It occurs to you, strolling through the forest-
Rather, a forest-
That you do not, in fact, know what lives in the area.

You can draw certain conclusions. Types of trees, temperature, general geographic location, weather-
All of these combine to let you know about the environment, and to guess what lives there.

Only you're not a biologist, you don't actually know where you are geographically, and 'urban jungle' is a rather distant sort of idea from a literal jungle.

Not that you're in a literal jungle. You're just bemoaning the lack of easily accessible search engines- where Mom could teach you everything you wanted to know about where you grew up, you are now away from both Mom and where you grew up.

Luckily, you stride side by side with adventurers- rough and tumble folks who make a living doing exactly what you're doing right now. All it takes is a question.

"Huh? What kinda stuff lives around here?"
"Yes. What is good for hunting. Or easy to hunt. Or just what can we find around here?"
"Dunno. Animals?"

Well, that was informative. Thank you Georg number two for your brilliant insight.

>You're not Sheszka, but you can try and track by scent.
>A bit of earth magic could let you know what's on the ground- pulse and chase something big, maybe.

We should ask at the next guild location if there's such a thing as a regional bestiary. We were helping Lann with those reports for the guild, they're bound to have resources along those lines. If not we could make money compiling them!
>>

I am all for this, though compiling them seems more like Sarah or Dad's thing, depending on the level of detail we want to put in them.
>>
>>40093254
It'd be basically just keeping a diary.

It could even include what it tasted like, comments on what spices go good with it, maybe turn it into a diary/cookbook/bestiary.

You sigh lightly as you fish through your bags, the dim hope that you aren't the hunter and guide for this group fading by the second.

It doesn't tale long for you to find your crystal- the little mana battery still humming with power.
Humming to you, anyway. People who can't sense magic, probably not so much.

And really, you think as you draw it into the spell you're readying, you don't need it in your hands to use it.
It's just reassuring- the warmth of the crystal a reminder of the family that would do this for you at home.

Your spell slips easily into the earth below, a siren call for spirits that not even your unfamiliarity with the world around you can interrupt.
It hits you like a radar wave, that reverse picture of the area around you, from below rather than above.

You can feel the grinding wheels on the road behind you, the slow, steady steps of the beasts of burden. The pitter-patter of people walking alongside their wagons before they really get up to speed. The river's flow, where your sense ends, water and spirits creating a buzzing sense of blindness in your mental map.

And before you is an unexplored forest, trees and rocks, caverns and creatures. Miniature footsteps are recognized and ignored, your mind paring away extraneous information and searching out what you need.
Maybe you'll be fine without the internet- this works pretty well, if not for everything.

You grab onto a few specific signals- Heavy stomps somewhere deeper in the woods, the telltale clatter of a herd of... something. And another group of unidentifiable creatures, moving swiftly through the foliage somewhere within.
>>
>>40093378

You open your eyes to find Eiryn staring curiously at your face, keeping his or her distance but studying your features all the same.

They tilt their head to one side, pursing their lips as they take a guess-

"Prayer? I don't recognize the, er, symbol."

You glance down to the gently glowing crystal in your hands.

>>
You start yourself- and the group following you- towards the bigger monster thing.
Bigger means more food, you tell yourself. It's not just because you want to fight something.

You make a face at your own thoughts, bringing yourself back to reality, and the fact that you're technically in a conversation.

You tuck your crystal away as you speak, the glow dying slowly as it goes back to gathering power for you, secure in your pouch.

"Ah- It is just magic, yes? I, erm. I do not know much about the gods."
"Really?"
"Yes." You say softly to the paladin. "If you could share-"

"Absolutely!"
Eiryn's face is alight with- well, with devotion, you suspect.
"To start, I am a follower of the Light."

Georg drops a little further back, watching you with pity.

"Yes?"
"His domain is one of glory and beauty, his commandments just and-"
They continue on for some time, a litany- a literal litany of accomplishments and legends and whatever else rattled off with breathless fervour.

You manage to get a word in, right before they rev back up into another sermon.

"What does all that mean, though? Do the gods walk the world? Do they exist somewhere else?"
"Oh- Well, yes to both? Gods can appear in their temples, or consecrated areas."
"Mhm?"
"And Demi-Gods do walk the earth."
"what is the difference between them? Power?"

"Mostly. I'm surprised you haven't heard of the gods, to be honest. Monsters can- They can become blessed, did you know?"
"Yes. I am- and I do, I suppose."
Eiryn does a double take, reeling away from you and staring- Even Georg coughs heavily into one hand.

You're a little off-put.

"Is that a- Is that a big deal?"
"Uh-"

It's the older adventurer trailing behind you that answers, Georg's voice serious-
"It's- Yeah. It absolutely is. It isn't common, kiddo."
That spread way too fast for your liking.

Well, we have two blessings from a Demi-God (Protection and Fire) respectively and one from a full God (Earth).

