Demon Princess Kouhai Edition

Your name is Kazuya Narukami, and you are the best friend of a standard harem MC. A month ago, your party of thirteen defeated the Dark Lord Azazel and restored peace to the world.
Your ordinary lives have resumed, so your objective is now twofold. That is, resolving your bro's harem and supporting him to the very end!

Last time we…
>Walked to school in the rain on Monday.
>Dreamed about the past on Tuesday.
>Ate lunch in the cafeteria with friends on Wednesday.
>Consulted with Laura about Syoko’s potential issues on Thursday.
>Discovered the hateful letters in Syoko’s shoe locker on Friday.

[4:15 pm, Feb 28, 2016]

Beneath the cloudy afternoon skies, you walk forward with Syoko in tow. Traffic lights flash from green to red, signalling yet another rush of cars along the jammed city streets. Bicycles rush past the two of you, rubber pedals squealing and shrieking like pigs to the slaughter. Remnants of snacks are thrown into garbage cans, adding more to the pile. Grateful students laugh their way back to their homes, celebrating the end of another week of school.

You ignore it all. Today, your perception of the world has been shot numb. You barely register waiting for the little man to turn green at an intersection. A half-kitsune woman, dressed in shocking neon pink and yellow, offers you a pamphlet for a newly opened gym in the city center. She is brushed past, not given even a single glance. You might as well be walking at the bottom of the sea.

Gray Soul has bolted upright, having sensed the churning emotions inside of you like butter swirling around in a blender. It’s straining against its steel chains, yowling loud with its fangs bared. The last time you felt like this was December the first, when your bro’s parents had been executed in front of the entire party. Furious doesn’t even begin to describe it.

“It’s okay, Syoko. You’re gonna be okay…”

Your friend, a girl kind and caring even towards the enemy of her own species, is still crying her heart out. Her tearful voice is all you can focus on. It doesn’t matter that you’ve left behind your school belongings in your locker. It doesn't matter that people are staring. You want to comfort her; remind her that her heritage doesn’t matter and there will always be a place for her in this world by her nakama’s side.

You know this is neither the time nor the place to discuss such matters. So you hasten your pace.

Ten minutes of marching later, you arrive at Tatsuya’s home. With one arm still draped across Syoko’s shoulders, you march up to the front door and ring the doorbell. Its shrill chime assaults your eardrums and you wait.

“Coming!” It’s Ayase. You hear her dainty footsteps pound across the wooden floorboards behind the door, ringing louder and louder as she nears your position. The lock quickly slides open, metal scratching against metal.

“Oh hello, Kazuya. And you too Syoko!” She begins, all smiles at first. A mobile phone, the latest model from Orange, is clasped in her right hand. “Did you guys come over…to…”

The realization hits her like a ton of lead blocks falling from the sky. You watch grimly as Ayase sees the salty streaks tearing down her friend’s face, her bloodshot eyes and sniffling nose. Her expression instantly melts into one of utmost concern. She turns to you.

“Why is Syoko crying, Kazuya?” Ayase demands, “What happened to her?”

“…”

Black shades meet violet eyes.

…what should you say to her? What can you say to her? That for the past week, bullies have been leaving hateful and vile notes inside Syoko’s shoe locker, telling her existence is nothing but a sin and she could commit suicide on the spot. That all of this abuse has been occurring for more than a week, and practically nobody noticed?

How on earth do you summarize the situation in a single sentence? How do you convey the rage inside of you, towards those who harmed your precious friend and yourself?

“It’s a long story, Ayase. We need to explain it to everybody.” Is what you eventually end up saying, voice dead and flat, “Can we come in?”

“Of course, of course! Quick Syoko-chan, let me get something to wipe your face with…”

The notion of hesitating doesn’t even cross Ayase’s mind. She swings the door open and ushers the two of you inside. Still sniffling, Syoko exchanges her trainers for a pair of cotton slippers and enters the house. You do the same.

“You look exhausted, Syoko-chan.” Ayase speaks, giving Syoko some tissues, “Um, is there anything I can get you?”

“W-water would be nice. I’m t-thirsty…”

“Got it. Follow me.”

You see Ayase grab Syoko by the hand and lead her over to the kitchen. The fridge is opened, and a half-filled jug is brought out. At the same time, more footsteps approach you from your living room.

Your best friend and leader, Tatsuya Aragaki, has arrived. He takes one look at your story face, and understands.

