-grip had no penalties whatsoever
>>
>>40562621
That's insane, clearly the neverwinter creators watched a lot of anime.
>>
>>40562600
Here's how it works. Your sword does a base 1 damage. Two handed swords do a base 2. When wielding it with one hand, I roll to see if you get the extra damage or not.

You also don't get access to two hander skills, which you didn't see b/c you executed the guy before he could do anything last thread...

Anyway, calling it for the archer's stuff, looks like we have three votes for everything except the broadsword, which I'm assuming you guys want to hold onto anyway, if you decide to switch weapons. So I'm going with
>Take all of the loot.
As I should have originally I guess

Also

I may be wrong, it's been a LONG damn time since i played NWN2

After distributing the food and making sure the fox girl isn’t about to run away on you, you open the wooden box.

Inside is a small, but delicious and obviously handmade meal. The box itself has several small wooden partitions to separate the different types of food. Steamed rice, a few slices of seared fish, fresh vegetables and some fruit.

You glance over at the girl out of the corner of your eye. She’s enjoying the small squares of fried tofu one at a time, practically letting them melt in her mouth, with how slowly she’s eating them. You take in her dirty clothes, matted hair, and generally underfed appearance and contrast it with what must be a (at the very least) somewhat expensive meal in front of you.

You blink once, remembering the disturbance outside of the leather worker’s shop this morning, a man shouting about how someone stole his wallet. Did this girl pickpocket someone just so she could make you lunch?

You turn your attention back to the meal in front of you, noticing the carved pair of chopsticks that sit at the top. That’s the first time you’ve seen them in this life. Slowly you begin to eat, but before you can figure out a way to start the conversation, the rogue (sitting tied up by the fire) interrupts.

“Hey!” He calls “Care to share a bit of that food with a poor unfortunate soul?”

Suddenly, the fox girl’s head snaps up and she growls at him, eyes flashing. The young man just laughs. “Sorry, love. Didn’t mean to startle you.” She just continued to glare as you turn to look at the rogue.

You sigh, and quickly finish up the rest of your meal. The chopsticks were a bit hard at first, but your mind remembered how to use them even if your body didn’t.

“Quiet you!” You say to the bandit. Taking out a strip of dried meat you put it into his mouth and leave the eating part to him. “If you don’t quit antagonizing her I might stop being nice.”

He takes the meat between his teeth and gives you a rough approximation of a grin. “Muh- obiage, ove!” He shifts it some “I be goot now!” Before you can decide to kick him or not, he pivots around and puts his back to the rest of you, giving you some privacy.

How magnanimous.

With a roll of your eyes you turn your attention back to the fox, crouching down in front of her as she continues to glare at the man. “Hey.” You say gently, stroking her hair. “It’s okay, he’s not going to do anything. I promise.”

Her eyes flick from his back to your face a few times before the tension begins draining out of her body, as she leans into you hand a bit. She still looks wary though, not only of the rouge but also of you and Sree, so you sit back, letting her have some space.

“It’s nice to see you’re still doing okay.” You say, smiling gently. She glances at you in surprise. “I remembered, what did you think I’d forget you when you’ve been following me around every single day?” She blushes. “But anyway, last time you didn’t tell me your name.” You hold out your hand.

“My name is Adria, and this is Sree. It’s nice to meet you.” Sree nods happily, before returning to her dried fish.

“A-aah, W-watakshi wa-” She shakes her head once, slapping her cheeks, before reaching out to shake your hand. “I-I’m T-t-tamamo.”

You smile. “It’s nice to meet you Tamamo. So…” You pack up the box gently and re wrap it. “Did you come all the way out here to say hello?”

[1/2]
>>
>>40564080
She nods, trying to work up the courage to speak again. “I-I wanted to thank you.” She rubs her eye with one of her too long sleeves. “And g-give you the obento I made…” She looks up at you. “Did you like it?”

“Yes. It was delicious.” You say, leaning back on your palms. “It must have been very hard to make.”

“N-n-no! Not at all!” She replies, trying to hide a growing smile behind her hands. The blush she’s sporting looks almost bright enough to glow. “I-I’m happy you l-liked it!”

