Haha, bit of a later start than I intended, sorry. Got caught up planning a meal for the weekend. For myself, I mean.

Incidentally, I think our next MC will be able to cook. haha.

Anywhats, no real news here. I've got an ask.fm account, so we won't be doing anymore Q&A sessions in threads, unless i either get really bored or planefag drops the ball somewhere. Either is possible, though. hahah.

True to her predictions, you and Katya had about fifteen minutes of time alone before the girls were knocking at the door, complaining of bad dreams again. You hadn't even started undressing- a shame, really.

You were just a little suspicious- they've never really disguised their general dislike of Katya, though they've never really acted on it. You suspect that's more because of you than anything on their part- they tolerate her for your sake, as it were. Clearly, this does not extend to allowing you time alone with her for any longer than a few minutes.

You were going to send them back to their beds, perhaps sit with them until they were asleep again, but Katya beat you to the punch, telling the both of them it was ok, they could sleep with you tonight. They'd looked suspicious at the generosity on her part, probably not expecting it. To be fair, you weren't expecting it, either. Still, neither of them complained, sandwiched as they were between her and you. You decided, after they'd fallen asleep while you and Katya had remained awake, reading, that you'd have to say something, eventually- this kind of behavior can't continue forever. You've been willing to let it go till now because of how little you know about their past, but it won't be healthy to ignore it, either.

1/2 (I hope)
>>
Either way, you woke up to the two of them still there, Stasya curled up against you and Lilya sleeping peacefully under one of Katya's outstretched arms. It had been a bit of a challenge to get up without disturbing them, though you managed to pull it off tolerably enough that they didn't wake up until after you'd showered and dressed.

Your light breakfast had been interrupted by Brigitte, bringing in mail for you and Katya. Formal things, she'd explained- greetings from the German coven and the Matrons of Berlin, and a more formal, written request to meet Stasya and Lilya. That one is carefully worded and makes it painfully clear they not only expect you to be there, either with or without Katya, but that they'll happily accept any decision you make about what is- and isn't- ok to ask the girls.

Plus, of course, there's Anya. You and Katya hadn't really talked much about it yesterday, with each other or the girls, but it's going to be something you do need to handle- and soon. You're sure all the various matrons in the city are anxious to talk to the girl, and unlike with Stasya and Lilya, there's no guardian of witches to go through to get to her. While you doubt they'll engage in any high intensity interrogation, you have your doubts that her mental state is going to be up to even the personal questions the matrons would be asking. Part of you feels like you should step in, there, though you're still not really sure how much actual power you have to do so.

2/3 (haha, nope)
>>
The problem is, will all these things to handle, your day is almost completely full. You know the matrons have the clout to bump themselves to the top of your to do list if you agree to talk to them- and might be willing to buy you some time to take care of something that doesn't involve the brass or politicians, but at the same time, it's not every day the commandant of the UN defense forces asks to speak to a pilot- even one like you- personally, face-to-face. You doubt he'd care too much about another couple of hours, but then again, you don't think the matrons would care too much either.

[] I'll see the UN Commandant first, since that's directly duty related.
[] We'll talk to the Matrons first, it could be a lead on the girl's histories.

Like, there's nothing inherently wrong with them but they introduce something rather fundamental into a quest.
Without dice, the only resolution mechanic is voter choice. The QM presents options, and the outcomes depend on which one the players pick. People can cry about terrible voters all they want, but in the end success or failure rides upon what the QM offers and writes.
With write-in votes this gets a bit more wibbly, but the final conclusion still stands.

With dice, success or failure is a step removed from the players and the QM. Sure, the QM can always bullshit things, and how much of an effect the dice have on events is still up to him, but with dice it is possible to do nothing wrong and still fail.
That's a perfectly acceptable game philosophy, but it's drastically different from when dice are absent.
>>
>>40202875
To be fair, Ghost has implemented the vote system for two quest-seasons now. Considering that the next quest might be a new MC, a change in game mechanics is welcome.

