You are Louise du Petit-Thouars, a well-off lady in late 19th century Paris. In spite, or perhaps because, of your life of privilege you've grown fascinated with theft: the bigger and more daring, the better. As such, you grew fascinated with the Sultans treasure, a tribute from the Sultan of Morocco to the French state as a sign of goodwill. Despite numerous attempts, you've failed to steal the treasure twice. During your attempt to seduce the director of the Louvre, where the Sultans treasure is being stored, you ended up destroying a priceless Etruscan masterpiece and getting yourself banned from the museum for life.

You decided to hone some relevant skills before taking on big tasks, so you don't end up messing up again. You signed up for ballet classes to improve your flexibility, and made plans to steal some ancient Korean books stored in France before they could be brought back to their rightful lands. Considering they're being stored in the national library, you ended up somewhat succesfully seducing its director.

It's 8 pm and you've agreed to meet up in a small restaurant, l'Alsasacienne, for dinner. Roll a d20 to see if we succeed or miserably fail in the art of seduction once more.

Some rules and other affairs of note:
>Louise is an educated woman, and therefore assumed to be fluent in French, Spanish, Italian, English and German
>Louise is affluent, it is assumed that she can afford most services and purchases
>The campaign is semi-historical: the campaign will take place somewhere between 1880 and 1900, but some minor facts or persons may be changed
>Automobiles exist, but are not widely available. Louise does not possess one.

>When a roll is required, the best roll of the first three will be picked
>Rolling a 20 means automatic success, rolling a 1 means automatic failure. They do not cancel each other out
>The standard DC for the theft of a prominent treasure is 20, this means that only a natural 20 will result in a successful theft
>There are many factors that can increase or decrease the DC for a theft, a non-exclusive list will follow

Bonuses:
>Familiarity with or blueprints of the location (-2 DC)
>Gained the trust of a minor key figure such as a guard (-2 DC) or a major key figure such as the captain of the guard or the victim himself (-4 DC) (Non-cumulative)
>The theft is committed while the treasure to be stolen is being transported (-2 DC)
>The theft is committed while the treasure to be stolen is outside of Europe * (-2 DC)

Penalties:
>A major key figure knows Louise and has reason to suspect or dislike her (+4 DC)
>The treasure to be stolen has been stored in a vault, safe or other such secure location (+2 DC)
>The treasure cannot be carried away inconspicuously and no appropriate measures to transport the treasure to a safe place have been taken (+2 DC)

*Colonial and indigenous authorities are presumed to be less motivated and easier to bribe

When you get inside you see that your target, Victor Frézier, is already waiting for you. You join him at the table and greet him. He nervously grabs your hand and kisses him, visibly sweating in the process. You assume that he's a rather timid guy, perhaps even a bit inexperienced with women. Perfect, this means he knows even less about seduction than you do. You can't fail, right?

Dinner seems to be going well. You exchange some small talk and he confirms that he's indeed the director of the National Library. You make up a fake name for yourself and explain that you've just moved to Paris looking for an eligible man for marriage. That's also what you told your father so technically it's not entirely a lie. At the mention of marriage, Victor begins sweating even more profusely. You decide to help him out a little by using a handkerchief to wipe the sweat off his brow. "There's no need to be so nervous, Victor."

Victor only grows a deeper shade of red and mumbles a shy "Y-you too." If all men were this easy to fluster, you would've had your hands on the Sultans treasure by now. You'll have to make do with some Korean books instead, not that this is a horrible prospect. During dessert you even slip off one of your shoes and gently stroke your foot along his shin, making him jump up a little in surprise.

"M-miss, is this decent?! W-we've barely even met!" It looks like you're finally starting to get the hang of it.

As you walk out of the restaurant, you feel pretty good about yourself. The date was by all means a success, and you've finally managed to use your charms succesfully. You decide to...

"I really had fun tonight, Victor!". The shy director doesn't reply. He smiles faintly, but mostly stares at his own feet. You catch him by surprise with a soft kiss on his cheek. "How about I drop by the office tomorrow morning?"

Victor is grinning from ear to ear and seems to fumble with his words. "Uhm... err... y-yes? Yeah, sure! That sounds good! Would be great! Yes!" That night, you go home with a heart full of contentment. Succesfully seducing a man has boosted your self-esteem, and made you believe that perhaps you have a kneck for theft after all.

The next morning, you confidently strut into the national library and ask one of the guards for the directors office. He shows you the way and you let yourself in. "Victor, honey, how have you been?" You sit on the side of his desk, legs crossed, and lean in just enough to give Victor a soft kiss on the nose.

