Stage 79: Diet, Yakuza, and Mercenaries, Oh My.

You've had an interesting turn of events. While recuperating at the beach, you not only had a misguided Yakuza thug shoot at Kiki-hime, you managed to capture a trio of the mercenaries that are working for the Public Security Intelligence Agency – directly for the Ministry of Justice which is in turn, controlled by the Diet. Meaning they're indirectly involved with the people who want Kiki-hime captured and vivisected, or worse. The first was merely typical European pawn, though you now have a phone with which to trace the mysterious Colonel Friedrich Blitzenberg and his mercenaries, but the second issue has proven interesting in two ways. First, their plan was to infiltrate and try and ingratiate themselves with your family, and second, the leader of the three man team can see your true form. Like Chisato, he has the ability to see spirit children – or at least, dragons and dragonnes, because he certainly didn't realize there are a whole lot of nogitsune-born in the area.

Shoko has softened them up a little, but your presence has made this gentleman extremely worried. You brought Yuuhi-chan over – or rather, she simply appeared when you needed her – and she's explained she has the magical ability to curse them into a humdrum, quiet little illusion of life that will keep them out of trouble and erase their memories concerning the Yakuza-Nogitsune Beach party – and more importantly, your family being present at it. Still, you might not want to take such a drastic measure if you don't need to. His impression that they might need to “rescue” Kumatori Kiki from you might be a personal honor situation, or he might be unwittingly working for the members of the Diet involved in the experiments to make a dual-heritages Spirit Child that could operate in two spheres of religious influence, instead of being limited to one.

Of course, if he's willfully working for them, he is in much deeper trouble than merely being held by Yakuza.

Still, he's human, and while Yuuhi-chan's powers are permitted to be used on humans (the dubious benefit of being youkai-born) you don't want to risk her bringing the wrath of the kami if it's unnecessary.

[x] You know, I was just having some fun on the beach with my wife....

Do recall one minor discrepancy with what the Yakuza who tried to shoot Kiki-hime said and the way he tried to shoot her. It's obvious what happened in retrospect though. The mercenaries hired him, the demon-girl – really tough Chinese demon-girl – sneaked the gun in for him. Most likely she replaced whatever was in the original dart with demon essence so she could take control of Kiki-hime. It does make you wonder what was in the original dart though.

Perhaps your letter to Enma-Oh will get an answer and you can ask for the original dart back.

Ha, ha, ha.

You stand up and walk around to his two compatriots, tied to a post inside a small shed attached to the beach house and tourist ship. You study them for a moment, and then wrap your hands about their throats. They look like they're going to tough it out, expecting you to half-choke them out, some basic torture technique like that. Instead you just halt the movement of their blood entirely.

They pass out in seconds.

You start their blood flowing again, but their pulses are sluggish; they'll be out for hours and they;ll wake up with cramps and headaches that would make the worst hangover they've ever had look like a blessing from the kami. The leader is alarmed, aware by their limp arms and the soft sounds of their chins hitting their chests that something has happened. He says nothing, and he struggles only a little. He's got some good instincts, but he's not really meant for dealing with military style interrogation.

Sadly, you're not going to perform a military style interrogation, much less a Yakuza style one.

Having been witness to the interrogation of the two Yakuza, he's probably got a very good idea that you are not someone to be trifled with. You can only hope that he's been paying attention and realizes you're only as cruel and harsh as absolutely necessary. You crouch on the floor in front of him, resting your hands on your knees, feet flat on the ground and tail curled over your head for balance. He keeps his eyes on you though, only glancing at your eyes now and again. Not even your two piece swimsuit seems to be distraction enough – you spot him glancing at the scales along your waist and arms. He is very diligent about not looking you in the eyes too long, or studying your gleaming talons of ruby and sapphire.

“You're a very interesting person....all the more so because I'm pretty sure you're looking at things that you, as a human, shouldn't be able to see.” His eyes meet yours and you smile slowly. “Tell me what you're seeing, why don't you? It might help us get to know each other a little better. Make things easier for us both, even.”

