You are Urist Twelfthbay, and you are the moe personification of Dwarf Fortress, which makes you a short, sturdy creature fond of drink and industry-

- that's what you thought until just recently. Turns out the truth is a lot more complicated than that. Being Dwarf Fortress means that you're not just one dwarf: you are /every/ short, sturdy creature fond of drink and industry, along with all those annoyingly ruthless elven protectors of nature and humans prone to great ambition and goblins driven to cruelty by their evil nature.

On top of that, the blood of every fortress (OH so much blood) runs through your veins. You've got a good deal more power in you than you were led to believe, mostly blocked off by whatever's wrong with your brain. You solved this by going into your dreamscape and beating the shit out of the voices in your head, whereupon you created an entire fucking island realm by drudging dirt up out of the ocean.

And all you had to do was try and sleep through a terminal fall to get all this through your thick skull! It's almost enough to make you want to fall off cliffs more often, except you know better than to push your luck: losing is fun, but you'd rather it not be in an anticlimactic manner.

So anyway, you've got some bigger problems to face, like the fact that you made a shotgun-wielding farmer homicidally enraged over how you accidentally ruined her livelihood over a series of poor life choices. It says a lot about your life that you consider that to be a /minor/ issue, compared to whatever else's going on right now.

CPU Green Heart, aka Vert, aka the divine representative of all things XBox-related- or someone who looks like her- is trying to seal Leanbox behind some sort of impenetrable barrier, which is one step past disabling all communications in and out of the island nation.

You REALLY don't want to get stuck outside of Leanbox, since most of your friends are either stuck in captivity or trying to stop the world from going to hell. On the other hand, you /just/ got yourself a fortress after years and years of pining and sating all your fortress-related needs by building depressing little pillow and/or snow forts, so you're not that willing to run into Leanbox and leave your newborn island nation to wither on the vine...

So that's why you're currently digging a tunnel a few miles beneath the earth, both to get /under/ that barrier and to link Leanbox right back to your fortress island. See, the best of both worlds!

You're mildly surprised that Rokko voiced no objections to this plan. Then again, she hasn't really objected to any of your PREVIOUS plans, most of which ended in failure. Seems the Blue Bomber's the type to just go with the flow. And on the opposite end of the spectrum-

"Hah! There!"

Shovel Knight stabs the business end of her trademark weapon into the otherwise featureless boulder in front of her- you clap your hands over your ears as the subsequent chain reaction detonates a few hundred feet of rock and stone, completely failing to bury you all in a cave-in and successfully clearing out a perfectly passable tunnel. You're used to it by now, so you simply form your liquid metal gauntlets back into a pickaxe and rejoin Shovel Knight in driving through the earth. Rokko hangs back, conserving her power- you've been swapping shifts with her, and her Drill Bombs have helped pick up the pace when either you or Shovel Knight needs to take a break.

You're not sure what to make of your new ally; back at the Fighting Frog, she'd accepted your invitation to join your party with surprising ease, and all you'd had to do was mention that you were journeying to Leanbox to fulfill a promise and check up on your friends, one of which might be held against her will-

"A quest, you say?" she'd asked back then. "To free your friend from captivity?"

Well, not quite from /captivity/, but you don't know what the hell's going on over there-

"Then you have my shovel!" Shovel Knight had cheered. "How could I ever turn down such a call for help? If I did, I would not be half the knight I was!"

But we can't promise any sort of goddamn compensation for possibly diving headfirst into a motherfucking war zone-!

"I have no need for compensation," she'd replied, and you had cursed her for a fool (Ai Masushita did as well, but she'd done it with a smile on her face. As expected of idols).

Now that you're watching Shovel Knight at work, though, you can see WHY she doesn't seem to care all that much about that sort of thing.

"Ah, another diamond! Fortune smiles upon us this day, my friends!" she says cheerfully, as if finding precious gems and jewels was an everyday occurrence for her. Given that she's found a few trillion dwarfbux worth of diamonds and rubies every other time she cracks open a rock with her shovel, though-

Your thoughts come to a screeching halt, and you throw out an arm to stop your party members. Scrunching up your face, you... you /feel/ as much as hear faint vibrations in the rock ahead of you.

Right, looks like [X] [CHARGE] is the winning choice, so writing!

We haven't summoned them yet!

Also, that'd probably just slow down the digging in this case. Not only would you have the "only one dwarf can dig one square at a time" problem, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't survive Rokko and Shovel Knight's style of digging.

