You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force!

When you landed at Lviv, you figured that things didn't look as bad as they seemed. Sure, the streets were practically empty save for roving police patrols due to emergency curfews, and the airport was closed to all but military and aid flights. You didn't even get a good chance look at the city. The moment you stepped off the transport, you were all immediately hustled off to a fleet of waiting chinooks, these ones bearing the emblem of the United Nations rather than the USAF.

However, the the situation quickly changed as you flew further east. Below, you could see the roads choked with countless vehicles and bodies as refugees fled west to escape the nuclear holocaust. You felt helpless having to see things from above.

"How horrible..." Janice mutters as she looks out the small viewport.

"It just never ends." Red adds in.

"And these are just the people fit enough to move." Tarin mutters. "It's going to be worse when we get to Poltava."

"You're most likely right, Tarin." You sigh. You've seen the aftermath of enough large scale natural disasters to know that things would only be worse. The rest of your squadron stays silent, the sound of the Chinook's twin rotors being the only sound that you hear.

It's only a few hours later that you finally arrive in Poltava, and what you see is chaos.

As a stark contrast to the quiet, relatively orderly cities in the west, Poltava looked like a major disaster zone, despite the fact that it was fairly far from the actual nuclear explosions. Fires and thick columns of smoke raged across the city as people rioted in the streets. The people down there could be rioting for any number of reasons, but the root of it was that everybody was scared. If their eastern neighbors had the Bomb dropped on them, what's stopping them from being next?

The Chinook flies over the ailing city, and you could see people waving at you with flailing arms and makeshift flags in a vain attempt to be evacuated by air. You look at both the pilots and the air crew, and could see that they don't even react at all. No doubt they've flown this route multiple times already, and had extremely strict orders not to stop. The Chinook continues on, ignoring the chaos below and heading towards the one of the few parts of the city not overrun by riots, being guarded by what was left of Poltava's police as well as UN peacekeepers. The Chinook then touches down at a makeshift helipad, where you're quickly ushered out by more UN staff.

"Captain Pierce, I presume?" A UN officer dashes up to you, one hand on his bright blue beret to keep it from being blown away from the Chinook's rotor wash.

"That's me." You nod.

"Follow me!" He waves. "My men will escort your squadron to a rest area, but I'm afraid our commander wants to speak with you first!"

You nod as you and Janice follow the officer to a hastily set up mobile command center, where more UN officers were hastily operating a multitude of phones and radio equipment in a vain effort to coordinate relief efforts.

"Captain Pierce." A large, dark skinned, extremely muscular man steps forward. "I am Colonel Utabe, in charge of the UN relief efforts here."

"Colonel." You salute. "What can we do here?"

"Everything, honestly." Utabe sighs and visibly sags. "I would ask you to rest first, but the calls for help are too many and our manpower is too few."

"Where do you need us?"

"Here." Utabe points to a map on the table. "Kharkiv is one of the impact sites. The majority of the civilians there have already been evacuated or killed at this point, but we're still recieving scattered reports of survivors still trapped there."

"Just tell us where to go, then." You say.

"There are three areas that have caught our interest." Utabe circles three areas around the city. "We have reports that many of Kharkiv's city officials, as well as a number of civilians, have taken shelter in an emergency shelter underneath their city hall. They could be crucial to bringing back order to this region. To the east, there's a witch hold that belongs to the Ukranian Coven. Last we heard, there were a handful of witches and personnel there, but we've had no contact. The hold's walls should be thick enough to protect from the blast and the radiation, but we just don't know. Finally, we have scattered reports that there's a Ukrainian border patrol stranded on the Russian side of the border. They claim they're being chased by Russian forces, but we cannot verify it."

1. Border patrol might be killed or captured soon.

"Sounds like the border is right up our alley." You say. "We've done our share of extractions under fire."

"I'm sure you have." Utabe nods. "Be warned, you will be practically on top of ground zero there, so radiation protection is required."

"I suppose you have the proper equipment?" You ask.

"Of course." Utabe nods. "We'll provide you with NBC suits. But be warned, being that close to the impact site, you won't be able to stay there for long. Between the radiation and the Russians, I'm surprised that patrol is still alive, honestly."

"And I suppose you have transportation ready?" You ask, glancing at the assorted helicopters on the helipad.

"We do." Utabe nods and points over the gathered aircraft. "We made sure to bring over American-made craft, to minimize any issues. We have the standard Blackhawks and Chinooks if you want something a little larger."

