You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, leader of the Ninth Division of the Seireitei's Court Guard, and you're not sure whether you're in trouble or not.

A fellow Captain of yours, Ukitake Jūshirō, has just arrived in the hospital room where you've been recovering your strength after being deafened and partially blinded in the opening blasts of the battle for Messines Ridge. His attitude is that of the same pleasant, somewhat frail-looking man you've come to know, but he seems quietly concerned over something he's yet to share.

He glances at the flowers Rangiku left for you with a smile. “I see I'm not the first person to visit today.”

“Far from it,” you admit. “Standing room only at one point.”

“I hear you and Miss Shinōin beat a Vasto Lorde without your limiters being released,” Jūshirō muses, a hint of surprise obvious in his tone. “An impressive feat, even for two Captains together. I'd have thought only Shunsui and I were capable of it.”

Truth be told, you only barely managed. After using Kengen to counter the cero he aimed your way and attacking recklessly afterward, you created an opening for Yoruichi to use her Zanpakuto. She explained it to you a few days ago in private, finally lifting the veil of secrecy that surrounded her sword's mechanics.

“If you don't mind me asking,” the white-haired Captain continues pleasantly, “how exactly did you manage such a feat?”

Probably going to do a lot of soul burials due to the influenza, but may not be as active as WW1 was on deaths in a concentrated area.

Shōsōtō, or “treasury sword”: Yoruichi told you its name is derived from the word for a large storehouse that major Buddhist temples use to store valuables. Its shikai has two powers, which are to produce throwing knives like the ones you and she both carry, and to “memorize” the characteristics of spiritual tools. Her Bankai, when she learned it, gave her the ability to reproduce those tools at will using the local reishi and her own reiatsu.

The weapon she used at Messines is a strand of bombs that destroy any target after two hits to the same spot, developed prior to the first zanpakuto being forged. She also has access to lethal razorwire, a bone wand that allows high-speed flight, the Tentōken cloak you used to fly to America some months ago, and according to her several unique artifacts also kept by her clan like the Shihōin Shield.

You have to wonder what would happen if she studied something like the Ōin, or Tenkotsuki's Hoshi no Tama... in Yoruichi's hands Shōsōtō has truly terrifying potential, limited only by her sense of responsibility. No wonder she's kept this information almost entirely to herself.

>I used one of my most powerful techniques, and Yoruichi used her zanpakuto to finish it.
>Two Captains both got serious for a moment, so of course we stomped our enemy.
>We got lucky. You and I both know that being lucky can be better than being good.

“The Vasto Lorde was an idiot,” you explain with a sigh. “He wasted time trying to taunt a deaf woman, and let us catch him off guard.”

Ukitake nods thoughtfully. “I see. I take it you know the technique Yoruichi used to do the deed, then?”

“Yes, but it's best that nobody else knows. I'm sure you understand.”

“I've been curious about her sword for a long time,” the white-haired Captain admits, taking a seat near your bedside. “The only one on her examination board who's still alive is the Head Captain, and you know him.”

“Hm,” you frown, doing your best impersonation of the old man's trademark scowl. “I am afraid I have no intention of telling you such a thing, young man. It is a thousand years too early for that.”

Ukitake laughs softly. “That's not bad! Speaking of which, I've got a present for you.”

He pulls a small parcel out of his sleeve, placing it at your side. When you open it, you find that it's filled with six rolls of Inari sushi, rice stuffed into fried tofu pockets. “Kirio sent these down for the occasion.”

You can't help but smile. “Hey, that's great! I've been dying for a good meal!”

“I figured hospital food couldn't do the job,” he grins, “so I had her make them special.”

“It's not that the food's bad, there's just not nearly enough,” you admit, tearing into the small platter. “I appreciate it.”

Jūshirō nods before rising to his feet. “No problem! But there was one other thing... the Head Captain wanted to see you and some of the other Captains in his office later. You have some time, though.”

