By the time you ended with our daily dosage of dehydrated food and other rations the sun had already started ascending and advancing. Along with your team you started marching soon in direction towards the mainland. You were kind of sorrowful for all the technology that you had to abandon and the vile xenos would surely loot and disrespect, as you walked you also looked at the now cold and silent broken skull of Morti. The wounded continued being transported on the two Chimeras while the rest walked and stood on alert to avoid any other attack. The female ogryn Nala violently rejected being transported on the chimera and instead travelled on your side, she seemed to be pretty protective of you and oddly apparently believed that you were impaired or disabled.

Nala always pointed to you where obstacles were even if they were in plain sight, maybe her childlike mind couldn’t comprehend that while you lacked eyes you didn’t lacked sight. On your back your augmented ears caught several jokes and witty comments about you two, a specially crude and distasteful joke involved your bionics having a “Vibratio” option for her pleasure.

Trying to be positive at least we were out of the forest and entering some plains, right now, any kind of attack or approach would be detected beforehand, or so we thought. From the clouds above your heads a group of at least a hundred winged Kroot from the Sweeping Claws tribe descended in a triangular formation, you weren’t their objective as they simply flew straight ignoring your team completely and dived into an apparently empty area.

For your surprise that area was far from devoid, there were some Kroot from the Mantle tribe hiding on hills and camouflaged trenches waiting for your approach. The aerial approach of the Sweeping Claws didn’t only reveal their position but also started attacking them.
>>
>>40216555
It seemed that the winged Kroot were more primitive tech-wise as instead of stolen weaponry they used their own manufactured rifles and what looked like Sulphur bombs. It was also notable that both their fingers and toes were armored and turned into deadly claws that they used to attack. If an enemy proved to be too deadly some of the flying Kroot teamed together to grab it with their extremities and elevate it from the ground, from that moment on the attacker was dead, if the blood loss or their attacks didn’t finish it off the massive fall that came afterwards would do it.

In an instant the sound of exploding powder and laser guns filled the horizon, the battle was really violent, maybe it was some kind of past strife between the two tribes or maybe they were competing for the great reward, fresh human flesh.

All of you stopped on your tracks looking at the distant intertribal fight. Unknowing what to do you just got tense and readied yourself in case the surviving tribe decided to attack.

You halt the team by raising your arm and quickly give a check to the weapons and armor of your teammates. They are all in a good condition.

As the entire team looks at the battle in the distance you all start chanting the litanies of the good-shoot and praises directed to the Emperor.

The wounded are left on the ground and taken care by a medicae guardsman and also Wurgen for an extra firepower just in case. Mounted on the two Chimeras the rest of the team rushes into the battle.

From the window port you are able to see how you approach the battlezone and how the first casualties start to happen. The drivers do not hesitate into running over those vile xenos, at least four are instantly killed or have their wiry yet muscular limbs torn from the impact. The potent chassis of the Chimera is easily able to cross the crudely done trenches and more than one unwary Kroot ends decapitated as the transport runs over their feeble skulls.
>>
>>40217076

Just as the two vehicles have ran all over the battlefield all the doors and hatches of the Chimera are opened at the same time, each one of us taking a space to shoot and cover.

Everywhere you look all you can see are dead bodies of Kroot from both tribes. The first salvo of gunfire blasts the xenos that are the closest but soon they all move away trying to get some distance to shoot at or find a cover to heal themselves.

The two transport tanks seems to be possessed by pure machine hatred for all the abominations that those two tribes have done to what the true and pure technology is supposed to mean and represent.

Kroot from both The Mantle and the Sweeping Claws fall under your threads while still infighting each other, not even against a common enemy those savage aliens can unite. Running over the flying aliens is harder as they have increased mobility but at the end their primitive style makes them try to attack and claw the hull of the vehicle and sooner or later fall under the massive weight of the tanks.

