You yawn loudly, distractedly cracking your neck, blinking as you stare around awkwardly at the slow-moving caravan.

It feels like it's been weeks.

Short, half-day stopovers in small towns were a welcome distraction from the long winding road, following the river towards the trading central city. And while the exercise wasn't anything even approaching what would be needed to wear you out, the meandering monotony of trees slowly giving way to plains and an endless road were more than enough to leave you dazed and weary-minded.

Which is why you're bothering drivers and the like.
Or in this case, Sanny, Kenzington's wife.

"-but what about floating the caravan down the river, yes?"
You're fairly certain that was possible? Horse drawn contrivances made of wood were not your area of expertise, even now.

The woman shakes her head with a frown, hair bouncing side to side.
"Mostly, the wagons roll over in the water."
"Oh."
"Or they hit a rock and break."
"I see. What about-"
"Sometimes they just sink."

You glance sideways at the smiling woman, sighing.

>Do you want me to ask 'Are we there yet?' I can do that, instead.
>There has to be something you can do to pass the time.
>Anything is better than this. Maybe you could train Ezzy?

You groan, one hand coming to your forehead, chitinous fingers sweeping your loose hair back. It might be time for another braid? Even Nin is busy nowadays, running around the caravan and doing odd jobs to fill her time.

You'd join her, but you've signed on as a guard.

So your job is to guard things.

Which is why you walk beside the wagons and stare into space. And pray for something, anything, to attack. Or make noise.

You shake your head again to dispel your worsening attitude, scowling at the small woman.
"If you would prefer- I can ask 'Are we there yet', yes?" You say sweetly.
She stares.
"Over and over again." You continue.

"You couldn't."
You smile, all childlike innocence.
"Oh, but I am not even a year old. I could not possibly contain my bursting curiousity-"
"You wouldn't dare."

You point your finger accusingly.
"You have forced my hand, yes."
She folds her arms sternly, bracing herself.
"I didn't want to have to do this, child- But I am ready and willing to speak nothing but puns and terrible spider jokes until we arrive in the city."

You hiss.

"Don't be like that. Can't you see that you're trapped in my web?"
"Are we there yet?"
"We'd arrive faster if you didn't have two left feet-"
"Are we there yet?"
"It must suck to eat things wrapped in web-"
"ARE WE THERE YET-"
"SO WHEN YOU FISH, IS IT ALWAYS FLY FISHING-"
"ARE WE THERE YET ARE WE THERE YET-"

Kenzington forcibly separates the two of you.
And puts you both in time-out.

Which leaves you with little to do, once more.

So you start by spreading the misery around a little. Or at least acquiring a conversational partner.
It doesn't take much work to wake up Ezzy.
>>
>>40371083

Or maybe it did, but at this point you could do just about anything for hours without realizing it.

"Mngh. Mmmn. Wha?"
The little snake slithers slowly upright, stretching int eh way only a snake can. You wonder if her upper body has the same sort of flexibility? It seems like it, but it might just be Ezzy. It's hard to pinpoint what the characteristics of a species are compared to an individual.

"Good morning, yes."
"Moooorning." She smiles sleepily, eyes drooping.
"I was thinking, yes?"
"Yes?"

You nod, careful not to dislodge her. Which you couldn't do anyway as her tail wraps a few times around your neck, but caution never hurt anyone.
"That we could start your training. What do you think?"
"...Maybe tomorrow?"

You snort, the burst of air blowing her hair about.
"It has been 'tomorrow' for days now."
"It isn't tomorrow yet, though."
"Which is why it is starting today."

Don't really see why people voted for it myself, but I suppose training it might necessary to unlock options that benefit from upper body srtength in the first place.
>>
>>40371385
She moves with her tail. She naturally builds muscle when she's not being lazy. The upper half actually needs work, unless she goes constrictor route.
>>
>>40371509
But Anon, she is ALWAYS being lazy
>>
>>40371509
>when she's not being lazy
Thats pretty much the problem.
She primarily needs that tail, and she is not in good shape, its the first thing that should be trained.
>unless she goes constrictor route
Which would be pretty ideal for her, honestly.
She already kills things by constriction.
>>
I think upper body is good for the snake, she needs to work more than her jaw and tail.

