Your name is Thomas Cairn, and you have no clue what you jumped into. Your dad was an infamous superhero known as The Red Rider, and he showed up dead in an alley about three months ago. When you were checking out a storage unit you inherited from him, everything changed. You gained his powers, a brain able to calculate faster than light, and an uncanny affinity for machinery.

Using your powers, you were easily able to get into the world's top engineering college, Central Cosmopolis Institute. But just as you were ready to leave everything behind in your hometown, Comet City, and move on, one of your dad's "co-workers" stopped by. He had an envelope from your dad, inside was the key to a safehouse in Cosmopolis, and a letter from The Red Rider.

The letter told you many things, including the existence of the murderer, Menace, a supervillain with unknown abilities. It also led you to you dad's lab/safehouse, where you passed copies of his notes on Menace to Mr. Salvos. You spent the last two weeks researching, working and taking yoga lessons with your friends to control your mental instability.

>Ah, you're right, I see.

You also spent those two weeks before college tinkering. You were thinking about the Potential Engine a bit, maybe some upgrades on its design, including using less expensive materials. One day, on a whim, you decided to test those design upgrades. Soldering parts, welding materials, finally finding a way to replicate the power source with less nuclear fission. It was a tough road, but you think you have it, only a 40% chance of failure, even less for catastrophic failure. So you flip the switch that will bring your creation to life and...

It works, no fizzle, no nuclear explosion, even though that was a low chance anyway. You just created an infinite power source! Too bad that it can only power a small appliance, too low-yield for any really heavy lifting. But still, a self-powering toaster is pretty neat.

Unfortunately, time flies when you're having fun, the two weeks are up and today is the first day of class. You signed up for...

You thought Cooling would be fun, and it's one of the few things you have trouble learning on your own, it turns out cooking is a product of experience, there is a "feel" to it. The other class you have is Theoretical Physics, and that makes your brain itch, almost as if you're trying to figure out the answer to a question with no real basis. Of course you have the slew of all the other classes you need for your degree, even if you did test out of most of them. The first class of the day is Cooking, and you want to be sure to get there early and make a good impression on Mr. Armstrong, he seems like the kind of guy who finds that important.

You make it to class with 5 minutes to spare, and start to set up at a station, Mr. Armstrong seems to be writing on the board, but you can't quite make it out with him in the way. The rest of the class starts to file in, and a guy with black hair and a rather dumb-looking bowtie sits next to you.

"Hello class, I am Mr. Armstrong, and I teach cooking. Cooking is a metaphor for life, no matter how much you think you know about it, it still takes a certain talent to excel. First lesson, eggs, the simplest food you can make. That and I want breakfast."

"Damn this taste good, how did you make it taste so good?"
>>
You know a bit about eggs, they really are the simplest food you could cook, not to mention you did quite a bit of research before class so the info is still fresh in your head. Crack, split, pour, season, fry, not hard in the least, but it seems your neighbor is having trouble with it. He keeps getting eggshells in his and he doesn't seem to notice. By the time you're done frying your egg over easy, his looks more like scrambled eggs.

"Okay, everyone take your egg to the front of the class.", Mr. Armstrong sighs, obviously not expecting much. He goes down the line, tasting each egg with a silver fork, occasionally giving out advice. Finally he reaches yours, "Pretty good, nice seasoning, a good fry on the bottom, and the yolk isn't hard. Only suggestion is to spread it out a bit less."

You breathe out a sigh of relief as he goes to your neighbors egg, "There are quite a few problems with this ABOMINATION OF AN EGG! You have more shells than egg on this plate, and you maimed it so hard that its mother wouldn't recognize it! What is your name." he says, gesturing at the terrified student.

"Uh, Jack sir, Jack Enrique", the frightened kid mumbles back at the behemoth staring him down.

"Well Jack, one thing to remember about cooking, it takes experience, which you obviously don't have, that's why you are in this class. It's fine, as the saying goes, can't fret over every egg." Wow, that was legitimately terrifying, and confusing. The bell rings soon afterwards and everyone files out to the next class. Until lunch, everything goes rather simply. You go over and sit down next to Harry and the girls.

"So, we were going to go to the SilverStreak concert tonight, wanna come, I've got tickets." Jen teases.

"Of course!" Even if you aren't exactly underground in your music tastes, you still like SilverStreak. Rumor has it that the lead singer moonlights as a Super, but that's unconfirmed.

"Great, here's your ticket, don't lose it. How were your classes?" You regale her with the tale of the guy with the weird bowtie who made AN ABOMINATION. Why did your mind just yell that, at least it isn't mixing up phrases. You did just get that patent sent in, that means your Micro-Actuators are patent-pending. Maybe you should show them, they are pretty cool.

"Helloooooo, Earth to Thomas, come in." You must have been lost in thought, Monica is snapping her fingers in front of your face,

"Huh, sorry, what?"

"I asked what you were working on yesterday.", Harry says, that is a good question, you were spending more time at your lab, and you told him you were working on something.

"He's out of it again." Harry sighs

"Yeah, I'm making a nuclear oven, you caught me. But seriously, my car is a piece of junk so I have to repair it sometimes."

"Well, tell me when you get to work on that nuclear oven, I want to make radioactive chicken.", he laughs, nice save, maybe you should tell them later.

