Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

You’ve been able to do weird things all your life, but only in the past year have you started to understand why. Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are a hellborn – part mortal, part demon. Ever since you ran into a family of demon hunters, a lot of weird (but cool) stuff has gone down. You’ve battled rogue generals, joined the a baron’s conclave of demonic advisors, and dueled landmasters. You maybe even met a real live dragon – though you’re not a hundred percent on that one. But perhaps most surprisingly, you successfully graduated high school.

Before you can pile in a car and ride into the sunset on your pan-America roadtrip, though, you’ve got a couple loose ends to tie up. Ushologuissa, a Stygian countess (and Grand Wyrmwrither), has nabbed a foreign hell VIP dude from your fief, with the aid of Hassatur the fish king. Or something like that, anyway.

The guy you’re trying to rescue is actually in the room with you, guarded by some weirdo demon dude who was expecting some trouble from a Verwelken shadow demon. You just shot him up good, killing him. Now all you need to do is get the VIP out of here before your demon hunter help catches up and murders everybody, possibly including you.

--

You glance in the corner where the emissary is stuffed into a cage. Getting in here and kicking over the guard wasn’t hard at all. You remember another time where things seemed easy, and coincidentally, that time was also when you were fighting Stygians.

Armor plated demons don’t go down from one burst of regular gunfire. The corpse in front of you is fake. That means the Verwelken-fearing demon is somewhere else, invisible.
>>
>>40216143

You dodge backward, and feel the movement of air of something whooshing just before your face, blurring your vision before passing.

Yep. He’s still here, swinging his hammer around. And you can’t see anything. You need darkness to even the playing field. “Break the lights!” you shout to your summoned hellhounds, who are still stunned from their tousle with the demon. The creatures cough and whine, speeding off to tackle down floodlights and bite through the cabling.

You leap again to the side, hoping to get some distance on the demon striking out at you, and ready up your fire whip. (-2 PP: 10) You might not be able to tell where he is, but fire doesn’t lie. You swing the flaming line around in a wide arc, pelting the walls and space before you with searing flames.

Flames roil through the illusory body on the floor like a mirage, and another gout of heat collides with and wavers from a patch of empty air. The emptiness surges toward you. You weave aside, shoving aside the charge with your shadow-self, your tendrils wrapping about something solid and deflecting it as you move out of the way, draining away some of his power as you go. (+4 PP: 14; Roly: 15 PP)

This guy’s fast. But you are not without tricks. You feel the hostile presence coming around for another attack, and at the same time you whip out Zelathis and whip out at where you think he’ll be.

You guess right, and your rapier strikes chitin. Thunder rocks the room, and the armored demon flickers out of thin air, blasted out of his illusion and smashed back into the near wall. (Zelathis: 6/10 charges) The wall buckles underneath the impact, leaving a crater when the demon steps out, totally uninjured. (Roly: 37 HP)

“Sattler would be surprised to know who she’s working with,” says the demon, snapping up his sawed off to blow your head off.

You thrust out a hand, wrapping your shadow around his gun hand. “Sakheritahn,” you hiss, taking a huge step forward to give you reach.
>>
>>40216152

Power flares down your shoulder, burns through your shoulder, and enters the flesh of your adversary. (-1 PP: 13)

The demon’s arm flexes involuntarily at your touch, the blood inside his veins acting against him. The move takes him by surprise, giving you free reign to have him point his own gun against his opposite shoulder, and pull the trigger.

There’s a loud bang, and the demon jerks backward, blood and chitin exploding out from his shoulder. (Roly: 32 HP) He jerks backward out from your grasp, and falls to the ground, spluttering in shock. Your instinct is to rush in and rip open his throat with your claws, but the force with how he broke your grip wasn’t a move of desperation. There was too much purpose.

You bring up a hand and shadow, directing yourself around an invisible blow from the demon’s sledgehammer. The spluttering thing on the floor shimmers away, leaving you grappling with the real demon head on.

You’re pretty good yourself, but this guy has a lot of weight on you, and his superior height gives him leverage. He leans in, pressing his advantage. “A Verwelken pyromage – seems like an oxymoron to me,” the demon tells you.

