You are Kusajishi Riku, Captain of the Ninth Division of the Seireitei's Court Guard, and you've finally gotten the opportunity you've been waiting for. Today, you have an opportunity to go to Hueco Mundo without attracting any attention.

“I'll go alone,” you announce to the assembled Captains.

Kenpachi scoffs. “An leave me behind while you get to fight?”

“Nobody else here knows how to use the world-tying rite from the other side,” you observe. “If something comes along and offs me, anyone else I took would be stuck. It makes no sense to take anyone else with me.”

“I could probably,” Aizen begins, but you cut him off as well. “And you have no experience in Hueco Mundo. Even if you know the technique, that's not enough.”

“I'll be fine.”

The Head Captain stares long and hard at you, as if evaluating your resolve. “I see you are fully committed to this action. I will trust your judgment.”

You nod quietly. “Yes, sir. I'll be back with news.”

Yoruichi gives you a look that seems to demand you follow through on that promise.

The first order of business is to leave Rangiku in command while you're gone. When you tell her about your crazy plan, she can't help but shake her head. “You sure you don't want to bring someone with you?”

“I am,” you insist. “This fight's gonna be a tough one, and I can't let anyone else see what I'm up to out there.”

“I... understand, Captain.”

You offer a modest smile. “Hey, come on. Give me some credit. Throw one Gillian at me or fifty, doesn't make a difference to me!”

Rangiku smiles back, somewhat reassured by your boast. “Right. I'll be waiting for your return, ma'am... we all will.”

The Garganta opens easily, and you step through into the space between worlds. The reiatsu gathers at your feet as you stride confidently into the world of the Hollows. The world is every bit as bleak and hopeless as youv'e come to expect.

Oh, and a question. Last thread someone said hollows can be purified with non-shinigami weapons, but I'm not sure. Is the whole eradicating hollow souls thing because of quincy weapons, or does it apply to all non-shinigami weapons?
>>
>>40135672
Not a samefaging.
>>
>>40135688
yhwach was actually eating all the hollows the quincy's killed.
>>
>>40135688
No, Quincy weapons remove the souls from the cycle entirely because Ywach is eating them. It's an effect very specific to the Quincy.

Probably for the best that you get moving, but you keep your eyes open as you move through the desert. It's because of that, and because of his complete lack of stealth, that you see the Hollow coming at you from the side. An Adjuchas, with a body like a fat gray worm and a head like the shell of a pale crab.

“You're a Shinigami!” he shouts enthusiastically. “What luck, to test my new skills on worthy prey! I'll kill you, Shinigami!”

Seems he's got things backwards. An asshole Menos like this who'd attack you without warning just to see what he's capable of? He's your prey.

I'm not worried about Aizen, I'm worried about his cronies watching and saying "Hey, that shorter one popped a mask on and got stronger for a brief moment."

You dont worry about Aizen directly, you worry about him indirectly.
>>
>>40136314

The fact of the matter is, it is not actually described how Aizen's illusions work in its entirety.

You feel the energy building in the palm of your hand before you release the spell. You can tell that Tenkotsuki is watching in anticipation, hoping to see it go off without a hitch.

“Kurohitsugi!” you announce, watching the purplish black coffin leap into existence, as if congealed out of dark, dense reiatsu that pours from your body and saturates the air. The “coffin”, however, comes into being around the Hollow's head instead of its whole body. It's a much smaller effect, but much quicker too.

“Dantō.”

In an instant the box distorts as the reiatsu that composes it obliterates the Adjuchas' head and neck, before cracking and gradually fading away. The results are catastrophic, and far too grisly to even put into words. Needless to say, the Hollow inside is killed instantly. There's nothing left from the hole in its chest up that's even recognizable.

Tenkotsuki lets out a low whistle. “Damn.”

“It was difficult to put the bottom side in place,” you tell her. “I'm not sure it'd work against too powerful an enemy.”

“But when it does work,” she muses, “will it ever WORK.”

