You gently trace the vaguely baseball-shaped seams in the wall with a shaking claw, trying your very best to be strong even though you feel like your whole world is about to come apart. Save for two bedrolls and a restless dragon girl, your old cave is empty. Even the fire in the hearth seems small. Your mother had convinced you to wait till sunrise to set out, and honestly you should be asleep, but you couldn't bring yourself to rest. Something about this familiar corner calmed your heart, made things feel a bit more normal. A growling cough from the entrance to the cave reminded you otherwise, though, as your 'guard' cleared his throat. You whined lightly, and Djanna rose to move to your side, putting a clawed hand on your shoulder. You reached up with a paw of your own, covering hers. At least you weren't alone. That would have been more than you could take.

A scramble of activity at the mouth of the cave drew your attention and you saw Nikolai rise. Your mother stood in the entrance to the cavern, dressed in her usual apron and blouse but bearing a long stole hastily dyed crimson. You smell the pungent stench of winterberry even from here. "I would speak to my daughter." Your mother's eyes fell on Djanna, and she smiled sweetly. The fervor in her eyes was gone, but still she unsettled you. "Alone."

Djanna swallowed deeply, tightening her grip on your shoulder. She draws herself to her full height, only barely taller than your mother, and makes no move to leave you. Your mother simply waits, leaving enough room for the dragon to slip past her into the warren. The light of the bonfire casts eerie shadows around the entrance, making it look as though they're dancing wildly about her.

Welcome to RE: Kobold Quest

QM Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/lotuseater1031

Ask me Questions: http://ask.fm/Lotus_Eater

Character Sheet (Make Suggestions!): http://pastebin.com/4HUVEXh4

SYSTEMS:

Rolling: d100, best of three, roll under, degrees of success (roll compared to DC/opponent rolls and the amount by which you succeed/fail will matter). 1/100 are crit successes/fails, and override other rolls. A crit fail and success on the same roll means the remaining die result will be used.

Win/Lose by 10: Slight Success/Failure

10-20: Moderate Success/Failure

Greater than 20: Extreme Success/Failure

Voting/Writing: Ten minutes for voting, 20-40 minutes for writing as needed.

Final Destination: If a vote is tied/contended, I will call for FINAL DESTINATION, and present the most popular options. For those who don't know, you must vote precisely in the form of ">vote" without additional commentary. This extends 4chan's native post delay from one minute to five, and prevents samefagging or vote padding.

Exploration: While I have a general outline of what's going to happen, sometimes there are instances where things are left to chance. In those cases, I'll call for 1d10, and take the first given. Low rolls are beneficial encounters, with the higher you go being more dangerous. A result of 10 can actually be threatening to the character, and should be treated as such.

Combat: You will be called on to make both an offensive and defensive role, unless you choose FULL ASSAULT/DEFENSE.

Seriously, what the fuck happened with mom? She went from sort of anemic, depressed wolf to a full blown psychopath in less than an hour, and apparently took over a good chunk of the warren in the process.

>>
>>40200138
She was a religious zealot forced to keep her religion suppressed, until she saw her daughter be favored by her god, and took it as vindication of everything she had been preaching before she had been shouted down for as a murderous loony.

Don't forget that the warren she came from was full-on ISIS and was described as more monster than kobold.

Pretty much what >>40200274 said. Not to mention most of our "cousins" are actually brothers and sisters from previous litters with Us and Brother being the latest/last batch from Mom and Dad.

If Dad is out of commission it seems reasonable that kids would gravitate to their mother.
>>
>>40200274

With no background details to even hint at this sudden transition, yes, it feels pretty rushed. I've seen worse, of course.
>>
>>40200025
You give Djanna's hand a squeeze, and the dragon girl gives you an apprehensive look. You do your best to smile at her reassuringly. "Don't worry... I'll be fine." You're getting good at this 'deception' thing. She frowns slightly but steps away, moving to the mouth of the cave. Your mother catches her hand gently, causing the girl to jump like she'd been shocked. Eyszha leans in, whispering something in her ear. She nods, casts another look over her shoulder at you, and disappears into the cave with a flick of her tail.

Your mother crosses the floor of the cave to stand before you, an arm's-length away. You want to shout at her, demand answers, demand your mother back, but you manage to keep it all in for the moment. She whines a bit, her eyes moving to your tail and the set of your ears before returning to your eyes. Damn it, maybe you aren't as good at lying as you thought you were...

"Are you... all right, my love?" No! Of course you aren't all right! You're being strange, and everything is strange, and you're talking about moving everyone just before the cold season, and... and...

But no. No, Nadia, you have to be strong. You just nod, forcing your tail to relax and your ears to pop upright once more. Your mother eyes you critically for a moment before gesturing to the hearth. "Let's sit and talk for a bit. We will not see one-another again for some time, and I'm sure there are things you would like to know."

You nod quickly, moving to sit by the hearth cross-legged. Your mother returns to the cave entrance and whispers something to Nikolai, who practically barks "At once, Voice," before disappearing into the warrens.

