Your name is Shane Morris. You are a wizard.

In the past two months you have come to a school for wizards, learned a bunch of spells, pissed off a bunch of well to do elitists, stormed a dungeon, foiled a cult, possibly got signed up to join a secret society, gotten your headmaster fired, and saved a girl's life.

Granted its all well and good to say it like that but in reality you feel maybe a bit overwhelmed with it all. And even more so now that the girl is standing in front of you, with her arm still in a sling, and looking quite a bit more calm about the whole thing than you do.

“Where's Shane Morris” Jenny Black asks.

Well-connected is a good perk (basically +2 int for the purposes of studying) that fits our character well now that we're actually well-connected.

“Here.” You say putting up your hand.

She jogs over to you and gives you a sort of ginger half hug with her good arm.

“Thank you. I don't even want to know what would have happened otherwise.”

“I had help.”

“You wouldn't know it from all the stories going around.”

“Do you know anything else?”

She suddenly looks more serious. Not entirely, it seems like her mouth might just be curved in a perpetual shit eating grin, but more serious.

“Not that I can tell you in the commonroom. Do you have anywhere we can meet?”

If that is a safe area to go to then it would be a nice temporary meeting spot for us. If we get the chance to really and truly explore the castle finding our own spot would be awesome. Honestly Hogwarts is one of my favorite places in the universe just because of how really magical it ended up feeling.

>mfw Power and Int serve the exact same mechanical purpose in combative spellcasting (Power + Int + contextually relevant skills = total roll) and Power determines total health as well, giving additional injuries on a discrete per-point basis
>mfw spending money up to the cap mimics the studying bonus from Int, but nothing simulates an increased wound tolerance

MUSCLE WIZARD is not only a viable build in this system, it's arguably the best build the system allows for in a combat-heavy game, especially in the first several years.

“Yeah, tomorrow though. I don't want to get caught out after dark not saving someone's life.”

The next morning you go down the breakfast first thing. You plan to eat then take Jenny and maybe Alex and some others to the old room and see what you can piece together.

When Dorner and Yates start over toward the table you start to think your morning might not go as planned.

“You think this is cute mud?” Yates asks throwing a newspaper at you.

“Look, I've never even seen that.”

“Doesn't matter.” Says Dorner. “Makes us look bad when even the Prophet is spouting this crap.”

“Listen mud.” Yates says. “You're new so you don't understand. Things don't change here. Purebloods keep all the power and you muds keep your heads down and thank us for having the good graces to let you stick around. Got it? If we hear you spouting anymore of this equality shit we're gonna lynch you. And you'll be lucky if its us and not someone scarier. For a 'claw you're really dumb you know that?”

With that the two storm off. You pull the paper up and start to read.

When he awoke in his hospital bed nearly a week after the incident at Hogwarts, this reporter had the pleasure to interview Shane Morris.

He told the story of how he and three other boys made a journey into the depths of the castle in the dead of night and saved a young girl from a dark spell.

An almost fairy tale story. And yet as I spoke to the young man I got the sense that he didn't do it for any kind of fame. He was not friends with the girl, indeed Ms. Black it could hardly be imagined would be allowed by her peers to be seen with the muggleborn Mr. Morris. It seemed to me that it never occurred to his not to save her.

As I asked him how he felt that night his frequent answer was 'scared' but more often than not when he elaborated he noted that the fear was from the possibility that he might be too late, not any of the repercussions that his excursion might have for himself.

At once, he seemed completely ignorant (as many young muggleborns are) of the type of divisiveness that is bred by our culture, and completely in touch with what some may call common human decency, but which many supremacists might call degeneracy.

When we spoke I think he was under pressure. From the government, from his (recently retired) headmaster, and from his peers, to say a million different things and hide a thousand more. So while the act that he was made famous for may have been bold, I believe that in that small hospital bed he did something far more brave. He told the truth.
>>
>>40525208

Wow, an decent human being as a reporter. I've spoken with several over the years and generally the ones you need to watch out for more are the ones you're friends with. If I ever had a reporter actually say something genuine without twisting my words they'd be my bro.
>>
You sit back from the table. All around the hall people are starting to look your way. Some look happy, a lot of them confused, but then there are the ones like Dorner and Yates, angry at you.

