You walk Shoukaku home – as it were. The cicadas have begun their almost deafening song as the last light of day slips from the sky, signposts and hedgerows shining gently in the brilliant silver light on one side, their others lost in inky shadows. Shoukaku says nothing; supporting your greater weight effortlessly; freeing you from the irritating tip tap tock of the cane. The moonlight shimmering on her hair gains a strange luster, almost... darkly delphinium. She cuts her eyes at you and you flick yours back to the path, but she smirks ever so slightly, as if she caught you looking. The heat of a southern Japanese summer is still simmering in the sprawling concrete expanse of Yokosuka, but a clean wind is rising from the bay and carrying it away.

You sharply scan the upper story windows of the dormitory building set aside for the shipgirls, but see no lights and no parted blinds. At the door Shoukaku turns to you, hands clasped before her demurely, and smiles up at you.

“Good night, Admiral.”

“My pleasure, Shoukaku.”

“Uh... One more thing...”

“Hmm?”

“.... why did you grab that man like that? On the train?”

“Touch not,” you say seriously. “Lest ye be touched.”

She giggles. “I was going to work my hand down and just... catch his wrist,” she says, “but you – I didn't even know humans could *do* that.” She smiles again – you're starting to wonder if she ever *stops* smiling before dismissing the thought as blasphemy. “Thank you, again.”

“Anytime.”

After the latch clicks you turn your wrist over and check the time – pushing 2120. Still time to get some work done – or maybe just pay that smartass Goto a social call.

You turn to begin beating concrete – and almost jump out of your skin to find Arizona standing there. The wind is rising into a steady blow now, whipping stray strands of red hair across her forehead and swirling the tails of her black duster around her ankles. Her expression is as serene and unreadable as always, but in one hand she's holding something long and black, like a rod of sorts.

Hey Arizona, I just had a crazy outing that was definitely not a date no matter what Hate and Sammy may have to say about it. Lemme tell you all about my outing and how I unleashed Hate on a pack of ravenous nerds that wanted to claim Shokaku as their personal slut.
>>

The old one was shattered across Kaga's face. Zuikaku has a good arm, she could go into professional baseball or handegg if she wanted to.

You currently have a very nice black ebony-wood cane with a nice functional grip; a gift from Hate.

“Oh,” you say, feeling relieved. “Good evening, Arizona.”

She approaches with strong, confident strides, her duster rustling dramatically in the wind. You eyeball the long black object in her hand curiously. “I've already got a cane, if you brought me one,” you say, hefting yours so she can see it. She stops a little closer than usual, meeting your gaze with those piercing, searching eyes – and raises the black rod to point at the sky.

CLICK-FWHOOMP!

You twitch despite yourself – and look up at the black canopy that so abruptly cut out the light.

“... what?”

Arizona tilts her head half inch, her eyebrows quirking so slightly that you mightn’t dismissed it as imagination if you didn't know her. As if to prove her point, a low, ominous rumble growls from the dark skies to the southeast.

“Oh.”

She tilts the umbrella ever so slightly as her eyes grow inquisitive.

“I was going to pay Goto a visit.”

She nods once, turns her eyes thoughtfully to the sky, then moves to your left side, wrapping her arm around your chest as high as she can. Before you can object she strides off with you safely captive, her arm supporting you like a steel band, if steel bands were slender and soft. Given the number of contradictions each shipgirl literally embodies it's a miracle your similes haven't held a union meeting and gone on strike yet. Her reasoning is demonstrated within minutes as the storm hits – wind-driven rain deflecting off Arizona's coated sides and slightly-tilted umbrella. She holds it in one hand against the wind with no apparent difficulty, and the umbrella itself hardly quavers. You wonder what the hell it's made out of and where you could get one.

You stop in the foyer of the administrative building long enough for Arizona to shake off her umbrella. An MP with a slung USP is re-winding a yo-yo. He gives you both the once-over, only smiling when he sees Arizona, giving her a silent go-ahead wave.