>>40371557
She doesn't work her tail either. But she needs the tail for a lot more stuff than her uppder body, she can do everything perfectly fine without upper body strength, there is nothing she can do without tail strength.

Red arachne. There are clear eschelons of power that are - or were - generational. Even if title alone dictates it, there are probably spider broods more highly regarded.

>>
>>40371991
Considering Nins obsession with the history of the city, and since arachne nobility if it exists would definitly hail from that time, yes we can totally assume such a thing.
Arachne soceity as we know it, meaning that it doesn't really exist, simply doesn't lend itself to nobility as concept. Maybe a few broods that take particular tasks, like Moms, but since there was no mention of her being spider nobility thats pretty much it.
>>
>>40372040
>So, in theory, the world's strongest, most highly-evolved arachne will spawn low-level, base evo arachne?
There is a bit about that in the ask, REQm hasn't really decided how he wants it to go, for all intents and purposes right now, yes.
All monster start back from the base. Until REQM decides otherwise.
>>
>>40372040
That seems to be the theory, Mom was a widow arachne and we were born as the base form.
>>
>>40372011
Hence why mother is the leader of the raiding force earlier on.

Arachne did have an organized society in the city though. And someone pompus enough about their bloodline is bound to show up if you look around, even if they live in a tree like everyone else.

Again, you can't make those assumptions.
>>
>>40372084
>Hence why mother is the leader of the raiding force earlier on.
She wasn't the leader actually.
There were other arachne who organized it, she was just among the leaders because of being one of the strongest arachne around and having called the gathering.

>>40372084
>Again, you can't make those assumptions.
At this point speculating ona spider nobility with not hint on their existence nor reason for them to exist is the assumptiom.

>>
>>40372084

Someone having a high opinion of themselves doesn't make them nobility in any socially meaningful sense.

REQM's mentioned that the moths back then had their own concerns - no little hype dust maker for the old queen.
>>
>>40372496
Pretty much: she came up with the idea, then realized too late that she was the only person of her race that was invested enough in the idea to act as part of the governing body. Then realized too late that she was the only person impartial and/or strong enough to get a bunch of monster races to get along enough to establish a community together. And then the lizards and the humans cocked it all up anyways.

That's my guess, at least, based on what we know.

Urgh, this again.

They own land, are no merchants and are elven nobility.
They just aren't particularly high ranking ones.

Elf-grandma was planning to have her son marry up even further, because he had the luck to be a mage.
The only mage in their family to be specific.

Elf-grandpa isn't nearly as invested in climbing the social ladder as elf-grandma.

Elf-aunt married an elven merchant and they've been (unsuccessfully) trying for kids for a while.

Elf-great-grandpa vaguely remembers hearing about the spiders ruling an empire in the forest a few centuries ago and therefor thinks they are still in charge over there.
>>
>>40372551
Her Nin doesn't mean it must have been a moth, could have been a werewolf who wanted someone to put and end to the fighting among the wolves.
>>
>>40372551
Maybe another race-Nin. Like a Lamia-Nin. Somebody that wanted a queen and the Arachne didn't wanted to be a ruler but ended up ruling.

>>
You pry her off your neck even as she complains, scrabbling at your skin to try and stay comfy.
You aren't having any of it.

You hold the little pouting lamia out in front of you, her shoulders poking her jaw, arms hanging wide with your hands holding her up beneath them.
"I don't- I don't really need it."
"Oh?"

She nods, trying to find affirmation.
"I am already strong, aren't I?"
"You could be stronger."
She whines ineffectually.
"But Lyraaaaa-"

"No butts. For every day you want to sleep through, you have to do some exercise, yes."
The raw look of horror across her face is more comparable to a girl being told she needs to eat the family pet, rather than someone told they have to work out a bit.

You roll your eyes.
"Stop with that face, yes. I will start with something simple."
She eyes you warily, tongue flickering out distrustfully.
"Simple?"