Well considering that Riku's idea and Mayuri implemtation used the souls released by dead hollows to create a ballast, maybe Aizen could set something up to gather souls as they head to Soul society. After all this is different then what happened in the series. Aizen may have other sources of inspiration.

Maybe he instead gets wind of Nanking and sets up something beforehand, or some of the japanese death camps, to gather the souls.

Each of these rolls is roughly the equivalent of five plates of food, so knowing the way you feel after missions this isn't going to be enough. You smell barbeque, and you want it.

Following your sharp sense of smell, you find an outdoor courtyard where it seems a bunch of Eleventh Division members are crowded around an open flame. It's on the Fourth Division's grounds, but none of the support-focused shinigami seem like they're willing to try and tell them to leave. In a moment of perfect poetic justice you use hirenkyaku to move past the crowd of thugs, grab a spit of dry-rubbed pork off from the fire and dashing away again.

Kenpachi looks down at the fire as you perch yourself on a wall a good distance away, then he looks back up, craning his head around to figure out what just happened. His usual scowl gives way briefly to a look of confusion before he shrugs and returns to preparing another slab of meat.

It tastes pretty amazing, actually. You may have to pinch food from Kenpachi again some time.

“How are things going here, Mirai?” you ask when you finally arrive at your own Division headquarters.

She looks at you in confusion as she notices what you're eating. “Where did you get that, Captain?”

“Nicked it from Kenpachi. In my defense he was cooking it on Fourth Division's grounds, so it's okay.”

Your Sixth Seat shakes her head in disbelief. “I don't believe it works that way, but alright.”

I kek'd. Now we have two people on our asses when they realize who stole their stuff.
>>

It was clearly a move by Kenpachi meant to provoke and call out Captain Unohana.

The meat doesn't last very long at all, but it manages to top off your empty stomach sufficiently. So you allow Mirai to return to her work, seeking out Rangiku. You find her in her office, working on what looks like a draft for her next article, and knock at the doorframe.

“You busy?” you ask as she looks up to see you.

She smiles, happy to see you on your feet. “Not really, no. I was looking to take a break. You good to be up and about?”

You shrug. “All I needed was a decent meal. Let's go.”

Rangiku ties her Lieutenant's badge to her sash, and follows you towards the First Division headquarters. “You know what you've been called in for?”

Actually, you've been considering that. “I've actually got one idea...”

Inside the Head Captain's office you find two other Captains: Yoruichi and Aizen. The former is wearing her casual orange jacket, the one with the collar, and the latter isn't wearing his Captain's haori. Neither of them have brought their subordinates, and Yoruichi seems particularly bored as she waits for the Head Captain to speak.

“So what've I missed?” you mutter to Aizen. “While we were deployed, I mean?”

“Mayuri secretly produced more Ballast souls,” he mutters back to you, “so there's that. The Vasto Lorde was good for twenty-five thousand on its own.”

That's actually fantastic news. You should have something just shy of two hundred thousand of the things by this point, if your estimates are right. “Your Division coping?”

He nods slowly. “Their losses were painful, but the survivors seem to have grown closer. Gin also performed admirably... you raised him well.”

“Thanks for that.”

Finally, the Head Captain looks up at the four of you. “I believe you all are aware of the reason I called you here?”

He pulls a few pieces of paper out from a drawer in his desk. “From Captain Aizen, one request for a replacement haori. The reason given for its return was that Lieutenant Ichimaru spilled tea on it during a shelling.”

Knowing Gin, that was no accident. Cheeky little bastard. “The stains refuse to come out,” Aizen explains calmly.

“From Captain Shihōin, one request for a replacement haori. Reason given was severe damage to the shoulders, which has been noted on the returned item.”

Yoruichi shrugs noncomittaly. “Come on, Head Captain. Which of us hasn't ruined a haori or two?”

“Or like seven,” you interrupt.

“Quiet, you.”
(1/2)
>>
>>40302679
The Old Man continues, eying you in particular. “Your request was accompanied by a written note stating that it was “obliterated”, with no remains.”

