The Imperial troops haven't attacked the Valkyrur's temple yet. They just surrounded the place from a respectful distance and set up a few defensive positions. Truth be told, while you're currently cornered, the Imperials aren't much better off. It's just open desert with some sporadic cover from rocks or ancient ruins out here. Using chemical weapons would be inadvisable, to say the least.

Your squad has gathered near the temple's entrance, ready to respond if the Imperials do attack.

"It looks like we're outnumbered about five to one," Vanessa says. "This really doesn't look good. I mean, we could probably make it out, but there's no way the whole army could."

"In practice, it's close to two to one," you say. "Even if they have this place surrounded, they can't all charge our position at once. We can grind them down if we're careful."

"That's a mighty big 'if,'" Karl says. "Has there been word from General Gunther yet?"

"He's still evaluating our options," you say.

"And the Imperials are evaluating their options," William says. "Except they have more than we do."

>"John Konrad wouldn't have betrayed Gallia for no reason. This is a chance to know more about the Empire's plans."
>"John Konrad and the 33rd must be crucial to the Imperial invasion. This is a chance to remove one of their most important assets."
>"When it comes down to it, soldiers only have two options: survival or death."

"Still, this is a good opportunity for us," you say. "The Imperials must have been planning on the 33rd joining them, and Konrad must know something about their plans. This is a chance to learn what the Empire is up to and to take out one of their most important military assets."

"I'm always up for your optimism, boss," Karl says, smiling.

"If I didn't look on the bright side of things, I'd have to be drunk all the time," you say.

"Wait, I think I see something moving," Vanessa says, pointing towards the Imperial camp.

You pick up your rifle and check the situation through your scope. A trunk is rolling towards, but it stays out of range of your guns. You see John Konrad in the passenger seat, still wearing his Gallian uniform. The truck stop and Konrad steps out, holding up a bullhorn.

"Belgen!" Konrad's voice echoes through the desert. "Don't make this more difficult than it has to be. All you need to do is surrender. We'll take you and your men prisoner, and you can live to see the end of this war. You can see your son again."

The Gallian soldiers gather among themselves and whisper among themselves, waiting for General Gunther's reply.

General Gunther soon arrives, carrying his own bullhorn. He stands to the side of the entrance and speaks.

"Go FUCK yourself, John."

"Yeah." You hear Konrad's voice again. "I figured you'd say that. What about you, Captain de Velde? I know you're there. You saved a lot of my men once. I don't mind letting you and your squad walk away."

You look up to General Gunther. He shrugs and offers you the bullhorn.

Treason is a capital offence, hopefully punishable by death in Gallia.

You take up the bullhorn and yell out your answer.

"I'm fine right where I am now, Konrad. Are you?"

"You're still too young, de Velde," Konrad says. "You too, Belgen. All citizens are taught to fight for Gallia if necessary. But that's not exactly true, is it?"

"What's your point?" You ask.

"The royal family isn't on the front line, right?" Konrad asks. "Even though they possess the blood of the Valkyrur, even though they're supposed to have the power of gods, they're making us fight for them. You never thought about that, did you? But I did. That's why I'm the only one who realized it's all bullshit."

You pass the bullhorn back to General Gunther.

"Was he always this crazy?" You ask.

Gunther sadly shakes his head.

"My contacts in the Empire showed me the truth." Konrad continues his rant. "They showed me the true flame of the Valkyrur. They showed me the true children of the gods. This war will lay the foundation of Europa's future. The Empire will unite the continent and offer it as a tribute to the Valkyrur. There will be no more false kings. There will be no more wars. The world will finally be at peace."

Konrad pauses for a moment.

"I'll give you until tomorrow at dawn to change your mind, Belgen," he says. "Otherwise, I'll have to eliminate your forces."

Konrad gets back into the truck and drives away. Gunther can only sigh and shake his head.

"Captain de Velde, meet me in half an hour," he says. "We'll go over our plans then."

