Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is fine, and the date is January 9.

You are Kyril Torikov and you were woken up by the sunlight streaming through your window. With your vacation officially over it was now time to get back to the grind. Kyousuke and Touma were no doubt heading back to school. The same could be said for Asuka. Thus you didn’t really have much else to justify putting off work for a little bit. Well there was your car but you were pretty sure Nayuta could hold that over you. You also needed to finish doing cataloguing the crate of ammunition around your apartment. That was a tedious task. Honestly, you weren’t sure you were willing to put off reporting in to Nayuta to do that. Your vacation was rather eventful already given your various misadventures. She was sure to have several words to share with you. Hopefully she wouldn’t bring them up. Doing legally questionable things and saving the day was starting to become routine.

You hadn’t forgotten your homework of course. While you had had time to live a little, for the most part you were VERDICT. Your actions pretty much ensured that VERDICT was an open secret, not to mention that you had revealed to friends and loved ones who was actually under that mask. Nayuta had asked you to contemplated taking up some kind of double life as a superhero. It wasn’t the best solution but it was all you had if you wanted to be able to go out in public without concealing your face constantly. Sure you were legally dead but it’s not like the average stranger knew that. It was something to be decided when she finally asked.

But enough about that, time to,

“Would you like to be a superhero?”

It was a question that you felt was asked a long time ago. The idea was Nayuta’s. You hadn’t given it that much thought in the intervening days between now and then. Your thoughts wandered through the hypothetical.

First and foremost, you would need a secret identity. Most heroes had it the other way around, coming up with a costume and a name. You already had the name VERDICT and a signature, unique looking helmet. It wasn’t an image that you had to absolutely keep however. Nayuta had told you that you were free to come up with whatever you liked as long as you could stick to the role. Then after that, if you had deigned to adopt a new persona, you would have to construct a civilian identity, presumably with Nayuta’s help. It would let you show your face in public but had to be kept separate from when you needed to be ‘heroic’.

That too was another thing to keep in mind. You were still technically City property. As long as you didn’t cross certain lines your public identity should keep you relatively safe. What those lines were, however, was something you were going to have to talk to Nayuta about. In the end it seemed like you were going to have to go see her anyway. Still, it was a bit of a walk, and it would be a great opportunity to come up with some ideas of what kind of superhero you wanted to be, and a plausible back story or motivation to go with it. It had to be something you could live with though. The mask wasn’t something you just took off because it became too heavy.

>Tell me about yourself. Why do you wear the mask? (write-in)

Nayuta as always was based in yet another unused office building. She wasn’t alone. Alongside here was Kaoru. The two of them were probably discussing something work-related because as soon as you entered, Kaoru bid the two of you a good day and left. Your tracked her as she exited, noting that her stride was rather hesitant. Still, as soon as she was presumably out of earshot, Nayuta greeted you with the usual cheery,

“How was your vacation nii-chan?”

Chances were good that she already knew all about it.

“So-so,” you finally replied evenly, “I’ve doing my homework.”

“Oh?” she was honestly expecting the opposite, “So you really want to be a superhero?”

“Well not yet, but I’d love to be able to show my face in public again. I’ve even come up with some suitably dramatic sob stories too.”

“You’ve put some thought in to this,” she replied after you regaled her with your zany ideas.

On some level you felt offended. Even you did your homework somewhat regularly back then.

“Well here’s the thing nii-chan, you have some good ideas, but some of them probably aren’t going to work if you want to keep being VERDICT.”

VERDICT was obviously the resurrected transhumanist super soldier. Channelling the spirit of vengeance, or patriotism, was a perfect fit. Being an ally of justice or a beacon of hope on the other hand was much harder, given the trail of destruction that you’ve left behind.

“Or you could just be the sidekick to the awesome magical girl Nayu-tan,” she spun around with a flourish.

You assumed she was joking.

“We can sort out the details later, but first I need to know if you’re still on the fence about it,” she said, “Once you make the decision it’s going to be hard to take back nii-chan. You can put it off for now if you want to but now is probably the best time for it. So I’ll ask again nii-chan, would you like to be a superhero?”