“Kazuya.” Tatsuya says, his voice cold. “Start from the beginning. Tell me what happened.”

No, we need to begin a life-long endeavor to mend the wounds caused by the war with the demons. On the human side AND the demon side. Once that's done, then we can start ANOTHER life-long endeavor to end the hatred between the two species.
Or we go all Tales of Symphonia on this bitch and combine the human and demon worlds, and then cross our fingers and hope that it doesn't just make the war start up again.

In your palm is a letter. It is the one you read back at the locker room, filthy hate and ominous enmity dripping from it like blood running from a freshly opened wounds. Throughout the entire way back, you had clenched it in your hand, gripping it so tight that the paper threatened to tear and burst. You unfold the letter, smooth out the crinkles and show it towards your best friend.

It is enough. He reads it, eyes moving left and right as he sees the horrible, horrible words directed towards Syoko. His eyes widen.

“I see. So that’s what going on, huh?” Tatsuya voice is calm. It is tranquil, serene and he looks ready to start immolating someone with the fires of the almighty dragon goddess. A tiny flame lights on his index finger and he dangles the letter above it. The paper is reduced to ashes in less than a second. A small light of satisfaction in the middle of a gloomy rainstorm. “How many more?”

“Lots.” You growl. “We left them back at school.”

“Do you have any idea who did this?”

You lower your gaze. “I wish I did.”

Tatsuya crosses his arms. “And how long has Syoko been hiding this from us?”

“She said a week and a bit.”

“That long? So much A-1 Academy being a bully-free zone...” Tatsuya says, frowning. He sighs. “We need to let everyone know about this, and fast. The girls, most of all. Let’s call them.”

“…I understand.”

You take out your cell phone, still feeling hollow inside. Who will you start with first?

>Call Hatoko. Her kindness will help Syoko the most.
>Call Laura. She helped you get to the bottom of things.
>Call Sachiko. She will be especially livid, so better to let her know right away.

You dial Sachiko’s number and wait for her to pick up. The thing about your charismatic, corrupted-light manipulating friend was that she wasn’t a true fallen angel. The blood of those who fell from god for wanting to interact with humans came from her mother, but the blood of her human father also flowed through her veins. She was walking the fine line between regular human and metahuman. Add to that a rich, secluded upbringing, and you were left with a girl who felt she never truly belonged to the world as a child. Perhaps that’s why she been one of the first to accept Syoko into the party, along with you, Tatsuya and Hatoko. She felt like she could understand Syoko’s pain.

If there was one person who would be just as infuriated as you about this whole debacle, it would be Sachiko.

“Good afternoon, Kazuya.” Her chipper voice sounds through the phone speakers. “What’s up?”

“Bad news, Sachiko.” You reply. “It’s…look, I need to you to listen carefully.”

“You sound particularly serious. Is something wrong?”

Where to start?

“Syoko.” You growl. “She was bullied.”

“…excuse me?” You hear the shock inside of her. “What did you just say?”

“Some bastards put hateful letters inside her shoe box. Syoko’s been reading them for a week by herself, and she didn’t tell us. None of us noticed either. She’s crying right now.”

“…”
>>
Sachiko doesn’t say anything for a while. When she does reply, her tone is hollow and cold. Just like bro’s.

“Who are they? Who are the insolent fools who dared to harm my precious friend?”

“We don’t know.” You reply, wearily. “Bro and I are at his house. We’re calling the girls to get to the bottom of this.”

“I’m coming right now. Whoever these arrogant, ridiculous children are, they shall not get away with this.”

You hang up. You turn your head, and see your best friend finishing up his own conversation.

“I’ve messaged Hatoko and the others.” Tatsuya says, not smiling an inch. “They’ll be arriving soon.”

“That’s good.”

Your bro walks up to you, and looks you dead in the eye. “I need to know something first. Kazuya, tell me. What are you feeling right now?”

You reach deep inside of your heart, and answer.

“Like shit, bro. I failed to notice Syoko when she was at her lowest. I’m angry with myself too, for being such an oblivious fuck all this time!”

“…anything else?” Tatsuya continues.

“I think I want to find the shitheads who sent those letters, and slowly and painfully beat them to death with a sledgehammer.” You enunciate the words slowly, one by one. Your bloodlust is evident in every single one of them. “At the very least, introduce them to Gray Soul’s heavy form.”