"Yes, sir."

There's an odd tension in the air as the General leaves. Everyone is thinking about Konrad's words.

"Do you think it's true?" Vanessa asks. "The things Konrad said about the Valkyrur."

>"It's all bullshit. Has to be."
>"Maybe. But that doesn't change anything."

"It doesn't matter," you say. "We can't trust the Empire's peace."

"That's right," Vanessa says. "Gallia has its problems, but the Empireā€¦ Things would be a lot worse for us there."

You're not sure if she's talking about Darcsen or about the squad. Probably both, all things considered.

"I'm going to take a look around before meeting the General," you say. "Karl, you're in charge until I come back."

"Yes, sir."

The temple's straightforward structure doesn't allow for a lot of detours, but you walk a circuit around the makeshift camp to gauge the army's morale. From what you can tell, it's not good, but it's not terrible either. Mostly, people seem uncertain, but hopeful that General Gunther is going to find some way to resolve the situation.

You reach General Gunther's command post and take a seat. Half the commanding officers have already arrived, and the others soon join you.

"I'm sure you're all aware of the situation," General Gunther says. "Konrad's given us until tomorrow at dawn to surrender. That gives us some time to prepare."

"We have three options." The General continues. "The first option is to simply prepare a defense, wait for the Imperials to attack and grind them down until they have to retreat. That'll be the easiest plan, but it could also get us all killed. The second option is to launch a preemptive attack during the night and break through the encirclement. It'd be extremely risky and there would probably be significant losses - reorganizing the troops will be impossible during the retreat - but it should ensure that at least some of us make it out of here alive. The third option is to assassinate as many officers as possible during the night and launch an attack just before dawn. The timing of this operation would have to be absolutely perfect, otherwise the enemy will know we're up to something, but if we do succeed, we'll have a high chance of victory with minimal casualties."

So, it's a choice between a defensive battle, a chaotic assault, and a carefully planned assassination followed by a surprise attack.

The officers begin to discuss the plan among themselves.

>"We should stay on the defensive. That way, we can take advantage of our position."
>"We should try to force our way out. Even if there are losses, we can't stay here either."
>"We should assassinate the enemy officers and follow up with a surprise attack. It'll be the surest way to victory."

But do set up those defenses, and leave a sizable enough force behind that we have an avenue for retreat (and resistance should the Imperials try to take it anyway) should the need arise.

"Let's go with the assassinations," you say. "We can't stay on the defensive and if the army falls into complete chaos, we won't be able to accomplish anything. We have snipers to pull it off."

"Are you sure?" General Gunther asks. "If you're spotted, you'll be stuck alone and surrounded by enemies."

"Been there, done that," you say. "Just give us the details."

"All right," General Gunther says. "The sunrise will be at 6:20AM. I expect the officers will need to be up earlier. That's why, at 6:05AM, we'll be launching an attack while our snipers assassinate their targets. De Velde, I'll have you take care of Konrad. Everyone else will pick their targets as they're available. Take a few hours to rest. The snipers will assemble at midnight to synchronize their watches and sort out the rest of the details. Dismissed."

"Yes, sir."

As the General says, timing will be critical. You'll all need to take out your targets at the exact same time as the main force attacks. If you pull it off, the resulting chaos will cripple the Imperial army. If you don't pull it off, you'll probably be killed.

You return to your squad to tell them the good news.

"The General's ordered us to assassinate as many enemy commanders as possible," you say. "I'll head out beforehand to prepare. You'll be joining the main force to attack the Imperials just before dawn. If all goes well, I'll be able to meet up with you as soon as I'm done. Otherwise, Karl's in charge of infantry and Danielle's in charge of the tank. You'll be able to take care of yourselves."

"We'll get the job done no matter what it takes," Karl says.

"Sure, sure," Nina says. "Just make sure we don't stumble across your bleeding body."

"You're never going to let that go, are you?" You ask.