NAYUTA IS NOT MAGICAL!
>>
“Yeah, I’ll do it.”

“Great,” Nayuta smiled, “For now we’ll stick with the VERDICT story until you have a secret identity.”

She stalked back to her battlestation.

“It just so happens that there’s a System Scan being done today as part of the start of a new term. An extra entry at the bottom of the new transfers isn’t all that surprising.”

“Tell me I don’t have to go to school again,” you groaned.

“Of course not nii-chan, I expect you to finish your course work on your own.”

She was also tapping her own noggin, referring to the helmet.

“I won’t get you TESTAMENT so that you can just cheat your way too.”

A pair of sunglasses and a flesh disc was produced from her backpack.

“These are your disguises,” she then produced an aerosol spray, “And take off your shirt.”

You removed the helmet. The sunglasses were supposed to scramble facial recognition, while the disc was mostly just to conceal the port at the back of your neck. Nayuta started spray painting your arms a more natural fleshy tone. It was still obviously a prosthetic but at least it wasn’t a SpecOps black.

“What should I put myself down as?”

“Whatever you want, even your old name if you want nii-chan. I’ll make sure no one asks you too many questions.”

“I’ll hold you to that,” you put your shirt back on.

The time is late morning, the weather is warmer, and the date remains unchanged.

Nagatenjouki was a really prestigious educational establishment. They probably didn’t expect VERDICT to just waltz in the front door, not that anyone recognised you as VERDICT. You obviously weren’t wearing their uniform and it drew stares. Quiet whispers of ‘yankee’ and ‘delinquent’ followed your jacket and jeans self as you made your way towards the appointed room. There was obviously some time to kill so your current pace was akin to a lazy stroll.

As luck would have it, there were a bunch of kids standing around the waiting area. Two of them you recognised. One was the Accelerator. You supposed he needed to undergo the System Scan every once in a while at some point to hold on to that #1 spot. He hadn’t recognised you and was sitting alone on one side of the room. Either all the other kids stayed away from him, or he had chased them away. The other was Dinah. She was exchanging words with some gents on the opposite side of the room. Her face was polite but it didn’t seem to have the expected effect on her conversation partners.

You don’t think they’re quite at the level of harassing her just yet. They were kinda loud and obnoxious though. It wasn’t annoying but it certainly did grab your attention. She noticed your approach first. The two guys didn’t shrink much at your approach. You were taller than everyone else in the room and you knew how to look imposing.

“Greetings.” “What you do want?”
There were two different reactions to your approach.

“I’m not interrupting am I?”

“Not at all the seniors were just leaving.” “Yeah how about you take a seat?”

You glanced at Dinah then turned your gaze on the two supposed seniors, silently telling them to get lost. They didn’t exactly avoid your gaze but they certainly didn’t hold it long. Before it came to blows however, you could hear a rough and throaty,

“Oi, sempai.”

It was the Accelerator. All eyes on the room turned to him.

“You’re noisy.”

In other words he found them irritating too. His face was bored but even you could tell that he was telling his seniors to shut the fuck the up. With a huff, and a shoulder check, the two of them left.

“Many thanks friend.”

“Grumpy there stole all my thunder,” you smiled and nodded at the Accelerator.

“Even so, your intentions to confront them helped. Are you a new transfer student?”

“You could say that,” your smile evolved from disarming to rakish, “They don’t take no for an answer?”

“I am unsure. I’m told I have an accent since I’m from the United States of America.”

“Oh really? Would you mind telling me more?”

The chat was enough to while away the time until it was your turn with the eggheads. Of course it was then that the two of you realised you had both forgotten to introduce yourselves.

“Ah apologies friend, I am Dinah Polendina, may I know you name?”

Well you suppose if you were going to come up with a civilian name, now was the time for it.

“No problem, you can call me,

The time is now late afternoon, the weather is crisp, and the date remains unchanged.