"F-fine, how about you?". He appears to be a bit less nervous than yesterday. Maybe he's growing accustomed to you?

You start out by replying to Victors question before trying to get more information about the Korean books out of him. "Great, great! Especially now that I'm with you!" Victor smiles and blushes. You almost feel bad for toying with him... almost. "So I read the newspaper this morning, and there's some Korean books you're giving back to the Koreans, right?"

You can see the director relax as he starts speaking with great enthusiasm and emotion. He must be pretty passionate about the subject. "Yeah, they're leaving two days from now. It's a bit of a shame. I understand that the Koreans want their books back and they're entitled to them, but they're such a unique addition to our collection. I'm sad to see them go." The bespectacled man sighs deeply. "What I regret the most is that we couldn't even translate most of them."

"How many books are there?" you ask. You try to keep him talking. The more he willingly tells you, the more useful information you could filter out of his words.

"Fourteen." You can see some sadness in his face. "We could only get one translated, and our translator is halfway through the second one. We'd be very lucky if he finishes it on the day after tomorrow."

"My fingers are crossed!" you reply. "What time are the books leaving anyway?"

"They'll be picked up at four in the afternoon. After that, they'll be brought to Brest by train and shipped to Korea from there. Such a shame! I've begged president Grévy to give me a year to translate the entire collection, but to no avail!"

"The president must be really intent on getting those books back to Korea" you muse, hoping to pry some more information out of the gullible director. "They must be pretty heavily guarded then!"

Victor shrugs. "Not really. we just have them stored in a safe in the basement. Except for the second book, that one's being translated in the West Wing." He throws up one hand in frustration. "We only have one translator, and we had to get him here all the way from Dijon. He's not cheap, but at least he's fast. Not fast enough, sadly."

You want to know as much as possible. You just need a little more information until you're satisfied. Luckily, Victor seems more than willing to tell you about the books.

"Then what about the transfer to Brest? How is that happening?"

"I'm doing that myself, with three aides from the library." The director leans back in his chair with a satisfied grin on his face. "President Grévy trusts me enough to let me do it for him. He has always trusted me, ever since he started his first term. You could even call us close friends." Somehow you doubt this. You have a gut feeling that their relationship isn't as much a friendship as it is the president ordering Victor around. "In Brest, it will be transported with the same ship that the diplomatic mission will use, including the Minister of Finance himself! Of course, security will be pretty heavy. Hundreds of soldiers and four cruisers will escort them to Korea.

That's a lot of information. You only need a last few bits of information before you're satisifed. "That sounds like a pretty big deal. But what's actually in those books?"

Victor grimaces a little. "We're not entirely sure. Our translator glossed through them, and from what we can tell the first ten books are a very detailed account of Korean history. The next two appear to be legal codes, the next one something scientific and we're not even sure what the last one is. Our translator suggests it might be mythical in nature but we're not entirely sure." He sighs. "And we'll probably never know."

You've gotten all the information you want about the books, and even a bit more. You feel like you should go home and plan your robbery in detail, but you feel like having another date with Victor. You're not sure why. Maybe you want to get some more information about him and the library? Maybe you want to earn even more of his trust? Maybe you actually like him? No, that would be unthinkable... right?

"Victor, would you like to have another dinner date tonight? We can try going somewhere else, if you'd like."

The director of the national library nods happily. "Of course! I'll have to stay in late again today though, I still need to take care of things. Will I see you outside at seven?"

You nod and leave, but not before giving Victor another kiss on his cheek.

You haven't seen the books yet. There were also no good pictures in the newspaper. Even though photographs were starting to become a thing around this period, if I'm not mistaken newspapers still generally had drawings rather than photographs.

You decide to spend the remaining few hours until the date wandering around the library. You want to get a general feel of the place and find your way around. Having a map is nice, but nothing beats walking around in person to truly get to know the place. You notice that the building is rather large, and almost every section seems to have floors of finely worked hardwood. You barely notice any guards. There was one at the entrance, you noticed two others walking around and finally you meet one near the staircase leading to the basement. You want to look around in the basement as well, but this guard doesn't let you pass. You also notice that the building has many windows that let more than enough sunlight enter, but all of them appear to be very high up. If you want to enter or leave through them, you'd have to do quite a bit of climbing. Deciding you've scoped out the place enough, you try to read a few books to pass the time.

A few hours later, Victor appears behind you and taps you on your shoulder. "Are you ready to leave?"