"What's that?" You ask, pointing a third, even larger craft that looked to be what happened if you smashed a Chinook and C-130 together.

"Ah, that's one of our newer vehicles, the V-22." Utabe grins. "As fast as a plane with the VTOL capability of a helicopter. A very capable craft, but it's still new so there might be a few... kinks we haven't found yet."

"If it's as fast as you say, the V-22 is right up our alley." You nod. "If we're going to have to fly all the way out to the border then speed is what we'll need."

"I'll sign one out for you." Utabe nods. "Are you sure your pilot can handle it?"

"My pilot is one of the best. He can fly practically anything." You assure him.

"He's not lying." Janice adds helpfully.

"Regardless, you should have him familiarize himself with the controls, at least. It will take some time for us to get it ready to fly. In the meantime, you should get some rest." Utabe says and points to a large tent structure. "That is our temporary barracks. You may rest there if you want. However, if you wish to take a look closer look at the V-22 or assist at the field hospital, I won't complain. We can use every bit of help we can get."

You decide to go inspect the the Osprey. After all, it was a new machine. You've heard it was already being deployed limited numbers in the US armed forces right now, but the idea was for it to completely replace Chinooks and Sea Knights.

There were also the troubling rumors that the craft was inherently dangerous and practically a deathtrap, but most of the stories you mainly heard through hearsay and "friend of a friend" type of stories.

As you approach the alien-looking craft, you could see Bullseye already in the pilot seat, messing with the controls.

"Having fun, Bullseye?" You ask.

"Holy shit, you have no idea." Bullseye smiles. "I always wanted to fly these things when I first heard about them!"

"Despite the stories?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Pffffft, if we pussed out every time an experimental vehicle crashed we'd never get anywhere." Bullseye rolls his eyes. "Hell, we went out on a limb with the Ghost Hawk, right? And she's never failed us so far."

"You're a brave man, Bullseye." You pat him on the shoulder. "So everything's good?"

"Mechanically, I don't see any faults, and we're talking about UN personnel here. You don't get into the UN by being a lazy prick." Bullseye shrugs. "But hey, if we do indeed crash hopefully we won't be alive long enough to regret it."

"Aptly said, Bullseye." You sigh.

"Anyways, I'll give her a test run or two before we head out. Wanna stick around for a ride along?"

"Actually, I was going to stop by the field hospital to reserve a bed for you." You say.

"Haha, fuck you too, Boss." Bullseye laughs mirthfully. "We'll see who's laughing when I do a few low passes on this thing!"

"Moderation, Bullseye." You warn him as you exit the craft, passing by Hoskins and Nungesser. "Make sure he doesn't do anything stupid, okay?"

"What do you think I've been doing all these years?" Hoskins chortles. "Bullseye might not mind crashing his bird but I sure as hell do!"

"Oh, I'm confident in his skills." Nungesser smiles. "But if he were to get in trouble, then that would mean he'd need a rather daring rescue..."

You just chuckle to yourself as Nungesser drifts off to her own little dreamland and you head over to the field hospital. Like most of the structures in the camp, it was mainly a hastily set up tent structure surrounding an actual hospital building which you were sure was already filled to capacity. You dodge lines of both injured and medical personnel streaming in and out and manage to squeeze your way inside.

However, you almost wish you didn't.

Inside, the tent was packed tight like sardines. Most of the patients present didn't even have their own cots or beds, and were forced to stand or lie down in the aisles as they waited for the overworked doctors and nurses to notice them. However, as you looked around, you manage to catch sight of a familiar face.

"Dr. Rubens?" You blink.

"Captain Pierce?" Rubens blinks. Her face is extremely different from how you last seen it. Instead of that cool, confident expression she always carried, Rubens' face was now fraught with exhaustion and anxiety. You had no doubt that her healing powers were in huge demand in this situation. "I guess I should have expected to see you here."

"Well, what are you doing here?" You ask.

"No time to talk. Come with me." Rubens grabs your hand and drags you deeper into the tent. "Got shipped here as soon as the bombs dropped. Been treating wounded ever since, mostly focusing on the ones with radiation poisoning."

"Sounds serious." You wince.

"It is. Mending cuts and fusing bone back together? That shit is easy. Radiation poisoning? That's damage on a molecular level. Not so easy." Rubens sighs. "On top of that, not many healwitches have been trained to handle radiation poisoning. We've already had a few nearly drop dead from the strain of treating those types of injuries."