The last time you had a System Scan you were classed at a Level 2. Now though, you were the clearly a Level 3. So if there was a positive to you having died horribly, it was probably that. Most of your Ability was shackled by the VERDICT OS though. It was being used to simulate the natural movement of your limbs, if you remembered correctly. The only time you had full access to the well of your unlimited and barely controlled power was when you disengaged the limiter. Knowing how little you could do was constricting and uncomfortable. At some point you wanted to stop relying on the software to do everything for you.

By the time you were finished, most of the waiting room had cleared out. You even saw Dinah being called as you stepped out. Nayuta then chose that exact moment to call you. Thankfully the sunglasses functioned exactly like your helmet. You wondered how that worked as you answered the call.

“You sure love making work for me nii-chan,” she practically complained, “Kyril Torikov, nothing suspicious about it at all.”

“You did say I could use my old name if you wanted to,” you rolled your eyes knowing she could see it, “Now what?”

“Well it’s time for your public debut!”

“Like some kind of press conference?”

“Yes, well the press conference will come later but we really should decide on what you want to be before you go out for a patrol. You know what that means.”

No you didn’t.

“It’s time to go shopping.”

“What,” you uttered flatly.

“You need to build an image nii-chan,”

“Even if you don’t want a costume you’re still going to need a different set of clothes, if only to throw people off your trail. I’ll see you in a bit nii-chan.”

“But I don’t want to go clothes shopping,” you sighed.

Your objections were overridden since Nayuta had chosen to hang up at that point.

“Are you alright friend Kyril?”

Your head jerked with a surprised start. Oh, it was just Dinah.

“It’s nothing,” you waved her off, “How’d your test go if you’re willing to share.”

“Sensational,” she declared, “I am a perfectly average Level 0.”

Well good for her you supposed. Honestly, you expected more disappointment. It was a surprisingly mature reaction. Then you noticed her slight hesitance.

“For your information I’m a Level 3 telekinetic,” you replied as humbly as you could.

“Um, I meant to ask if you could perhaps help me with an errand?”

Oh.

“Sure, I’ll see if I can help out.”

“I must find someone named Kihara Nayuta for further tests and I do not know this City well enough.”

“That’s oddly specific,” you remarked not to mention highly suspicious but you kept that last bit to yourself, “But you’re in luck, I happen to be her, er, friend.”

“Splendid, you must be very popular friend Kyril.”

“I’m not sure about that,” you shrugged.

Nayuta wasn’t alone when you arrived, Kaoru was with her. The two of them gave you a look, the former with a wide smile and the latter with an inquisitive expression.

“I suppose I should introduce you to my friend then, Dinah Polendina, she was looking for you Nayuta.”

“Greetings and salutations.”

“Right, Kihara Nayuta,” your boss nodded, “Nayuta’s fine, this is Jaswinder Kaur, a mutual friend.”

On the other hand, you had a suspicion that Dinah wasn’t asked to look for Nayuta without reason. “Oh before you go I have something for you nii-chan.”

She produced a baseball cap from her backpack. It had the Judgement livery on it.

“Uh thanks, but I’m not really in to baseball.”

“Stop making fun of me nii-chan, it’s your new disguised helmet,” she puffed up in anger, “Don’t make me override your Ability again.”

“Sure, sure.”

“Mou.”

She tackled you in to an alleyway and before you could even get up you could feel a wall of force pinning you to the ground. You had forgotten she could do that, whatever it was that she did.

“Alright I give, I give.”

She ignored you, and put the cap on your head. Casually, it looked like cloth but it really was more of a plastic. It felt hard enough to be to be too.

“Just pull the beak down and the rest will slide in to place, otherwise it’ll behave like most other felt caps. It isn’t as strong as a normal helmet but at least you won’t look suspicious out in public.”

“Yeah, I’m sure the green and white isn’t suspicious at all,” you agreed, “Can you get off me now? Not that you’re heavy or anything.”

Whatever she was going to say next was interrupted with a beep.

“Ah, duty calls again,” she sighed and got off.

“How come I never get that?”