As for our friends, Shezka has one from the Demi-God of the Moon.
Jin has one from the Demi-God of Fire and one from the God of the Night Sky.

You can't stop yourself from chewing your lip. It's not really- is it?

"Uh- Is it that strange? I didn't think it was, well, special, yes?"

Eiryn just stares, while the lanky sling-wielder laughs aloud.
"You didn't think it was special that gods took note of your accomplishments?"

You can feel yourself starting to blush, muttering.
"If you put it like that-"
"It is like that. Something you did caught the attention of the divine, and they've blessed you with power or protection or what have you- So that you can do more."
"Hm."

The paladin can't stay contained a moment longer, nearly bursting as they start to talk- babbling, really, questions firing too fast for you to even respond.

"Whats it like- No, who's blessed- What did you do? How did you- Can you even-"
You ward your companion off with one hand as they start to near hyperventilate, unable to stop.

"Eiryn- Eiryn. One thing at a time, yes."

"Hah, hah- Okay. I'm fine. Okay. I- Who, who's blessed you?"
"Is that- Is that something to tell other people?"

You both turn to Georg.

"What? Why are you looking at me? The hell would I know?"
Everyone shrugs.

"Then- I am blessed by fire, earth and protection, yes."
Both of them boggle at you again.

"Three?" "All hells- you're godsdamn serious-"

You're all blessedly interrupted when a noise like a single grating shriek blots out everything, each of you reacting in sync, shifting out of the way of... something. Eiryn catches the edge of it, spun around and slammed to the ground with a grunt as trees, dirt grass and everything else simply vanish- replaced by a huge divot driven across the ground.
>>
>>40096019
"Lyra, what the hell are you tracking?!"
"I don't know! That is not how the magic works, yes!"

It's a- a gryphon? Only not an eagle and a lion? It looks more like a hawk or something, absurdly upsized, shrieking and beating its wings in your direction.

Alternatively we could suplex yet another giant monster.

Have your friends and the other caravan guards distract it while we go ahead and prepare a web in the trees. Once it's done, we lead the gryphon into it.

You are, regardless of age, a professional.

That insinuates a certain level of competence, and that people can and will rely on you.
And you are not one to fail to live up to those expectations.

You ignore your heart thudding loudly in your ears, a growing counterpoint to the animal's shrieking-
You slice Nin's harness free with one hand, Sliding the moth to the ground, plucking Sheszka and Jin from their cubby-holes and placing them gently down.

Ezzy, somewhere underneath the absurdly tough skull encompassing your back, is probably even safer than they are.

You tap Georg on the shoulder as you start to move, and he glances at you for less than a second, keeping his eyes to the beast as Eiryn struglles back to their feet.
"Come up with a plan, yes."
"Wait, what-"

And you charge.

The hawk-gryphon screeches again as you run towards it, wings sweeping back, and you can feel an itching at the base of your skull as it gathers something-

It has, however, made the classic mistake of standing in front of you and on the ground.

The wings start to flap forward even as you make your own move, and you can feel an utterly unsubtle increase in wind pressure-

And then you punch it squarely in the beak, snapping its head to the side, the wind reduced to a pleasant breeze as what you can only assume is a ton or more of gryphon slams to the ground.

It's definitely part cat, though- It spins agilely over the ground, flipping to its feet, claws lashing out. You catch them with your buckler, meeting its swing with a solid block, moving around to keep it facing you- its eyes swivel towards the others, but with a jagged crack up the side of its beak, it is unwilling to look away.
>>
>>40097109
And that suits you just fine.

Georg's stones are thrown off course by the creatures power- the twisting wind around it keeping it momentarily safe from assault- Eiryn has regained their feet, and you've formed a triangle around the beast.

Between you all stands a crouching, wailing feline monstrosity, talons tearing at the ground, beak snapping, wings lashing about.

You bare your fangs.

You spin your spear, aiming its point for the beasts foot, solidifying the ground beneath it-
One strike and you'll keep it groundbound till the job is done.

If it hits.

Which, regretfully, it does not- the beast snatches its limb away, rearing back to free both from holding it up- and it slashes down at you, scoring your breastplate, curved talons hooking into your armour, dragging you sideways as you both try to free yourself- The idiot bird thing screaming in your face all the while.

You punch it again, but you can't get any strength behind it at this angle-

Slingstones skip past you, closer than you feel comfortable with, the wind pressure around the beast reflecting them at odd angles.

It's probably best for Nin to sit this one out- you'd rather not have the wind blow a face-full of powder your way.

Looking on the bright side, though- You definitely have the monster's full attention.
Your powers are all readying to your call, the shifting patterns of your limbs glowing white hot- No bird will make a fool of you!

The paladin has regained their feet, a single cry to their god igniting their blade, a crack of power and thunder accompanying the blow, the animal dragging you forward as it springs in response to the pain.