“Yeah, there was nothing left,” you explain. “Sorry."

Yamamoto shakes his head sternly. "Do you understand what the Captain's haori is?"

"Highly flammable?" you ask.

Aizen shrugs. "Easily stained?"

"Surprisingly fragile," Yoruichi shrugs. "Trust me, I'm an expert by now."

"The Captain''s haori is a point of pride," Yamamoto growls. "The loss of this equates to a visible abandonment of our pride, and should be avoided at all costs."

"It's hard when our 'pride' is made from tissue paper and wishful thinking," Yoruichi offers in rebuttal.

>You hate to pick nit, but Yoruichi has a point.

“Sorry to have to say it, but maybe two of us need a new sort of haori?” you ask nonchalantly. “Maybe made of something that wouldn't be shredded at twenty percent of our power?”

Yoruichi nods in agreement. “I've been asking for that for years, Head Captain. It's just dumb to have to strip partway before using Shunkō.”

Yamamoto produces a mostly-intact haori from beneath his desk, meaning it can't possibly be yours or Yoruichi's. “I had Sasakibe try to get the stains out as well as he could. What was not removed you will simply have to deal with, Captain Aizen. Your request is denied.”

Aizen takes the haori back, and you notice one or two spots where there are still faded tea stains on the garment. It may be petty, but you take a little bit of satisfaction in seeing that.

“As for the two of you, Captain Shihōin, Captain Kusajishi,” the Head Captain continues, “may I take it that these requests for new uniforms are likely to become a regular occurrence?”

You and Yoruichi exchange a quick glance. “Probably, yes.”

“Very well,” Yamamoto grumbles. “I will relay your concerns to the manufacturer. Do not expect Shutara to be pleased with your track record at destroying her work.”

Aizen seems to take notice of the name. “Shutara? As in the Shutara Scale? She makes the Captain's haori?”

The old man cocks an eyebrow at his junior. “Do try to keep from allowing tea to spill on it again, young man.”

Though I'd also like to set up some regular communication with the other afterlives to be up to date in human affairs. Given the scope of this war, the rapid rate of progress and innovation, and the fact that the rest of the world is interacting significantly more, this might be a good idea. We might even petition Central 46 for that.

You eventually settle into a routine that holds for the next few years. Whenever possible you practice your Hollowfication in the Valley of Screams, and whenever that's not possible you continue training almost as normal. The main difference is that you've begun to feel things more with your sixth sense than before, though not yet to an extraordinary degree. Just enough to be aware of it, really. As for Hollowfication, you double the time you can maintain the transformation.

That brings you up to sixty seconds of fighting with that thing on.

In the living world, there's never any rest. An outbreak of influenza in Japan claims over three hundred thousand lives by 1920, pushing the ability of the Seireitei's ballast souls to handle the rapid influx. In 1923 there's another disaster, this time caused by the earth itself. A massive temblor strikes in the Kanto region, and leaves devastation and political disarray in its wake. Times were especially difficult for ethnic Chinese, Koreans, and Okinawans... basically anyone who spoke Japanese with an accent was targeted by pogroms after rumors spread of Korean immigrants poisoning wells.

Not everything has been doom and gloom, however. Not long after your meeting with Yamamoto two new haori arrived for you and Yoruichi: each has been modified at the shoulders with a slightly thicker piece of white fabric and something resembling the reinforced shoulders of Yoruichi's casual jacket. These thicker panels are surrounded by white piping, while the center is a very dense and stiff fabric with a high degree of figuring to it.

Yours are tenné, the color of the Ninth Division, with the poppies that are your Division symbol in gold embroidery. Yoruichi's garment features orange and the Shihōin clan's crest in gold as a motif. Both are sleeveless, with slightly longer openings for your arms than usual.

The fuck happened there?

