"Mom?"
She doesn't answer. The monsters continue to circle the burning orb surrounding her. I'm not sure if its protecting her or imprisoning her.
"MOM!"

I am Itsukuma Masami.
I found Mom!
She's inside of an orb of fire on the ground floor. Monsters circle around the burning globe as they try to find a way inside. With me, Julie assesses the situation and worriedly looks on.

"What can we do from here?" I ask her.
"I can probably put out the fire, but I'm more worried about the monsters."

There's three of them, one of them is the secretary that usually waits at the desk on this floor. Or at least, this is what she looks like when she's not being a secretary.
The other two I haven't seen before, but they look extremely disinterested in me. They're more enthralled by the burning globe that is keeping them at bay.

The secretary freezes. She steps back and sits down in a chair, and then spins it around to face us.
"May I help you?" Her voice still sounds soothing and calm, despite her face looking completely the opposite.

"LET MOM GO RIGHT NOW!"
I run over to the woman in the chair and start wildly shaking her by the shoulders.
"LET HER GO LET HER GO LET HER GO!"
"Hey-ey-ey-ey-ey STOP IT!" She bats my hands away.

Maybe she didn't hear me the first time.
"LET MOM GO RIGHT NOW!"
She seems confused, and then asks me something strange.
"Aren't you the one making that orb?"

I can feel a tear on my cheek, that was the question I was hoping she wouldn't ask.
"No.."

This is bad, I don't know how to get Mom out of there if she's not the one causing it!
"Can you make those monsters go away?" I ask her. Pointing to the two that are circling the globe of fire.

"Hold it." The secretary crosses her arms. "There's two of you and one of me. I'm not sending the drones away unless I know you're not going to immediately attack me. Promise me you won't."

>Okay, I will not hurt you!
>I-I can't make that promise! I barely know you!

"You can't be serious!" Julie yells at him. "You don't seriously think we would agree to-"
"Okay." I say to her, crossing my arms. "Only if you don't do anything first!"

"Not good enough." She leans back in her chair. "That just leaves it open for you to turn on me when I don't expect you to."
"Okay then-!" I point at her, "I will not hurt you!"

"Masami!" Julie exclaims.
"Deal!"

The monsterwoman looks behind her at the two circling the orb. They come to a halt and stand perfectly still.
Within an instant, both of them turn to ash!
"Yikes.." Julie admires in awe.

"Now. How do we get the orb down?" The lady asks.
"I was hoping you would know." I pout.

"Well I don't." She leans back. "I don't know what gave you idea that I did."

Julie looks at the orb for a second, and then an idea occurs to her.
"I can get it down using my aura. It can douse those flames."
"I could also try activating the fire sprinkler for this floor." The lady suggests. Propping her feet on her own desk. "I'm still not sure that's enough, though."

What could you try?

>Hold it! No one is doing anything until I know why she's inside of that orb and what you want with her, lady!
>Using a card (which card?)
>Maybe the other world has some answers as to what that orb is and why she is in it.

"You two stay here. Julie, keep an eye on her."
"Will do!"

Gently concentrating, I feel myself slip to the other world. Maybe it has some answers as to why Mom decided to hide inside of his orb, or even if it was her own doing at all.

--

That's weird.
Unlike the rest of the building, which is sort-of transparent, this room is almost pitch-black. I can't see anything.

That's when I remember earlier, when everyone was lost and confused on the upper floors. It was dark in this world too, back then. I thought I had solved this problem by beating that guy upstairs, but now it seems to have come back.
"MOM!" I yell into the darkness.

No answer.
"MOOOOM!" I yell again louder.

I hear some stirring in the darkness, and then a whisper.
"Masami?"
"Mom!"

I run directly at the voice-
AND THEN I LEAP BACK!
"YEOW THAT'S HOT!"
Ouch ouch ow ow ow.
"That's really hot."

"Masami!? Where are you!?"
"Mom! Just.. stay still! Don't move! I'm going to go do something about this, right now!"

--

"She's in there!" I yell at Julie, and then grab her by the shoulders.
"SHE'S IN THERE SHE'S IN THERE SHE'S IN THERE"
"Ow Ow, I get it!"
"SHE'S IN A BURNING FIRE AND I CAN'T GET TO HER!"

The lady at the table sighs and stands up.
"I hope you two brought another change of clothes."
With that, the fire sprinklers turn on, dousing the entire room in a torrent of water.

The ball of flame mildly flickers from the shower. Julie raises her blade.
With a sweep, a blue curtain falls over the orb!

It's struggling, but isn't quite completely gone just yet.

The flames aren't letting up. Inside, I can tell Mom is standing there. She seems unsure of what to do.
I'm sick of standing here and watching!