>[X] [CHARGE!]

Right, you growl as quietly as you can, pointing straight toward the source of the noise. There's an enemy ahead, so we're gonna cut 'em off before the fuckers ambush us.

"How do you know they're hostile?" Shovel Knight asks, looking at you a little skeptically (insofar as you can tell, given her helmet only has a T for a viewport)- but at least she's keeping her voice down, too.

Because you've got long years of experience backing you up, and each and every one of them's screaming that /nothing/ in the underground realm is bound to be friendly, especially not when they're digging toward you. Besides, you add at Shovel Knight's doubtful stare, you can always apologize if you DO end up jumping the wrong people.

Rokko, at least, is quick enough to back you up, her glowing gaze casting a faint light in these close dark quarters. "U-Understood," she stutters, aiming her arm cannon at a side wall. A few quick blasts later, you brush the debris off your armor and get back to digging-

And a scant thirty seconds of digging later, the wall suddenly crumbles- except you were prepared for this. You get a faint impression of sickly green skin and horribly large swords before the three of you leap into action- Shovel Knight slams her shovel into the wall, opening up a slightly larger space so that Rokko can get a clear shot, which she takes with gusto. And you-

>[X] [DIVING FORWARD!]
>93 - CRIT!
>[X] [SUMMONING!]
>85 - CRIT!

It's only as you charge forward that you get a good look at what you're up against: big, brutish humanoids so tall that they're forced to hunch down and come at you one at a time, looking like /heavily/ pixelated walls of solid green muscle plugging up the tunnel. Their horned helmets and steel shoulderpads scrape against the ceiling as they trundle forward, and they glare down their long noses at you, readying swords large enough to cleave you in twain-

Except Rokko's knocking them off their stride with drill bits that embed themselves in the trolls' barrel chests before detonating. Even as the first troll bellows in pain, its gaping bloody wounds start knitting themselves back together as they regenerate.

You almost start laughing on the spot. Whoever's controlling these fuckers knows /shit/ about fighting underground.

So you go in with a will, using the trolls' hunched-over postures against them- you slam your war hammer into the first one's head, and the injured part explodes into gore! Terrific, you roar, kicking hundreds of pounds of dead troll aside with a foot that weighs a fraction of that- then you smash through the next one that's stuck trying to squeeze past its ally's body, showering you in blood, and you get a vague sense that you've smashed ANOTHER troll's limbs, and then the fourth one goes down with a high-pitched shriek as you strike a gelding blow with your war hammer-

There's a lull in the action, and you come face to face with about twelve more war trolls, backed up by a VERY familiar Master of Magic.

"You-!"

Myrra's expression of shock and awe is absolutely priceless- she hisses at you, wide-eyed, and starts to conjure up some sort of spell. As you are now, though, you're way faster on the draw, thrusting one hand out and roaring a curse of your own.

(Cont.)
>>
>>40463854
Even before whatever it is you're summoning fully fades into this existence, the /thing/ trumpets out a deafening war cry and thunders forward, smashing the walls and ceilings around it into a fine powder as it /enlarges/ the tunnel merely by existing. Myrra's spell is cut off with a squeak as your monstrosity bats her aside with a malformed hand, and then it starts in on the war trolls with every sign of enjoyment, its elephantine trunk firing out a liquid that melts them into unrecognizable chunks of biological wreckage-

>The Forgotten Beast Gedor Luslemostuk Oth Banik has come! A gigantic one-eyed elephant twisted into humanoid form. It has a bloated body. Its dark green hair is long and straight. Beware its deadly spittle!

You slowly back away as the tunnel ahead is filled with gurgling screams, the sound of flesh dissolving, and the trumpeting laughter of your forgotten beast. Shovel Knight looks vaguely sick, though she doesn't drop her guard. "So that's... that's your own personal final boss, yes?" she laughs uneasily.

You quietly share a look with Rokko. Well... she COULD say that, you hedge. So anyway, your forgotten beast's got this thing well fucking wrapped up, you'd say.

"B-Block off this tunnel," the Blue Bomber suggests flatly "We were making, g-good time into Leanbox."

... well, you can't blame her for wanting to be away from this place, not after the LAST time you summoned a forgotten beast.

