Despite your dislike of the concept, they are still their own people to you, which seems to make an important difference. Unfortunately, the situation came with a frightening caveat – if a Chinese demon defects, the ruler of the Chinese Hells is honor bound to destroy them if he notices or meets up with them. Meaning while you can accept their surrender, you can never promise to protect them from their king, because it's impossible for you to do so. At least, not without causing an actual spiritual war between the Chinese and Shinto spirit worlds that spans two continents and would be a direct violation of the Chinese Celestial Balance.

That aside, Akari-niji-chan is following the strange demon-girl to wherever she is taking the letter, and hopefully she will return with some usable intel. Chisato was unable to get much out of her two renegades, despite removing their little fingers aside from the fact that it was probably the European military people interfering again. Er Yin-sensei still has the dart they were going to try and poison Kiki-hime with, and she'll let you know what it contains soon enough.

Which leaves you regrouping with the rest of your family at the umbrella, and consulting Yui-niji-chan about her medical skills.

“What a human finger? Sure, I can do that. It won't heal fast, but it's easy to do.” Yui considers, and nods. “I can do it, aniki.”

Kiki-hime looks at you worriedly, less because you're threatening to torture Yakuza thugs than because she's seen you suffer two lapses into memories of hell in the past ten minutes. She isn't aware of what happened in the landlady's office, and you would rather keep it to yourself a little longer, but that may not be possible for too much longer if you keep slipping up. “Do you have to deal with it now, Ryu-chan? They're not going anywhere, and Chisato-san was probably very thorough, especially with Peta-chan to help her.”

Peta-chan, the leader of her community of nogitsune-born spirit children, has entered a sort of pact with you and your Yakuza friends, facilitated by Er Yin's magic. Certain nogitsune-born had made connections with certain Yakuza, probably those with strong E.S.P. To begin with. Their bond allows the spirit-child to assist the Yakuza in dealing with the spirit world, while the Yakuza assists the nogitsune-born by protecting them from human-world threats such as exorcists, sorcerers, and the like. You plan on using their assistance to help Rie's cat-youkai and all of Japan survive your coming of age.

“That's true, but there are questions I can ask that she won't know to ask. Also, we have those three soldiers to talk to.” Kiki's eyes widen. “I keep track of these things, Kiki-hime.” you sigh in relief as you see your sister and Shoko-san talking with Er Yin-sensei; Kiku-chan is once more sleeping peacefully, her head in her master's lap; you must have tired her out more than you though.

Yui-niji-chan considers. “Are Jinyuu-sensei and Kiki-hime going to be safe with just Er Yin-san, Shoko-san, and Inau-san here aniki?” Kiki-hime looks at your subordinate. “Well, Kiku-san looks really tired.”

“The princess isn't entirely helpless either, Yui-niji-chan. Besides, Kiku-chan has been trained like Akari-niji-chan and I. Even asleep she's probably as dangerous as Yuuhi-chan. I note you forgot to mention her, though.” Yuuhi-chan glances at you curiously.

“I thought she would be coming with us, because of the soldiers, aniki.” It's an interesting thought, but rather unnecessary, given that they're human. Even the most well trained human is just human. Sure, you can't use your own magic on them, but you don't need that when you possess some of the most effective passive powers among spirit-children.

“If we can't handle five humans between us Yui-niji-chan, I'll hang up my sword and become a nun.” Yuuhi-chan giggles and Yui-niji-chan looks at you dubiously. “Yes, a NUN, because I'm a GIRL, Yui-niji-chan.” She looks even more dubious, if that's possible, while Kiki-hime giggles behind her hand, and takes your arm in hers. “Fine, fine! Anyways, you're forgetting that our friends here have proven they're trustworthy, and my sister isn't entirely helpless herself, especially near the ocean. I doubt anyone else is going to try anything until later tonight in any case. So Kiku-chan can have her nap, since old ladies like her need them.” That prompts giggles from both Yuuhi-chan and Yui-niji-chan.

