Hello and welcome to Lost In Time Quest! You are John Erin Perry, commonly called Jeppers (to your chagrin), and you’re the President of the Civil Engineers Association of Roanoke and surrounding districts. Of course, those surrounding districts seem to have taken a holiday, or maybe Roanoke has, and you find yourself, along with the rest of your small town, in another land and time. But now, you're busy defending the Dorven city of Hashan from human invaders.

The ships at the docks continue to approach, and in the ten minutes it takes for them to get close enough that you could see their faces if you were down on the docks, another fourty of those ships die, the last round sending a ship up in flames, declaring the last of their ammunition. They begin shuffling it back inside, to wait for more ammunition. With that, the gatling guns begin to spin up.

Up on the surface, your recieve word that the dorves have managed to kill another three hundred humans, but at the cost of 200 dorven berserker lives. They’re a kilometre away from the wall, now, where the seventy five dorven fireteams wait for them, along with the gatling guns.

>Docks: Fourty enemy ships killed, no loss of life.

>Everyone’s alive.
>Fifty ships left.

>Surface: Three hundred more humans dead, two hundred berserkers down.

>150 Berserkers left
>1525 humans left.

You send the runner back up to the surface, who manages to get the message to the berserkers before they charge again. At the note, they all start retreating, putting their strength to run away as fast as they can. The humans, thinking that the dorves are in retreat, start chasing, only to find themselves confronted by a foe both greater and smaller than them: the .223 round.

The seventy-five Dorven fireteams all unless one .223 round every five seconds, with a whipcrack of the round firing, an onomatopoeic *rachet* as the breech opens and the empty cartridge springs out, a thud and click as a new round is loaded and the breech is closed, and then it starts all over again. That, happening seven hundred and fifty times along the length of the wall.

And it’s not even over. The gatling guns themselves begin to spin up, and there’s a constant whirr as they pour lead onto the battlefield, chewing up the faces of the human horde.

The horde slows. And attempts to keep going. But falters, and grinds to a halt, finding cover behind whatever they can. All that, in the space of a minute.

>Twenty five berserker casualties, five hundred human casualties

>125 berserkers left, 1025 humans left.

Down on the docks, things are going just as well, as the gatling guns on the docks start dealing out their own damage upon the human intruders. Ships don’t sink as fast as they do with the howitzer, but whatever crew is alive upon a boat get annihilated by the rain of bullets.

>No casualties, 30 ships out of commission.

>20 ships left

And then, when all hope is lost, you grind it in a little more. You quickly grab some paper, and finding your phone in your pocket (a Google Puzzle 4, with a solar-powered adapter) you, with the help of some dorves, manage to amplify the speaker.

And it begins to play...

>Drive them out, one final time
>Parlay, see if they’ll surrender.
>Write In.
>>
>>39996281
...shit,
>Drive them out, one final time

My stance on parlay is we pretty much have just shown then how fucked they will be if they continue. Do they really want to waste more lives? I mean, if they do than so be it. It be the fate they chose. It be an act of mercy from us, so we can say "Hey, we have them a chance." Later if asked
>>
>>39996597
My stance, is that they started this fight, and attacked innocent civilians, they're no better than raiding barbarians who have decided that they don't like beards. We have arrived on this battlefield with the power to put an end to the deaths of children and babies, and ensure that these monsters never have a chance to threaten them again.

Basic law rule: Audietur et altera pars.
We don't know who is in the right here. I guess it's the dwarves, but it also could be that they took the human's land (remember, the town is only 60 years old).
>>
>>39996651
Throwing all them together under the same tag of children slaying barbarians seems harsh. What do we know of these United clans? That they only recently finished their own war against each other?

We know not of each clan individually. Some of them I'm sure don't condone child slaying. Nor did all of them want to jump right back into another war. Especially the losers of said war. Even if the parlay didn't stop the battle, it could have convinced a portion of them to abandon it, leaving the blood thirsty idiots behind to die.

Take it as you will.
>>
>>39997002
well argued. we shall have to see how our choice goes.
>>
>>39996281

The docks themselves have no blood on them. The boats didn’t even get close to them. There are a few human survivors, who are pulled up and sat down, with a few dorves and Rohvakins watching over them. For the most part, they are much more scared of the Rohvakins.