You might not be able to overpower him, but that’s not really the point of you grappling with him in the first place. You grin evilly and let the soul-sucking void within you latch onto the aura of his power and devour it. (+7 PP: 20; Roly: 5 PP) Power fills you, eager to be unleashed.

“I’ve never fought anyone like you before,” the demon says, his armored, vaguely insectoid face shifting into a thoughtful expression. “So many surprises.” He strikes low, attempting to wind you. But you make use of his shift in balance to break free of his hold and get some distance between the two of you.

You glance backward, finding the room significantly darker. Your hellhounds and gnawing on the last couple floodlights already.

“That’s smart,” he comments, hurling his sledgehammer at your head.
>>
>>40216163

You dip under the twirling hammer, which buries itself in the wall behind you, but when you come back up, the demon has a Desert Eagle in hand, just a little faster than you’d expect.

You take evasive action, rolling out of the way, though when you come up, he’s still got the weapon trained on you. You summon shadows to protect you, hoping they’ll slow the round down somewhat. (-4 PP: 16)

Except when he pulls the trigger, he distorts wildly, like you’re looking at him through a convex mirror. His weapon flashes, and a hole explodes out of the ceiling. He tries to aim again at you, adjusting for the distortion, but every time he fires, the space flexes unpredictably. Shots blow up a flood light, shatter a window, and splinter a beam from the lattice work of the wall behind you.

And then a giant crab thing tackles the demon, crashing him sideways into the money table, sending stacks of cash flying everywhere. The two demons struggle for the gun, flashes of color and sound, and impossible contorting moves striking left and right from the two. Where the hell did Ulam come from?

Wolfgang steps out of nowhere at your side, staff ready before him, power radiating from him like an engine. (Wolfgang: 25/33 PP) “I like your moves,” he says, a smirk on his face. But the tension with which he holds himself shows he’s anything but relaxed - he's alert, ready to throw magic and whatever gets in his way.

He's way hot right now. Like. Really a lot.

> I’m not paying you to look good, get Luce out of here.
>Took you long enough.

I don't think we should intercept sattler, but we should make it look like we busted down the barricade before we move on, not sure she's going to buy "Bullshit Landmaster Translocation" as an excuse as how we got into the room otherwise.
>>
>>40216201

I wouldn't really count bullet deflection as ultraviolence.

PP efficient projectile damage negation is mad sexy, though.
>>
>>40216457
That and Daniel Radcliffe are the two things that get her wet.
>>
>>40216201
So, I'm pretty much the only person picking up that Roly is both intrigued and impressed by us?

> A Verwelken pyromage – seems like an oxymoron to me

> “I’ve never fought anyone like you before,” the demon says, his armored, vaguely insectoid face shifting into a thoughtful expression. “So many surprises.”

I mean, just saying, we killed our first boss because he was mad with grief after our Mom died and wanted to preserve her legacy. We ARE the Imperiate's daughter. Nobody knows.

This dude is powerful, and smart.

Ranthix was once our worst enemy, and most dangerous foe.

Just, you know, tossing those things out there. It would probably be BEYOND stupid to try and turn this guy while Sattler is there.

But part of me still wants to try. If only for how much it will piss off Waldric.

and you know, get a high level dude on our side.
>>
>>40216482
>Daniel Radcliffe
I thought she didn't like manlets
>>
>>40216523
Dude looks less short on the screen.
>>
>>40216523
She grew up on Harry Potter, so she can't really be blamed for crushing on him.
>>
>>40216486
It would be cool, but if I remember correctly Ulam already went to these guys to try and negotiate Lucy's return, and they refused, which seems to indicate they're pretty adamantly affiliated with the Stygian Countess person given how much of a big guy Ulam is
>>
I must now take my leave to go do battle against the dreaded Lawn. Wish me luck.

Lawngod give me strength.
>>
>>40216551
Shit's hilarious. Half the dudes I knew who looked even vaguely like Harry Potter growing up had mad game because so many girls loved the movies.

The other half were social retards and yet they still had chicks crushing on them even if they didn't recognize it or if they did know they still didn't know what to do.