Kiki-hime wraps takes your arm in both of hers, and leans into you. “Well, as long as you come back soon,” she murmurs softly. “I want you to take me swimming, like you said you would.” It doesn't take much brain wracking to figure out when that was; it was when you showed her how Water dragonettes shower. “But I think it's nearly lunch time now.”

Turning your attention on Yui-niji-chan, she considers, and shakes her head. Too long and she won't be able to sew on those fingers. Even magic can only help so much, outside of the legendary abilities of the kappa or the kirin. “It won't take us long. There isn't too much they can tell us, to be honest. We'll get more out of the soldiers, really. But I have to talk to Er Yin-sensei at least.”

As you rejoin your family, the relief on your sister's face is both gratifying and a little embarrassing, mostly because she seems relieved that your wife is safe and well. That relief, that ~acceptance~ of your choice in making Kiki-hime yours mollifies your irritation at her unfortunate choice to get the King of Hell involved in your affairs. Er Yin-sensei may have told her, or may not have, but you don't see any reason to bring up her mistake in front of everyone.

Shoko's mistake, on the other hand, does require some discussion, but you can do that in relative privacy. Yui-niji-chan has probably been present for such situations before, and you really don't plan on dressing Shoko-san down too much. Finding out where she's been is kind of important; you guess it was basically looking in on her master's property. She IS the keeper of the household after all, so that only makes sense.

You might just drag Peta-chan and Chi-chan along as well. Chi-chan didn't investigate the soldiers, after all, and she'll probably want to know why they were there as well. It might earn you more favors on her part. And at this point, you could really stand to have a few more people owe you instead of the other way around. The landlord owes you a LOT as far as your concerned, but outside of that, Chi-chan is it.

Yuuhi-chan immediately runs up to Shoko-san and starts regaling her with the spectacle and tale of your outstanding diplomatic skills and the amazingly strong demon-girl, while Shoko indulgently listens to her breathless exclamations. Kiki-hime slips away from you to take Jinyuu-onee-sama's hand and smiles, while Jinyuu-onee-sama settles on a towel and allows the princess to tell her and Er Yin-sensei the revelations you and she discovered about her I Ching reading. Kiku-chan doesn't stir, her tail flopping once or twice as she sleeps with her head cradled upon Er Yin's legs. Yui-niji-chan stays close to you as you study your family, and you realize that Inau-san is hanging back a little as well, allowing your family members to speak freely among themselves.

Leaning close, you whisper into Yui's ear that you need a moment, your lips lightly caressing the sensitive edge of her pointed ear. Her blood pressure shoots up dramatically and she nods quickly, your fingers lingering along her tail as she darts over to where Kiki-hime is sitting and literally knee-slides into place next to her, producing a surprised squeak from your wife and smiles from Er Yin-sensei and Jinyuu-onee-sama.

You start to walk over to Inau-san, who is standing next to the cooler, her weapons stowed into ~Nowhere~ and a strange smile on her soft lips. You sneak a couple of bottles of Ramune from the ice-chest and casually pop the caps down, releasing the marbles into the glass. Offering one to Inau-san as you settle next to her, you watch your family mingling, happy and safe again, for the moment. Only Akari's absence mars the otherwise picturesque scene.

“They are all very beautiful, Ryukusa-san,” Inau-san says softly to you as she inclines her head in thanks for the drink. You make a noise of agreement, though to be honest they're all quite different from one another and in most cases a person would be quite put off by two or more of them at any given instance. Tall and powerful Shoko, the voluptuous Kiki, the delicate and youthful Kiku, soft and spacey Yui, hyperactive and slender Yuuhi, the stoic and svelte Akari, your elegant sister, shining dragon Er Yin....it would take a special sort of person to admire them all equally. “I think you are very lucky.”

You smile faintly. “It wasn't truly luck, to be honest. But I have to thank you, Inau-san – no, let me finish please.” Her protest would be entirely earnest, you're certain. “Everyone here except my older sister has been tested in battle with our enemies. You too, even though you're not a warrior. You followed my enemies and lead me to them, but you didn't have to stay with Yui-niji-chan and Akari-niji-chan. You could have continued following the others; you didn't know they would be caught.” She remains silent and you look up at her, setting the bottle down before you.

