Your name is Thomas Cairn, and you have no clue what you jumped into. Your dad was an infamous superhero known as The Red Rider, and he showed up dead in an alley about three months ago. When you were checking out a storage unit you inherited from him, everything changed. You gained his powers, a brain able to calculate faster than light, and an uncanny affinity for machinery.

Using your powers, you were easily able to get into the world's top engineering college, Central Cosmopolis Institute. But just as you were ready to leave everything behind in your hometown, Comet City, and move on, one of your dad's "co-workers", John Salvos, stopped by. He had an envelope from your dad, inside was the key to a safehouse in Cosmopolis, and a letter from The Red Rider.

The letter told you many things, including the existence of the murderer, Menace, a supervillain with unknown abilities. It also led you to your dad's lab/safehouse, where you passed copies of his notes on Menace to Mr. Salvos, AKA Swordsman. You then proceeded to almost nuke the city, but in the process kind of invented cold fusion. The product of this failure is an apparently limitless supply of clean energy, but that can be dangerous if in the wrong hands, so you called in some help.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN INFINITE POWER SOURCE?!" Wrench seems to be taking this the hardest, being wrong does that. Oh boy, now the voice in your head is an asshole.

"He means that it produces power infinitely." Lady Liberty seems mostly unsurprised, she probably deals with this more often.

"Let's start from the begining, can you do that Tom?" Mr. Salvos, well, Swordsman you guess, seems to be the only one taking this seriously

Well, time to start from the begining, but what should you leave out? Probably almost nuking the city, since that seems kind of bad, but they know who you are, maybe they should take off their masks and such. You can't really trust them right now, one of them may even be Menace. You've been thinking about him, and it seems more likely that he's a psychic, considering-

"Oh no, he's doing that thing Wrench does."

"Must be contagious."

"Oh fuck you guys."

"So, starting at the beginning, I was building a prototypical Potential Generator, this device right here, and I made a mistake. The thing imploded and, excluding the complicated theoretical stuff, I accidentally invented cold fusion. The product of this failure was a new element, Cairnsium is what I call it, that is extremely dense, produces three times as much power as Hoover Dam, and it is also completely stable. I checked it and ran some tests, it releases no significant radiation, and is non-fissionable, but I fear it could be used to power a "DoomsDay Device" or something, and I wanted your opinions on what to do." Well that was a mouthful.

"So, keep in mind that this is free clean energy, should I sell it or not?" You think that you made the point clear.

"Well... I won't even pretend that I've encountered anything like this before, but I think that the benefits to Humanity outweigh the risks, I mean, it's less dangerous than a nuke." Swordsman seems to be in favor of selling it.

"I think that if a villain wanted to hurt more people, he would break into a nuclear reactor, and this is much safer than that." Lady Liberty seems to be agreeing too.

"Dude, you made an infinite power source, think of the kids in Africa or whatever." And Wrench seems to be onboard.

"So... the consensus is that this is less harmful than nuclear power, and that means something." They all nod, must not be the first time they had to stop a villain from messing with nuclear stuff.

"Lady Liberty, can I get yo numbah?" You say with a grin. Wrench is laughing in a way that makes you uncomfortable.

"Sure, here it is." She actually handed you a business card, for her, well then, professional it is.

"RON bring out the milkshakes, an agreement was reached." You set up RON to run your Micro-Actuators as waiters, gotta impress the Supers somehow.

"DUDE, that's fucking sweet, how did you make these?" Wrench has wandered right into your trap, all according to keikaku (Mental note: Keikaku means plan). What the fuck was that?

"Not being an amateur, like that gas generator on Swordsman's back, why not just strap some car batteries to him while you're at it."

"Well, those were in the original design but-"

"No, stop, look at this." You flick on the PG and it makes not a single noise, the meter goes up to 2000 Megawatts.

"Uh, how-"

"Wrench, I'm not an amateur, I don't make inventions, I make history." Goddamn, when did you become so cool. Must be riding the success from yesterday.

"RON, set up a patent for the Cairnsium at utility priority, time to drag this world into the 21st century."

"Yes, Sir."

"Uh, Tom, your dad was notorious for not designing things, he only spent his time adding onto that bike of his, those designs weren't his..." Swordsman say what?! What the fuck again.

"Oh... well then... what would you recommend for protection on the Cairnsium?"

"Probably safe where it is. Red was always really good at security." Lady Liberty is also eager to get off that subject.

"Well, I have been working on this sweet armor that deflects bullets away from vital areas, and I can't help but notice that only one of you has armor. And I've been working on these amazing processors, I could upgrade some stuff." Time to bait the trap, wait how do you know about this kind of thing anyway? Well whatever, you do.

"I'd pay you for it, no need to only do charity." Mr. Salvos seems to be getting a little wary of all your help.