You smile, reaching out to ruffle her hair, this time she seems to melt into your hand. “Say Tamamo… do you have a place to stay?” You realize that this might be a bit of a touchy subject but you feel like you need to know.

She shakes her head sadly, focusing on the feeling of the hand on her ears. You nod once. “So…” Best just to be blunt. “Would you like to stay with me?”

She freezes, and for a moment you think you crossed some sort of line. Then she glances away, cheeks radiant, blushing gently. You wonder if she fantasized about this moment to herself, when she was sleeping on the streets (or wherever she stays) keeping herself warm with dreams she didn’t think would ever come true.

You hope you’re living up to her expectations.

[2/3]
>>
>>40564103
Reaching out. You pull her into your lap, “Hey.” You whisper, still running your hand over her ears. “It’s okay. You don’t have to pretend everything’s okay anymore. We’ll look out for you.”

Sree hops up onto your vest. “Nothing to worry about yes?” She chirps, doing her bet to wrap her wings around both of you. “Will be good friends!” Sometimes it’s nice that Sree is such a happy person.

Tamamo nods, slowly sinking into your embrace as the tears start to come. You stay there, rocking her and humming gently as she gets it all out of her system. Even the Rogue has sense enough to be quiet.

“C’mon” You say, once she seems to get a hold of herself. “Let’s head back to Reiln for a bet, get you some better clothes, okay?” She nods and you stand up. Shifting her around so that she’s holding onto your back.

Tamamo promptly wraps her arms around your shoulders and snuggles into you, which can’t be too comfortable, what with your metal cuirass and all, but she’s not complaining. Sree jumps off your shoulder and starts flying in a lazy circle above you. Unfortunately, you do have to pause to gather up all of the stuff you’ve decided on taking, which is… pretty much all of it. Luckily for you, you have a handy little prisoner to carry your loot back to town.

“On your feet.” You command. Dropping the wrapped up bundle of furs and bedrolls at his feet. “We’re heading back to town.” For this part, you have your sword in hand, just in case he wants to try something funny.

“Ah…” He gets up slowly, “Yes, Reiln… Listen.” He gives you a sheepish smile. “You and I both know there’s no real reason to turn me in to the guards right? It’ll just be a big hassle for both of us! So how about this, I’ll teach about whatever you want to know, and you let me go without a problem.” He places a fist on his chest. “On my honor that you’ll never even see me again.”

You cock and eyebrow. “Oh? I’m not that interested in learning how to pickpockets.”
>>
>>40564505
He shakes his head with a grin. “See that’s just the thing. I’m not really a thief. Well-” He shrugs. “Not just a thief anyway. I’m more of a drifter, you know? Pick up whatever knowledge I can and fall in with whichever bunch of people is recruiting…”

You motion for him to continue.

“Right. So I know a decent bit about alchemy, appraisal, tailoring, survival, and a whole other host of things! I’m a very useful person to have around you know. So, I’ll give you my knowledge, and in return you won’t turn me in! I’ll even carry the bag until we’re just out of sight from the gates.”

You roll your eyes. “How about no.” Then, before he can so much as protest, you’ve slung the bundle of stuff over his shoulder and you’re marching him back towards the city. “Now be quiet and don’t drop my loot.” Tamamo giggles and the man lets out a much put upon sigh.

“As you wish love.” He does keep up a good pace though, so you keep from prodding him too much in the back with your sword. He seems mightily calm for someone who’s going to be turned over to the mermaids, perhaps he doesn’t know what their punishment is for ‘violating’ their river.

You hold back a shiver.

Anyway, in good time you make it to the gate and hand off the prisoner to the guards. They eye the fox girl, but don’t comment on her presence “Have a map as well?” One of them asks. You shake your head.

“Not finished yet, there’s one last thing we need to check out right be the crest.” You reply.

“Going for the full amount of money eh?”

“You know it.”

After you get to your house, you deposit the furs and the bedrolls (which need curing and washing respectively) at the edge of the training yard in the back. The yard is a small affair where your mom teaches younger men and women to defend themselves. All in all, she probably makes more than you could manage in a week.

