Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you enrolled a girl in school and stumbled upon a birthday surprise.

It is currently the 11th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH. Happy birthday!

You take a few hesitant steps towards the pillar the three skeletal figures hover around. Each of them has turned to stare at you through their empty eye sockets, the acid spilling from their wounds sizzling as it touches the stone steps leading up to the golden basin at the top of the pillar. As you draw near, the figure's voices once more invade your mind.

{It seems to me to leave you free}
{Is a recipe for... hang on a moment.}
{Rhyming was a silly gimmick two thousand years ago and it's a silly gimmick today.}
{It's a tradition!}
{Screw tradition.}
{What were we talking about before this?}
{We were going to admonish him for ruining the cloak.}
{I don't know if I'd call it ruined.}
{Shut it.}

You're having a little trouble keeping up with which of them is speaking to who, why they need to use your mind as the medium through which they argue you can't be sure. Regardless, they fall silent for a time before once more their voices fill your head. This time, they seem to have reached some sort of agreement.

{You ought to take greater care with our gifts.}
{Indeed, had you managed to damage-}
{Stop that.}
{It wasn't even intentional!}
{Quit squabbling, we have a guest.}
{Where was I?}
{Had he managed to damage...}
{Right, right. Had you managed to damage the cloak any further,}
{You wouldn't be here to hear our nagging.}
{Now you're doing it to.}
{Regardless, one's day of birth is a special time.}
{A fortuitous time.}
{We offer you a gift, a show of good faith.}
{To express our gratitude for the entertainment you've given us.}
{To ensure that you continue to prove entertaining.}

One of the figures extends one of its distended, skeletal hands and beckons you with a finger covered in desiccated flesh. Another points to a small platform just in front of the basin. It's fairly easy to figure out what it is they're asking.

>Ascend the stairs and stand in front of the basin. Might as well see what they're offering.
>Thank them for being so considerate but excuse yourself, you've had quite enough of spirits and their dealings.

Well, you might as well see what it is they're offering. After all, they gave you the cloak and it's practically never left your shoulders since then. Hopefully whatever gift they have to offer you will be just as useful. As you ascend the steps you're careful to avoid the streams of acid pouring down from the gaping maws of the spirits. You realize, consciously, that the substance probably wouldn't hurt you. It didn't harm Suresh when he walked through it. However, even if it's not necessarily harmful you still have no desire to touch it.

As you reach the top of the steps and come to stand upon the platform before the basin, the three figures array themselves in front of you, on the opposite side of the basin. The liquid inside, a mercurial white substance which seems to swirl endlessly, cast each of them in strange shades of black and white. The one on your left is the first to extend one of his hands, drawing from the pool his offering.

A gauntlet rises from the substance, covered in stone plates to serve as armor. It seems as if it ought to be part of a full suit of armor, but only the gauntlet is offered. It comes to float just above the figures palm, and the figure's voice comes to pervade your thoughts as it makes its pitch.

{An artifact from a time long forgotten by mortals. Stone will flow as water under your direction, and nothing will be able to whether to storm of your fury.}

The central figure is the next to draw their offering from the basin. What rises from the semi-ethereal substance within is far from what you'd expect. A robe, black and slashed with red velvet, comes to hover just in front of you. The robes are decorated ornately, all manner of silver bobbles sown into the fabric and each one embedded with a red gem stone. You must say, there are a few more spikes than you're comfortable with.

{Armor is for small minded individuals without the power to protect themselves by other means. With these robes the Vys which permeates this world will leap to your defense with barely more than a thought. None shall dare to question your authority. Of course, such fine control does come with a cost. A sacrifice will be necessary.}

The figure on your right is the last to reach out his hand and draw from the basin an artifact. He brings forth a ring, carved from a substance you can't quite place. It seems to be some sort of scale. On the outside of the ring is carved a heart, a very realistic heart you might add, and wrapping around the band are two twining snakes, twisting endlessly together before meeting on the side opposite the heart. On the inside of the ring is a carving in a language you don't recognize. It's neither Rhynian nor Samjan, you can say that much with certainty.

Nothing else in the game, literally nothing, has been available that could do that.

You guys suck.

Its not a trap if we explicitly know its going to need to kill someone to work and if we fight something strong enough to kill us coming back to life wont make it go away.
>>
>>40280296
It would probably be played out as an ethical dilemma, like we would learn he had starving children waiting for him at the last minute.
>>
Just to head off an argument here, and because the ring will never again make an appearance in this quest, I'll spoil it for you.