They're calling her the Voice of Yra. It's not like it's hard to figure out. Even Nadia could probably put 2 and 2 together what with how she was screaming about how she speaks for Yra.

We should hug our mom.

Even if she has gone Zealous, it isn't without backing. The warrens are in trouble, Nadia IS blessed by Yra, the only real problem is that she went power hungry.
>>
>>40200493
I find people overreact a lot about this whole thing, she hasn't even done anything bad or particularly crazy beyond just having some renewed religious about her child, whcih she fought to keep alive despite being told its not gonna make it, literally doing divine miracles.
>>
What I want to know is why everyone is assuming she's flipped immediately into fuzzy Hitler. She saw her daughter perform LITERAL MIRACLES, get marked by the symbol of the god she used to worship, and almost lost her husband. She rather logically takes this as a sign that everyone should move to where she used to live when she used to worship that god so that nobody gets eaten by tar monsters. She still seems to care for Nadia given that her argument for keeping her from leaving was that she didn't want her very young daughter going out into the world alone. She hasn't done anything beyond some Southern Baptist preaching and the only person who really spoke ill of her is Baltas, and I get the distinct impression that those two have never gotten along.

Mom did nothing wrong.
>>
>>40200434

Well, you have been fast forwarding through the childhood at a somewhat breakneck pace. Having the transition of her into a full blown fanatic take a little longer than that very instant would be one thing you could have done. Other than that, showing her disturbing religious tendencies before hand in bedtime stories and the like, demonstrating that she has been building this into our siblings, maybe hinting that there was a bit of unrest in the warrens, enough support for her sudden rise to work out over a week, all of those small details help smooth the eventual transition.

As is, all I really got out of mom's character is that she was sickly, and maybe minorly religious, but not really more so than anyone else. This sudden snap transition feels unnatural because of that.
>>
>>40200493
She's 100% right except for the part where she's being a bit of a dick about it. I'd say that Nadia's reaction is bullshit if she wasn't a reincarnation. As it is now, I'm just assuming that bits of modern day sensibilities are leaking through and coloring her perception of events.
>>
>>40200570
You are correct, good sir. But 4chan can not into religion. To many fedoras in the crowd.
>>
>>40200564
>>40200570
I'm going to laugh at you two when we eventually get back and we see the dead and rotting corpses of our dad, Uncle Baltas and Sylea hanging
>>
>>40200598
You're sort of ignoring the parts where she tried to talk about religion and all of our relatives, especially dad, got nervous and snappy as fuck.

I'll admit it wasn't a substantial buildup and it was too subtle for how quick things went, but it was there.
>>
>>40200612
They probably died because they insisted on livingin a dark cave full of flesh eating slime monster.
>>
>>40200570

Listen, the reason her actions are concerning is because now there are "guards" everywhere, with weapons that they have made clear that they will use on other warren members if they speak out against The Voice. She has turned her home into a military state, threatened to attack and make the dragons pay dearly (ie. probably kill our adoptive, injured aunt) if things don't play out to her expectations. She hasn't done anything, and what she proposes is for the good, but it's clear that she'll take overly aggressive, dangerous means to achieve it.
>>
Question time is closed, otherwise I'll be working all night on a single post. Writing.
>>
>>40200570

Its not what she has done, so much as what she has threatened to do.
>>
>>40200647

Like I said, there were some hints, just maybe not enough. If he considers leading details a bit more for next time, I think the story will flow better at the next sudden transition.
>>
>>40200671
They are under siege by tar slimes, its kinda logical there would be guards around.
The worst that can be said about her is not taking no for a answer from the people who refuse toleave the warren, these people are delusional idiots because the warren is about to be overrrun by tar monster. I kinda agree with her not letting them die on their own stupidity.
>>
>>40200713
>>40200671
>Dragon child wants to drag your Miracle worker daughter out into the Cold, Harsh world even though both of them are only weeks old and know nothing of the horrors out there.
>Away from her loving mother, father, and cousins
>Have her mother as leverage to make sure that the dragon one day comes back with your blessed baby

Yep, she sure is evil for doing what people have since the dawn of time. Leveraging a situation.
>>
>>40200671
Which, with everyone threatened with death by horrible slime monster unless something is done quickly is a logical step. Yeah, she's gone kinda militant but thing have gotten exceedingly real and she seems to be trying to keep everyone safe. I'm just saying not to assume she's gonna start offing people for funsies.
>>
Have you guys forgotten the bit where uncle baltas explained that her old tribe would put people to death if they believed something even slightly different?
>>
>>40200749

Most people don't leverage with violence. also it was dad's idea, dragon child volunteered to go with us to help protect us.
our mother then said, if she didnt come back her mother would pay.
>>
>>40200671
She only threatened her because she worried about her little daughter being dragged away into danger, thats perfectly understandable. She has neither done nor said anything actually bad sofar. At all.
>>
>>40200768
I believe they have, Also let's not forget that we were going to get attacked by one of the fanatics for saying something to "Voice"
>>
>>40200768
And I'm pretty sure she was gonna off Baltas.
>>
>>40200768
How does that matter cknsidering she left that tribe and has not put people to death so trying to blame her for shit other people di, based on the biased account of someone who doesn't like her, is not a good argument.
>>
>>40200796
>Implying he'd stick around