Did you keyboard go full Kamikaze on you?
>>
>>40304292
I read that as a massive tumblr strikes.
>>
>>40304231
As Yoruichi explained it to you, the shoulders of these new haori are made from Ōken fabric, the bones and hair of the Royal Guard woven into the form of cloth. When you test them out it the advantage behind such measures is made clear: they're the only clothes with strong enough fabric at the shoulders to resist the destructive power of Shunkō, and they'll even provide a little extra protection against strikes to the base of the neck.

With them comes a note: “Damage my tailoring and you die”. One more thing the Royal Guard will kill you for doing, you guess.

September, 1923.

You've just returned from the living world, having helped provide overwatch to the Imperial Japanese Navy as it evacuated earthquake refugees from the ruins and moved supplies throughout the archipelago. The sight of super-dreadnoughts like the Nagato and Mutsu stirs memories of the Great War... it's good to see such things put to better use than that waste.

Rather than your own Division greeting you at the Senkaimon, you find the wizened face of Kuchiki Ginrei, and the rather snotty nose of his grandson Byakuya.

“For the last time, Ginrei,” you sigh dramatically, “I will not marry your grandson. I'm sorry.”

Predictably it's Byakuya who flies off the handle, while Ginrei merely raises an eyebrow and watches the whole thing unfold. He knows after all these years how to give the younger Kuchiki just enough proverbial rope to hang himself with.

“Captain Kusajishi!” Byakuya insists loudly. “Please do not joke about such things!”

Ginrei's old eyes light up. “You would make a good match for the boy,” he replies calmly. “He could do with learning how not to take things so seriously.”

Byakuya seems to be floored by the first half of that sentence, to the point that he misses the second half entirely. “Surely you cannot be serious, grandfather! To marry such a... oh...”

Seems he realized just then that he was being played.

“Such a wonderful, generous, and talented young woman,” you pick up where he left off. “That was what you were about to say, wasn't it?”

Ginrei's expression grows more serious once he's finished chuckling to himself. “I fear we have pressing matters. Your Lieutenant will meet us at the First Division barracks.”

“It's always something,” you sigh. “What now?”

“I would rather let the Head Captain say.”

“I see you have returned,” Yamamoto nods in your direction. The old men around here, chiefly Sasakibe, the Head Captain, and Lord Ginrei all seemed to take notice when the Ōken-augmented clothing arrived for you and Yoruichi, as did Captain Unohana. You even heard her explain the concept to Kotetsu, who has recently been promoted to Lieutenant due to the retirement of her predecessor and who found the notion of making a uniform from bones and hair astonishing.

“Good. We may now begin.”

“So what's the deal, Old Man?” Shunsui asks immediately. “Must be something serious if you've brought us all here like this.”

“Even Kenpachi put in an appearance,” Aizen observes in a pleasant tone, stuck somewhere between surprise and amusement as he gazes at the Eleventh Division Captain from behind his heavy-framed glasses.

For his part, Kenpachi looks like he regrets having bothered. “Too many words,” he grumbles, “not enough point.”

“We are here to discuss a security concern,” Yamamoto informs you. “A number of armed men, including Shinigami who disagree with the Central 46's political stances, have declared their intention to form an autonomous polity in the Rukongai in opposition to the Seireitei.”

“A rebellion, in other words?” Yoruichi muses. “Annoying. What're they up in arms over this time?”

Isshin merely shrugs. "Did they send some sort of manifesto?"

The Head Captain shakes his head silently.

“Probably something to do with the pandemic and the earthquake?” you guess? “I was seeing a lot of nationalistic fervor about it being the punishment of the gods and all that nonsense”

Yamamoto nods thoughtfully. “That may not be far from the case, these rebels seem to be of a fundamentalist bent.”

“Getting rid of the Central 46 should be step one for any rebellion,” Shunsui observes, “so what's step two? What're they planning on replacing it with?”

“We don't know yet,” Unohana replies quietly. “We would have started an investigation, but...”