You switch to holding her one handed, offering your other arm above her- For all Esmerelda's complaints, she isn't stupid.
Just a little lazy. And very much wanting to go back to sleep.

Her tail snaps up to try and hold her up, and you pull your arm out of reach.

"Hey!"
"Hey yourself, yes. Use your arms."
"But they're so smallll-"
"They will have to get bigger, then."

She pouts again, but you're immune. Immune!
You just need to turn away because there's something interesting on the plain. New grass. Yes.

She surrenders, reaching up and holding your wrist, her tail half-spooled beneath her. She looks to you, shaded beneath your wrist, already puffing lightly to keep hanging on.

"Now what?"
"Now, you pull yourself up."
"That's it?"
"And then you do it again and again, yes."
>>
>>40372660

She groans.

But she still sets herself to work.

It's impressive, honestly. You didn't think she had that sort of upper body strength- Chin-ups are one thing, but you maybe sort of forgot that her lower body is significantly larger (proportionally, of course) than a humans.

You'd think that you of all people would remember that some people have large bottom bits, but here you are.

Still-

Ezzy manages a respectable thirty-five chin ups, though she's wheezing and sweating pitifully afterwards.
She manages a weak glare when you pick her up, though it turns into a look of abject thankfulness when you wind her into the water-filling backside of your shield.

The most hilarious thing over this entire setup is that Erics disappearing for decades because he wanted to explore ruins is more or less something that upset elf-grandma, but also something she considers to be nothing more than a phase he'll grow out of in the next century or so.

The fact that something actually meaningful might have happened in his life by now isn't really something that occurs to elven mentality, especially not since Erics has totally forgotten to write anyone anything at all.

Showing up and announcing that we're Erics' daughter is also going to be the very first time Elf-grandma will be confronted with the thought that she might not get to marry Erics off at all.

>So, in theory, the world's strongest, most highly-evolved arachne will spawn low-level, base evo arachne?
A bit late, but I found the entry by accident while looking through the ask

>
How does the parent's evolution tier affect their offspring? I mean, obviously our mother gave birth to base form Arachnes in spite of being Tier 2, but picturing i.e. ogres giving birth to goblins or the children of gods being base form monsters seems a bit wierd.
From what I remember from the LN (a much later and mostly machine translated part) Monsters do have evolved offspring, though the kids themselves were all over the place.
I kind of ran with it in a couple of ways- Arachne to Widow Arachne isn't a jump like goblin-hobgoblin-ogre is.
Mostly though, I approached it from a meta perspective- It's a great deal more satisfying for players to be the ones causing evolutions, and giving them a form of control over it makes them that much more excited for it.
I was thinking of handwaving it in the future- things like 'higher evolutions breed tru-er' sort of thing. So any future siblings might be widow arachne, or even hatch with horns. Because, again, from a meta perspective- Having evolved monsters birth evolved monsters would really, really fuck up the 'ecosystem'.
If evolved monsters are being born, then unevolved monsters basically have no chance. And this would continue, till the point where monster civilizations would be nothing but highly evolved turbo monsters, and that's something I'd rather avoid.
We'll have to see.

In case you were still curious.
>>
>>40373352

Kobold's good, and Harpy's a bit too soon to tell but's started out well.

>>
>>40373432
The "fuckwit" comment is 100% true.
>>
>>40373449
perhaps its because the goblins etc evolve into different species of monster entirely, if they evolve, whereas the spiders are still spiders, just better.
>>
>>40372040
Well, if high level monsters spawned higher tier children, then eventually everyone would be born one level below the max. It would be simple evolution.. the mundane kind though.

>>40373570
That still doesn't really work because they more competitive ones, like werewolves, would still end up all being high-evolved at birth to the most part.
All starting base-form with maybe some cosmetical traits from a very highyl evolved parent is a elegant enough solution I think.

It doesn't take long for Ezzy to make herself comfortable- Clearing a little pool-space in the centre of her tail to lay her human body in. She tightens her coils, creating a little cup of her own to hold more water, letting her submerge herself in the cool water.

She sighs gently, shaking her shoulders side to side, trying to worm her way into the perfect position.