Not even kidding. Shaggy brown hair + glasses + kinda skinny = OMG HARRY POTTER SO HOT. One dude had a face that actually looked pretty close on top of the hair/glasses/skinny. Lucky douche.
tfw blond hair no glasses so I couldn't take advantage of Harry Potter mania
>>
>>40216580
True, true. But that seems to be based on her power.

Ach, well, t'heel wi't.

Let's fuck him up for now and if he says anything interesting while begging for his life we can come back to it. Unless Sattler gets here.

For now, let's focus on the mission and get Wolfy/Lucy out of here.

Turning Roly would be a bonus, but we have priorities.
>>
>>40216610
Shut up pussy. I got off a 12 hour night shift 2 hours ago. I have another 12 hour shift tonight.

Lawngod, why do you do this to me?
>>
>>40216621
I'm sorry, but fuck that. He's not worth it. The danger he represents through his continued existence is too high.
>>
>>40216486
Maybe worth a shot, but it'd be mad risky.
>>

>>
>>40216613

Yeah, everyone knows the girls who're into Malfoy is a lot freakier in bed.
Should've capitalized on it while it lasted, anon.
>>
>>40216486
Seems more like the same general surprise that Iptaph expressed. Roly's just more confident in his ability to win, backed up by him attacking us instead of running away.
>>
>>40216676
To be fair, Sierra is a pretty much inheard of mixture of bloodlines.
Most demons who know their shit would be somewhat fascinated by her.

>>
>>40216741
We ran through multiple walls and ceilings to get here after we sent Satt running in the opposite direction on a wild goose chase.

That said, she's totally going to bust in right now. We don't even know where the door is since we cornerstepped into the room and Wolf/Ulam teleported.

You like Wolfgang’s moves too, but now’s not the time to start thinking about how his mouth would taste if you just started macking out right now. “I’m not paying you to look good, get Luce out of here!” you say, waving toward the corner.

“I wasn’t aware you were paying me at all,” Wolfgang says, heading off toward the cage. You’re fairly certain that he’ll have some way to get him out in short order.

Now about the demon Ulam’s wrestling, you can’t really leave that to chance. If he blabs to Sattler, you’ll be in trouble. You speed over, sword drawn. You’re not sure how fast you can kill him, but maybe if you mess him up enough, he won’t be able to speak.

Ulam’s got his arms wrapped around Roly’s throat, strangling him as the latter repeatedly elbows backward into the cleric’s carapace, and strikes backward to punch him in the face.

Ulam says something in a hissing, lilting tongue that you don’t quite understand – Stygish, you guess. In response, Roly growls something back, and punches the cleric backward in the nose. Or at least the space where a nose would reasonably be on a mortal.

The demon ceases his struggles when he sees you barreling toward him, and Ulam redoubles his grip, finally managing to get him under control.
>>
>>40216876

True, I dont think she would find gore exciting sexually. If that were true we would know by now. I would think power would be more her thing.

Roly holds up his oddly shaped hands in a gesture of surrender. “I won’t reveal you to the ironhand if you release me,” he says. “The Taintless One forgives all with time.”

“Spurious doctrine, but given circumstances, Axos,” says Ulam, glancing up at you, “the transgression against your brood mother is relegated. The question is not of law, but of sincerity. You have refused the rightful requests of the Baron twice already.”

“The fool asks thrice, but an unsettled heart may turn again,” says Roly – or, that is, Axos. He faces you without emotion. “Spare me.”

“Careful,” warns Ulam, tightening his hold.

>Axos is responsible for a whole lot of people dying, including all the demons I cut through to get here. He’s not walking away.

against

>>40216953
>What do you want to do with him, Ulam? You're the expert on life and death.
>>
>>40217125
It also doesn't mean we pick the worst possible choice. This dude has dangerous information. He knows we're the Verwelken, he knows that Wolfgang associates with demons, and based on how he just stopped struggling when Ulam whispered to him, I think he just learned who our mom is.