Tatsuya puts a hand on your shoulder. “You know we can’t do that, Kazuya. I’m pretty pissed off too, but violence isn’t the solution here. It’ll just make the situation worse.”

“Yeah.” You lament. “I know.”

You head over to the living room and sit down on one of the couches. Ayase is sitting next to Syoko, gently holding her hand and listening to the tearful words her friend is whispering. Syoko’s eyes are still blood crimson, her hair is a bigger mess than it usually is and her body is shaking. But at least she is crying less, only a few teardrops falling down from her eyes.

The girls arrive within a minute. Hatoko rides the flow of the wind and touches down from the sky. Kurumi appears directly inside the house, climbing out of a pool of shadow. Sachiko hitches a ride with Laura, the former clinging to the latter’s aerial mech suit. In any other situation, the girls would be trading enough verbal barbs and thorns to make the world’s largest rose garden seethe with jealousy. Today though, their lips are silent, like the stone statues of the Medusa.

They pack into living room. Sachiko immediately rushes over to Syoko’s side and hugs her. Ayase switches places and goes to sit next her cousin.

The meeting begins.

“These are the letters.” Laura intones in a rough, hard voice, taking out her school bag and dumping the contents onto the solitary table in the centre of the room. Sheets of white and ink fall into a heap, some fluttering to the carpeted floor. “I counted. There are over fifty of them here.”

Your friends only need to take a look before reeling back in sheer disgust and horror.

“This is terrible…” Hatoko cries. “I..I…don’t understand. Syoko is such a sweet girl. She's one of us, so why would anyone do this?”

“People fear what they don’t understand, Hatoko-chan.” Kurumi replies glumly. “We thought everything would be clear once we defeated Azazel, but…”

“Apparently not.” Laura snarls, clenching her fist. “Did these men and women not understand how crucial Syoko was in the final confrontation? Without her remedies and cures, thousands of lives would’ve been lost.”

“Whoever sent these letters, they’re awful!” Ayase growls. “I’ve assassinated my fair share of rotten people, and I’m not exactly the shining model of humanity myself. But this just takes the cake!”

“There’s a more pressing issues here.” The leader’s voice brings the hubbub to a close. “Syoko. Why didn’t you ask us for help? We were these the entire time, yet you hid your suffering from us. Why?”

“Please tell us, Syoko.” Sachiko grips her friend’s hands tightly. She is concerned, so fearful for her friend’s well-being. “You have to.”

“I…” Syoko hiccups and gulps. “I didn’t want to be a burden on everybody. I-I wanted to take care of things myself…”

>“Why would you think that? Don’t you remember what we told you?”

Once, Syoko had been a particularly persistent enemy. As a demon princess of the Underworld, one amongst many in Azazel’s twisted family, she had opposed humanity by default. She and her siblings had attacked the party several times, each one resulting in a loss. It was always you that fought her. Your heavy endurance and resistance against magic had made a perfect matchup for her dementation and berserker nature. Nothing personal, of course. Back then, Syoko Hoshi had been just another tenacious demon opponent to get rid of. You had given the battles your all, delving deep into Gray Soul’s madness and charging forward.

It was only until the third encounter that her family suddenly abandoned Syoko and left her at the mercy of the party. There had been twelve members at the time, Tatsuya at the start and Courier Six at the end. Gray Souls’ heavy form had slammed her to the ground, smashing her into a miniature crater. The party had gathered around her broken and defeated form, weapons out. You recall Syoko spitting up blood and trying to stand up, ultimately failing in the end. Everything had been suddenly yanked out from under her feet; who could blame her for giving into despair?

Your bro and your leader had walked forward. Syoko had closed her eyes and prepared for the end. Yet, instead of slaying her, Tatsuya had simply held out a hand and accepted her.

“You’re one of us now, Syoko. Never forget that, and don’t let everyone else tell you otherwise.”

You remember it vividly, Tatsuya’s friendly words echoing like voices drifting through a mountain range. They are as clear as day.

So why is Syoko reacting like this?

You take off your shades, and place them in your pocket. “Is that all? Don’t you remember what we told you?”

Syoko looks down. “I…I know…”

“You’re not a burden, Syoko. You’re far from it. No matter what happens, we’ll always be there for you.”

“Relying on others and asking for help is not a sign of weakness.” Laura chimes in. “I understand how hard it can be to open up, but you can trust us. Your fears, doubts and weaknesses…don’t be hesitant to tell us about the, Syoko Hoshi. We’re here for you!”