"Yes, let's go!" You wrap yourself around Victors arm and let him lead the way. You've spent the better part of this morning prying as much information out of him as you could, you decide to just have a nice date with him tonight. You let the Korean books and anything involving them be for now, you still have tomorrow and the day after that to worry about them.

You find yourself inside La Couronne du Comte, one of the most prestigious restaurants in all of Paris. Compared to the smaller and somewhat homely restaurant from the previous date, this restaurant is rather overwhelming. A waiter approaches you when you enter. "I'm very sorry, but we're fully booked for ton- mister Frézier? My apologies, I'm sure we can arrange a table for you and madame!" The waiter then hurries off to prepare a table for you.

Victor smiles at you with some pride. "Being the director of a prestigious public institutions has its perks." Not much later, the waiter guides you to your newly prepared table and offers you a menu. Victor orders for both of you: A salade Niçoise to start off, followed by Filet Mignon and a Strawberry Parfait for dinner. You feel like you're getting pampered, but you're not complaining.

The date is marked by some amicable small talk. During these chats you once again take off one of your shoes and slide your foot up his legs, this time as high up as his knees. You enjoy watching him fumble and try to pretend there's nothing happening. His hand is shaking so much, he almost knocks over his glass of wine. You start to wonder if you enjoy teasing poor Victor too much for your own good.

You end your date outside of the restaurant. "Louise, I had a lot of fun but it's time to go. I need to get up early tomorrow."

>Kiss him on the cheek, go home
>Kiss him on the mouth, go home
>Tell him you don't want the date to end, offer to continue the date at his place

>>40452847
DC explanation in next post.
>>
>>40452847
The DC right now is 16

-4 for having the director like us (an abstraction of all the information he shared with us)
-2 for being familliar with the library and having its plans
+2 for the books being stored in a secure location

This is assuming there is adequate transport and that you're stealing from the library. Stealing during transportation lowers the DC by 2, not having proper transportation for the stolen goods increases it by 2.

You move in a bit closer and draw circles on Victors chest with your finger, making him breathe deeper and more frequently. "I had fun too, but I'm not ready for this night to end. How about we move this date to your place?"

Victor is growing beet red and looks like he's about to faint. "B-back to.. my... o-okay." He halts a coach and orders to have you driven to his house. He's as quiet as a mouse during the ride back. As you lean your head against his shoulder, you feel him flinch but he doesn't resist.

His residence is a villa that is a bit larger than yours, but nothing compared to your fathers estate in Bordeaux. Nevertheless, you can't help but feel just a little impressed. Inside, a butler greets the two of you, accompanied by a few maids and other aides. The butler seems to be a middle aged man, quite a bit older than your Philippe. "Maître Frézier, shall I prepare a bath for you?"

"Yes... I mean no! T-two baths! Separate!". The butler bows and orders some maids to prepare the baths for you and lead you to your respective bathrooms. You enjoy a warm, lavender scented bath and let all tension seep out of your body. You start thinking about the absurdity of the entire situation. This man is supposed to be your victim in one or two days, and now you find yourself in his house. Are you sure this is still just an act, or is it more than just that? You honestly don't know.

>>
After the bath, a maid borrows you one of her nightgowns and guides you to the master bedroom. There you find Victor sitting on his bed, nervously fiddling with his fingers. Without uttering a word you sit next to him and kiss him deeply. The kiss is a sloppy mess, with two tongues completely lost and fumbling around. It's obvious that both of you have no idea what you're doing. During the kiss you stroke his thigh and slowly move your hand to his groin, feeling up his prominent bulge before he slaps your hand away. In surprise you break the kiss.

"I-I'm sorry, it's just that... I've never really...been with a woman. Can't we just sleep together tonight? I-I-I mean actually sleep! Not.. you know... things..."

You decide to accept his limits. "Sure, whatever you're comfortable with." Victor sighs in relief and invites you to lie down with him in bed. After some awkward shifting and turning around, you finally end up spooning him.

You try to tease him a little by moving your left hand down his body and rubbing his groin, giving his member a light squeeze. he gently grabs you by the wrist to move your hand away, but you're not done teasing him. You move your hand towards his, firmly interlocking your fingers with his. You've never noticed how big and warm his hands are, or how much joy holding them gives you. His breathing becomes more intense, but you try to calm him down with soft kisses to his neck, never letting go of his hand. "Shhh, it's okay. Just go to sleep." With his hand firmly in your grasp, Victor dozes off.