This building is not a good place. It has an angel running around in it with a massive murderboner and if this guy didn't just have a 100% change of heart, we're about to be in for a majorly bad time. We'll be forced to kill Sattler lest she call in dozens of other demon hunters. And they won't only come for us - the Hallows are going to be in for a bad time when it gets out that they're blood traitors.
>>
>>40217140
> Yes, the Demonbane will save me!

Somehow, no, I don't think that's his plan since in that case our VERY FIRST priority would be to kill him before he can say anything.
>>
>>40217173
If, if if if if if.

But we ARE demons, this guy isn't the worst possible choice yet, and we don't know if there are magics, oaths, or magical oaths that he could take to bind his loyalty.

Let's at least ASK the only guy who knows about this shit, namely Ulam.

Once again, it worked out pretty goddamn well with Ranthix, and Isaac even.
>>
>>40217174
I dont think anon means its to save him, I'm guessing more along the lines of "I die you die"
>>
>>40217199

There may be anon, the issue a few of us are debating is that the longer we take the more likely we are to be exposed to sattler.
>>
>>40217201
That's terrible plan when there's the possibility we could also both get out alive.

I mean, so far the bad guys have been well fleshed out with their own interests along with a healthy desire to survive. I don't think Languid started suddenly writing Saturday morning cartoon villains.
>>
>>40217159
In that case, count >>40217001 as:
>Axos is responsible for a whole lot of people dying, including all the demons I cut through to get here. He’s not walking away.
>>
>>40217214
See >>40216770

We should have some time at least, Sattler isn't exactly "Stealthy Hunter" either.

It's not like we have to have a big debate, just ask lam what he thinks and if there is any way to bind him to his word. Then he either swears to serve us and not betray our secrets, or he dies right away.

Two questions and an answer.
>>
>>40217226

>>40217174 this guys part

>>40217239

>>40217252
More like he'd try to escape in the ensuing chaos of sattler's mere presence.

Part of you remembers Ranthix, and how helpful he’s been. What if Axos turns out the same way? But Axos is Ushologuissa’s son, so you can’t really think of a good way to compete with that. Fortunately, you don’t have to think of everything. You have friends.

“What should we do with him?” you ask Ulam, frowning. “I mean. We can’t risk him walking if he’s talking crap.”

“A life for a risk,” Ulam says.

You hear an explosion from somewhere nearby. Sattler’s going to be busting in here soon.

Ulam’s expression becomes grave. “If he swears on his name,” he says. “If he swears he will never seek the injury of this fief again, and that he will keep our secrets, he may go. But this is a dangerous thing.”

“I will remember my debts, shadow walker,” says Roly, looking you in the eye.

Ah, I thought he meant something like "I can get away in the confusion of the Demonbane finding out your secret!"
>>
>>40217199
Yeah, no. Ranthix and Isaac weren't anything like this situation.

Letting Ranthix live only risked him coming back later after regenning. He wasn't begging for his life, either. He was asking us to kill him.

Isaac talked to us in a jail where we didn't exactly have a chance of running or killing him and by the time we did it was clear that he wasn't going to be doing something.

Axos is begging for his life. He is going to die if we want him dead. Telling Sattler about us is a damn good way to get rid of us, whether he does it later out of spite or in the next few minutes in an attempt to spark a shitstorm to hide his escape. He is far more dangerous to let live.

Also you need to read the quest, m8. Oaths on one's demonic name are binding. If you break them, your own power turns against you.

Oaths are not foolproof. He'll still be very capable of attacking us in roundabout ways. The oath isn't fatal unless the demon is already injured and quite powerful.

The only thing it would stop him from doing is direct confrontation. He could have a lackey send the note to Satt saying that we're a verwelken and just deal with the debuff while he hides in a hole.

Ya'know what was the only other time that "power turning against yourself" was described? When Hellborn hybrids' nature caused them to explode. It's not just a debuff. Pretty sure the flipping expert on Halth wouldn't even consider this if it could backlash or if promises were that easy to break.

You're right. He was some mercenary, not the son of our main enemy.

The oath enforcement is bullshit. It doesn't stop him from acting and the penalties aren't fatal.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not.

This guy has dangerous information. We have no way to prevent him from disseminating it other than by killing him. The entire reason we were trying to kill him was so that he could never talk.