“I'm looking at a young woman whose involved in a Yakuza terrorist group.” Your smile fades. “Ryuu Ryukusa, age nineteen, graduate on paper from Celestial High School, no higher education. Wanted in connection with the kidnapping and ransom of Kumatori Kiki and her younger sister Kiku.” Boy have they got that all wrong. Well, except for the kidnapping, but that's on a technicality. “You're in some very serious trouble, little girl.” Interesting, he doesn't believe the kidnapping and ransom story, but that's the story they're telling him to believe, so he's acting on it. Oh, he believes the Yakuza thing too, which is almost flattering.

To his credit, be manages to both look you in the eye the entire time and make it sound like he's the one who has you at a disadvantage.

“You know, I was just here, spending my time with some friends and my wife on the beach, and then someone tries to shoot her full of demon essence, and then these strange guys who aren't Yakuza and aren't nogitsune-born spirit-children come along and try and infiltrate my little get together.” Again, he manages to keep his cool, but Water Eyes tells you he's utterly at a loss about the nogitsune-born – he has no idea what you are talking about. “Ah, so that's why you thought you could manage to sneak in. You didn't know about the foxes.” Yes, utterly lost, but very alarmed now. “

You drop into a seiza position and let your tail curl out behind you, lashing it slowly back and forth. Placing both hands on your thighs – that does draw his eyes, he's working very hard not to let your tail distract him but your claws are just too obvious a threat as well as eye-catching – you lean forward, staring into his eyes with your draconic sapphire ones. “I don't think you're a seer or a sorcerer – you wouldn't have gotten within a hundred yards of this beach of you were either of those. You're not a spirit-child of any sort. Tell me exactly what you're seeing when you look at me, and I'll tell you what your superiors aren't telling you.” He grits his teeth, irritated that you've discerned that much of his situation with so little. “Your superiors are spinning an interesting and falsified tale – you figured that out for yourself. So, I'm going to tell you the truth, if you'll tell me the truth. It's only fair, after all.”

The investigator – senior investigator – furrows his brow, caught between his instinctive and inborn desire to know the truth, and his loyalty to the PSIA. It wouldn't take much to tip the scales now....

[+] You see just enough to get in trouble, but not enough to avoid it or escape it. But who knows, maybe we could fix that...

Letting your smile fade you look at him very seriously. “When I told you that you were the only humans on the beach, I wasn't making a joke.” He looks up at you, doubtfully. “There are only three kinds of people on this beach. Yakuza, spirit-children, and you three. But you can't see that. You only see that I'm not human, and probably, if I'm guessing right, only part of my family as well.” If he's only seeing dragons and dragonnes, that would explain what Shoko-san didn't notice that he was seeing anything strange – with her, he wasn't. “Despite what you are seeing and what you have been told, I'm not interested in hurting you or your friends. You're just doing your jobs.”

The hesitance is still there and you can see you're getting through to him, but that human stubbornness is getting in your way. “What you see can get you into serious trouble....but it's not the only thing that can get you into to trouble. Worse, you have no way of getting out of the trouble it can get you into.” You lean closer whispering softly. “I am offering you the chance to see more, and more importantly, to protect yourself and other humans from what you cannot see that can harm you. What you don't know can get you cursed. Death is the easy way out, when you are seeing the real world.”

It's the 'other humans' part that does it. He's the kind of man that took his job so he could help his fellow man. He is, at heart, a basically good person, and that works in your favor as well as his.

Taking a deep breath he lets his eyes wander over you – all over you. “I'm looking at a young woman, with midnight blue hair, long horns that curve along the back of your head and then up-sweep....they have tiny ridges cut into them, and they look like sapphire. If I'm seeings things right, half of your hand is made of out sapphire on the left, and ruby on the right. You've got some scales along your cheeks, ribs, and thighs, as well as long your arms. You have....a furred tale with fins at the end. You look like a half dragon person, except your eyes are sapphire blue and look like dragons eyes entirely.”

“Well, you're seeing everything exactly right. But you don't see anything different about the four people over there?” You indicate Shoko-san, Yuuhi-chan, Peta-chan, and Chi-chan.

“Aside from the really tall girl with the ridiculously cute voice, they are all perfectly normal....” Your look makes his expression falter. “What am I not seeing, Ryuu-san?”