Your feelings for Victor are still confusing. The way you just acted towards him, it was almost as if you were young lovers. Can you really see yourself settling down, let alone with a glorified librarian? And yet you can't keep your mind off how handsome he is without his glasses, how much fun it is to tease him and how endearing his rare moments of confidence are.

In spite of your emotions, you decide that theft comes first. You seduced Victor to get closer to the Korean books in the first place, you musn't forget that! After making sure that Victor is fast asleep, you carefully get up to snoop around in his room, and maybe the rest of the house.

Anons, roll d20. Crit guy, ruin both the romance and the prospects of theft with a single natural 1!

Hey, you got a 13, that's super unlucky.
>>
You get up and carefully sneak around the bedroom. Victor doesn't seem to have awakened. You quietly go through his nightstand drawers, his closet and a small file cabinet. They're mostly filled with normal things: clothes, books, tax papers and the like. You do however find a note with a few numbers on them. Maybe this is the combination for the library's safe? Next, you try to slip out of the room to snoop around in the rest of the house, but you're caught by a maid. "Is something wrong, madame?"

Caught, but there's no reason for her to suspect you. If you can quickly make up an excuse, you can probably save yourself a lot of trouble. "I...uh... I was a bit thirsty, I wanted to get a glass of water." You whisper.

The maid politely waves for you to go back inside. "Please go back to bed, I'll bring you some water shortly." Not much later she indeed brings a glass of cold mineral water to you. You couldn't look around in the rest of the house, but at least you have what appears to be the combination.

The next morning you are awoken by the same maid that you encountered yesterday night. When you notice that Victor is no longer besides you, the maid tries to reassure you. "Maître Frézier has gone to work, but he didn't want to wake you up Madame." You decide to have Victors staff make you some breakfast before going back home.

As soon as you enter your house, you hear Philippe rushing to the front door. "Madame, madame! are you okay?" He inspects your face, neck and arms. "Madame, where were you? Were you kidnapped? Lost? I was this close to informing the police!"

"Calm down Philippe! I'll explain everything." you sit down with your butler before elaborating. You explain everything: the information you were given, the date you had and the night you spent at Victors house. You find yourself rambling a bit about Victor, about how nice and handsome he is. Philippe can't help but raise an eyebrow.

"Madame, are you in love with Victor?" You fumble with your words. "Yes! No.... maybe? I don't know! Can you repeat the question?"

Philippe sighs. "Madame, do you want to steal the books or not? You do realize that if this theft succeeds you will ruin mister Fréziers career, right? The director of the national library won't get away unpunished for letting books of such diplomatic value slip away under his nose."

Philippe's words are harsh and stinging in their factuality. He reminds you of the harsh reality: regardless of your feelings, the man you spent last night with is also the man you were planning to rob before you even knew his name. Suddenly changing plan would make you look like a little girl blinded by her first love. Well, maybe you are blinded by your first love but you're not a little girl!

"I'm not in love with him, Philippe. I'm not!" You find it hard to get these words out of your mouth but somehow you succeed. "We were planning to steal those books and that's what we're going to do. I have not changed my mind."

Philippe nods respectfully. "That is your decision to make and I respect it. I can only pray that you've made the right choice. So what are your plans for this theft?"

Given the circumstances, you think over what the best plan of action would be.
>Rob the library tonight [write-in an exit plan/general strategy]

"We've finally gotten to the stage where we can actually start robbing" you declare. "First of all, we need masks to hide our identities. The windows of the library are up high, so I need rope, a grappling hook and a glass cut. I also need a backpack, anything that can be used to pick locks and a knife just in case. Finally boots with soft, thick soles. The floors are hardwood, I need shoes that don't make any noise. Buy all these things for me one by one in different locations, we don't need to draw any unneeded attention."

Philippe does as you ordered. In the late afternoon he returns with everything you need: two Venetian masks, a rope with a grappling hook, a glass cut, a sturdy backpack, two long and thin hairpins, a stiletto and some sturdy, soft soled boots.

"Perfect" you declare, looking over the tools of your trade. "Victor usually leaves work between 7 and 8, so we need to start our robbery late. Let's go with 11."

Later that night, you find yourself outside of the national library with all your gear. Philippe has disguised himself as well. "Stay here and look for any signs of trouble. I'm going in."

Shit just got real, roll d20.

DC is 14 by the way: -4 for knowing the director, -2 for knowing the library and having the plans, +2 for the safe but -2 for knowing the combination.