She doesn't talk, after all – you can both pretend it was never heard, just as you and Hate pretend you know far less about each other's demons than you let on. But there's a security in that vagueness; the knowledge that the other only strongly guesses the truth, but can't possibly know it all, and Goto stole that from you.

So you're in a fine mood when you crash through the door of his dark office. You find his tanned face bathed in the blueish light of a computer monitor, enraptured. Sitting on his lap is Sammy, her expression similarly riveted. As one, they both reach for the same bowl of popcorn and slowly take a new handful, chewing almost thoughtfully.

“... what are you guys looking at?”

They both beckon you over silently, not looking away from the screen. You and Arizona circle the desk to look over their shoulders at-

“... an imageboard?”

“2chan,” Goto and Sammy reply in simultaneous monotone. The browser's running as a picture-in-picture; the sidebar of Grokit evident on the side – a US/NATO suite of translation software that's frankly terrifying in its abilities, not yet available for civilian sales. How it got through the budget process without growing a bad acronym name you're not sure, but it was developed specifically to translate “informal language,” which is the fancy way of saying “hajis shouting AN A-10 LEG IT WE'RE HUMPED over the radio.” One of it's biggest features is the ability to recognize shortened words, the ad-hoc abbreviations and mash-up words soldiers invariably invent on deployments. “Flow of language in the battlespace” or some class-A bullshit like that. As a side-effect, it's pretty good at telling apart words that are simply incomplete based on pattern-analysis context; (to avoid mistranslating partially-transmitted words over radios and the like.) The sidebar indicates this feature is active now.

Which means you can't dismiss what you're seeing on the screen as a mere Google Translate error. Even as you watch, new messages appear with the page auto-refresh.

Ha HA! Time for more sea stories! and shipsluts

STORIES FROM THE FLEET PART SEVEN: STRAYA, CUNTS

I've only been to Australia once; my ship pulled in to port in both Brisbane and Sydney. It had been a fairly long and arduous deployment that lead us there, and when we finally arrived we were greeted with the most glorious of sounds passed over the 1MC: "Liberty call, liberty call! Liberty call for all non-duty section personnel. Liberty to expire for E-4 and below at 2300; liberty to expire for E-5 and above at 0200. Muster the duty section on the flight deck with the duty section leader."

My ship, the Tortuga, was kicked out of both ports because of the FUCKING GOD-DAMN SHITFUCK USS KITTY HAWK THOSE COCKGOBBLERS.

Brisbane was first; as it had been the first port after a lengthy period at sea (long story), I only wanted to do two things: Rest, and visit the Steve Erwin Memorial Zoo. Our visit there was cut short by a day, because a sailor on the Shitty Kitty got arrested byt the Aussie cops.

Sydney was supposed to be a full week liberty port. It was mid June when we pulled in; the late Australian autumn. We were moored up fifteen minutes by foot away from the world-famous Opera House, right in the heart of downtown Sydney.

One of the places I visited in Sydney was the suburb of MANLY. The MANLY suburb was a short ferry ride across Sydney Harbor, and was perfectly positioned inbetween the harbor and the Pacific Ocean. In the right spot, a panoramic view in MANLY would allow one to see water on both sides.

There in MANLY was the most aptly named MANLY Aquarium. What made the MANLY Aquarium unique from most, is that they offered shark tours. For a nominal fee, the MANLY Aquarium staff would suit you up in a dive suit and air tank, drop you in the main observation tank, and walk you along the tank's bottom to where the sharks congregated.

The sharks of the MANLY Aquarium were so well-fed, they didn't give a flying fuck about visitors; I was able to walk right up and pet one. It was the sea turles you had to watch out for; they didn't give a flying fuck either, they'd just take a chunk out if you were in their way.

I also visited the Opera House and got a tour of the inner workings. There was a planetarium that hosted a haunted house and archaic observatory. Sadly, what was supposed to be a seven-day port call, was once more cut short. A tropical storm was reported as being two weeks out, and the Group Commander (an Admiral), decided to send all but the Kitty Hawk out early, in order to beat the storm.