At the end only a couple of carnivores remain from each tribe, both seems to be the leaders of each kindred as they have some strange hood like decorations made from pelts on their faces and also generally more decoration on their disgusting bodies. Their bladed rifles and crude swords are covered in blood and guts from each other's tribe.

The two strange leaders look at the imposing and fuel spitting Chimera transports and then at each other. Instead of infighting and dying they end sniffing the air while having their entire bodies tensed up and ready to run away at any time.

With the drivers pushing the accelerator as hard as they can they can the two Kroot continue on their positions, kind of playing a game of chicken that they cannot win. Just as the two tanks are about to run over them they scream and move away.

The leader of The Mantle points at the Chimera where Karelia and half of the bodyguards travelled and screamed the following cryptic message:

"NGYAAH A GOOD FIGHT. BATTLE MAKES US STRONG AND YOU HAVE GOOD GENES IN THERE! SPECIAL GENES! STRANGE GENES!"
>>
>>40217433

Distracted by his shouting we were assaulted by the other Kroot leader that using his wings gets on top of the vehicle and sticks his beak into one of the window ports. At first we thought that it was an savage and unintelligent attempt to bite us but the winged alien didn't opened its beak, but its nostrils. With a strong aspiration the carnivore seemed to get impregnated of our essence as after that it immediately flew away to an unknown location.

We were unable to finish the winged fiend but the other Kroot leader soon went down thanks to Karelia's psychic powers.

After the fight you moved out of the vehicle to check the damage they managed to make on it. With the exception of a few scratches and indentations the chassis was near perfect. You lamented not having the necessary tools and equipment to repair it but chanting a few litanies of comfort would make the two machine spirits become calmed, for now at least.

Looking around you saw dozens of bodies around, most mutilated and destroyed beyond any recognition. This was a great fight, not a hunt. Your team didn't knew if all those kills should be associated with the two drivers and thus they ended discarding getting part of their bodies as proofs.

After picking up the wounded people once again the team decided to fight one last "Fuck you" to the aliens you and your team burned the rests, not to show your respects but as a way to stop the Kroot from using those rests to strengthen themselves.

>>
>>40217450
>Continue advancing to the mainland.

One of those beasts have gathered your scent and that's more than enough. Moving and advancing is the best option now.

Without hesitation all the team starts marching towards an unexplored region of the planet. Your muscles have never been so exercised in a long time and cramps start to form on your thighs. This was just another reason to leave the weak flesh behind and exchange it for the perfectly smelted, crafted and circuited bionic equivalents.

Your robotic arms and legs were still as strong and efficient as the first day of your installation. It was true that you had to get them some oil from time to time but that was the norm on every machine. It was just as normal as breathing is for every living being.

After almost an entire day of walking and no other encounter with other teams or xenos your team reached one of the rendezvous points. Still would have to pass thirteen days until the ships came onto your arrival. Right now that place was little more than a plane patch of grass where many ships could land and take off. There wasn't any way of defending that part nor building anything in there, it had been at least half a day of travel from the last tree that you had spotted and the only mountains where hundreds of kilometers away.

In front of your team there was an extension of grassy fields and occasional hills but nothing else. It extended for kilometers until it reached the horizon and seemed to be endless. Unless your team managed to find a covered way to sleep they would have to pass the night uncovered and that would carry dozens of risks, not only because of the Kroot, there were many other dangers and hazzards out there like insects, parasites or even the suddenly changing weather and the effects it could carry on the different immunological systems of both your teammates and yourself.
>>
>>40218039

As the night fell you and your team weren't lucky enough to find a cover to pass the night, but yes an abandoned and rusty Chimera tank that had seemed to have fallen decades ago and left to decay. It looked like in the past that particular spot had become the epicenter of a fierce battle, where both Kroot and Humans died in droves, their bodies ended decomposing and feeding the soil with rich nutrients. Surrounding the tank and feeding from the carcasses a great field of flowers formed, it was a pretty yet grimm place.