One down.

You find the only friendly Menos you've ever seen in the cave that Halibel seems to favor. Strangely, you find that Starrk and Apacci are wearing clothing: much better clothing that last time you met.

“I'm impressed,” you admit. “Where'd you find cloth here?”

“There's somethin' that does the trick down in the Forest,” Apacci tells you, showing off her white outfit. It looks similar to a shihakusho, but with white hakama and a black sleeveless top underneath an open white vest, held together by a red sash. Her Zanpakuto is tucked into that sash. “Any color other than white's a pain in the ass to do though.”

Starrk, on the other hand, is wearing white trousers and a plain black shirt, with a white poncho thrown about his shoulders. Simple, and yet it kinda suits him, you think. “I was wonderin' when you'd be back.”

“You mentioned several Zanpakuto being in Hueco Mundo?” Halibel recalls. “Have you come to find them with us?”

>Yes. Don't mention the attacking Menos part.

Well let's see, we're trying to avoid...

>Seireitei and Hueco going out of balance
>Seireitei soul genocide
>Gillians being attracted like vultures to the mortal world once a Hollow soul feeding frenzy starts due to massive casualties piling up
>>
>>40137432
Yeah, this is a pretty big point. As long as we don't kill the ones which are different, it's fine, since regular Gillian are literally nonsapient, and they are stuck that way forever. If anything, this is a kindness.
>>
Let's just wait for Sharktits to clarify how hollows see the issue before we go off assuming anything, guys.
>>
>>40137432
Technically over time Gillian can become Adjuchas which is what these guys are, and we have proof that they can be benevolent.

I mean, it doesn't really make sense for them to care about people outside of their immediate social circle, especially not the Tres Bestias, but not everyone is all rational all the time.
>>
>>40137527
Nooope. Only certain Gillian even have a chance of growing into an Adjuchas. The ones with the pointy noses will remain as Gillian forever.
>>
>>40137527
If they ever stop evolving they loose the chance forever. Not moving forward constantly is a death sentence for the minds inside a gillian, and many of the ones you see wandering the forest of menos will never be sentient again
>>
>>40137527
Only some gillian retain their identity. Those gillian can become adjuchas.
The rest? Empty, mindless husks, serving no purpose other than as food for the individualist gillian or weak adjuchas, or very occasionally cannon fodder for anyone who figures out how to give them orders.

“How do you feel about Gillians?” you ask quietly.

Apacci frowns at you, and the rest of the Hollows' responses are difficult to judge. “Now why the hell're you askin' that?”

“It's important,” you insist. “Do they think? Do they feel? Do they have personalities of their own?”

After a long pause, Halibel shakes her head. “They do not.”

“Truth be told, I'm also here on a mission,” you admit. “There's going to be a war in the living world, which means we're expecting tens of thousands more deaths in the next year or so.”

“And that requires you to balance things out,” Starrk concludes. Your silence is all the answer he needs.

“Thought as much.”

“If I kill one Gillian,” you tell the group, “that's several hundred souls that don't have to die in the Soul Society to maintain the balance. I'm not asking you to understand, or to approve... I just wanted you to know.”

None of the Menos seem too comfortable with the thought of you killing off Menos en-mass, let alone being party to it. Eventually, Starrk is the one to respond. “And you're sayin' it needs to be done?”

“It's not great, but I think it's better than the alternative,” you tell him. “By shifting the balance towards the living world, it'll allow our scientists to make something called “artificial souls”. Basically we're planning to use them as ballast, to balance out the universe short-term.”

“Cheating the system, huh?” Starrk muses. “Clever bastards really think they can do it?”

You nod. “By the time the next war rolls around, we may be equipped to handle it without extreme measures.”

“The next war, huh?” Apacci scowls. “You sound so sure about that.”

“There's always a 'next war', Apacci,” Starrk replies. “I don't like this, but it sounds like you don't either.”

“Not particularly.”