A week later I read on the Secret Squirrel message traffic that there was another liberty incident from a SHitty Kitty sailor; apparently the fucking Admiral wanted his full fucking port call, but still had that untouchable hardon to punish sailors. I'm still mad at that.

*The MANLY Aquarium has either been renamed to MANLY Waterworks, or it was one-too-many beers ago, and I just forgot the name.

The next story will be how I (almost) went to Captain's Mast.

“Arizona?” you whisper gently. “Could you take Sammy home?”

“Muuuuuuurgh,” she comments, her eyes riveted on the screen. Goto winks at you and produces a tablet from a side drawer, which he navigates to the page with. Holding the tablet in one hand and the bowl of popcorn in the other, tilting to eat out of it while watching the screen, she lets Arizona lead her out the door. You wave goodbye to the older shipgirl, who nods seriously before swinging the door shut.

It creaks on dusty hinges for an endless moment – and then the latch clicks.

“How'dthedatego?” Goto asks instantly, spinning his chair around to face you. “Looks like it went pretty well.”

You snap on his desk lamp and watch him visibly twitch as he gets a good look at you.

“THIS WAS NO DATE, BOY, NO DATE.”

Goto regards you from beneath his dark brows with an expression as blank as possible without being passive; the face of a man who's just shaken his brain and is waiting for an emotion to float up against the viewing window.

Then he starts laughing.

At first his laughing drowns out the sound of his desktop's cooling fan. Then it rises in pitch a bit till you can't hear the wind-blown rain beating on the windowpanes. It only subsides when he begins to suffocate himself, slowly sliding out of his chair to puddle on the floor under his desk, the hollow space adding a sonorous, solemnly wooden timbre to his wails of mirth.

At last, he manages to climb back into his chair, still shaky, his Inscrutable Asian Atmosphere forever shattered. “Wow,” he wheezes. “Wow. Okay. Wow. I knew that, you, but – that. That? That.” He wipes tears of mirth off his face. “Guess you made out okay.”

You nod sagely, tapping your new toy in one palm. “This new toy's not just for show!”

And like that he's off again, a little pile of giggles descending beneath the desk. He struggles upwards one more time, thrusting a desperate palm at you. “S-stop, it, g-goddamn, I can't... get up-”

“Because your soul is weighed down by gravity,” you explain matter-of-factly. This time he manages to slump over his desk and wheeze a bit – not looking at you seems to lessen the effect.

“H-how do you KNOW all that shit?”

“Half from /a/, half they taught me when the staff gave me the costume. Cosplay is serious business, you know.”

“You get reaaaaal bored in the hospital and historians don't write new books worth the dustjacket very often.” You squint at him. “So, what's your excuse?”

“Woah, woah, WOAH, check fire, check fire, lock the breeches, weapons hold,” he intones, warding you off with his palms. “It's a security thing.”

“No shit.”

“Once the government decided to use our girls, they started promoting them pretty hard – people were scared shitless. There was a food panic for a few weeks when they finally hit shipping in the Sea of Japan, airpower be damned. There were whispers of martial law and very, very loud screams in reply, to the tune of 'not that shit again'.” He shrugs. “So they made them media darlings because watching a dainty girl peeling an I-beam apart like string cheese does wonders for national morale.” He reclines in his chair again and groans. “'Course, it also happens to be the kind of thing otakus have been fantasizing about since forever. And they can get pretty fucking weird, so we thought it best to... monitor things.”

“And who did this monitoring?”

“Me,” he sighs. “And my secretary, sometimes, but she can't really read that kind of atmosphere, you know? Hate was happy to take it over.”

“Wut.” Hate's nominally in charge of the security and well-being of your USN shipgirls, although any fuckups rightly fall on you as his immediate (and immediately present) superior. But volunteering for a desk job doesn't sound like the man you know.

“He came to me asking for something else to do – I was happy to oblige. Turns out he's pretty good at it.”

“At sitting around reading a computer all day?”