"Not any time soon," Nina says. "Just think of it as something else to look forward to once the war's over."

"That'll cheer me right up," you say.

You need to rest before you go - it'll be a long night and you can't afford to doze off - but you do have some time to spare.

"I'm going to see Ernestine for a bit," you say.

Nina stares at you flatly.

"You want to get laid now?" She asks.

"Maybe, maybe not," you say. "I'll send you a copy of my official report and let you know."

"I think we can all pass on that," Karl says. "But good luck with the mission, boss."

"Keep your luck," you say. "You'll need it more than I will."

Captain DuLac and her squad have settled not to far from you. You see Ernestine talking to the Captain - getting her orders, most likely - and you wait off to the side for them to finish. When they're done, Ernestine spots you and waves you over to a small corner between the wall and a Valkyrur statue. You follow her and find a small spot with a blanket and a pillow.

"I heard you volunteered us for an interesting job," she says. "Good job."

"Hey, so long as we get paid." You absentmindedly stare at the blanket.

"Forget it," Ernestine says. "This place is a little too public for me. I don't mind if it's just sleep though. We'll both need it."

"I'll hide my crushing disappointment." You slip into the blanket and rest your head on the pillow. Ernestine cuddles up next to you.

"What do you think of this mission?" You ask.

"It's the best course of action given the situation," Ernestine says. "At the very least, it'll be better than fighting in the trenches."

"I suppose that's right," you say.

It's still day out and the soldiers are moving around, but the atmosphere is subdued. It takes you a surprisingly short amount of time to fall asleep. You wake up what seems like seconds later when Ernestine pokes you in the rubs.

"Get up," she says. "We need to get going."

"Already?" You mumble and pull yourself up. "I guess I'll need to wake up properly on the way there."

"Here, let me help you with that." She stands on her toes and kisses your cheek. It does wake you up a little. "Just remember to be careful out there."

"You be careful too." You wrap your arms around Ernestine and pull her into a hug. "I love you."

Her body stiffens slightly. You can almost feel the heat radiating off her blushing cheeks. You bite your lip to keep yourself from laughing.

"I can tell my the way you keep staring at my ass," she says.

"It's all I ever think about." As you let go of Ernestine, you briefly slip one hand under her skirt and squeeze lightly. "It's both soft and firm."

"I am going to get you back for this," she says. "No matter what it takes."

"I was being serious, you know," you say.

"Of course I know," Ernestine says. "But I still need to get you back. Come on. This was your suggestion, so you can't be late."

General Gunther, his aides and most of the snipers in the army are gathered near the temple's entrance. The General goes over the details, but you've already heard it all before. The only new part is the areas assigned to the other snipers, but that doesn't concern you. You just sit back and wait until it's time to synchronize your watches.

You're the first one to head out. You're still behind the Gallian defenses, so you don't need to worry about sneaking around yet, and you can decide how you want to approach the Imperial forces.

You decide to sneak around the back of the temple. Progress is slow and you're forced to move a little too close to the Imperial positions for your confirm. If it wasn't for all the time you spent learning how to command troops on the battlefield and track their various positions, you're not sure you would have been able to make it through.

Fortunately, you manage to circle around the temple and go through a wide gap in their encirclement. You go a bit farther to put more distance between them and you before you stop to have a look.

The Imperial guns - and tank cannons - are all pointed in the temple's direction. Some of them might be looking outward for reinforcements or desert hazards, but under the cover of night, sneaking past them shouldn't be excessively difficult.

You also spot a number of patrols walk through the Imperial camp. They should be passing by the officers' tent. You'd have to get a little closer, but if you shadowed them from a distance, they might even take you to Konrad's tent.

You follow the patrols from a distance. You can more or less guess what their routes are and where one patrol relays to another. You switch your target whenever it's necessary, making sure to keep an eye on your surroundings. You're forced to enter the Imperial camp itself a few times, but most of the soldiers are asleep, so it's not all that difficult.

