Shōsōtō, or “treasury sword”: Yoruichi told you its name is derived from the word for a large storehouse that major Buddhist temples use to store valuables. Its shikai has two powers, which are to produce throwing knives like the ones you and she both carry, and to “memorize” the characteristics of spiritual tools. Her Bankai, when she learned it, gave her the ability to reproduce those tools at will using the local reishi and her own reiatsu.

The weapon she used at Messines is a strand of bombs that destroy any target after two hits to the same spot, developed prior to the first zanpakuto being forged. She also has access to lethal razorwire, a bone wand that allows high-speed flight, the Tentōken cloak you used to fly to America some months ago, and according to her several unique artifacts also kept by her clan like the Shihōin Shield.

You have to wonder what would happen if she studied something like the Ōin, or Tenkotsuki's Hoshi no Tama... in Yoruichi's hands Shōsōtō has truly terrifying potential, limited only by her sense of responsibility. No wonder she's kept this information almost entirely to herself.

He pulls a small parcel out of his sleeve, placing it at your side. When you open it, you find that it's filled with six rolls of Inari sushi, rice stuffed into fried tofu pockets. “Kirio sent these down for the occasion.”

You can't help but smile. “Hey, that's great! I've been dying for a good meal!”

“I figured hospital food couldn't do the job,” he grins, “so I had her make them special.”

“It's not that the food's bad, there's just not nearly enough,” you admit, tearing into the small platter. “I appreciate it.”

Jūshirō nods before rising to his feet. “No problem! But there was one other thing... the Head Captain wanted to see you and some of the other Captains in his office later. You have some time, though.”

Well considering that Riku's idea and Mayuri implemtation used the souls released by dead hollows to create a ballast, maybe Aizen could set something up to gather souls as they head to Soul society. After all this is different then what happened in the series. Aizen may have other sources of inspiration.

Maybe he instead gets wind of Nanking and sets up something beforehand, or some of the japanese death camps, to gather the souls.

Each of these rolls is roughly the equivalent of five plates of food, so knowing the way you feel after missions this isn't going to be enough. You smell barbeque, and you want it.

Following your sharp sense of smell, you find an outdoor courtyard where it seems a bunch of Eleventh Division members are crowded around an open flame. It's on the Fourth Division's grounds, but none of the support-focused shinigami seem like they're willing to try and tell them to leave. In a moment of perfect poetic justice you use hirenkyaku to move past the crowd of thugs, grab a spit of dry-rubbed pork off from the fire and dashing away again.

Kenpachi looks down at the fire as you perch yourself on a wall a good distance away, then he looks back up, craning his head around to figure out what just happened. His usual scowl gives way briefly to a look of confusion before he shrugs and returns to preparing another slab of meat.

It tastes pretty amazing, actually. You may have to pinch food from Kenpachi again some time.

“How are things going here, Mirai?” you ask when you finally arrive at your own Division headquarters.

She looks at you in confusion as she notices what you're eating. “Where did you get that, Captain?”

“Nicked it from Kenpachi. In my defense he was cooking it on Fourth Division's grounds, so it's okay.”

Your Sixth Seat shakes her head in disbelief. “I don't believe it works that way, but alright.”

Inside the Head Captain's office you find two other Captains: Yoruichi and Aizen. The former is wearing her casual orange jacket, the one with the collar, and the latter isn't wearing his Captain's haori. Neither of them have brought their subordinates, and Yoruichi seems particularly bored as she waits for the Head Captain to speak.

Finally, the Head Captain looks up at the four of you. “I believe you all are aware of the reason I called you here?”

He pulls a few pieces of paper out from a drawer in his desk. “From Captain Aizen, one request for a replacement haori. The reason given for its return was that Lieutenant Ichimaru spilled tea on it during a shelling.”

Knowing Gin, that was no accident. Cheeky little bastard. “The stains refuse to come out,” Aizen explains calmly.

“From Captain Shihōin, one request for a replacement haori. Reason given was severe damage to the shoulders, which has been noted on the returned item.”

Yoruichi shrugs noncomittaly. “Come on, Head Captain. Which of us hasn't ruined a haori or two?”

“Or like seven,” you interrupt.

“Quiet, you.”

Yamamoto produces a mostly-intact haori from beneath his desk, meaning it can't possibly be yours or Yoruichi's. “I had Sasakibe try to get the stains out as well as he could. What was not removed you will simply have to deal with, Captain Aizen. Your request is denied.”

Aizen takes the haori back, and you notice one or two spots where there are still faded tea stains on the garment. It may be petty, but you take a little bit of satisfaction in seeing that.

“As for the two of you, Captain Shihōin, Captain Kusajishi,” the Head Captain continues, “may I take it that these requests for new uniforms are likely to become a regular occurrence?”

You and Yoruichi exchange a quick glance. “Probably, yes.”

“Very well,” Yamamoto grumbles. “I will relay your concerns to the manufacturer. Do not expect Shutara to be pleased with your track record at destroying her work.”

Aizen seems to take notice of the name. “Shutara? As in the Shutara Scale? She makes the Captain's haori?”

The old man cocks an eyebrow at his junior. “Do try to keep from allowing tea to spill on it again, young man.”

In the living world, there's never any rest. An outbreak of influenza in Japan claims over three hundred thousand lives by 1920, pushing the ability of the Seireitei's ballast souls to handle the rapid influx. In 1923 there's another disaster, this time caused by the earth itself. A massive temblor strikes in the Kanto region, and leaves devastation and political disarray in its wake. Times were especially difficult for ethnic Chinese, Koreans, and Okinawans... basically anyone who spoke Japanese with an accent was targeted by pogroms after rumors spread of Korean immigrants poisoning wells.

Not everything has been doom and gloom, however. Not long after your meeting with Yamamoto two new haori arrived for you and Yoruichi: each has been modified at the shoulders with a slightly thicker piece of white fabric and something resembling the reinforced shoulders of Yoruichi's casual jacket. These thicker panels are surrounded by white piping, while the center is a very dense and stiff fabric with a high degree of figuring to it.

Of course Sixth Division is ready, killing several who refuse to drop their swords and knocking several to the ground.

“They're not doing too bad,” Kai muses.

Ichinose snorts. “It's not like their opponents are anything special. These must be mostly new fighters.”

“Any indication whose Shinigami those are?” Mirai muses half to herself. “I have to admit it has me curious.”

“We will check their uniforms when they're captured,” Ginrei replies before wincing as the bald Third Seat of Eleventh Division skewers one of the Shinigami who stood to fight. “Or killed.”