“No. Shitposting. I mean, just look-” he turns the screen around for your perusal.

THE STORM THAT WIPES OUT THE PATHETIC LITTLE THING YOU CALL YOUR HARD DRIVE. YOU'RE FUCKING DEAD, KID-”

“He's got potential, I guess.” As the page auto-refreshes you can see the thread is fairly exploding – he's taken a picture of three terrified otaku who he's treed like fucking black bears. The next two pictures show that the brief impulse you'd had the other night of putting a corgi up a tree would have, a-ha, borne fruit, because apparently they're nimble enough in a thick canopy to be a credible threat. This is followed by a picture of a camera resting in a paper shopping-bag, lens pointed up (you presume for upskirt photos,) followed by a picture of the unconscious owner wearing it over his head; bloodstains clear through the paper.

“He has a bright future in... I guess it's like being a social media co-coordinator, except his entire job is to make threats on the internet both credible, and two-way affairs.” Goto snickers. “Maybe that'll cut down the creepy mail a bit. Christ.”

You finally take a seat. “So if you knew about this, why such light security?”

“They've got to get out of the base on occasion, and they'll never be comfortable if we surround them with goons.” He fishes around in his desk and produces that bottle of scotch again, ignoring your feeble protests as he fills two shot-glasses again. “How are they supposed to care about defending humanity if they never meet them?”

“You think humanity made a really good impression on Shoukaku tonight?” you ask dourly.

“Well, the guy choking out a lardass and the other one cutting a swath of terror through their sweaty neckbeard masses probably did.”

The implications of his knowledge hit you at once. “Wait, am I-”

“All over 2chan,” he says with a nod. “About a quarter of them are wishing you spontaneously combust for dating their waifu and the rest hope you'll choke out those posters next.”

You squeeze the arms of your chair till you can hear them creak.

“... and the costumes?”

“YEP,” he says with relish. “Someone made the connection about five minutes ago. It really fits you well, you know?”

“Jesus. H. Christ,” you growl.

“Don't look at me like that,” Goto says defensively. “I'm not the one that took a SHIP WHO IS ALSO A GIRL into a cafe that caters to mecha fans.”

“... so?”

“You haven't heard of mecha musume? It's a genre all about anthropomorphizing objects; especially military hardware.”

“Like, planes, tanks, whatever – that are girls. With a costume that hints at it. As you might expect it shares a lot of crossover audience with mecha fans.”

So THAT is why Hate tried to melt your brain with profanity over the phone when he found out where you were. “Well. Uh.”

“You let her pick the venue, eh?” You nod, and he laughs. “Good. It might've ended up crazy, but you let her make her own decisions and I'll bet you never questioned them, either, and that counts for a lot right there. Especially for a military girl.”

You down your scotch and remember, belatedly, that you've already got some beer in your system from dinner. You cradle that moment of concern, marveling at its warmth, before setting it free like a small bird. After your first liberty port as a young man, nothing can scare you again. Maybe because it'd kill you – which is far preferable to feeling the bottom of a gutter after every heave to make sure your stomach didn't come out entirely.

I'll take this time to interject with an idea I had regarding secretaries.
Now, not every Jap and American would be happy with Settle having a Japanese secretary, so I've come up with a solution:
Goto and Settle both have two secretaries, one Japanese, one American.
So Goto has Yamato and <insert an American ship here, Harder maybe, or wait for somebody more responsible to show up>
And Settle has Shoukaku or Naka, and Arizona.
This would be great for PR, it makes everybody seem extra cooperative.
Feedback me, anons.

They think someone went on a date. Modern Japanese borrows a lot of words from English, putting their own accent on it.

Not that English is much better. A common turn of phrase is that English doesn't just borrow words from other languages, but chases them into back alleys to bash them over the head and go through their pockets for loose vocabulary.

WHO'S READY FOR MORE STORYTIME?!

I CAN'T HEAR YOUUUUU!!!!