You find a few references to the hard drive in the data banks, but all signs point to it being in the storage unit in Comet City, not here. Makes sense considering that he lived there, but if he didn't make those designs, who did? And why didn't he make those designs? You remember that Legacies normally develop different powers than their parents, maybe that's your change, you can design stuff well. But then where did he get those designs?! Maybe he stole them, that would explain it, stolen from a Supervillain or something.

"RON, get started on two suits of Nano-Armor. Have it done by Monday."

"Yes Sir."

Well, that was a bust, you spent two hours searching to find that the hard drive is probably in Comet City, maybe you could get it over Christmas Break, you're going to Grandpa's mansion, and that's just right outside the city. Anyway, thoughts for a later date.

>Idea get, Stun Beams

Might as well work on making more Cairnsium, you bring up a bunch of notes about Theoretical Physics up on the board to make the whole thing easier on you, and get started. The music from when you fixed the equation at school, but instead of the staccato blasts of a trumpet, it is a canon that builds from a single bass drum to a hymnal choir of sense. You barely even started the program before the song is finished and the equation for the synthesis is on paper. It has the feel of a composer reading their work, and now it's time to play the piece. You steel yourself to bring this machine into creation and begin.

By the time you finish, the doorbell rings and you answer the door, sweaty and covered in grime from the work. You take the small pizza RON ordered and pay the deliveryman then head inside. It was dark outside, but whatever, genius has no curfew, anymore at least. You noticed something while observing the Cairnsium core, the electricity isn't ionizing the air, or even heating it up! You file that away, considering a possible use for later, and start up the large, cylindrical machine. It whirs for a bit before producing a small k'chunk noise. Out of a slot rolls a cylinder of orange, glowing Cairnsium. You put it in the scanner with tongs and it registers as Cairnsium, all the way down to the atom. You've done it.

You sign the patent form for RON, then you change into some pajamas in the back, they have a monogrammed RR on them in red. Gee, who could they have belonged to, guess this is where Dad went on his business trips. There's even a couch in the back, this place has the feel of an apartment even with all the high tech stuff up front. You go back and get cleaned up to go to bed and sleep takes you like, nope, not gonna finish that saying.

You get a good night's sleep and wake up at 8, a little bit later than you normally get up, and get changed into some spare clothes you always keep in your backpack. You had a bad time in Middle School, so that's still a habit. You are all cleaned up and ready for the day.

"Sir, the Nano-Armor is 40% complete, it will be done by tonight. Your holdings in the stock market took a massive climb yesterday, they are now being distributed to avoid suspicion of fixing it, and your investment now sits at $10,000."

"Good job RON, how long until I'm a millionaire?"

"About 1.4 years at this rate sir, but that is only including stocks."

"RON I was joking, but wow."

Your company has been doing extremely well, well, not really a company if there's on employee, but you're doing well. The investments have payed off, as well as selling the Micro-Actuators and Potential Generators. You sell mostly to private owners, but tech companies are catching up about it. Too bad they can't take the designs, PATENTS!

You also decided to research some cool things, you had a lot of ideas going on. The Red Knight suit got done quite a bit ago and you were running support for Wrench up until that point. When you finished it, he decided it was time for field training, so you suited up and went out, it worked like a dream, the suit augmenting your strikes and protecting you from bullets, it felt good. You found out that you were getting a bit carried away, so you started doing more yoga to keep yourself in control.

School went well, you aced all your classes. Mr. Armstrong said that he liked the cake you made, even Jack made an okay one. Ms. Debarr was terrible all semester, but you beat her, so you got an A. Now you just have to go to Comet City to meet up with Mom, get that hard drive, and drive to Grandpa's.

You say goodbye to Harry, he's going to the Bahamas with his family, you wish you could go. He's also taking Monica with him, and that gives you an idea. You go out to find Jeana, she was in her room, your relationship is getting pretty serious, so it's about time you do stuff like this.

"Hey Jeana, you want to go to Comet City with me? I'm having Christmas with my Mom and Grandpa, and since you aren't going anywhere, I thought you might want to come." Jeana had a lot of siblings and she was all but kicked out when she got accepted to CCU, you get the feeling it wasn't a very happy place anyways.

"Sure, I was just going to do some studying while everyone was gone, I almost bombed that Chem. test. I'll pack my stuff, do they know about this?"

"Yeah, I told Mom I had a pretty girlfriend who was a homemaker." Ha, Architect joke.

"Very funny, I'll meet you out front in a bit." She closes the door and you swear you hear her running around her room, must be in a hurry.

You pull out your phone. "RON, notify the Supers that I'm going out of town, then activate the security for the lab. Tell me if there is a problem. Merry Christmas RON."

"Merry Christmas Sir"

First you call Mom, you know she will want to know about the surprise guest.