We decided to pass the night in there, both as a way to respect the fallen guardsmen and to see if you could repair the vehicle.

The next morning we ate our last rations, we would have to hunt from now on. The medicae was able to pretty much patch the three wounded and return them to battle to some degree. Things looked hard but weren't desperate...yet.

>Check the equipment of everybody.
>Search for food and water sources.

You start by asking everybody to remove their armors and leave their weapons inside the Chimeras for posterior study. The female Nala gets all excited and quickly starts removing her armor and making strange kiss and slurping like noises, maybe to get your attention. You only get a quick glance of her sweaty and chubby yet muscular body before having to look away in utter disgust and asking her and the rest of the Ogryns to stay as they were and keep their armors on. The Ogrette seems to be clearly disappointed and pouting loudly yells that she would to the backside of a close hill to make "WOMUN STUFF"...You were unsure if she meant urination or masturbation, thinking about it made you shudder, that was the first time you wanted to keep ignorant about something and not pursue with your Quest for Knowledge in that matter.

Everybody excluding the Inquisitress started laughing and guffawing at you. You felt completely enraged, so mad that even your brain started to get hot and hurt. All those people had to follow your orders as you were the direct link to Karelia but at the same time they were sort of independent, both the crewmen and the mercenaries weren't contracted by you, but by the Inquisitress after all.
>>
>>40218476

There was nothing that you could do but check their equipment. It was on a pretty good shape but still could have been better taken care off. Trying to distract yourself from the bullying that formed around you focused completely on your work. After two hours of work all their armors had been calibrated and repaired to full working condition. You were even able to repair the Chimera to some degree, it seemed like it would only last for a few miles until its deposits emptied but still it was a great asset. With the three Chimeras your team could travel completely inside the vehicles instead of walking and thus cover a way greater distance.

At the same time as you were looking at the ancient and rust covered vehicle the rest of the team started searching for food and water, today was our last day after all. We were blessed and ended finding a boon of small palm like trees that had fruits that after an analysis with your Biologis dendrite proved to be completely edible and safe for human consumption, those plants could even have been introduced by the own Imperials after all.

With the three vehicles full of food and ready to drive you and your team headed and entered into the main continent. In the distance there was a great forest, that forest could be a hiding place from the Kroot of The Mantle, there was also the option of crossing the pebble filled coast but the irregular terrain might slow your team, there was also the option of trying to find another route or going back.

>Go across the coast.

The vehicles soon descend into a pebble filled beach with a cold and calm looking adjacent sea. The massive gas giant of Cuatt Anterius reflects on the water giving it a wide spectrum of colors and strange forms to its surface.

As beauty as it was you or your team couldn't afford distracting with such petty gifts of nature as any second of unawareness could prove fatal. On the distance you managed to see some packs of wild dogs running and creating a trail of dust as they crossed the horizon, oddly those canine like creatures somewhat resembled the Krootoid species.

It was all calm, way too calm. Just as you relaxed your few remaining muscles for a second the ground started to tremble. A couple of meters in front of you a chasm started to form in the rocky ground and from it a tall, hunched and muscular Kroot appeared, its digits seemed to have evolved to be as thick as a human wrists and were ended in long and powerful plane claws, its beak was short and wide, hanging from it there was a long and really wet tongue that almost reached the ground.
>>
>>40219045

You took a while but at the end were able to recognize it. It was a Kroot from the Rockborn tribe. They lived and spent most of their lives underground in solitude and peace, away from the clashes of the tribes from the surface. It looked as if it was the most unintelligent Kroot specimen that you had found yet. Maybe this tribe decided to feed on Ogryns and thus developed muscles mass at the cost of wits.