Him saying "ok done now" should not mean we spare him. It's beyond dumb.

Killing people who are non-threats is monstrous, and Sierra hasn't done that. This situation is not one of those times.

You just need to be done with this, now. “Fine,” you say. “Swear what he tells you to and get the hell out of here.”

Axos begins muttering in Sygish, Ulam’uberatu telling him the words to say. You recognize ‘Axos’, and a coule of other words that Heltic has in common, and you feel a clear ringing of power in the air as he finishes.

At the same time, you see Wolfgang helping the beaten up looking Lucifer out of his cage. “We’re taking you home,” he says. The Mardusian emissary is thin, almost skeletal beneath his tattered suit. You don’t get a good look at him before Wolfgang throws his arm over his shoulder.

Their corner of the room twists strangely, and when it snaps back, they’re gone.

Ulam releases Axos. “Come with me,” he says, clamoring toward the window. Without complaint, the second Stygian follows.

“Watch out. Sattler has somebody watching the back,” you warn.

“Concern yourself with she that watches the front,” Ulam replies, holding up by the window.

“Yes, shadow walker. Concern yourself,” says Axos, smashing out the glass of the window and climbing through. He vanishes midair. Ulam goes through the same disappearing act.

Suddenly, the wall next to you explodes, though it’s difficult to see anything with the heavy smoke and dim lighting in the room. Sattler’s making an entrance.

You realize you should probably not be in here. You feel your hellhounds looking to you for direction.

You sever the line between you and them – you won’t be able to resummon them without putting power into it, but screw that. You don’t want Sattler asking questions. The hellhounds fade out of the picture, and you throw yourself toward on the ground, cornering through between the floor and the wall. (-2 PP: 18)

You fall out of the ceiling and crash to the floor, winding yourself. You’re on the floor below, rubble and bodies strewn everywhere. Man. Sattler makes quick work.

This guy;s probably gonna go back to halth with his tail tucked between his legs and stay there.

Hopefully he takes over for his momma sometime down the line and remembers the favor he owes us when our armies march to reclaim our seat as Imperiate.
>>
>>40218261
The choice was either kill him or fuck ourselves over. Just because people don't like one of the options doesn't make it an ambiguous choice.
>>

>I'm just waiting for the next time we meet the guy so we can kill him like we should have.

He's Ushologuissa's son, that's a political prisoner if I've ever heard of one. Probably worth handing over to Waldo, although what's the bet that his mom actually hates him or he has 100 brothers or something.
>>
>>40218261
I voted to kill him because he was threatening to tell Sattler during our fight and have obviously set up this scenario to expose us to her.

Seriously, fuck that guy.

Also Stygians have bigass litters instead of one kid at a time.

Anon, It was not to "fuck ourselves over" there were potential benefits, it just had associated risk.
Risk Vs reward wasnt actually too bad, especially with Ulam to watch him.
>>
>>40218386
Seconding "Where the fuck was this said", but also -

That just means we have shit to offer him, like getting to be his own person in the US of A and breaking down traditional gender roles.

>>
>>40218404
I think it was in one of the FAQ threads where Languid posted an info piece of each demon type. Females were hugebiglarge and (maybe) devoured sometimes their partners. Like a mantis.
>>
>>40218406
Risk: That we have to fight Satt and dozens of demon hunters to the death and potentially more of Axos' friends on top of it
Potential Reward: A stygian/infernus ally who is weaker than us.

I don't think it's worth it. If we were really desperate to get empire building, we could do better than a sketchy mid-tier goon.

For the cannibalism, it was said in either the last thread or the one before it when talking to Ulam. It was also touched on during the FAQ threads and during random Q&A shit.

That's so unbelievably retarded holy shit.

He doesn't want that. At all. It's a biological imperative for them to suicide by fucking and on top of that is piled thousands of years of cultural pressure. Ulam got out of it by being a priest dude and he sounded sad that he couldn't get his head gnawed off.
>>
>>40218473
> Implying that it wouldn't have also been a risk to fight him with Sattler so close to us, and possibly leave marks,

I guess I still remember that first Stygian we killed, resulting in us freaking out and going on a murder spree. That was a fun action to fight about too.