As you suspected, the patrols go around ammunition crates, barrels of water and several tents that look nicer than the ones that are stuffed with normal soldiers. It makes sense - the officers need to be kept safe, and the patrols need to be nearby to receive orders in case of an emergency. You're not certain you'll be able to recognize Konrad's own tent, but you should be able to find someone important to kill once you're done scouting the area.

You keep following the patrols deeper and deeper into the camp. It takes you hours, but every step takes you closer to the heart of the Imperial force.

Unfortunately, the security is also getting tighter. There's a checkpoint nearby that you can't sneak around unless you want to lose the patrol. You might find the patrol again, but it'd be difficult. However, you might be able to distract the guards with a distraction. There are a few ragnite lamps around and a lot of tents. All it takes is one broken lamp to set a tent and the guards will have to move. It might arouse suspicion, but a simple fire shouldn't cause too much of a ruckus. So long as you don't get caught, it'll just be written off as an accident.

You dart around the guard post. You've got a rough map of the camp in your head and you know the general direction the patrol was heading in. You should be able to find them again. Right?

You move between the tents and the equipment, always keeping an eye out for signs of life to make sure you don't get caught.

You soon find the patrol you were stalking again. They're standing in front of a tent, speaking to an officer. You take a closer look through your rifle's scope.

It's Konrad.

The attack is still a few hours away, so you can't kill him - it would just give the Imperials time to reestablish their chain of command. No, you need to wait.

Konrad returns to his tent and the patrol leaves. You take a look around. There's a flag next to the tent, but there are a lot of flags in a lot of places. It's not a very good marker. You could get closer, maybe cut or mark the flag to clearly identify Konrad's tent and spot more easily when it is time to make your shot. Or maybe it'd be better if you pulled back and found a place to wait.

You withdraw from the camp and look for a dune or rock or something that will give you a good place to snipe from. You eventually decide to split the difference and settle on top of a rock that's jutting out of a dune. You take a blanket out of your pack and begin to spread sand on top of it to provide camouflage. Then you slip under the blanket and place your rifle against the rock. You're practically buried under there and there are only a few holes big enough to let in air. Even your rifle, set against the flat of the rock, is almost completely covered. No one will be able to see you.

You sweep your rifle across the camp and spot the general area of Konrad's tent. After that, you wait out the hours. Under the light of a small ragnite lamp, you keep one eye on the time.

Your shot has to be absolutely perfect.

The soldiers start to get up at around 5. Konrad doesn't come out until a few minutes before 6. He was probably exercising or doing some other work in his tent. It doesn't matter anymore. You keep your scope on him, adjusting your barrel for the distance and light wind, and wait. Konrad is speaking with officers around his tent.

One minute passes. Then two. Then three.

Then five. It's time.

You pull the trigger.

The bullet shoots out and goes right through the left side of Konrad's skull. The exit wound on his right looks like a blooming flower or blood and brain and bone. The impact of the bullet is enough to throw his body off-balance and he falls, dead.

"Time for me to get back to the squad."

You throw off the blanket and stuff the important equipment back in your bag. Then you head back towards the Gallian camp at a run. You can already here the sound of tank and mortar shells in the distance. General Gunther has begun his attack.

You slow down just enough to glance at the Imperial camp. The soldiers are running around, trying their best to put up a defense, but even from where you're standing, it's clear they're disorganized. The other snipers must have succeeded in their missions as well. The Imperials probably expected the Gallian attack, but they didn't expect to lose so many officers at the exact same time.

Now it's time to get back to your squad and finish this off.

And that's all for today. Next thread will be next Wednesday at around 7PM EST. As always, thanks for playing and goodnight.

Thanks for running but why run so short?

Thanks for running.

Goodbye, Konrad.

I wonder if he was already dead when we made the shot -- it'd be an appropriate mirror to the source game...