That's just my opinion though. I don't know what the others think.
>>

[x] I'll see the UN Commandant first, since that's directly duty related.

Duty takes precedence over the matrons, you decide- while they're anxious to meet the girls, they can wait another couple hours you figure. You help clean up the table while you have Stasya fetch Brigitte, who was waiting outside.

She saunters in with that easy gait she seems to adopt in 'relaxed' settings, sprawling herself over a chair, draping one leg over the armrest. “So,” She says, grinning at you and Katya. “Who I be takin ya to see first, hmm? Mebby de chaplains?”

Katya laughs. “There is no wedding yet, Brigitte.”

“A pity.” She says

“We’re going to see the commandant.” You say, before the two of them really get going.

“We?” Brigitte asks. “No, I tink ya misunderstood baron. He wantin to see you, not you and de little ones and Katya.”

“But-” You start to protest, she manages to cut it off with another catlike grin.

“I tink ya be jus fine for an hour or so widout bein surrounded by girls, oui baron?” She says. “Besides, mebby it be givin Katya and dem some time to be bondin.”

You notice the girls look at each other, then over at Katya, who gives them a tentative smile.

“You're coming with?” You ask. Brigitte nods.

“O course.” She responds. “You tink dey jus let ya be drivin around unescorted?” She laughs.

“We could always go see Anya.” Katya says, thoughtfully- the girls both look sharply at her, then over at you.

[] I'd like to come along, if you can wait
[] Yeah, that makes sense. I'll see the commandant, you go talk to Anya, then we'll meet to talk to the Matrons.
>>
>>40202875
The ideal setup would probably be a mix of the two. If it's not done very carefully, making success and failure dependent entirely on player choices can lead to a situation where one option is clearly better than the others, or options that look reasonable come with a hidden trap that will fuck the players over without them ever being able to see it coming. Or none of the choices lead to failure in the first place, which can make the choices completely pointless.

Dice rolls allow for more leeway. You can give the options a higher chance of success depending on what they choose to do, but success and failure aren't a foregone conclusion.
>>
>>40202972
I doubt that the night will be successful, what with the girls having nightmares. And if we recruit Anya then she might jump to conclusions about the noise.

Thus, we REALLY need soundproofing boards.
>>

Yeah. Though,
>but success and failure aren't a foregone conclusion.
Is correct, the POSSIBILITY of failure is always there. No matter how you stack the odds, there's always the chance that with dice you will fail. Unless you don't do critfails, in which case certain rolls become equivalent to simple votes
Or unless you have something like Star Power to remedy bad rolls, which adds a nice dimension of player resource management to offset the whims of fate.
Shrug.

[x] Yeah, that makes sense. I'll see the commandant, you go talk to Anya, then we'll meet to talk to the Matrons.

You nod. “Yeah, that makes sense, especially given how she reacted to me yesterday.” You say, noting the faint frown on Sasya's face. “I'll go see the commandant, you three go talk to Anya, then we'll meet to talk to the Matrons.”

Brigitte nods, apparently satisfied enough with the response. “Wid dat sorted, we need ta be goin, baron.” She says, standing up and brushing off her uniform blouse, straightening it out. “We not runnin late, no, but we will be if we be stayin heah much longah.”

You nod, hugging both the girls and taking your cover from Stasya before kissing Katya and heading out of the door with Brigitte.

“So where are we meeting him?” You ask. “We're a long way from New York.”

Brigitte laughs. “Like dey be tryin ta get me dat far north. We be meetin him heah in de city, De UN annex neah de government buildings, ovah in de Tiergarten.” Her pronunciation of the last makes you look over at her. She shrugs. “De German language and de cajun tounge, dey don't be getting along well, no.” She says.

She guides you to a waiting sedan, taking the driver's seat while you take the passenger's side.

“So what's he want to talk about, anyway?” You ask as she merges into traffic.

