You channel vys, extracting the blood from your clothing and letting it gather in front of you. You end up with a ball about the size of your head which you toss into the grass with a thought before turning your attention back to Aylin. “He's all yours. Do what you want. I only just recast paralysis so he should be down for another hour or so.”

She glances up at you from the fire and nods, standing slowly and walking towards the tent with purpose. The knife is clutched in her hand, her knuckles white. She ducks into the tent, and you elect to take a seat by the fire to make sure everything goes as planned. No surprises. The sun is still a few hours from rising, and were it not for the fire it would be pitch black outside. You hear Aylin speaking in the tent, slowly and calmly.

Regulus, who'd been standing with the guar outside the circle of fire light, comes to stand next to you. His warbling voice echoes strangely in the still night air. “What is the purpose of murdering Markos?”

You jerk a thumb towards Markos' tent. There's a wet thud, followed by another, and a third. Something splatters against the tent flap and the cloth is stained a darker shade of brown. “He tried to rape Aylin, she's extracting her revenge at the moment.” You say by way of explanation.

Regulus just slowly nods his head. It takes him a veritable age to speak. “I see. I apologize. He hit the guar and they ran off into the grass. I have spent the night pursuing them. How far are we from this Anthus? When I last was awake, it was a small fishing village.”

You shrug. “Less than a day. If we set out at dawn we should reach the city by noon. Thank you, by the way. For retrieving the guar that is.” You stand, stretching. “Anyway, I think Aylin has it handled. I will retire to my tent. I was mediating earlier upon the nature of the soul and the experience left me horribly drained. By the way, you look fascinating in a deep trance.”

Regulus nods once more, but doesn't respond. You duck inside your tent and lay down on your sleeping mat, reviewing the events of the day so far. Quite the eventful birthday, if you do say so yourself. Far more eventful than you'd been anticipating, and the sun hasn't even risen yet. You were hoping to spend it calmly enrolling Aylin in the Academy and then taking a test, perhaps catching a ship back to El-Amin. How the fates do conspire.

You awake feeling refreshed, though you're not sure how much time has passed it seems your soul has finally restored itself fully. You push yourself up, stretching briefly before climbing out of your tent. You're forced to shield your eyes against the sun, wincing at the sudden brightness. It's probably a few hours before noon, by your guess. You can see dark clouds gathering on the horizon, a storm blowing in.

You wander over to the burnt out campfire, taking a seat by the ash-strewn pit. Aylin is nowhere to be seen, she's probably still asleep in her tent. Markos' tent is caked in dry blood and is starting to really smell awful as it bakes in the sun. You should probably see about burning it, or something.

Regulus stands by the guar, still holding onto them. You doubt he's moved much at all since you went back to sleep. You don't feel like starting a new fire, so you just take some jerky from your cloak and gnaw on it while considering what course of action to take.

You sit there enjoying your shoe leather-esque jerky for a while. You don't even really know what animal it's made from. Regardless once you've managed to gnaw through it you stand and wander over to Markos tent, pulling back the tent flap and peeking inside.

Blood seems to coat every surface, flies buzzing around the man's mutilated corpse. She seems to have carved his face to pieces, his cheeks are missing entirely and some sort of lizard creature seems to be rooting through one of his empty eye sockets. He's been disemboweled, and a putrid stench rises from his spilled guts. It's really quite the gruesome sight, though you've seen worse. A knife is sticking out of one of his eyes, Aylin's knife presumably, so you pull it out with a wet squelch.

Drawing the blood off the knife with a touch of water magic you tuck it into your cloak and withdraw from the tent. Whilst walking calmly towards Aylin's tent you focus, and release a burst of vys. Almost instantly Markos' tent is set alight, the fire starting at the base but quickly spreading across the canvas. The supports collapse, bringing the burning cloth down on Markos' corpse. The smell of burning flesh slowly fills the clearing as you duck your head inside Aylin's tent.

Aylin is sleeping soundly, caked in blood. She's probably exhausted after yesterday's events, but there's no rest for the wicked. You crouch down and grab her shoulder, shaking her gently awake. One of her hands shoots up to grab your wrist, her other grasping for her dagger, finding her sheath empty. She calms, once she realizes it's you, slowly blinking the sleep from her eyes.

Sitting up, she frowns. “Oh, it's just you. I thought... well, it's nothing.” She glances down at her clothes, pulling them away from her body and wrinkling her nose in disgust. “I don't suppose there is any way for me to bathe? I don't want to wander into this Academy caked in gore.”

You stand, or crouch rather. “Sure, I can get the blood out with a little simple water magic. Come on.” You gesture for her to follow you as you duck out of the tent, and a few moments later she does so. Her dress is torn, but that can be explained away as one of the hazards of travel. Channeling your magic and weaving your hands through the air in front of you, you will the water in the air around you to condense and flow through her clothing. It takes some time, but eventually you've got her clothes and her, for the most part at least, clean.