“NOT SHOOT, ROCKBORNE NECHALLAI NOT WANT TO FIGHT HUMANS, HUMANS START HUNT, ROCKBORNS DISLIKE HUNTS, ROCKBORNS LIKE COIN, IF YOU GIVE COIN ROCKBORNS FIGHT FOR HUMANS IN HUNT, IF YOU DON’T GIVE COIN ROCKBORNS GO AWAY.”

Yes, they were mercenaries, able to be bought and paid by anybody on the planet, even humans it seemed.
“AHEAD GREAT TRIBES OF MANTLE, SWEEPING CLAWS AND UNBOUND. YOU VERY VERY DANGER!”

You knew that xenos were liars and your past experiences with the eldar Elyadien proved that. Still maybe it said the truth, lying was a hard concept for the short minded. Even if you paid him you still didn’t knew why it would ask for “Coin”. It’s not like those tribes have nothing but a rudimentary economic system at most. Coins would be mostly useless for them. Maybe for its simple mind the term coin simply meant payment?

>Ask what he wants for payment. Even if it is immoral you could use the xenos to kill each other and create mayhem.

"What would...a filthy xenos like you want from us?" You asked.

To my surprise some people looked at me strange for not shooting the creature without hesitation but after a couple raised their weapons Karelia halted them. She somehow gave you permission to talk to the creature.

The Rockborn Kroot Nechallai smelled its armpits after you called him filthy, it seems that besides stupid those creatures were also pretty literal. His answer confirmed your suspicion, it didn't wanted money but food, more concretely Ogryn meat.

None of the four abhumans flinched at this, maybe because they didn't catch what the equally stupid alien meant.

"STRONG SPIRIT WARRIORS STRONG FLESH, IF WE STRONG WE CAN DIGG AND LIVE AWAY BAD MANTLE AND OTHERS."

Not going to lie, getting red of those mentally retarded warriors wasn't much of a big price for you but they had been useful so far. It was still one of the best ways you could find of getting rid of Nala that didn't implied direct assassination from your part.

Exchanging four abhuman Ogryns that could use human weapons for an indeterminate number of Xenos. It didn't seemed like a bad deal really, the most restraining restriction was the fact that it was heresy...yet still with the Inquisitress approval that could be easily solved.

"How many of your warriors will you give us for our four Ogryns?" Asked Karelia.

"WE GOTTA GET SHAPER TO KNOW. WAIT WAIT FOR US"

He descended and shortly after returned with another member of its tribe. This one had a similar hide cover on his face.

"SHAPER CAN SNIFF IF THEY ARE GOOD OR NOT"

That's what the other two shapers had done before, they smelled the sweat or other fluids and somehow detected which of us had good DNA. Apparently in yesterday's encounter each tribe got interested in someone in particular as they ended heading into the different tanks to sniff closer

The Rockborne Shaper got closer to the four Ogryns and started smelling them. He seemed to be happy with the first three, including Nala but when he reached the completely hooded and covered Ogryn it rejected it quite violently. That pretty much confirmed my suspects of it being a mutant Ogryn.

"So, how much for the three Ogryns?"

"FIVE ROCKBORNE FOR EACH, FIVE AND NO MORE" Answered the shaper stoically.

Karelia ended approaching you and questioning your opinion.

"I cannot completely read them." She said. "The mix of their stupidity and their alien psyche acts like some kind of barrier, I just get vague shapes, colors and oddly smells from their minds. What do you think we should do?"

>Accept the deal and get finally rid of Nala, you will still have an Ogryn that will be able to fight for you.

This raises the question... If the kroot are willing to deal could there not be some enterprising members of the imperium who decide that breeding kroot for loyalty and strength is a good idea?

Might be worth discussing with Karelia in private at some point.

>Ask the Shaper why it rejected the last Ogryn.

"Why have you rejected it?"

You spoke slow and loud, trying to make it easy to digest and process for their primitive and undeveloped grey matter.

"UH?" Was the only answer you got.

"Why...have you-" You pointed at the shaper. "-...rejected it." You ended while angrily pointing at the hooded Ogryn.