For the first time you think in ever, you see her hesitate. “Deah be some... questions.” She says, after a second. “Bout how ya be knowin ta go after dat bomber, and why dat bomb go off de way it do.”

>>
“So I've gotta defend what I did?” You ask. “Maybe I need to stop doing this kind of thing.”

“Ya need ta stop, cos ya be havin two little ones ta be comin home for.” Brigitte corrects. “Dis got nuttin ta do wid dat. Dey be worried ya be knowin, and dat how ya be knowin, dat be something anyone else can do. De nuclear bomb, it be de UN's best weapon foah makin sure de Martians, dey don't be tryin again. If ya be able to spot dem before dey dropped, dat mean mebby someone else can.”

“And maybe that someone else will be a squid?” You ask.

She nods. “Dat be de problem. 'Tween you and me, baron, I tink dey just panicking. Dey be tryin to do someting, anyting, jus ta not be tinking bout it."

You shrug. "Not hard to see why they would be."

She nods again. "Oui, I be knowin. De point be, I don't tink dey really be after ya like dat. I tink dey just so scared dey not really be knowin what else ta be doin. Dey be axin maman bout a plan ta go in and disable megalith too, ya be knowin dat?" She laughs. "Like dat someting dat can be done. I tole dem dey be needin an army ta take de place, dey jus nodded like dey be tinkin o givin maman one!"

You snort, and she shakes her head.

"Dey scared, dat be all, baron." She says again. "Jus tell dem the truth, ya be fine."

>>
You nod as she pulls up to the gate of the UN building here in Berlin and flashes her ID at the guard. You see him take it and blink when he reads it- then hand it back and salute as Brigitte drives past and parks the car.

Inside the building, she leads you to an elevator, letting you get in first, then closing the door, smiling and shaking her head at a trio of people looking to make it over to catch the ride up.

At the top floor, you're met again by a group of guards, this time in the darker service uniform of the UNDF, their G3 BK rifles slung across their chests. Brigitte openly eyes one of the rifles then grins at the trooper carrying it while they examine your IDs again. They let you pass after a minute, while Brigitte guides you further into the building till she stops in front of a nondescript door and knocks.

She opens it to a half-heard response and motions you in, standing outside herself.

Inside, you're greeted by the well-known commandant of the UNDF, General Cheung, originally from China. He's joined by the UN's headmatron, a German witch named Wick. The room itself looks to be a fairly plain meeting room- a long table dominates the center, while chairs line either side. The back wall is a window, looking out across the tiergarten and the river in the distance.

"Ah, Lieutenant commander Bishop." The general says, standing and returning your salute, before shaking your hand. "We've heard quite a lot about you."

[x] I hope it's mostly good?

You try out a grin. "I hope it's mostly good, sir?"

He chuckles. "Mostly. It seems to depend upon whom I'm hearing it from. The Soviet union is convinced you're some kind of bioweapon and that we should be investigating America for breeches of the treaty of Warsaw." He shakes his head, then looks over at you. "You're not, are you?"

"Not as far as I'm aware of, no." You respond, glad to see he's got a sense of humor.

He nods. "Good to hear." He motions for you to take a seat, then sits himself at the head of the table, matron Wick sitting to his right. "I want to start out by telling you that this is not a court martial or anything of the sort, lieutenant commander. We're simply curious."

You nod. "I'd guessed you might be, sir."

"Nuclear weapons are some of mankind's best defenses against extraterrestrial threats. Megalith, Stonehenge, and Chandelier all use them, Arkbird can be equipped with them, and general use in warfare is strictly prohibited." He says. "But their effect lies in us being able to deliver them. You understand why we're concerned about you being able to detect this warhead?"

Hm.

Who told the Commandant that we had some sort of ESP that can detect nukes then?

Also weird signature could've meant anything from just a new type of bomb or just a bunch of rocks in there. Seriously though we've got to explain that we're WAY out of our league here; it's better to talk to Merlin who built the sensor suite herself than us, who just flies the plane.