Wings begin beating heavily- preparation for magic or flight, you're not sure-

Guys. Here me out on this one. Lightning will shut down its muscles, which will ground it for long enough for fire to be effective. As is, right now, the waxy coating (not to mention probably magic) probably won't make a straight up barbeque very effective.
>>
>>40098388
>>>Feathers are flammable.
>>
>>40098486
You apply real world physics 1:1 on a fantasy monster, depending on how evol ed it is, lightning is more likely to just hurt it or cause a temporary spasm at worst.

You abandon your spear for the moment, bracing yourself against the stone, muscles screaming as you haul on the creatures foreleg-
It tumbles forwards, half atop you, rear legs scrambling for purchase, claws digging furrows all across the ground-

Your companions are finally making headway-

Georg's stone passes through the creature's magical wind, cracking off its skull and skipping away, turning its manic struggles into sluggish pawing-

Eiryn will not let up, weapon and armour alike painful to even look at, overflowing with holy power, cleaving away at everything in reach.

You finally disentangle yourself from its claws, hauling it further sideways, catching a face-full of battering wingbeats.
You snag the flailing limb, your hands blazing, the red of your chitin glowing with internal light.

And then the gryphon catches fire.

That might be, in retrospect, a weak description.

The gryphon acquires the instantaneous ability of self-immolation.

The pair of smoldering handprints you left in the feathers spark, blaze and spread- and in an instant, no piece of the creature is visible through the inferno, the beast pitching itself to the ground so hard that you're lifted from it by the tremors, your fellows all struggling to keep their feet.

It stands, slowly, painfully, blackened flesh and ruined wings, its front half scarred and damaged by your power- It screeches fury and pain, wings spreading, though only one responds.

One eye is clearly scarred by the flames, a white film across it, and the creature is half mad with pain-

You charge in with a vengeance, scooping your spear from the ground, closing on the creature as it tries to puff its now missing feathers, aiming for intimidation in the wake of your attacks.

It doesn't work.

Your aim is good, all the moreso for its inability to take to the air, and your spear pierces its neck, blood spraying wide from the wound, the screeching immediately taking on a wet, sickly note.

You dig in your non-existent heels, keeping a firm grip on your weapon as the thing struggles, the other adventurers already closing in-

The next slingstone is deadly accurate, crushing one of the beast's eyes, leaving oozing wreckage on its face-
It was the blinded eye, but really, it's the thought and effort that counts at this point.

Eiryn is a bit more lucky- which is to say that the paladin's blow cleaves a wing free, and you're immediately struck with the urge to have gryphon wings for dinner, ignoring the absurdity of, well, everything.

Another battering claw comes for you, a low sweep trying to escape your guard-
But you're all the more dangerous close to the ground, a chitin armoured leg, tearing the tendons from it's paw, drawing another gurgling screech.

The beast's sheer vitality is impressive- burned, stabbed, broken, and still on its feet and fighting.
It's remaining eye focusing on you, an angry noise burbling out through its ruined face-

You try to bring your magic to bear, stone crunching as it shifts upwards, pillars surrounding it, hands grasping at its weakening paws-
And it goes berserk, howling, raging, smashing stone with ease, one wing snapping as it bodily smashes its prison to pieces, a paw the size of your upper body slamming into you, a worrying crunch of metal giving way, pain and pressure on your chest-

You skid backwards, limbs scrabbling, trying to stay upright, struggling to keep your grip tight on your spear.

You wheeze for air, your chestplate putting an unbearable pressure on your ribs, so tight you can't breathe-

You haul it off, lungs gratefully sucking air, and you pick yourself up shakily, turning back to the fight.

Georg has fallen back a few steps, dodging flying stone, angry monsters and broken ground- he stays one step ahead of the beast's blows, but he has no opportunity to strike back, no chance to fight. And Eiryn-

Eiryn is above, leaping from a half-shattered pillar, hurtling through the air, sword burning with light, growing, expanding, the creature turning to face them at the last second, the blade coming down like an executioners axe, the gryphon's head flying free-

Blood fountains out, coating the erstwhile sling-man. The paladin somehow walks through a soray of gore, coming out the other side without a drop.
Honestly, ridiculous.

_______________________________________________________________

You pick up your dented chestpiece, Georg trying to clear his eyes of gryphon blood.
A short trip behind the bushes and you're loaded down with monsters- the friendly kind- once more.

Then the three of you are left standing around a corpse the size of a large wagon.
You look to the holy warrior.
>>
>>40101728
"So, ah. Good job, yes?"
"Mhm."
"How do we carry it back?"
"Maybe you can... drag it?"
"That might take a while to-"

The blood coated man sighs, one eye still held shut.
"Nah, this is pretty much what I'm here for."

You both look to him.
"What you're here for?"
"Yup."

He lifts the gryphon's massive paw with a odd mottled piece of cloth- and the corpse vanishes, the cloth bulging, seams straining.
It also immediately starts to leak blood.

Georg sighs.