>attacked no, cuffed for being an uncomfortable child, yes
Uh no, The person was going to attack us with a weapon til Mom stepped in
>>
>>40200817
Except if memory serves it was with club in hand.
>>
>>40200809
Have you missed all the subtle little hints? she was more than a little threatening when asking us about baltas.
>>
>>40200768
Even assuming Baltas wasn't exegerrating, how does them doing that mean she will do it?
>>
>>40200768
I figure he's not being entirely accurate. It seems that those two just don't like each other.

>>40200779
Oh no a mother threatened that harm would befall someone if their child didn't return safe! This has never happened before!
>>
>>40200782

She literally said, that the dragons would pay dearly is her daughter was not brought back. She threatened a practically new born's injured mother (someone known to be a friend to their family and practical god mother to her child) with torture as a means of ensuring obedience.

That's not to mention that Papa is freaking the hell out about the "guards" who are listening to his every conversation and have been made very clear as willing and ready to levy physical force against him or even the prodigal child herself if they act out of turn.

This is a fucked up situation, and rather irrational behavior. It's not the actions of a concerned mother. It's the actions of someone with sociopathic religious fervor given fuel to light a fire.
>>
>>40200833
Because she was mad at him, going from that to "she will brutally murder him any moment now" is a bit hysterical.
>>
>>40200809
She didn't leave for religion she left cause she had the hots for dad. Baltas and dad said she still had her religious crazy. Her guards are secret police listening in on every one, anyone against her gets attacked and probably burned at the stake . She's gone full zealot. She's threatening friends and allies with death over things they can't really control.
>>
>>40200824
>>40200826

so because they didnt drop the club, they were going to use it? they have two hands anons. one can be used to whack a child. unless I'm remembering wrong and they were actually raising the weapon to hit us. In which case mom is using psychopaths.
>>
>>40200896
Yes they were going to hit us with the club
>>
EVEN IF the anons talking about blood and murder are overestimating, so are those of you saying everything will be fine, maybe things wont get hitler bad, but this is NOT a good situation right now, underplaying it is just as bad as overplaying it.
>>
>>40200334
You're doing your best to keep calm, but even now you can't help it. You feel the beast between your jaws rise with a mighty fury, and-

No. You clamp your jaws down, and con-OW DAMN IT FUCK!

You whine and yelp, and your mom is on you in a heartbeat, gathering you into her arms and whimpering. Your tongue hurts like crazy, throbbing and you're pretty sure you taste blood. She presses her fingers gently to your cheeks, frowning. "Let me see..." Childish programming, or a desire to return to some semblance of normality, make you open your mouth and she tutts softly. "Careless child..." she whispers with worry and affection, reaching to her waist and pulling a small skin from a thong at her belt. She pulls out the stopper and hands it to you. "Rinse and spit. It will burn, but it will keep the tongue clean." You hesitate just enough to elicit a soft growl from her, but you oblige, taking a pull from the skin and oh gods and demons, that's beyond foul. You move to spit it out immediately, but your mother puts her hand to your lips. "Rinse, child!" You whine, but oblige, and when you spit it into the hearth, the flames flare up, the light banishing the shadows in the cave even if momentarily. Your tongue is numb, and your mouth burns a bit, as your mother takes the skin back.

"What... why are they calling you Voice?" you cough, sitting back down and looking at your mother with the rapt attention of a curious cub. Your mother settles across from you, back rigid and tail curled about her hips.

"Because that is what I am, Nadia. I am the voice of the gods. I speak their will to those who will listen."

"But you're mama..." you flatten your ears in confusion. Your mother laughs softly.

"Can I not be both? A miner may be a father, or may be a brewer, or a stoneworker. One thing may be many things, each important." Her tail thumps lightly against the cave floor in amusement. You sort of understand, but you wish she could just be mama...
>>
>>40200858
Dude, you are the one going full crazy mode right now. You take a few agressive words and take it to mean she is going burn people at stakes.

Seriously, take deepbreath for a moment, take off your fedora and maybe you will realise her actions are completly understandable considering the very intense danger her family and waren is, and considering until she started with this thing they were completly willing to just die to tar monsters because they were too stubborn to leave.

Oh wow she got agressive when faced with her child being send into danger for no good reason, never happened before.
>>
>>40200910
Oh she's definitely gone full dictator, I'm just saying that it's for the purpose of keeping everyone from getting eaten and not because she's a power hungry psychopath all of a sudden because religion bad!

No one is saying she isn'z a bit over the top, its just a ridiculous exegeration to start talking about furry hitlers and burning people. She is just trying to get people out of a shitty situation and got a bit swept up in the excitement of it all, what with her child which she desperatly kept alive turning out to be a confirmation of her religious believes that everyone around her supressed for years on threatof driving her out into death of freezing and starvation.