Syoko seems as if she is about to start crying again. “I’m a demon, though…”

“So what? That doesn’t matter at all!” You cry. “Yeah, we killed a lot of demons in the war. But you’re not them. You didn’t pillage towns, rape women and slaughter innocent. You stood by our side, even against your own father. You knew he was a tyrannical bastard, so you opposed him. That’s something you can be proud of!”

“And besides, half the party isn’t exactly what I’d call fully human.” Kurumi adds. “I, for example, devoured the soul of an angel to gain my temporal powers.”

“I was engineered to be the perfect soldier. The concept of human rights didn’t apply to me, not at my birth.” Laura says. “Nanomachines run through my body and my skin is as tough as steel. STREUM is an even worse case: he is more machine than man."

“Ta-kun has a dragon living inside of him. Law-san ate a strange fruit and he can’t swim.” Hatoko continues. “And, um, none of us are sure what Courier Six is. But it doesn't matter at all!“

“And I’m the birth of a human and a fallen angel. There are few of my kind living in Japan. Because of this, my childhood was a difficult one. There wasn’t anybody I could talk to, play with.” Sachiko finishes. “Syoko. What I, and the rest of us, want to you to take from this is that it doesn’t matter what you are. It’s who you are that matters.”

“You’re Syoko Hoshi, our friend and our teammate.” Tatsuya says, smiling gently. “And you helped save the world. No matter what hardships plague you, we’ll fight them together. Please remember that.”

There is silence in the room. You see Syoko look at you, and the rest of your friends. Your smiling faces, your warm embraces. The realization dawns on her, and it is evident. More tears leak from her eyes, dripping onto her lap. And this time, they are not ones of sadness.

“Everyone…” Syoko sniffs again, “I-I’m sorry! I really have been such an idiot…”

“Just don’t do it in the future.” Is what you reply. “You’re ain’t worthless, Syoko. To all of us, you’re irreplaceable.”

Syoko’s cheeks blush pink. “T-thank you, Kazuya.”

“You have been an idiot, Syoko.” Laura sharply says. It causes the girl in question to wince. Sachiko chucks her German rival a small glare. Then her tone becomes much warmer, and she smiles. “But everybody is imperfect. I hope that you learn from your mistakes.”

“You know,” Kurumi suddenly pipes up, with that characteristic smirk of hers. “I think the time is right for a group hug.”

“W-what?” Syoko mutters.

“Come on, don’t be shy.” Kurumi’s hands are outstretched, like a predator. Her fingers are wiggling around. Syoko inches back nervously.

“I agree.” Laura says, standing up from her seat. “Let us commence.”

“But…”

“This is a great idea!” Hatoko gets up as well, radiant as the sun as always. "I'm all for it."

“Go for it, everybody!” Ayase grins, doing the same as her peers.

“I’ll take the lead!” Sachiko yells out, grabbing her friend and latching onto her.

You and Tatsuya can only stare at the sight of the five members of the harem leaping onto the mushroom girl. Tatsuya laughs. “Looks like it’s time for an All-Out Attack, Kaz. Accept or relent?”

You chuckle along. “Definitely accept.”

“Yosh! Here we go!”

And that is how the eight adolescents of the Party of Thirteen end up embracing each other in a mess of limbs and laughter. It is awesome, and heart-warming. Lord knows Syoko deserves it after all this time. It’s kinda packed in here, but all seven of your friends seem to be in high spirits. Syoko is laughing and crying at the same time, her mouth wide open with joy. Ayase and Kurumi are playing with her long silver hair.

You are glad. Part of the weight has been lifted off your shoulders. You are truly, honestly happy that she has cheered up.

Eventually the eight of you separate, your faces flush with adrenaline. There is not a single frown in the room.

What will you do now?

“Say Syoko, why don’t you stay over at Tatsuya’s place today?” You suggest.

“Eh?” Syoko looks like a deer caught in headlights. “Sleep at Tatsuya’s house?”

“Yeah. You’ve never had a sleepover here before? Most of the time you stay at Sachiko’s. Man, even Courier Six and Law have slept in one of the guest rooms…”

“That’s…a bit concerning.” Syoko mumbles. “Now I feel left out…”

“I think it’s a good idea.” Ayase says. “Syoko-chan shouldn’t be left alone in her room today. She needs company.”