[ ] [OKAY YEAH] Consider this battle won: you're backtracking, sealing this tunnel, and continuing to dig into Leanbox. Besides, who knows where Myrra's tunnel leads?
[ ] [FINISH THIS] Clean up behind your very own forgotten beast and make sure Myrra won't cause any more trouble. It's best to be thorough about these sorts of things.

By being the whole of DF, does that mean we are also Armok? And if we're Armok, doesn't that mean its our destiny to destroy and recreate the world when it becomes stagnate?
>>
>>40464206
Our internal world, probably. It's like metaphysical or something.
>>
>>40463888
>[X] [OKAY YEAH]

Last time you saw them, Keeper and Myrra were already stronger than any outcast adventurer should be, able to give the likes of Estelle and Moru a run for their money. On one hand, leaving someone like the Master of Magic alone doesn't only seem like a real bad idea, but it also grates against your pride like nothing else.

On the other hand...

You take another look at the tunnel, which is currently filled with so much poison spittle that it's very nearly at a 1/7 liquid depth. Gedor's currently got a war troll in a chokehold with one fist, and showering it with even more horrendous flesh-melting poison, which apparently works so fast that even the troll's regenerative powers can't fucking keep up. Myrra is nowhere to be seen, and she's either a flesh-colored puddle on the floor or booking it as fast as she fucking can with a fractured spine and whatever else that one punch did to the spellcaster. And all this chaos was what happened when you DID have Gedor under control, in that you had enemies for it to kill.

... so, yeah, on the other hand, you don't want to die.

You seal up the tunnel with unseemly haste. Just to be on the safe side, you block the tunnel off about five walls deep, and /then/ you continue digging. Thankfully, you don't bump into anything else (and even MORE thankfully, Gedor or Myrra don't burst up through the floor to destroy you); in a few more minutes, you're starting to angle back up toward the surface, and it's not very long after that that you see sunlight again.

Leanbox, the nation that's the closest thing to a home you've had.

The first thing you all see when you break through the soil is that big honking halo in the evening sky- it's MORE noticeable now, since the sun's setting and the halo is emitting some sort of light. It honestly doesn't look much better when you're closer; it's just a glowing metal circlet that happens to be turning somewhat red. About an eighth of the halo looks like it's covered in luminescent blood, and as you stare, the red's spreading imperceptibly.

The second thing you notice is the big honking shimmering barrier that's engulfed the whole of Leanbox; from inside, it's like someone's upended a bowl over a bread roll. And you're, uh, standing on that bread roll. You're not that far from the shoreline, and even from here, you can see the cluster of boats floating on the ocean, blocked from entry by the barrier. Estelle's rainbow road is nowhere to be seen, probably having dissolved sometime while you were causing untold amounts of death and suffering.

Shovel Knight's staring up at the sky, her shovel forgotten by her side. "Now that's a bad omen if I've ever seen one," she mutters, her usual boisterous cheer muted. "The red ring. CPU Green Heart must truly be desperate to cleanse her nation if she's willing to resort to that."

First time you've heard of it, you mutter, helping Rokko out of the hole in the dirt. What's it do, again?

"R-Rid the land of, harmful influences," the Blue Bomber interjects. "Supposedly a, way to guard against t-the return of the d-dark goddess Arfoire."

... 'supposedly.'

Rokko shrugs. "B-Built years ago. We only, have the word of CPU Green Heart that it d-does what it's supposed to d-do, roughly twenty-two hours from n-now."

... nngh. That's not ominous or anything.

After you secure the entrance to the tunnel leading back to your fledgling fortress/realm and the outside world, the ensuing silence is broken by Shovel Knight, who's got her trademark weapon/tool over one shoulder ."It's getting dark. Perhaps we should set up camp?" she suggests.

You look around. It's a scrubby empty patch of land near to the beach. Out here? In the middle of nowhere? There's a freaking town not too far from here, and we're camping out under the stars like- like-

"It's quite safe," Shovel Knight reassures you. "Monsters cannot attack us when I light the correct type of bonfire. I learned it from Souls, you see!"

"E-Entering town at this time, in Leanbox, might carry its. Own problems," Rokko adds after some thought.

>loli dwarves
>actual dwarves
>something else

Yes, DF Arena and the nightgown are still part of your powers! It's an open question whether Urist will be able to access DF Arena twice in one day, though.