“Ryukusa is fine. What you aren't seeing is the half-fox spirits, two of them, and the half oni. The last of them would have red eyes, but she's otherwise human. I am impressed that your eyes haven't changed color. But as you can't see, your eyes aren't seeing much of anything except what your bosses want you to see.” You sit up and glance at the others. “I'll let you guess at which is which. But since everyone on the beach is either Yakuza, part of my family, or a half-fox person, you stood out like a sore thumb with your lack of tattoos and fuzzy ears.”

“You mean fox spirits like kitsune?” he asks doubtfully.

He looks at you suspiciously. “What do I have a choice in?”

You crouch once more, fast enough that he jerks back and hits his head against the post he's tied to. You gaze at him coolly. “Everything. Dragons never come out of their heavens often, but their children are powerful. The children of gods exist too, and they're even scarier than I am.” He stands up slowly, warily, watching you with a great deal of trepidation. “But the key part is ~you can't protect yourself~. Not without help. So, you need to decide....take my help and see the real world in it's glory and danger, or turn away and forget any of this ever happened.”

“Red pill or blue pill, huh? Does that make you Morpheus?” He kind of smirks.

“No, I'm the Oracle. It's your choice, but I'm letting you know as you are you won't be capable of taking on something like me and surviving; and even with help it could be disastrous for you. I'm offering you help and a good chance to survive, or the chance to walk away safe and sound, no memories of any of this, and no worries about your bosses fuckin' up your life either.” You drop the barrier and look at him calmly. “Morpheus didn't give Neo informed consent. I'm being fair – because I could easily take away your choices if I wanted to.”

You'd pay a heavy price for it, sure, but you could. He doesn't need to know that part.

He looks at you seriously and then at his subordinates. “They're out of this. They're going to forget all of this. They're young and they didn't see what you saw, so they're humans who just got caught up in something they weren't meant to see. They'll go back to their lives, a little lost and confused, but unhurt.” You take a deep breath. “So make a choice. But if I help you, I'd like some help in return. If you want to see the real world and take your chances, I can let you do that too....but then you're on your own. You'll be safer, but alone.”

Frowning he looks at the quartet of your friends and family. You can see him straining, wanting to see past the veil. Curious, smart, and good hearted. A pretty awesome combo for an average person. You flip your hair back, cleaning the sand and dust from the shed out of it with a little water and wind, and his eyes widen. Yeah, that might be cheating just a little.

“Oh, but before you make your choice....I did say I'd tell you the truth.” You explain the Hojo Group's involvement with certain members of the Diet, how they want Kiki-hime's blood or body to make supernatural warriors to use as soldiers in various countries, how they hired you as her bodyguard as a cover, and how another country's military is involved....everything that his particular branch of the government might like to hear about without revealing more than is necessary. The truth he can deal with. “If I give you the help you need though....I'm going to ask you for help in return, and it will be help that I need to protect Japan.”

He stares at you, and frowns. “That sounds like something the Yakuza would start of with....”

[+] On, Giri, Gimu: You incur debt, and it is paid, whether you like it or not!

You shrug. “If course I'm a thug. I'm hanging out with the children of murderous tricksters and the Yakuza.” You tuck your hands behind your back and lean forward, your eyes fixed on his, though his shoot a little lower before meeting yours. Heh. “But I'm the kind of thug who beats up the people messing with the old man's noodle cart and doesn't ask for anything more than a cowl of noodles if he can spare it. I'm the kind of thug who doesn't let other thugs beat up the people who don't deserve it.”

You stand up and step closer, making him very nervous. “And most importantly, I'm the thug that didn't kill your kohai and force you to make the choice without telling you what choices you had to begin with, detective-san. This is the real world you're dealing with, and the price we pay for the things we do are set in Stone, Water, Wood, Fire and Void. The debt collectors are the kami, and not even the daughter of Susano-Oh could avoid paying her debt when it was called due – I was there, I would know.”

Stars burst across your vision and you pinch the bridge of your nose tightly.

>The sepulcher thrums as the hideous half-dead sorcerer rises to his full height, towering over you and the young man you stand in front of. “You will pay for your effrontery with your life, foolish child!” You slam your tail into a statue and grab the shard of stone that breaks off, ignoring the deep cut it left in your tail. The ghastly yellow-blue light becomes brighter as whatever unholy abomination he's summoned from the depths oozes closer. The boy quails, but you gaze at the monstrous thing standing atop the crypt. “Sorry, my credit card is maxed out,” you mutter before hurling the snapped off stonework blade from the statue through the sorcerer's head, killing the burning green hell-lights of his eyes and causing the weird glow to recede back into the unplumbed depths.