Halibel nods. “I won't hold it against you.”

>>
>>40137958
Much to your surprise the “forest” turns out to be beneath the sands of Hueco Mundo, a massive cavern seemingly without end held up by stone pillars beyond any hope of counting. In this space the many Gillian mill about aimlessly in the dark, no more aware of their surroundings than so many black weeds.

Opening a Garganta to the Seireitei and shoving your arm through it, you cast Tenteikura with Tenkotsuki's help. You're able to locate the Head Captain and Mayuri, as well as Yoruichi, Rangiku, and the members of your Commandos. In the Forest there's also a single Shinigami, whose mind you also contact. You take a moment to check in with them, letting them know to expect the first Gillians to start dying within the hour.

“Well then,” you mutter. “We've got some time to find those blades, and our guide should be here any second.”

“Our guide?” Sun-Sung hisses. “What do you mean? And wouldn't it be quicker to get your job over with?”

You simply shrug. “The job has to get done, but helping you three comes first.”

“There's a Shinigami out here,” Starrk mutters. “I felt him last time I was down this way.”

“Starrk, you moron!” Lilynette shouts, smacking her... brother, maybe... across the back of his head. “You shoulda said something!”

It takes almost half an hour for the Shinigami to approach you, and at first you don't recognize him as such. He wears the fur of a Hollow around his shoulders and a mask with antlers over his face.

“A... Captain?” the man asks in a state of pure confusion. “Standing next to Hollows? Adjuchas... and a Vasto Lorde... and what are those three?”

Don't tell him about Aizen, and don't tell him about our snowflake powers.

Well I just read something interesting on the wiki. Ashido is at the level of bankai with out having a shikai or bankai active. This dude could probably rival yamamoto if he had bankai. We have to take him back to soul society.

Lol I'm pretty sure the only person who will ever know about our snowflake powers before we choose to actually use them is Yoruichi. Not even Gin or Rangiku know about our real bankai.

How else are we going to successfully pull a double-reverse kubo on Aizen?
>>
>>40138805
Officer class is not bankai level
>>
>>40138848
Not even Yoruichi knows exactly what Riku's bankai does, IIRC. Snowflake powers was probably referring to the Visored abilities.

Aizen: "Oh, did you think I was over there, Riku? Just who are you looking at?"
Riku: "Did you really think Tousen was the only one in Soul Society who could overcome you Aizen? The only one who could keep a secret from everybody? Bankai."

Then Gin and Kenpachi show up. Total lels.
That reminds me, we should become bro-tier with Kenpachi for this express purpose. He'd hate someone like Aizen who relies so much on his zanpakuto.

“Kusajishi Riku, Captain of the Ninth Division,” you introduce yourself. “And you are?”

“Kano Ashido, Eighth Division,” he replies. “What happened to Captain Muguruma?”

You frown. “Long story. Very complicated, and not something I tell every stranger about, Kano.”

“What the hell is going on here?” Ashido fires back, pulling off the Hollow mask. “Why is a Captain here in the company of Menos?”

“Things are getting really weird,” you explain. “I happened across some Menos who seemed decent enough, and figured I might as well make some friends. Now I'm here to kill as many Gillians as I can so that we don't have to purge thirty or forty thousand souls out of the Rukongai.”

Ashido shakes his head in disbelief as he struggles to keep up. “But wait, why are you with the Menos?”

“Because I've been helping them become Arrancar,” you explain, and even as the words leave your mouth you realize how insane that sounds.

“You're WHAT?”

“Squad Zero told me there were Asauchi here that your comrades brought over with them,” you explain, hoping to handwave any mention of Hollowfication and Aizen out of the discussion. “I need to use them to seal three of my friends' masks and increase their power.”

“But WHY!” Ashido shouts back, completely nonplussed. “What does that have to do with killing Gillians?”

“Nothing!” you insist. “I'm here because it all made sense at the time to take care of two pressing matters at once, how are you not getting this!?”