You let your hands start to glow, the metal and water gradually conducting your heat to the little reptile. Her smile turns sleepy, arms propped up on her own tail, dopey eyes meeting your own as you grin down at her.

"You did well, yes? You are stronger than I thought."
She smiles back up, even wider- Her fangs visible as her lips pull back, a light blush of exertion on her cheeks still.
"I can hunt! Of courssssse I'm strong."
You nod along with her proclamation.

She has come a long way, really- Not just in being able to do things. When you met her, the lamia was scarcely able to speak without hiding her face after every accidental hiss.

And now it's just kind of cute, though it only happens when she gets wound up.
Or Sleepy.

Maybe 'only happens' is a weak phrase.

"I thought- I do not know how strong you are, yes? What can you do now?"
She nods seriously.
"I can lift-"

Her hands are up in front of her face, lips mouthing words as she counts down her fingers, proudly displaying six of them for your approval.
"Six stonessss!"
"I was suprised that you could lift yourself, yes? Your tail is very big."
She blushes lightly at the 'compliment'- Really, anything being described as big for her is it's own little joy.

But she snaps her head side to side.
>>
>>40373687

"I do not weigh ssssix ssstone!"
You have no idea what that even means, or how much a stone weighs. Is that a measurement? You assumed she was talking about the little rocks she'd work out with at the nest.
No, she was definitely talking about rocks.
Now you're just confused.

You shrug it off, though the snake snorts, tongue flickering in her displeasure.

She seems pretty happy now, so-
"Well, there is something else we can try."
"Hmm?"

"What if we made a maze, yes?"
"A... maze?"
"Yes! And then you could go in, and we could put little-"
She comes awak all at once, glowering at you from her position in your hands.

"No tiny animal whatever!"
"Arena! We could just call it animal arena. It doesn't need to be tiny-"
"I Refussssse!"

Curses.

With your current conversational partner- and part time student/potential arena star- halfway back to hibernation, you're free to divert your attention to other things currently occurring. Like the voices being raised at the head of the caravan, shouts indistinguishable from one another.

But no screams, or horses going wild- Something small, then?

In any case, this is the point where you should find Nin, you think.

Ezzy is dozing off in the miniature hot tub- Removing her, drying her off and returning her to any of her preferred sleeping zones is easy enough. The snake has some sort of automatic instinct to get closer to warmth, and to coild up as she sleeps.

You imagine that that is how she stays attached to you through thick and thin.
Unless you forget her under Lann's pillow, but that neither here no there.
Literally not here, in any case.

Your moth is easy enough to find- hanging off the back of a caravan, trying to look around the ones in front of her and see what's going on. Though she swaps her attention top you easily enough.

"Having a good day, Lyra?"
You make a thoughtful face.
"Maybe? I had a small argument with Sanny, yes. And then I had Ezzy exercise."
"Wasn't that tomorrow."

"Every day will be tomorrow for you, yes."
She giggles a bit, shaking her head.
"I do not sleep my days away, thank you."
"No, you cause problems."
"For who?"

You shoot the moth a flat look.
"For me, yes. Always for me."
"My lady, I would never-"
"See, this is what I am talking about. What are you up to?"

She shrugs, still smiling, and drops to sit at the edge of the wagon, kicking her feet idly.
"Dust. Bandages. Helping out with little things. Mostly, I am an extra pair of hands in the wagons."
"Ah."
"Mhm."
You scratch at your hair guiltily.
"I would do the same, yes? But I-"

"I could... probably fit in a wagon."
"You and what else?"

You roll your hand around your wrist, flopping it around to cut her off.
"Yes, yes. You are behaving then?"
She blinks, once, twice- Then she turns to face the fron of the caravan, then back to you.
"Did you come because-"

"Yes?"
"You thought I had done something!"
"In my defence, you usually do something."
"I do not!"
"You had adventures playing betting games on which cup was laced with what dust."

"That was a game!"
"You laced all the cups with sleeping dust."
"They guessed wrong. And one of them was laced with healing dust."
"Which one?"

"Mine, of course."