You throw up your grappling hook and, through a stroke of luck, manage to fix it on the edge of the roof. After giving the rope a few good tugs to check if it can hold your weight, you climb up along the wall. When you reach the window, you struggle to find the right position to cut a proper hole in the glass. You're confronted with how clumsy you are, and hope that your ballet classes will help you in the future. After some struggling, you manage to cut out a hole large enough to fit your body. You struggle to fit the length of your rope inside of that hole and carefully climb down, silently putting the cut out circle of glass on the floor. Luckily you know the library well and manage to make a beeline for the staircase without being noticed. You hide behind a bookcase and spot the lone guard guarding the staircase. You play with the idea of throwing a knife at him, but luckily that's not needed: you see him step away to chat with another guard. This allows you to quickly slip past him to the basement. There you find a few other bookcases but most notably a large safe. Remembering the combination you found noted in Victors house, you quickly open it. Inside you find large and thick books numbered with Roman numerals. You guess that the old covers were damaged and replaced by newer ones. You try to remember what Victor told you about the books: the first 10 were Korean history, the next two legal codes, the thirteenth one scientific accounts and the last one something unknown, possibly mythical.

You look in your backpack and guess that you can only fit in three books. Choose which three you'd like to take.

You decide that the last book appeals to you the most. Nobody has any idea what's in them, nobody in France at least, the mystery attracts you. The scientific one seems pretty interesting too, and you decide to also take a legal one just because you can fit it in your backpack. You take the books numbered 12, 13 and 14. You sneak back up the stairs only to find that the guard has returned to his old post, guarding the stairway. He has his back turned to you, but you can't get past him.

You clench your fists. Damn it, you're so close to escaping and now this guy is blocking your way? You have half a mind to knock him out with a solid punch to the back of the head, but deside to wait it out. It's safer, leaves behind less evidence and if he really doesn't leave you can always decide to knock him out anyway.

Your patience is rewarded: after a few minutes, the guard takes a few steps forward to stretch his legs. It's not much, but enough for you to rapidly slip past him without being noticed. You quickly make your way to the window you used to climb in, make you way up and climb down again on the outside. You then struggle a little to dislodge the grappling hook, but eventually succeed. Rolling up your rope and fitting it in your backpack, you nod to Philippe. "We're done here, let's leave."

Back in the safety of your home, store the three books in your "vault", the empty basement where you've decided to keep all your conquests. Your first succesful theft makes you feel pretty good about yourself.

"It's a shame I could only take three of them, but these books are now all mine! It feels great! I can't wait to get them translated."

"I'd advise against that." notes Philippe sternly. "The government will know that these books were stolen come tomorrow morning. Someone looking for a Korean translator would look highly suspicious. Perhaps it would be a better idea to learn Korean yourself?"

You scoff. "That'd take me years, decades even. You know how oriental languages are, each symbol is its own separate word. There's no rhyme or reason behind it!"

Yes, I posted pic related just to be facetious
>>

With a succesful conquest under your belt, you go to sleep. The next morning, your theft is frontpage news. "Valuable Korean books stolen! President predicts crisis" the headline reads.

You can't help but feel smug as the article describes what is known of the theft. The exact methods are unknown, but the thief or thieves seem to have entered through a hole in the ceiling. They have then passed by all the guards and opened the safe where the books were stored without any signs of force or violence. What amuses you the most is the interview with the guard in front of the staircase named Pierre Thoureau.

>"I stood in front of this staircase all night and barely budged. I never saw anything, I never heard anything, I never felt anything. I didn't fall asleep and only had one glass of wine with dinner. If this staircase is the only one leading to the basement, how did the thieves get past me? It makes no sense!"

Another interview with president Grévy is more severe in tone.

>"This theft has come at the worst possible timing. Some parties wanted to keep the books for the prestige of France, others wanted to see them returned for financial benefit. Now it seems that both parties won't get what they want. We'll have to inform the Koreans that we can't fully fulfill our end of the bargain, which will inevitably lead to a diplomatic crisis."

The minister of colonies seems more enthusiastic.

>"While the theft of important cultural objects is always lamentable, we must not forget to exploit the situation to its fullest. We already have a strong presence in the Orient through our Indochinese colonies and our Chinese trade ports. This crisis would give us a legitimate reason to strengthen our presence in the region even further by establishing a protectorate in Korea. This is simply a blessing in disguise."

2/3
>>
>>40457262
According to the newspaper, the director of the National Library has formally apologized for a lack of proper security of these important cultural artefacts and diplomatic bargaining chips. In order to fully atone, he has resigned from his position. An interview with the minister of Internal Affairs suggests that this resignation may have not been entirely of his own volition, but the result of presidential pressure.