Up on the surface, however, it’s going far differently. Having been able to plan something out while hiding from the weapons, they are now sending arrows over their own defenses into the wall, killing some dorves in the process. Not many, but enough for the humans to realize that this wasn’t an unbreakable wall.

>100 humans died, 3 Dorven Fireteams down.

>72 Fireteams left
>925 humans left.

At this point, one human, behind a very large shield, walks out into the open, shouting, “Challenge me, Dohvakin! Fight me for the rights to this land!”

>Kill him from afar
>Respond to the challenge (Menacing)

“Come on them, Rohvakin, show your-“the human is caught off midword as you emerge from the wall. And emerge you do.

From the top of the wall you jump down, landing into the soft earth, making it crater underneath you. The gears and pistons on the suit hiss and click as you stand up straight, all feeding off a central core of a magical core. So sure, that’s got some magic, but apart from that it’s important Roanoke technology.

And you look fucking magnificent. You’re covered in something similar to plate mail, except each plate is connected again to the exoskeleton that keeps things moving and lightweight (along with a few more unnoticeable spells). And on top of all of that, you have the mask itself, a glorious piece of metalwork that adheres perfectly to your face, the eye slits being covered in a dark transparent glasslike gem, and the mouth of the mask thinly perforated, so you can speak.

Slowly, you make your way over to the human. Not because you are slow, mind. This is intimidation. And eventually, you are right in front of him, at least a foot taller than him. He stares up in awe.

>I am Rohvakin. How may I help you?

>>40002152
I can see magic being less effective if it gives 'free' ammo, as otherwise there isn't much reason to use the normal stuff. in fact, things like gunpowder, anything made with oil (including plastics), heavy metals and other stuff is going to be in short supply soon at the rate we've been building.

Some guy basically took 8-bit theater, got a bunch of people together, and gave the strips voice-acting, once you get past the first episode or two, the audio quality gets really good, it's actually a great series, you should watch it, the voices are all really spot on to how I though the characters should sound.

Railroads are pretty simple, just some wooden rails laid out on a level grade. It's only when you have heavy industry that it becomes necessary/possible to churn out steel rails.

”Greetings. I am Rohvakin. How may I help thee?” you decide to go for the thee. Why not? You’ve got nothing to lose, and absolutely everything to gain.

“I...I am Dralich Hofnar. I am the leader of the United Clans of Cliffcoast.”

“Greetings, Dralich Hofnar. A pleasure to meet you. What do you request of us?”

Dralich gulps, and stands up a bit straighter. “We are here to claim our own land, the land of Cliffcoast.”

You nod. “Fair enough. And you believe you can get it from us?”

Dralich stiffens at this. “What, you think you could possibly keep it from us? Let me tell you something. My father would run down deer for dinner. Days and days of running, till the deer falls to the ground and just watches my dad come over to start eating. I’ve done it myself. Because I’m human. I don’t know who or what you Rohvakin are, but we’re humans, and humans are the most kickass species in the world. Yes, the clans fought. But when a threat greater than ourselves faces us, then we unite and work together. I have no doubts that we’d keep fighting if we had an entire planet to ourselves, but I know for a fact we’d work together if any great magical beings descended from another plane to attack us. That’s what humanity is about.”

“Well-“

You cut him off. “I propose a solution. So that the United Clans, the Dorves, and Rohvakin can live toegether in peace. You will get your half of the coast. The dorves get their half. And the Rohvakin get their island in the centre.”

Dralich hesitates, before slowly, slowly backing off, shaking his head. “I...I’m sorry. I can’t do that. You’re right, you have killed my men. You’re good at that. And I know you’re strong. But I can’t just start working with the man who killed my own men. I will stop fighting you. But I can’t work with you. Not now. I don’t know when ever. My apologies, but that’s the best I can do.”

You nod, gears grinding. “That is fair. My apologies, Dralich. I hope you find success in your future endeavours. And for now,” you gesture towards his army, “I suggest you leave, before the dorves sic themselves on you.”

Dralich quickly hurries off his own soldiers, picking up the bodies of the fallen as they go, and are soon on their way, far from Hashan, to wherever they’ve settled. And for now, you decide it’s time to stop fighting and get back to work.

After several days of working in Hashan to restore it to its former pre-war beauty, you managed to leave back for home, to Roanoke, with the rest of the humans. And so, you find yourself back at home, with jobs to be done and chores to be taken care of. And, in fact, some immigrants to process.