"And... and what about papa? And uncle Baltas? And Sylea? Why'd Djanna get scared when you said... um... 'they'd pay for their negliges...'" Your mother tilts her head curiously, then shakes her head with a sigh.

"'Transgressions,' my sunlight." You whine. No! It's snowflake...

"That! It sounded like you were gonna hurt her." Your tail curls into your lap, your ears flat as can be against your head.

"I don't want to. I am fond of Sylea, and her daughter. She is an old, dear friend to your father and your uncle, and thus to me. But!" There it is. There's that fire you don't like. You whine, and she clears her throat, spitting into the flame. "You are more precious to me. Her daughter is young, and timid. I did not want her to take the duties she adopted lightly."

You consider this for a moment. You think there's something you're not being told, but you can't quite tell what. You open and close your mouth a few times, trying to choose the right words, but in the end curiosity outweighs tact. "What did you say to Djanna?"

"Oh. Her mother passed a message to her guard. Said she would like to see her daughter before she departed in the morning. Did you think it was something worrisome?" Yes...

"You..." You whisper. You're afraid to ask, more because you know she'll be honest than because you fear retribution. "You aren't gonna hurt anyone, right?" Tears gather in the corners of your eyes. Your mother does not immediately reach out for you. There's a momentary hesitation before she gathers you into her arms, holding you close to her and pressing your cheek to her chest. Thu-thump... thu-thump... you know that heartbeat. Before you were born, you heard it, became intimately familiar with it. Your mother, the person who gave you life. She would never do anything bad... right?

"I do not want to, love. They are all my kin... my family. They are more dear to me than the sun and the wind and the beating of my heart. But, you and your father are more so." You nuzzle against her, but there's something about the way she says that you're not sure you like. You whimper and she runs her fingers through your hair. "These caves are not safe. I have never liked them, and now the darkness has come to do us harm. There are those who do not want to come above with us, and want to stay below. I worry they may not be made to hear wisdom. If I must bring them above forcefully..."

You consider what she said for a moment, then frown, pulling back away from her. She lets you go, but keeps her hands on your arms, her eyes on yours. "Why are you being so mean?"

Your mother looks as if you'd cuffed her, eyes wide and mouth hanging open in shock. She looks for a moment as though she might cry, and you can't shrink down any further no matter how much you're trying. You whisper apologies as you tremble, looking every which way but at her. She finally, in a tremulous voice, speaks.

"I know you're only a cub, Nadia, and it must seem like I'm being monstrous... but think about things for a moment. There are terrible things down here in the dark. There are slimes, and horrible things in the flowstone, and who knows what else might come for us? The people of the city know where we are. If they decide they don't want to trade for our ore any longer... if they want it all for themselves... there are a lot of things in this world that threaten us. Better we not stay where we are trapped, right? But our kin don't like to listen to wisdom. There is the way things have been done, and only that. To make a new cave, you must carve out the old. Do you understand?"

Honestly, I'm shocked all to Hell and back the game lasted beyond thread one, given my track record with keeping things going. Can we, like, try to pray to Yra and ask if he's actually talking to mama or not?

"Well... I guess... but isn't there a nicer way to do it?" You curl up against your mother, nuzzling into the crook of her arm. You aren't such a small pup any more that you can crawl into her lap, but you can still cuddle up with her, arms around her. She puts her own arm around your shoulders, her tail around your waist. You're a bit more at ease, but still not completely so. Your mother whines affectionately, nuzzling your ear.

"You are a kind child. Too kind for this world, I think sometimes. But, I had tried. I have never liked this place. It smelled wrong to me." Huh? It never smelled bad to you... "The family has lived here for a long, long time. The Uncles do not want to move, and the Aunts will stay with their mates... the cousins with their parents, and so the rest of the family with them. We are not so strong a people that Uvu takes many of us. What lies beyond these caves would make swift work of us, a snack at most." You shudder, thinking back to your first meeting with Sylea, and the horrible images that flashed through your mind when you imagined her eating you. "Best we stay together, and when the many of us expect to stay together in one place..."

You nod, sort of understanding, you think? You'd never thought about the family being anything but family, or home behing anything but home. All of this was, frankly, making your head hurt. "And what about the ones who want to stay? Can't th-"

"Out of the question!" She barks quickly, and you flinch away from her. She whimpers softly and nuzzles at you again. "Sorry... sorry, my light, sorry." Snowflake! "But I will not let my kin's stubborn stupidity and wrong-thinking lead to their harm. It will not do for even one of them to be harmed."

>>40201430

"I promise, mama, but... why before the cold season? Is something gonna happen then?"

She smiled and laid her hand on your head, smoothing your hair lightly. "Well, my light-"

You growl softly in your throat, high-pitched and with more than a bit of a whine. "Snowflake! I don't like being called 'light' or 'sunbeam' or... or..." Your tail shoots straight out behind you in frustration, and your mother sighs softly and holds you close with her arm.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry... I didn't realize you felt so strongly about it. Of course you are my little snowflake as well as my light... precious, unique, no other like you, but burning with so much energy..." You're not quite sure how to feel about that description, but hearing the old familiar name takes the kink out of your tail, at least, and you settle back against her as she smoothes your hair. You sit together in silence for a moment, a branch cracking in the hearth. You find your voice, and clear your throat.