“You weren’t meant to go on patrol for normal incident reports,” she answered all business, “anyway it’s another bank robbery. Looks like it’s time to make your debut.”

You pulled on the cap and with a little whirring and a hiss, a familiar, albeit lighter, helmet enveloped your head. Nayuta had already set down a waypoint marker and was relaying information through the PiP.

“It’s a pretty big bank so going in through the front should be fine.”

Time was of the essence apparently. It was a good think you were always carrying as you slipped the Judgement armband on your sleeve.

“Remember nii-chan, try not to shoot everyone.”

“Why not?”

“Some of them might actually be hostages,” she sighs, “Kaoru-chan and I will be with you as soon as we can.”

The bank entrance was wide open and you simply walked past the metal detector. A dead security guard was lying next to it, his face crushed by blunt force. You flipped the safety off. There were civilians as well but most of them were unconscious, bruised, bloodied but not dead. It looked like whoever was robbing the bank at least knew THIEF’s rules but you couldn’t discount it yet. There was a trail of blood that led deeper in to the bank, presumably towards the vault.

You followed it and just as you were getting close to the vault you heard it. It was a pre-recorded message being played out on a cassette player.

“Do you know what time it is?”

It was stilted, unnaturally stitched together. You suppose that was the intended effect. There was a whimpering before a dull thud and the sound of a body hitting the floor. From the cries you made out at least two civilians. There had to be more than one perp inside the vault room but you couldn’t tell where they were. You kind of wished you had a flashbang or something at this point. Still you were sure you had a pretty good chance of taking them all by surprise and if you used CADME then it was all but assured. Of course you weren’t trained for this kind of thing. Nayuta was, and Kaoru too you supposed. It was a good idea to ask them what to do but if you wasted time then maybe they’d kill someone else.

Well Nayuta can go task manager on us, at least if I'm correct in assuming she's nearby waiting/watching
>>
You had to move in. It looks like they were executing hostages as vault was pilfered. You relayed a message to Nayuta before you activated CADME.

You reached out with power. There was only one way in. Good, they were trapped. Three figures lay on their sides, hands cuffed. You dismissed them. They were not prey. You slid in through the doorway weapon barking. There were four targets. One was caught by a round and you smiled in satisfaction as it entered through an eye socket. You rolled forward, their clumsy return fire clearly missing you as you moved. With a tap on the floor, you vaulted overhead as they struggled to reload, you brought one down as your feet hit the ceiling. The gun was empty and you discarded it with a snarl. Then you pounced on another before the last one finally reloaded.

Objects in the room left the floor as you hit it, superimposing themselves before you as impromptu cover. It was then that a fifth ambushed you. He was armed with a baseball bat and had struck at your chest. It didn’t stagger you for long, just enough to see him pull back for another strike. You stepped in, your head cocked back. The bat gave way as you roared and brought your forehead down on it mid-swing. Your left hand hooking in flesh as it followed your body. You didn’t bother to register the crunch of gristle on knuckles.

The last prey surrendered himself to the inevitable. His gun was empty after all, just like his courage. You picked up the broken splintered bat, noticing a cassette player at the corpses’ feet. It was still playing and you ignored it. Slowly, you turned to savour your prey’s expression.

“Do you like hurting other people?” you could hear the unnatural voice play.

Yes.

Yes, you did.

It was truly a waste of your time trying to teach your friends to think a little for themselves. You were Herlock Sholmes and you missed the silence that only Wilson could bring. Alas, you had to listen to the prattling of a journalistic soul. It was a rather charitable appellation all told, as far as rumour mongering went. This one looked like he actually had a lick conviction to investigate to the very end. In an ideal world he would have no need of you. Sadly, neither he nor the world were perfect. Thus the last thirty minutes of unsightly grovelling. He was hoping you would help him score the perfect scoop. It was a question the whole world was asking after the Endymion Fiasco. Who was the mysterious helmeted figure?

“Tell me what you have so far,” you commanded.