You shake your head, and look into the concerned face of detective-san. “That's the deal, oji-san. Take it, leave it, or deal with it.” Your head throbs dully, and you're exhausted. Still, you look at him with steel in your eyes and fire in your heart, not letting him see the creeping exhaustion.

“All right. I'll take the help. It sounds like there's a lot going on, and I want to get to the bottom of it all.” He takes a deep breath, clearly expecting you to do something.

“Okay. Stay here.” You turn and walk out, then remember something. Turning back you hang on the fence. “Oh, are you married? Got kids?” Girlfriend?”

He looks confused and then smirks again. “Only to my work. Why do you ask, oujo-san?”

“Because the leader of the nogitsune-born has a weird sense of humor, and she'll like, stick you with a schoolgirl or something.”

His smirk fades as he realizes you're completely serious. “Hey, exactly-”
>>
>>40349449
“Just stay here.” You walk over to your companions as he checks on his and unties them. “Yuuhi-chan, get the two younger humans lost. Peta-chan, the older human is on our side now. Can you hook him up with a cute, shy, somewhat friendly sort of mystic type, someone that will be able to protect him from the shit he's going to be seeing and that he can protect from the humans?” Yeah, so you lied about who had the weird sense of humor.

Shoko-san is looking at you oddly. “You're making him part of the clan?”

“Sort of. I need that in to the PSIA. He could be invaluable, not just for dealing with the Diet and the foreigners, but because if we can convince him that there's a major threat of some sort before I take on the mantle I was born for, then we could have the government actually working for us instead of against us for a change.”

Yuuhi-chan's ears perk up and she swishes her tail excitedly, and Chisato looks interested. “Now, that's an idea. I think i'll keep that one to myself. No reason to let the bosses know I got someone in the PSIA in my pocket.” You nod shortly, and Shoko shrugs.

Peta-chan puts two fingers in her mouth and doesn't whistle; a moment later a slim young nogitsune-child walks around the building, her eyes bright and curious, but her manner otherwise subdued. Yuuhi-chan and Shoko-san go to explain what will happen to them, while Peta-chan imperiously gestures with her fox-signs at the delicate youkai-born, who blushes, bows deeply, and goes to introduce herself to her new companion. Chisato smirks and shakes her head. “You're evil, Aoi-chan.”

[X] It's only a little evil of a special kind, the kind that makes people happy.

“More evil than the bundle of cuteness that is Peta-chan? I don't think so.” Peta-chan nods agreeably, and lifts her arms up, demanding Chi-chan hold her. “Besides, it's only evil if I'm doing it out of malice. I figure it's such a cliché situation that they'll run into a cliché situation and be able to deal with it better.”

Chi-chan looks at you dubiously. “That makes no fuckin' sense, Aoi-chan,” she replies as she picks up her owner who winks at you with her one visible eye.

“Call it canceling a karmic debt before it's incurred, if it makes you feel better. I figure it happens so often it must have some kind of overarching meaning.” Hinata-hakase and Kiku-chan explained about manga being used to remind people of the ancient youkai and kami; it would make sense if there was some kind of archetypal story there. You'll have to ask Akari-niji-chan, she reads more manga than you do. “Besides, he's the kind of guy who needs to protect a cute girl – you didn't mind when I did it to you, right?”

That Chisato does understand and she grins. “Well, fuckin' 'ay, you got him nailed that close, huh?”

“It's what I do, Chi-chan. Shoko-san may be a sweet-talker, but I'm the one who makes the devil consider hiring me to do his dirty work.” Rather literally, now that you think about it. Your heart feels sluggish and your blood is moving thick and slow. “I need to get back to my family, Chi-chan, I've been away too long. Not that I don't trust your people, but I need the TLC.”

“I'll take care of the rest of this. I'll talk to the spy and see if we can't work out something nice together.” She grins wickedly.

“No threats, no threating his subordinates, I promised. Treat him fair, he's one of us now.” You crouch, resting your hands on the ground, your head starting to throb heavily.