"You really just wanna help the family?" Your mother makes a noise of assent in her throat and nods.
>>
>>40201809
"When... when I glowed... all I wanted was to protect Sylea and Djanna, an' when I healed Papa, I just wanted to help him. That's all I could think about; how I didn't want them to be sad, or hurt. I think... I think the family getting hurt would make Yra sad. I know it'd make me sad..." You hunch over beside your mother, and the older kobold whines and turns, putting her other arm around you and hugging you tight. You feel tears in your eyes and you bury your face in her chest, clinging to her tightly.

"Yra is not all flame and fury, you know, love. What does the light do?"

You say nothing, but your ears twitch in curiosity. Your mother nuzzles against the top of your head. "Light keeps the dark away. The bad things that live in shadow, people who do wicked things, everything that is bad in the world is repelled by Yra. He is not just an avenger, but a protector. I think that is why he loves you as I do. You were faced with horrible creatures, and instead of running or being afraid, you fought to protect a mother and her child. You are a little hero, my tiny l- snowflake."

Your tail becomes a living thing, slapping against the floor, and the bedrolls, and your mother, and the your mother again, and the hearth, and the- wow, you really can't control this thing. You feel color rising in your cheeks, your ears twitching as you press your face into your mother's shoulder, whispering about how you're totally not a hero, and you didn't do anything special. You practically bounce up and down in your seat at your mother's praise, though, and your grip around her chest tightens as she laughs.

"My my... I never thought I would see you bashful..." Has her blouse caught fire? Because you're pretty sure the heat in your cheeks could set cloth alight by this point. A sudden thought crosses your mind and you pull back, practically leaping to your feet and bouncing in place.

"..does that mean I can do cool things and help people 'n stuff? Do I hafta start telling stories about me? I'm not good at telling stories yet..." you clench your fists tightly in front of you, bent forward and looking at your mother with a mix of apprehension and sheer, unbridled excitement. She laughs loudly despite herself, and from the mouth of the cave you hear another, deeper chuckle. You balk and look, seeing Nikolai seated where he had been before your mother came in, a basket beside him. Okay, no, you indeed cannot vanish on the spot, although you did try your absolute best. Your mother rises and takes your paws in hers with a grin.

"Nadia, my love... you will help your family, and keep them safe. Worry little for the others outside the warrens... and your stories will live with us for years and years to come. Nikolai, the basket!" The uncle nods and rises, carrying it in and offering it to your mother. She takes it without another word to him, waving a paw dismissively, and he returns to his post. You wag your tail curiously, peeking over the top of the vessel. Inside is a small pile of gilt and crimson, the golden threads shining in the firelight.
>>
>>40202173
You wag your tail as your mother sets the basket down, lifting it out. "I had worried that I had lost this. When we were moving to the high cave, I found the bundles I had brought with me from my home, and thankfully it was lost no more."

She gives it a shake with a flourish, and a heavy coat with broad sleeves hangs before her, tall as your mother and just a bit taller than you. Gold buttons run the length of the breast, with the bottom half hanging open. She looks at it for a long moment with a sigh before passing it to you. You take it in both hands, a moment of confusion before dawning realization comes upon you. You whisper "For me?"

Your mother nods. "The cold times are coming, and our fur is thick but not in all the places it could be. You will need this, I think. I wore it when I came to these warrens with your father, so many years ago."

It's so pretty... you shake your head quickly, but your tail wags a lot more vigorously. "I... I can't... it..." Your tail has begun to move your hips about left and right, the wag moving through you. Your hands shake with excitement, and you just can't bring yourself to refuse the gift. A smile begins to take over your face, your eyes sparkling as your ears twitch about. What's making that excited yipping noise? Oh... well, that's embarassing.

You throw the coat over your arms, the long tails falling neatly around your tail and legs. The arms seem too loose, but with your paws shoved through the cuffs, they stay in place for the most part. "I love it! Thank you thank you thank you!" You throw your arms around your mother, practically levitating in place between your excitement and the motion of your tail. Again, you're reminded of video games, but you're not quite sure why. Your mother laughs, infected by your happiness, and pulls you off her with a kiss to your brow. She sets about showing you how all the little straps and buckles work, cinching it up around your upper arms, and tightening it about your chest and waist so that it holds close to you. It feels tight, somewhat restricting, but very warm. Almost like you're wearing a blanket. With a blush, you realize it's the first piece of clothing you'd ever worn... well, in this life... and the first thing you've ever owned all your own. Your heart is pounding fit to burst from your chest as you wriggle about under your mother's attention. She pulls something else from the basket that catches the light, and holds it up for you. You look at it and wow, there's another kobold in there! Oh... oh, wow. No, you're just really dumb. Like, really.