STORIES FROM THE FLEET PART EIGHT: When Telling The Truth Just Might Be A Bad Idea (And lying your ass off can save it)

We were moored in Subic Bay, Phillipines; it was one of our more 'regular' ports. Subic Bay used to be a US Naval Base; it was closed down and converted into a freeport back in '97, I think. It was about two weeks from my 21st birthday, and even though I had been drinking since I was 18 (the Japanese don't card, so off-base drinking was always a safe bet), I still decided to celebrate. Unfortuantely, the Task Force Group Commander had other ideas, at least at first.

The first night there I was stuck on Shore Patrol, which was usually conducted in 'commando' fashion in foreign ports. The uniform of the day was blue jeans and a polo shirt two sizes too large with "SLG" (Shore Liason Group) emblazoned on the front. The previous ship that had pulled in had carried a contingent of Marines, and one of these Marines decided he didn't want to pay for some sucky-sucky and raped a girl. The TFG Commander had put out a drinking policy of (very well defined) three-drink maximum. I knew I could handle my alcohol (at one time, my liver suffered from PTSD and just sent the alcohol straight to my bladder for proper disposal), so I decided to use this time to scout out some good watering holes.

I'm a beer drinker at heart, and one of the places I found was called the "Scuba Shack". Five dollars netted me a freshly grilled burger, fries, and a nice cold Corona. After polishing that off, I ordered a Jack and Coke, enjoying the early evening atmosphere. My liberty buddy remarked at the passing waitress (a PI national wearing a slutty cowgirl outfit with bottles of tequila in hip holsters and shot glasses in the belt), and asked if I ever had 'properly' had tequila before.

Harem shit is fine, as long as it's not the main character. Like Soujirou in Log Horizon.
>>
>>40250905
Well, one shot later, I was officially at the TFG Commander's limit of alocholic beverages. I and my buddy decided to move along to another place, slam a few more, then head back.

The only problem was, I didn't just slam down a few more. I slammed down a LOT more. I blacked out after my twentieth Jack and 'Coke' (they had become progressivley less Coke-y and more Jack-y as the night went on). I woke up the next morning at 0600 buck-naked in my bunk.

After checking to see if my ass hurt or not (it didn't, thank god), I peiced together what had happened after my last drink (Number 23, Jack with a drop of Coke to taste). I remember leaving the last place; it had started raining out. My clothes, I had discovered, were soaking wet at the foot of my bunk.

I remember standing at the foot of the brow to the ship. I do NOT remember how I got back to the ship. I remember handing my ID card over to the Command Duty Officer. I do NOT remember walking up the brow, nor the minor fall the prompted the summoning of the CDO. I remember standing, soaking wet, at the foot of my bunk, thinking how wonderful it will be to go to sleep.

I do NOT remember getting taken to Medical. I do NOT remember getting an IV jammed in my arm. I do NOT remember getting taken back to my bunk, stripped down, then tossed in. I also realized that at 0600, an hour before morning muster, I was still drunk. I was now (metaphorically), fucked.
>>
>>40250897
basic human decency?
>>
>>40250926

So, I hid. Like a bitch. While everyone was at muster, I scarpered off to my shop, awaiting the ass-reaming that my day was likely going to turn out to be. My (acting) LPO at the time was the first one in. He commenced an ass-chewing that both of us were woefully unprepared for. He then sent me to see my Chief.

Well, Chief laid into me pretty hard. He yelled about me blatantly violating lawful orders. He rhetorically asked me what my father would think (my dad is a retired Master Chief). After about fifteen minutes of the whole ship hearing him through closed doors, he asked me one question:

(I was a 3rd Class at the time) "Petty Officer Evans, does that chevron mean anything to you?"

I looked him straight in the eyes and responded, "Chief, at this moment in time; no, it does not."

"Get. Out."

Yeah, I was still drunk. This occurred at approximately 0815.

At 0945, I attended a re-enlistment ceremony for someone in my department. While standing there in formation, I wondered just how much longer I'd be a Third Class. Or if I'd even ever have the chance to re-enlist, myself. That's when it happened.