As I see it:
There's a bunch of fighters
And then there's a Blackjack. On the front line. In a furball.
I mean that's suspicious as fuck. So yeah.

I mean I get it, everyone is rattled because "OMG NUKE" but it was an out of place plane, in a pitched battle, and a rather conspicuous one at that.

It's not that hard to put 2 and 2 together and assume it was important for other reasons that "IT MUST HAVE A NUKE ON IT".

>>
>>40205693
IRL no, we base most of our detection methods off of spy sats, earthquake monitoring and well the fact that when an ICBM launches, it becomes very very obvious. Also good ol' fashioned spying.
>>
>>40205693
We have radiation detectors though they don't detect nukes, they're there for dirty bombs terrorist would use. We've got early warning radar that looks for ICBMs which is the more likely way of delivery.

"Kind of, sir." You say, and he nods.

"The trouble we're having is one that is related to an ongoing argument in the EDF." He says, pouring himself a glass of water from a pitcher on the table. "We rely on nuclear warheads to provide the bulk of our offensive punch, but we don't have that many, just a few hundred around the world. The plan has always been to launch conventional warheads as well, and seed the nukes throughout the barrage."

"But if someone knows which missiles to hit with interceptors..." You say, trailing off as the general nods.

"Exactly. What we need to know is how you did it."

she never said it was bad. Just that it was emitting strange energy signals and that we should pay attention to it.

While we didn't know the Blackjack was carrying a nuke, it doesn't take a genius to figure out a strategic bomber in that position is up to no good.
>>40207215
Better not, we can argue the point that since the Reds have already used nukes we need Merlin even more incase they try that shit again/
>>
>>40207215

Why would it? If it wasn't little sister, then it would've been someone else manning the DRADIS suite onboard the Wyvern.

It's the Wyvern that detected the strange signature. Merlin just pointed it out to us and we decided to investigate.

[x] My RIO, sir. She detected there was something strange about that bomber before we intercepted.

"My RIO, sir. Lieutenant Samantha Wells. She detected there was something strange about that bomber before we made the intercept." You say, then shrug. "Though they could have done a better job of hiding it, an unescorted bomber that close to a furball is an item of interest no matter how you look at it."

He snorts. "Regardless of that, you said your RIO was able to detect the warhead in the bomber?"

"Not specifically, no sir." You say. "Only that it was putting out an odd signature. We didn't know what it was, until... " You pause, seeing the scorching white flash in your mind, clear as day.

He nods, seemingly missing the pause. "But she was able to detect something. That's the problem. We'll have to talk to her at some point, as well, I'm thinking."

The matron snorts, causing general Cheung to look over at her. "Good luck." She says. "Lieutenant Samantha Wells is impossible to get at. We've been trying. The American coven won't let us even approach her, and even if they did, the Japanese would block it." She honestly sounds kind of bitter. "She's the strongest machine talent ever, and no one can touch her."

>>
The general looks back at you. "Sounds like your backseater is quite the girl, lieutenant commander." He says. "But we'll worry about that later. Do you know how she detected the warhead?"

You shake your head. "No sir, I don't. She warned me through the link about it, we went to check it out. Tried to shoot it down before it crossed back into soviet airspace, they detonated their weapon when it was clear they weren't getting away."

He nods again. "Well. This is certainly troubling. Of course, we're far more concerned with the fact that USSR deployed nuclear weapons against human targets, but you being able to detect them is deeply worrying as well. Thank you for speaking with us, lieutenant commander. Do you have any questions for me before you leave?"

[x] Any way I can get Brigitte one of those fancy looking rifles?

You grin. "Any way I can get Brigitte one of those fancy looking rifles?" You ask.

He leans back in his chair. "One of our battle rifles? you know those are tightly controled, right?"

"If you can get me one for her, I can talk to Merlin, see if I can get her to come in and talk with you later." You offer, figuring fair's fair.

"You think you could do that?" He asks.

You shrug. "Sure, I don't think it'd be too much of a problem. At the very least I could try to get her to do a writeup for you."