“Well I started snooping out some darker projects and well one looked like it fit the bill, a combat cyborg program given the name VERDICT,” you waved him off, “But of course the body had to come from somewhere and honestly that part wasn’t hard at all.”

You failed to inform him that he was being presumptuous.

“A quick look at hospital records, obituaries, that kinda stuff, child’s play,” he continued oblivious, “And I came up with a suspiciously convenient match. Stiff was a kid named Kyril Torikov, apparently cremated immediately after being pronounced dead. That and the timeline fits so…”

“So?”

“I was hoping for a clue.”

You sighed.

“If you truly think the late Kyril is our mysterious cyborg then perhaps you should try investigating the circumstances of his death, or childhood, his teacher, even his peers. Obviously you had thought of that already, you simply wished me to accompany you. It is because you suspect that danger may befall you.”

He nodded and your eyes narrowed. With a sigh you finally replied,

“You’re not wrong. Let’s go.”

The boy lived alone. He had moved out as soon as he could. You could tell it was primarily motivated by freedom. Before that he lived in an orphanage as a Child Error. It was an arrangement by his biological mother who at the time was probably a fugitive of some sort. The orphanage was called Cypress Park. No financial irregularities either. The orphanage’s patron had deep pockets. Its current caretaker was referred to as Mum by the rest of the children. Despite her advanced age even her co-worker was besotted with her. All the children of the orphanage were properly cared for, loved even.

“Good day madam, my associate and I are journalists investigating Kyril Torikov. It’s to our understanding that he may have lived here once.”

“Yes he did, has Kyril done something wrong?” she replied.

You shared a look with your journalistic friend.

“Shigenomori-san, may we please have a seat?”

She led you inside to a private nervously. It wasn’t a remarkable office but you could do without knowing where she kept her private collection of boy’s love works.

“I haven’t heard from him months now,” she continued, “I’m not sure what you would ask an old lady like me for.”

“Shigenomori-san it’s to our regret to inform you that your charge Kyril Torikov has passed away on the night of August 29. You have our condolences.”

Her eyes widened then she slumped in to her chair as her breath hitched. Shock, you noted numbly, before her eyes filled with tears.

“I…I,” she muttered.

She had never been informed. Now she knew, only because a nosy reporter and his consulting detective had appeared months later to talk to her about it. It was too late the moment you had stepped foot in Cypress Park. Best to let her know now than when she finally goes snooping around where she should not have. It was the least you could. This lead was a bust.

The dorm was well kept. As visitors, and male at that, it was a tedious process to even ask for an appointment. The Tokiwadai Outer Dorm Supervisor was notoriously hard to get a hold of. From the suit and the glasses you could tell she held herself to a strict standard. The rules were enforced harshly but fairly. Thus she was incredibly annoyed by your request for an interview. Or at least that was the impression you got from her tone. Understandable really, she would rather be out and about doing her job and sitting at a desk being asked questions about her personal life.

Of course such things were baseless speculation until you met. The faint smell of alcohol and the tumblers on desk set off alarm bells.

“Gentlemen,” she greeted cold as the ice in her glass, “Please have a seat.”

She retrieved a bottle of single malt whiskey from a drawer in her desk and then poured herself a glass. You had declined her offer though your partner had not.

“You said you wanted to know more about Kyril Torikov?” she asked, “What’s there to know?”

She had recounted his most recent misadventures, including one with a certain English lord’s daughter. Several times she had paused to sip and each time she would go off on irrelevant tangents. Most of them concerned specific method and grip she would employ to wring his neck. Though not at all enlightening, it did offer some clues as to the circle that Kyril Torikov had moved in. A vengeful father was one thing. A vengeful and powerful father was another. Still it was too early to draw such conclusions so you proceeded on to your next lead,

The highschool was nondescript. It had an unremarkable name and while it was tricky to get in, it wasn’t hard to provide the proper credentials when asked after all. You had examined the young man in detail before you had even approached him. His face was clean, his hair immaculate, and her carried with him an air not of confidence but of worldliness that his other peers did not have. That and the faint scent of an older woman’s perfume set off some of your alarm bells. Of course the perfume did not match any of the teaching staff in the building so at least professionalism was maintained in regards to this highschool.