"Sure honey, she can come, we have plenty of room at the table!" She seems pleasantly surprised.

"See you then Mom, love you."

"Love you too."

That always makes you feel better after a long day working on projects, but you need to take care of other stuff too.

You get the entire Super crew in a group call.

"Hey guys, just going out of town, RON should have sent you a message, but I felt like telling you myself. Can you keep an eye on my lab while I'm gone? Security's up so don't enter, but just make sure no stupid gangster gets vaporized trying to break in."

"Sure Tom, it's the least we could do." Mr. Salvos seems to speak for the group.

"One last thing before I go, Wrench, don't touch ANYTHING that my hands assembled or designed that I didn't give to you. Merry Christmas!"

"Merry Christmas you cheating piece of shit." He's just mad you beat him last time you played.

Jeana walks out the front door in a sweater and jeans, thank god she doesn't wear Uggs, those make the designer in you cry. "Ready to go?"

You spend the first part of the drive listening to music as you leave the city limits. Then you turn up the volume and start singing, all that time in the shop you would hum songs to keep calm, so you became pretty good at carrying a tune. She joins in with a soprano lilt, a perfect harmony with the tenor tone of your singing. You keep singing for quite a while, until it gets to sunset, and then you decide to talk.

"So, want to play a car game?"

"Sure what is it?"

"Well, I ask you a question, and then you ask me a question."

"Sounds fun, shoot."

"Am I your first boyfriend?" Pretty safe question.

"No. Am I your first girlfriend."

You groan. "Yes. How was life before college?" You should at least know that about her."

"My Dad sucked, he was a drunken asshole and my siblings hated me because I made them look bad. How was your family life before college."

Well, that wasn't a pleasant answer." My Dad was an accountant and my Mom stayed at home. Two months before I left for college my dad was found dead in an alley." Well, your answer wasn't much better.

"I'm sorry."

"It's fine, I took it in stride. I still miss him though. Try not to bring it up in front of Mom. Okay?"

"Sure. Well, you suck at car games, that wasn't fun at all."

You share a laugh as the sun sets.

New Developments:

>Stun Beams: Using metered Cairnsium energy releases, produces a "Taser Laser"

Tech points can only be spent on unresearched tech.

It's the same perk, but you can take it again.

Self Improvement is +5 to a kind of roll, if we get it twice that's a plus 10.
It can be very much worth it if we run out of things that we can safely take or if we simply decide to increase a stat we're lagging or will need sorely.

Guys this quest gets so many unique posters, why don't some upvote it in the archives?

It helps to not have it taken down in case of cleanups iirc

Bio actuators and We have to go smaller, being the ideal ones here.

Remove the psionic nullifying waves then.

Lost is there going to be a perk or something techy to trade three or more tech points for a plot point?

Im with you, unless we get something more useful.
I am for increasing knowledge, should help with most of our lab experiments, and creations.
>>
>>40543393
No. Don't have a way to justify that. Use tech to achieve goals
>>
>>40543416
well since we got that new mediation perk One with everything if we up guts then we can stop a break down
>>
>>40543436
Ehh was just a question. Plot stuff is pretty op
>>
>>40543436
Could we ever use a Plot Point to increase the margin of critical successes/reduce critfails?
>>
Let's do a double tech point for the actuators. Make them 1mm long and still have a force of lime 1 pound each.
>>
>>40543488
Once we have the bio actuators and smaller.
That seems to go well with each other. I want Ron to run the tests, and seeking to actively improve it. Before we test the bio actuators.
>>
if we keep upping our jetpack then we could integrate it into the feet of our suit like the Ironman suit

Jesus Christ that was a long tally.

>You can fit one technology into each slot onto the armor.

>Head[Psionic Nullifying Waves is the only option right now]

>Body[Nano-armor or Jetpack]

>Arms[Plasma Blades or Jetpack Punch]

>Legs[Jetpack is only option, still need body pack to do more than slow falling]

>Power[Cairnsium Core]

Choose an option for each one that has options.

duh

again duh

Need something anti-armor already

We - can - increase slots of parts later right?
I figure we might need to buy miniaturization or something with tech points
fuck this reminds me of Gal Civ
>>
>>40543723
Yes, it will be up next thread, as well as a bunch of other stuff.
>>
>>40543736
Cool, thanks.
Oh just one more thing, the armour does have protection and servos/synthetic muscles, right?
Can't have power armour without armour or power.

How strong are we in armour? 1 ton lift? Peak human? Regular strength? (all counting the armour's own weight already ofc)
>>
>>40543761
Yes, one ton lift at max. This can all be improved.

Votes done, tallying.

Can we drop our crit on the Bio-Actuators so they aren't as dangerous to implement?
>>
>>40543940
That would only apply to the actuators you make, since RON doesn't have to roll. There will be tech down the road to make it implement.
>>
>>40543990