You would've needed to eat the heart of an innocent. Once a week. To sustain the magic in the ring. Can't be a criminal, can't be one of your enemies. Monks, children, virtuous individuals, all those would've been fine. For instance: You could eat Darzi's heart and satisfy the requirements. However, if you ate Skull Kid's heart you wouldn't satisfy the requirements.

Thus, the best candidates are people you know, but they're not the only candidates.

Really? R E A L L Y?????

Let me make it clear for you. Mik will die. This quest will end. There are enough morons playing this thing to ensure that this will happen and probably sooner rather than later.

So, the ring was the only failsafe we have ever seen in this game to keep it going past the idiocy of the player base.

Gone...poof....we will never see it again.

Jeez.
>>
For the robe, which you'll also never see again:
You would've found people flocking to you, treating you as a sort of semi-religious figure. Eventually the robe would grow powerful enough to weaken reality such that void creatures could slip into your reality. They'd serve you. Then eventually you'd start finding that your little cult was doing things on your orders, except you didn't remember giving the orders. It would turn into a sort of Fight Club-esque dual personality thing.

>Then eventually you'd start finding that your little cult was doing things on your orders, except you didn't remember giving the orders. It would turn into a sort of Fight Club-esque dual personality thing.

You can never be powerful enough to prevent death for sure.

Serious answer.

You think there might every be a time when we do something really stupid that accidentally kills us?

Say...like, trying to put an entire dragon's tail in our cloak and reverse polarity of the cloak to cut off the dragon's tail?

Not saying we would ever do anything so stupid like that because our player base is eminently intelligent and careful. But just for the sake of argument, lets say that somehow something like that happened.

Ring would matter.

And I can think of about 10 other scenarios it would matter in. Not hard to do if you actually THINK about it.

We can heal our selves if he lose the process to think about healing ourselves.

The ring was about BRINGING Mik back to life. Not about helping stop it.

Soma, could Mick make an item that just floats forwards forever with the right runes?
Like if he just enchanted say, some of skull kids (already withdrawn) blood with repeal iron and sustain then enchanted pieces of iron with attract and sustain so that as it hovers forwards the iron just keeps following it. Could something like this just keep moving until something finally stops it?

I certainly understand there are no do overs.

Just really irritating that a choice that impacts so many things so powerfully was made with so little time for discussion and so little discussion. Probably all of 5 minutes before it was locked and done.

That choice literally affected how long this quest will continue, imo.

Now that I'm on the record, I shall not remark further on it.

1. We easily won't run into a child ever again.
extremely small chance. Of course it can happen.
2. Just means we need to keep increasing our metal magic. Easily with our trait + another passive we gain with GM with a mind reinforcement. As can be around it, like we were last time.
But for it to actually look at us, we would defiantly need to use vys to fortify our mind. And spend like 10 vys into the mind barrier at GM level.

If we died and moved somewhere whatever killed us will most likely kill all the people we have with us at the time. The ring really isn't that useful. 99.9% of the time its useless, better to get something to help prevent us dying in the first place. The ring is the worst option in my opinion.
>>
>>40281089
>Easily with our trait + another passive we gain with GM with a mind reinforcement.

>>
>>40280837
>Ring would matter.
You know what would matter far far more? Mik not going with the most insane option because he’s insane.

There had been people asking to use something small to test it first. If Mik had been mostly sane (like 2-3 on the scale) he would probably have tried that first.

Also people being lolrandom is the biggest risk to Mik right now. Not only can a few idiots control Mik because of his insanity, the majority of players seem to go for !!FUN!! options just because they think it is amusing. That’s what will kill Mik if anything ever will.

You know what would happen if we had the ring? The risk-takers would take even bigger risk until even the ring’s limits are tested. It would not help keep Mik alive at all.
>>
>>40281121
>We can -prevent- brain damage
Look, he is talking about physical damage you idiot.
But yes, metal would be effective in that we could reinforce the armor.
And armor in general would be effective because it is..Armor.
But I believe you are just referring to being mentally attacked. Which I believe is much more likely to happen. For that case we have our ring that helps with insanity.

Alright lads, lets get something productive done. Soma has confirmed via IRC that we hav e a rough outline of how Rhynian Vys generators work and can build a small man's version of one. He also confirmed we need special crystals, crystals with "regular structure," for storage of said vys. "Magical" crystals, sorta like the ones that are growing right outside the vault at this very second. We need to collect samples on the way out.
>>
>>40281571

Sounds like we could control water as liquid.

Anything that may have to do with earth, wouldn't be surprised. Sort of like the dragon staff but with just a + to rolls or something. making it more viable for other things.
>>
>>40281571

the boots sounded harmless compared to the other two and that shit ate away at our max Vys.