>Congratulations! You now have 4AP per turn/week! Each action point can go towards one major action. Smaller actions can be taken on with some persuasion, and more powerful NPCs can initiate major actions themselves, given time.

---

First things first, you bring in Mary, who starts to run you down over everything that’s happened the past few weeks, and what’s happening now.

“So, since the war has ended, we’ve managed to get back on track here at Roanoke with your leadership. We’ve cleared up most of the city now, and the agricultural projects are going pretty damn well with Farmer Mitch in charge. I’d say that we could actually focus on making the farms bigger, since we still have some of our own foods we can’t find in the local area, but that’s just one option.”

“Another option is what to do with the new immigrants we have. We already have 200 dorves here, who managed to come back on the boats with us. We also need to figure out what to do about them.”

>Let them stay
>Invite more (lax processing)
>Invite more (Strict/Arstotzka level processing)
>Kick them out.

“After that, I do think we need to work on communications with the government of Hashan. Surely the CEA has some radio equipment lying around. After that, we also need to focus inwards. People are getting a bit tired of the whole socialism thing. Is it time to start making money and setting taxes?”

“Anyway, can’t think of much else apart from that.”

Let's have an unofficial open borders policy going on. The more people come and go, the better an idea we'll have about this world.

Yeah man, I finished the first and am currently working on Ring of Fire. Are you alt-hist anon, perchance? If not, I highly, highly recommend Island In A Sea of Time. Even more grisly and dar than 1632, and I'd say more realistic, too. Takes place in 1000BC, for that extra flair.
>>
>>40005040
>Let them stay
Well, I suppose we could start setting up jobs depending on what we need to be done?
Sort of like industrial boom and factories, but less starving people being exploited and more work where you want according to want and knowledge?
We also need to start up schooling and education, I'm not sure what our policy on that is.

The Ring of Fire series, starting with 1632, is an alternate history series that takes an american coal-mining town and throws it into Germany, 1632, right in the middle of the Thirty Years War. Excellent book on modern tech and history interacting, and what one small action can change.

People are getting a bit tired of the whole socialism thing. Is it time to start making money and setting taxes?”

“Anyway, can’t think of much else apart from that.”

Back with the CEA, much more fun and absolutely batshit insane things are happening. The first sight to greet you upon entering the playground is an entire floor full of lathes in various states of completion, but with well over twenty all working away...on more lathes.

You find Joan standing over it all, watching it with approval. You approach, and she turns to greet you.

“Hey, Jep. Nice to see you back. Now that you’re here, we’ve got a few things to discuss. Firstly, we need to figure out what we’re going to do with all these lathes. I figured an imperial fucktonne of howitzers mounted on the walls, but you may want to go for something else. Either way, the lathes are yours to use.”

She keeps on handing you clipboards. “Next on the CEA agenda is figuring out what piece of infrastructure we need to improve. We figure that we could start looking into the Railroad bridge and see if it’s possible to connect it to Hashan or the mainland, but we could also (pardon me for this) repair the ferry dock and extend it outwards, further than it is. With the walls up and surrounding Roanoke, we need more room for expansion apart from the forest reserve, and I figure building polders or some sea-platforms may be a good idea.”

“Finally, we need to work on our army’s own personal arms and armor. The mechanical power-armor really works for the Rohvakin image, so we can push that, or just start pumping out more repeaters.”

The Dorven population seems to be in remarkably good shape, for having joined your community just a few days ago. Already they’ve started to set up in the nature reserve, building homes very similar to hobbit holes, except more like apartments than single houses.

It appears they’ve already chosen a community leader, who calls himself Egolev, who’s now standing in front of you in your office. And he has some questions.

“We are Dorves. We are proud industrymen. We would appreciate if you could put us to work in your society, so we may all benefit. From my point of view, if you wish to make some money off of our brothers in Hashan, you may be able to do so by making more of that special paper of yours, or you can get us to work on any one of the other projects you have ready. We will continue to build in our own time, so that more may join this lovely city if you so wish it.

Richard is enjoying himself. Firstly, he’s now allowed to use his guns as much as he wants. Second, he’s praised for having so many guns. Third, more people are trying to give him more guns.

He sights down the newest repeater model that the CEA has built, a larger affair with a sixteen-capacity round, before putting a few rounds through a target downrange. “Not bad,” he admits, rolling in the target. “I like it.”