"If you can bring her in, you can have as many rifles as you want." He says. "I'll give you two for now, call it a goodwill gesture. In the meantime, while I'm sure Dick still has my contact information, take this." He hands you a simple business card, emblazoned with the logo of the UN defense forces on the front.

"That has my office number on it." He says as you flip the card over to find some numbers written on it. "I'll call down to the armory in the basement, they'll give you the rifles."

From there it's clear you're dismissed. You salute again, walking out to find Brigitte waiting across the hall, sitting on a couch there in a common area. She looks up as you approach and grins.

"Ah, de baron return to me." She says, standing up. "How it go?"

You shrug. "Not bad. got a surprise for you."

"Anoddah suprise?" She asks. "Baron, yah be spoilin a girl. May jus have ta steal ya away from dem tree and keep yah for meself."

You laugh. "Good luck. Let's go."

You head back to the elevator, noting that Brigitte frowns when you set it for the basement.

"Baron, much as I be likin ya, we do be havin tings ta do." She says, as you follow the signs through the fairly spartan basement towards the armory. "We mebby find a secluded closet, oui, but maman don't be poachin from her sister witches like dat, no."

>>
"I thought you just said something about stealing me a minute ago." You say, teasingly.

"Dat be different, if ya be leaving on ya own. Now spill, where you leadin maman?"

"Ahah. Here." You say, turning into the armory. She follows you in, looking at the sparse room, the back wall broken by a counter, the opening above it covered in bars, and a steel security door.

She stays quiet as you get one of the armorers over and show him your ID- and doesn't question it when he slides you a pair of the rifles and a flimsy cardboard box full of empty magazines. He has you sign it out, then scowls and makes a mark of his own in the record book, completing the whole transaction without a word.

Brigitte looks at you suspiciously when you hand her one of the rifles and half the magazines.

"You said you wanted one, right?" You ask, slinging the other across your back. "Well, there you go."

She turns it over in her hands, then slings it and nods. "Gonna haveta steal ya for myself for true now." She says with a grin. "tink I'll warn dem befoah I do dat, oui. Tank you, baron."

You laugh, returning her hug- she put extra effort to smash her chest into you, though she can't really compare with Slider in that department. "Anytime. Let's go catch up with the girls and Anya."

She nods, and the two of you head out of the building, garnering some strange looks as you walk to the car and deposit the rifles in the back. You note that Brigitte already has a compact rifle back there, along with a pistol and a hatchet.

Along with the pistol on her thigh, it's quite an impressive load for the middle of a friendly city hundreds of miles off the lines.

Your drive to the security building is quick, though you're stopped outside it by a pair of armed tankwitches.

Brigitte frowns and steps out of the car, motioning for you to stay inside and converses, quickly with one of them, then frowns, and looks back at you.

2/3
>>
You know that look, and it's never, ever good. She walks back to the car, opening the trunk.

"Brigitte?" You ask, getting out.

"Get one dem rifle, come heah." She says, quietly. You obey, grabbing one of the rifles and she tosses you a box of the 7.62 ammo they use. "Yah know how ta be usin dat?"

You nod, opening the box and starting to load the magazines. "What's going on."

"Dat Anya. She manage ta knock out Your Katya and make a break out wid your little ones. Dey trackin her now, dey makin for de swiss embassy. Dere be a choppah on de way, we goan be on it."

"If they get there?" You ask, automatically loading ammo in the magazines, your mind racing.

"Den it become my realm." She says. "Don be worryin none, baron. We be gettin dem back befoah dat happen. You trust maman."

You nod, slapping a mag in place and trying to look like you know what you're doing. Brigitte smiles at you as the thudding of rotor blades reaches you. "I be knowin bettah dan ta be axin ya ta be sittin back foah dis. But you do maman a favoah an you be followin my lead." She says, looking over at the witches and jerking her head at you. "How good are yah bein wid dat rifle?"

"My dad was force recon, mom taught us to shoot on her M-14." You respond.