You gingerly reach out and take the simple square of polished silver, staring transfixed at your own reflection before you hold it out at arm's length, angling it so you can get a full look at yourself in the coat. The bright crimson and gold shines like flame in the silver, and your white-gold fur caps it giving your tall, skinny body the appearance of a bonfire. You whine a little, not quite sure how to feel about the comparison, before your mother takes the mirror back. "You are lovely, Nadia. Like a winter rose."

You open your mouth to object, but she shakes her head, setting the mirror aside and pulling a pair of leather trousers from the basket. These are new, well-oiled, and stitched tightly with strong thread. Next, a wool blouse, all insurance against the cold. For the first time, it really strikes home: You'll be leaving. You'll be away from your family. For a moment, you want to come clean, to tell her you lied about the pilgrimage, but something stops you. What if she reacted poorly? Took it out on papa? Or Baltas? You were so caught up in the moment that you forgot. You whine, your tail drooping. Your mother tilts her head. "What is it?"

"I'm scared..." you whisper, twisting your fingers in the cuffs of the coat. "I'll miss everyone, and it's the first time I'll have been away from home, and... and..." Your mother lays a hand on your head, then moves it to your shoulder. You look up at her and she's not smiling. She looks at you with a serious expression, and you suck in a breath.

"Nadia, listen to me. You are... you are a pup. My pup. You are young for this journey, but if Yra has willed it, you must do it. There is a reason, and it is not to us to know just why. You will have Djanna with you, and while she's young, she's a dragon. She is strong, and will help keep you safe. This journey will be good for both of you, and when you return, you will be able to live the rest of your days surrounded by family. We will welcome you with open arms, our returning light." She kisses your brow softly, but as you reach out to hug her, she slips away with a shake of her head. You whine softly, but look down at your feet. She reaches into the pocket of her apron and pulls something from it, suspended on a leather strap. It's a small amber pendant, with a strange symbol etched on it. It looks messy, like somebody scratched something into it, then scratched something else over top of it.

"What's that?" you ask despite yourself as she steps forward, binding it about your neck and slipping it under the neckline of your blouse. Your mother lays her hand over it, feeling your heart beat.

"This is our mating talisman, your father and I." You tilt your head curiously, and your mother blushes and folds her ears back. Huh... weird. Why's she acting like a cub? "When we were bound, before we came here, my old warren had a tradition. We had marks, each of us. Like symbols for our names. When your father and I were mated, our shaman scratched his mark over mine on this piece of amber, and it was meant to bind us forever. I want you to carry it with you, so that you always have us both close to your heart."
>>
>>40203552
You feel tears rise in your eyes, your breath hitch in your throat, and this time your mother lets you embrace her.

======================

You wave, your mother and father standing before the cave, flanked by a majority of your cousins, Sylea, and Baltas. Your mother watches stoically, your father's paw upraised with the palm facing behind him - a gesture of farewell, but calling you back as well. Baltas stands with his arms crossed, eyes narrowed in the morning light. You feel the weight of the dagger he'd forced on you against your hip, hanging from the heavy leather belt that Sylea had given you, as well as the weight of the pack against your back. Djanna sniffles in the cold, but you think the weather has nothing at all to do with it as she waves vigorously to her mother. The elder dragon simply leans on her crutch, face impassive, though you think you catch the barest quiver in the dragon's lip. The cousins call blessings out to you, encouragement for your journey, or playful chides which elicit laughter from the others. You don't see your brother among them. You question it for a moment, but it wasn't as though you were terribly close to one-another. Finally, you round a bend in the "road" - really, just a foot trail less snowbound than the rest of the hills - and the mouth of the cavern is out of sight. You sigh and lower your arm, steeling your heart. Djanna sniffles again, burrowing deeper into the simple leather jacket she wore, steam rising from her hands where they hang at her sides.

"So... w-where to now, Nadia?"

>North, to the forest. There is a shrine deep in the woods, and that tower looked kind of interesting.

"North, I suppose. We should at least look at these shrines, and... honestly, I don't know where else to go..." Djanna nods, more than content to follow your lead for now, as you both set off along the path wending its way through the hills. As morning winds on to noon, you're almost overwhelmed by everything around you. The sun is bright overhead, more than any of the lanterns, the bonfire, the flowstone, the little chips of bright lights in the stone, any of it! And all the clear blue above, well, comparing it to a cup of water doesn't do it any kind of justice. It goes on forever, bright and pure and clear! And the breeze... even if it makes you shiver from the chill, you'd never felt the wind through your hair before, and with each gust you can't help but laugh as it tickles you. Djanna calls after you as you dash ahead, plowing through a snowbank just for the joy of it, sending the wet whiteness scattering and-

Something darts from the bank as you plow through, and your ears and tail immediately perk up as the little thing dashes away from you. You don't know why, but...