> Implying it isn't over and done, and you're just salty as fuck.

>>40218473
Well Ulam has him in custody, I voted to kill the fucker and I think we'll be fine.
At the very least Waldric can mind rape some info out of him before we shoot him in the head or something.
>>
>>40218535
Dude has boss illusion skills, and more importantly a good information network and can use tactics.

Not everything is about power, anon, sometimes it's about making a room full of lights.

Sadly, we also have tactics and a teleporter. Also rather unfair levels of snowflake powers.
>>
>>40218577
It would have been no risk to behead him right now with SoS Zelathis. Or jam the blade into his head and detonate it.

His surrender did not remove him as a threat. If anything, he is far more dangerous now than he was during the fight. Also Ulam straight up said that sparing him was risky. He's a priest, but he did not come here to preach peace.

It wouldn't affect shit in future negotiations because Sattler would be blamed. And even if it did come out that we killed him, that is a point of favor to us. You know how our mom got to the top? She killed everyone who fucked with her.

And you're right. I am salty as fuck because this was retarded. You're wrong about it being over, though, because this will bite us in the ass hard.
>>
>>40218673

I thought thats I was saying, things other than physical power.I probably should have been more specific. I was referring to the one I was responding to saying the only reward was someone weaker than us.

Since you’re out of the way of things, you decide to stay that way. Since Sattler took off, you reasonably could have not had any idea where she went, and got separated. You think of what she’d want you to do, given your current hypothetical situation. While Sattler is deadly, she is also kind of sloppy, and might have missed a demon here or there. You decide to run clean up duty, seeing if you can ferret out anything that’s slipped out from under her nose.

You proceed through the building, noting the carnage Sattler left behind, but mostly checking to see if any of the nightmarish corpses have any sweet loot on them. You get drenched by all the fire sprinklers going off, but you can deal with it. It’s pretty hot today.

You find a lot of stuff, some of it useful, like hundreds of dollars worth of cash money, and some of it not so useful, like weird little baubles and trinkets some of the demons have on them. You skip the mortal plane souvenirs and knick knacks some have on them, but a few have some hellish keepsakes that you keep for your sake.

The most notable things you find are a way cool dagger, with a wavy blade and handle all carved from the same piece of bone, inscribed with faces wrenching with pain, a jewel-encrusted egg about the size of a golf ball, and a heavy gold coin two inches in diameter, traced with lead etching in the form of some kind of demonic glyph.

There’s some magic going on with all of the things, so that’s probably the reason you took them and not others. Also gold.

While going back to the stairs, you get an all-clear text from Wolf. Looks like everybody’s just peachy.

And then you find a survivor. The overweight demon sits by a section of collapsed wall, water pooling under his legs from the flooding sprinklers above. His skin is stretched tight over his bones, as if he wasn’t given enough to start with, and his skin has a kind of scaly sheen, like that of a rattlesnake.

He must weigh something like four hundred pounds. He has a row of short, spikey horns prodding out in a ridge leading from above his eyes, up over his head, and further.

A shard of metal sticks out of his chest – it looks like part of an exploded fire extinguisher. You don’t see any other bits lying around, but you know from experience that when things blow up, it’s hard to find all the pieces. Blood gurgles steadily from the wound and his mouth. The smell of it fills the air, thick and pungent.

The demon’s eyes, tiny and recessed in his skull, gleam out at you from under his sweaty brow. They have an odd, glass-like quality, as if they’re part of a wax figure.

“M... mercy,” the demon says, a deep, gurgling come from within his throat. Sounds like blood in the lungs. He can’t have long.

Sattler appears at the end of the hall, nicked and singed in places, but otherwise still looking Terminator ready. She comes over but stops suddenly, seeing the mortally wounded demon at your side. “How much blood does this guy have in him?” she asks, laughing incredulously. She aims at the thing’s skull and pulls the trigger, but it clicks empty.

“Uh. Hey, Sattler,” you say, feeling uneasy.

“Please...” the demon breathes.