“Well if Syoko is staying over, then so am I!” Sachiko proudly announces, puffing out her chest. “Hmm, and since I’m so generous and kind, I’ll invite Kazuya to stay over as well. What do you think, Narukami-kun?”

You shrug your shoulders. “Sure, why not? I was about to ask myself. Why are you making such a big deal of this, though?”

“Mmm…I wonder?”

“Hey…”

Tatsuya snickers, covering his mouth with his palm. He looks at his cousin. “Is that okay with you, Ayase?”

The girl in question looks half-way through making an objection, the words even coming out half-heartedly. Then she shrugs her shoulders and gives up. “Ah, today’s a special occasion. Alright, the three of you can stay over. But Sachiko…”

“Yes?” Sachiko replies in that sweet voice of hers, like oozing honey from a beehive.

“You have to stay in one of the guest rooms.” Ayase points a finger at Sachiko’s temple, as if she is preparing to fire a bullet from her polished nail. “So does Kazuya. Syoko can stay in my room, though. Give me some time to clear out the knives first.”

“Then where the heck are you going to sleep?” You query, raising an eyebrow. You notice your shades are still in your pocket, so you slip them back on. Smooth as silk.

“I’ll sleep on the couch. Don’t worry about me.”

“Actually, do you mind if I sleep on the couch tonight?” You ask.

“…why?” Ayase looks bewildered.

You stride over and pat the upper portion with confidence. You feel the soft, brown leather gently caressing the edges of your skin. Goddamn, this is one fine couch. Five stars, in the top percentage, fit for a king and a bunch of other phrases. “Because this couch is as comfy as hell.”

“Say what?” Ayase deadpans.

“Seriously, look at this thing. Don’t you see how magnificent it is?”

“No. Kazuya, it’s a couch.” Ayase replies, twitching a little. “There’s nothing special about it.”

“I wouldn’t expect you to understand. You tastes in furniture are just as bad as your taste in anime characters.”

“Hey, take that back!” Ayase snarls. “That’s a low blow and you know it.”

Somehow the argument delves from one about couches to one about anime. You and Ayase kick up a storm about the intricacies and finer details of Japanese comedy shows. Characters are compared, animation is lambasted and entire episodes are labelled as waste. Laura presses a palm to her forehead and sighs. Syoko looks around in confusion. Hatoko and your bro glance at each other and giggle. Kurumi shakes her head. Ultimately, the right of sleeping on the couch is granted to you, after a long and brutal verbal battle between berserker and assassin.

“What battle?” Ayase groans. “There was nothing to fight!”
>>
>>40209484
Sorry Ayase, not our fault your tastes are such a shit they don't deserve the couch.
>>
“Well, now that’s out of the way.” You say, dusting your hands with triumph. “Let’s take care of the letters. Laura, can you get STREUM to analyse them?”

“It shouldn’t be a problem. We have several pieces of detection equipment at our bunker.” Laura replies. “There is one thing that concerns me, though.”

“What is it?”

“Where is your schoolbag? You arrived at my wife’s home without it.”

“Ah, I think I left it at school. I’ll get it on the weekend. All of my stuff is sealed inside my locker anyways.”

“Your locker was left open, though.” Syoko points out.

In the resulting quietness, the sound of a pin dropping would’ve had the exact same impact as a stack of china plates breaking against the ground.

“Oh shit!” Like a panther on the receiving end an electric shock, you leap up in your place and bolt for the door. Power is pumped to your legs, and you quickly gain superhuman speed. Yes, you are fully aware it is something you shouldn’t be doing, but there are more urgent matters right now. What if someone steals your stuff and puts it up for auction on the Internet? You can imagine the headlines…

>EXCLUSIVE MATHS TEXTBOOK HELD BY KAZUYA NARUKAMI HIMSELF. BEGINNING PRICE AT 10,000 YEN.

Fuck! That sounds horrible!

You pick up the pace. Luckily the school gate is still open, otherwise you might have felled it with a single kick.

By some divine miracle, it turns out that absolutely bloody nobody has dared to touch your books. You get the feeling that your little outburst at the shoe lockers must’ve scared your fellow students off. Not that you are complaining, mind. You quickly grab your bag and race out the school door.

You notice someone

“Laura?”

“Kazuya.” She responds, blinking once.

“What are you doing here?”

“STREUM asked me to buy groceries. We’re out of vegetables. He was particularly insistent too.” Laura states. You open your mouth to question something. She cuts you off by placing a palm outwards. “If it’s about the letters, don’t worry about them. We’ll begin the analysis the moment I return. I do not expect to sleep much tonight.”