I approach the ball of fire, it's been significantly weakened by the sprinklers and Julie.

"Masami! Get back!" Julie yells at me.
The secretary only briefly tilts her head upward.

I let the speed card overtake me, and eye the inferno once more.
"MASAMI! NO!" She yells at me again.
I turn back to look at her and notice that she's channeling her blue aura to fight the flames even harder.
I immediately speed into the flames!
"MASAMI!" Julie yells.

Maybe this was a mistake! I can feel the burning at my feet as I rush in!
Julie is fighting it with all her might, but I can still feel the heat run up my back!

Suddenly, I feel cool.
I search around me and notice that the flames are definitely still burning. It's just this time, they're surrounding me, and leaving the middle perfectly intact.
Laying in the center of this mess, is Mom.

"MOM!" I quickly scoop her up into my arms, and turn back to the flames.
That's when I realize that Julie has lost a lot of strength. She tries to combat the flames, but it is slowly starting to fight against the sprinkler.

"Oh no." I'm trapped!

At that moment, I feel something grab a hold of me.

--

"Mom mom mom mom mom."
"Masami, calm down." Julie examines her, "She's just exhausted."

"BUT"
"MOM!"

Julie stands up, and turns around.
"I'm more worried about her, actually."

I stand up and look behind me. The secretary sits in her chair, completely exhausted.
She's covered in burns, charred bits of armor, and even part of her boots have melted.

"Um.. Thank you." I bow to her, she waves me off.
"It's fine. I didn't think it would be that bad." She coughs. "I'll get over it."

I turn to face Mom again and slowly help her into one of the lobby chairs. She's not quite with it, yet.

>Now what?

"Mom." I shake her. She groans and grabs onto my shoulder.
"Mom!" I try hugging her this time. She very weakly returns it.

"Masami, give her a minute." Julie is still tending to the secretary.
I don't want to, though!

I sit in Mom's lap and tightly squeeze her. This whole thing has been upsetting, and sitting here with her is probably the happiest I've been all day.
I can let it out now. It's okay to cry now that Mom is back with me.

Mom's arm lightly returns the hug.
"Julie." she turns to face me. "Thank you for all your help. I don't know how I can ever thank you."
"Masami, you know I would have helped you no matter where you went." She smiles.
"It's just-!" I think about the words I want to say. "You've been with me for so long, and you even said yourself that you didn't think I deserved all of this a long time ago. What made you change your mind?"

She sits next to the secretary and contemplates what I just asked her.
"That's a good question." She says, "Let me have some time to give you an answer."

"Oh! And-" I turn to the secretary. "Thank you, I'm not sure why you helped me, but I'm really happy that you did."
"Urgh." She responds.

I can feel Mom's grip getting stronger. Her breathing is starting to feel normal again. I stand up and try getting her attention once more.
"Mom.. Mom can you hear me?"
"mmm." Her head lifts up and meets my eyes. "Hey Sweetie. How are-"
That's when she notices the destroyed lobby, and remembers where she is.

"Oh my-!"
"Mom! It's fine. Just relax. I'm going to get us out of here. Then all of us can go home."

I take out Belle and approach the front door. It seems like something is blocking it from the outside, maybe concrete?
I swing my sword as hard as I can at it, but it uselessly clinks off.
"Ow.."

I pout. Then I turn to Julie.
She sighs and turns to her chair again, sitting down.
"Just wait a few minutes, Masami. I think we're all too tired to move right now anyway."

She's right, we don't want to do too much at one time. Maybe we would be better off going to a higher floor and trying to get down from there.
Or maybe we should wait here until our friends think of a way in. I really doubt they are just going to give up just because I told them to.

"I-I don't feel great."

The entire room focuses on the monster-secretary. Julie is propping her upright in her chair. Quickly, Julie empties a trash can and throws it in her lap.
"Quick! Use this!"
"N-no, not that."

She bats it away and falls to the floor, gripping her chest.

"Oh no!" Mom yells, Julie stares onward in shock.
"C-can monsters get heart attacks?!"
"I don't know!" I shout at her.

The secretary wrenches, heaving once more as she collapses completely.
"HhhruugHGHHH"
Julie tries using her aura to calm her down, but it doesn't seem to work. The monsterwoman is scratching against the tile floor!

There's a startling shatter. Metal-on-metal grinding fills the room with a screech. Followed quickly by the clatter and chaos of metal-on-stone-tile.

Where the woman was once kneeling, there is no longer a monster. Just the shattered sections of armor.
And in the center of the discarded iron, is a young girl. She has short blue hair, and is very naked. Julie moves to cover her with a tablecloth.

"Oh! I remember what I was going to ask!" I walk over to Mom and grab her attention. She seems shocked. "Why does that keep happening?"