Sattler snorts. “You see any signs of that Verwelken?” she asks, ruffling through her backpack for another magazine. She concludes her search with amazement. “Well how about that. No bullets. Mind getting this one?” She jerks her head toward the dying Stygian at your side.

While you kind of like it when things fear you, you kind of get weird vibes about the fear coming from the Stygian when you compare it to Sattler’s complete lack of any feeling whatsoever. (+3 Stress: 59)

Sattler senses your hesitation, smiles coldly, and says, "Don't tell me you're out too."

The demon breathes heavily, struggling with it.

You definitely want to kill him. It’s an urge you feel inside yourself, that makes you want to destroy stuff. It’s the same kind of feeling you get when you kick over somebody’s sandcastle or whatever. And he’s in pain and stuff, so it’s probably for the best. You don’t think there’s any way he’d get out of this with Sattler here, even if he did have a shot at living.

You feel nervous. “No, I’m not out,” you say. You could cut off his head or something, but it seems kind of not right. Like, maybe if you fought him or whatever, it’d be different? But he’s not fighting anybody anymore. You guess it’s just kind of weird because you’ve never just up and killed people before who didn’t do anything to you, or weren’t in your way, or weren’t actually doing stuff around you, specifically.

You find yourself bringing around your SMG. You can’t hesitate to figure this out, not in front of Sattler. You pull the trigger, shooting the demon a couple of times in the chest, the sound of the shots muffled by your silencer.

He sags over and goes still.

You stare. (-1 Sanity: 98/100)

Sattler suddenly claps you on the shoulder and steers you toward the staircase. “Not bad,” she says, gesturing to the destruction around you. “Definitely sloppy, but you made it where it counts.”

You do not like Sattler’s hand on you, and slip out from under it. (+3 Stress: 62) “Yeah,” you say.

“We should do something like this again sometime,” she says, flashing back into her human form and stuffing her gun in the bag. “Kind of nice having a sidekick when you’re out killing these fucking things.”

For some reason, you find Sattler’s presence very uncomfortable. (+2 Stress: 64)

Maybe it’s something to do with how Sattler doesn’t seem phased by anything that just happened. It’s like she just came back from a good run or vacuumed the house or something. There’s something about her that’s different, and not a good different.

“It’s kind of not my kind of action,” you say. “You’re like, the Terminator, you know. Like. Insane whirlwind of destruction. I’m just... magical and whatnot. I don’t think I was meant for kicking down doors and having everybody shooting at me.”

“Don’t lie. I saw you enjoying yourself,” says Sattler.

“Yeah, I guess. But not all of it. Just...” it was kind of brutal.

Sattler shrugs as you walk. “You figure out how not to be afraid after a while,” she says. “Stuff like this is where you come alive. You just got to tap into your real power. You’ll have enough of it to scorch the fucking sun someday, I can feel it on you.”

You don’t know if you want Sattler’s vote of confidence now that you have it. (+2 Stress: 66) “I’m... I gotta run,” you say. “Movies and crap. And a shower.”

“And gunshot wounds?” she says.

“Wait. Are you going to tell Isaac about the whole blood thing?”

She laughs. “You thought I was serious? I was just fucking with you. Get your punk ass out of here.”
>>
>>40220096

“Then... I’ll see you, I guess,” you say, heading off once you reach the door. Sattler throws your long-sleeved shirt after you, and you yank it on, hopefully covering up most of the problem areas.

You sneak into a nearby store to wash up a little, and head home.

--

About an hour later, you’re clean and back in street clothes, but you still feel off, somehow. You spend maybe too long brushing your hair, frustrated with how much it tangles up and whatever. You throw the brush onto the counter and head out.

You could bust Rowan out of here and go over to Vikramas with all those maps, and start plotting out your incredible journey, but now’s not the right time. You’re starting to have second thoughts about Axos – it’s dangerous having him around. You need to touch base with Waldric before you can start thinking about skipping town for who knows how long. Ushologuissa’s son knows stuff he shouldn’t know, and that means you have to be careful.

You decide on a compromise.

You pop into Rowan’s room, finding her on her bed, laptoping it up. She looks up at you. “What’s up?” she asks.

“Meet me at Vikrama’s later,” you say. “It’s happening tonight.”