“Sure, Aoi-chan I got....hey, are you okay?” Chi-chan walks over and couches next to you, looking at you with real concern.

[X] Go on, Chi-chan, I'll be okay.
[X] Just need to be with my family a while, I'll be okay then.
[+] Just some back issues to clarify with my folk, you know?

You smile wanly and gesture mildly to Chi-chan, a Clan Ryo gesture made absently. “I'll be all right, Chi-chan, I just need to spend time with my family. They make everything better. You can go on. I'll be all right; thank you for the concern.” You force yourself upright, and take a deep breath, using your power to make your blood to move faster and increasing your heart-rate. It eases the headache too, which is a bonus. “There, no problem at....” You and Chi-chan both turn to look at Yuuhi-chan, who is standing outside the shed and staring at you, her tail looking like someone stuck a porcupine to her ass and her ears laid flat along her head. She bolts around the building like someone set her on fire. “....all. Okay, that was different.”

“Uhhh, does your fox-chick do that often, Aoi-chan?” Peta-chan is looking at you calmly as Chi-chan and you stare after Yuuhi. “'Cause, that was kinda....” Even as she speaks, Yuuhi-chan runs around the building at full speed, carrying a large bucket filled with sea water. Which she immediately dashes at you, on her way past, moving too fast to slow down suddenly in the soft sand, though it's clear she's planning to stop as soon as she can without tripping.

[] ….okay, you can play along this once.
[] Halt the water before it hits you, and politely inquire as to her thought process on this matter.
[] It's Yuuhi-chan, she's doing it for a reason. Maybe not a SANE reason....
[] Dodge with great alacrity and skill.
[] Wait, what?

[X] ….okay, you can play along this once.
[X] It's Yuuhi-chan, she's doing it for a reason. Maybe not a SANE reason....

You stand there and let the water splash across you, only closing your eyes for the brief instant the water impacts your face. Chi-chan stumbles back, caught in the back-splash, and yelps at the cold water; Peta is looking about as shocked as you've ever seen her, her robes spotted with the water you've just been doused with. Yuuhi-chan slows to a jog, and circles back to you, before coming to a halt.

On the other hand your heart is immediately racing, your head is crystal clear, and your blood is surging through your veins. Pulling back the power you'd used to get things moving normally, your body settles down almost at once. Yuuhi-chan, panting softly, looks at you worriedly and asks a question that from anyone else would prompt immediate confusion and worry.

“Are the demons gone, aniki?”

From her, it just prompts worry.

“Yes, Yuuhi-chan, thank you. Could you please explain exactly what demons, and what they were doing?” While you let the salt water drip from your body and hair naturally, you do assist Chisato and Peta by drying both of them off.

“The ones trying to make you sleep so they could steal you away in your dreams, aniki. Didn't you see them?” She looks at you and then at Chi-chan and Peta....the latter of whom nods solemnly. “Oh good I thought I was just seeing things, and then aniki would have been all wet, and all mad, and all wet AND mad all at the same time, and then I might have gotten yelled at and anighiphlspnkmph.”
>>
>>40351696
Your gentle hand over her mouth stills her after she finishes whatever she was saying. You look at her calmly and she looks back, concern in her glowing red eyes. “I'm all right, now. You did perfectly, Yuuhi-chan, thank you.”

Taking your hand from her mouth, Yuuhi positively beams at you, pleased to be praised for her quick, if somewhat erratic thinking.

“So, Chi-chan, I'm fine, and if you don't mind, I'll be heading back to our camp.” Chi-chan nods, a little bemused at the strange turn the day has taken, and Peta pets Yuuhi-chan on the head, making her tail swish slowly back and forth. “Shoko-san, we're headed back now.” She nods, and taps her wrist and holds up three fingers; she'll be back shortly. The pretty Gothic nogitsune-girl is bowing to the rather wide eyed and confused detective-san, her shawl shifting faintly into winglike shapes that you can only see as unusual wings out of the corner of your eye.