“And you would have been in the right to do so, as that is what I asked of you. But you stayed with my kohai instead, even though they're both warriors and you are not.” She looks slightly abashed. “And that, more than anything else, is what makes me say this.” You stand up, leaving the bottle in place, as you turn to the startled Inau-san. “Thank you for protecting my family, Inau-san. Please consider yourself to be part of my household as well.” The you bow to her.

The young demigod looks thoroughly embarrassed, and most of your family, despite noticing what is going on, kindly do not turn their collective attention on her. Inau-san stuttered for a fe seconds, before attempting to excuse herself, to claim that it was nothing. You interrupt her again, rising and placing a gentle finger upon her lips. “Inau-san....you put yourself at risk for my family of your own choice, when you did not have to. You have proven to me that you are my friend, and a valuable person to my family. You have helped me when I needed you to, without anything more than a glance to see what I needed. Don't think I haven't noticed you running interference for me on occasion.”

“I'm sorry, Ryukusa-san, I didn't think you would notice or mind....”

You tilt your head, studying the beautiful-handsome demigoddess with amusement. “I'm a Water dragonette, Inau-san. I noticed everything, and remember most of it as well. Whenever I needed help, you were there helping as best you could.” You glance over your shoulder. “You took to them readily, and with an open mind and heart. You didn't judge any of them, or me, or if you did, you never let it show.”

Her embarrassment includes a little bit of guilt, but you don't concern yourself with it. Being thrust into a situation as unusual as your family would have made anyone question things. “Even now, you look at my family and can honestly say they are all beautiful. It wasn't flattery that made you say it, you were being honest.” Her cheeks darken further, and she's nearing the point where she'd going to pop another blood vessel. “I notice you aren't trying to deny it any longer either,” you chide gently.

She shakes her head, and you follow it with a simple question. Not truly an interrogative one; your question is meant to make her admit what she hasn't said aloud but honestly believes. “Why did you do those things, Inau-chan? Be honest with me.”

Her hesitation is understandable; you've very clearly demonstrated you don't tolerate intruders or outsiders involving themselves in your family to their detriment. “At first, I believed I was doing only what my aunt required of me. I meant only to assist you in the ways you needed and asked of me.” You nod reassuringly, accepting her at her word and not condemning her attitude. She takes heart from your understanding attitude and speaks more frankly. “Then I started seeing how your family was being treated. Not just by you, but by those who sought to harm you. I saw that your family trusts in you, with more than their lives. They're happy, and strong, even in the dire situation they live in.”

Lifting both hands Inau-san indicates the beach. “Even after someone sought to harm your family, you are here, unafraid and calm, and none of them are concerned by the fact that soldiers came to harm them, or that Kiki-sama was fired upon” She looks at your family, at Yui being hugged by your wife, at Kiku, sleeping in her injured lover's lap. “They trust you so deeply, love you so deeply that it is inconceivable that you would let anything harm them, even though others would have fled.”

Studying Inau-san's agitation, you reach out and gently rest your hand on her shoulder, and she calms down a little. “When Yui-san and Akari-san were attacked, I thought about chasing the humans....but I saw that they were immediately having trouble. The thought of either one being hurt while I remained safe....it was not acceptable, Ryukusa-san. If I could help protect them, then I would be doing your family the honor they deserve.” The demigod looks into your eyes, her pale eyes urging you to understand what she is saying, hoping that she is making sense. “They are your warriors, and they are needed as much as you are.”

You don't let her see your feelings on the matter – your perspective may have changed a little over the past couple of hundred years but you're still nobody's fool – but you ask her the one question that you've never actually asked your family. They have all asked for you to help their loved ones, or to protect them from their enemies, but Tokei Isusangi isn't like any of them. She is a power in her own right, someone who can change destinies and fight fate on its own terms. Inau-san is a demigoddess, born, trained, and beloved of the kamuy.