“Because they're HOLLOWS!” Ashido bellows. “I mean, have you SEEN them!? One of them's half shark!”

“Depending on your answer I'll either help you, or we'll have to fight.”

“Have you ever talked to an evolved Menos before?” you ask Ashido, causing him to nearly drop the mask in his hand from sheer surprise.

“I... of course not,” he replies angrily. “Only some banter when fighting Adjuchas, from time to time.”

“I stopped to talk to one once,” you reminisce. “Do you know why an Adjuchas feeds on its brethren?”

“I don't care,” Ashido insists stubbornly.

“It's because if we don't, we lose our minds,” Apacci explains. “Everything that makes us who we are, gone in an instant. Replaced by mindless hunger... it hasn't even got the finality of actual death.”

“The truth is,” you press, “things have gotten messy in the Seireitei. Who was your Lieutenant? Was it Lisa?”

Ashido nods.

“She suffered the same fate as Kensei, Love, Shinji, Rose, Hachigen, Hiyori, Mashiro... and myself.”

You draw out your fox-like Hollow mask, and feel a surge of powerful reiatsu filling your body. Ashido's eyes widen, and his hand tightens around the hilt of his sword.

“No need for that,” you tell him in two voices at once, lifting the mask to show your face. “I'm in full control. This is what happens when a Shinigami is forced against their will to become more like a Hollow... called Hollowfication.”

The Shinigami eyes you warily, his hand relaxing slightly. “You say you were forced? By whom?”

“Aizen,” you tell him. “The Lieutenant under Captain Hirako, who replaced him. They were targeted by him for an experiment, which ended with what you see. Of the officers I listed, I was the only one whose transformation went unnoticed. The rest were sentenced to death, but were rescued and taken to the living world.”

“See, we have more in common with some of the Menos than what you've been told,” you conclude. "The whole thing's left me feeling more understanding toward them than even I was ready for."

Ashido's hand leaves the hilt of his Zanpakuto. “Understand... them?”

You nod. “I think I can trust them more than most Shinigami right now, and I want to help them. Even the Royal Guard decided to look the other way.”

“If what you say is true,” Ashido muses, “then I will stay my blade... for now. I want to speak with these Hollows though. I'll hear about them from their own mouths.”

“That's fair,” Hailibel replies quietly.

“So,” you tell Ashido, “please take us to the Asauchi we came for. You should see this when it happens.”

It doesn't take long. It seems that Ashido couldn't possibly forget the spot where his teammates were buried, their blades stuck into the ground in a circle. All of them are Asauchi, carried by unseated Shinigami who had the misfortune to be trapped here and who gave their lives after exceeding their duties.

Brave, but ultimately foolish.

“This is the place where my friends rest,” Ashido explains. “Strange... it's been so long, I can hardly remember their faces.”

Halibel reaches her hand out to grasp the hilt of a sword. “Though I do not know your name,” she muses, “I promise to use this blade well.”

Sun-Sung bows her head respectfully as she retrieves her own sword, but says nothing. Same with Mila Rose, who seems to try and come up with appropriate words but ends up silent as well. Ashido seems stunned at the gesture.

“To think they'd hear such words from a Hollow... what a strange day.”

You rest a hand on his shoulder. “Stranger days are on the way... find something to commemorate them by. TA proper burial in the Soul Society is the least they deserve.”

Ashido looks at you thoughtfully before bowing. “I may have rushed to judge you, ma'am. I apologize.”

“And I shouldn't have tried to lie to you,” you offer. “Though, I understand your response, and I hope you can understand my secrecy now that you know.”

Then, it begins.

>>40140212
Mila Rose is the first to go. You prepare alongside Tenkotsuki in case you're needed and loosen her leonine mask. It comes off easily, shattering into fragments with seem to flow into her sword. For a brief moment it seems to take the form of a reverse-edged blade with a long hilt: a rhomphaia, you reckon. Then it shrinks back down into its sealed form, resembling a katana with a claw-like hook for a handguard. The remnants of her mask form a tiara on her brown mane of hair, and a collar-like shape at the base of her neck. Apacci hands her a uniform, which again resembles a white shihakusho. Instead of the standard upper garment, hers is a carefully-cut bandeau.