"How are you holding up, then?" You ask worriedly.

"Hanging on there." Rubens smiles weakly. "I know it's really, REALLY selfish of me to ask, but you wouldn't mind if you could lend Janice or Red to me? Every little bit helps."

"I think I can spare Janice. She'd probably do more good here." You say.

"Oh, thank you!" Rubens hugs you, and then realizes what she's doing and pulls back, flustered. "O-oh, sorry about that! I'm just so tired..."

"Don't sweat it. I'm used to it." You chuckle.

"But seriously, thank you." Rubens smiles.

"Least I can do." You nod and look up. "Speak of the devil..."

"Will, Bullseye's already done his test flight and he says he's ready to fly." Janice says as she weaves her way through the mass of patients and aid workers. "We can go at any time."

"Good." You say. "Also, Janice, I think you should stay here and help Rubens treat the wounded."

"Gladly!" Janice nods. "But are you sure about this? You'll be down one witch."

"Well, I still have Tarin, Nungesser, Ghost, and Misono to watch my back, right?" You grin. "Don't worry, we'll be fine."

"If you say so..." Janice gives you a quick kiss. "But if you don't come back unharmed, THERE WILL BE WORDS."

"All right, all right!" You chuckle and give her a quick kiss of your own. "Hold down the fort while we're gone, okay?"

"Jesus." You see Ruben roll her eyes at your open show of affection. "Come on, Jan, we've got lots and LOTS of work to do. Grab a set of scrubs and let's go."

You head back out of the hospital and to the helipad, where you see the Osprey getting ready to lift off. Bullseye and Red are giddy with excitement, while Hoskins, Rex, and Ghost look on with skepticism. Tarin of course has a neutral look about the whole affair, while Nungesser and Misono seem unsure what to think of it.

"Holy shiiiiiiiit, this thing looks so awesome!" Red's eyes shine. "Why didn't we have something like this earlier?"

"Probably on the account that it's still very new." You note.

"Is... is it safe?" Misono asks. An innocent thing to ask out.

"Safe enough for the UN." You say, unsure of what else to tell her.

"Y-you better not c-crash!" Ghost angrily yells at Bullseye.

"Hey, hey! Since when have I ever crashed a bird?" Bullseye frowns, offended.

"Sir." Tarin slides up next to you. "Maybe you should put some more of us on the ground team. With our shields, we won't have to wear NBC gear and we can more around more freely."

"I need all my witches in the air." You tell Tarin.

"Fair enough." She nods. "We'll start getting into our strikers, then.

"Captain Pierce?"

You turn to see UN personnel carrying sets of MOPP suits.

"Aww craaaaaaap, I HATE those things!" Red groans.

"Well, we're walking into a radioactive hot zone. We don't really have much of a choice." You sigh as you grab a set and prepare to put it on. "There's no getting around it."

"Can't I just like, use my shields? Magic can repel radiation just fine." Red grumbles.

Well, without being weighed down by MOPP gear, which, let's admit it, was a lot of extra weight and bulk, Red would have much better speed and agility. However, you were afraid of what might happen if her shield were to ever go down. Maybe it would be worth it to have some form of secondary protection.

Yep, but this way she can keep her energy for making combat shields rather than having a constant Anti-radiation shield which would tire her out quicker.
>>
>>40316246
And remember that radiation still bleeds through shields. Remember the martian masers could cook a witch through their shields. Slowly but it worked.
>>
>>40316282
Excellent point!

While a MOPP suit may not stop all the radiation, it will at least stop some of the radiation that a shield wont
>>
>>40316107
"You're going to wear one just like the rest of us peasants." You grunt as you grab a set and shove it into Red's arms. "The more protection the better."

"Agh, fiiiiiiine." Red sighs.

It takes a few minutes for you, Red, and the rest of the crew to get suited up. You then take a seat inside the Osprey's passenger compartment, and note how it's a bit more spacious than the interior of the Ghost Hawk. You see Bullseye look back from the cockpit.

"You ready, Boss?"

"Yeah, let's get this going." You say.

"All right, lifting off!" Bullseye says in a giddy tone. "Everybody strap in!"

You all quickly buckle up as the engines power up. The massive, oversized rotors on either side of the Osprey spin up and the craft slowly but surely rises into the air.

"Well, so far so good." Rex grumbles.