She isn't a victim of anything other than an unusual school, which you can't really judge anyone ~else~ for given your own schooling. There is no one hunting her, no threat to her future, no enemy of her own that she brings against you. She was obeying her aunts request, and yet placed herself in the path of a demon who fought Akari-niji-chan and Yui-niji-chan to a standstill despite the fact it would have been acceptable to continue with her work. And perhaps that is what really makes the difference: she sees Yui and Akari, who are clearly and pointedly your subordinates and whom others might consider expendable tool to protect your family, as important to your family as you yourself are.

“Tokei-sama....will you trust me with your life?” You speak the words softly, your sapphire dragon eyes gazing into her pale eyes.

Your question seems to take her by surprise. “Everything you have done is to protect the lives of everyone around you, Ryukusa-san. I cannot imagine you doing anything less for me, even though I am a stranger to you.” You continue to stare at her and she nods, bowing her head after. “Yes, Ryukusa-san, of course I would trust you with my life.”

You step forward and lean down, pressing your lips to her forehead as you take Inau-san's hand in yours. She stiffens, startled by the unexpected caress, but she relaxes almost immediately. You trace the kanji for 'family' upon her back, but not the third person term for it – you write the inclusive term for it, making her a part of your family instead of someone outside of it. Your other arm slides around her, and she shivers, her blood racing hot as you embrace her, accept her. “Then you must consider yourself part of our family as well, Inau-san. You have protected the ones I love with your life, how can I not give you the same in return?”

Her hand tightens in yours, and she looks up at you, her eyes shining, and a smile upon her bright rid face. You gently wipe away the trickle of blood from her nose, and prevent any further bleeding., mostly because it's your fault for putting her face in your bosom – she's pretty short. You take her over to Kiki and Yui, as well as Jinyuu and Er yin-sensei. “Jinyuu-onee-sama, this is your new imouto. Please treat her well.”

Er Yin-sensei turns to Inau-san and inclines her head. “Please take care of us, obasan,” she asks, using the short 'A' sound to denote her as an aunt, rather than a grandmother. Kiki-hime glances at you curiously, and you smile mouthing the word 'later' to her.

“I hope you're nicer than my other aunts, Inau-sama,” comments Yui-niji-san mildly.

“Of course she is, she's Ryu-chan's sister,” Kiki-hime immediately claims, and that alone seems to reassure your oni-chick very well.

Yuuhi bounds over and lands on her knees in the sand. “Oh, hey, you're Ryukusa-sama's sister? I didn't know that! You don't look anything at all like her, but neither does her big sister, so I guess that's okay! I'm Yuuhi, her bodyguard, please don't make me kill you, that would be very bad.”

Shoko looks like she's about to have kittens.

“I promise to help take care of Ryukusa-sama's family, so you do not need to worry about killing me, Yuuhi-san.” To her great credit, Inau-san takes Yuuhi's claim at face value, and with a straight face reassures the hyperactive nogitsune-born.

“Come on, Yui-niji-san, Shoko-san, we have other work to do.” You had planned on fetching Peta and Chisato first, but you're running short on time. Mostly because you want to be back for lunch. You kiss Kiki-hime softly, and she kisses back gently, her nail tracing 'I love you' across your thigh. With a delightful shudder you rise and wrap your tail around Yui-chan's neck and start dragging her off as Shoko-san joins you.

The beach is still fairly lively, even, or perhaps especially after the incident with your kohai and the maybe-demon-girl. It doesn't take much effort to figure out where Peta-chan and Chi-chan are, since they mentioned fireworks; the only safe place to set them up would be near the shops and supply stores at the edge of the inlet along one side of the trees. For the most people people leave you alone, as you set Yui-niji-chan on her feet and brush her off after having dragged her away, which seems to have tickled her pink.

Literally, she's glowing that weird brickish pink color and giggling.

“Really, Yui-chan, maybe I'll put you on a leash and drag you around for a while.” She giggles again and shakes sand out of her hair.