You stare her down for a moment, but the moth is immune, a proud smile writ all over her face.

"Beside, Georg thanked me."
"He has trouble sleeping, yes."
"I helped!" She states proudly.

You groan.

We are a guard, and we protect wagons, protect wagons, protect wagons.

>>
>>40374703
Isn't the first option telling Nin to check the commotion while we stay and guard?
I think that's what most people read it as.
>>
>>40374620
>>Well, if you're mostly out of trouble, you can check on the yelling.
>>
>>40374620
>>Well, if you're mostly out of trouble, you can check on the yelling.

Can we bring the moth?
>>
>>40374757
I.. didn't actually. I took it as "Nins not making trouble so "you"(meaning us) have no more trouble to takle care of.
>>
>>40374620
>Well, if you're mostly out of trouble, you can check on the yelling

No captcha, a Starbucks latte is not Ice Cream
>>
>>40374780
That kind of trouble is easy, we can solve it with murder. We sadly cannot solve the nin problem with murder, as that would be wrong.
>>
>>40374780
Switching "you" from Nin to Lyra in the same sentence would be confusing and not something I would expect from ReQM though.
>>
>>40375115
On the other hand it makes no sense for Lyra to send Nin while she herself is currently bored.
>>
>>40374620
>other
Lyra stays put as a guard, Nin goes to check out the commotion and report back.
>>
That was, uh.
That was badly worded.

My bad.

Back and writing!
>>
>>40375466
Well, how was it meant?
>>
>>40373571
Kap cannot be exonerated for that. It could have died quietly and without a fuss. What he did was awful.

>>40373511
I'd say read the first two threads or so of Kobolds see if you like it.

Lizard is really hit or miss for me.
>>
>>40375526
It's because we don't bask enough isn't it. Don't worry, I appreciate your honesty. We need more basking.
>>
>>40375710
We spent several Lizard episodes inside of a crab. I'm getting basking drawbacks lamb :( get us a rock to bask on please.
>>
>>40375736
And now we're going to spend several episodes trying not to die instead of basking ;_; the horror
>>
>>40375526
Now I'm reading the harpy one first (just 2 treads), seems that everybody liked it and kobold brings mixed opinions.

I love lizard quest btw
>>
>>40375526
Meh, there was much more hesitant expectations than there were objections when the handover was announced, at least going by what was expressed in the threads. That said, between the fact that there were several people (before and after Kap's attempt) who expressed interest in trying to continue it, and how the quest supposedly had a terribly bad ending planned for it anyway, I'd say we got about as good of an ending as we could have hoped for. It's just a shame that we couldn't have hoped for happier.

>>40375736
But anon, we don't need the sun and a good rock to bask. Search your heart, and you'll find that the basking was inside us all along.
>>
>>40374634
1)Remember Smokey the bear in Lizards? Well we can do that too.
2)Broken bridges are also powerless in the face of our spider.
>>
>>40375859
>and how the quest supposedly had a terribly bad ending planned for it anyway
IIRC it wasn't that Dr. U specifically planned for bad end, he just made a lot of plans for potentials and Kap took all those notes as book of canon that must be.
>>
You shake your head, locks of hair sweeping side to side.
"Hah. Well, if you're mostly out of trouble, you can check on the yelling, yes."
"Oh? Sure!"
"Mhm."

Nin flares her wings wide as you step out from behind the wagon, catching the fuzzy edge in the the side of the head.
"What?"
"Huh?"
"Hey- What are you-" "I just said-"

You both stare awkwardly at each other, the moth looking confused, you raising an eyebrow. You wave your hands before you both start talking at the same time again, giving you time to start.
"What are you doing, yes?"
"What am I doing? You just asked me to check on the yelling?"
"Wha- No, I am going to check."

She crouches down, antennae bouncing with the movement, even more confused.
"But you just said?"
"I said that I knew you weren't the cause, So I can go look now?"
"No, you said that if I wasn't in trouble, I could go look."

You frown, eyes glancing down at the hand at your chin. Did you say? No. Definitely not.
"I didn't-"

A man sitting in the wagon, firmly pressing corks down to seal bottles of whatever shakes his head, voice raising over yours.
"You did."
"Really?"
"Yup."