At first, my mouth felt dry. I went from the thought of "maybe I should've had more water" to "oh fuck, here it comes". The headache started out small; like the gentle lapping of waves on a gentle night on the beach. Then, the pounding swelled into a roaring crescendo that both I and the Indonesians of late-2004 knew all too well (My first deployment was Humanitarian Aid to Indonesia following the Tsunami in December of '04). I now officially had a hangover, and I was regretting every decision I had made over the past 24 hours.
>>
>>40250875
Tea may stain your teeth, but it's literally all most of the British ship-girls will drink. Though many of the destroyers are branching out their tastes.

And you have to hand it to them, it takes a solid effort to get whole fleets worth of ship-girls banned from entering Argentina.
>>40250879
The UXV combatant is a proposed drone carrier upgrade to the type 45 destroyer.
>>
>>40250944

Later that day, I was standing outside the CPO Mess, awaiting a Liberty Review Board with two other poor unfortunate souls.

(For liberty-related incidents that do not concern local-area law enforcement, there are four levels of non-judicial review: a Libery Review Board, wherein the initial summary of events in brought up and 'discussed' with the CPO Mess. Following that is a Disciplinary Review Board, chaired by the Command Master Chief; this event also takes place within the CPO Mess. If the case is not dropped or dealt with at the DRB-level, the Executive Officer's Inquiry is next. XOI takes usually takes place in the XO's stateroom, wherein facts, findings, and the moral character of the party is discussed. Usually, the 'defendant' will be accompanied and aided by his or her divisional LPO or Chief. After that is Captain's Mast, where cases are almost always never dropped. Possible non-judicial punishments range from a loss of liberty privleges, to 45 days extra duty, 45 days restriced personnel, half-month's pay, to reduction in rank.)

I was the last one to enter the Chief's Mess that day. The Chiefs acting as Arbiters that day were my division Chief, my Department Leading Chief, and three other Chiefs from other departments/divisions. I exercised proper military bearing the whole time in there. From facing movements, saluting, to marching in proper step; Boot Camp had trained me well. After a short review of the facts (I was obviously intoxicated when I came back to the ship; I had willingly surrendered my ID card; I had quite likely violated the TFG Commander's drinking policy), they asked me one final question.

"Petty Officer Evans, how many drinks did you have last night?"

I knew the safe answer was three; the bullshit arguement was always 'I'm a lightweight, I had three right before I came back to the boat. I guess they just hit me harder that I thought'.

"Twelve, Chief," I repsonded.

Holy shit I have never seen khakis explode like that.

"Twelve?!" "Holy shit, son!" "Were you out of your fucking mind?!" "Je-SUS Che-rist!" I was dismissed after they had calmed down.

Two days later, I was back again in front of the Chief's Mess with the other two poor souls. When it was my turn, I entered with the professional military bearing of a booter graduating from Great Mistakes. My uniform was so crisp with starch you could hear it crackle as I marched in five paces, did a left-face, popped out a salute, and announced myself.

The CMC was there, asking me almost the exact same questions from the LRB. His last question was how many drinks I had had on the night in question.

"Twelve, Master Chief". When you commit a lie, you always commit TO the lie.

I realized that just now. Though this si KC where gamewise marrying more than one shipgirl isn't unsuual. But Planefag would never go for it at all; like him calling a Nambu a good gun.

>>40250899
I have my favorites (most of which aren't showing up), but thanks to this quest, I'm learning how lovely Shoukaku is. Thus I'm perfectly content with her being routelocked. Anything but Kaga really.

>>40250921
Doing such a thing well takes more time/effort than one girl, and most VNs take the lazy ass way out and give us the typical harem route most revile badly.
>>
>>40250992

Well Petty Officer Evans, I admire your honesty," Master Chief responded.

I was sent back out into the passageway while the Mess deliberated. A few minutes later I was summoned back in.