Brigitte nods. "Shoulda known." She says as the chopper heaves into view- a black army bird, one with odd angles to it.

Part of you, the small part that's not rapidly going into that combat mindset, thinks fuck. Not another helicopter.

MOVE 3: Initiative, Material, Development

Minister Takakura is dead, sir.

Oh, is that so? His complacency came back to bite him, it seems.

Things are still pretty quiet in the lower and middle echelons, but the higher-ups in the intelligence ministry are starting to panic, sir.

I pity the fools. Resting too much on their laurels, thinking that no one would see through their charade. If a purge takes effect I wouldn’t be too surprised.

That seems highly unlikely sir. Considering the situation our country is in right now…

Oh, I was just joking, joking! Anyway, what else do you have for me?

We’ve just confirmed that all classified information that he withheld from the Emperor have been retrieved by whoever broke into his compound, sir.

Very thorough, I see. Good thing we were able to eliminate any data he had on the Amaryllis before things got leaked, eh?

Indeed sir, although I’m worried he may still have some bits of information concerning Amaryllis stashed elsewhere…

My dear, dear protégé, you worry too much! You are still pretty young and yet, you think like an old man! That won’t do you any good, you know.

All due respect sir, it doesn’t really make a difference to me.

Quite the resolve. I suggest you get that game face on for when the main phase begins, though. For now, be a good lad and fetch me my Bourbon Santos.

ICHIMONJI’S SMILE STRETCHED from ear to ear as she set the safety on her MP5A3 before laying it down on the bench. She was literally skipping her way to Admiral Aikawa, her smile still unwavering as she closed in on her ‘prey’. “Looks like I win this one, Admiral!”

Aikawa, for his part, was distraught, or at least looked like it. Seeing no other recourse, he raised his hands up in surrender. “All right, you got me there Ensign. Congratulations.” The assembled crewmen and aviators cheered in approval as the officer and the witch shook hands. Wholly justified, as it was an excellent shooting match overall, although it took a bit longer than planned.

“You’re not too shabby yourself, Admiral!” Ichimonji replied enthusiastically. “To be honest, I thought I was going to lose back there. Your groupings were pretty tight!” Putting her hands on her hips, she added, “I didn’t think old men in peaked caps could shoot like that!”

“I take offense to the last one,” Aikawa replied in mock indignation. Meanwhile, he momentarily turned to a nearby master chief, who understood his wordless order and immediately corralled the spectators back into the hangar deck, while two of the master chief’s subordinates policed up the spent brass and packed off the ensign’s submachine gun and the admiral’s own Type 89. Turning back to Ichimonji, he exclaimed, “Anyway, how about we get off this elevator and grab something to eat? Sounds good to you?”

The young witch pouted. “You’re forgetting our agreement, Admiral!” she huffed, crossing her arms in annoyance.
>>
>>40209302
Good thing we've got those new rifles, maybe we can call up the squadron. I imagine Ice, Slider and Wendy would be more than willing to smack a bitch.
>>
>>40209322

I think that's a bit of a leap. We don't really know what happened for this to go down yet.
>>
>>40209330
Aikawa chortled at the gesture, causing Ichimonji to pout even more. “Yes, yes, I didn’t forget your one gallon of ice cream,” he said, lightly pushing the witch off the carrier elevator. He glanced back one last time on the makeshift target platform—a rubber dinghy with the target pads set up on stools—as it was being pulled back to the ship. In his mind, he scolded himself for slacking off at the range; he was lucky he found his rhythm early. Still, he can’t get over the fact that he was beaten squarely by a 13-year-old witch using a submachine gun, without magic enhancements, and beyond the weapon’s effective range. “I won’t hear the end of this from the boys at the armory…”

“You said something, Admiral?” Ichimonji inquired, looking back on Aikawa who still had both hands on the witch’s shoulders as they entered the passageway leading to the wardroom.