Chi-chan swats your derrière hard as she goes to join the new member of your clans, and you yelp – mostly for effect since it didn't hurt at all. You are forced to immediately grab Yuuhi-chan to prevent her from slicing the totally unaware Chisato in half though, which prompts an explanation that the human hand can't injure you at all, and Chi-chan is allowed to hit you since it's only playing. She accepts the lecture most seriously and immediately forgets it as you and she walk down the beach, her attention immediately drawn by any number of things: particularly pretty shells, intricate tattoos, the kites totally amaze her, and at one point she drags you over to admire a sandcastle. You suspect that she'll remember despite that, her strange mind seeming to waver between realities in a much more fundamental way than the minds of most spirit-children.
>>
>>40351782
You indulge the cute, but you make sure that you are consistently headed towards your camp, where you see Yui-niji-chan and Kiku-chan have set up a small fire pit, and are roasting freshly caught fish. Kiki-hime and Jinyuu-onee-sama are preparing freshly opened melon, and Er Yin is sitting calmly, her jacket off her shoulders as she basks in the sunshine. Akari-niji-chan is back, looking unharmed and smiling that stoic, polite smile as she helps Inau-san prepare sushi and sashimi with the rice and seaweed that was packed earlier.

Yuuhi-chan takes your hand and starts dragging you towards the camp, and you can't help but smile, her excited exclamation at the return of your niji-chan prompting more breathless run-on sentences from the nogitsune-child. But it is the smiles on the faces of your family – safe, protected, and strong, that really makes your Pearl shine.

Thanks for running. We need to talk to our family about what happened before we hurt one of them like we almost did to akari. If it was kiki she might have been hurt pretty badly.
>>
Thank you for reading and playing. We now return to our regularly scheduled beach party.

To answer a question asked last thread: Kiki-hime's Wood Eyes and understanding won't really help with Ryukusa's learning and understanding of how to deal with her demigod nature; she will be able to guide or direct Ryukusa into becoming more or less of a specific "kind" of demigod nature, but she would not have an understanding of what it means to BE a demigod, only how Ryukusa could direct her energies to achieve one or another state of demigod-ness. She can see the paths through the maze and where they lead, but can't perceive the maze itself.

Thanks for writing

If you have time for some more question: who are the "bosses" Chisato mentioned?

We did promise to make her the most powerful woman of Japan's underworld, after all.
>>
>>40352056
Are the demons Yuuhi saw related you the time we spent in the other world as well? it kind of feels that way.
>>
>>40352126
Chisato is very powerful, but she's still only 'middle management' as it were. She does habve absolute control over her teritory, but she does have a few people she answers to still. On the other hand, you've taken some very strong steps towards makign her exceedingly powerful in the underworld, by giving her access to the spiritual world as well as gaining her an ally inside the PSIA, which concerns itself with both internal and external criminal enterprises that can harm Japan - including the more powerful Yakuza groups.

It cost Ryukuza most of her good stuff, but she's not into bad stuff ATM, only suffering from previous bad stuff. Right now, she's at Zero, or neutral luck/incidents.

>>40352138
No, they aren't. The flashback was unrelated, but made her vulnerable to the influence (as she had just burned her good stuff acquiring a major ally).

No - it was because you were carrying good stuff that you were able to convince her to leave without any real incident. You get actual returns on stuff expenditures (allies, weapons, toys, family members reviving gifts, etc.).

Heavy duty spoiler.

When you overspend, you go into bad stuff for a while, which burns off 'naturally' (injuries, enemies showing up, diplomacy going badly for examples). There isn't very much of a way to tell where it lies except by how lucky or unlucky Ryukusa seems to be at any given time, and I will not give you any actual total. When the players want something important, they let me know (such as the PSIA agent as an effective ally, or moving Inau-san into Inau-chan territory, for examples). The bigger the impact something has, the more stuff gets spent, the more likely you are to slip towards bad stuff. The worse the problem you deal with during a bad stuff moment, the bigger the return of good stuff is, or the more impact the results of your efforts will be if you don't get good stuff (e.g. starting with bad stuff and then defeating Hauko as an enemy didn't give you good stuff, because you changed him from enemy into a neutral party instead, leaving you at Zero Stuff but giving yourself more than one potential ally later since you were able to befriend his harem. If you'd killed him, you could have gained good stuff and bought more toys/allies/tools later, but you wouldn't have his harem as allies as you do now, nor could they remain effective enemies.) It seems arbitrary because it is somewhat arbitrary - the overarching goal overrides common sense and logic at times.

That should make things clear as mud.