Sun-Sung is next: her sword briefly takes the form of an urumi, or whip-sword, before sealing itself into the shape of a katana. Her mask fragments resemble the side of her head in her old form, but now look like a massive arching crest or an eyebrow unlike any other. Both these Arrancar seem to have reiatsu that at least doubles an average Lieutenant, which places them around Rangiku's level. Both are well shy of a Captain, and for the first time you notice Apacci's strength in comparison to theirs. As she hands Sun-Sung a long-sleeved white garment, you feel that the first Arrancar in their group is at the level of an "average" Captain.

"I still can't believe that actually works," Ashido muses. "And that I'm allowing it to happen... this better not be a hallucination. I'd better not be bleeding out in a ditch somewhere."

Finally, the part you've been waiting for arrives: it's the Vasto Lorde's turn.

"Watch closely," you tell Ashido. "This is the kinda thing you may never see again."

This time, the Hollow before you seems to struggle to shed energy off into the sword stuck into the ground at her feet. It's understandable, there's a lot more energy there after all. It pours into her blade, which expands into the shape of an oversized butterfly knife.

Actually using the plot rock caused the arrancar changed by it to be stronger. It's just that Apachi rolled a hundred and as a result was stronger then it. I have a theory that Hollows who become arrancar and put their power into an Asauchi are stronger then those that don't. And can probably grow stronger through training as well.

The blade then seems to shimmer as the central portion dissolves away, leaving just the edges intact. The guard forms: cruciform, like a western sword, with three circular quillons at each extreme. Her body shifts as well, becoming more human-like and losing much of its armor. The blade on her right arm narrows, and develops a series of gill-like slits on each side while swelling slightly near her elbow. It's large, but not overwhelmingly so.

A blast of steam accompanies the last stage of the transformation, obscuring the final results until it finally dissipates.

Gradually a form is revealed. Feminine and well muscled, with dark skin and messy blonde hair, and only a trace of Hollow bone covering the top of her chest and her lower jaw.

"Congratulations," you offer as she dons the clothing Apacci hands to her, which reveals a surprising amount of the Arrancar's midriff. "Now, I'm afraid I'm going to have to take care of that nasty business I came here for... feel free to chat."

"We should run," Ashido advises. "The Gillian will be attracted by that... as will any Adjuchas in the area."

"I'm counting on it..."

I feel like "about twice as strong as an average lieutenant" is if anything a generous estimate for the Tres Bestia original amount of power.

They did. Everyone rolled decently well except Halibel, who rolled a 93. Sun-Sung and Mila Rose are a fair bit stronger, but Halibel and Apacci got the best of it.

It was a good thing you killed so many Menos that day.

The “First Sino-Japanese War” claimed 47,000 dead, which was before then an unprecedented number. But as Mayuri explained it to you, the forty-three Gillians and seventeen Adjuchas you killed were together the equivalent of over 57,000 souls, which when released into the living world as souls ready for reincarnation allowed a similar number of artificial souls to be created. From this point onward, any event causing less than that many fatalities in a short period of time will not require any sort of purges in the Rukongai or Hueco Mundo.

As you would go on to tell Yoruichi, however, that was only the second best outcome of your hunting expedition. The best part was that Starrk, Halibel, Apacci, Sun-Sung, Mila Rose, and Lilynette took you up on your offer to move their home to the Valley of Screams anchored to your basement. They've begun patrolling the wastes of Hueco Mundo from the safety of the pocket dimension, allowing them unparalleled safety and ease of mobility.

In celebration, you and Yoruichi spent three days in training, developing a new theoretical application of Shunkō called “Kengen”, which blasts the gathered energy of your technique towards an enemy all at once. You've yet to test it or the Onibi, a new Zanjutsu technique suggested to you by Isshin, in battle.