"Hey, don't be like that, Rex!" Red elbows her fellow PJ. "You gotta be open minded about these things!"

"Easy for the girl with magical shields to say." Rex sighs.

Finally, the Osprey gains enough altitude above Polotava, giving you a second look at the burning city that was slowly tearing itself apart.

"All right, punching it!" Bullseye cackles.

The Osprey then jolts as the entire craft transitions from vertical lift to forward flight. With no side windows, you couldn't see the the wingtip rotors moving, but you could definitely hear the mechanical gears and hydraulic systems groaning as they did.

>>40316586

"Don't worry, it's perfectly normal." Bullseye assures you.

"Hey, Tarin, everything looks from out there, right?" You ask nervously.

"No anomalies." Tarin reports.

"See? What did I tell you?" Bullseye laughs.

Now you were starting to feel the acceleration kick in. It was certainly a different sensation, traveling at such high speed. You were easily going twice as fast as any Blackhawk, which was a refreshing change of pace.

"So how do we handle this, Boss?" Bullseye asks. "We can fly low and fast like always to stay off the Russians' radar, but I'm thinking we should take advantage of this bird's higher max altitude to avoid the worst of the radiation."

"You really think the Russians would engage us out here?"

"Hell if I know. But I'm pretty sure any SAM sites they were keeping around here got fried in the blast." Bullseye tries to assure you.

"Go high, Bullseye. I'd rather avoid as much radiation as possible." You say.

"Got it, Boss." Bullseye nods and the Osprey begins to climb higher and higher. You have to remind yourself not to panic when it climbs past what would normally be the Blackhawk's normal performance ceiling.

"Still doing good?" You ask.

"Jeez, what's with all the questions all of a sudden? You scared?" Bullseye laughs.

"Concerned." You clarify.

"Come on, was there ever a time I let you down?"

"Debatable." Rex grunts.

"Ah, don't listen to them." Red says encouragingly. "They're just being assholes."

"Captain, we have contacts." Tarin warns.

"Where? Who?" You ask, suddenly going alert.

"Looks like four Flankers, just past the Russian border." Tarin continues. "They're moving for intercept, but it doesn't look like they're engaging, or at least not yet. No attempts to contact us, either."

"Well, ARE broadcasting a UN IFF." Bullseye points out. "Then again, they might just be trying to lure us in."

"Don't worry, Willy! I'm right behind you!" Laika says, her XF-19 trailing behind your formation. "Just give the word and we can completely smoke them!"

"Attention Russian aircraft." You announce. "We are a United Nations aud flight. Under UN Charter, of which your nation is a signatory, you are obligated to grant as freedom of movement in your country. Please respond."

There is a brief, tense pause. No doubt the Russian pilots were relaying your message back to their superiors. They were never terribly imaginative.

"UN Flight, you are not allowed to cross into Russian airspace." The pilot squawk. "Is against regulation. Turn back or we fire!"

Damn, why did they always have to be like this? You sigh and shake your head.

Another brief pause.

"We are just following protocol." The pilot responds.

Typical. You got the feeling the pilot had no clue what he was talking aboit and was just parroting what he was told.

"Look, we're on a recue mission and we're going in whether you want us to or not. "You say grimly. "If you fire on us we WILL defend ourselves and we WILL destroy you all. Is that clear?"

There's another brief period of silence. However, one of the Flankers suddenly breaks off from the rest.

"He's spiking us!" Bullseye warns.

Well, so much for diplomacy. Look like you were going to have to make an example of him. Maybe one of the witches could do it. Or better yet, Laika was not in visual range and had stealth features. They would never see her coming. Maybe fear of the unknown would work better than fear of a witch.

The missile spears straight through the Flanker's belly and shatters the fuselage like glass. You then see the cockpit flash and explode as the pilot ejects, his chute successfully deploying as he falls to earth.

At first, you were tempted to just leave the pilot to his fate for causing you so much trouble. However, your inner sensibilities take over.

"Tarin, please go fetch him." You sigh.

"Roger." Tarin says as she jets forward.

Meanwhile, you see the remaining three Flankers break away and fly off, no doubt spooked by Laika's show of force. With the skies clear, nothing stops Tarin from plucking the ejected pilot out of the air and depositing him on the rear ramp. When you pull him in, you notice that he's unconscious.

"He resisted." Tarin says nonchalantly.

You can't help but laugh a bit as the Osprey flies ever closer to ground zero.