“The happening is happening?”

“The pre-happening is happening,” you reply.

“Oh. The pre-happening,” says Rowan, nodding vigorously. “How about at eight? We can stay up all night if we have to, and we’ll eat as many oreoes as we need.”

“We will have to,” you say, firmly.

Rowan smiles. “I’ll head over as soon as I finish up here,” she says, tapping her computer.

“Boring,” you say, smiling, but feeling a little tired at the same time.

“Is everything all right?” asks Rowan, hearing something in your voice.

You don’t really feel like going into this right now.

>Nope, not really.
>Just be there at eight.
>Stop being so perceptive.
>It’s better.
>I hate Sattler.
>I’m fine.
>Other (?)

Dude, it'll be fine. The dudes probably back in halth by now.

More importantly we need to bring up the fact that he knew we were coming. This was supposed to be a stealth mission and the guy was prepared for us.

I'm pretty sure that he was baiting us out, not that there was a leak or anything like that. There were already rumors that Waldric had a Verwelken backing him up, and with the kidnapping he provided the type of mission you'd send a Verwelken on if you have one.

This. We let an enemy with knowledge that could sink our little family walk.
>>
>>40220890
Yeah, so the countess gets to know a bit about us. But she also knows that her operation here has been destroyed completely, and satt is in the area. So she won't be coming back to haunt us, at least for a long time. No real immediate danger. And no way satt finds out from that.

He doesn't know our identity. Just that we work for wally. And now we're dipping out for a month or two so info on us isn't gonna be available. Then we'll come back with a huge power spike from dem landwells.
>>
>>40221055
He knows that we also worked alongside Sattler and that she doesn't know we're a demon.

He doesn't need our name, that info alone is enough.
>>
>>40220998
I was talking about killing the dude who begged for mercy.
That shit was low, even for Sierra's standards
>>
>>40221142
Had to. Besides the guy was probably a fucking terrible person anyway.
>>
“Stop being so perceptive,” you say, scowling. “Just... Sattler’s a bitch. I don’t want to talk about it right now.”

Rowan turns off the music. “I want to talk about it,” she says, her expression serious.

“You just... you focus on your college thing,” you say. “I don’t want to do the whole thing right now with all the stuff.” You turn and leave without giving her a chance to get on your case. (+2 Stress: 47)

You fly down the stairs, and check to see if Isaac’s home. You don’t want to get into things with Rowan, but you can talk to Isaac and be all businessy and professional about it, and he gets that.

You find Isaac in the study, doing some stuff to his freaking huge crossbow. He’s got it unstrung, and has a couple silvery scrolls out. The letters seem to shine off the page, and he reads along in a low tone, melodious syllables shaking the air with tangible power. His crossbow seems to glow from within, not exactly lighting up with actual light, but more of just standing out more from everything else than it should.

He holds up a finger while he finishes reading a passage, then scrolls the scroll shut. “No broken bones?” he asks.

“I got shot, but I’m better now,” you say.

Isaac opens his mouth to say something, but decides against it. He shakes his head. “Nobody saw you?”
>>
>>40221188

“That’s kind of the thing,” you say. “Sattler was there.”

Isaac’s expression turns serious. “That’s convenient timing,” he says. “Do they still have the emissary?”

“No, I kind of used her whole ‘purge everything’ plan to save him while she wasn’t looking,” you say. “Your fish king could probably think he just escaped in the chaos. I mean. Sattler’s got a lot of that going on for her. She made me clear the place out with her.”

“Does she suspect anything?” he asks, very carefully.

>We’re on pretty good terms. Or at least she thinks we’re on good terms. Wants me to be her sidekick.
>Whether or not she does, she’s insane. You have to get her out of town.

We'll probably have to kill or make peace with her eventually. We're not gonna be able to hide our immense demonic power if we keep advancing like we are.

Especially if the long term plan really is to become Imperiate.

Not any time soon though.

So can we all agree that it was probably angels who killed Momma?

I think we can't tell Sattler until we can pin her in a fight without getting #rekt.

If Sattler finds out Sierra's a demon, I think it'll go more or less like this.