Anyway, after that you take a look at the weapons. The daggers are in surprisingly good shape, but they’re nothing special. The bow is good, but the arrows sub quality.

The broadsword on the other hand, is very well maintained, as evidenced by the amount of time its previous owner was spending on it. Sree is poking the pile of furs with one claw, as if trying to discern what they would be used for.
>>
>>40565225

I was thinking.

What if we use the furs to make leather for some light sturdy armour for Sree. I believe she could make use of it. And use the daggers to make some sort of katars for her to use. Claws are great and all but sometimes you need weapons to fighting something you won't want to touch with your hands.

Cloak and bow should go to our little Tamamo as well.

Still writing, it's a big post.

I'm actually gonna call it a night after this. But I'm planning to run again tomorrow, for longer than usual.

You decide that, you not being a nose dead, Tamamo must be bathed. She stinks to high heaven, and even though she’s adorable, you really can’t abide by her walking around in her own filth. Because not only does it smell bad, it’s unhygienic.

Slowly, so as not to startle her (because if she is anything like any of your children, she hates baths) you begin making the necessary preparations. “Tamamo?” You ask gently, to distract her as you roll a large wooden tub into the yard. “Do you know how to use any weapons?”

As you lead her back into the house you motion for Sree to start filling it. Tamamo, on the other hand, shakes her head. “N-not really…” She murmers. Then, realizing that she may have just admitted to uselessness, she adds. “k-kedo, I’m a really fast learner!”

“That’s fine.” You say with a smile. “We can figure something out later for weapons, for the meantime, let’s get you out of those dirty clothes okay?” She nods, somewhat warily until you pull out a clean long shirt out of your cupboard. Then she takes off her rags and you slide it over her head.

“Here.” You cut a hole in the back so her two tails can fit out. “So what are you good at darling?” You ask, as you help her get her arms through the sleeves.

She looks down, bashful. “’M good at hiding.” You chuckle, ruffling your hair.

“That you are.” You say, picking her up as you head back out to the yard. So she’s really good at sneaking, and you’ll probably have to teach her how to fight if you want to keep her with you. Still that’s nothing new. The bow and the daggers are both the right size for her right now (though the bow will be longbow sized for her).

“So Tamamo.” You say, entering the yard. As she casts her eyes around the land on the tub. Sree is already in the water, fluffing up her feathers as she happily splashes water about. Tamamo’s eyes widen slightly, and she tries to struggle out of your grasp. “When was the last time you had a bath?”

“Nnnoooooo!” She tries to escape, but it’s far too late for that.

You dunk her in the tub.

She quiets down as you begin to wash her off. She even lets you take off the shirt so you can work some soap (and the rough equivalent of shampoo) into her hair. You take special care to clean her tails which Tamamo seems to like.

Sree is done first, and she shakes out her feather in the way that birds to, getting water all over you, which prompts you to splash her back. She squawks once and you laugh. After you’re finished washing Tamamo you pull her out of the tub and help her dry off.

“There we go.” You say. “Do you want me to brush your fur?”

She pauses, looking down at the ground. Then she nods.

You take Sree and her back in side and grab a comb. Sree hops up next to Tamamo on the bed, looking up at you with her big golden eyes. You let out a much put upon sigh. “I’ll brush your hair too greedy bird.” She grins.

You start by brushing out Tamamo’s tangles. And gods above her hair is a right mess. It’s only from your past experience of brushing out your daughters’ hair (many of whom were tom boys) that lets you get through it with the minimum amount of pain.

Once you get past the painful part. She calms down, and gets seems to melt into your chest. You pet her ears some before brushing Sree’s hair. After the harpy is well taken care of you turn your attention to the crux of matter. Tamamo’s tails.

This is new territory for you, but you can’t help but feel… calm? No fulfilled… as you sit there running the brush through Tamamo’s tails. The look in her eyes as she gazes up at you is one you’ve only seen in your own daughter’s eyes.

Emily… You remember how she ran away from home once and got lost before she could find her way home. You tore the city apart looking for her, finally finding her, cold, tired, and teary eyed, on the side of the road.

She had this sort of look in her eyes right then. Worshipful.

Just like earlier this morning. You hope you can live up to her expectations.