Djanna calls out for you to come back, but you don't listen as you cackle maniacally, taking off after your prey immediately. Your oversized paws work as snowshoes, giving you traction and power through the compact white blanket. The dark blur picks up speed, squeaking in fright as you gain on it. Hah, you wish! You're mine! Mine! You lunge and dive, grabbing ahold of it and rolling through the snow as the little creature struggled in your arms. You hold it aloft, laughing joyously at the glee of the hunt. You breathe heavily, your heart pounding, as you take a look at your prize. It's a fat black creature, heavily furred but for a long white stripe running the length of it from its nose down it's back and along it's long, bushy tail. Wait a minute... black fur, white stripe, curly tail... didn't uncle Baltas tell you a story about these things once?

You hear Djanna shout out to you as the thing in your hands hisses, raising its tail aloft just as Djanna runs up to you, her claws sinking into the snow up to mid-calf.

You look the thing in it's eyes as Djanna runs up to you. It glares murder at you and its whole body clenches. Huh, now what did Baltas tell you abOH GOD! You quickly turn your back on your companion, aiming the beast away as a spray of oily fluid flies from it's backside, the acrid, burning stench making your nose spasm and your tongue flop out of your mouth as you start gagging. Djanna stops short of you, leaning forward with her hands on her hips and panting. "You... don't just run off... like that. I was worried... what is that?"

The black squirrel hisses loudly, renewing its struggles and swiping at you with a fury something so small shouldn't have. It glares at you, as if daring you to take a swing, and sprays another stream from its backside, though this one's smaller and with less distance. Oh good god, you feel like you're going to vomit and you haven't eaten breakfast yet! You look back at Djanna, confused. You know, you really wanted to chase this thing when it took off. Now... what the hell do you do with it? The dragon girl looks at you, then to the creature, with a shake of her head. She holds out a clawed hand for it. "Give it here. I'll take care of it." You nod and oblige, passing it over to her. She takes it by the scruff of the neck and gives it a heave!
>>
>>40204948
"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeee-" THUMP! The creature lands yards away in a snow bank, stunned. Slowly it regains its feet and shakes the snow from its fur. It hisses at you, turning it's back and trying to spray another stream of the stinky fluid. Luckily, it seems to be all but dry, and after it realizes this it scurries off. Your heart leaps and you move to give chase again, but Djanna grabs you by the shoulder, just shaking her head. You whine, looking back to where the creature vanished amongst the snowbanks, and reluctantly return to the road. Luckily, none of the stench clings to either of you, and you walk on till noon when you stop in the lee of a hill, breaking to share a quick lunch. While you eat, Djanna pulls out a scroll and unrolls it in her lap, looking over it carefully, before holding her arm upright and looking at her shadow.

Chewing on a piece of dried meat, you flop down beside Djanna, leaning against her and making the dragon girl squeak in surprise. You lay your head on her shoulder, looking up at her as your tail thumped against the ground, swishing through the dry, dead grass. "Whatcha doooooooin?" you ask, blinking cutely at your friend. She clears her throat and nods down at the scroll. You look down to see a lot of shapes you don't recognize, arranged within a bigger shape, and more of those words you can't read. You really, really ought to have someone teach you how someday.

"Just trying to keep track of where we are. My mom gave me this yesterday, and taught me how to keep track of our direction. That's why the..." She raised her hand again, the tips of her fingers moving into the sunlight and casting a shadow at the base of the hill, which she pointed out with her free hand. "I'm not sure exactly how it works, but given the way the sun moves, I can use it, and my shadow, and kind of tell which way we're going. Since we're moving north-" she points toward the forest in the near distance "-and given how fast we're moving, not counting distractions..." she frowns. You smile, but your ears fold back sheepishly. "...we should reach the forest by mid-afternoon or early evening."
>>
>>40205297
You nod, taking another bite of your meat. You didn't understand any of that, but somehow - from another life - you don't quite think her explanation makes sense. Still, maybe it's something about dragons. Maybe they have some kind of innate sense of direction. Who knows? You shrug and stand, stretching out your arms and legs, and walk to the base of the hill. Now, it's Djanna's turn to be curious, as you fold your hands behind your head and set about bending your knees over and over. "What are you doing?"

"Squats."

"Ew. Could you at least go behind the hill for that?" She wrinkles her nose. You tilt your head in confusion, then laugh, not breaking stride at all.

"Not like that kind of squat! Exercise!"

"Wha? What's that?" Djanna's tail slaps the ground, her head tilting curiously. Oh, boy! Somebody who's actually curious!?

You grin ear to ear, and Djanna looks worried. Still, when you beckon to her, she packs her map away and comes down, and you help her get into the right form. "It's like what we were doing when we were fighting, except you do it on your own, and it's like... making your body better."

"Better how?" She seems unsure, but more than willing to follow along. You are the older sister, after all, even if you are shorter than she is. You move across from her so you're facing one-another and resume your form, showing her how to move through the motions. You have to stop and correct her time to time as you go, but soon enough she's moving slowly through proper squats one after another.