Assassin and Corruption

The robes look downright comically evil and the ring will require that you kill people to sustain your own life. You don't like how that sounds, not one bit. The gauntlet is suspicious because it didn't have a price named. However, it also seems fairly simplistic. It's just a gauntlet which enhances the power of Earth magic. You could probably enchant something similar based solely on what you already know of enchanting.

You focus your thoughts, your mind brushing against something vast and unknowable. {The gauntlet. It seems the safest choice to my mind.}

The other two artifacts vanish into the pool in front of you, sinking away into the ethereal substance, as the gauntlet floats away from the palm of the figure on your left. You grab it as it gets close, turning it over in your hands. Stone stone is rough, but the coating beneath seems to be some manner of leather, though it feels odd. Not like any leather you've handled before. The inside is lined with silk, presumably to make pulling it on and taking it off a bit easier.

As you're inspecting the gauntlet your attention is drawn by light pouring from the basin. Just how does this thing work? Do the three spirits guarding the vault create the artifacts as they draw them from the liquid within, or are they drawing from some sort of vast reservoir of ancient artifacts? You're inclined to think it's the latter, but you suppose you can't really be certain.

(1/2)
>>
>>40281908
Like i said you only need to do that if you want to keep the protection up, i believe we could lapse in the protection and not do the heart thing for a while.
Speaking of which i wonder if we could store hearts of innocents in our cloak for it.
Also i was talking about how it affected us personally, it seemed to be the one that didn't negatively affect us in any real way personally.
>>
Regardless, the gauntlet seems harmless enough. You undo a clasp around the wrist and pull the gauntlet over your right hand. There's some extra space at the tips of your fingers but it's not a real issue. That done you redo the clasp and feel something prick the palm of your hand. A moment later the gauntlet reshapes itself, the flared stone plates on top coming to rest flesh against the back of your hand and the entire gauntlet adjusting to better suit you. Strangely enough, you almost feel like the stone plates are a part of you. You can move them independent of the rest of the gauntlet. It's as you're starting to experiment with the gauntlet that the voices of the three worm their way into your thoughts.

{A wise choice.}
{The robes would've been better.}
{More entertaining, certainly.}
{Fools. The ring would have provided the greatest amusement.}
{Too much drama.}
{There's no such thing as too much.}
{Shall we tell him?}
{I don't think we should.}
{Better to let him figure things out on his own.}
{Funnier that way.}
{Indeed.}
{Well, Mikhael. We do hope that you enjoy our gift to you.}
{Do try not to hurt yourself.}
{And if you do hurt yourself, at least have fun with it.}

With that the voices cut off, and the three figures rise towards the ceiling. They assume positions hovering motionlessly in front of three stone overhangs. You don't feel that vest presence lurking just beyond the edge of your thoughts anymore. Seems they've lost interest in you, for now.

It seems pretty likely that the gauntlet is going to grow over us. The hints that it's a part of a whole set and we can move the stone like it's a part of our body are hints that fit that idea. We should probably be prepared to amputate our arm if necessary.

You reach out to the stooges, trying to get across a sense of gratitude. {Thank you, for what it's worth. You three have been some of the only otherworldly entities I could say I genuinely enjoy interacting with.}

They don't respond, but you felt obligated to say it. Besides Ricky, these three are the only ones that haven't seemed like they're actively trying to screw you over. Sure, they're not exactly what you'd call kind. They're really just in it for their own amusement. Still, the simple fact that they're not actively malicious seems to make them exceptional amongst strange entities from outside your reality.

You make your way through the darkened chamber, a thousand pillars surrounding you and each of them shrouded by bloom. You feel briefly compelled to go wandering off the beaten path, to explore this vast, apparently empty, vault. However, something tells you that you and the stooges are not the only things in this place. The brush of foreign minds against your own. You decide against exploring.

You step through the doors into the entryway and shut them behind you. The presence of those foreign minds vanishes, and you make your way to the portal at the end of the hall. It's perfectly black, impossibly black. A hole in reality which you stride through confidently, without so much as a moment's hesitation. You emerge only slightly disoriented on the other end, in the vast chamber containing the massive stone doors which protect the vault.

The sound of stone grinding against stone fills the chamber as the doors begin to close, so you take a few steps forward to ensure you don't get crushed. The doors shut themselves with a heavy thud and there's a flash of light as magic courses through the carvings on the door's surface, then the chamber returns to seeming normality. Well, as close to normality as one can expect this close to a portal to an impossibly ancient vault guarded by creatures of the void.