She nods her head in thanks before eyeing Markos burning tent, his funeral pyre really. You reach into your cloak and extract her dagger, flipping it in the air and catching it by the flat of the blade, thanks to a little bit of Metal magic. You offer the handle to her and she accepts, tucking the blade into her sheath. You snag another strip of jerky as well, since the smell of cooking meat is making you terribly hungry.

Glancing between Regulus and Aylin, you speak. “Let's set off. I'd bet we can reach Anthus within the next few hours if we hurry.” That said, you turn on your heels and march towards the guar. The three of you are mounted and back on the road in a matter of minutes, Aylin once more seated behind you with her arms wrapped around your abdomen. You're finally able to let your mind wander to more lighthearted topics.

Aylin has her head rested against your shoulders, you think she might be catching up on some sleep but her arms are tight around your waist so maybe she's awake. You should probably broach the topic of Markos. “How are you feeling, Aylin? I apologize for not being able to stop Markos sooner, but I had been so exhausted after my meditation I fell unconscious shortly after.”

Aylin squeezes you a little tighter. “It's fine, I don't blame you for what happened. Markos was a weak man, a twisted man, and I exacted my vengeance upon him tenfold. I am satisfied with that.”

You wave a hand dismissively. “That's all well and good but you did try to stab me this morning. Are you sure that you're feeling okay?”

You feel her nod her head, though she waits a few moments before speaking. “It was terrifying, to be so powerless. I do not like relying on others for help. I don't like being weak.”

You shrug, digging your heels into the flanks of your guar as it starts to lag. “Everyone has to rely on someone else eventually. No sense being reluctant to do so. I can't tell you how many times my friends would've died without me, or I without them. My advice is that you collect a good group of friends and watch each other's backs, through thick and thin and all that nonsense. Anyway, if you enroll in the Academy you'll soon learn to counter spells like Paralysis, you'll need not worry about being powerless like that again.”

She falls silent, and after a few more minutes of riding you turn your attention to Regulus. “Did you see the array they were excavating in Khmedi? It's an old Rhynian relic inside an abandoned bunker. I was hoping to get your opinion on it, actually.”

Regulus speaks after his usual long delay. “I did, I rode over to inspect it while you were conversing with the human Vatis. It is supremely well done, as are all things constructed by the Rhynians. I believe it was a communication array intended to communicate with our allies. I am not privy to much information about them. I recall that they once landed in Rhynia and marched through the streets, a grand parade in honor of the centenary anniversary of the alliance. They dwell among the stars, though in a technical sense we do as well.”

Regulus turns his head to face you, the seconds ticking by as he stares at you. “It had been activated recently. The crystal set in the alignment array was dead, despite the array being powered. I could not tell you what message was sent, but I imagine if our allies have not collapsed as our own Empire has they will have received the message. Perhaps after so long without contact they deactivated their receptors. No one can truly know.”

You ride in silence for a while longer before posing another question to Regulus. “I actually have a question about your construction. Your soul is that of a living person, surrounded by the soul of another. Obviously your soul is housed in some sort of enchanted shell. My question is, how did your creator get a true soul? Did she take it from someone else and implant it inside of you, somehow? Did she create an artificial soul?”

For a second you think Regulus simply isn't going to answer. The pause is inordinately long, even for Regulus. “She took my soul from a prisoner housed in Longia. She stripped it of its memories and implanted it in a device of her creation, which allows me to have a higher degree of autonomy than most constructs. For all intents and purposes, I am a human. Simply a human in a metal body. Ironically my capacity for independent thought, my creator's greatest work, is the very reason I was not acceptable for use in the Rhynian military.”

So there is a way to transfer souls, and apparently a way to contain them artificially. Interesting. You wish you could take Regulus apart and examine all of his individual components but somehow you get the feeling he'd object to that. However, for now your curiosity is sated. You reach into your cloak and extract a book, folding it open on the neck of your guar and starting to read.

You start off reading the Excidium, and make good progress for a time. It's just recounting the main character's, or perhaps the writer's, experiences in the strange Rhynian facility in the 'Exotic Provinces'. He discusses all manner of experiments he saw, strange magics that he was being taught, and experiences he had. Apparently they were trying to engineer a creature which could survive in the harsh environment outside the colony.

You work through a good four chapters of the book before tucking it back into your cloak, resolving to finish it another day. Then you pull out the Varistha's notes and start to leaf through them. You've more or less finished off most of his notes on magic theory, so you start on his notes related to philosophy. They're the largest stack by far. You start with the oldest writings, since these seem to follow a stricter progression than most of his other rambling notes.

The pages are old and yellowed, and the writing hard to follow, but the first ten or so pages seem to relate mostly to the relationship between Pani and Surya. There are also a few references to their relationship with Dhatu and Prthvi, but no mention of a banished goddess in the early writings. He claims that Pani is the Empress of the Gods, crowned by the lotus, and that as such her dominion over Surya is absolute, as is her dominion over the other gods.
