Your name is John Cairn, and you have no clue what you jumped into. Your dad was an infamous superhero known as The Red Rider, and he showed up dead in an alley about three months ago. When you were checking out a storage unit you inherited from him, everything changed. You gained his powers, a brain able to calculate faster than light, and an uncanny affinity for machinery.

Using your powers, you were easily able to get into the world's top engineering college, Central Cosmopolis Institute. But just as you were ready to leave everything behind in your hometown, Comet City, and move on, one of your dad's "co-workers" stopped by. He had an envelope from your dad, inside was the key to a safehouse in Cosmopolis, and a letter from The Red Rider.

The letter told you many things, including the identity of the murderer, Menace, a supervillain with unknown abilities. It also instructed you to find Professor Brend to get into the safehouse, collect your dad's investigation notes, and give them to his friend Mr. Salvos. But he left you the choice to pursue Menace as The Red Rider, or let sleeping dogs lie.

You have just arrived at CCI and have a whole list of things to do. But you know orientation starts at 10AM sharp. You drove all night and arrived at 7:45 PM. You recently picked up your room assignment.

You figure that you should probably settle in before doing anything else. You check the number on your room key and find that you stay in the dorm right next to the engineering building. What a coincidence, really, you're shocked. You must be going unhinged again because you swear your thoughts sounded sarcastic. So unless you unconciously use your powers, that must be an exhaustion thing. Opening the door to your room, you find somebody else unpacking. Your roommate has set up his side of the room to look like something from an engineers wet dream. There are blueprints all over the walls, a drafting table over by his desk, he even has a 3D printer.

"Hey, I'm Harry, and I'm guessing you're my roommate?", he says while extending his hand. Gee, regular Holmes here, and there it is again.

"Yeah, I'm Thomas, nice to meet you.", You grab his hand and shake it. He seems to have a pretty weak grip, and his hands are cold. If you had to guess, he's nervous.

"Now, I gotta ask, are you a rich kid who can afford this place, or a smart kid who got invited?", He seems a little joking with this, but you know he wants an answer.

>"Yeah, totally rich, showed up in a Rolls Royce, now get away peasant." (Joking)

"Yeah, totally rich, showed up in a Rolls Royce, now get away peasant.", you say mockingly. Maybe you also have sarcasm powers, that must be it.

"Haha, but you see I am no peasant, I am both smart and wealthy! Well, the first part isn't entirely true, but the second part is! Haha!", he says, adopting a tone that reminds you of Inigo Montoya. That was a great movie, no wait, stop getting on tangents.

"Yeah, but seriously, what did you come here to study? I'm doing civil engineering.", he asks, seeming to get a little more confident.

You never really considered that, you can probably do whatever you want. You have a supercomputer for a brain, nothing is off limits. This will be problematic.

"I'm doing a dual major in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, with a focus on Nanorobotics.", Damn, that is the understatement of the year. A "focus" on Nanorobotics means you have already created a workable prototype.

"Damn! And I thought I was reaching when I wanted to do Civil and Mechanical.", He seems rather impressed, but that was the intended reaction. Maybe.

"Well, I have to finish unpacking, then I was gonna hit the sack. I have the left side, you got the right." He gestures to each side and goes back to unpacking things and hooking up things to his computer.

You start unpacking stuff and about halfway through, you notice that Harry is in his bed, fast asleep. Now would probably be the time to unpack the suit and your Micro-Actuators. You really should come up with a better name for them.

Like a squirrel stashing food for the winter, you place the Micro-Actuators in a place nobody will dare look. Shit, your internal monologue is doing that stupid thing again. But anyway, you command them to form a sheet under your mattress. Then you pull the suit out and put it behind everything else in the closet. Worst case, you say that you cosplayed as The Red Rider.

After unpacking everything else and setting up the computer you glance at the hard drive again. It calls to you like a roast beef sandwich calls to a hobo in the winter. What the fuck are you even thinking about, you really need rest, you're beginning to think that is what keeps you in control. Maybe you should talk to Professor Brend about it, he knew your dad, maybe he knows how to deal with this.

Still, that hard drive has the designs for the Hyper-Processors, and maybe the Potential Engine is worth another look. Then again, your bed is looking awfully comfy, is this how geniuses feel? I could either keep my saity in check, or make a death ray and wipe out all who ever scorned me. Now Frankenstein makes a bit more sense.

>Instability reduced to 5

You take some deep breaths and think about puppies. Surprisingly, it helps, it's like that old phrase, "Just lay back and think of England", no, that isn't the phrase you were looking for. Whatever, your brain has been doing some weird stuff lately and that hardly makes the list. You stay focused on what you have to do tomorrow, and commit it to memory. Go to orientation, talk to Professor Brend, get a patent started, maybe work on that hard drive.