"Petty Officer Evans, we have reviewed the facts of your case. In light of your moral fortitude, your honesty, and your high quality and professional skill of work, you will be confined to the ship until we return to port in Japan. Once there, you will explain to your parents, who are arriving for a Tiger Cruise, what happened on the night in question. During the Tiger Cruise, you will promulgate and present a powerpoint presentation on the Navy's Right Spirit Campaign."

It was dropped at that level. I had burnt every last good grace I had built up with the Chief's Mess. My dad had a laugh about the whole thing with my Chief during the Tiger Cruise, and the powerpoint show was a huge hit. For a while, it actually made the circuit amongst the 7th Fleet Intel Community.

Next up (hopefully after planefag makes a new thread), will be the deployment from hell).

That’s why harem shit is relegated to a side character. It isn't there to be developed, it's there as scenery for the important characters to comment on.

“I asked Shoukaku about secretaries,” you tell him. “Picking one, and all that.”

“Oh, really? Good idea. Shoukaku's pretty familiar with all the girls. Who'd she suggest?”

“Arizona, actually.”

Goto blinks. “The one who never speaks?”

You shrug. “Well, there's something to it – you saw how she reacted to Kongou. Or more to the point, didn't.”

He digests that thoughtfully. “That's... a rare quality, yeah.”

You down your second scotch, letting the warmth go off in your belly like a depth charge; the remnants of your headache almost completely forgotten. “She does have a talent of shutting down arguments by just being conspicuously silent. She kind of makes you feel like you're being silly by getting excited with all those Loud Words and such.”

Goto nods. “I hadn't really thought of it that way, but she's got a point. Anyone else?”

“Naka.”

He gives you a narrow look, now. “Naka.”

“Yeah.”

“What do you think of that?”

You think about it.

>Naka must be able to read people pretty well to put up the front she does – and that front is so disarming and hard-to-hate that she achieves an effect much like Arizona, just via the opposite direction. I think she'd be a good mediator.
>Naka needs something to get her off the front lines. She's very insecure in her ability to perform in combat; insecurities that tend to be self-fulfilling. She needs something out of the line of fire for a bit till we can get a better read on her.

They bring some tigers on board the ship, then let them loose. Sailors have to perform their duties while simultaneously avoiding tiger attacks. After a week, shipwide scores are tallied up, and the five sailors who have been mauled the least get extra liberties at the next port.

A Tiger Cruise is a family event host by a ship, usually once every year (where possible). Family of sailors fly out (or simply get picked up) to the the ship and ride it as guests for a few days to a week. Our Tiger Cruise went from Yokosuka, where we picked up the families, to Sasebo. I had been away from home for... about two and a half years at that time, and it was good to spend time with my parents. My dad was a Nuke Master Chief on subs, so he had a blast with the Engineering Department on my ship.

The SLQ-32 (muh bebbeh) was conceived in the 60's, designed in the 70's, and deployed fleet-wide in the 80's.

And it still works better than anything else on the market. Take of that what you will.

We had a magnetic tape reader on our console before the fleet-wide hardware update got to us (PCI cards).

MAGNETIC FUCKING TAPES. And we still had a big ol' box of them that were highly classified that we couldn't just trash.

Hey, don't knock magtape. It's STILL the single most information-dense storage medium.
>>
>>40251720
To be fair magnetic tape is top tier for stable, long-term archiving
>>
>>40251720
PCI or PCMCIA?

>>40251757
Yeah but there's a difference between 50-year-old magtape technology and the current stuff.
>>
>>40251720
>>40251661
These are both incredibly stable ways to store data, just so you know.
>>
I guess the overall morale of the story is that new does not always mean better.
>>
>>40251757

For what we used it for, I could've condensed all the mag tapes we had onto one CD.

>>40251786

No clue; too many beers ago. Join the Navy as a spook and find out! plsdon't

PCMCIA are the ones about the size of a credit card and ~3mm thick you plug into the computer from a slot somewhere.
PCI are the ones you need to open up the computer to install.

I remember the very first laptop I had had a slot for the former. The screen was less than 10" across.