“Don't tell me,” Yoruichi sighs, “no authorization?”

Unohana bows respectfully. “It's as you said.”

“Gettin' so I can't take a dump around here without gettin' authorized first,” Kenpachi grumbles. “Fuckin' pathetic.”

“I hate to agree with Zaraki, but he's right,” Isshin muses, interrupting Kenpachi before he can say anything even more vulgar. “There's gotta be precedent for devolving power at a time like this.”

“Hey, I'm soundin' pretty smart all of a sudden!” Kenpachi chuckles.

Normally this sort of fight falls under the jurisdiction of the Sixth and Ninth Divisions, being key to the defense of the Seireitei as well as upholding the honor of the Gotei 13 by dealing with violent dissent within the ranks. But seeing as Eleventh Division didn't get to fight in Europe a few years back, they must be antsy about potentially losing a chance to show their strength.

You sigh. “Sixth and Eleventh could handle this,” you suggest. “It's partly Sixth's responsibility anyway, and Eleventh hasn't gotten to do anything lately.”

Yoruichi seems to agree with your assessment. “Sounds fair. Zaraki? You game?”

“Doesn't make sense for them to take on the Seireitei if they're all weak,” he muses. “Sure. I'll take a few of my guys along.”

“Captain Kusajishi,” Yamamoto orders, “you will also take your Commando unit along for oversight and added site security.”

You bow slightly in acknowledgment. “Yes, sir.”

As the Captains file out of the building, you find yourself pulled aside by Lord Ginrei. The old man has a concerned look in his eyes. “I hate to put you in this position, Miss Kusajishi, but I'm sure I do not need to tell you why I would wish to speak with you.”

"How long?" you ask quietly.

Ginrei sighs wearily. "I cannot say for certain. Could be a few years, could be a week from today. All I know is that the last time I checked, I was unable to use my Bankai."

"That alone... that is telling."

You never thought you'd see the day, that strong guys like Ginrei simply didn't age. But a part of you always knew you were lying to yourself, and that even the hardiest Shinigami isn't immortal. They just age slowly in so many cases, with especially powerful warriors aging as slowly as Unohana or Yamamoto seem to.

You don't know Ginrei as well as you could, but the thought makes you a little sad. "I guess that's why the Old Man wanted me to go along?"

Lord Ginrei bows his head quietly. "Indeed. It is because I may or may not be able to handle my own responsibilities from now on."

>*BUT* he also has a massive respect for your sheer overwhelming power, your skills, and your experience... he just thinks you're wasting it.

In a lot of ways, in Soul Society it all comes down to power. A lot of Shinigami could be real bastards to others outside the districts and few would care.

Then again, I don't think he truly understands how Riku uses the power, she just uses it differently.

“Does Byakuya know?”

Ginrei shakes his head silently, telling you that he hasn't yet.

“Are you planning to, or will you be counting on your seated officers to ease him into your shoes?”

“I hesitate to confront him with this,” he mutters softly. “After Sōjun died so suddenly I swore to look after him, but now?”

You think quietly about the situation. “You don't think he's ready, do you?”

“More so,” he replies, “I know he is not. Not yet.”

“Well, you're not dead yet,” you point out. “And even if you died tomorrow, Yoruichi and I would be happy to look out for him.”

Ginrei shuts his eyes. “I see. Thank you for allowing me to bend your ear like this.”

“Don't mention it,” you reassure him. “Or do. Your call.”

Assembling your Commando team doesn't take long at all. Kai and Iba are practically out the door before you ask, and Ichinose is right on their heels. Even Mirai only takes a few moments to straighten her own clothing and hair before following. Rangiku, however, drags her feet.

“Come on, Captain! Someone's gotta stay behind and run things, right?”

You heave a sigh. “Fine, Rangiku. You can sit this one out.”

“Thanks, mom,” she tells you quietly after your Commandos take a head start to catch up with Sixth. “Fighting other Shinigami never sits right with me.”