“Yeah, that’s how STREUM is…” When the time had come for Laura to receive a new IS suit, STREUM had teamed up with this rabbit-obsessed scientist lady. The two of them worked inside a bunker in the middle of the ocean, not stopping for five whole days. When Laura finally assumed full control over the machine, the two crazed genii of science breathed heavy sighs of relief…and promptly crashed into sleep on the spot. Guy hated leaving problems unsolved. It was in his nature.

“May I accompany you?” Laura walks over to your side. “My home is this way.”

“Uh, sure. Go for it.”

So that’s how you wind up strolling with Laura. It’s getting late; the sun is beginning to fall under the horizon and be replaced with the murkiness of the night. Amaterasu’s job is finished for the day and now it’s Tsukuyomi’s turn. The number of cars and buses on the streets are beginning to increase. The smell of petrol fills the air.

“How do you feel, Kazuya?” Laura abruptly says.

“What do you mean, Laura?”

“You looked very aggressive when I saw you at Tatsuya’s house.” Laura responds. “It was like you had just massacred your way through a horde of danger-beasts and was contemplating picking off the remaining stragglers. You weren’t hiding your killing intent at all.”

“Oh yeah. That. Yeah, I was kinda pissed off. I mean, more so than what my usual anger is like. And aren’t you angry, too?”

“I am. Very much so. Whoever send these letters will receive the full punishment they deserve.” Laura growls. “But your anger was almost beyond comprehension. It was like you were contemplating killing someone.”

You see her turn a solitary red eye towards you. “Do you feel like maiming the ones who wrote the letters? As in, do you want to physically harm them?”

“No, not anymore.” You admit. The red mist has long since faded from your eyes. Syoko’s smile and the laughter of your friends has seen to that. “I’m still mad at them of course, but I won’t use violence against them.”

Laura nods and smiles. “Part of me was concerned you would. Now, I feel relieved. I apologize for doubting you.”

“No, it’s okay…”

You walk further.

“Kazuya, do you feel guilty?”

“No. I don’t regret convincing Syoko to come to school with us.” You reply. “But I wasn’t there when she needed someone to be. So I guess I regret that.”

“Are you angry about it?”

“Damn straight I am.” You growl. “Well, Syoko cheered better, so I feel less shit about myself, but I still can’t forgive myself for ignoring her.”

Laura stares off into the distance. “You are not alone. It was a disgrace that we let it slide under our noses. Hatoko, Kurumi, Koshimizu, Ayase, and my wife…we all understand.”

The two of you stop at the edges of a road, waiting for the cards to pass by. When it’s clear, you cross quickly and cleanly.

“I’m glad you don’t feel any regret for having Syoko come to A-1 with us, though.” Laura says. “It would be troubling if you did.”

“How come?”

“Because you made the right decision, of course.” Laura looks at you, a grin displayed on her lips. “Syoko shouldn’t hole up in her room all day. She won’t learn to cope with human society if she does that. Everyone thought it was a great idea.”

“Yeah. I wanted to see how great this world of ours was.” You sigh. You had been so excited, and Syoko had shared the same sentiments. Then fate conspired to drive all your plans into the shitter. “Too bad it all went hell to a handbasket after a week…”

“Admittedly, you might have been a bit naive and hasty in your actions. I for one did have my doubts of sending a demon girl into an area full of humans.” Laura murmurs. “But I can’t deny that your heart was in the right place. You saw your friend needed help, so you did the best you could. You should be proud of what you did.”

“Laura…”

“Besides, you aren’t god, Kazuya. You can’t plan for every contingency. What happened to Syoko was not entirely your fault. The responsibility falls onto those who sent her the letters, and all of us for not noticing sooner. Additionally…”

“What?”

Laura turns to you again. “Syoko did have fun at school with us, don’t you agree? She was truly happy to spend time together with her friends. Your efforts weren’t a complete waste.”

Tatsuya’s house is approaching in the distance. The sun has almost set now.

“Okay, I’ll be leaving now.” Laura says. “STREUM and I should have every last piece of information about the senders by the end of the weekened.”

“Thanks, Laura.” You smirk. Your heart feels lighter, somehow.

She nods and smiles again, before jogging off into the distance.

“Have fun at the sleepover.”

“I wonder what Syoko is doing…” Ayase said she was lending her room to Syoko, right? You head upstairs to check. While you do so, you hear the voices of your other two female companions.