Before you know it, you drift into a calm, relaxing slumber. You dream of back when you were a kid and Dad bought you your very own Gameboy. It was one of the kind that flipped open, you don't remember what they were called, and he opened it up and showed you how it worked. It was mostly babble to you, but the fact that he was so interested in it got you interested too. By the end of the day, you and Dad had put it together and taken it apart at least three times. For the first time since he died, you remember how much your dad cared.

The alarm blares and you wake up feeling chipper and upbeat. Today is the day that you truly experience CCI, and it feels glorious. Harry groans and rolls out of bed. Obviusly he didn't sleep very well.

"Wha time sit?" Harry slurs out in a groggy stupor. You check the clock 7:30AM.

"It's 7:30 Harry, and orientation is in two and a half hours.", you say while putting on your clothes. You decided that a blue polo and khakis would do for a first impression.

"Okay... I'm up, are you always this awake?" Harry mumbles out while clumsily putting on his jeans.

"I don't know, but maybe I'll make a habit of it.", you cheerily tell him. You have been doing really well with this calming down thing, maybe it's getting better?

Eh, whatever, you have stuff to do.

While Harry is fumbling around in the dorm bathroom getting washed up, you will the Micro-Actuators to enter their jar again. They all whir to life and heed your call. You then take the full jar and put it in your backpack. You want to show these to Professor Brend before anyone knows about them, that or get a patent, but he would probably know how to do that.

WAIT! Know how to do that... you never thought to look it up! You can figure out how in seconds when you have time, probably right after orientation and Professor Brend.

But there always is the most important meal of the day, and you can't wait to eat your first meal at this super high-tech college. What will it be? you knock on the door to the bathroom and yell in.

"Hey Harry, I'm gonna go get breakfast, try not to fall asleep in there!", With that taken care of you head down the stairs and follow the signs to the cafeteria. Like all the other buildings, it stands as a pristine glass monolith in the college's circular design.

Too bad that the food isn't as pristine, they haven't ordered food for everyone yet because it's still two weeks until everyone gets here. So you're stuck with your favorite syndicated bran cereal.

You wave at Harry and he gets some cereal too, then comes over and sits across from you. He decided to wear a T-shirt for a band you don't recognize and jeans with sneakers. It's obvious that he doesn't care about making a first impression at the school.

"Hey Harry, let's go see if we can find some other people to sit with. No offense, but I think I should get to know more than one person at school." If you get to know more people you could probably get an idea of what the level of competition at the school is, and making friends never hurt anybody.

"Yeah, let's do that, I don't know anybody either." He seems rather nervous, but you probably are too, after all, you never get a second chance at a hole in one. What even was that saying, you should stop using those, you seem to mess them up a lot.

At one of the other tables is a group of four girls chattering about something you can't make out. Another table has three guys who strike you as the typical nerds, big glasses, dress shirts with pocket protectors, making light conversation about some kind of anime. The only other table you see looks like it should have a velvet rope separating it from the rest of the cafeteria, Everyone at it has either some kind of expensive suit on or an expensive dress, ten in all, laughing about something

You point over at the table with the girls at it, "There, it's time to put on the charms and good looks Harry." He gives you a raised eyebrow and a devilish grin as a response.

"As always my friend, as always." You and Harry walk over to the table and start getting into the conversation, they seem to be talking about some bands you know a bit about. But a bit to you is like an expert to everyone else, they are all rather impressed that you know so much and have so many good opinions on SilverStreak. By the time orientation is starting up, at least two of the girls have taken a shine to you. Harry also seems to be having a good time talking to a short blonde one, you think her name is Monica, about heavy metal. Oddly enough, they aren't just music aficionados, Monica is studying Acoustics, while both Jen and Stella are studying Chemical Engineering, and Jean is studying Architecture.

"Okay everyone, get together over by the front door, it's time for the tour to start." The man saying all of this is balding and has a ridiculous mustache, but he seems fine enough. "I am Mr. Armstrong and I teach the Culinary program, if you have any questions, please wait until the end of the tour." He walks through the doors and you're off. He leads you through the campus showing you all the buildings, but you gloss over all but two and a single name. "...and this is the Engineering building, included in the tuition are all the funds you need to use the equipment in this building. All you need are some safety courses and..." DID HE JUST SAY YOU COULD USE THE EQUIPMENT! Calming yourself down from a mental orgasm, you pay attention again. "... and this is the Science building, it used to be lumped in with the Engineering building, but we got enough funding to build this one. If you schedule with Professor Brend you can use the labs for any research you want..." Did he just say Professor Brend? Well now you know where to find him.

Time for some answers, but not to the questions he's asking about. Real answers. You wave to Harry and the girls and bolt for the Science building. You didn't know you could run this fast and before you know it, you're in the lobby.

"Hey, I need to talk to Professor Brend.", You cough out while trying to catch your breath.

The secretary smiles, "Okay, he isn't busy, so you can go right on into his office, second door to the left."

"Thank you.", and then you're back to running down the hall. you get to his offcie and quickly rap on the door. It opens with a creak and standing in front of you is an old man in a crisp white lab coat.