He turns to you. “Now, apart from that, I’ve got some things to do myself, so I’ll keep it brief. We need to train everyone in Roanoke how to use a gun. We have powder for a while, but I’d like to make more, and I’d especially like Dorven help on that, see if they’ve got something fancy up their sleeve for that. Also, I’d like a few lathes so I can start building some specialty weapons, if you would allow me.”

>Give Richard lathes
>Don’t give Richard lathes.

“And past that, I’d like to also get some combat explosives made. For sieges or whatever. The C4 I smuggled out from Afghan is getting pretty old.”
>>
>>40005700
>Give Richard lathes
weeee have more than enough.
I love how all things can be made using lathes.
>>
>>40005533
You think it is a joke. I assure you, it is not. I grew up around cows. Here's what's going to happen.

You'll see the lathes in a field. That makes sense, lathes belong in a field. Then you'll see the lathes in several fields. Nothing strange about that, there are many lathes, they require many fields. Then you'll start seeing lathes on the road. Well, logically they have to get from one field to another, and roads are the best way to do that. Soon you'll see lathes closer to town. Maybe some of them wandered off on the way to another field? Then you'll start seeing them in town. You'll go to the store for a gallon of milk and see a lathe. You'll wait at the crosswalk for a lathe. The school homecoming will be cancled, because of lathes. And one day, maybe a month, maybe a year, you'll come downstairs in the morning for a cup of coffee, and right there, in your kitchen, will be a lathe. And then you'll know.

This is the lathes' town now.

You're just living in it.

The first step you take in bringing Roanoke back to the real world is figuring out your communication and travel situation, which both go hand in hand. So you call a council with the Dorven workforce and the CEA to figure it out.

Soon enough, you figure that while you may not be able to source lower-precision parts like rails at such quantities that you need them from your own forges, Hashan can more than adequately provide for your needs. So you send back a dorven team to buy as many rails as they can. You also send them with a few Novhvak’s, who carry with them a special kit and set of plans. All in good time, they say to the dorves wondering about the contents.

Back on the bridge itself, the CEA is figuring out exactly what you’ll need to build the rest of the bridge. And that’s when you learn about the literal magic of magical supports. Those bridges you see that just hold themselves in the air without suspension? Magic. All magic. Which you have plenty of. Soon enough the bridge is extending well out into the water, curving around to face Hashan in a direct route.

>The Railroad is about one quarter of the way done!

Of course, you then hear back from Hashan itself: the rails can be delivered. But you hear this through the lovely crackling of a radio. The CEA had more than a few hobbyists who bought Ham and CB radio kits, and you sent a few of the CEA along with it. And now, you’ve got a direct line of contact home.

The farms are the final item on the agenda. You extend these further out into the forest, and now the fields extent quite a bit, close enough to the dorven homes that a few choose to work at the farms for the short ‘commute’.

Yeah, Roanoke is doing well for itself.

>lower-precision
Hey, the first time you've used that correctly!
Thanks for running.

I haven't used it at all, though.

several times while talking about lathe upgrades you've said something about them becoming 'lower-tolerance' or lower-precision' instead of 'higher'. It's not like it's a big deal or anything, it just tweaked my nose.

Oh shit, did I? My apologies, I was under the impression that a low tolerance was a more precise piece and high tolerance allowed more wiggle room.

Different anon here
Yes it does you've been using it right.

From Cobane Engineering
TOLERANCE :Tolerance is the allowable variation for any given size in order to achieve a proper function. Tolerance equals the difference between lower and upper limit dimensions. Example; for 0.500-0.506 inch the tolerance would be 0.006 inch.

Right, but when he mentioned the laythe upgrades, he said they had 'lower tolerances'. tolerance is part of a design. Precision is how you'd measure a tool's ability to work within tolerances. (The laythe is precise to 0.0001". The part needs to be milled to .501" +/- 0.0025") Anyways like I said, we know what you mean so it doesn't really matter anyway.

Lurker/archive reader here (due to time zone). It's funny that among this little group of people there are three who know 1632. It's one of my favourite series. I read about a dozen books of the series and I have another handful unread laying around. What I like about 1632 is that every technical aspect of the story is sourced realistically, the only suspension of disbelief necessary is that everybody is friendly and helpful.
But the carefree fantastical atmosphere with magic of this quest is great, too. Keep going, artemis.