“You are not staying in Onii-san’s room, Sachiko.”

“Ufufu, and why is that?”

“Because you already have a guest room, that’s why!”

You ignore them and knock on the door to Syoko’s room. The force of it causes it to swing open. It was actually unlocked! What a surprise. If you were your bro, this would inevitably lead to a situation where you stumble across the half-naked form of the harem members. After several seconds of gaping at each other silence, the girl would become enraged and forcefully eject you out of the room. Humiliation would then follow.

But since you are not Tatsuya, you walk into the scene of a fully clothed Syoko, still dressed in her school uniform, sitting on the bed and staring out of the window.

“Kazuya?” She yelps. “Oh…you’re back.”

“Sorry. Should I have knocked?” You rub the back of your neck. Syoko shakes her head.

“No, it’s okay…um, come on in.”

You oblige and sit down next to her. True to her word, Ayase has successfully cleaned the room of her knives. Only a few ornate ones, used for decoration purposes only, hang from the walls. Most of her equipment is gone, presumably packed away inside wooden boxes and stored in one of the guest rooms. Ayase was always fussy about housework.

“So…you feel any better?”

“Yes.” Syoko responds. “I’m not crying anymore, see? Although, I still feel kinda dazed inside…”

“…I’m glad you’re not too hurt.”

“Thanks…”

The atmosphere is getting kinda awkward. You need to find a topic to talk about.

>“You know, there's never really been a chance to talk about your family. What were they like?”
>“Want to hang out with Ayase and Sachiko?”

“Hey Syoko.”

“What is it?”

“Was school fun for you?”

This question definitely gives her pause for thought. She look down and twiddles her thumbs, her mouth curling in distaste. “I don’t know, Kazuya. I learned a lot of new things and my classmates were okay to me, but most of the time I didn’t really understand what they were chatting about. Then there were the letters that arrived in my shoe locker. Even so…”

She looks up at you and grants you a tiny grin. “I was glad you and the others were there for me. Eating lunch with everyone was fun. It makes me wish I was in your class instead of down a grade…”

“Yeah, I know.” You had desired the same thing, but didn’t think much of it at the time. If Syoko had done better on the entrance exam and entered the second year level, would things be different? Had bro and the rest been around to protect her, would she still be harassed the way she is now?

“You don’t hate school, do you?” You ask.

Syoko shakes her head, much to your relief. “No, I don’t. B-but I don’t want to see those letters again…”

The two of you continue to sit in peace. Syoko fidgets. You’re not sure why.

“Say, we’ve never really had a chance to talk about your family, Syoko.” You mutter out loud. It’s been bugging you for a while. Yes, you know who is in the Underworld royalty, but Syoko has never once talked about her childhood, not even during the war.

“My f-family?” Syoko squeaks. “T-that’s…”

“I wonder what they were like.”

“I…I don’t think…”

Your eyes widen. You wave your hands about in a gesture of surrender. “But hey, if you don’t want to talk about it, you don’t have to. Um, entitlement to privacy and everything. Just ignore me.”

“N-no! It’s okay!” Syoko shouts. Then she blushes and turns her head away. “I mean…I mean I think I can trust you, Kazuya. If I tell you, I think I can handle it.”

“Oh. Uh, okay then.” You scratch your head. “If you’re really fine with it.”

“S-so. I guess I’ll start with Mama first. Her real name was Lillian. She used to be the daughter of a noble, sent to the royal palace to serve there. Fa—I mean, Azazel became smitten with her after she appeared inside the royal court for some time. That’s how she became one of his many wives and eventually gave birth to me…”

“Did she love you a lot?”

“Yes.” Syoko closes her eyes and places her hands on her chest. A nostalgic smile appears on her, peaceful and fond. “Mama was a busy woman. She wanted to make life better for the common demons of the Underworld and engaged in large scale political battles with her rivals. It was hard for her, and she rarely won. Despite it all, she never gave up and she always found time to play with me at the end of the day.”

“What kinds of stuff did the two of you do together?”

“She would read me stories, comb my hair and take me out into the castle gardens. She could pick me up as child and take me flying into the skies. When she had more time on her hands, she would play silly games like hide-and-seek or tag with me. She would tuck me into bed at night and kiss me on the forehead. I wish those days could’ve gone forever.” Syoko’s head droops, and she frowns. “Mama left when I was six. I was sent to live with Nee-sama instead.”

