With a rather sizable amount of gryphon for food, you're on your way back to the caravan, friends once more riding behind you.

Jin and Sheszka are sleeping still, their new nocturnal jobs still taking their toll- But Nin is up and moving now, feet tapping idly behind you, a little sort of dancing tune played by feet across your back.

Your armour is a bit of a mess, stowed behind you, a fresh shirt pulled on behind a curtain of your friends white and gold wings- You'll repair it when you have time. Probably tonight.

Mostly, you're vaguely irritated that you need to repair it- you're certainly not your mother, but you've grown to have a rather high opinion of your own abilities.
Maybe it's time to check your ego.

You sigh, scratching gently behind your ear, hair clumping with sweat and dirt from the road. And probably monster blood, too.

You take account- scrapes and scratches, some heavily bruised ribs- just enough that breathing to far hurts. Or touching them at all. You can beg a bit of healing dust later, you hope.
Or more likely, you'll be assuring her that it isn't as bad as it looks as she takes care of you.

You drag the loose strands of hair around you, tucking them behind your ears, trotting back to the sound of horses and wagons and voices.

>Get back to the caravan so you can take it easy.
>Scout a bit- You're not the vanguard today, but you can do some work all the same.
>Break and bandage everyone, then travel. A bit of extra time is worth it.

Georg bitches and moans about his bag- and the fact that he is probably something approaching 35% gryphon with the sheer amount of blood on him.
Eiryn, on the other hand, is comically easy to convince- Maybe it's just the paladin nature? Oaths and protection and serving the light and so on-

In any case, you wrangle them into a bit of scouting easily enough.

Though it turns out that the one you actually needed to convince was Nin.

"-Absolutely not."

You blink in surprise.
"What? Why not, yes?"
Nin's tone is steel, final. "'Why not, yes?' Because you are more bruise than spider? You armour is broken. What happens if you get in a fight?"

You shake your head.
"It is just scouting. Looking, not fighting."
She growls frustration.
"I- Nnn. Fine. Shirt up."

And now it is your time to be confused.
"Hah?"
She prods your back.
"Pull your shirt up, so I can look at your wound."
"It is just a-"

"Pull it up."
You give up.

With your shirt dragged up just beneath your breasts, you're suddenly incredibly grateful that your sister made you underwear. Not that it stops you from ordering your two companions to face forwards and march.

Nin works from her collection of silk bandages, carefully, gently rubbing powder into the purple splotch that your entire side consists of.
Of course, gently and painless are worlds apart.

Your legs feel like rubber, shaking and making your stride a mess- You're fairly certain if you didn't have eight you'd be on the ground. And when she tightens the bandages, it feels like ice and fire all at once, driving the breath from your lungs and bringing tears to your eyes.

"Does it need to be-"
"Yes! Okay! Yes."

You turn your head, the moth red-eyed, lips pursed behind you.
"Nin? Are you okay?"
"You are- You are an idiot. And you are not allowed to get hurt. So stop it."

You feel sheepish and worried all at once, your voice contrite and genuine as you speak, "I am sorry, yes."
"Just- Don't do it again."
"Mm."
>>
>>40183811
>>40183828

I'm imaging the Caravan trying to comfort a crying spider over the loss of her SkullButt
>>
>>40183858
She pulls your shirt down, the tunic covering you once more, and stands on your back to give you a careful hug- as far from your side as she can.

You walk like that for a while until the other adventurers call you up.

"Yes?"

Eiryn scuffs the ground with an armoured foot, kicking ash and burned logs. Georg speaks up.
"It's a camp."

You pause a moment.
"Is that bad?"

Both adventurers look to each other, and shrug.
"Maybe?" they say simultaneously.

"That is not very specific, yes."
Georg speaks up again. "Well, the trail is used by caravans. But- It could be bandits. Or less friendly monsters."
Eiryn continues kicking the firepit, picking into the conversation as well. "This is old, though."

Georg shakes his head.
"Doesn't matter who uses it, you'd need to be moving all the time-"

>>
You puff your cheeks, blowing a slow lung-full of air out again.
Breathe in, breathe out.

Breathe in-
No, no, too far that hurts-

Gah.

"We should head back then, yes? And pass around a warning to the caravan."
Both of them nod, clearly relieved.

"Yeah. We'll keep it to just the adventurers and Kenzington, though." Eiryn replies.
"Why?"
"People tend to... panic. Badly."