"HE SMELLS STRONG BUT NOT LIKE OGRYN, SMELLS DIFFERENT, WEIRD MEAT, STRONG BUT WEIRD MEAT. VERY STRONG WARRIOR SPIRIT, STRONGEST ONE HERE BUT NOT LIKE OGRYN"

Somewhat confused about what he meant you just kind of ignored and ended declining the offer.

"You and your tribe better be away from our path, you dislike hunts and we are the hunters. If we meet again we will shoot and chop every one of your kindred."

The Rockborn members seemed to need some seconds to understand it all and then without a word returned to their hole.

>Use the grenades and other explosives of the mercenaries to create an artificial channel that connects the sea with the tunnel they have appeared from, let the sea drown them all.

"Wait." You ordered as the rest of the team started marching.

Using your lenses and your mind you started to calculate the density of the shore and the distance it was from the tunnel that the rockborn had created.

"What, are you going to chat with more Kroot or is that you want some private time with Nala?" Said a mercenary.

"SHUT UP YOU STOOPID!!" Yelled the female Ogryn in a lame attempt of comeback.

"I have a plan." You added. "Maybe if we use some grenades of the mercenaries we could create an array of explosions that could create a channel of some sort and communicate the sea with the opening the had created, if we are lucky they will be all flooded and drowned."
>>
>>40220894

There was a great silence but then one of the mercs ended trusting you and threw her grenades with the pin still on at your direction. The rest as if they were part of a hive mind ended shrugging and giving you their explosives. A few minutes later they were all connected by a simple yet trusty copper wire that was at the same time connected to your electoos. You only had to mentally order it and the sacred spark would travel across the wire and ignite the grenades at the same time.

As the team moved away with the Chimeras you activated them and let the wall of fire burn on their backs. As they turned around the managed to see the sea moving back and breaking into a huge wave that ended engulfing the newly created aqueduct only to fall into the subterranean lair of the Rockborne.

Apparently under those coves there were magma rivers and lakes connected to geysers. Soon the ground trembled and cracks formed releasing the steam and also the echoed scream of all the peaceful Kroot that lived down there.

The trapped Kroot suddenly found themselves surrounded by steam that ripped the flesh out of their skins, water that immediately drown them or lava that would burn them to ash. They were born on the rock and on the rock would they die.

Knowing that all those vile creatures were dying by the dozens cheered up the team and raised their morale, they were even grateful that the Ogryns didn't ended eaten. They were ugly, stupid and sweaty but they were Imperials after all.
>>
>>40220921

>You might be closer to other teams now that you are in the mainland, see if you can contact them.
With the rest of the team listening to the orchestra of dying echoes and the show of steam geysers suddenly bursting you started to contact with the other teams that could be listening at the vox channels.

There was static but you ended catching a couple of teams, one was the first Imperial regiment and the second one was the first Skitarii team. Both pretty much explained that were heading north to avoid the same area you were at and to get closer to the rendezvous points. The Imperials and the Skitarii were separated by the great canyons on the north and thus communication and contact among them was near impossible.

By the time you reach the canyon your team might have to choose between heading east or west. Both seemed equally dangerous...

After the scream and steam show was done it was late night. We all decided to pass the night and continue tomorrow.

>Check the recovered Chimera and see if you can repair it further.

While the rest of the team searched for more edible fruits meanwhile you started to check the systems of the damaged Chimera. You could exchange use parts of the other two Chimeras into this one to further improve it while slightly restraining the other two. This while possible was kind of amoral because it would mean to knowingly damage two sacred machines.

Honestly the biggest issue wasn't the mechanical problems, it was the fuel. Your team was only issued for enough fuel for two vehicles, right now you could equally distribute the fuel among the three tanks but if you did that then none of the three vehicles wouldn't be able to reach any of the two closest rendezvous points and be stranded on the planet forever. It seemed that saving the three would be impossible unless you were lucky and found a team that could lend you their spare promethium or you came across another abandoned graveyard that had the necessary fuel. Abandoning this vehicle again would feel totally heartbreaking for you.