After a nutritious lunch, everyone goes to their next classes, for you that's Theoretical Physics. You might be able to finally figure out something about the PE. It operates on theoretical stuff already, not to mention you are using gravity as a power source. If you really buckle down, you might even find a way to make it into a generator.

Your mind reeling from the possibilities, you head to class. You sit next to... somebody, you're too focused on the massive equation up on the board. It seems to, crazily enough, apply to the Engine, it is the surface equation for power production, rather impressive to look at, but really just a means to determine output power. It is rather coincidental that the equation is on the board.

"Hello students, I am Ms. Debarr, and prepare for one of the most confusing and possibly incorrect class at the school." You were so focused on the board that you didn't notice an almost comically short woman walk up in front of the class.

"Open your book to Page 121."

You open the book and look down while mentally crunching numbers, and pretend to pay attention to class. Add a fan near the exhaust, reroute power back to the exterior supports... that should work.

"Okay." Well, can't go back now, you just called out the teacher. You walk up to the board and start erasing the parts that are wrong. You start with just a few parts, then whittle away a bit more that you realize is wrong, and a bit more. Like chipping a coat of paint off the wall of truth, eventually you have what the teacher got right, the equal signs, and you start to work your way through the equation.

First the basics, no beautiful music is created by a band without first playing the scales, and then the second stage flows forth from the chalk in your hand. You barely even think on what you're writing, you know it's right. This was the one goddamn class you couldn't test out of and you have been studying almost nonstop to get it right. The fucking quiz was notated as a single equation, and you made a single error, changing 100% to 0%. That was then, this is now. One of the perks to Supercomputer brains is that you learn quickly, very quickly. You don't even realize when you cross over from one board to another, and the next, and the next.

Huh, you didn't even get that far in your ideas when you were thinking at the desk. You finally finished it with just one small bit of space left. You drop the stub of chalk, formerly a full stick.

"Fixed it." If you had to answer what a shit-eating grin felt like, you would tell this story. You calmly walk back to your seat and check the time. That took 30 minutes, but the look on Ms. One-Question's face is so worth every nanosecond.

The rest of the day is pretty dull after that, and you get back to your dorm at 3:00PM. You have 7 hours until the concert

You get into a stance that they taught you in yoga class and let go, trying to release your anger and excitement and happiness and... you can't. You used that spite to complete your equation, and it won't let go right now. You start thinking about what happened in Cooking, what if you could stop that primal rage, spite, fear, temporarily. Brainwaves are extremely complex, but some must control the "unsavory" emotions. Maybe something to think on.

You take yourself out of the stance dejectedly, you are still angry even if you don't want to be, maybe that has to do with your power, maybe aggravating those parts of your brain increases IQ. Anyway, that took an hour, but maybe you could keep your mind off this by working on something.

That little moment of genius was definitely recorded, you saw the phones out, maybe you should check that out. You log on to Youtube and search up the Math tab in the last six hours. Sure enough you get a video of the class today, with expert commentary such as "Dude, this is fucking insane, is this the real professor and the lady's faking?" You check the comments, and most are just "wow", but one of the most popular comments is "Maybe he's a Super." and that gets you a little bit. Then you check the responses, the most common one is "Only one who could do that was The Red Rider, and he's been missing for months." There are 500,000 views on this video alone, how, you don't know.

Well that's kinda unnerving, but no matter, the lab is calling you, and she sings like a siren. You climb into your old beater and head for your dad's lab. You pass a few people on the streets here and there who seem rather shady, but this is the inner city you're going to, so no surprise there. You unlock the door with a beep and head in, then bring up the pictures of the equation on your phone.

Time to get to work.

Just move this wire here, clip this... there we go, should produce more than enough power now. And to think it only took 2 hours to retrofit your old one. It is definitely a prototype, it looks like an engine with wires everywhere. Guess that means there's only one thing to do.

You flick the switch and...

Nothing.

"OH WHAT THE-", your swears are interrupted by a blinding flash of light and a noise akin to the heavens being rent asunder. You shoot backwards and hit the wall with a crack. Then the light flickers and dies, leaving in the place of the PE a single glowing orange cylinder. You get some tongs and gloves and place it in the analyzer.

"Unknown material, Output power of 10,000 megawatts, unsafe to touch with bare hands." Did it just say 10,000 megawatts! That's three times the output of Hoover Dam! You just created something new and you don't even know how.

Your mind wanders back to the comments on that video that said The Red Rider has been gone for months. Your dad wouldn't want that, ever, maybe you should do something about it. This makes that possible, you get to work immediately on the plans for a suit of armor powered by this new element. No... this is Cairnsium, you made it, you name it. Opening up a computer, you set to work at finding parts and drawing up the plans. With the rate you invent things, you make sure to make a modular design, that way you can fit the more practical ones into it. Altogether, it should take at least a month, and the parts cost $36,700.

Coming out of the trance you were in, you realize the time 8:00PM. You have two hours to get to the concert. You put the Cairnsium into "The Boom Room" as it was labeled and lock it in with as many encryption codes as you can. Then you get in your car and drive off. You briefly stop at SuperBurger to get some cheap food, then drive to the concert. It's out in Crux Park, so you make it about 30 minutes early and find your friends.

how bout if we research 3 things in one thread we get a tech point so if research 6 things we would get 2 points that thread and we would have to do it all over again in the next thread

this will also prevent us from spending all our time researching since we have social obligations as well as the possibility of breakdowns