"Stronger, faster... like learning to fight, we got better at it, right? Well, this is like... making your body used to doing stuff. Like, when you were a baby, you couldn't pick up a lot, right? But now I bet if I asked you to, you could pick up that log at the top of the hill." She nods, still looking unsure, as she's beginning to whine whereas you're picking up speed as you get excited. "Well, if you keep doing this, maybe you could pick up better than a log! Maybe a big rock! Or a whole cow! Or a car!"

"A... what?"

Huh... good question. You shake your head, and she lets it go, finally falling over spent into the grass, rubbing her thighs with a whimper. "I don't think I like this. It hurts!"

"Well, it does at first, but it hurts less the more you go! That's when you really have to step it up!" You drop to the ground, landing on your hands, keeping your body from slamming down into the dirt, and start doing push-ups like a girl possessed. "Come on, time to work the arms now! No slouching! We're on our own now, we have to be strong and there's only one way to do that!"
>>
>>40205914
Djanna whimpers, looking at you like you've lost your god-damned mind, but obliges. Eventually, you're back on the road, shivering in the air but feeling a pleasant burn in your limbs. The dragon limps along behind you, whining with each motion and pulling her jacket tighter about her as the wind picks up. She doesn't seem to handle the cold as well as you do, and you wonder about getting her something heavier to wear. You put that to the back of your mind, where it's likely to be promptly lost, but still! The day begins winding to a close, and you find yourself at the edge of the woods. Above, you hear the raucous calling of birds, and through the underbrush a few smaller animals skulk and scurry about, fleeing as you approach. From deeper in, you hear a low, hooting growl that you don't recognize, and it makes your tail curl about your leg momentarily in fear. It's deep and dark, but after the day spent in the sun, and the running, and the exercise, you feel like you could conquer the world! You stand tall as Djanna finally comes to your side, tightening her grip on the mouth of her pack, carried over her shoulder. You look about quickly, ready to barge in immediately before a yawn catches you off guard.

"I think maybe we should find a place to sleep for tonight. I'm tired, and you don't look too lively yourself." Huh, but you feel-
>>
>>40205938
You wake cuddled against Djanna, the dragon having fallen asleep sitting slantwise against a tree with your head in her lap. The crackling remains of a banked fire burn a few feet away, and a heavy blanket is awkwardly pulled across both of you, wrapped around your small body and her shoulders. You hear soft growls in the middle distance, and here and there see yellow orbs reflecting the light. Eyes in the dark, though you're momentarily reminded of the slimes. You shift and the dragon girl lays her arm over your shoulder, murmuring in her sleep as she applies her weight to you, trying even in slumber to keep you out of trouble. You huff, pouting, as you settle in and try to return to sleep. You shift against her, looking upward and oh wow...

Hanging above, in the distance, you see the stars for the first time in your young life. Brilliant dots of silver-white light hang in the firmament, making patterns in the darkness, and despite itself your tail thumps against the ground, dislodging the blanket and letting the cold in against your legs. Between them is a large dark spot, and you feel something should be there. Something precious to you. You sniff deeply, all the odors of the outside world lulling you back into a quiet state of mind, and you let out a soft sort of howl under your breath. The creatures drawing nearer you in the dark recoil and scurry away as Djanna stirs at the noise. Contented and happy, you bury your face in your half-sister's stomach and slip back into sleep.

Forest adventures next time, anons! Thanks for playing! I'll be around a bit for questions/comments/concerns after I'm done getting ready.

>but you haven't done all that much just yet.
Jesus christ, I figured each of those slime kills would have netted us 30 levels each considering disparity in power/danger for small kobold doing it.
>>
>>40206441
So how do levels work in RE canon? Is it like Disgaea where they don't matter all that much overall?
>>
>>40206489
Nope only matter when you hit 100 and evos are kinda janky. Basically at around level 3 or 3rd form most monsters are more or less even, at 4 they get terrifyingly strong, 5 are physical gods and the mythic 6 form is true dietydom. The most successful monsters usually don't pass 4.
>>
>>40206489

Levels in REQM's game are an indication of progress to the next evolution. 100 levels produces an automatic transition to the next level of evolution which can have special templates added on for being blessed of this and that, or having done something significant to affect your transition.

Snake Quest used a system where you "evolved" at 100, but gained traits steadily along the way to a major evolution.
>>
>>40206489
From other quests, and the original, more powerful enemies give more levels. If a weak monster beats one that's more powerful than then they'd gain more levels from it than if a stronger one had beaten it.

If you're able to hit above your weight class you would level up more quickly to reach the reach the next evolution.
>>
>>40206560
>>40206489

Usually, lower tier evolutions take less time to manifest, and higher risks yield higher rewards. The exact rates of evolution are dictated by the QMs, but generally, the first evolutions tend to happen fairly early, with subsequent evolutions becoming progressively more difficult to obtain.

TL;DR There is no fixed rate at which the MC should level, but whatever rate of progression you are planning on, it would pay to make the audience privy to it.
>>
>>40206763
All right, updated the sheet. Went ahead and multiplied the levels by 10, per suggestion, and decided to add in what "buffs" the levels are moving you toward.