Ashido's return is marked with a celebration in itself. As a powerful, experienced Shinigami he has been placed in the Lieutenant seat for his old Division under Shunsui. To date, and to your knowledge, he hasn't spoken to anyone about what you are or who you have living in an extradimensional space in your basement. Not like anyone would believe him anyway.

With Aizen still having yet to make a move, and your allies situated comfortably for now, you settle in and prepare for what promises to be a long, tense stalemate: a cold war between two factions nobody else in the Seireitei knows exist, feeling each other out over the stretch of years before the climactic meeting they both know must eventually come.

But for now, that day hasn't arrived yet. Right now, things are good.

500,000. We've still got something like 120,000 left.

Estimates for US combat dead range from 100,000 to 800,000 depending on the degree of civilian resistance, and Japanese deaths potentially in the millions. The most likely result would be at the lower end, at least for military casualties, as Japan would only really have the military forces to defend Kyushu from an invasion from the south. Which was really the only viable way to do it.

Long story short it would've been a damn disaster.

So has anyone taught Kano jensen yet? Cause I can't wait to see what he is like if he ever hits shikai or even bankai. I imagine him being on yamamoto's level considering he was as strong as the average captain in bankai without either of them.
>>
>>40141928
Unless he's seriously refined his footwork since we saw him last time, he's not going to get close unless we want him to get close. If we feel like keeping our distance and Kidoing him in the face, over and over, we can.

In melee we have a lot more more refinement, practice, and speed so we can still smack him around pretty well. He can take a lot of punishment, and he hits hard, but he'll have a hard time touching us. And if we pull out Shunko he's going to have a bad day.

We can give him some incentive.

And seriously, at least for his Zanpakuto's sake, we need to get him started on the path to learning its name.
>>
>>40141995

>>
>>40142132

>>
>>40142180
to be fair, that ban was eventually lifted, and they can't ban it if we get him to shikai before they set the ban in place.
>>
>>40142132
True, but we might not know why his Zanpakuto is so upset. Like, it's a perfectly reasonable, though completely incorrect, assumption that Zaraki's Zanpakuto is meant as a non-combat type, and Zaraki is just doing everything as wrong as possible.
>>
>>40142164
He can control his spirit energy just fine. And he was taking on adjuchas with a sealed fucking sword. even captians have issues with the adjuchas if they aren't in the top five.
>>
>>40142187
>You cut an impressive figure in front of your Division. There's some cautious optimism there.

>>
>>40142223

>>
>>40142249
I doubt they are capable of such a feat. The only person we can say for sure that are above us is yamamoto. After him it's a toss up between us unohana and the eight and thirteenth division captains and yoruichi.
>>
>>40142315
Shunsui, Isshin, Zaraki, Aizen (we don't know that), Yamamoto, Unohana (if she wanted), maybe Ukitake. Also I'd argue Gin could do it, because that's where his shikai could really come in handy due to Gillians being so dumb.
>>
>>40142180
And?

When have we ever really listened to them? We have secret training areas for a reason, and a perfectly good excuse to use them. Just the unleashed spiritual pressure from Riku and Zaraki could kill a lot of folks.

And if questioned further say we use him as a training dummy, I mean fighting partner, for Hakuda, we don't have to worry about accidentally seriously injuring him by hitting too hard, it's great.

>>40142210
True, we don't know the problem. But the first thing that's going to come up if the broach the issue is him saying it has no name, I don't think he keeps it a secret. And the obvious first step at that point is for him to learn its name, and establish a dialogue.
>>
>>40142243
At this point you're roughly on par with Yoruichi, Shunsui, and Ukitake. Which is a step behind Yamamoto and Unohana. Aizen also falls in that range somewhere.

Power levels are bullshit, though. So long as you're in the same general neighborhood as your opponent it comes down to technical skill, situation, and suitability.