You elect to try out the gauntlet, so long as you're here. With a thought you wrench a chunk of stone from the wall. You hadn't even really intended to take as much as you did, the chunk you've got is larger than your head. It wasn't even particularly costly, vys wise. You can only imagine how powerful this gauntlet would be if you were a Grandmaster in Earth magic.

The stone chunk you've torn off turns to sand when you will it to do so. You draw more stone from the wall, this time trying to be more careful. It takes a little bit of practice, but eventually you actually do manage to get solid stone to flow like a liquid without turning it into sand. The best you can tell you're constantly breaking it in a thousand places only to repair it a moment later.

Turning the stone and sand you've gathered into a solid sphere you set it down and attempt to use Earth magic to erode the stone. You find that you have a high degree of control over just how strongly and where you erode the stone. You're able to eat tiny, barely noticeable holes through the center or turn the entire thing to dust in a matter of a few seconds if you try. Turning your attention to the crystals sprouting from the ground around the vault doors an idea occurs to you.

You have all the runes necessary to create some sort of vys collecting device, except for a container. You know that crystal works better than most substances, and this crystal seems purpose built to contain vys, based on the information provided to you by Nature magic. Making your way over to one of the crystals you grab hold of it with the gauntlet and will it to snap off. The segment of crystal you're touching, and the crystal above it, suddenly dims while the base continues to glow a rich blue.

He holds the shit we tell him to.
We can literally kill a whole gang by telling Ricky to take them into storage and let him eat them.

You pull away the long spike of crystal and tuck it into the woven bag Suresh made for you, before removing the gauntlet and putting it away as well. That done you make your way slowly and carefully through the gloom on your way back to Hayes' workshop. You hear him hammering away at something or other long before you see him. He's seated in front of his furnace, a fire blazing within, carefully repairing some sort of golden breastplate.

IRC, the crystal at the center of the robe would've imbedded itself in your chest once it grew powerful enough. Spreading tendrils through your body, corrupting you, attempting to replace you.

Oh god it has to have something to do with the Entity or the dead Earth god.

Maybe this will cause the revival of Earth God? Or it grows into a suit around us and once it's complete we either become him or he revives and we become some sort of High Priest/Prophet of him.

We did that with the other entity. We could have offered, i think they would have said yes.
>>
>>40284817
Nah, they only offer things for shits and giggles.

Hayes seems occupied by his work, so you leave him to it. You can always come back later, or get a loan from Demetrios, or do some odd jobs around town. You could also simply wait for your cloak to repair itself, though you don't know how long that is going to take. It seems to have made a fair amount of progress already, based on a cursory inspection.

Instead of interrupted Hayes, you make your way to the double doors that bar entry to the Workshop and slip out, shutting them behind you. This particular section of the halls is sparsely populated, so you make your way towards the bank of tall windows that line the wall nearer the entry hall. You're looking for a servant of some sort. In the end, you simply decide to head to the front desk. There's always a few attendants there.

Navigating the press of students you soon find yourself standing in front of a desk where a young human woman occupies herself playing with a child. You don't think she's the mother, but you can't really be certain. All humans look so young to you until they start to lose their hair and shrivel out like a date left too long in the sun. You rap your knuckles against the wood to draw her attention.

She pulls her attention away from the child, smiling when she notices you. Whilst bouncing the child on one of her knees, an activity the child seems to find endlessly entertaining judging by the way it begins to giggle, she addresses you. “Is there anything I can do for you, sir?”

You nod, leaning your weight against the top of the desk. “I was wondering if rooms had been prepared for one Mikhael Abdul-Hakim. I was hoping to meditate and perhaps perform some experimentation with an artifact of mine and I'd prefer to do so privately.”

Recognition dawns on her face. “Ah! Of course, the Archmagos sent word that a room ought to be prepared for you a few minutes ago. Room three-oh-six has been made available for you. It's in the Faculty Quarters. All our guest rooms are occupied by Rex Aelius of Agrealla and his entourage.”

You recall hearing something like that from Suresh when you spoke to him before departing to Khmedi. Something about an exchange program, or something like that. You wonder if you'll get the meet this foreign king before you leave? It might be interesting to find out how the practice of magic differs across continents. He'd also be the seventh ruler you've met since you were banished, give or take.

Regardless, you thank the woman and start to make your way towards the faculty quarters. However, you wonder if you ought to see about meeting with Demetrios so long as you're here. You kind of want to ask him how things went with that elf he was trying to bang, and then ply him for money.