“N-No, no, nothing, nothing,” the admiral replied distractedly. “I was just… thinking about the paperwork for your immediate return to the air, I guess. I didn’t forget the agreement, of course.” Even without hearing a response, Aikawa knew the ensign was happy at the news, as she now seemed to be skipping through the passageway. “Anyway, where is Ensign Kaede? Didn’t she come with you to watch?”

“Uh, no?” Ichimonji replied. “She went straight to the carrier’s library before the shooting started.” She then hummed a little ditty as they turned the last corner on the way to the ward room. Aikawa recognized the first few bars immediately—the Gunkan Koushinkyoku—and absentmindedly hummed along.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4viyTPzzzxI

The little witch made a beeline for the big table as soon as they entered the wardroom, leaving Aikawa standing at the hatch. Shaking his head, he turned to a nearby steward and listed off the witch’s order, before proceeding to the table. “You’re really excited about this, huh?”
>>
>>40209262
>SUCKED.” Tabitha finished for him. “No privacy, ever, especially when I needed some, you jerks would give me some sort of emergency to worry about. It was... especially bad near the end of our last cruise.”

Which cruise was that, it's been awhile
>>
>>40209325
"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughters go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will headpatyou."
>>
>>40209347
“Of course!” Ichimonji replied happily. “Who can say no to a gallon of triple chocolate and vanilla ice cream?”

The admiral can’t help but smile at that. Ichimonji was a kid, after all.

Seeing as it would take a while for the ice cream to arrive, Aikawa decided to chat. “You know, I still can’t believe you could use that submachine gun at that range. Are you sure you were not using witch enhancement back there?”

“Nuh-uh,” the witch puffed. “I learned that back at the academy! The instructors said I was a natural, but they also told me that I should move up to bigger weapons before my training’s over.”

“And yet you’re still using that old MP5,” Aikawa quipped. “It looks like it's gone beyond its operational life, even. Shouldn’t you drop—”

“NO,” Ichimonji interrupted. “No, no, no, no, no, no, no!” The witch was breathing heavily afterwards.

For a moment neither of them said anything. Ichimonji was still huffing, while Aikawa just sat there, feeling awkward.

Another few seconds pass before the white-haired witch took in one deep breath and calmed down. “I… I’m sorry Admiral, I think that was uncalled for,” Ichimonji said sheepishly. “It just… I can’t let go of this gun…”

“I see,” the admiral replied. “It must hold some meaning for you.”

“It was a friend’s gun…” Ichimonji said softly. “She used to be with me and Kaede back at the academy. A senior, actually. She taught us most of what we know now. She always said I was a natural with the MP5, so…”

“Seems like she’s really close to you two,” the admiral commented.
>>
>>40209322
No, I imagine that they trust Frank even more because he didn't betray them and try to take them back to the Colonel. And seeing as Katya tried to help them then I doubt that they would blame her.
>>
>>40209322
It's more likely they won't trust Anya again, what with her being fucking crazy and all.
>>
>>40209344
The adoption or Girl's trust?
>>
>>40209363
Ichimonji nodded in response. “Yep. She basically took care of us during our academy days. She helped us adjust to being in an academy with other witches when Kaede and I just came in from the orphanage... She was the one who helped the two of us get to know each other, being from different orphanages and all. She was basically our big sister back then. She even stood up for us when people bullied us.”

“So how is this friend of yours now?” the admiral inquired. “Since she’s your senior, she’s already on the front, right? What unit is she attached to?”

Ichimonji hesitated before answering. “She didn’t complete training, actually.” She looked away before continuing. “She… she was chosen for a special mission or something during training and… never came back. She left the MP5 with me, saying something about trusting me to keep it safe…”

If there’s one thing Aikawa did not receive training for back in his piloting days, it was handling a little girl that was THIS close to tears. He suddenly remembered the scene on the flight line a week ago, with the AWACS officer and the vice commander of the air group. Now the admiral wished he had an equally good retort to help him out of this mess…

Thankfully, help arrived in the form of the steward from earlier, carrying a tub filled with the ice cream. The admiral wondered how the little witch would finish such a large amount of sweets as he received the tub from the steward, who then immediately left.