"Hello, who are you?" he says with a voice that reminds you of a stereotypical old man.

"I'm Thomas Cairn and I was told you were a friend of my dad and you know where I need to go and-" He suddenly pulls you into his office and slams the door.

"Will you calm down and say that quietly?", he says losing his old voice and speaking sternly.

"My dad said to talk to you about a safehouse." You don't want to give away too much now that you calmed down. Especially if this guy doesn't know as much as he lets on.

"So you're his boy, here's the address, shouldn't be too hard to find." He hands you a folded slip of paper and seems to have adopted his old man voice again.

"Thank you." Now you can finally get those notes and be done with these crazy spy games, not to mention the fact that Dad probably had more schenatics in this safehouse than the storage unit. The idea of getting more of those leaves you drooling.

"Oh, and by the way, if you're even half as gifted as your dad, you should get through your program in about a year and a half. To be honest, you probably already can test out of most of the courses. Just don't do anythng conspicuous during that time and you could just say you're a genius." So he does know, that's a relief, especially if you keep making those schematics. Speaking of which, didn't you mean to show him the Micro-Actuators?

"Could you help me with patenting, I don't know where to start." You say rather sheepishly, admitting you don't know something is weird.

"I can help with that, just fill out the patent application, have a firm ceck it out to see that it's done correctly, then send it off to the Patent Office. The patent takes about 2 years, but the product can be exploited right after it is sent in as a patent pending." You think you caught that, so now you just need to print off that form and see some people about it.

"Thank you Professor Brend." It would have taken forever if you didn't know to have a firm check it out.

He nods at you and you head out, giving the secretary a smile on the way out. You want to jump on that address right away, so you go out to your car and start it up. You use your phone GPS to find the way and drive to the address Professor Brend gave you. It turns out to be a small house in the inner city, not really your style, but functional.

You turn the key in the knob and a small beep rings out, the door swings inward to reveal a lab with manufacturing equipment, computer banks, a whole range of stuff you barely understand. On a desk in the back of the room you find a single paper file labelled "Menace"

Supervillain Name: Menace

Real Name: Unknown

Appearance: Unknown

Powers: Psionics or Temporal Manipulation

Description: The only photo taken of Menace is the one shown above, taken by [Redacted] by taking a low exposure photograph. Any more enhancement shows no figure standing there. As far as I can tell, Menace is able to scrub himself clean from people's memories, this is why nobody has ever seen him commit a crime. I have considered the possibilities and only a Psion or a skilled Chronopath could do it. If I die, you will know I am close to the truth.

Ho boy.

You decide to just hand off the file to Mr. Salvos, he knows what to do with it, but not before making a copy just in case. He picks it up, you exchange a few pleasantries, and he leaves, simple as that. You go home and get some rest for the coming storm of the US Patent Office. Surprisingly, you write up the paperwork and the first time it's correct. You send it into the Patent office and think about how to sell those Micro-Actuators as a business.

Well if they can process data fast and be used for AI they can also be used for a defensive targetting system.
A processor is a processor, sure they can have some components specified (e.g. GPUs have special components and commands for operating matrixes) for one thing or another but in general data is data.

>>
>>40246625

Indeed. I think what we should do, even if we do assemble JARVIS, is get something like each Microprocessor being an independent system completely capable of operating on its own, but can network together to get a bit smarter (kinda like geth). So we can still get Jarvis, but literally scatter a few hundred pieces everywhere we go to get some dumb-watchers, which can network to then scan everything. It'd be fun if we ever get to the BBEG ending, by which point we've scattered several tons of the stuff, forming this omniscient being that just crushes him.

Fair enough. Guess we'll have to research nanobots first XD
>>
>>40246789
P-please no, not again
>>
You guys can totally suggest new tech that builds off of previous tech, Rule of Cool is a friend.
>>
>>40246843
Gotta keep making those nanobots smaller and smaller.
>>

Okay. Wetware and circuitry that is made, maintained, and constantly modified for efficiency via nanotech, allowing for the suit to interface with the circuitry, and also permmitting any "Theoretical Physics" effects (such as cloaking technology) we might be able to dip into later.

So this?
Further down the tree my friend.

....you're no fun.

Alright then, how about bio-medical nanomachine route? That's what the majority of nanotech IRL is on anyways.
>>
>>40247099
Already had it planned, but you would need to research a bit more Biology to assure safety. That is... if you care about safety.
>>
>>40247150
I would say outsource the biology, but can we buy the textbooks and just not attend the classes?
>>
>>40247174
As is, you'll probably test out of it. The problem is that you would need to devote time to refining them to make it safe.
>>
>>40247174
Why would we not study biology?
Do you not want to be a complete scientist?
>>
>>40247232
This isn't "studying biology". You already know college level Biology to a tee, that's why you can make them possible to integrate in the first place. Assuring that the body accepts them is expert level stuff worthy of at least one Tech Point.

Fair enough. We need to drop some research and tech points into making sure they're people-safe.