You know exactly what she means. It isn’t good.

“I’m really sorry. That’s must’ve been tough to go through…” You mutter, now guilty. “Your mother sounds a good person who wasn’t in a great place.”

“It’s fine.”

“Look, you don’t have to keep talking if you ain’t comfortable. Maybe we should call it a day.”

“No, I said I was fine. Besides,” Syoko looks up at you. “I need to get this off my chest.”

“…if you say so”

Syoko takes a deep breathe, and continues. “Nee-sama…after Mama went away, Nee-sama took me in. I remember arriving at her palace and meeting her. She was strikingly beautiful and her home was the biggest I had ever seen. She was surrounded by her inner circle. Everyone was so tall and big, it made really scared.”

Syoko looks to the window. It is getting dark. Already the moon has appeared in the sky. “Nee-sama wasn’t as caring as Mama. I think she didn’t know how to handle me, so she confined me in the castle. She rarely visited, and when she wanted to tell me something she would get one of her servants to do so. I guess because of her I became more and more isolated as I grew up. I spend most of my time reading books and experimenting in my garden.”

You wince. “That sucks…”

“Something strange must’ve happened to her though, because three years before the war she came to me personally and asked members of her inner circle to train me. I didn’t think much of it at the time and hated the training. But looking back, those skills helped me to survive. I guess Nee-sama cared more about me than she let on…”

If the Silver Queen really loved Syoko like a sister, she would’ve more time with her. Instead, she ignored your friend for most of her life. That is what you think.
>>
>>40211603
Don't worry

I just hope that we have an older brother who taught us that bros come first.
>>
“As for Azazel…Mama said that he loved each and every one of his children. But the more I think about it, she was probably telling me a white lie to make me feel better as a child.”

Syoko finishes her tale. More silence. Then she speaks again.

“You know, as a child, I often wondered why I was alive. Everything collapsed when Mama went away, and I was sent into despair. I didn’t have any friends in the Underworld, even among my half-siblings.” You look at Syoko now, and realize that she is smiling softly. She turns her body around, and looks at you deep in the eyes.

“But, I’m glad Kazuya. I’m glad I can be with you and everyone else. I’m happy that I lived on, and found my nakama. Just as Mama said I would…”

You chuckle, and reach out for your head. You gently pat it.

“Yeah. I’m glad that you're with each other too, Syoko.”

The two of you stay like that for a while, enjoying each other’s company.

“Kazuya! Syoko!” A sudden voice jerks you out of your thoughts. It’s Ayase. She standing at the entrance, grinning widely. “Sachiko found a copy of the Game of Life in one of the guest rooms. Let’s go and play it!”

“Um, now?” Syoko asks. “It’s nearly dinner time…”

“We can get one round in. Onii-san is playing as well. Come on!”

With that, she exits the room and bounds downstairs to the lower floor.

You look at Syoko, and laugh. “Looks like we don’t have a choice. Ayase will get mad if we don’t show up.”

Syoko nods. “Then let’s go then…”

Together, both of you stand up in sync and exit the bedroom to follow Ayase downstairs.

With that, we’ll end for today. Thank you to everyone who participated. There was a slow start at first, but I think I got into the groove by the end.

I’m afraid I have bad news now. Exams are coming up soon, and I won’t be able to hold any sessions for a while. By my estimates, the next thread will be on 16th of July, 9:30 pm UTC. I’ll let you guys know on Twitter on all that jazz.

Another thing: someone once said that my writing was mechanically weak and my characters sucked. I keep all criticism in mind and I’m trying to fix my problems. If you feel that I could’ve written such and such better, don’t be afraid to tell me. I won’t improve if I don’t know where I suck, after all.

If Kazuya and Tatsuya fought one on one with nothing holding them back, Tatsuya would eventually win. Probably by activating Ouroboros Soul and beating Kazuya to death with his bare hands. Though it would be a victory as hollow as the abyss itself.

>You die as a hero or live long enough to become the villain.

This sentence always made me wonder if people understood what it meant.

Not only this was used to show Harvey Dent's absolute, clear-cut view of morality (either hero or villain, no in-between), but it's also a sophism: of course you either die a hero or become a villain in a world where you can only be one or the other. A guy could live 120 years, spending them saving people, and die without doing one mean things, and he would die as a hero. It doesn't mean "people who don't die in an heroic endeavor will become bad guys."