You blink slowly.
"If we tell them that we think there are bandits, they will panic?"
"Yes."
"That's stupid, yes."

Both of the adventurers shrug, turning and setting off in a direction. The one that will lead you all back to the caravan, specifically. Using the sun as a waypoint against the road...
Well, not everyone can magically cheat their way to finding things. Or Harpy cheat, or Wolf cheat.

You've got it pretty good.

You keep pace behind the two of them, trying to relax, letting the rush of combat and the pain of the aftermath fade to a sluggish grey. You rotate your arms, trying to stop yourself from stiffening up- Blocking the gryphon took a great deal of your strength. You'll probably be sore tomorrow, ribs notwithstanding.

You lightly skim your brain for topics as you walk, anything to break monotony and distract you from the creeping pain- Nin's dust is a miracle and a half, but you still have to move and breath and all that.

Well, you could just outright ask Eiryn for their gender. You're... fairly certain that it's not something you're supposed to do, but it's starting to irk at you at this point. You could try and get stories out of them, but adventurers are surprisingly closed lip- Maybe it's just that people don't know each other? Or maybe they just don't like to talk about dungeon delves. Hmm.

You end up puzzling your way all the way back to the caravan.
Which means you get a conversation of a sort, though reporting your work and findings doesn't really fit your description of interesting. It already happened to you, didn't it?
>>
>>40184786
"-but why a gryphon?"
This is the third time Kenzington has asked such in about as many minutes.

Both adventurers look to you. Again.
"This is not my fault, yes? The magic does not work like that. I said as much."
The shrug, and the stocky caravan head waves a hand to gather everyone's attention.
"Alright, all of ya, back up. Start. Magic?"

"I have earth magic, yes? I can feel things through it. So I used that to find animals."
He waves again.
"So you found... a gryphon."

"I found large footsteps. It does not work like that- All I can guess at is the size."
He rubs a hand across his chin, humming noisily.
"Arright, I can take that. But why go for something big?"
"Lots of meat. I thought it would be a bear, yes? I did not know there were giant gryphons in the woods."

"Alright, alright- Keep a hand on it, will ya? At least till we stop-"
Georg interrupts, his voice turning nasally as he complains.
"It's leaking all through the bag-"
"Well, it's too damn big to butcher on the road, so you hafta wait."
"Ugh."

The paladin coughs softly once.
"One more thing, sir."
"Yeah?"
"Used campsites. Old, but-"
The head grunts again.

"Yeah. I catch your drift. I'll pass it ta who needs to know."

With your current duties completed and only mildly mentally scarring, it's about tiem you got a reward, you think.

Luckily, being the giant hearted spider you are- And humble to boot- You're willing to accept small prizes for your efforts. Like food. What you are saying is that at this junction in time, you are hungry. And while you can't actually stop the caravan (you completely could) there is a food truck. Wagon.

There is a place that will give you food.

They already know you by name, but that is because you are memorable.

"-I am aware that you are an arachne, but was either of your parents a bottomless pit?"
Shut up.
"I have a name, yes?"
"Is your name 'oh god, where have all the supplies gone?'"
"I am the one who fills them, you-"

"Sssssssstooooop being ssssso louuuud."
The older woman- who looks like she eats about as much as you, ha!- stops, glancing around for the source of the voice. You reach around behind you, Nin dancing to avoid your hand, and pull Esmerelda into the daylight.

"Noooooo- lemme ssssleep."
The lady stares at the miniature snake-girl coiled around your hand, hanging her human body beneath it in a pitiful attempt to shelter in your shadow.

"You sleep too much, yes? Maybe I should give you to Eiryn, and they can put you through paladin training. Push-ups until you collapse, lazy snake."
"I can do pushups forever."
"Pushups with your arms, cheater. Lifting your body with your tail doesn't count!"

The cook gestures with a rather large looking fork, trying to get your attention once more.
"Uh- Lyra?"
"Yes?"
"Who is that?"

You hold up the upside down snake, who blinks sleepily as she stares back at the woman.
"This lazy reptile is Esmerelda, yes. Or Ezzy for short. Ezzy, this is the quartermaster, Agnes."
"Hello?"
"Hi."
>>
>>40185862
Both of them give terse, awkward greetings, as though they expect each other to bite.
Which is silly. For Ezzy, anyway. Humans aren't poisonous.

Or venomous.

"I am glad you have met, yes? Can I have food now."
Agnes sighs, Ezzy slumps further down, clinging to your wrist.