“I know,” you tell her. “Don't worry about it.”

"Thanks... really."

The initial conflict is over an open field in the hills of Kusajishi, outside of all the little run-down towns. Maybe twenty shinigami have rallied local thugs and swordsmen into something that looks like a militia, while your own forces consist of twenty swordsmen each from Eleventh and Sixth, along with the Captains and Lieutenants and your Commandos.

“This will be no challenge,” Byakuya comments, watching the enemy column march up through a narrow pass a few hundred meters away. “Please, Lord Ginrei, leave it to me.”

“No, Byakuya,” Ginrei rejects the younger Kuchiki's request. “That is not your position as Lieutenant.”

“But I can end this fight now!” he protests. “Sir, please allow me to fight?”

>Let's see what the boy can do, Ginrei.
>We can send him in with Eleventh. I can't imagine they'll hold back anyway.

Yeah, something is wrong here. If it's just 20 scrubs, a single captain could wipe the floor with them effortlessly. People like Kenny, Unohana and Riku could probably drop them all just by letting their spirit pressure flare. They must know that.

“Ginrei's right,” you tell Byakuya. “You're at a point where you'll be expected to use your head. Trust your subordinates, and be ready to respond if and where you're needed.”

Ginrei nods in agreement. “That is the correct decision.”

Byakuya eventually relents, waving to the Sixth Division fighters to flank from the left. Kenpachi, however, takes his men straight in. The Eleventh tears into the column, causing many of the thugs to break ranks and leave the better-trained and disciplined Shinigami behind. Of course Sixth Division is ready, killing several who refuse to drop their swords and knocking several to the ground.

“They're not doing too bad,” Kai muses.

Ichinose snorts. “It's not like their opponents are anything special. These must be mostly new fighters.”

“Any indication whose Shinigami those are?” Mirai muses half to herself. “I have to admit it has me curious.”

“We will check their uniforms when they're captured,” Ginrei replies before wincing as the bald Third Seat of Eleventh Division skewers one of the Shinigami who stood to fight. “Or killed.”

“So, Lieutenant,” you ask rather loudly. “If you were the commander in charge of this operation, where would you imagine you'll be needed?”

He seems to take your question as seriously as everything else. “I am not sure, though I suspect you have an idea of your own?”

You nod. “Anyone else notice it?”

“There's a buncha ambushers, right?” Iba asks.

You give him a grin. “Of course it's an ambush. Their stronger fighters are hiding along the ridge that runs parallel to the road, overlooking the column as it advances. We caught them too early, and now they're moving through cover to spring the trap.”

“Shall we move in and intercept them, ma'am?” Mirai asks, her left hand finding the throat of her zanpakuto's sheath.

“You have my permission,” you tell your Commandos. “I want a clean sweep. Lord Ginrei, could you spare your grandson?”

The Captain of Sixth Division ponders your proposal briefly before he gives his blessing. “It would be a fine experience, Byakuya. Go with them.”

Byakuya nods sternly, and you can tell he's grimly determined not to disappoint his Captain and grandfather. “Yes, sir. My Senbonzakura and I will do the job.”

Ginrei watches him leave quietly. “You see? Too eager for conflict, too proud, too easily inflamed.”

“He'll cool with age,” you reply calmly as your Commandos and their guest release their blades and join battle with the would-be ambushers: there are another fifteen of them or so, stronger than the ones guiding the column of local toughs. “It was the same way with me... you couldn't stop me throwing myself headlong at anything that even LOOKED like a challenge.”

“And how many years did it take for you to fully mature?” he smiles at you.

“Still working on it,” you admit with a smile of your own.

“I wish I had the time to see him get that far. But at this rate, it seems I won't last that long.”

You shrug, watching the pink “petals” of Senbonzakura do their bloody work alongside your own team. “Quit thinking that way. Instead make the most of the time you have, no matter what that amounts to.”

“Fair point, Captain. Fair point... seems as if there's trouble.”