He identified himself as Nakazawa and was partial to answering some questions, even if his answers were evasive. He was one of the last few of Kyril’s contemporaries to have even talked to the boy. Kyril was his friend and was supposedly helping for the ACRE Assembly back in August. That was when Kyril had been. A day before he was due to face his charges, he was visited by many of the interviewed, including a member of the City’s Board of Directors. It was a matter of public record anyway though the contents of the meeting itself was not recorded. Strange then that he had disappeared in to the night, never having faced trial and dead in a forest a few kilometres past the City walls. It didn’t take a genius to put two and two together. His death was most likely faked, and if not then you sincerely did not want to know more.

“Of course we need to know more, what the City does to its dead is inexcusable.”

“My dear friend,” you replied with utmost seriousness, “If you persist in this case I will not follow you.”

He should have been content for I had found him dead the next morning, his face removed of skin. The warning was clear, and I recalled a particular sentence in Newspeak that translated thus, “Get rid of the error then file a report for submission to the supervisor.”

Interlude End, Q&A time, we resume next week.

Rolled 82 (1d100)

>>
>>40270305
Hey, what happened to that plot point of Asuka dreaming of some boy from the anime her image comes from?

Also, interesting how this quest is one of the few that didn't have any waifu wars, and has a faithful mc who wasn't ever really tempted.
>>
>>40270955
It requires a small bit of Mondaiji trivia, specifically when Izayoi discusses timelines with Asuka that that he's from after "the war". The war's still on, and thus the conditions have not been cleared.

As far as temptations go I'm not really doing a good job of putting anyone else in the running even if I do have 4 potential waifus in my notes.
>>
>>40271024
Not just in the notes. You have some around us, they just don't shine that much in that spot cause there's really no light pointed that way.
Not gonna complain either
because might think someone's trying to steal her harem

What is Kyril's kill count?

>4 potential waifus in my notes

I'm keen to guess

Asuka
Kaoru
Grímsdóttir
Riko

maybe add an orgy pastebin fic to the to do list

Asuka is best and first girl, she came off really strong and distinct.

and despite what my penis/inner pig wants, an orgy/threesome/swingers deal probably wouldn't fly (Asuka still has her trust issues right? I just can't see her signing off on such a thing.)
>>
>>40271168
>Riko
>Not matching cyborg girl Nayuta

tg is usually staunchly monogamous.

Any lewds with another girl would have to be initiated by Asuka

>>40271168

There's also Dinah

>VERDICT and the JUSTICE GIRLS
What's the Justice girls's line up, fellas?
>>
>>40271527
Verdict and the Valkyries sounds better imo

Magical Girl Nayuta
Asuka
Kaoru

what the roster limit?
>>
>>40271527
Kaoru
Sparky
Kyouko might be a stretch
Dihna could be roped in pretty easily
If we could keep from strangling her we can get the carpet muncher
Asuka might be down if there was enough spotlight and carnage for her.
Last order might have fun as like our oracle or w/e.
>>
>>40271602
I like Valkyries
I'd say 6, but really having our own team would be neat.
Might help against any tougher foes too, or if Hydra decides to fight us for whatever reason

>>40271606
I like that.
I'd say
Dictator
Railgun
Dinah/grimmsdotir/robogirl
Kaoru/her magic name which I forgot
Third Eschelon

Kyouko might be a stretch yeah, but she could really boost the powerlevel of the team.
Shutaura maybe?
Illya? Oh wait she left

Kyrils mom, hahaha
>>
>>40271705
>Kyrils mom
I know she's a powerful mage but all I can see her like driving the super hero mini-van and using the built-in artillery weapons on it after everyone puts on their seat belts and gets their caprisuns.
>>
>>40271808
That'd be fucking hilarious.

Oh and Kuroko/Teleporter might be a candidate, like the other guy mentioned could be in, just for the sake of mocking her all the time (shed want to join to be close to her waifu)