"Alright. Fine. Can you tell me what I'll be salting and preserving tonight, then?"
"Gryphon. Thank you!"

You bail out with your small pile of jerky- not a meal by any stretch of the imagination, but enough to take the edge of your hunger.
Agnes just stares as you go.

You chew the strips of meat one at a time, clicking with satisfaction as you sweep back to the side of the caravan train, walking and chewing at the same time with irreproducible skill.

Ezzy just helps herself to the piece in your hand, all while staying in the shade.

"Nrmf- You weren't serious about the training thing, were you?"
"Should I have been?"
"Uh."

You laugh lightly.
"Is there training you want to do?"
The snake grimaces.
"More hunting, I think?" She offers timidly.

"Yes?"
"I like hunting. It felt good."
You prod the hanging snake with one finger, and she tries to guard herself with a free hand.

"I'll see if Sheszka or Jin can take you when we stop for the night. Or I can go out with you, yes. Or maybe we can find some weapon training? I am not my mother." You murmur.
"Okay."

You turn your mind to the question burning through you as you walk- How exactly does on train a Lamia?
Let along a snake sized one?

Before you had her lift rocks and things- and that worked for a bit. And there's fighting, you suppose. But Ezzy vetoed Tiny Animal Death Arena weeks ago. Maybe if you removed the 'tiny' from the name? Or just not name it? Maybe it was the betting she was irritated about, but you're pretty sure Nin was joking.

Your mind circles round the subject over and over, though you don't manage any real conclusion. Monster physique isn't... well, it isn't human. And all the knowledge of your previous life is largely useless when it comes time to arrange effective workouts for people whose shape and capability no longer matches the human norm.

In the end, you resolve to put her back into weapon drills- So long as she's using her arms, it'll be a good workout for her. She could even manage it during the day, as you travelled- space for Esmerelda is at a premium, because she doesn't take any.

The sun is dipping lower by the time you're really setting your plan down- Ezzy wormed her way up your arm at some point in the afternoon, hiding away beneath your hair and slumbering around your neck. You'll put her to work with the spear again- and if she wants to try something else, you can call in Eiryn. The paladin had said that the order's training involved every weapon under the sun.

'Different blades for different situations' and all that. And then they'd admitted that maces weren't blades at all, but that they hadn't wanted to ruin the analogy, and-

Actually, that brings you to a real question.

You're still not sure if Eiryn is a boy or a girl. It's been three whole days, you're pretty sure that means that you shouldn't be calling them they or them and this is just getting irritating already.

Now, short of asking point blank, how would you go about- Oh. Secret weapon number one, deploy!
>>
>>40186649

"Sheszka? Are you up?"
You've been feeling the wolf shifting for a while now- closer to waking or just trying to get comfortable, you aren't sure.

Of course, she answers you and dispels that right away.
"Lyra?"

You nod.
"I have a question, yes?"
She drags herself up till she's sitting, stretching as you clatter forward, one step closer to your destination every second.
"Okay."

You take a deep breath.
"Do you know if Eiryn is a boy or a girl?"
You check over your shoulder as you wait for her response, the scratching contentedly at the back of her head. You're kind of surprised she isn't using her foot- Wait, is that monster racism, or something?

"Eiryn is a boy, yes."
And the mystery ends.

"Can you smell that sort of thing on people?"
"Yes. Also, he walked up and took a bath in the river."

Bonus Scenes is a possible use of time, especially with my schedule all screwy. I'll try putting up a vote for a few when I run my next thread.

>>40186787
They are!

>>40186815
Lyra tends to get more as she closes on leveling, while the rest pare their options down as they close in.
At present moment, I've got 3 I'll offer for sure, one that's borderline, and a few other options.

While we're on topic: How should I order evolution offers when they're happening?
At random?
Alphabetical order? By starting power or something?
People will have to turn one down to see the next.

If you have time, can you check your e-mail please?

Thanks for runnimg!

If we reject all evolutions because we want to see what's available, will we get a chance to choose the evolution we want the next time we go to sleep?
>>
>>40186884
>While we're on topic: How should I order evolution offers when they're happening?
I'd go by the order in which we met the prereqs.
>>
>>40186884

If you offer by starting power, most players will pick the first, unless being slightly weaker at first has bigger bonus down the line. but then players might get miffed if they refuse one, and then the next is less powerful,or too niche overall
Order we met requirements may work. but not being able to see all the options to pick makes it harder to decide whether to take it or not.