Shoko-san is subdued, and it doesn't take Water Eyes to see that she knows she's in trouble. Still, you take Yui's hand in yours and walk with Shoko towards the beach-house area, giving her the time she needs to settle herself or work herself up. To be honest you're not really worried she'll make excuses or lies; she just doesn't seem like the type, even for an oni-child.

When you've reached a more sparsely populated area of the beach, she takes a deep breath, and starts with the obvious. Which is really something to give her credit for. “I'm fucking sorry I took off without warning you, Ryukusa-sama; I didn't realize I'd fucking put anyone in any kamidamned danger by taking a trip to shitty Ryutaku-ji....I only intended to be gone a few hours and I am truly fucking sorry that I failed you....”

Walking as you are, you've made it impossible for her to abase herself before you, which was somewhat intentional. That gives you time to consider her reasoning and purpose before you forgive her. She IS the castellan of the home of Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado, making her responsible for the grounds, the defense, and the remaining servants there. Her father is also there, putting some filial duty into the mixture also. “It is a problem, Shoko-san, because if I'm to be your master the way you want me to be, I have to be able to rely on you. It shouldn't have been too difficult to make at least others aware they needed to inform me you would be back quickly.”

She doesn't try and lay the blame on them, which is another surprise for an oni-child. “I know, Ryukusa-sama, and that blame is squarely upon my idiot fucking head.” The whole little girl voice coming from a seven foot tall oni-child is really weird still, especially when she swears. You kind of wonder what humans see when they look at her. “Please forgive me, it won't happen again, I fucking promise on my heart and on my horns, Ryukusa-sama!”

That's a pretty hefty oath to make, you know, as Yui-niji-chan swore to serve you on it and she hasn't failed you yet. Still, it's a mess that shouldn't have happened, even if you were unconscious; someone needed to tell you, and making sure they did that was really her responsibility, though there is some blame on their part. But you chastised them only a little as well.

Ugh, you hate being the disciplinarian type! Well, outside of bedrooms. And excepting Kiku-chan. You consider carefully as you walk along, not truly intending to let her stew in your silence, but this isn't some minor infraction either. You glance up at Shoko-san. “You know, I don't think I have a collar big enough, but maybe I should leash you instead of Yui-niji-chan.” Shoko-san turns a really dark green color, nearly black as she blushes. “I mean, I suppose I could punish you, but you know, I've forgiven people who were less honest and less earnest about their mistakes than you were Shoko-san. It would be stupid of me to be less forgiving to my warriors than my enemies. I'm not a very good daimyo.”

In the past samurai under a daimyo would be held to a far higher standard than the enemy would, because they were supposed to be perfect. Eh, fuck that – no one is perfect, least of all you. And she took responsibility, which is something you've rarely seen any oni-child do of their own volition.

“Besides, the real reason I was upset is because of Yuuhi-chan.” Yui-niji-chan glances up at you and smiles faintly. She knows all about this issue. Shoko-san looks confused though, unsurprisingly. “Can you imagine what it would be like to have to tell you that I failed to protect Yuuhi-chan properly while you were away? I don't think either of us would want to live through that.”

You spot Peta-chan looking up at the sky as Chi-chan smacks someone in the head with a rolled up newspaper a short distance away. “All right, I understand. Thank you, Shoko-san.” She seems mollified, and you can feel the fierce determination radiating from her. Yui-niji-chan squeezes your hand, reassuring you, and you smile down at her. “Come on, we have some stupid people to scare the piss out of.” With that, you wave to Peta-chan and your sukeban, and take a deep breath.

Sometimes, things turn out okay despite your presence.

So, Ryukusa now has a new sister, right? Is there a formal ceremony for this in Shinto or Koshinto? Also, will it affect Inau or us in any ways, beside the obvious?

Not really, it's an informal sort of thing she's done.

She is officially Ryukusa's warrior, though she makes an excellent diplomat as well apparently. And no, she's a top. Leashes aren't her thing.

I'm seriously considering tomorrow, but definitely Friday.