Kind of sorrowful you just continued repairing the transport as best as you could. The steering wheel was kind of bent and slightly drifted towards the left and one of the exhausts was broken, making part of the smoke enter inside. Still it was way better than walking.
>>
>>40221971

Being transported had made the team felt more rested and cheerful, looking how much time they saved and how far they were able to go was really morale increasing.

After a couple of hours the rest of the team returned with some fruits and a rodent-like kind of creature with two tails and extremely long legs fitted ended in tiny paws. You used your Biologis dendrite and after checking that with the exception of a reddish peach like fruit the rest were perfectly safe for consumption. You were surprised by how good that xenos rat tasted while roasted and accompanied by fruit and a water flask.

All that food wasn't as efficient as your usual protein shakes, nutritive bars and vitamin pills but still the fact of eating all that food in community and looking at the night sky was way more pleasant that hurriedly stuff yourself with them on solitude while reading some document. Nala ended leaving the small circle where the Ogryns ate separated from the rest and seated on your side, her stench and bad manners were pretty disgusting but still she didn't had done anything truthfully wrong with her. You felt pretty conflicted about her, she was becoming an annoying issue but at the same time she was still a loyal member of your team and a great warrior.

The jokes and lewd insinuations didn't took long until they appeared. As always Karelia didn't took part of them and just continued eating in silence. Maybe she kind of appreciated you as her adept but still felt some kind of hatred because of your weird...thing, you tried to be positive and theorize that another possibility could be that she was mentally scanning the surrounding areas trying to find Kroot on the prowl.
>>
>>40221988

You were tired, tired of being insulted. You were strange yes but they were strange to your eyes too. Those lowly and ignorant persons would be long dead if it weren't for their weapon and armor, weapon and armor that your priesthood had designed, built and maintained. They should be grateful!

"Stop." You left your steamy xeno-rat plate and stood up, then extended your twelve dendrites to look way bigger and revealed your hidden flamer and powersword. "I am a member of the Adeptus Mechanicus. I know secrets of the universe that your simple mind couldn't even comprehend. Your lives depend on us on a daily basis, you as warriors might be the Hammer of the Emperor but we are the crafters, and without the smith that made the hammer you would be NOTHING."

Slowly you grabbed your flamerchainsword and with the other three flamers at your disposal softly pressed the trigger to create four small orange torches around you that gave you an even more fiery appearance.

"I am part of your life more than you would believe, all of you are nothing but puppets...we are not the puppeteer but the ropes that control. You should FEAR US."
>>
>>40222009
With this said you covered the eyes of Nala and then activated your warpsteel mask. For and instant you let the firecamp reflect on it, flashing everybody for a second and burning the image of their own putrid souls on their minds. It was more of a subliminal effect, they could see normally when they opened their eyes but every time they closed them their true self returned. To further increase the nightmare you used your vox-datacommand and with an inaudible by human ears whisper ended turning on the engines of the three Chimeras and honking their horns on their backs by surprise.

"And If any of you still believe that its' brave enough to laugh at me then it is free to duel me whenever it desires. Don't worry, I will not go for killing blows. Maiming is a way better option, that way the rests can be reused to create servitors..."

None of them bothered you anymore and surely that night all of them would have nightmares.

Karelia didn't seemed to have been affected by it at all. Being such a fearmonger what you did might have just something average for her. Still you managed to see how she respectfully nodded in your direction as you sat again and ended your meal.

For the rest of the day the team marched in silence, just as you liked it. Just as the sun was setting your team reached the Canyon. Your team would have to choose between going to the left and possibly meet the Imperial Team or going to the right and maybe encountering the Skitarii team.

What will you suggest to the Inquissitress?