Maybe you should have given the reporter something else to latch on to. As it was it seems like he just wanted to paint you as some kind of martyr for a cause that you don't really even understand.

You're not even sure how you should react to this.

>Own up to it. You told the headmaster things need to change, and they do.

Wow so straight up Jim Crow levels racism happening here, question, are lynchings a legitimate thing that occurs?

Also with all this and coming from Muggle society I would imagine we would first off be very confused about the issue and then quickly upset.

As a Ravenclaw this means doing research on the issue, anything we can get our hands on

Not usually lynchings though they do happen. Lots of deaths though, especially for a population of under 20,000 which is about where wizards stand to the best of my knowledge.

Killing goes both ways too, the muggleborns aren't from a society where they grew up under that kind of treatment usually so they snap and kill a lot of purebloods. Laws are strange, arcane, and ancient, just like the wizarding world, so justice isn't really common in the platonic sense.
>>
You're going to own this. Things are going to change even if people don't want them to.

The pureblood butthurt is still fresh, don't want to wander alone, need to take at least 1. At worst they can wait outside while we talk to Jenny if she's gonna be all super secret.
>>
>>40525577
>>Bring Alex,Linus, and/or Sam

Definitely no wandering alone for a little while, especially if we are rocking the boat. Also need a study session to brush up on wizarding laws as well as an literature regarding purebloods and mudbloods, even knowing the propaganda will help us on this quest
>>
Yaaaaa let's not go alone.
>>
You decide in the end to round up the gang and head to the old room, grabbing Jenny along the way.

Once you are all inside and the entrance is sealed back up you turn to her.

“Okay, what do you know?”

“I don't really feel comfortable telling you everything but... They're a convention of dark wizards in training. Its like warm up for when they grow up into one of the big families. I got an invitation when I showed up, because I'm a Black but when I started hanging out with the other Ravenclaw girls they retracted it. One night while I was going to do some extra work in the dungeons they kidnapped me. At first they had me awake all the time, then they started the fire. It puts you out so you don't feel it.”

“What does the fire do?”

“They called it a Soul Flame. I guess its bad news cause no one even wanted to be in the same room when they did it.” She clutches at her bad arm.

“How bad is it?”

“I'll be lucky to ever use it again. My parents are looking into some of the best medical wizards in the world, but it doesn't look good. Best bet is that I get it magically animated or something.”

“Why you?”

“Well... I don't think I'm ready to talk about that.”

Could the reason help us ascertain who is likely to be another victim? We saved you but the perpetrators are still on the loose and I doubt they're going to stop.

Would anyone else support us interrogating the paintings to find a new secret base known only to us? it would greatly help with our current situation to have someplace no one is listening in on.

“Could anyone else be in danger for the same reason? They're still out there.”

“They only wanted to use that specific trick on me. They'll probably start in on the muds soon, but in a more mundane sort of way. No fire at least. But they are still gonna be after me, for however long it takes.”

“Have you told anyone else this stuff? Maybe tried to get some help.”

“Anyone who needs to know, already does. Everyone important in the wizarding world for hundreds of years was in on this. No one who can help is going to.”

"I'll help. I won't drag you guys in further if you don't want to."

I almost want to say "This is BRITAIN, not Africa or the Mid-East where this kind of thing still happens."
>>
>>40526806
actually this sounds pretty IC for us. We've never really seen institutionalized racism before.
>>
“We'll help you.” The others give a nod of affirmation.

She laughs in a way that alarms you. Like she got hit by some kind of maniacal laughter hex. “You did well once. And I'm not complaining. But this is huge. Hedge your bets and keep your head down mud. I'm in real danger.”

“This is Britain. Not South Africa! How is this okay? Why is there so much hatred here?”

“Because a thousand years ago the people who made the laws were full of hate, and their laws are immutable thanks to magic.” Linus says with a resigned shrug.

“Can't magic change the law?”

“Yeah, but everyone who gets to be in charge wants things to stay the same.”

“Are you telling me you haven't had a rebellion in a thousand years?”

“Who's gonna rebel against a bunch of really old and powerful wizards?”

“Argh.” You give up and sit down. “I don't care. That's a lie. I do, but I hate this.”

“Give it time.” Alex says.

“Another thousand years you mean?”

Alex just stammers.

“Why are they after you Jenny? What did you do?”

She looks the closest to sad you've seen her. “I was born.”