Ichimonji’s mood immediately lightened up as soon as the ice cream tub touched the table. The formerly dark atmosphere finally lifted when the lid was taken off. The witch’s eyes grew wide as she finally saw what was inside: three layers of extra-creamy ice cream, with chocolate, vanilla, and super-condensed highland milk flavors, arranged in a wavy pattern.

>>
>>40209362

>>
>>40209379
“Well, that was the best we could come up with,” Aikawa said sheepishly. “We were pretty lucky we managed to stock any ice cream at all, what with the stepped-up offensives into North Korea and China going on…” the admiral saw that the little witch was rearing to get her hands on the tub. Shaking his head in amusement, he stated, “Go ahead, eat up. You deserve it.”

Ichimonji’s happiness went into overdrive almost immediately. “I’m diggin’ in!” In a flash she scooped up mouthfuls, making sure to get all three flavors at the same time. She caught herself however, and feeling embarrassed, she started eating slower, taking in each flavor a spoonful at a time.

Aikawa laughed at that, feeling rather amused at what the witch was doing. Ichimonji caught him however, and in a mocking tone she said, “I think the Admiral thinks I act like a child.” Holding the tub closer while waving her spoon in the air, she added. “Of course I’m not a child! I’m an adult! I can act like an adult if I wanted to you know!”

“Oho, is that so?” the admiral replied teasingly. “I wonder if you can listen to this though. It’s a song that only mature people listen to, after all!” With that, he went to a nearby music player, set it to PLAY, and instantly, the first few notes of a six-year old pop track came on the speakers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RjKv8J1y4U

Aikawa started tapping one of the speakers, also doing the occasional air drum. Ichimonji, meanwhile, was not impressed. “Admiral, that song was from an anime! How can you say it’s a song for mature listeners?”
>>
Adopting Anya is currently out of the question, given what she's in the middle of doing.

I fully expect the girls will be more favorably inclined towards Katya after this, since Anya knocked her the fuck out. Maybe she tried to prevent Anya from taking the girls?

>>40209258
Good run as always Ghost! Been awhile since we've had a cliffhanger like this.
>>
>>40209401
The admiral smirked, “It’s an anime for mature audiences, that’s what it is,” and continued tapping and air-drumming. He was genuinely enjoying the music though, as he hadn’t heard Casey Rankin in a pretty long time. He found the music somewhat fitting though; the line, “where are you going, when are you coming home?” reminded him of their current situation as soldiers, sailors, and airmen fighting to protect the empire, and how many of them went somewhere but may not be coming home.

He shook his head. That kind of thinking was reserved for undisciplined rookies. He may not be a model officer, but he sure as hell didn’t think like an amateur. He then glanced back at Ichimonji, still happily going through the ice cream which was now halfway gone. He reminded himself that no matter what happens he’ll get Ichimonji, Kaede, his niece Tamaki, and everybody else home.

Still, he can’t help but feel uneasy. It’s as if, even with a clear and obvious enemy in sight, there were still plenty more lurking around the corner. Maybe it was the relevant peace of their current AO. Quiet fronts can cause a lot of paranoia, after all.

Trying to distract himself, Aikawa thought back to Ichimonji’s outburst earlier. He hadn’t felt any kind of pressure like that in a while. Sure it was just a kid throwing a tantrum but, somehow the admiral felt some sort of very strong emotion. It wasn’t even like the kind of fear he felt back in the days when he would anger his wing-witches. Those days it felt pretty standard. With Ichimonji though, it was like… malice, a very strong hatred. Somehow, Sanada’s word rang back in his head. It was something about a ‘dark presence around the girls,’ or so he can remember.

Yet, looking at Ichimonji now dispelled all those thoughts.

“Undisciplined thinking again,” Aikawa muttered to himself.

He's a combat pilot who got handed the role, along with some others.