Also, it looks like we've got [X] [CAMP OUTSIDE] as a winning vote, and on the fort question, [X] [BUILD A SMALL BUNKER] seems like an appropriate compromise, so writing!
>>
>>40465089
We should try, the worst that could happen is embarrassing ourselves by showing off our new sleepwear.
>>
>>40464783
I wonder what happens to the enemies we just defeated if we use a bonfire from Souls...
Then again, I also wonder if having a tunnel next to a Forgotten Beast that runs beyond the barrier is hilarity waiting to happen or not.
But those are worries for what I suspect is after our current ones.

[x ] [CAMP OUTSIDE] Time is of the essence, and you can't afford NOT to be rested, given all the shit you've got ahead of you. It's got to be safer than going into town- who knows what sort of dystopia Leanbox is being turned into?
>>

About minions, are they permanent or temporary? If the latter,...where they go? What if they die for our sins during their summon duration?

What if we summon a little sister dwarf?
>>
>>40465218
One of the suggestions has been to summon things we don't mind losing first and finding out. We don't know yet. Alternately, perhaps the answer could be changed with effort on our part.
>>
>>40465218
>permanent or temporary
That's a very good question! But yeah, as >>40465247 says, whatever the case may be is changeable with time and effort.

>What if we summon a little sister dwarf?
... knowing how things usually go in Dwarf Fortress, that would end in nothing but tragedy!
>>
>>40465218
Those are all good questions and I'm sure the answer will be they all die horribly because getting attached to your dwarves is a terrible and idiotic idea.
>>
>>40465218
>What if we summon a little sister dwarf?

URIST! YOU CANNOT USE CHILDREN AS SHIELDS OR BLUDGEONING WEAPONS
>>
I feel bad for the adventurer who eventually finds Gedor years from now. Seemingly no reason for being where he is, no ruins, just some random tunnel to nowhere, just turning a corner and suddenly face to face with the embodiment of pachydermic death.
>>
>>40465297
Obviously they're bait, dwarves have a terrible weapon rating.

>[X] [CAMP OUTSIDE]
>[X] [... IN A BUNKER]

In the end, you hit on what you think is a pretty solid compromise: first, you shift locations over to the foothills, so the light of the campfire is less likely to attract undue attention. Second, you dig into the side of one hill- it's no fort, but that's okay, since the /last/ thing you need when trying to avoid attention is a great big honking edifice to dwarven ingenuity against the skyline.

Suffice to say, after seeing that no-holds-barred takedown of Blanc by Vert, and all that OTHER strange and suspicious behavior, you're not too keen on attracting divine attention in Leanbox.

It doesn't take you long to finish digging out a small bunker; it's literally another hole in the ground, and you've dug out (and lived in) LOTS of holes in the ground in your time. You even have time to make a few temporary wooden beds before Shovel Knight finishes setting up her campfire, which either says something about how slowly she works or how fast you've grown at building shit.

Estelle will be ecstatic, very much so.

So after a dinner consisting of whatever rations you guys had on you (they were surprisingly reluctant to let you cook up the forgotten beast meat you have in your pack, so you had that 'bread' stuff that you know is actually solid beer), you're all sitting in companionable silence around Shovel Knight's campfire. After being amazingly tense for the first half hour, you can't help but admit that there haven't been any attacks by ravening monsters (because you would've noticed 'em), and that it's probably as safe as your newest party member insisted it would be.

Right now, Rokko's got her back to the fire- she's staring up at the night sky, her unblinking eyes fixated on either the halo (visible even now) or the moon peeking out behind it. Shovel Knight... well, she's either staring off into the middle distance or she's shooting furtive glances at Rokko, and you can almost sense the "I hope senpai notices me!" waves radiating off her armor.

Start with shovel knight, then draw Rokko into the conversation at some point.

Estelle will be gushing over the little Dwarf while Urist pouts in the corner denying that anything is wrong

Okay, I'm losing steam, so I'm gonna have to end the thread here tonight!

Next one's going to be on Tuesday, 6/9, at 9-ish pm EST; the threads after that will be a little more tricky due to (more) travel and RL stuff happening throughout June, but at the very least, the schedule will be once a week on some weekend morning. I'll hash out the details next time!

Thanks for participating, guys, and sorry for all the delays to thread running- and also to that extra scene, since I haven't had time to work on it on the past few days. It'll be finished by Tuesday!

>>40465742
OH and updates will, as usual, be at https://twitter.com/BlorpQuest and questions can go either here or ask.fm/BlorpQuest!