Nin chimes in as well.
"You did."
"Um."

She hops easily from her seat to her preferred ride.
"Now that that is settled- Onwards!"
"I am not a horse, yes."
You shrug, heading for the commotion at the head of the caravan.
>>
>>40376075
"Centaurs are half horse, right?"
"What?"
"Centaurs."
"Yes."
"They are half horse."
"Yes." You reply slowly.

"And you're half spider," She follows.
"The other half is not horse."
"But what if-"
"No," You cut her off.

You skitter up the side of the wagon line, back onto the road at the front- There's a few adventurers a few merchant, and even Kenzington standing around and arguing.

In the middle of them all, there is a dead horse.

"Is this what they call beating a dead-"
You clap a hand over Nin's mouth in a heartbeat, muffling her atrocious sense of humour, though her eyes still sparkle with happiness and pride.

Nah, she's gonna get a new batch sooner or later.
Especially since the first one moved out in the world and didn't take up much space in the forest.

Not in the next few years, but in a decade or so definitly.
>>
>>40376782
Never trust a moth, they are evil.
>>
While you are unbelievably innocuous for a massive spider person, you don't make a habit of intruding into peoples affairs.

Not directly anyway.

You snatch the sleeve of a rather bored looking woman leaning idly against the wagon, watching the whole process uninterestedly.

"Good afternoon, yes?"
"Oh- uh. uh. Hi. Hello."
You nod, smiling carefully.

By carefully, you mean that your fangs are not visible.
Sometimes, it is hard to speak with people. Squishy human people, anyway.

"Could you tell me what happened, if it is not too much trouble?"
The lady is simply gaping openly at your eyes- and you can feel Nin sidling, glaring right back at the woman. She always gets a little... terse with people who she feels don't 'treat you right'.
You've had a few arguments about being polite. Which always boil down to 'They aren't so why should I?'.

And not being her mother 'Cause I said so' doesn't hold much sway with her.
Oh well.

"The horse, miss?" You persist.

"Horse- Oh! The horse. Yeah. It just, uh. It fell over."
You blink blankly at her.
"It fell over? That is it."
"Yeah."

You stare back at the argument still ongoing, hands waving over the still flesh of the creature.
It isn't breathing, that's for sure.

"Do... Do horses do that?"
"Not really, no." She answers.

A veritable font of information.

"Thank you."
"You're welcome."

At least manners are automatic. Parents are the same the world over.

Well. You now know the caravan is stopped for a dead horse. A mysterious dead horse, but still a dead horse.
You feel faintly irritated.

Originally, this quest was the one I ran because I didn't have the confidence I'd be able to run the other without experience. And now I'm here, and it's been 10ish months?

I think the concept is very easy to consume- Reincarnation, monsters and monster-people, levels and stock fantasy type stuff. It's a really easy framework to use, and there's enough base to bring in people however you want to do it.

I'm definitely surprised by how many people are running with it now.

Bold, Lizard, Harpy.
>>
>>40378256
I would suggest following his twitter.
>>
>>40378140
They're all really different, to be honest.

Lizard took the reincarnation bit and applied it to an iguana, complete with monster and lizard memories poking at each other. I like the village and culture bit he's put together, and the combat is fun so far- And having the character be the prankster keeps things interesting. The bits with the mushrooms, and messing with other people have all been great.

Snake really focused on the past life thing, both in terms of regrets and vocabulary. The writing really reflected the prior life bit. It swung pretty heavily from depression to comedy and back again. It's a shame he had to drop it.

Kobold built a lot of his own stuff to run with. And the pace isn't remotely comparable, haha! I'm a bit jealous of that. The characters are great, and the plot keeps moving, so I'll keep reading. Nadia is fun to read.

Apparently there's a harpy now, as well? I haven't had time to check it out, but I'll give it a look when I can.

>>40378160
I'd have to go drag up my greentext pitch from an ancient QTG- The text document is on another computer. It involved monstergirls, a shadowrun type setting and a main character who was a tremendous fuckup.