Where your Commandos have engaged the ambushers, most of the enemy have been quickly overwhelmed. One of them is on her knees, with one of her companions having placed himself between her and Byakuya, who seems ready to finish what he's started. Mirai is shouting at him, but you can't quite hear what.

You don't bother asking Lord Ginrei's permission. As a Captain you don't need it any longer, and if he disagrees, as a Captain he'll do whatever he pleases about it. You use hirenkyaku to reach the scene of the argument before it gets too heated.

“Killing them now is pointless!” Mirai insists angrily, hefting her Seki-studded iron club over her shoulder. “Worse, to kill an enemy who has given up would only serve to tarnish your blade, Lieutenant.”

Byakuya seems to disagree. “They've declared their intention to attack the Seireitei, and would have raised their swords against my subordinates. I owe them nothing but a quick death.”

“She isn't here by choice!” the male rebel shouts back. “She's only here because I defected, don't hold that against her!”

“Your reasoning is none of my concern,” Byakuya responds coolly, his blade's petals rotating smoothly around him in a circle. “Only your actions.”

Ginrei follows not long after you do. By that point, the wounded woman in black has noticed you. “Damn,” she mutters. “We really got unlucky, didn't we mister Nozaki? To have drawn the Hakushi... maybe we were destined to die here.”

Mirai seems about ready to put her commitment to sparing lives where she can fully behind her zanpakuto, which while admirable in the face of an opponent like Byakuya is a needless measure. You place a hand on her shoulder and silence her with a shake of your head and a steady gaze. She silently relents, allowing Lord Ginrei to speak his mind.

“Byakuya, I see that you are enthusiastic in following what you see as your duty,” he begins, clearly seeing not a misguided Lieutenant but his own flesh and blood in need of the sort of fatherly advice Sōjun can no longer provide. “But be aware that if every problem could be solved by killing, we Captains would have solved all the world's problems between our combined efforts.”

“Discerning when killing is required and when it is not is the unspoken duty of the strong and the righteous. Remember that.”

For the first time in what feels like it must be years, you're treated to the sight of Kuchiki Ginrei as he once was, as wise as he was powerful. The burden of centuries is momentarily lifted as he stares down his grandson, who silently seals Senbonzakura's petals with what looks like a hint of shame.

“I... apologize, grandfather,” he mutters quietly. “I got carried away again. I'll try to follow your guidance more closely in the future, and avoid any rash action.”

You nod in satisfied silence, before beginning to see to some of the wounded. There are a lot of rebels still alive here, in varied states of health, meaning Yoruichi and her lot are going to have a long job of interrogating them.

“We're... not gonna die?” the wounded woman asks her companion, who had stood up for her.

He offers her a sad smile. “I don't know yet. We're not out of danger, that much is sure... but things could be worse.”

is this going to be an issue later on, i thought Aizen went through a lot of trouble to try and create one of their bones?

so what starrks reaction to us finding his family?

Not just one of their bones, but the "key" that was imparted to them. The amount of material used to upgrade your current haori is insufficient to get you into the palace though the Valley of Screams would work, if you wanted to try that for some reason

Positive, but he doesn't remember anything from back then, or even what he was like as a Hollow at first.

You did something nice by making sure he knew, and he appreciates it.

Do our arrancar friends have a recruitment list for when we get more swords?
Have they patronized a certain candy store?

What's our rep with the Valhallans?

No and no.

Most Hollows are psychopaths, you really lucked out in finding the few who weren't back to back... though at this point I'd say Riku's been given a misrepresentation of how common not-asshole Hollows really are.

As for going to the living world, that would trigger so many alarm bells in the Seireitei you'd go deaf again. Some members of the Royal Guard are likely to be uncomfortable just knowing Starrk and Halibel exist. Not so much out of feeling threatened, but a little jumpy none the less.

You're the "White Death". Your freakish power and fluent English were well noted, so you can probably expect to hear from them at some point in the future.