I think the choice that would make the most people happy is plainly stating what the potential of each evolution is relative to the next.

So we have a choice, power or speed? More magic sooner or a wider variety? Would the weakest choice now (hardmode) make the most satisfying by the end? Stuff like that.
>>
>>40186884
>People will have to turn one down to see the next.

Is it like that in the manga? Do we really need to keep it like that?
>>
>>40187050
I can Imagine at this level each of the forms are actually fighting it out to be picked
>>
>>40187094
It's not the most player friendly mechanic, but most of us have seen far worse.
>>
>>40187135
All the while some spider god is off somewhere and laughing at the wendigos, if only they knew a tier 4 spider was coming
>>
>>40186971
Agreed, it's how it was done so far, should stay that way.

But I am still miffed that we have to turn down an offer permanently to even explore other options.
>>
>>40186884
>While we're on topic: How should I order evolution offers when they're happening?
well...
>People will have to turn one down to see the next.
GOD NO. I'll go with whatever is easiest for you as long as it's not this
>>
>>40186887
Done!

>>40186960
I'll probably go with this.

>>40186971
This too.

>>40186991
My issue is that I want to show off more evo's, and let people pick from them- But a list feels a bit clinical, and the alternative, the 'one at a time' thing, might result in frustration.

>>40187050
I'm torn between making the names more transparent (less grave arachne, more descriptive), and giving them names thematically appropriate to the powers/abilities.
>>
>>40187199

I like lists. but i know what you mean. make a choice, maybe have it so that the "voice" gives us a half list, a hint of why we have each choice ? not a lot of detail,a sort of summary of what we did that allow us to get each evolution?
>>
>>>>40186884
You should offer them all if only to avood the shitstorm, id prefer have the choosing be meta
>>
>>40187199
The issue with letting us redo the selection if we decline all the possible evos is that it effectively just pushes the evo back one sleeping period and gives us full choice information.

To be completely honest, if I were running this I'd just choose the most fitting evolution and remove the choice, since we've had shitstorms about evo choices in the past.
>>
>I'm torn between making the names more transparent (less grave arachne, more descriptive), and giving them names thematically appropriate to the powers/abilities.

That works. You could have fun with it, inserting names of gods or mythical figures to add depth if that's your sort of thing. As long it's it's not Lyramon, Ice Lyramon, Magma Lyramon.

Perhaps a better way to go about it is to describe what each would be like in a dream like thing. The efficiency of lists without being a list.
>>
>>40187295
I am aware of how cliche this may sound for a system. It may even be a bit special snowflaky if done in certain ways.
>>
>>40187185
>>40187179
>>40187145
>>40187094
Noted.

This >>40187135 has a decent idea- Would something like a dream sequence, with differing sensations of power and form work out?
More narrative than list.
>>
>>40187307
I now want Lyra to announce her next evolution just like this now.

"SkullLyramon digivolved to _____Lyramon"
>>
I'm personally just looking forward to the reactions of the caravan when we change. ESPECIALLY if we get another blessing.
>>
>>40187328
That sounds like a fine way to compromise. It would be cool getting a taste of the possible powers without seeing the name attached to em.
>>
>>40187328

sounds good I think thats what >>40187314 and >>40187295 may have been going for.
>>
>>40187328
>Would something like a dream sequence, with differing sensations of power and form work out?

That would sound interesting. Or maybe every form gets to fight a certain dream opponent, so we get to see how they'd perform? And maybe some every day situation if they improve on our ability to build stuff.
>>
>>40187328
That would be fun. Figures in dreams that could be anything from our family to old cartoon characters. Hearing whispers at the edge of consciousness that speak of glory or ruin. Maybe talking to something like a greater elemental through some sort of spiritual link. Lots of possibilities.
>>
>>40187438
Dream Nin saying to pick one because it's the most queenly
>>
>>40187574
We siezed control of a wolf pack, and also are known by each race of the woods, aren't we?

We're in serious trouble with the evos.
>>
>>40187574
While amusing, that could potentially start a small civil war among the players.

Though for all i know REQM could handle it quite well
>>
>>40187438
>old cartoon characters
So Mickey Mouse is going to be squeaking out that we should subjugate every village we cross and raze any that resist?
>>
>>40187694
Who are you? the ghost of mister Disney?

Aww I missed it.
>>
>>40187328
I for one love the idea of having a dream the night before we evo that lets us watch our potential evos duke it out. Solves questions players have and doesnt give a strict ugly list
